MEAKUSMA IS BACK!

After two difficult years, the Meakusma Festival is back and we could not be more thrilled!

Covid-19 and the July 2021 floods in East Belgium threw us for a loop, forcing us to cancel two festival editions. Now we are back with our biggest lineup ever, effectively booking many artists that were booked for last year's cancelled edition, next to many new ones of course.

Meakusma would have had a much more difficult time were it not for the continued and dedicated support of Isabelle Weykmans, minister of culture for the German-speaking community of Belgium. We have always very much enjoyed working with her and her openness to new ideas and initiatives is remarkable. She has taken it upon herself to support culture in general in East Belgium during the past two difficult years, not only working closely with Meakusma, but with many other organisations heavily impacted by the pandemic as well.

We would furthermore like to extend our thanks to our partners for their continued support. Their trust in us is vital to the way in which Meakusma works.

Last, but not least, we would like to thank you, our audience and all the participating artists in all things Meakusma, for your unrelenting enthusiasm. We would not exist, were it not for you.

Because of the aftermath of the pandemic and the current uncertain times worldwide, we are experiencing more cancellations and last minute changes, a phenomenon impacting all festivals these days. The PROGRAM UPDATE section of the festival website will inform you about all changes made to the festival lineup.

Thank you and we hope you enjoy the festival!

Optimo Kashual Plastik Meakusma

Philipp Matalla works with both popular and avant-garde concepts. He processes opposing influences to free himself from the usual patterns of electronic music and club culture. Collages of seemingly disparate spheres, such as texture and structure, or organism and technology, lead to clashes that are frequently expressed in his music. Loose, trippy, far-reaching, Philipp Matalla’s inimitable sound is a serious patchwork, creating a vibrant psychedelic world.

GRID RAVAGE BE

Dropa Disc

Yves De Mey, Gino Coomans & Louis Evrard

Grid Ravage’s debut album for Dropa Disc sounds organic, just like their live performances, the music being born on the spot. The tight drumming of Louis Evrard (Ottla), the razor-sharp cello of Gino Coomans (Sheldon Siegel) and the permeating electronics of Yves De Mey naturally flow into each other. The result is strikingly versatile and accessible, with tension building up in every track, diffusing the boundaries between the three performers. In this way, these three gifted musicians create a slightly paranoid, menacing, noirish atmosphere, definitely suitable as a soundtrack for imaginary night walks through the city.

THURSDAY-SUNDAY 11H-20H

The Sonic Chair sound pieces concept was developed for the “soundwaves” series on sound art which ran in Cologne in 2017 and 2018 and was conceived and developed by curator Georg Dietzler. The first series of SONIC CHAIRS was built in 2008. Similar to a musical instrument, the shape of the SONIC CHAIR is determined by the acoustics. Sitting in the sound center of the chair supports the spatiality of the recordings. With loudspeakers in the armchair canopy, low bass frequencies are transmitted to the user’s back via a structure-borne sound membrane. The presented sound pieces move between abstract, herbaceous, electronic ambience, puristic field recordings, layered guitar drones, manipulated everyday objects and generated noise narratives, as well as sound art, jazz and experimental pop.
