STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

Raise the curtain

Opening of one of the UK’s most impressive Students’ Unions

N

ottingham Trent University today unveils its new Students’ Union building - which is expected to be one of the most impressive in the country. The development, a landmark on Shakespeare Street in Nottingham city centre, replaces the now demolished Byron House. With three storeys of social and leisure space beneath four residential blocks, it is a major investment for the university’s City site. Including the construction of the adjacent Gill Street accommodation, the development totals approximately £60 million and has created an additional 911 high quality student residences. A joint venture with University Partnerships Programme (UPP), it was designed by Nottingham-based architects Church Lukas and built by Vinci Construction UK. It follows the £90 million redevelopment of the university’s Newton and Arkwright buildings – also based at the City site – and takes Nottingham Trent University’s recent investment in its estates to £350 million. Professor Neil Gorman, Vice-Chancellor

of Nottingham Trent University, said: “During the past decade we’ve carried out a bold regeneration programme to transform our estates into the modern facilities that our students now enjoy. “Our aim was to provide facilities that would inspire students, and the design of our new Students’ Union building, following extensive consultation with our students, is no exception in that regard.

Autumn 2013 Campus Estate Management

“With the recent redevelopment of our Newton and Arkwright buildings at the City site, I now believe that Nottingham Trent University has one of the most impressive city centre campuses in the UK.” A stunning design, one of the unique features is the south facing façade of the tallest accommodation block which elevates in a variety of directions. In the Students’ Union, a 2,400-capacity night venue has been constructed which features £1 millionworth of light and sound equipment. Complete with a large stage, it will be used for live music and entertainment while doubling as a daytime bar. Added to this social mix are two large Wi-Fi lounges complete with café bars and an underground retreat for students to relax in and mingle. The leisure facilities include an impressive sports hall built to Sport England standards, a 100-station fitness suite, a dance studio and a 30ft climbing wall which rises through three floors and acts as a feature. A modern

retail unit has also been built to provide groceries. New, spacious offices and meeting rooms have been provided for Nottingham Trent Students’ Union, complete with a radio studio. Other office space houses some of the university’s students’ services. The Students’ Union has impressive green credentials and it is hoped it will achieve BREEAM excellence. As well as being connected to the district heating system, it features under-floor heating and smart windows which open and close automatically to regulate room temperature. Low energy, power-down lighting is also in operation, switching off lights automatically when no-one is in the room. And energy display monitors provide live data on the building’s power usage. Between three of the residential blocks on top of the Students’ Union are two

private roof gardens, complete with trees, lawns, plants and seating areas. Jo Southwell-Sander, president of the Nottingham Trent Students’ Union, said: “From the beginning the new building has been an exciting project. There has been student input in the research stage, right through to trying out the chairs for the lounge. Students have been able to see their ideas and thoughts really echo throughout the building. “Not only is the building in a location that truly cannot be missed, it has a wide range of facilities that students need. From the sports facilities to the advice centre, there is no doubt that this will be a lively hub for the diverse range of students we have at Nottingham Trent University. The excitement that is already circulating is fantastic and students haven’t even arrived yet.” Since construction began in February

last year, up to 3,000 labourers and tradesmen have worked on the site, 170 of which were taken out of unemployment. Stephen Jackson, chief financial and operations officer at Nottingham Trent University, said: “From the very beginning of our campus transformation programme we set our ambitions extremely high and I’m proud to say that we’ve done a good job in achieving them. “We’ve developed some of the most impressive university buildings in the country and the new Students’ Union building is without doubt among the very best, if not the best. “It gives me great pleasure to say that our work at the City site has not only been a major improvement to our premises, but also to the northern part of Nottingham city centre as a whole.” Sean O’Shea, CEO of University g

Kemper System brings new life to university campus roof

W

aterproofing specialist, Kemper System, has helped Anglia Ruskin University transform a former office block into a prestigious faculty building thanks to its Stratex warm roof and Kemperol V210 cold liquid-applied waterproofing systems. Serving 30,000 students across three campuses in Cambridge, Chelmsford and Peterborough, Anglia Ruskin University is the largest provider of nursery and midwifery training in the East of England and also runs HE courses at the University of Peterborough. The University bought ‘Guild House’ as the new home for its Faculty of Health, Social Care & Education, refurbishing the building throughout before turning its attention to the largely failing bituminous felt roof. The University’s projects team opted for a warm roof and specified Kemper’s Stratex system to upgrade the building’s thermal performance while providing a durable waterproof solution. Roofing contractor, Mells Roofing, stripped back the two failing roofs on Guild House’s East and West Buildings and cleaned the existing felt roof substrate on the South Building to prepare it for installation of the warm roof system. The installation team laid a Kempershield vapour control layer on all three roofs before beginning installation of Kemper System’s Kemper therm insulation board. Although Kemperol V210 is impervious to standing water, a tapered

insulation board was chosen to create a slight pitch on the existing flat roofs to help with water drainage and, once this had been primed, the installation team applied the Kemperol V210 liquid membrane. Laid in a single process, the V210 resin saturates a tear-resistant reinforcement fleece and cures to provide a seamless monolithic membrane that is permanently elastic, tough, UV resistant, and doesn’t require any additional protective layers. n For further information please visit www. kempersystem.co.uk

Hats off to school’s £1 million refurb A newly opened music suite and sixth form centre built at an historic county school by a leading Midlands construction firm is music to the ears of fundraisers who raised an “amazing” £1 million in less than a year to pay for the project. Adams’ Grammar School Headmaster Michael Barratt praised the teamwork of the Campaign Board – a group of willing volunteers of parents, governors, ex-pupils – in raising the funds and contractors McPhillips (Wellington) Ltd for completing the four month development on time for the start of the new school year. The construction team from McPhillips converted a disused 17th century Coach House into a much needed music centre with classrooms, four practice rooms, and an ensemble room with built-in acoustics for recording. The school’s original Performing Arts Centre was converted into the new sixth form centre with a bistro, soft seating social area, office, tutor room, learning space with tutorial rooms and a lecture theatre. A special ceremony to celebrate the opening will be held next month for donors and organisers who launched the “Our Dreams – Your Future” campaign in September 2012. A second phase of further improvements to the school is planned

in January 2014 with campaigners aiming to raise further funds for a second wing, foyer and auditorium in the Music and Performing Arts Centre. Adams’ Grammar School was founded in 1656 by local benefactor and Haberdasher William Adams and has over 800 pupils, including 100 boarders and 300 sixth formers. The school, which remains to this day closely involved with the Haberdashers’ Company made its appeal for funds a year ago. It was answered by past and present parents, former pupils, suppliers and governors with over half of the target being achieved before the campaign was even formally launched. The Shropshire construction company’s

joint Managing Director Peter McPhillips said: “We carry out a lot of construction work in schools but we are very proud to have played our part in providing such up to date facilities in one of our county’s most historic schools. My hat goes off to them for their amazing fund raising.” McPhillips are a civil engineering and building contractor based on Hortonwood in Telford and employ 250 people from the Telford area. They are currently undertaking the design and build of a new 1,100 sq m children’s nursery and after school club in Lawley, Telford, and completed landslip clearance and ground stabilisation works to re-open Jiggers Bank road near Ironbridge in July 2013. n For further information please contact marketing@adamsgs.org.uk

BIU Group raises £2 million for local air ambulance service BIU Group (BIU), one of the UK’s leading textile recycling companies, is pleased to announce it has raised 2 million pounds for the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA). HIOWAA and BIU have been working together since 2006. There are currently over 300 BIU clothing banks that have been placed in the area, where the people of Hampshire can recycle their unwanted clothing, shoes and textiles, generating vital funds for the life-saving charity. The HIOWAA helicopter, which was launched in 2007, is called out many times a day, often on life-saving missions. The service provides an efficient, prompt response to incidents throughout Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. Louise Knapton, director at BIU Group commented: “HIOWAA is a charity run solely

from donations, and relies on the generosity of the public and businesses – it costs £125,000 per month to keep the service running – so we are delighted and proud that we have been able to raise £2 million so far for the charity and are looking forward to

generating more funds in our partnership together.” BIU has now raised, in total, over £5million for its partner charities. BIU has worked closely with all the Hampshire councils, including Southampton, New Forest and Havant, on various projects to encourage recycling and help raise money for the HIOWAA, such as the massively successful ‘Bag a Bra’ Day. In Southampton, the council has also been working with Southampton Solent University and the Central Baptist church since 2007, using ‘Eco Ernie’, an adapted milk float to collect unwanted clothing from students at the end of the academic year. n For more information please visit www.biugroup.co.uk

Eric Wright delivers next phase of Catholic College project Preston-based Eric Wright Construction, a division of the Eric Wright Group, has delivered the second phase of a redevelopment project to form a combined secondary and primary school at St Mary’s Catholic College in Blackpool. In a bid to modernise the school, a phased demolition and refurbishment of the existing school has taken place, costing £22.8m, in order to accommodate a new 1,220 place secondary school and sixth form. The changes to the secondary school will give students access to new facilities including cutting edge science and computer labs, 40 contemporary classrooms and a brand new fitness suite equipped with stateof-the-art exercise machines. The new sixth form learning house, open to pupils on 4 September 2013, also offers ultra-modern facilities with the introduction of a communal area with quiet spaces for study alongside a separate learning resource centre. Designed and commissioned by Nightingale Associates, the school has been created with innovation and technology in mind. The new buildings feature light and spacious classrooms, each decorated with fun vibrant colours, providing a creative and inspirational learning environment. As part of the Blackpool Building Schools for the Future scheme, the secondary school has high hopes to raise the standard

of education across Blackpool and the Fylde Coast, boosting the area’s economic prosperity and creating opportunities for young people in the future. The final phase of the project will involve moving Christ the King Primary School and Christ the King Parish Church onto the site, work which is expected to complete in summer 2014. John Wilson, managing director of Eric Wright Construction said: “We are really proud to have successfully delivered the second phase of this project. The new facilities have added an updated, modern look to the buildings and we are sure that this redevelopment has helped to contribute

to the future regeneration of Blackpool.” Stephen Tierney, headteacher at St Mary’s Catholic College, said: “It’s been great working with Eric Wright Construction on this ongoing project. Having their professional knowledge and experience behind the project has been invaluable and the result is stunning.” “The quality of work completed has been fantastic and I am confident that the students will enjoy everything about their new learning environment. “I believe all pupils across the college will benefit from our new high-tech facilities and extra capacity, helping to enhance the levels of teaching and learning at our school.”

Reducing Education Energy Costs with Heat Pump Technology ICS Cool Energy’s heat pump division, ICS Heat Pumps, has recently supplied and installed three energy efficient inverterdriven air source units to a college in the north of England to recover and reuse air to provide heating for staff and students. The three AW i-KI MTD units are controlled via a cascade module and achieve COP (coefficient of performance) levels of 4.02. Offering various energy saving features including inverter compressors, the units provide small startup currents for sites where electrical supply is an issue, as well as weather sensors which take advantage of solar gains, and accurate ambient air temperature readings. The energy efficient heat pumps were installed within the college’s internal plant room to recover the lantern energy of the

10

return air duct of the exciting air handling unit. The units recover wasted heat which is exerted from the air handling system at a temperature of 15°C and redistributed to heat staff and students within the main building. The units are ideal for buildings which are used by personnel as they are quiet and compact; exerting a noise level of 50dB(A) at 1 metre, and therefore don’t need to be situated far from staff and students enabling personnel to work in a comfortable environment without distractions from the temperature control system. n For further information on ICS Heat Pump’s range of products and services or to find out how to improve on energy savings, please visit www.icstemp.com

New key and gadget service prevents students from losing hundreds of pounds every year As reports reveal the typical student takes as much as £2,200 worth of personal possessions to university*, a unique protection service, ufoundMyTAG.com, has launched, aiming to save students (and their parents) hundreds of pounds each year in lost items. This September, as the start of the 2013/2014 academic year commences, thousands of new students will arrive at university locations up and down the country laden with a host of portable, and costly, gadgets including Smartphones, tablets and laptops, of which 96% of students are said to now have*. The latest recovery service from ufoundMyTAG.com enables students to ‘tag’ and register each of their most valuable items with a unique identity number. The student’s personal contact information is safely stored without being displayed, but anyone finding the lost item can report it on the website at ufoundMyTAG.com or by calling the 24/7 UK-based call centre number, who will immediately identify and establish contact with the owner. It isn’t just gadgets that parents and students alike should have to worry about

safeguarding before University. Keys are one of the most common items that students lose, many of whom will be leaving home for the first time and experiencing a whole host of new responsibilities. Replacing keys is inconvenient and expensive. At Sussex University a set of replacement keys in halls of residence costs up to £70 and at Exeter the price of misplacing keys and entry fobs can be as high as £200. So far, piloting of the scheme in other areas, such as for letting agents and tenants, has resulted in 81% of tagged keys being recovered, saving the owners from forking out for unnecessary costs. Other items such as USB sticks can also be tagged to avoid students losing valuable work which they have spent hours compiling. When keys or gadgets are then reunited

with the owner, ufoundMyTAG.com provide the finder with a ‘Thank You’ gift pack as a reward. Mike George, Managing Director of MyTAG, says “Students today are experiencing the prime of the digital age; most can’t leave the house without some form of communication device. Even Universities have been encouraging such culture by enticing the best undergraduates with free gadgets. However, portable devices are easy to misplace, especially when dashing between lecture rooms, uni halls and the nearest bar. The concept is designed to give parents and students peace of mind that should something be misplaced, there is a high chance it will be returned.” n For further information please visit www.ufoundmytag.com

Rhino survives tractor test The manufacturer of the Rhino water fountain, Watership Down Technologies (WDT), has gone to extraordinary lengths to prove the antivandal properties and strength of the product. Hitched between two tractors at John Deere’s UK headquarters in Langar, Nottinghamshire, two of the Rhino’s steel glass fillers (spouts) were screwed together to form a tow bar attached via heavy duty tow ropes to a 20 ton John Deere 9460R tractor and a 12 ton, 7230R

tractor, a total of 690 horse power. The glass fillers took the huge strain exerted by the towing process as the John Deere 9460R tractor proceeded to tow its 946 R tractor along the landing strip at a nearby disused airfield. WDT managing director, Barrington Ward said: “We are convinced that the Rhino water fountain is the most durable on the market and we wanted to demonstrate this in an

eye-catching and dramatic way. “This test on the spout - usually the most vulnerable component in a water fountain unit - has laid down a challenge which I’m sure our competitors will be unable to equal,” said Mr Ward. The Rhino high duty water fountain available in two sizes and is in use in schools, hospitals, prisons, golf clubs, sporting facilities and public areas. Rhino fountains are available for both chilled water and feature vandal proof bubblers and glass fillers. Up to 40 variations of product specification are available to ensure the Rhino provides the best service possible to meet varying client requirements. A unique five year warranty against personal misuse and vandal damage is given by Watership Down Technologies for the Rhino water fountain. In the UK the Rhino is the preferred product for HM Departments of Justice, numerous Councils & London Boroughs, major international Construction & Distribution Companies and Architects specifying water fountains to schools, hospitals and prisons. n For further information, please visit http://www.watershipdowntech.com/ products/waterfountains.html

Exercising in silence Torshavn gymnasium in the Faroe Islands is a major addition to the existing municipal stadium. Its design by BBP Architects is very simple but also very flexible and transparent. Gyms are often cold, echoing and not particularly welcoming places. However, for this project, careful consideration has been given to the function and performance of the room. Instead of being cheerless, it positively encourages activities and social interaction with its warm colours, transparency, tactile materials and comfortable acoustics. To help achieve this, the architects opted to use Troldtekt acoustic panels to create a warm and friendly environment. Apart from the ceilings, they are also used on the walls, such as in the main room where a single row of panels have been spraypainted in situ. Lise Sehedsted, architect and partner at BBP also expresses her enthusiasm for the integrated Troldtekt lighting, such as in the gym which is fitted with transversal armatures while round ones have been used in the corridor and other areas.

Troldtekt acoustic panels are made from 100% natural wood fibres mixed with cement. Their benefits include high sound absorption, high durability, natural breathability, low cost life cycle performance and sustainability. The panels are widely specified throughout Europe and in the UK to improve acoustics in many potentially noisy environments, such as schools, swimming pools, sports halls, industrial environments and public

buildings. Available in various sizes and in three grades from ultrafine to coarse, the panels can be left untreated or painted in virtually any RAL colour and can be supplied complete with accessories including speakers, lighting and decoration as needed Their sustainability was recently recognised with certification at Silver level within the Cradle to Cradle concept n For further information please visit www.troldtekt.co.uk

ELGA Process Water provides the right quality for nuclear research ELGA Process Water has supplied a laboratory water system to Dalton Cumbrian Facility, the state-of-theart nuclear research complex on the Westlakes Science & Technology Park in West Cumbria. The facility forms part of the nuclear research facilities of The University of Manchester’s Dalton Nuclear Institute, and provides a suite of equipment for use by academia and industry from all over the world to collaborate in radiation science and nuclear plant decommissioning R&D. Like all laboratories, the facility requires different water qualities for different uses: ultrapure water for analytical work and lower quality for general applications like media preparation, pH buffers and glassware washing. ELGA Process Water supplied a system consisting of a PURELAB Option S7, which produces 7.5 l/h of ASTM Type II water from the mains supply. This meets the demand of the dishwasher and provides a feed to a PURELAB Classic UV which upgrades it to the

ASTM Type I quality that the laboratory needs for analytical work including ion chromatography, HPLC, GS and GS-MS. “We have visiting researchers from all over the world“, says Laboratory Manager Ruth Edge. “The PURELAB Classic UV controller is very intuitive which makes it easy to use, and that means we don’t have to waste valuable

research time showing visitors how to use it.” The system is supported by an ELGA Process Water service contract to ensure that it always meets the rigorous water quality standards. “We’re based in a rural area,” says Ruth,” but ELGA’s service team never let us down.” n Further information please visit www.algaprocesswater.co.uk

The Halifax-based company has been chosen to use its innovative new Fortis kitchen, the first of its kind in the UK, on three flagship projects including the refurbishment of 221 kitchens for at Aston University in Birmingham, a further 210, new and refurbished kitchens at the University of Essex in Colchester and 60 kitchens at Telford Court as part of the University of Hertfordshire’s redevelopment of their College Lane campus in Hatfield. The brief involved providing waterresistant kitchens without a cost premium to deal with the reoccurring problem of moisture reducing the lifespan of kitchen units. Because there was no existing product on the market, Project:ff&e created its own unique designs, which have recently been

14

recognised with the FIRA innovation award. The Fortis range works by reducing liquids getting into the joints between two pieces of worktop and also running down the front of a unit, getting into the drawers and underneath the unit where it may not be noticed. Jim Shanks, business development director, Project:ff&e, said: “We are extremely proud to have been appointed to these three major contracts and to find a practical, cost-effective solution for the brief. Through our work we are well aware that kitchens often need replacing because they have absorbed moisture. “It’s a particular issue in properties with multiple occupants such as student

accommodation and shared housing and can be an expensive problem to have, so we started working with FIRA to test our designs and we’re thrilled to receive an Innovation award for our efforts.” In addition to student accommodation, the company also provides furniture, fittings and equipment for the office, housing, healthcare and education sectors. n For further information please visit www.projectffe.com

STUDENT SAFETY

Safety first

Protecting students and staff in the event of evacuation

How well prepared are you and your institution in the event of an emergency that requires you to evacuate a building or an entire campus? Brian Page considers the services and equipment available to protect your staff and student’s lives.

A

re you responsible for the safety of the students, staff and visitors to your university campus? If you needed to evacuate your buildings in an emergency how confident are you that you would be able to get every single person out quickly and safely? Human behaviour in emergency situations differs and studies have shown that about two thirds of the time available to escape is taken up by a person’s initial reaction. Often there is a delay while people decide if the alarm is real and only act after seeing the reaction of others around them to the developing situation. It is therefore crucial that an effective emergency plan is put in place for those who may need extra help to escape. Following changes in legislation such as the Equality Act 2010 and the Fire Safety Regulatory Reform Order 2005, venues which are open to the public, no matter how big or small, are legally obliged to ensure that all members of the public, particularly those with disabilities or mobility issues, have equal access to facilities and can safely escape a property in the event of incident. University property managers also have to take responsibility for the

evacuation of everyone on their site, whether they are employees, students, visitors or members of the public and whether it is just one individual who has suffered an injury or a crowd of thousands. Jon Ellis, managing director at Ferno, which is recognised as the global leader in the manufacture and distribution of emergency patienthandling and evacuation solutions, says: “The key to making sure everyone is evacuated safely in an emergency situation is to be prepared and know exactly what needs to be done and who needs do it. It is essential that every member of staff knows how to act, where to direct people, and what equipment

training services and evacuation audits to a wide range of customers including universities, colleges, football, clubs, arenas, property owners and facility managers. Several universities across the UK have used Ferno to assess their risks and evacuation plan in the case of an emergency. Clients in the education sector include the universities of the West of Scotland; Strathclyde; York; Edge Hill; Imperial College London and Trinity College Dublin. Ferno’s Evacuation Audit is a new form of risk assessment which considers all aspects of an emergency evacuation including the management of disabled people, treating the injured, the effects of smoke, lighting and crowd control. Mr Ellis says: “Our Evacuation Audit is suitable for all public buildings and venues where members of the public congregate such as colleges and universities. In truth any building will benefit from an evacuation audit. Even those who think they have all the correct procedures in place may be surprised by what else they can do to aid a safe and speedy evacuation should an emergency situation arise. The University of Strathclyde recently teamed up Ferno, to ensure their students, staff and visitors are safe in the event of an emergency. The university, based in Glasgow, took delivery of 100 evacuation chairs from Ferno which have been manufactured to suit any stairwell and allow people who maybe injured or have mobility problems to be moved downstairs safely and easily, without requiring any heavy lifting and reduces Jon Ellis Managing Director of Ferno potential manual handling risks, is available to get everyone off the should any of the university’s sites premises safely.” need to be evacuated. equipment to Google’s headquarters in Dublin and Trinity College in the city, as well as sports stadiums around the UK including Manchester United, Arsenal and England’s National stadium Wembley Arena. Trinity College Dublin currently deploys a number of Ferno Saver Safe Evacuation Chairs across its estate as an effective solution for helping the disabled or incapacitated down flights of stairs during emergency situations or evacuations without requiring any heavy lifting. The Saver Evacuation Chair includes many systems to enhance patient comfort and safety, yet remains lightweight and compact to ensure easy storage and use. The ease of patient transfers on and off the chair means that users remain safe at all times. Mr Ellis said: “We offer a wide choice of equipment which is ideal for use by universities where there can be

18

a large number of people on the premises at any one time. We advise schools, colleges and universities on their preparations for evacuation scenarios and offer some insight on the equipment which would be most appropriate to their estate portfolio. Planning for the worst can make all the difference should an emergency situation arise.” Ferno’s evacuation equipment includes several different evacuation chairs which can be manufactured to suit any stairwell in any building a standard. The range begins with the Saver Safe Evacuation chair - a single user operation emergency evacuation chair – which ensures property owners meet the statutory obligations; the Compact 4 Track which glides up and down stairs and reduces any strain on the user; and the state-of-the-art EZ Glide® Evacuation Stair Chair which glides patient loads up to 227kg down stairs. All chairs can be folded and wall mounted for easy storage and quickly deployed in an emergency. Ferno’s evacuation equipment also includes basic trauma equipment for anyone who is injured and can’t be taken by chair ranging from carry sheets and stretchers to burns treatment and emergency foil blankets. As well as evacuation chairs Ferno provides a wide range of safety and rescue equipment including rescue and basket stretchers, transfer trolleys and immobilisations kits. And to make sure that customers can get the best out of their equipment, Ferno delivers a seamless training service to ensure the designated evacuation team can operate all its equipment safely and to their full potential. Mr Ellis says: “The training service ensures that anyone using Ferno’s products will have the right skills set to use them safely and efficiently. Training is also available

to any organisations, which under law are obliged to have a range of rescue and evacuation products on their premises. “We recently carried out a training session for the National Gallery of Scotland – similar to many we conduct with further education clients - when it took delivery of a Ferno EZ Glide. This is the first chair of its kind in the industry. It has multiple uses as a stair chair, evacuation chair or transport chair and is suitable for many different environments. “Our work with the National Gallery is a perfect example of what we can offer to our customers in terms of service delivery – not only a great product but also high quality support training to ensure they get the very best out of their investment. A particular area of expertise is our ability to ‘customise’ and ‘tailor’ courses and programmes to suit a wide range of customer and clients’ needs, which is what we did with the National Gallery.” “The EZ Glide chair will be extremely useful” said Michael Clarke, Director of the Scottish National Gallery. “The practicality and ease of use of the chair will help the Gallery aid disabled visitors as well as ensuring the safety of all visitors in the event of an accident or emergency. “We found the training programme to be invaluable. It gave us the opportunity to learn about the full potential of the chair and all its uses, meaning that we are likely to use it far more than we would have done.” Ferno’s Evacuation Audit is suitable for all venues including sports stadiums, music venues, theatres and cinemas as well as hotels, schools, universities and workplaces, large and small. As Ferno work closely with the emergency services all staff are experts in all aspects of emergency evacuation planning. n For further information about the Ferno range of services visit the website at www.ferno.co.uk

Aston University library relies on LapSafe® intelligent laptop lockers

A

ston University offers a 40 acre campus based right in the heart of Birmingham, boasting a population of 9,500 students. It offers its students worldclass teaching facilities and fantastic graduate employment prospects. During term time and exam periods, the university offers its students access to the library 24 hours a day, six days a week, and the library has a recognised award for its Customer Service Excellence. The university library found that outside of staffed hours, they were unable to offer their students use of library laptops. That is when they approached LapSafe® Products to

find the right Diplomat™ LMS solution to suit their needs. Angela Brady, Assistant Director of Library and Information Services stated: “Before purchasing the LapSafe® Diplomat™ LMS, our laptops were only available for students to borrow during staffed hours. The university library wanted to be able to enhance the offering to students during 24 hour opening, by allowing them access to the laptops even if staff were not available.” This is when the university library decided to purchase a 48 laptop bay Diplomat™ LMS to integrate with their existing library management system Millennium, to manage the laptop

loans. As Angela continues: “We were attracted to the product because of its self-service aspect, allowing the library to extend services outside of staffed hours. Our students love the product. The mechanical installation of the unit was also timely and very straightforward.” Today in the university library, around 200 laptop loans are transacted every single day. Angela said: “I would recommend the LapSafe® Diplomat™ LMS to other universities who want to maximise self service. Once the students have mastered the process of borrowing a laptop, they love the convenience of g using the self-service lockers.”

Universities enthusiasm for 24/7 device loan service Universities are constantly evolving and in recent months we have seen universities starting to look at what they can offer students over and above other universities. LapSafe® is thrilled to have been working with many universities around the country as they choose to introduce a range of self-serving charging lockers. The Diplomat™ LMS dynamic selfservice charging lockers offer students access to self-service laptop (or iPad/ Tablet) loans anytime and anywhere, allowing open access learning. Many universities have already installed the LapSafe® Diplomat™ LMS in their libraries and by linking into their Library Management System, devices are loaned similar to books. This allows librarians to track and monitor equipment usage and save resources, whilst providing students with greater freedom and an improved user experience. What’s more,

22

students take ownership of the loaned device which leads to reduced damage and loss of equipment. LapSafe® Products are proud to have partnered with D-Tech International Ltd to provide the integration between the Library Management Systems using SIP2. Students can identify themselves at a 19” touchscreen by using either RFID, barcode, magnetic stripe or biometrics. The charging lockers can also be configured to allow data transfer, which can save ICT Technician’s time when making updates to the devices and an unlimited number of lockers can be deployed. Where a university is supporting a BYOD (Bring You Own Device) scheme, LapSafe® also have a range of storage and charging lockers to accommodate students own personal devices. Students can loan an empty locker for a limited period of time allowing them to securely charge their devices whilst not in use. Mark Exley, Business Development Director at LapSafe® said, “We are

Autumn 2013 Campus Estate Management

seeing more and more university libraries opening 24 hours a day which makes the Diplomat™ LMS self-service loan lockers ideal, Aston University is a prime example of this”. LapSafe® Products the pioneer of the UK’s first ever laptop storage and charging trolley, has been providing the education sector with safe, secure and value for money solutions to manage mobile ICT for more than a decade. LapSafe® Products manufacture the most extensive range of charging products on the market and can provide quality solutions to meet every need and budget. Every solution exceeds British safety standards and is independently CE Certified and built to last. LapSafe® are proud to support British manufacturing by continually manufacturing their products in the UK. n For more information of where you will be able to download case studies from other universities already successfully using the Diplomat™ LMS range. please visit our dedicated website diplomatlockers.com

CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT

It’s good to talk What your campus development says about your university

P

lanning a new campus is an exciting time for any university. It says a lot about a university’s commitment to its future and its investment in the facilities that it will need to achieve its full potential for decades to come. But planning a new campus also says something else. It tells a wide range of people about the style and nature of your organisation as it embarks on such a major project. It tells students and staff how inclusive it is by involving them from an early stage to determine how their university will look in the future. And just as

24

importantly it tells a local people how the university is as a neighbour. Is it open, engaging, listening and inclusive? In short, is their local university a good neighbour? This is important for many reasons. From a formal planning point of view you have to demonstrate that you have actively engaged with your local community. Your students and staff are one community. But your neighbours are just as important. When your planning application is finally submitted, after many years and months of hard work, one element upon which you will be judged is the

Autumn 2013 Campus Estate Management

extent to which you have gone out of your way to hear the views of local people and responded to their issues, concerns and ideas. Your Statement of Community Involvement, which will form part of your planning application, will need to show a professionally planned community engagement programme, agreed at an early stage of the project and delivered over the many months when the project is developing into a firm proposal to submit to the planning authority. Failure to demonstrate appropriate community engagement can count against a planning

application when officers are writing their report and councillors are making their decision. And in a less formal way community engagement from an early stage has great benefits for the success of your new campus proposal. The active input from a range of people from outside your professional team who have a genuine interest in the development sometimes throws up some interesting ideas. But more importantly they challenge your professional team, pushing them to explain their thinking and justify their ideas. And this all adds to the creative momentum that shapes the final design. There is another benefit of running a professional community engagement programme right from the start. It helps you get over the difficult bits. If you start to develop positive relationships with key people in your local community, involving them at an early

stage in your project, listening to their views, taking on board their issues, then you create a positive atmosphere of trust which is a valuable asset when problems arise. You can discuss things calmly with them. They are prepared to trust you, more than they would if there is a “them and us relationship. On major projects we like to establish early on a local community forum as a way of developing this relationship. We bring together community leaders including councillors, chairmen and women of residents associations, local vicars, police and head teachers, indeed, anyone who has a genuine claim to represent a local community or a key role in that community. The forum meets regularly to allow the developer to update them on progress, answer their questions and discuss specific topics that they themselves have chosen in advance. It is very much the community’s forum. And over time

relationships develop, barriers break down, and an atmosphere of trust arises. And when something difficult comes up you can take it to them in a calm and considered way to discuss it and see how to resolve it. The community forums, and a wide range of other communication and engagement measures, are ways of involving local people. The important thing is to use these communication channels, not just to tell people what is going on, but also to engender a sense of pride in what is planned. Universities as developers are not the same as most other developers. You are not building houses to sell, make a profit and move on. You are building your future and enhancing an asset of which everyone should be proud. Local people should relish the fact that their local university is prospering and growing. They should want to be part of it and take pleasure in watching the continuing success of a cherished local institution. There is no question that if you can develop from the start that feeling of local pride amongst the local people who count as decision makers and opinion formers, then they will support you during the difficulties that inevitably arise when details are considered. But as well as being legally necessary and practically helpful, good and early community engagement on campus development projects has a wider benefit to a university. It says something about the nature and spirit of the university. All universities need to work with their local communities, local authorities and local opinion formers. Problems with students in the community, problems over parking and public transport and a whole range of issues are easier to deal with if you have developed trusting relationships. The way in which you manage a campus development will play a major role in establishing this. So what do you need to do? Well, g start early is the first tip. Plan your

Campus Estate Management Autumn 2013 25

communications and engagement programme right from the start and integrate it into your professional team’s timetable. Then identify your different audiences, both internal and external and prioritise them so you focus your efforts and resources in the most effective ways. Now you have to determine your messages. What is the main thing you want to say about your development? What are your three key messages? Because if you get these right at the start, then as your team grows larger everyone will be saying the same thing and a clear, consistent message gets across. And now, how to you deliver those messages? What supporting materials do you need? What web presence? What media are important, both locally and maybe nationally or even internationally? But then there is the most important thing. How do you actively engage people rather than just speaking at them? How do you get people to

26

become involved and start playing a positive role in the development of the project? Community forums, public exhibitions, group presentations, focus groups. All these are part of the mix. Communicating effectively, engaging actively and building relationships that can be maintained over many months and years are vital to get a positive Paul Barnes is Public Affairs Director of Communications Management, a communications and engagement agency that specialises in supporting the education sector. outcome to your planning application and to smooth the way during construction. But just as importantly they say something positive about your university that can ensure that you are perceived as a valued asset in the local community. And that can’t be bad. n For further information please visit www.communicationsmanagement.co.uk Crown Estate, Westminster Property Owners Association, Boots Property and the National Trust. Balfour Beatty WorkPlace provides the link to CCTV upgrade at the University of London Samsung Techwin DVRs are at the heart of new CCTV systems installed by Link CCTV Systems at eight University of London Halls of Residence buildings.

T

he University of London is one of the oldest, largest and most diverse universities in the UK. Established by Royal Charter in 1836, the University is recognised globally as a world leader in Higher Education. It consists of 18 self-governing Colleges of outstanding reputation, together with a range of prestigious Central Academic Bodies

and Activities. The new CCTV systems provide fixed static camera monitoring of all points of entry/exit and security reception areas, with the captured high resolution images recorded in real time and stored at full frame rate for 31 days on Samsung SRD-1670DC Digital Video Recorders (DVRs). The CCTV project was driven by

Autumn 2013 Campus Estate Management

on-site TFM provider, Balfour Beatty WorkPlace (BBW) which manages 31 buildings for the University, including the eight Halls of Residence buildings and a large external precinct in the Bloomsbury area, which provides access routes to several Colleges within the area, including SOAS and Birkbeck. Balfour Beatty WorkPlace provides total facilities management

services to sites across the University of London’s entire estate. Its dedicated team, working with the University’s FM team, delivers a full range of services, including mechanical and electrical maintenance, grounds, security, reception, post and cleaning. Of the 31 buildings that BBW manage, 14 buildings and the external precinct area were already covered by existing CCTV systems. With the safety and security of its students, visitors and guests being of prime importance, the University took the decision to embark on an improvement plan that would address any shortcomings in the existing systems and to introduce timesaving efficiencies. BBW, under instruction from the University, put this improvement work out to tender and independent CCTV technology specialists Link CCTV Systems won the contract to project manage the operation, from survey and design through to installation and maintenance.

Link CCTV Systems’ brief was to increase CCTV coverage by providing fixed detailed views of all points of entry/exit and security reception areas and to improve the quality of the live and recorded images. At the same time, the company was tasked to improve the safety and security to the Halls of Residence buildings by way of enabling building management and security staff to remotely view high quality live and recorded CCTV images and as such, remove the need to visit each site to review footage of any incidents. Link CCTV Systems were also awarded the contract to project manage the relocation of the University of London’s CCTV control room from Senate House in Malet Street to Stewart House in Russell Square. The existing control room was due for refurbishment and this provided an opportunity to invest for the future and upgrade the CCTV system and associated equipment, enabling the

University to have a platform for growth whilst ensuring the needs of all stakeholders and students were met. Link CCTV Systems designed operators’ workstations and a supervisor’s desk for the new location in Stewart House, as well as deploying a new CCTV control room monitor display. The company also migrated all the existing CCTV cameras to the new control room. Once again, Samsung Techwin high performance ‘real time’ digital recording equipment played a key role in the solution by providing real time recorded images for all precinct and local building cameras. The SRD-1670DC is able to simultaneously record in real time high quality 4CIF images across all of its 16 channels. It has the capacity for five SATA HDDs, offering the potential for a massive 10TB of on-board storage and utilises H.264 compression to minimise bandwidth requirements whilst maintaining high image quality. It can

also if required record audio across all channels and has USB ports for easy export of video. Utilising an existing high performance site-wide LAN, the live and recorded images are available for the University of London Building Management teams and Balfour Beatty WorkPlace security team, by using Samsung’s Net-i Ware or SmartViewer software. By simply clicking on one of the multiple layered maps, relevant camera images can be displayed on the monitor wall or local operator’s console. The existing control room was very small, enclosed and ineffective compared to the well designed new facility which is light, airy and spacious, and provides a platform for growth and the potential to move forward to 24 hour surveillance. During the relocation Link CCTV supplied and installed more than 90 cameras in Senate House, Stewart House and the precinct areas, and in the process diverted approximately 400m of cabling while encountering
