06.09.19 18:00 ~ Heuboden ~ PLIC:PLOC (Panoptica, Supervue – BE) From Liège in Belgium, Plic Ploc was the head of programming of the Panoptica festival for electronic music and visuals that ran from 2002 till 2006. He is nowadays involved in the Supervue festival where he is an electronic music programming consultant and resident DJ. His sets are influenced by ambient, modern classical, exotica, hauntology and field recordings, and dwell in drones, drops, nature sounds and sweet or hypnotic melodies. Plic Ploc aus Lüttich war für das Programm des Panoptica Festivals für elektronische Musik und Visuals, welches von 2002 bis 2004 lief. Heute ist er im Supervue Festival involviert, wo er bei der Programmgestaltung beteiligt ist und als Resident DJ fungiert. Seine Sets sind durch Ambient, moderne Klassik, Exotica, Hauntology und Field Recordings beeinflusst und tauchen in Drones, Naturklänge und süße oder hypnotische Melodien ein.

Als angesehene DJ und Host einer Radioshow auf NTS, zehrt Elena Colombi von einem großen Feld von Einflüssen und Inspirationen. Industrial Rhythmen, pulsierender Techno, Ambient Atmosphären, ausgeflippter Disco, Balearic, Proto-House und mehr definieren ihre dynamischen Sets, die sich über Trends hinwegsetzen.

19:00 ~ Kesselraum ~ UGNE & MARIA (Forgotten Plants – BE) Ugne & Maria is a collaboration between Marija Rasa Kudabaite and Ugne Vyliaudaite, both originally from Lithuania but now residing in Belgium. They use violin, synthesisers and sampling techniques to conjure up down-tempo as well as dance-orientated tracks that dwell on multilayered compositional principles and improvisation. Ugne & Maria ist die Kollaboration zwischen Marija Rasa Kudabaite und Ugne Vyliaudaite, beide ursprünglich aus Litauen und nun in Belgien wohnhaft. Sie nutzen Violine, Synthesizer und Sample Techniken, um Downtempo und Dance-orientierte Tracks zu zaubern, die auf mehrschichtige kompositorische Prinzipien und Improvisation basieren.

Johann Mazé is a drummer and percussionist from Bordeaux, France. He plays in various groups such as Le Cercle des Mallissimalistes, France Sauvage, Nouvelles Impressions d’Afrique, Lord Rectangle and the Ensemble UN. From maximalism to calypso to noise and contemporary music, his spectrum is vast. Johann Mazé ist ein Schlagzeuger und Perkussionist aus Bordeaux, Frankreich. Dieb13 is the performing name of Dieter Kovačič, a Vienna-based avant-garde musician. He has also performed under the names Takeshi Fumimoto, Echelon, Dieter Bohlen, and dieb14. He released his first solo album in 2000 and has gone on to perform in a number of collaborations with other notable performers, including Burkhard Stangl, erikm, Mats Gustafsson and the John Butcher Group. Martin Tétreault is a free improvisation musician and visual artist from Quebec, Canada. Often using the turntable as the basis for his experimental music, he has over 60 releases, featuring him solo or in collaborations with people such as Kevin Drumm and Otomo Yoshihide. They disseminate music via Stroom and Planet Rescue. Sebastian und Max von Private Vent studieren beide in Köln. Sebastian ist aus Duisburg, Max aus Ost-Berlin. Sie verbreiten Musik auf Stroom und Planet Rescue.

20:30 ~ Kesselraum ~ BEN BERTRAND (Les Albums Claus – BE) Armed with a bass clarinet and backed with sound effects, Ben Bertrand touches upon contemporary classical music. A musical heir to composers like Jon Hassell and Gavin Bryars, his musical universe is warm and minimal with modal, hypnotic grooves accentuated with microtonal clarinet phrases. Bewaffnet mit einer Bassklarinette und gedeckt durch Soundeffekte, umstreicht Ben Bertrand zeitgenössische klassische Musik. In der musikalischen Tradition von Komponisten wie Jon Hassell und Gavin Bryars, entwirft er ein warmes, minimalistisches musikalisches Universum, mit modalen, hypnotischen Grooves, akzentuiert durch mikrotonale Klarinetten Phrasen.

The long, improvised musical designs are drenched in jazz, improv and modern music. Light is used to intimately accentuate the performance. 21:00 ~ Kühlraum ~ DON THE TIGER (Crammed, Otoroku – ES) Don The Tiger is the solo project of Adrián de Alfonso, a ubiquitous presence in Barcelona’s underground and nomadic guitarist who has played with Lydia Lunch, Mark Cunningham, Robert Forster and Carla Bozulich. He mixes rumba, baroque fantasy, guabina and flamenco with musique concrète and elaborate sampling techniques into a deeply expressive and melodically exuberant musical amalgam. 12

22:30 ~ Kesselraum ~ KONRAD KRAFT (TAL,Auf Abwegen- GER) Konrad Kraft explores the endless possible variants of electronic sound synthesis. Influenced by musique concrète, the Berlin school, punk and industrial music, he set out on a musical path at the end of the 70s that would see him work as a techno and trance producer, a mastering engineer and label boss, recently refocusing on experimental music. Konrad Kraft erforscht die zahllosen Variationen der elektronischen Synthese. Beeinflusst durch Musique Concrète, die Berliner Schule, Punk und Industrial Musik, hat er sich in den 70ern auf eine musikalische Reise begeben, bei der er als Techno- und Tranceproduzent, Toningenieur und Labelbetreiber aktiv war. In den letzten Jahren hat er seinen Fokus erneut auf experimentelle Musik gerichtet.

22:30 ~ Kühlraum ~ GOING & TETUZI AKIYAMA (Silent Water, Meakusma – BE) & MANUEL MOTA Going is the belgian-based band of drummers João Lobo and Mathieu Calleja and keyboardists/synthesists Giovanni Di Domenico and Pak Yan Lau that delves into post-rock, improvised, experimental and minimal music. Tetuzi Akiyama is an experimental guitarist heavily into free improvisation and noise. Besides guitar, he plays electronics, viola and self-made instruments. Manuel Mota studied and experimented with prepared guitar, creating music based on the drone, influenced by Phill Niblock and La Monte Young. Die in Belgien ansässige Band Going besteht aus João Lobo und Mathieu Calleja an den Schlagzeugen sowie Giovanni Di Domenico und Pak Yan Lau an den Keyboards und Electronics. Detlef Weinrich’s mix of wave, krautrock, ethno rhythms, psychedelic music and techno defines the sound of the Salon des Amateurs in Düsseldorf. Since the 1990s, he is a part of the band Kreidler and operates the Toresch project together with Viktoria Wehrmeister and Jan Werner. His productions are defined through obscure arpeggios and slow-release hypnosis, turning genres into blurry scenarios in which you easily lose yourself. Detlef Weinrich steht mit seiner Mischung aus Wave, Krautrock, Ethno Rhythmen, Psychedelic Music und Techno wie keine anderer für den Sound des Salon des Amateurs in Düsseldorf. Solo als Tolouse Low Trax unterwegs, ist er seit den 1990ern Teil der Band Kreidler und betreibt das Projekt Toresch gemeinsam mit Viktoria Wehrmeister und Jan Werner. Seine Produktionen sind definiert durch obskure Arpeggios und langsam fließende Hypnose, wobei er Genres in verschwommene Szenarien verwandelt, in denen man sich leicht verliert.

23:00 ~ Halle ~ SAGAT (Vlek, Bepotel – BE) Sagat’s musical universe forever shifts into unexpected syncopations and melodic elements. His elusive mix of seemingly contradictory elements reflects his stance on his surroundings and the eternally fluctuating variability of city life. Sagats musikalisches Universum verschiebt sich ständig zwischen unerwarteter Synkopierung und melodischen Elementen. Sein schwer fassbarer Mix zwischen scheinbar widersprüchlichen Elementen reflektiert seine Haltung zu seinem Umfeld und den ständig fluktuierenden Variablen des Stadtlebens.

He co-founded the Hessle Audio label in 2007. Ben UFO gilt als einer der mutigsten und vielfältigsten DJs der aktuellen Dance-Music-Szene. Mit feinem Gespür und großer technischer Sicherheit streift er durch musikalische Ären und Stile. 2007 war er Mitbegründer des Labels Hessle Audio.

00:00 ~ Kesselraum ~ KEITH FULLERTON (Editions Mego, Mimaroglu – USA) WHITMAN Keith Fullerton Whitman’s work is informed by ambient music, drone, musique concrète and krautrock. He stands as one of the most revered composers and performers working in the field of experimental music today. He released drill ‘n bass as Hrvatski and now runs the Mimaroglu Music Sales distribution which offers an extensive collection of avant-garde music. 14

Keith Fullerton Whitmans Werk ist geprägt durch Ambient, Drone, Musique Concrète und Krautrock. Er ist einer der gefeiertsten Komponisten und Performer der aktuellen experimentellen Musikszene. Unter dem Namen Hrvatski veröffentlichte er Drill´n´Bass, heute betreibt er den Musikvertrieb Mimaroglu Music mit einer umfangreichen Kollektion von Avantgarde Musik.

00:30 ~ Kühlraum ~ BENJAMIN FINGER, JOHN HEGRE AND MIA ZABELKA (Karl – AUT/UK) Multi-instrumentalists Benjamin Finger, John Hegre and Mia Zabelka stretch the boundaries of electronic music, ambient, psychedelia and drone. Finger’s music defies definition, admitting to a desire to allow everything. Norwegian guitarist, songwriter and sound engineer Hegre is one of the cornerstones of Norwegian noise music. Zabelka’s work is visceral, cerebral and sensual. The Austrian violinist, improviser and composer has opened up the traditional understanding of her instrument towards improvisation, experimental music and sound art. 15

Mix Mup is the club music alter ego of Lorenz Lindner. Also known for his contemplative ambient and sound art project Molto, Mix Mup’s sound is unconventional and slippery, lurking on the outskirts of house and techno. He has released on meakusma, Mikrodisko, Hinge Finger, The Trilogy Tapes, etc, and runs the MM/KM project together with Kassem Mosse. Mix Mup ist das Clubmusik Alter Ego von Lorenz Lindner. Ebenfalls bekannt für sein kontemplatives Ambient und Klangkunstprojekt Molto, ist Mix Mups Sound unkonventionell und schwer greifbar, am Rande von House und Techno schlummernd. Er veröffentlichte auf meakusma, Mikrodisko, Hinge Finger, The Trilogy Tapes und betreibt das Projekt MM/KM mit Kassem Mosse.

Die Multi-Instrumentalisten Benjamin Finger, John Hegre und Mia Zabelka dehnen die Grenzen elektronischer Musik, Ambient, Psychedelia und Drone aus. Fingers Musik entzieht sich jeder Definition, der Lust nachgebend alles zuzulassen. Der Norwegische Gitarrist, Songwriter und Toningenieur Hegre ist einer der Pfeiler der Norwegischen Noise Musikszene. Zabelkas sinnliches Werk zielt auf Körper und Geist. Die Österreichische Violinistin, Impro-Musikerin und Komponistin hat das traditionelle Verständnis ihrer Instrumente hin zu Improvisation, experimenteller Musik und Soundart geöffnet.

00:30 ~ Heuboden ~ DECHA (Malka Tuti, Toresch – GER) Decha is Viktoria Wehrmeister who fronts Toresch, a project together with Tolouse Low Trax and Jan Wagner. Her solo work is personal, abstract yet playful. Minimalist and highly creative, her songs are subtle, urgent and contemplative. Decha ist Viktoria Wehrmeister von Toresch, ihrem gemeinsamen Projekt mit Tolouse Low Trax und Jan Wagner. Ihr Solo-Werk ist persönlich, abstrakt und doch verspielt. Ihre subtilen, zwingenden und kontemplativen Songs sind minimalistisch und höchst kreativ. 16

Marja Ahti is a Swedish-Finnish musician and composer working with field recordings and other acoustic sound material. Combined with synthesizers and electronic feedback. She explores the borderland where sounds start mimicking each other. Hovering between abstraction and the deeply familiar, she moves into a realm of poetic metaphor where sounds are set in relation to each other, fleetingly mirroring and shadow-dancing. Marja Ahti ist eine schwedisch-finnische Musikerin und Komponistin die mit Field Recordings und anderem akustischen Klangmaterial arbeitet, kombiniert mit Synthesizer und elektronischem Feedback. Sie erforscht Randgebiete wo Klänge beginnen sich zu imitieren. Zwischen Abstraktion und familiären Klängen schwebend, begibt sie sich ins Reich poetischer Metaphern wo Sounds in Relation zueinander gesetzt werden und sich flüchtig spiegeln.

Thomas Edison invented both the phonograph, the first recording device able to reproduce recorded sound, and the motion picture camera. When sound cinema appeared, the first experiments with sounds were done by inversing the tape the sound was recorded on and thus tape music was born. Later on, technological advancements were also used to innovate and to create the first computer-based films. Recorded music was then often used as a starting point for the creation of rhythm patterns on screen. Finally, in its use of the material element of the film itself in films made of cutting up a repetition of the raw 23

07.09.19 film material, sound follows the image in rhythmic and noisy patterns. An intriguing voyage through the power of moving images and sound, all shown in the original 16mm format. Waltraud Blischke is an artist and lecturer that also works as a DJ. After projects with a-Musik and Sonig, she also worked for the Chaos Computer Club, the Institut für Musik und Medien of the Robert Schumann university in Düsseldorf and a sound installation as part of an exhibition curated by Ralf Brög and programmed by Kurt Dahlke. The Yellow Book audiovisual performance will unfold over several hours. Jens-Uwe Beyer & Albert Oehlen präsentieren erstmals ihr Mammutprojekt Yellow Book als audiovisuelle Installation. Das Projekt erscheint als LP-Box mit 8 Schallplatten in Kooperation mit Gagosian auf Magazine und digital. Live wird die Musik mit Visuals als durchlaufende Installation dargeboten. Jens-Uwe Beyer veröffentlichte das Album The Emissary auf Kompakt Pop Ambient. Albert Oehlen ist Maler. 2015 erhielt Oehlen zusammen mit Kanye West die Ehrendoktorwürde der School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Bei der Verleihung wollte Kanye West die Veranstaltung vorzeitig verlassen, wurde aber von der Professorenschaft gezwungen, bis zum Ende der Ansprache von Albert Oehlen sitzen zu bleiben Die audiovisuelle Darbietung des gemeinsamen Projekts wird sich über mehrere Stunden entfalten.

In this large-scale interdisciplinary project Bielski constructs a world which surprises, challenges and confuses. Breaking the Codes: Zamenhof Project is situated somewhere between a concert, a museum visit and a 55

theatre or dance production. The international cast, consisting of actors, musicians and dancers who between them speak seven languages, involves the audience in an exploration of communication (or miscommunication) and language. The audience will not stay seated the whole time, but will be free to discover the space and installations together with the performers. Performing Breaking The Codes in Kelmis is fitting as Kelmis or Neutral Moresnet as it was once called, was in 1907 declared to be an Esperanto republic called Amikejo, Esperanto for „place of friendship“ and the such only place in the world where this language was ever officially spoken. Neutral Moresnet was a small Belgian-Prussian condominium that existed from 1816 to 1920. During the First World War, it was annexed by Germany, only to be awarded to Belgium through the Treaty of Versailles, effective January 10, 1920 and was then renamed Kelmis. Polishborn Bielski has been an artist in residence with Gaudeamus since 2017. As a young theatre-maker, he is given space there in which to develop his expressive musical theatre works. Breaking the Codes: Zamenhof Project is a coproduction of Stichting Futurists and Gaudeamus. The performance is part of the 100 Jahre Ostbelgien celebrations. The event will start with a tour of the Museum Vieille Montagne at 3:30 PM and then continues at the Kulturzentrum Select with the performance starting at 4:30 PM. The performance takes an hour and a half and is part of the Meakusma Festival program. It can be accessed with the festival ticket, although separate tickets are also available. The performance is intended for 18+ audiences. There will be stroboscope lights, loud music and strong language used during the performance. Die internationale Besetzung besteht aus Schauspielern, Musikern und Tänzern die insgesamt sieben Sprachen sprechen. Sie beziehen das Publikum mit ein und ermutigen es zu einer Erforschung von Kommunikation (oder Kommunikationsfehlern) und Sprache. Die Besucher bleiben dabei nicht auf ihren Stühlen sitzen, sondern haben die Möglichkeit den Raum und die Installationen gemeinsam mit den Darstellern zu entdecken. Breaking The Codes in Kelmis aufzuführen ist passend, da Kelmis oder Neutral Moresnet, wie es einst hieß, 1907 unter dem Namen Amikejo als Esperanto Republik ausgerufen wurde. Amikejo bedeutet „Ort der Freundschaft“ auf Esperanto und es ist der einzige Ort auf der Welt, wo die Sprache jemals offiziell gesprochen wurde. Der in Polen geborene Regisseur Jerzy Bielski ist seit 2017 in einer Künstlerresidenz bei Gaudeamus tätig. Der junge Theatermacher erhält dort den Raum seine expressiven Musiktheaterarbeiten zu entwerfen. Breaking the Codes: Zamenhof Project ist eine Co-Produktion von Stichting Futurists und Gaudeamus. Die Veranstaltung findet im Rahmen des Jubiläums des 100-jährigen Bestehens von Ostbelgien statt. Die Veranstaltung beginnt um 15:30 Uhr mit einer Einführung im Museum Vieille Montagne und wird ab 16:30 Uhr im Kulturzentrum Select fortgesetzt, wo die Darbietung beginnt. Die Dauer der Aufführung beträgt 90 Minuten und sie wird im Rahmen des Meakusma Festivals durchgeführt. Sie kann mit einem Festivalticket besucht werden, es werden aber auch Einzeltickets am Eingang erhältlich sein. Die Darbietung richtet sich an ein 18+ Publikum. Es wird Stroboskop Lichter, laute Musik und Kraftausdrücke geben.

The long, improvised musical designs are drenched in jazz, improv and modern music. Light is used to intimately accentuate the performance. 13 vinyl records, 13 glue casts, text Four videos (colour, sound) Four flat-panel displays, four headsets Graphic Varispeed, a work in progress, is a collaboration between Martin Tétreault, a Montreal artist and turntablist, and Dieter Kovačič, alias dieb13, a Vienna-based artist and turntablist who cuts his own vinyl discs. The project began in March 2014 when Tétreault and Kovačič were on tour together in Europe. Dieter gave Martin a record that he had cut himself. Martin made a cast of the vinyl disc using wood glue, following a technique that he had developed. The next day, once it had dried, he gave it to Dieter. When he got back to Vienna, Dieter made a copy of the glue cast, and mailed the resulting vinyl disc to Martin. Martin then made another cast. . . and so on. The two artists have been exchanging vinyl discs and glue casts by mail ever since. As of September 1st, 2019, 13 iterations exist. The pair have yet to set a limit on how many will be made, nor on how long the exchange by mail will last. Perhaps they never will. The work is now accompanied by four videos, allowing the visitor to see and hear four performances. ~ The first was given by Martin Tétreault on April 18, 2017, at the premiere showing of the installation, as part of the exhibition Où sont les sons ? / Where are sounds? held at CENTRALE for contemporary art, Brussels, from April 20 to September 10, 2017; curator: Nicole Gingras. ~ The second was given by dieb13 on August 23, 2018, at the second showing of the installation, as part of the exhibition trust*us: Die Kunst der Freundschaft held at Galerie 5020, Salzburg, from August 23 to October 6, 2018; curators: Karin Fisslthaler, Thomas Hörl, Peter Kozek and Lydia Nsiah. ~ The third was given by Martin Tétreault on January 24, 2019, at a showing of the installation at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, as part of Persisiting Realities exhibition for the 20th edition of CTM, January 25 to March 17, 2019; co-curators: Nicole Gingras and Eric Mattson. ~ The fourth will be given by dieb13 on September 6, 2019, at a showing of the installation at IKOB Art Contemporary Museum, Eupen, as part of the Meakusma festival. 58

SPECIALS 13 Vinyl Schallplatten, 13 Klebevorrichtungen, Text Vier Videos (Farbe, Sound) Vier Flachbildschirme, Vier Headsets Graphic Varispeed, ein Projekt in Arbeit, ist eine Kollaboration zwischen Martin Tétreault, einem Künstler und Schallplattenkünstler aus Montreal, und Dieter Kovačič, alias dieb13, einem in Wien wohnhaften Schallplattenkünstler, der seine eigenen Platten schneidet und und presst. Das Projekt nahm seinen Anfang im März 2014, als die beiden Künstler gemeinsam auf Tour in Europa waren. Dieter übergab Martin eine Schallplatte, die er selber gepresst hatte. Martin erstellte daraufhin einen Abdruck der Platte mit Holzkleber, anhand einer Technik die er selbst entworfen hat. Diese Kopie gab er Dieter, der wiederum einen Abdruck der Kopie erstellte. Seitdem schicken sich die Künstler regelmäßig neue Abdrucke zu und zum jetzigen Standpunkt existieren 13 Exemplare. Ein Ende des Projekts ist noch nicht in Aussicht. Das Werk wird begleitet durch vier Videos, was dem Besucher erlaubt vier Darbietungen zu sehen und zu hören. ~ Die erste Darbietung führte Martin Tétreault am 18. April 2017 bei der Premiere der Installation durch, welche als Teil der Ausstellung Où sont les sons ? / Where are sounds? im CENTRALE für zeitgenössische Kunst in Brüssel präsentiert wurde. ~ Die zweite Darbietung führte dieb13 (Dieter Kovačič) am 13. August 2018 bei der zweiten Präsentation der Installation durch, welche als Teil der Ausstellung trust*us: Die Kunst der Freundschaft in der Galerie 5020 in Salzburg stattfand. ~ Die dritte Darbietung führte Martin Tétreault am 24. Januar 2019 bei der Präsentation der Installation im Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin als Teil der Ausstellung Persisiting Realities im Rahmen der 20. Ausgabe des CTM Festivals durch. ~ Die vierte Darbietung wird dieb13 am 6. September 2019 im Rahmen des Meakusma Festivals im Ikob, Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Eupen durchführen.

The kiosk is a walk-in sound installation and stage designed and built as part of an Erasmus + youth project, the European sponsorship program. The collaboration between Meakusma and the Terraforma Festival in Milan materialized with the participation of young people from Belgium, Italy and Greece. The hexagonal structure can capture the background noise of specific environments using dedicated microphones amplified by loudspeakers in selfmade wooden boxes. At the festival, however, the installation is used as the venue for special performances. Among other things, the results of last year’s soundwalk recordings with field recording icon Chris Watson will be presented on the Kiosk’s six speakers. The seven participants of the soundwalk 59

SPECIALS have captured the natural sounds of the High Fens nature park with special microphones under the guidance of Chris Watson and his colleague Mike Harding. The resulting CD will be released in time for the festival and will be heard in public for the first time. Ladr.ache, a 6-piece women’s choir, operating on the edge of contemporary polyphony, will also perform at the Kiosk. Der Kiosk ist eine begehbare Soundinstallation und Bühne die im Rahmen eines Erasmus+ Jugendprojekts, dem Europäischen Förderungsprogramm entworfen und gebaut wurde. Bei der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Meakusma und dem Terraforma Festival in Mailand wurde die Umsetzung unter Beteiligung von jungen Menschen aus Belgien, Italien und Griechenland durchgeführt. Die sechseckige Struktur kann anhand spezifischer Mikrofone, verstärkt durch Lautsprecher in Selbstgebauten Holzboxen die Geräuschkulisse der Umgebung einfangen. Beim Festival wird die Installation hingegen als Schauplatz besonderer Performances genutzt. Unter anderem wird man die Ergebnisse der im vorigen Jahr durchgeführten Aufnahmen der Soundwalks mit Field-Recording Ikone Chris Watson auf den sechs Lautsprechern des Kiosk hören können. Sieben Teilnehmer haben unter Anleitung von Chris Watson und seinem Mitstreiter Mike Harding im Naturpark Hohes Venn die natürlichen Klänge der Umgebung mit speziellen Mikrofonen eingefangen. Die daraus entstandene CD wird pünktlich zum Festival veröffentlicht und erstmals öffentlich zu hören sein. Ladr. ache, ein 6-köpfiger Frauenchor, der sich scharf an der Grenze zeitgenössischer Polyphony bewegt, wird ebenfalls am Kiosk spielen.

Installation from Friday to Sunday Concerts : Friday 21:00 Saturday 12:00, 15:00, 18:00 Alter Schlachthof – 06.09-08.09.2019 ‘ABRUIT’ is an ongoing visual and sound performance held in and around a hide-out. The hide-out is the starting point for a bizarre-sounding installation that improvises with objects and the surroundings. The audience can only guess at what is going on inside the shelter, and are drawn into a story of imagination, suggestion and coincidence. ABRUIT uses a hide-out to make itself heard. Lots of arteries connect this central heart with sounding objects, scattered through the environment. An installation with a heart that continuously pumps and puffs. The piece consists of a hidden center from where tubes and wires lead to instruments scattered in the environment. By doing this, it also scans and reveals the acoustics of a space. Lukas De Clerck studied Radio at RITCS. As an artist he focusses on the possibilities of sound as a tool for hiding. He is also part of Collectief Publiek Geluid (in collaboration with Musica, C-takt), a collective that focusses on sound creation in public space. Dries Peeters obtained his master’s degree in drawing at Luca School of Arts in Ghent in 2017. First and foremost, Dries Peeters is a voice artist, sound artist and craftsman. He is also the singer in the music collective De Zwarte Zusters and part of Collectief Publiek Geluid. ‘ABRUIT’ ist eine durchlaufend visuelle und klangliche Performance, die in und um ein Versteck herum durchgeführt wird. Das Versteck ist Ausgangspunkt für eine bizarr klingende Installation, welche mit Objekten und der Umgebung improvisiert. Das Publikum kann nur erahnen was im Inneren des Unterstands geschieht. So werden sie in eine Geschichte voller Fantasie, Anregungen und Zufällen hineingezogen. ABRUIT nutzt das Versteck um sich Gehör zu verschaffen. Viele Arterien verbinden dieses zentrale Herzstück mit klanglichen Objekten, die in der Umgebung verstreut sind. Es ist eine Installation mit einem ständig pumpenden und dampfenden Herz. Das Stück besteht aus einem versteckten Zentrum, von wo aus Rohre und Kabel zu Instrumenten in der Umgebung führen, wodurch die Akustik des Raums gescannt und entfaltet wird. Lukas De Clerck studierte Radio am RITCS. Als Künstler legt er seinen Fokus auf die Möglichkeiten von Sound als Werkzeug zum Verstecken. Er ist auch Teil des Collectief Publiek Geluid (in Zusammenarbeit mit Musica, C-takt), einem Kollektiv, das sich auf Soundkreationen im öffentlichen Raum spezialisiert. Dries Peeters erhielt seinen Master in Zeichnen an der Luca School of Arts in Gent im Jahre 2017. Vorallem ist Peeters ein Stimmkünstler, Klangkünstler und Handwerker. The histories of film and electronic music are intimately linked. Thomas Edison invented both the first generations of recorders for sound and for image. When sound cinema appeared, the first experiments with sound were made by reversing the tape that the sound was recorded on - and thus tape music was born. Later, the technological advances were also used to innovate and create the first computer-generated films. Recorded music was then often used as a starting point for the creation of rhythmic patterns onscreen. Finally, in its use of the material element of the film itself in films made of cutting up and repetition of the raw film material, sound follows image in rhythmic and noisy patterns. An intriguing voyage in the power of moving images and sound, all shown in their original 16mm format. Die Geschichte des Films und die Geschichte der elektronischen Musik sind eng miteinander verbunden. Thomas Edison entwickelte sowohl die ersten Aufnahmegeräte für Sound als auch für Film. Als Kino mit Sound entstand, wurden die ersten Klangexperimente für Film anhand von Aufnahmen von Sound auf Tape durchgeführt - dies war die Geburt von Tape Musik. Später wurden technische Fortschritte auch genutzt, um die ersten computerbasierten Filme zu kreieren. Musikaufnahmen dienten oftmals als Startpunkt zur Herstellung von Rhythmusmustern auf dem Bildschirm. Schlussendlich folgt der Sound dem Bild in rhythmischen und klanglichen Mustern, die sich aus dem geschnittenen Rohmaterial des Films ergeben. Eine faszinierende Reise, die von der 62

⩥ MEAKUSMA MAGAZINE IN CONVERSATION

For the last two editions of the Meakusma Festival, a festival newspaper was published with artist interviews, background reports, record reviews and label portraits. In May of this year, the first issue of the now bi-annual magazine appeared as a continuation of the project. Together with the Goethe Institut, the second edition of this year’s magazine will now be available at the festival. In the future, we would like to use the potential offered by such a series of publications more regularly, in order to devote ourselves to specific topics that are related not only to the festival, but also to the other concert events and the releases on our label. The aim is not only to enjoy the concerts and 63

SPECIALS sound recordings we have produced as end products that can be consumed, but also to use them as a starting point to examine historical relationships, production conditions or the history of reception. Editorial responsibility is for Wolfgang Brauneis who lives and works in Cologne as a freelance art historian, collaborator of a-Musik and co-founder of the Institut für Betrachtung. Each issue involves international journalists and artists as authors. In addition, there are lectures and artist talks at the festival, where topics of the magazine will be taken up and developed and discussed further by the authors. For the sake of a real time extension to the Meakusma Magazine, chief editor Wolfgang Brauneis and regular contributor Philipp Höning will host a series of talks and lectures during the Meakusma Festival. As staff of the Aachen/Cologne based Institut Für Betrachtung (IFB) they are sharp observers of the contemporary art, literature and music world. Together with Hanna Bächer and Holger Adam, who are also writing for the Meakusma Magazin, they will lure several artists from the lineup into the X-Dream to discuss music from various perspectives, including the production conditions. The detailed program can be found on the board in front of the X-Dream (see map pg. 3) during the festival. Anlässlich der letzten beiden Ausgaben des Meakusma Festivals erschien jeweils eine Festivalzeitung mit Künstlerinterviews, Hintergrundberichten, Plattenrezensionen und Labelportraits. Im Mai diesen Jahres erschien als Fortführung des Projekts die erste Ausgabe des nun halbjährlich erscheinenden Magazins. Gemeinsam mit dem Goethe Institut wird nun die zweite Ausgabe präsentiert. Wir möchten das Potenzial, das eine derartige Veröffentlichungsreihe bietet, in Zukunft regelmäßiger nutzen, um uns einzelnen Themenkomplexen zu widmen, die im Zusammenhang nicht nur mit dem Festival, sondern auch mit den anderweitigen Konzertveranstaltungen und dem Programm unseres Labels stehen. Es geht darum, die von uns veranstalteten Konzerte und die produzierten Tonträger nicht nur als konsumierbare Endprodukte zu goutieren, sondern sie gleichzeitig als Ausgangspunkte zu nehmen, um historische Zusammenhänge, Produktionsbedingungen oder Rezeptionsgeschichte in den Blick zu nehmen. Redaktionell verantwortlich ist Wolfgang Brauneis, der in Köln als freischaffender Kunsthistoriker, Mitarbeiter von a-Musik und Mitbegründer des Institut für Betrachtung lebt und arbeitet. Bei jeder Ausgabe werden internationale Journalisten und Künstler als Autoren eingebunden. Brussels-based artist David Helbich (Surfacenoise Recordings, Belgian solutions, No Music,…) moves in his work between conceptual art and active participation. The compositions for the specially conceived “Audio Guide” invite you to take a 55-minute hike through the natural surroundings of the Alter Schlachthof. The pieces mix field recordings recorded on-site and in Eupen with instruments, beats and linguistic instructions that gradually lure the individual audience from a passive listener position to an active, co-performing role. The resulting trip takes visitors away from the festival site, at the same time into nature and into their own experience space, before slowly returning to the festival. Der in Brüssel wohnhafte Künstler David Helbich (Surfacenoise Recordings, Belgian solutions, No Music,…) bewegt sich in seinem Werk zwischen konzeptueller Kunst und aktiver Beteiligung. Die Kompositionen für den eigens konzipierten „Audio Guide“ laden zu einer ca. 55 Minuten dauernden Wanderung durch die Felder hinter dem Alten Schlachthof ein. Die Stücke mischen meist vor Ort und in Eupen gesammelte Feldaufnahmen mit Instrumenten, Beats und sprachlichen Anweisungen, die das individuelle Publikum nach und nach aus der passiven Hörerposition zu einer aktiven, mit-performenden Rolle begleiten. Der daraus resultierende Trip führt die Besucher weg vom Festivalgelände, zugleich rein in die Natur und in den eigenen Erfahrungsraum, bevor er langsam wieder zurück zum Festival geführt wird.

Zabriskie is a specialised bookshop based in Berlin with a focus on sub/ cultural and natural phenomena. It is almost like a private library – because the Zabriskies only present books that they personally value and like. You can find extraordinary things from the fields of underground music and film; utopian ideas and alternative ways of living; small press and artist publications; idleness and slowness; drugs and consciousness; natural history, nature writing, ecology and sustainability; gardening, self-sufficiency and DIY; walking, travelling and places; essays on philosophical and social issues; countercultural movements; strange and occult phenomena; phantastic, weird and experimental fiction; german and english. At the Meakusma festival, Zabriskie presents a selection focused on music and sound. Zabriskie ist ein spezialisierter Buchladen mit einem Fokus auf Phänomenen der Sub/kultur und der Natur, und Büchern auf Deutsch und Englisch. Er ist fast wie eine private Bibliothek – weil die Zabriskies nur Bücher präsentieren, die sie persönlich schätzen und mögen. ⩥ 54 SOUND

54 Sound is a completely handcrafted soundsystem developed by 54Kolaktiv and friends during a workshop in 2014. Having organized parties for years in Brussels, they decided to make their own mobile high quality soundsystem. Inspired by Jamaican and free party culture, the soundsystem was developed with the help of respected Belgian reggae crews. The Soundsystem will be used at the Hinterhof stage. 54 Sound ist ein Soundsystem, welches 2014 vom 54Kolaktiv und einigen Freunden bei einem Workshop in Brüssel selbstgebaut und entwickelt wurde. Nachdem das Kollektiv bereits seit einigen Jahren Parties in Brüssel organisiert hatte, entschieden sie sich ein mobiles Soundsystem nach jamaikanischem Vorbild zu schaffen. Dazu erhielten sie Hilfe einiger etablierter belgischer ReggaeCrews. Das Soundsystem kommt im Hinterhof zum Einsatz.

⩥ KASPAR HAMACHER

Taking nature as his basis, Kaspar Hamacher (1981), Eupen, (BE) is focused resolutely on physical rather than conceptual design. As he says himself, he feels more craftsman than designer. The things he can do with wood appeal to the imagination: whether it is a tree stump or a piece of leather, the key is authenticity in every step of his design process. Hamacher’s working 66

SPECIALS method always results in a unique, personal piece. A piece of design with a deeper meaning; with a soul. A selection of his work will be presented on the festival site. Der Designer Kaspar Hamacher (1981) aus Eupen empfindet sich selbst eher als Handwerker, denn als Designer. Die Natur dient als Basis seines Schaffens, welches weniger konzeptuell sondern vielmehr körperlich und konkret ist. Bei seinen Kreationen, ob nun aus Holzstämmen oder Lederstücken, steht die Authentizität im Mittelpunkt. Am Ende einer jeden Arbeit steht ein einzigartiges Stück, mit einem eigenen Charakter und einer eigenen Seele. Eine Auswahl aus Hamachers Katalog wird auf dem Festivalgelände verteilt zu finden sein.

We are happy to be able to announce that visuals in the Halle room of the festival will be provided by Maurice Nyssen. Nyssen has studied 2D animation and illustration and also has a keen interest in digital arts, mapping and VJing. Expect some atmospheric visuals especially mixed and produced for the music. Nico Bogaerts will be hosting two days of live radio broadcasts in the Heuboden room, featuring interviews and short, spontaneous live performances with and by artists performing at the festival. The shows will be broadcast on Dublab and Radio Panik. In 1992, Nico Bogaerts became part of the Moacrealsloa radio show on Radio Panik. Moacrealsloa aims to uncover unknown and undiscovered sounds beyond the usual definition of what is underground in music. The show has been host to performances and interviews with artists from the entire spectrum of avant-garde music, boasting eclecticism and and an ear for musicological detail. Nico Bogaerts empfängt in live ausgestrahlten Radiosendungen im Heuboden an zwei Tagen Künstler des Festivals zu Interviews und kurzen, spontanen Live-Darbietungen. Die Sendungen werden auf Dublab und Radio Panik ausgestrahlt. 1992 wurde Nico Bogaerts Teil der Radioshow Moacrealsloa auf Radio Panik, die zum Ziel hatte, unbekannte und unentdeckte Sounds aufzudecken, die sich jenseits der üblichen Definition von Underground-Musik in Musik befinden. Moacrealsloa hat Performances und Interviews aus dem gesamten Spektrum der Avantgarde-Musik gehostet, mit einer Handvoll Eklektizismus und einem Ohr für musikologische Details. 67

Hotel-Restaurant Sleepwood The Sleepwood hotel has an excellent restaurant. The menu features fish, meat and vegetarian dishes. They offer one menu per day. Festival kitchen in the Foodhouse In the wooden Holzhaus in the garden of Alter Schlachthof, breakfast will be served on Saturday and on Sunday from 9 AM. There will also be snacks and a bar during the day.
