BUSINESS REPORT “Now more than ever, we’re connecting Meadowlands businesses with the critical news and resources they need to stay ahead.”
Onward is defined as toward a point ahead. Forward, as in space or time. Ahead. Onward. Over the last several months, members of the MC have seen me consistently close my notes with this word because I believe in the future. I believe we all must look forward. Our past should shape us – but our future should define us. Let’s look through the windshield as opposed to the rear-view mirror. There is work to be done! So, allow me to define what ‘onward’ means for the Meadowlands Chamber (MC) and our affiliate entities the Meadowlands Live! | Convention & Visitors Bureau (MLCVB), Meadowlands Media (MM) and the Meadowlands Regional 2040 Foundation Inc. as internal organizations with mission-critical programs and initiatives.

is part of a business coalition of over 100 entities that are advocating for the reopening of our economy in a responsible but safe manner. We admire and applaud the Governor’s direct involvement in managing this very difficult pandemic. And we believe there are ways to expedite the reopening of all business as regional metrics allow. The fact is, businesses can and will follow all necessary protocols to keep their customers and employees as safe as possible. Our strong advocacy will never stop, even when we get our economy humming again. Onward….
You know by now that the MC has been at the forefront of leading business recovery in the region. Our first job was to empower our members with the necessary information to apply for stimulus programs and support grants. We continue to post updated resources on our website.
The MC’s pivot In my past notes, I shared that the MC was also adjusting to sustain our business. just like many of you. We have reduced operating expenses where possible and have reorganized our management team in a strategic manner so we can maintain our mission and provide our membership with the benefits you have come to expect. We will look different but, in many ways, we will be more focused on what is important to you.
I have represented the MC membership on one of Governor Murphy’s Restart & Recovery Committees and the MC

Meadowlands 2040 Foundation: Advancing Economic Development The mission of the Meadowlands 2040 Foundation is to educate and establish community awareness on the issues that will sustain a strong regional economy through the year 2040. Led by Chair Fletch Creamer Jr, along with Vice Chair Bill Hanson and a dedicated group of Trustees, the 2040 Foundation continues to present valuable programs, conferences and digital content that showcas the Meadowlands as a great place to live, work, play and invest in. The annual Economic Development & Relocation Guide is in production as I write this note and the annual Thought Leaders Conference will be held in October Onward!
Onward‌ MLCVB: Marketing Our Destination Assets Despite the devastation on the hospitality sector due to COVID-19 and the turmoil experienced by the American Dream project, we are confident the facility will soon fully open and the project will eventually make the Meadowlands a primary destination for millions of visitors each year.
In closing, I hope you can sense my determination and optimism for our future despite how hard it may seem right now. In the past, the MC has had many tag lines in our branding but none more important than: Onward! We will go forward together!
We have been a supporter of the American Dream project for over 15 years and we still believe in what it can do for the regional economy, especially Main Street businesses in the surrounding communities. Our long-term visioning process knows the economic impacts of filling hotel rooms with new visitors and how those visitors venture into the local neighborhoods to play, dine, shop and experience the local flair that makes us special. We will continue to advance the need for a convention center at the Meadowlands Sports Complex and for the communities and region to come together to market our destination assets collectively.
Respectfully and with great purpose,
Jim Kirkos President & CEO Meadowlands Chamber

BUSINESS WISE
Strategic Transformation & Recovery in 2020 Tips to optimize your business operations and culture amid COVID-19
T
he new decade hit hard and unexpectedly with the global COVID-19 pandemic. This unprecedented event is unlike any seen in our lifetime. Our personal and professional lives have been deeply impacted. Business owners and small, midsize and large corporations are bracing themselves for the recovery phase and aftermath of COVID-19. One thing everyone is agreeing on is that business will not be conducted the same. The global economy is evolving and transforming, with some organizations better prepared than others to embrace the sudden changes in everyday life and work styles. As businesses begin reopening, business owners and leadership will need preparation to assimilate back into the workplace. This will mean considering changes in business models and interactions, both internally and externally. The world is shaken and we are experiencing a monumental shift in business. Strategic transformation is not just the wise choice. It is the only choice. Gear and ramp up Operationally, businesses will need to hit the ground running, especially as physical locations open. Municipalities and townships are slowly opening with ordinances in place for safety measures. With new and limited staff, business leaders will have to internally re-design business operations to serve customer demand. Additionally, they will have to comply with industry-specific personal protective equipment (PPE masks, gloves, etc.), hours of operation and industry-specific guidelines. We are in a time of gray. Government guidelines are not always clear or defined, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. One piece of advice I give clients is to cover all your bases. If your business location is in an office building, find out the policies and procedures within that building so your office and employees adhere to those guidelines while in communal spaces in the building.
Furthermore, you should have standard operating procedures (SOPs) for your employees that are clearly communicated so there is standardization and communicated expectancy as to what is required by everyone. This could include rotational work schedules, responsiveness and personal protective equipment. Be sure to check with external entities to ensure your business or organization is in compliance with current requirements to protect your organization, employees and the local communities at large. Protect your business from liabilities. Become resourceful with strategy Another suggestion I give clients is to hope for the best and plan for the worst. It is best to be strategic in your approach with business. Some businesses were prepared for COVID-19 as far as virtual IT capabilities, workforce communication, emergency backup and business continuity planning. But many had to jump into survival mode and lost time, money and talented people in the process. COVID-19 is a lesson to be more prepared for the unexpected. Now is a time that many have no choice but to pivot their business models and redesign how they do
business. Think strategically. I am working with clients now that are strategically planning six months out through the beginning of 2021, anticipating more changes to come (eg. flu season, COVID-19 still lingering, human resource restructuring, PPE bulk ordering, business model redesign, etc.) in order to better manage and utilize their resources in time, money and human capital. Meta Viable Solutions is also working to supply state, government, not-for-profits and businesses of all sizes with affordable, quality PPE. Manage culture shock All industries and different size organizations have experienced some sort of culture shock amid COVID-19. Many businesses are facing a rapidly changing new reality that is challenging conventional operations and cultural norms. They realize they won’t be viable in the new reality that is to come. Being a few steps ahead in recognizing changes in your industry, organization, workforce demand, product and services will be the key to future sustainability. For instance, many organizations are recognizing the uncertainty and impacts associated with a managing a workforce that is now suddenly operating remotely. Here are some considerations: meadowlandsmedia.com
September 2020

• How will you deal with recent layoffs and manage hiring new talent? • What will your upcoming workforce look like to serve your customers? • Will you manage a virtual, in-office or combination of both workforce? • How will you design and cultivate effective communications and team dynamics with positive morale? Strong intact team dynamics and culture transformation will be vital to: • Remain competitive • Improve effectiveness • Enhance performance Notably, Meta Viable Solutions has also pivoted its business model to better serve client needs during this time. Through oneon-one leadership coaching, personalized training and workshops, we are working with clients who are experiencing cultural changes in the new business environment. This pandemic has taught us now more than ever that we all have a social responsibility to stay conscious of what is happening around us. Nothing happens in solitude. We all are reliant on one another to take the proper precautions and help one another in order to flourish as a collaborative society. Let’s do so responsibly. INVESTMENT & WEALTH MANAGEMENT
New Investment Opportunities
New doors open for New Jersey residents looking for high-growth, high-return investments
F
or New Jersey residents looking for investment opportunities, intrastate equity crowdfunding opens up a new world of investment prospects, according to Christopher Frey, founder and president of the state’s first and only authorized and registered equity crowdfunding portal Crowd Funding NJ Inc. “Angel investors, VC’s and other wealthy 1 percenters have been investing like this for a long time. Now, the 99% of Americans who had previously been excluded from these types of high-growth, high-return investments can participate, investing in the small and midsized businesses that are the growth engine of our economy. An equity crowdfunding investment can be an important part of a well-balanced investment portfolio.” With equity crowdfunding, small, individual investors can fill the “Funding Gap” left by traditional funding sources. Investors can review each company’s disclosure information and the specific opportunity on the crowdfunding portal and then choose the company or companies in which they want to invest. Their reward is that they get
to participate in the growth of the company. The company receives a long-term investment of needed growth capital without the requirements and processes of a bank loan; or without having to give up a significant stake in the company and a management role that private equity sources require. Frey said the Crowd Funding NJ Inc. business model recognizes the significant demands on company owners, including their time. “Every successful entrepreneur and business owner I’ve met has been hyper-focused on growing sales and running the day-to-day operations of their business,” he said. “They simply don’t have the time or internal resources to effectively raise capital. That’s why we offer a complete turn-key solution. We handle everything from disclosure package preparation to investor documents to managing the crowdfunding campaign and our costs are comparable to that of obtaining a bank loan.” While intrastate equity crowdfunding is available in several states across the country, New Jersey offers a unique opportunity, according to Frey. “From high-tech
start-ups, to pharmaceutical and biotech entrepreneurs, to established second- and third-generation family businesses, the potential for crowdfunding investments and investment opportunities is great.” To learn more about these emerging investment opportunities, visit CrowdFundingNJ.com or email info@crowdfundingnj.com. Crowd Funding NJ, Inc. (CFNJ) is the first authorized and registered New Jersey Crowd Funding Internet Site Operator (ISO) – commonly referred to as a Portal. We have developed a state-of-the-art Equity Crowd Funding platform that is compliant with New Jersey Crowd Funding Laws and Regulations. Through the Portal we provide a secure fully integrated marketplace for New Jersey Intra-State Equity Crowd Funding transactions. Registered Issuers (New Jersey companies seeking capital) provide fully compliant Disclosure Packages for Registered Investors (New Jersey residents seeking investments) to review. Investors may then make direct investments in Issuers through the Portal.

Completing Your Cyber Defense Cybersecurity end-user awareness training
I
’m sitting at my desk checking email and notice I’ve received a message from my favorite coffee shop: “We appreciate you being a loyal customer. To say thank you, click the link below for a $10 gift certificate.” As I eagerly prepare to redeem my reward, I hear that voice in my head saying, “BEWARE!” The scenario above is played out thousands of times every single day and is referred to as a phishing attack. The attacker is using this scheme to get you to click so that malware or other devious software can be downloaded to your computer. Afterward, all chaos could break out, or the attacker could stay silent and collect valuable data that you would never knowingly provide, such as credit card or bank account login information. In another phishing example, you receive an email from an executive in your company: “Hey Bob, I need the attached invoice paid immediately. I’m currently on the road, so please take care of this. The company will reimburse you.” Bob, being a good soldier, puts the “invoice payment” on his credit card only to see his manager walk by ten minutes later. There are numerous other schemes hackers use to get the unjust reward they seek, the majority of which can be handled via a strong cyber defense. If your organization has an IT department with knowledgeable resources, or if your organization contracts with a managed service provider, the reasonable assumption is that they are taking the necessary steps to keep the intruders out. However, caveat emptor, let the buyer beware. My strong recom-
mendation is to have a trusted cybersecurity professional evaluate your internal or external service provider offering so that any gaps or inadequacies can be identified and remedied. However, a strong cyber defensive posture alone is not enough. Most industry experts agree that a large percentage of cyberattacks start with human error inside the organization. Said in simpler terms, we may have a strong defense but we tend to invite the intruders in. Clicking on links we shouldn’t click on, responding to unusual or inappropriate requests, maintaining weak passwords, unknowingly releasing company confidential information, inadequate wireless access control, inappropriate web browsing and numerous other mishaps become a huge welcome sign to the unlocked doors that intruders are looking for. We often make their jobs easier without even knowing it. What’s the solution for such an ongoing dilemma? Cybersecurity end-user awareness training. Training topics and approach Cybersecurity end-user awareness training focuses on the “end-user” of your organization’s IT Services. This excludes the typical IT professional, with the assumption that the IT resources are well aware of cybersecurity best practices. End-user awareness training focuses on those IT service users that may not be cyber aware and need an ongoing reminder of good cybersecurity hygiene. meadowlandsmedia.com

can be made based on identified vulnerable areas. Programs like this are typically presented on a learning management system (LMS) platform. The LMS includes several 15-20 minute sessions which cover a much broader selection of topics than could be covered in a single 4-8 hour session. This approach allows you to set up schedules for training, perhaps one 20-minute topic per week or a couple a month, providing ongoing reinforcement of good cybersecurity hygiene. A cybersecurity training program that allows you to cover a large range of topics, measure progress, simulate a wide range of attacks, measure human response and customize and adjust as needed by the organization tends to have the biggest payback. As always, if you have interest and/or need assistance with establishing such a program, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m always happy to participate.
............................
There are a number of approaches to providing cybersecurity end-user awareness training to your organization, but I’d like to focus on two, each of which involves bringing in a subject matter expert and certified instructor to assist in the planning and delivery of such training. The first approach is instructor lead training (ILT) where an instructor comes to your facility and delivers a half-day or fullday session. This could also be delivered as a virtual instructor lead training (VILT) online session. The value of VILT is that it is a dedicated session with everyone together (or multiple sessions for larger organizations.) The course can be customized to your organization’s specific needs and these sessions typically generate a lot of discussion among the group participants. Disadvantages include business interruptions, participants getting pulled out and the amount of material covered in a short amount of time can be difficult to absorb. Although attendees get a lot out of these sessions, many return to the same old bad habits shortly after the training. My personal preferred approach is working with your cybersecurity professional(s) to develop an ongoing training program designed specifically for your company. Training topics and training paths can be laid out for individual departments, training progress and knowledge checks can be tracked, and adjustments

LESSONS IN LEADERSHIP
Effective Listening
Overcoming these barriers can help you improve relationships and spark new ideas
F
or every leader, the benefits of becoming a better listener are considerable. Effective listening improves the quality of our relationships, encourages people to be more open with us and allows us to be open to new ideas and ways of doing things. But the fact is, listening is really hard work. And even those of us who consciously work to improve our listening skills often fall short. So, what makes listening so difficult? First, we have developed some bad habits. Consider growing up in a family where dinnertime was filled with spirited, sometimes contentious, discussions and debates. You may have learned to talk and express your opinions without taking into consideration that you may be talking over others in your family. In most situations, the one who talked the loudest and most persuasively was in control. What you probably didn’t learn was how to listen to another point of view. The fact is, many bad listening habits are picked up in the home. But beyond developing bad listening habits, there are barriers that make truly effective listening so challenging. They can be psychological, environmental, personal or physical (i.e., hunger or fatigue). Consider some of the following barriers to listening that stand in the way of us really being in sync with someone: Self-absorption: We are intrinsically self-oriented. The truth is, even the most altruistic people, at some level, are more interested in themselves than other people. We like our own opinion, our own words, and the sound of our own voice more than we do someone else’s. This is not necessarily wrong; it’s just something we have to be aware of as it gets in the way of us being a great listen-er. Distractions: Whether mental, physical or environmental, distractions are a barrier to effective listening. If there are multiple conversations going on around you or if you are in a loud restaurant for example, you need to work even harder to focus in on the person’s voice and tune out the other noise. Add to that a headache or other physical or mental stressor and important words will fall on deaf ears. The great listeners recognize these distractions and make a conscious effort to tune them out. Impatience: Most of us are extremely impatient and we have a limited attention span. Think about how we watch TV these days, at the ready with the remote control. If a program doesn’t catch our interest in a few seconds—‘ZAP’—on to the next station. The problem comes when this mentality plays itself out in our communication with others. If someone isn’t saying something that compels us in a very powerful way—‘ZAP!’—we’re on to another station or have gone off in our mind to an-other place. This barrier is also compounded by social media, where everything is in smaller, di-gestible, 15-30 second pieces. Anything longer and our need 14

September 2020
for something more stimulating takes over. Apathy: If you think you’re not interested in what a person has to say, you’re not going to be able to listen intently. If you feel the subject matter doesn’t pertain to you, isn’t going to help you, or is something you’ve heard a million times before, you create a mindset that won’t let the speaker’s words touch you. “Been there, done that” is how a lot of people feel and it is also a major barrier to fully concentrating and truly listening. Inner voice: The things we say to ourselves while someone else is speaking can get in the way of really listening. Your inner voice may be saying, “Will she ever stop talking?” Or, “This is such old news; I’m wasting my time.” Or, worse, you completely zone out and are working on your mental “to do” list of anything else you believe you should be doing except being present in this conversa-tion. You can’t possibly hear what’s being said when you’re talking to yourself. What do you think is the biggest barrier to you being a better listener? PSE&G’s Tropical Storm Isais Response
Utility company to reimburse customers for spoiled food and medicine
P
SE&G is expanding its claims policy due to the COVID-19 pandemic so that customers whose electrical service was interrupted by Tropical Storm Isaias for at least 72 hours can be reimbursed for spoiled food and medication. The tropical storm knocked out power for more than 575,000 customers in New Jersey, making it the fifthmost destructive storm in our company’s 100plus year history. “We recognize that losing power in August, together with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, was a hardship for many of our customers,” PSE&G President Dave Daly said. “Given the unique combination of circumstances, we believe the right thing to do is to expand our claims process to ease the burden on the customers most impacted by Tropical Storm Isaias.” PSE&G will reimburse residential customers up to $250 and commercial customers up to $5,000 for food spoilage if their service was interrupted for 72 hours or longer between Aug. 4 and 12, 2020 because of Tropical Storm Isaias. For residential customers, food spoilage claims of $150 or less must include an itemized list. Food spoilage claims over $150 must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, canceled checks or photographs of spoiled items). Separately, customers will be reimbursed for losses, up to a maximum of $300, for prescription medications that spoiled due to lack of refrigeration. Customers must provide an itemized list of the medications and proof of loss (for example: pharmacy prescription label or pharmacy receipt identifying the medicine). Commercial customers applying for reimbursement must supply an itemized list of spoiled food and proof of loss (invoices, inventory lists, bank statements). Customers can apply for reimbursement at pseg.com/claims. Reimbursement claims cannot be processed over the phone. Customers have until Sept. 16, 2020, to file claims. Reimbursement is expected to take up to 60 business days from when a proper claim form is completed and submitted to PSE&G. 16

Test Your Heating Systems Now
PSE&G offers free service call to gas customers through Sept. 13
C
hilly weather will be here before you know it. PSE&G, New Jersey’s largest utility, IS encouragING its residential gas heating customers to test their heating equipment now so they can be confident systems will operate safely and efficiently when temperatures begin to drop. If you have a problem starting your system, a PSE&G service technician will check it for free now through September 13. From September 14 through October 31, there will be a $25 charge to have PSE&G check and/or start the system. To make an appointment, you can call 1-800-350-PSEG (7734) or schedule online at nj.myaccount.pseg.com. “It’s important to inspect your gas-fired heating system now to ensure it will work properly when you need it most,” said Joe Forline, PSE&G vice president, Gas Operations. “Many customers can take care of issues such as an unlit pilots, turning on emergency switches, and adjusting thermostats, but we’re here to help when needed. These simple checks can ensure your heater is ready.” How to check your heating system: • Check that the area surrounding the unit is free of combustible items including boxes, paper, clothing, paint and other flammables.
September 2020
UTILITY & INFRASTRUCTURE
• Make sure that the flue pipe is connected and in good condition. • If you have a hot water boiler, check that the indicator on the pressure gauge falls into the normal range (12-15 psi cold). • If you have a steam heating system, check the water level in the sight glass. If it is low, turn on the water supply valve to bring the water level up to the halfway mark, and then turn off the valve. • For warm-air furnace systems, check and replace dirty air filters. Check that the blower door is closed tight and correctly secured. • Make sure that all controls, valves and electrical switches are in the “on” position. How to start your heating system: If the unit is equipped with a pilot, confirm that it is lit. If the pilot is out, follow the instructions on the heating unit to relight it.
Let the pilot light burn a few minutes before continuing. Many heating units use a form of automatic ignition. Review the starting instructions located on the unit before continuing. Set each thermostat mode to “heat” (if equipped), and raise the setting five degrees above room temperature. The heating system should start within a minute or two. Let the unit run a few minutes to ensure it is operating normally and then return all controls to their previous settings. If you’re having problems: Need help starting the system? PSE&G will perform this service free-of-charge for customers who schedule an appointment through September 13. Not working properly? PSE&G customers can log in to My Account at pseg.com or call 1-800-350-7734 anytime to schedule repair services.

J. Fletcher Creamer, Jr. (“Fletch”) Is Retiring J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc. announces new leadership team
J.
Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc. (“Creamer”), a leading specialty contractor, has announced the retirement of its longtime Chief Executive Officer and is introducing a new senior leadership team. J. Fletcher Creamer, Jr. (“Fletch”), the company’s CEO since 2006, and the grandson of founder J. Fletcher Creamer II, will retire in September 2020. Joseph “Joe” Walsh, who joined Creamer in 1995 and has served as its President since 2006, will become the new Chief Executive Officer. Vice President Martin “Marty” Downs, Jr., who has been with the company since 2002, will become President. “I’m leaving the operation of the company that my grandfather and father started in incredibly capable hands,” said Fletch. “Joe and Marty know our company, our people and our clients. I have absolute confidence in their ability to continue growing Creamer and providing our customers with best-inclass services.” The Creamer name has been synonymous with contracted services for nearly 100 years. The company was among the original contractors on the building of The George Washington Bridge in New York in the 1920’s. Creamer was acquired by APi Group, Inc. in 2016 and continues to operate as an independent brand within the APi family of companies. “Following in Fletch’s footsteps is humbling,” said Joe Walsh. “Fletch is an industry legend, not just in the Northeast, but across the United States. The Creamer impact and legacy is hard to overstate, and I look forward to working with Marty to build upon our already strong reputation.” “Our people truly are the differentiator at Creamer,” said Marty Downs. “Creating strong leaders is part of the culture that the Creamer family built. We are incredibly fortunate to have

FUNDING & FINANCING
New Funding Source for Local Businesses
Equity crowdfunding closes the “funding gap” for New Jersey businesses
T
here is a very real business “Funding Gap” in the United States. Many companies, from entrepreneurial start-ups to established small and midsized businesses, have faced it. Funding business growth or an expansion is not always something that traditional capital sources – such as banks, non-bank lenders or private equity – can do. However, New Jersey businesses now have a new capital source alternative: Intrastate Equity Crowdfunding. New Jersey companies can now raise up to $1 million via a New Jersey crowdfunding web site, or portal. And individual investors who are residents of New Jersey can invest up to $5,000 in any New Jersey company’s crowdfunding. “There are many types of crowdfunding,” said Christopher Frey, founder and president of the state’s first and only authorized and registered equity crowdfunding portal Crowd Funding NJ Inc. “Platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, which are charity and rewards-based portals, are well known to those familiar
with crowdfunding. And accredited investors (the wealthy) have been participating in real estate and equity crowdfunding for several years. But now equity crowdfunding is available to all investors and offers New Jersey businesses the ability to raise capital in exchange for a small stake in the company.” Frey recognized the need that equity crowdfunding could meet during his 20 years of experience operating CFO Solutions Inc., a contract CFO service for startups and privately held family businesses. “I’ve seen countless companies reach a point where their existing capital is fully utilized and there is nothing available to fund the next stage or to pursue a growth opportunity,” he said. “It could be an entrepreneurial start-up that has a solid business plan, but is too early stage for angel investors or venture capitalists to consider, or it could be a family-owned business that has identified an expansion opportunity that is outside their bank’s lending parameters. Traditional sources of capital are limited in what they can or will do in
these situations, but an equity crowdfunding can meet the need and can be a very cost-effective source of growth capital.” To learn more about closing your own “funding gap” with a New Jersey intrastate equity crowdfunding, visit CrowdFundingNJ.com or email info@crowdfundingnj.com. Investors may then make direct investments in Issuers through the Portal. meadowlandsmedia.com

CAREERS & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
What do we do now?
Business plans and career plans have been disrupted.
T
he COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world of business and everyone in it. The careers of many executives, managers and others involved in the global business community have been altered in ways that nobody could have imagined. Unfortunately, this crisis has highlighted the lack of planning by many. Everyone working for a company anywhere typically assumed that the company had a plan for them, as well as for the longterm growth and profitability of the firm. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Most companies, except for the biggest, do not have a current business plan. Even the largest don’t have well thought out contingency plans for pandemics. Additionally, their employees do not have career plans. So in many cases there were people, those working for companies without long term strategic plans for their continued growth and profitability, who did not have a contingency plan for their careers either. Now many of these companies and those that worked for them are wondering, “What do we do now”? Add to this the perpetual advances in technology and we have the new world of work. Underlying all of this is the fact that many people have become accustomed to somebody else taking care of them. From birth through their education around 22, Mom and Dad took care of them and then when they started working the company took care of them. Now that this historical security blanket is disintegrating, many will now have to determine how they are going to survive in the new world of work. 22

Another fact that very few realize is that they are a brand and have to market themselves in the same way the brands that they buy are marketed. The 4 P’s of marketing – product, promotion, price and place – apply to them as much as a product. In effect you are the product and have to package yourself. Who is promoting you? No one! You have to promote yourself. Likewise, you have to price yourself for what you are really worth – the value you provide. And lastly, you have to be out there at the right place, which today is largely the internet. If you are going to survive and prosper in the new world of work you have to develop your unique value proposition i.e. your personal brand. You must market yourself. What is your unique value proposition? Robert M. Donnelly is an author, educator and brand builder for businesses and individuals.
