elcome to the April issue of In Security and with the summer finally beginning to show signs of life, our thoughts move to IFSEC 2017 and Facilities 2017. This issue’s Product & Industry News section (starting on page 8) showcases the latest news from the industry. Our cover story this month examines how access control is still evolving and that swapping mechanical for electronic locks gives security managers more control, of course and it also saves money (see page 2). Next, Dallmeier explores how futureoriented system for monitoring public spaces can be achieved with fewer cameras not more (see page 20)! Later, manned security businesses are increasingly looking for clever ways of

02

planning and managing static and mobile guards according to Paul Ridden, CEO of SmartTask (see page 24). If you thought IFSEC was just wall to wall CCTV, think again, IFSEC is launching several new features and revamping some existing favourites for its 2017 edition (see page 28). Cyber security is simply more areas of consideration for the security manager, but just because it is happening down cables and in computer systems, it is still a case of controlling access and protecting assets (see page 32). The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) – partner to IFSEC International – is looking forward to 2017’s event, which is set to be another impressive show (see page 36). cover story

Time to forget about keys? Wireless access control makes it easy to extend an existing security system... or begin a new one

A

ccess control is still evolving. Swapping mechanical for electronic locks gives security managers more control, of course. It also saves money. We all know how quickly mechanical key management eats up budget. Every lost key costs time and money; stolen or copied keys are a constant risk. RFIDpowered smart cards eliminate these security and admin headaches. And with software-powered access control, user access rights can be changed in real time, and audit trails generated whenever needed. In short, electronic access control is a security upgrade. But you can also upgrade this upgrade, by beginning a switch to wireless access control — as organizations across Europe are discovering. What’s the key advantage of wireless? Cost-efficiency, plus easy installation and upgrading of an existing system, are often mentioned. It’s easy to extend existing access control by switching any remaining mechanical cylinders for battery-powered, wireless Aperio® cylinders, for example. You can bring them into the existing control panel via communications hubs (online integration) or via update-on-card (offline), while staff and visitors keep the same smart cards they already use.

Compare that to the expensive rewiring — not to mention high energy use and running costs — to add more wired magnetic locks. Integration of wireless lock technologies like Aperio® with CCTV, alarm, HVAC and other building management systems is another major benefit. “Wireless locks are often specially designed for integration with other systems. The integration capabilities and ease of use can be a significant benefit,” writes Blake Kozak, principal analyst at IHS Research, in a recent ASSA ABLOY publication.

Open standards mean easy integration Easy third-party integration is a major Aperio® advantage. The ASSA ABLOY Device Protocol has a simple SDK to integrate Aperio® into access control ecosystems just like any other component. Currently almost 100 major OEMs have integrated Aperio® wireless access control, including Axis, Nedap, Tyco, ACS, Gallagher, Lenel, Genetec, TDSi, InnerRange and many more. Because Aperio® is built on open architecture, integration with these third-party systems is seamless. Administrators continue to operate their access control system from a single, easy-to-use interface

which controls any installed wired locks alongside Aperio® batterypowered locks. On a day-to-day basis, the customer only sees one system — with the OEM brand. Online Aperio® integration is supported by a Wiegand interface that relays information from a single door; the RS485 hub to connect up to 8 locks; and an IP hub for up to 16 doors which communicates via encrypted TCP/IP connection. Aperio® devices are also compatible with the OSS Standard Offline Access Application for batterypowered locks, the leading industry standard for offline access control.

Aperio®: trusted already in many sectors In health care environments, Aperio® ensures only authorized staff can access controlled medicines or expensive equipment. It is the access control backbone at Ghent’s Hospital Maria Middelares: doors in a new building run Aperio® Offline locks connected to Nedap’s AEOS security system. The unified system, controlled from the AEOS interface, delivers much lower maintenance and admin costs. “This way AEOS gives the hospital the flexibility they need to keep control of access and the flow of people,” says Peter Rommens, Sales Manager at Nedap Belgium. As part of a £35 million refurbishment, Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool, England, partnered with ASSA ABLOY, Grantfen and Inner Range to deliver a unified platform, extending an Integriti access system with Aperio® wireless escutcheons. In higher education settings, libraries, labs and private offices need protection, and access control must be adaptable to an ever-changing roster of users. With Aperio® wireless locks, staff and students can use a single RFID smart card for room access, printing services and making payments. “The installation of Aperio® has proven hugely popular,” says Alan Donnachie, Deputy Director of Estates and Facilities at Surrey University. Aperio® is also a popular choice for student halls of residence, both g

new-builds and retrofits. University of East Anglia extended an existing Gallagher system with Aperio® Online escutcheons. Around 740 Aperio® devices are fitted at Aberdeen University’s Hillhead Student Village and over 1,400 students at Birmingham’s Vale Village use Aperio® technology. International corporations can run a single Aperio®-powered installation across all premises, no matter how far apart. Cost savings in large premises are significant, because Aperio® locks are powered by standard batteries and only “wake up” to interact with a credential. They are not connected to the mains, and use no power when inactive. One wireless lock uses approximately 0.001 kWh of energy per year, versus 55.2 kWh for a standard wired lock and reader. In carbon terms, an Aperio® lock emits 0.16 percent of the emissions from a standard wired lock. Aperio® has proven credentials at venues with heavy footfall, including Stavanger Concert Hall and Rotterdam’s Ahoy Arena; and in complex industrial settings, such as Reshafim’s manufacturing site in Israel.

Wireless devices for many applications Cylinders, escutcheons, complete locks, the new Aperio® H100 door handle and the KS100 server rack lock — as well as both Online and Offline capability — can be deployed together in the same system, depending on the integration. Aperio® can protect exterior and interior doors, from fire and safety doors to meeting rooms, labs and offices, and is compatible with Euro, French, Finnish, Scandinavian and Swiss door profiles. Customers benefit from a uniformly quick, straightforward, wireless installation process for all Aperio® components, alongside comprehensive product support from ASSA ABLOY specialists. Users also benefit. Remote unlocking commands pass from system to door almost instantly. Site users can open both wired doors and Aperio® wireless controlled doors with the same smart card, via standard RFID technologies like iCLASS®, MIFARE®, DESFire®.

Comelit’s integrated access solution selected by Berkeley Homes Welwyn Garden City, UK, 13th March 2017 Comelit’s IP (ViP) video door entry and access control solution has been used to secure apartments and townhouses at an exclusive gated mews development in Twickenham, built by nationwide property developer, St James. Brewery Wharf, situated on a tributary of the Thames in south-west London, features 82 warehouse-style flats spread across three blocks and 28 gated houses built in a Georgian style. St James, a member of The Berkeley Group, opted to secure the upmarket riverside development using Comelit’s award-winning 3one6 Sense digital entrance panels, which feature a built-in colour camera. The panels have been installed at all the entrances around the complex and are connected over a dedicated Cat6 network. The 3one6 Sense combines cutting-edge technology and design in a single product and was a “Red Dot Design Winner” when it was launched. Calls are made using buttons that are integrated into the panel. What makes the Sense unusual is that it has no mechanical keys, but uses capacitive technology instead. This external panel, which has an IK08 rating, offers protection against vandalism while maintaining a prestigious, high-quality appearance. Sound quality is optimised with echo-cancelling and the panel display, visual indications (pictograms) and keys with Braille characters all comply with the Equality Act. Wide-ranging multi-channel solution from a unified platform The Brewery Wharf project uses a broad range of products from Comelit’s IP (ViP) door entry range. The security installation company, Editquest, has integrated the SimpleKey access control solution into the entrance panels to give residents easy access and reduce the need for additional control

equipment mounted on the wall. The panels are fitted with13.56MHz proximity readers, which are activated by residents or approved third parties, using MIFARE key fobs. The Brewery Wharf complex includes several vehicle barriers and car owners are issued with additional fobs that allow longer-range communication to activate 868MHz radio transmitters for opening the security gates. All this has been achieved within the ViP system, demonstrating Comelit’s ability to supply a wideranging and advanced integrated access control solution on a single unified platform. Residents in the apartments at Brewery Wharf can speak with visitors at ground level using Comelit’s Smart monitors, which feature a full duplex handsfree loudspeaker and a 3.5-inch LCD display. The units can be flush, surface or desk-mounted and the sleek design and white finish contribute to the overall minimalist interior architectural scheme. Communication is further optimised with residents and building managers benefiting from a desktop audio-video porter switchboard within the ViP suite. The switchboard allows the concierge to send messages to the monitors in all apartments or just to specific groups of residents. A good example of how the system can be used is notifying residents that the lift serving their part of the development is out of order. Group notifications and messaging of this kind help residents and appeal to developers. Centralised switchgear Editquest used Comelit’s six-port PoE switches on a Cat6 cabling structure. The switches achieve exceptional transmission distances of up to 250 metres between connection points. This saves costs for the developer and – just as crucially on a project of this kind – makes efficient use of space since the switchgear for multiple apartments is centralised. Net2 provides improved security with simple token management for cape town residential developments Blok Developments is an urban property developer operating in Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard and CBD. Their thoughtfully designed and detail orientated apartments are built to make a lasting contribution to the neighbourhoods they develop in. Requirement Security is a priority for Blok and their residents. They required a system that would allow them to control who could access the developments, and had the functionality to easily assign, update and bar access tokens, from a simple, reliable user interface. Blok also needed their residents to have the option to visually identify visitors via video intercom. Solid Systems, a Managed IT Service Provider based in Cape Town, were approached by Blok to install a security solution that met their requirements, on their four new developments. Solution Solid Systems recommended Net2, Paxton’s flagship access control system, to control the access on site. They also included a Net2 Entry monitor, Paxton’s intuitive, colour touchscreen internal monitor, in every property for visual authentication and a direct line of communication to the security desk. Net2 is a user friendly and flexible networked access control system, designed to make the management of any site straightforward. Net2, combined with Paxton’s innovative plug-and-play door entry solution, Net2 Entry, has provided Blok Developments and their

residents with a simple security system that is managed remotely by Solid Systems. Solid Systems will manage and maintain the system on behalf of Blok, programming access control tokens and monitoring the system remotely. Michael Claxton, Managing Director at Solid Systems says: “Our industry leading Network Management solution pro-actively detects issues within the Blok ICT environment, automation then attempts to resolve the issue automatically and if unsuccessful, a certified IT professional is notified and assigned the issue for a speedy resolution.” In place of traditional locks and keys, the residents now use tokens to access the site. If a token is lost, it can easily be barred from the Net2 system. New tokens can be added, and access permissions can be updated with ease. The use of individual tokens also provides Blok’s security personnel with a full audit log of who has entered and exited the developments, further enforcing the level of security they offer their residents. Secure penthouse access from the lift is another benefit of the Net2 system. The penthouse residents present their token upon entering the lift, which will then take them directly into their property. Result Blok Developments are pleased with their new Net2 system, and the service Solid Systems provide. Solid Systems will work with Blok on all future developments, to support plans to incorporate Net2 access control in their upcoming properties n

Bosch launches Video Management System 7.5, further enhancing forensic capabilities and openness in video surveillance Bosch has released its Video Management System 7.5 software (BVMS 7.5), which will empower security operators to faster and more efficiently review video footage while increasing its openness for storage. Security operators are often challenged to quickly and efficiently review and collect video footage for incidents. With BVMS 7.5 playback performance is improved when operators are browsing through recorded video at high speed by skipping the rendering of frames, which are not visible to the human eye. Additionally, BVMS 7.5 includes forensic search as a standard free-of-charge functionality, allowing operators to scan through huge recording databases for a specific event within seconds. The rules for the search are easily defined via a graphical user interface and can be changed even after an event.

BVMS 7.5 has also further increased the openness of its system to allow for easy integration of third-party software and devices. Following the announcement of Bosch’s collaboration with Sony, BVMS 7.5 is now compatible with the latest generation of Sony cameras and storage devices from third parties can be more easily connected. Furthermore, the OPC (Open Platform Communications) server has been expanded making it easier for Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) Systems to control the BVMS. Finally, communication between the Operator Client and other system components can be exchanged through a single, secure and open channel, making it easier for system integrators to configure the system for remote secure access, using standard internet connections. www.boschsecurity.com n

Surveillance

Less is more Fewer cameras can still mean greater security! – Dallmeier realises future-oriented system for monitoring public spaces

As feelings of uncertainty are on the rise among the populace, demands to expand video surveillance installations and increase the number of cameras in public spaces are growing louder, and are being voiced by representatives of all political affiliations. But would more cameras or higher resolution cameras really offer more security? Regensburg-based manufacturer Dallmeier, one of the world’s leading providers of network-based video security systems, says no. And presents a viable alternative with its video solution for the city of Cologne.

Status quo of public surveillance Until now, it seemed that the only logical way to successfully guarantee full coverage of large open spaces with visibility challenges was to set up large systems consisting of as many cameras as possible. Unfortunately, in most cases it was found that such an approach can be prohibitively expensive. At the same time, it was often simply not technically possible to create satisfactory solutions. “This was why in the past at least

30-40% of such projects were not even attempted”, says Dieter Dallmeier, founder and CEO of the German video manufacturer Dallmeier – a leading name in the industry worldwide for over 30 years now.

Panomera® – A completely novel approach The extraordinary technical capabilities of the Panomera® technology and its supporting system components initiate a ground-breaking shift in crime prevention. The multifocal sensor system Panomera® was specially developed for the allencompassing video surveillance of expansive areas. With Panomera®, huge widths, as well as areas with large distances can be displayed with a completely new resolution quality, in real time and at high frame rates of up to 30 fps. With Panomera®, a huge area can be surveyed from a single location, and depending on the requirements of observation assignments, the resolution can be scaled nearly limitlessly. Hence, one Panomera®, equipped with eight sensors, is fully sufficient to replace 35 standard megapixel cameras.

Operation site: Cologne The events of New Year’s Eve 2015 in Cologne are seared into the memories of the entire population of the city. In the wake of countless incidents, including numerous cases of sexual harassment of women, Police recognised the need to revise their existing security concept, particularly with regard to securing large public spaces. A high number of criminal offences had been committed around Cologne Cathedral, and therefore this areas if the inner city was selected as the basis for planning new security measures. Their main focus was on how the situational overview for police and therefore the delegation of police and other emergency personnel could be improved through the use of video systems, especially in case of large gatherings. Even in those early stages of planning, the responsible officials encountered a massive problem: with the use of conventional video technology it would not have been possible to fully capture the required 8.800 m2 monitoring area. Additionally, there was no camera technology available which would have provided the resolution or pixel density required across the g

IN Security I April 2017 I 21

whole area for use in police investigations. Lastly, officials also realised that a conventional camera system with numerous individual cameras would have resulted in a flood of data and images, which would significantly hamper a proactive monitoring and quick reactions by the officers working in the control room.

Less is more – the Dallmeier solution Renowned video expert Dallmeier and its project experts were called upon to devise a feasible solution. After a short induction, they were able to design a system which would not only fulfil, but in fact exceed, the requirements. Therefore, the project was awarded to the Regensburg-based manufacturer, and installation

work for the Panomera® system began in mid-December 2016. Instead of a system with numerous spread out cameras, which would have meant a complicated set-up as well as high infrastructure and maintenance costs, Dallmeier deployed a system that covers the entire monitoring area, yet remains discreet. The Panomera® solution required only two installation points. Hence, setting up the system was easy and the city will benefit significantly financially from much lower infrastructure and maintenance costs compared to the original planning.

Active monitoring vs. passive surveillance Instead of simply having to assume that a large number of installed surveillance cameras

About Dallmeier Dallmeier has at its disposal more than 30 years of experience in transmission, recording as well as picture processing technology and is an outstanding pioneer of CCTV/IP solutions worldwide. This profound knowledge is used in the development of intelligent software and high quality recorder and camera technologies enabling Dallmeier to not only offer stand-alone systems, but complete network solutions up to large-scale projects with perfectly integrated components. Right from the beginning the company always focused on own innovative developments and highest quality and reliability. Dallmeier is the only manufacturer in Germany that develops and manufactures all components on its own. This includes the entire product range, from cameras to picture storage and transmission to intelligent video analysis and

would somehow bring about a significant reduction in criminality, police in Cologne are able to switch from ineffective passive surveillance to active video monitoring. Potentially dangerous situations are detected even before they threaten to become incidents in a police statistics report. Fast response forces are alerted rapidly and guided to the site of interest. Meanwhile, a range of technical measures ensure that the data recorded can satisfy any given data protection requirements. And if a criminal offense is committed “under the noses” of the police, Panomera® supplies conclusive information which can be used as evidence in a court of law and as the basis for criminal investigations.

even individually adjusted management systems. Quality made by Dallmeier, made in Germany! Over the years, Dallmeier has repeatedly given fresh impetus to the market with new developments and extraordinary innovations. The world’s first DVR for example, which introduced digital recording to the entire CCTV industry, came from Dallmeier. The introduction of the patented multifocal sensor system Panomera® has had a similarly ground breaking effect, ushering in a new era for the industry. This unique camera technology is revolutionising the market and opening up completely new possibilities for securing assets, optimising business operations and ensuring public safety. This and the extensive experience in the CCTV and IP field have led to a top position in the international market for digital video surveillance systems. n

Manned Guardin

On-Guard How Workforce Management Innovation is boosting operational control and service delivery

M

anned security businesses are increasingly looking for clever ways of planning and managing static and mobile guards according to Paul Ridden, CEO of SmartTask. Speaking exclusively to InSecurity, he says there had been growing demand for employee scheduling, patrol monitoring and workforce management tools in the past 18 months as companies attempt to gain competitive advantage by improving service delivery and operational control. “The technology has become increasingly available and affordable over the last couple of years, making it relevant and appealing to more and more manned security operators,” Ridden explains. “Advances in smartphone technology and the introduction cloud-based software solutions have made these solutions easily deployable and scalable, whatever the size of a business or its budget.” SmartTask itself experienced record uptake of its employee scheduling and workforce management system during 2016, which resulted in the number of active users doubling to more than 10,000. It is the usability, flexibility and functionality of the SmartTask solution that makes it an ideal system for the security sector claims Ridden:

“delivering an integrated tool across intelligent rostering, live monitoring and integrated proof of attendance in a simple and hassle-free way.” SmartTask also introduced a number of industry firsts to take advantage of the latest smartphone innovations and better meet changing market needs. In particular, the software solution became the first patrol monitoring and guard management tool to integrate with FLIR® thermal imaging, so manned and mobile security providers can offer an enhanced service to customers and keep security officers safe against hidden threats and potential risks. Meanwhile, SmartTask teamed up with management systems and security consultants Pengelly Young to enable security businesses to meet the ongoing requirements of the SIA Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS) and ISO9001. A dedicated Smart Docs module has been launched to help achieve compliance requirements and provide visibility of latest operating procedures by ensuring appropriate documents and processes are put in place and correctly managed. Moving forward, Ridden sees the migration from on premise software to solutions hosted in the cloud gather pace as the levels of

available functionality matures to match, and in many cases, exceed that of legacy systems. “Not only is this exciting change in the way software is purchased driving innovation and reducing costs, but it is also enabling organisations like SmartTask to take the best from these emerging technologies and use them to deliver clear business differentiation and efficiencies.” He also sees innovations in the consumer marketplace starting to impact on employee scheduling and workforce management processes over the coming months and years. In the same way as the widespread adoption of smartphones has helped enhance staff communications and operational performance monitoring, these emerging technologies will offer a host of opportunities to take advantage of. “Smart voice assistants, driven by increasing competition between Google Home and Amazon Echo, should provide an effective means of improving and simplifying employee engagement in a very personal way. Meanwhile, artificial intelligence (AI) may lead to many software solutions becoming smarter and less dependent on local knowledge, intelligently learning as they go along and relying less on human intervention,” suggests Ridden. g

SUPPORTING GROWTH AND DELIVERING BEST PRACTICE Oakpark Security Systems, an independent security business across East Anglia, London, and the South East of England, has expanded its use of SmartTask having achieved a host of business and operational benefits. The company has adopted the custom reporting package having successfully rolled out SmartTask’s advanced proof of attendance and incident notification solution across its mobile response and manned guarding teams. SmartTask has already reduced administration by between 15 and 20 hours a month, with further savings expected with the adoption of the latest functionality. Meanwhile, the system has helped Oakpark to win at least two security contracts and is supporting ongoing customer retention by delivering higher levels of service. This investment in leading technology solutions is also making a key contribution to its top two per cent SIA Approved Contractor Scheme rating. Oakpark is now using SmartTask’s custom smartforms to replace existing paper-based processes to streamline certain areas of the business and reduce administration. In particular, vacant property inspections and supervisor visits will now use SmartTask-enabled tablets to electronically-capture information for assessments and evaluations, which are then uploaded to an online portal for viewing and analysis. Professor Brian Cox OBE!

OK, so not exactly a ‘feature’ or representative of a ‘revamp’, but we believe that securing Professor Brian Cox OBE as one of 2017’s keynotes is a major coup. The eminent physicist, presenter of the BBC’s The Wonders Of… series and prolific scientific writer topped a recent poll of preferred keynote speakers among the P&M audience by a wide margin. Challenging any perception of physicists as socially awkward, badly dressed nerds, he was, somewhat incongruously, also a keyboard player for bands D:Ream and Dare in the 1990s and has become something of a pin-up. We’re also pretty chuffed that Dame Kelly Holmes and Simon Weston CBE have agreed to speak. Click here to find out more.

3

The Drone Zone

Officially launched at IFSEC 2016, the Drone Zone will return to ExCeL London bigger, better and now more appropriately housed, centre stage, within Borders & Infrastructure Expo. Whether you want to find out how drones can aid security at sports events, in counter terror or in traffic monitoring, protect your organisation against drones, or simply want to see this incredible technology in action, the Drone Zone will provide some compelling aerial theatre in the heart of IFSEC. You’ll have the chance to speak to experts from leading drone manufacturers and, of course, see them in action, flying above your head within ExCel London.

4

The Free Meeting Service

To ensure IFSEC International cements its place as the best place to do business for the international security industry – and is not seen as just another trade show – we’ve revamped our 1 to 1 meeting service. Acting as matchmaker, we can get you face time with exhibitors who can help you secure the best, most cost-effective products and solutions. Use our meetings service to pre-book your meetings ahead of your visit – a vast improvement on the traditional exhibition format, where you’re left hovering, frustrated, for the crowds to clear on an exhibitor’s stand. Installer World Not forgetting the thousands of installers, integrators and engineers who return to IFSEC year after year, in 2017 we’re dedicating a specific area of the show to these loyal visitors. Installer World will bring together manufacturers and distributors, the Tool Zone, workwear, the Engineers of Tomorrow competition, recruitment consultants and a

networking bar – all in one place. This year we welcome Anglia Tools as our exclusive partner for the Tool Zone and visitors will be able to sample a wide range of hand and power tools and take advantage of some highly attractive IFSEC offers. Also we welcome VanTainer and their range of van racking and storage systems which are perfectly suited to the rigours and demands of today’s installers and integrators. Offering our most longstanding audience more reasons to visit than ever before and expanding our appeal to the rest of the industry, IFSEC 2017 is set to be our best, most ambitious show yet. Whether you’re an installer, integrator, head of security, consultant or work in government or law enforcement, make sure you don’t miss out on Europe’s largest security exhibition. Debunking Cyber Security

O

ver the last few years companies have started to realise that cyber security is a loss prevention issue, and whilst it is a board level issue, it is frequently delegated to the security manager for day to day responsibility. They in turn will often then be reliant on IT professionals to provide the technical expertise. For many security managers brought up on walls, fences and gates, cyber security can appear to be a black art. Using comparisons to physical security, I would like to help them understand many of the common issues. The first thing to understand is that an internet connection may be one cable, but being connected to the internet creates multiple possible ways for your internal computer system to be attacked. If we think of the computer system as being like a building, the internet connection is the public roadway leading up to the building. The entry point to your computer system normally consists of a router which sends the communications entering in various directions depending on the type of data, to separate out the communication streams there are literally hundreds of gateways known as ports. The obvious

ports are the ones used for email, but there is a port used for time synchronisation, ports used for various methods of transferring files, instant messenger clients, and the list goes on. Not every system will use every single one of the ports, some are quite specialist and only used by a limited number of systems. Anyway back to our “building, so we have the roadway leading up to it which then splits with individual paths leading to various entry points: the mail goes to one doorway, parcels get sent to another doorway, people wishing to buy from you go to the trade counter entrance, there is a window through which you can look out at the nearby clock tower, there is a pipe where water flows into the building, another pipe for sewage coming out of the building, and any number of other entrance and exit routes. So how do we protect our system? In the same way as we protect our buildings! Examine each and every route in, decide whether it is required, if it is not used the preference is to block it off, if it is used then put in place a method of monitoring what is coming through. With our access point for mail, we want to make sure that it

is only being used by genuine mail deliveries, further to that we may want to look at each item of mail and filter out the junk mail which wastes people’s time and look for anything malicious and nasty sent with the intention of doing harm. It may be that there is a gateway into your building that was used at one time, but now is no longer required and can be closed off. We should also consider the level of protection that you have at the entry points, at home you probably have a basic router supplied by your internet provider, in the same way as the locks on your doors are probably what was originally fitted with the door. You might have installed window locks or decided that the supplied catches are sufficient. Now consider your place of work, the locks on doors, gateways, etc. are proportionate to the contents of the building. If the building contains lots of high value, portable items, you will hopefully have multiple high quality locking devices on all potential access points, with multiple layers of security. Your IT access needs to be the same, somebody might manage to pick or force one lock, but hopefully you will detect them before they get through the next doorway. g

IN Security I April 2017 I 33

It is also important to make sure that all access points are secured, even if at first glance they are not an obvious way in. Cyber attackers will often use one method to get in undetected, and then once inside they can then create other openings. In physical terms this is like sending a small robot up the waste pipe, which once inside can creep about and unlock larger doorways from the inside. Likewise mail attachments and links to some websites can be another method of unwittingly introducing some software into the system, which could then communicate with the outside world and open other doorways from the inside. Another consideration is how remote workers communicate with the central system. More professional IT networks allow home workers to link direct into the main network using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) which creates an encrypted pathway allowing for such things as secure transfer of files between the main network and the remote worker, indeed these pathways are referred to as tunnels, which leads to a suitable analogy of if you had a tunnel from your building to an employee’s home,

34 I April 2017 I IN Security

which allowed unchallenged access into your building, you would want to be certain that the home at the far end of the tunnel was equally secure as the main building, likewise any laptops, etc. allowed to connect direct into your system should be secured to the same level. We should also think about the different aims of cyber attacks. Some attacks are designed for nuisance value and are the equivalent of vandalism – this could be somebody who considers managing to break into your system as a challenge and then once they have achieved it, they leave behind something destructive to show that they have been there. Some attacks don’t even need to get into your systems to create havoc, there is what is known as Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, where there is a massive amount of contact attempted which, blocks usual communication – in the physical model this would be like blocking the street leading to your premises with thousands of people all trying to knock on the door and say hello, then leave. The most dangerous attacks though are the ones that aim to not leave a trace, if a cyber attacker manages to get into your

system, obtain information, then leave without you being aware, this could be the equivalent of a corporate spy picking the lock of the Managing Directors office, snooping through corporate documents copying whatever was of interest, then creeping out again locking the door behind them! We should also mention that despite any protection to the system, there is always the human aspect. A good IT policy about being careful with attachments, not disclosing passwords to others, bringing in unchecked discs, external hard drives, and usb sticks, and being wary of financial transactions, is the equivalent of asking them not to leave windows open, mail out cheques in response to any invoice received, etc. This has only been a basic introduction into cyber security, but hopefully it has shown that you can find analogies with physical security, and in doing so realise that cyber security is simply more areas of consideration for the security manager, but just because it is happening down cables and in computer systems, it is still a case of controlling access and protecting assets. n

BSIA members look forward to IFSEC International 2017 The 2016 edition of IFSEC International attracted over 27,000 visitors with a total budget spend of over £30bn, reaffirming its position as the UK’s premier exhibition for the security industry. The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) – partner to IFSEC International – is looking forward to 2017’s event, which is set to be another impressive show.

s the trade association representing seventy percent of the UK’s private security industry, the BSIA relishes the opportunity to engage with the industry’s leading brands; no other security exhibition in the UK presents a better opportunity to do this. IFSEC therefore remains an essential fixture in the Association’s calendar. This year, the BSIA will be located on stand B1700, promoting the importance of quality as a key consideration when procuring security products or services and encouraging security buyers to begin their IFSEC journey with the BSIA. The Association’s stand will also host an exclusive meeting area for the use of BSIA members. A key function of IFSEC is to provide both security buyers and industry colleagues with access to education and thought leadership. As in previous years, 2017’s busy programme of seminars and debates features many of the BSIA’s staff and member experts, providing a wealth of expertise across a wide spectrum of industry topics. This year’s show will see the return of the Smart Zone which proved incredibly popular during its launch in 2016. The Smart Zone showcases the capabilities of smart security technology and features a fully functioning ‘smart home’ in the middle of the exhibition floor, covering not only home automation devices, but also the wider Internet of Things, including smart commercial buildings, smart offices and connected security systems. Another new feature for 2017 will be the Borders and Infrastructure Expo. The ‘show within a show’ focuses directly on products, solutions and learning for largescale security issues such as border control, critical national infrastructure, law enforcement, transport and the protection of key strategic assets. Within the Installer Zone, teams of young security apprentices will

be competing against each other in a live installation challenge for the chance to claim a £1,000 prize at the Security and Fire Excellence Awards in November. The Engineers of Tomorrow competition returns to IFSEC for the nineteenth year and will see competitors undertake a 90 minute assessment, working in pairs to install and commission an intruder alarm system. With so much on offer, it comes as no surprise that IFSEC continues to attract a huge number of visitors from a wide range of industry sectors, given the abundance of leading security companies coupled with the industry’s most comprehensive educational programme. BSIA members continue to attend IFSEC in force and end-users can expect to find many of the Association’s members on the show floor, including:

Altron – Stand B710 Altron is a leading manufacturer of CCTV poles, columns, towers and associated mounting equipment. Based in the UK, they ship products across the world for sectors including Oil and Gas, Industrial, Commercial, City Centre, Government and many more. exhibited. Elmdene will also be showcasing the PoE MiniPod™, a PoE+ powered device that provides four hours of back-up power to critical PoE cameras. In the event of a mains drop out, the MiniPod™ enables a continuous recording of high-security cameras. Visitors to IFSEC will be able to view live demonstrations of both the PoE UlraPod™ and PoE MiniPod™. Elmdene’s CCTV PSU Range of power supplies that provide neat, easy and flexible installation of analogue CCTV systems will also be displayed on their stand. General Manager of Elmdene International, Sharon Ramsay, comments: “IFSEC is an ideal opportunity to meet with existing and potential new customers, all under one roof! It’s also a brilliant platform for us to showcase our new innovative products and to gather critical feedback from installers regarding our products. Finally, with the various evening events, it’s also a great chance for manufacturers, industry bodies and customers to all network together.” www.elmdene.co.uk

Knight Fire and Security Products Knight will be having meetings at various stands across IFSEC and will also be utilising the BSIA members’ lounge. This year Knight are pleased to announce that the SEISMO ADVANCE unit meets the brand new CENELEC publication of EN 50131-2-8:2016, as it includes four selectable fault output resistors which can be configured in a triple EOL configuration. Knight will be promoting this product throughout IFSEC 2017 with demonstrations and can arrange samples. Mike Inker, Sales Manager (UK and Ireland), comments: “IFSEC has consistently proven to be a fantastic opportunity for us to meet with our export distributors, as well as our UK customers under one roof and over several days. As a market leading UK manufacturer of high quality EN 50131 graded intruder alarm and access control components for over 30 years, we

place great value on the unique and convenient chance to see our longer distance customers in person. Business introductions that began as chance meetings at IFSEC many years ago have since become long term personal relationships. We are confident that IFSEC 2017 will reach those same high standards.” www.knightfireandsecurity.com

Nocturna – Stand F1700 Nocturna is part of the award-winning IRNV Group specialising in innovative infrared night vision products. They provide hardware and support to security, military and blue light industries worldwide with their range of night vision products, providing crystal clear low light imagery up to 500 metres away. Even in a domestic setting, their handheld products will help to protect the home by giving users the ability to see clearly in the dark of the night or in the most enclosed spaces. At IFSEC Southeast Asia 2016, Nocturna unveiled their new handheld night vision range, continuing their commitment to support and react to an everchanging global marketplace. International Sales Manager, Jake Howell, says: “IFSEC International allows us to showcase our products and services to the full security

industry. This enables us to develop and maintain customer relationships and allows us to establish new business partnerships. By having the whole security industry under one roof, it gives us access to the new technologies available and any future trends, which allows us to get to grips with the market and what our customers expect from us.” www.nocturna.co.uk

Skyguard – Stand M200 (Safety and Health Expo) Skyguard will be exhibiting at IFSEC International this year and have recently launched a new version of their Windows Mobile smartphone app which connects to their ‘SmartButton’ Bluetooth panic button accessory. Skyguard will be demonstrating their range of exclusive dedicated devices and smartphone apps, which are certified to the new BS8484:2016 standard. For clients who place an order as a result of meeting Skyguard at the Safety and Health Expo this year, Skyguard will be offering the first month’s service subscription free. Marketing Director, Will Murray, comments: “Skyguard have for many years enjoyed successful product launches and promotions at the Protection and Management Series and this year is no different, with a brand new version of our Windows Mobile app which connects to our SmartButton accessory and an exclusive special offer for clients who sign up to our service as a result of meeting us at the show.” www.skyguard.co.uk n
