elcome to the first issue of In Security for 2012. The next 12 months promises to be an important one for the security sector; most notably, the industry will be firmly in the spotlight during the London Olympic Games, which take place this summer. The eyes of the world will be on east London; while the athletes will rightly take centre stage, security staff will be quietly going about their business to make the Games safe. We will feature more on this subject in the next issue of In Security, and after the Games have come and gone we will focus on what went well – and not so well – from a security point of view. So watch this space, as they say. In the meantime there’s plenty to get stuck into in this issue. We focus on Mode-AL’s cost-effective multiple monitor mounting system, which is specifically targeted at the security, process and retail industries (see page 18). We also look at the work Dallmeier is doing in improving the visitor at an allpurpose venue in Austria, and see how its technology was incorporated into the security features at Europe’s largest casino. Our Company Profile starts on page 20. One company making waves in the education sector is Progeny. Starting on page 24 we look at how the firm’s innovative new technology allowed access and security to be combined into a seamless solution at a college in northern England.
The video surveillance feature in this issue (see page 28) looks at how Samsung video surveillance equipment has been deployed at one of the most exciting retail environments to open in London in recent years. Sweet success, we say. In what I’m sure you’ll agree is an important area, Patrick Dealty looks at the solutions available to protect those who work alone. Patrick is Chairman of the Lone Worker Steering Group of the British Security Industry Association, and his feature makes fascinating reading (see page 36). Motor sport is the focus for our feature starting on page 44, where we see how Barco improves the Formula One experience for race controllers and the media alike. We’ve also got two expo reviews in this issue. Leading IP & HD surveillance manufacturers and suppliers will be displaying their latest products in more than 750 booths at Secutech, held in April in Taipei, Taiwan (see page 32); while Counter Terror Expo 2012 delegates are set to discover how the momentous events that have occurred during the past year will force the reassessment of counter terrorism strategies. The event, which takes place in London in April, is featured on page 34. Last but not least, don’t forget our comprehensive Product News section, which kicks off on page 8. Happy reading. Lock, stock and barrel Abloy introduces new premium high-security locking cylinder
ABLOY® PRoTec2 is the latest milestone in the development of the unique ABLOY® rotating disc cylinder keying systems that offers several unsurpassed and superior security features and benefits
W
ith more than 100 years of experience in locking technology, Finland-based Abloy is constantly developing products that offer true peace of mind. The Abloy cylinder mechanism uses rotating discs rather than traditional pins and springs and is widely recognised by security professionals as the world’s premium high-security locking system. The Abloy Protec keying platform that was launched in 2001 is now being supplemented by Abloy Protec2, a new development that employs new features protected by worldwide patents until 2031. Abloy Protec2 offers numerous benefits over conventional locking products. The extensive range of Abloy Protec2 products offers solutions for security applications all the way from door environments to industrial applications and associated equipment. In addition to customer-specific requirements, Abloy Protec2 meets or exceeds the demands of national and international standards.
Award-winning combination The level of security provided by an Abloy Protec2 master key system can be further enhanced by incorporating Abloy’s intelligent CLIQ technology, which combines electronic identification with the mechanical key system. Different Abloy Protec2 products can be keyed into the same master key system, allowing all products in a system to be operated using just one key. In 2011, the Abloy Protec CLIQ Remote high-security locking solution won two awards in the Access Control category at international trade fairs in Singapore and the UK. The Disc Blocking System (DBS) in Abloy Protec2 cylinders – a patented feature which prevents manipulation of the discs – makes them virtually pick-proof and bumpproof. Security levels have been further improved by incorporating a new disc controller and key design. For the lock to function, the patented disc controller structure requires an internal match between the cylinder and a moving element in the key.
The unique disc mechanism in Abloy Protec2, superior design and precision manufacturing provide reliable, long-lasting operation even in the most extreme conditions.
Complete product range The Abloy product range includes mechanical and electromechanical door locks, door closers, door automatics and fire door closing systems, padlocks, cam and cabinet locks and architectural hardware. The product range offers a complete solution to security, safety and ease of access requirement in whole buildings. Abloy locks are used extensively by private, commercial and government concerns who demand the ultimate in high security. They are available through the Abloy Oy world-wide network of sales units and approved distributors. All Abloy cylinder locking products are designed and manufactured in Finland. solution experts near to the customers all around the world. The main target groups are construction projects, professional end-users, original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and residential customers. Abloy carries a global high security brand image reflecting its unique technology that creates a solid base for success in international markets.
History and today The unique Abloy lock and key was invented in 1907 by Emil Henriksson, an office machinery mechanic in Helsinki, Finland. While repairing a cash register, he realised that the rotating cylindrical disks of the machine were eminently suitable for use as a lock mechanism. The first locks went on sale two years later and lock production at Ab Låsfabriken–Lukkotehdas Oy began in 1918. The name Abloy is formed from the letters of this company’s name. New scanner allows liquids back into aircraft cabin baggage Cobalt Light Systems has received European approval for its revolutionary INSIGHT100 bottle scanner, which enables aircraft passengers to carry liquid items larger than 100ml once more. Airports could now allow passengers to take items such as water, cosmetics, perfumes and duty free through airport security channels from as early as 2013. The current ban on items over 100ml in hand baggage can only be lifted when airports are able to effectively screen quickly and without opening the containers. INSIGHT100 screens individual bottles in less than five seconds to determine whether there is a security threat. The INSIGHT100 scanner exceeded the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) standard for use at airports with an almost perfect detection capability and negligible false alarm rate in unopened containers, ensuring maximum safety for the travelling public with the minimum delays. What makes INSIGHT100 special is the capability of identifying explosives unambiguously inside opaque bottles such as coloured plastic shampoo containers, or green glass wine bottles. Other systems do not precisely identify the threat reliably and may lead to large numbers of false alarms or to missing genuine threats. The system is currently in trials at several major European airports. The INSIGHT100 system uses a proprietary technology called Spatially Offset Raman Spectroscopy (SORS), which was pioneered at the Science & Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) Central Laser Facility at its Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire, and led to the creation of Cobalt Light Systems as a spin out of STFC.
8 I February 2012 I IN Security
Dr Paul Loeffen, Chief Executive Officer of Cobalt Light Systems, said: “We have worked incredibly hard over the last couple of years to refine the SORS technology and bring the INSIGHT100 to market. It is a great achievement to have exceeded the European standards at this stage so that we are in a prime position to supply this unique bottle screener to European airports.” The development of the INSIGHT100 was funded under the Innovative Research Call in Explosives and Weapons Detection (2010) initiative, a cross-government programme sponsored by a number of government departments and agencies under the CONTEST strategy. Prof. Pavel Matousek, at STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and inventor of the SORS technique said: “Since STFC made the breakthrough in discovering SORS a few years ago, we have worked closely with the team at Cobalt Light Systems to develop and refine this technology. It is particularly exciting to see how this particular scientific development could now go on to make a real difference to the safety of our society.” The restriction on liquids was introduced following a failed al-Qaeda bomb plot in August 2006 to bring down several airliners departing London for North America – the terrorists aimed to use liquid explosives carried onto aircraft in bottles. Recently, the European Commission agreed to relax the limit on liquids by introducing new screening measures from April 2013. In just over a year from now, passengers will again be allowed to carry on that expensive bottle of champagne as a gift for friends, provided the bottle is screened. n For further information visit www.cobaltlight.com
Aesthetic access control doubles with cutting-edge technology Controlling access into buildings and general security of property, people and information has perhaps never been as high on the agenda as it is today. Safeguarding valuable assets has become a priority for any business, property owner or tenant alike and architects and designers are increasingly looking at access control and security as an essential fabric of a building. But in the past have compromises on aesthetics been made in order to ensure a building is safe and secure? With a new design led range of access control readers from Progeny compromise is not on the agenda. The highly attractive Crystal Reader range brings cutting edge design into access control. The readers make use of proximity RFID technology and can be easily configured to work with Progeny’s popular C2, P1, P2 and P3 access control systems. The readers are fast, feature an optional enhanced LED glow, offer low cost credentials
and are IP rated for external as well as internal use. Units 3800 and 3820 feature a stainless steel fascia. All Progeny products are provided with a lifetime warranty further reinforcing product quality and superior design. When used as part of an access control system from Progeny the readers offer a stylish, modern design solution which is proving extremely popular among architects and designers.

Ievo unveils internal only biometric solution Ievo has added another fingerprint reader to its security range. The new Ievo Micro boasts many of the original features of the Ultimate, including the credible multispectral imaging sensor, seamless integration and 8,000 unique fingerprint capacity. Having successfully launched the original Ievo Ultimate reader just two years ago, Ievo was keen to produce another biometric solution based on an abundance of responses from current installers of the original reader. From this feedback, the idea of an internal only fingerprint reader came to the fore, which would provide extra variety for installers pursuing projects that required a cost effective, yet reliable and practical security solution similar to the Ultimate product. By developing this idea further other features that were developed include spoof detection, where the reader is able to differentiate between live human fingerprints as opposed to synthetic man-made prints. Micro also retains its functionality even with types of creams and powders on the skin as well as with the user wearing some types of latex gloves. Alternate options for mounting, include mullion that will provide the user with extra choice on how to display their security system without it looking
too out of place within the surroundings. Finally, Ievo have maintained the advantageous feature of seamless integration into existing card, fob and proximity systems causing very little disruption during the installation process. Managing Director of Ievo Shaun Oakes said: “Our new internal only fingerprint reader has solely been created to add variety to our unrivalled biometric range, yet maintain quality and reliability that many access control products lack within the security industry. Having provisionally launched Micro to our existing customers we received quotes for projects including cash offices, server rooms, office blocks – even people’s homes. This shows that even though Micro is half the size it is still as feature-rich as the Ultimate reader and clearly has a market of its own out there.” Simon Farmer from ACC Security Solutions has had a demonstration of the Micro reader. He said: “It’s small, light and attractive, yet has many of the same features as the Ultimate. I will be recommending Micro to my clients as a dependable and reliable internal only security solution.” n For pricing and technical information, contact the Ievo sales and technical team on 0845 643 6632

PService takes control of Dallmeier security networks PService is a powerful application that allows for a comfortable configuration and administration of comprehensive VideoIP systems from Dallmeier. PService scans the video network for Dallmeier devices, automatically detects those and displays them in an overview. Recorders and cameras can thus be administered conveniently. The comprehensive functions range from changing IP addresses to updates for camera and recorder software and up to user and rights administration. It is also possible to restart the devices via PService. PService can be used for all Dallmeier network cameras and all Dallmeier recorders as from the fourth generation. The recorders and cameras that are detected during the network scan can conveniently be moved to a directory tree using Drag&Drop and then be divided into different groups, so-called virtual systems. This allows for a clear and structured representation of the entire VideoIP system. The system structure can be saved – and the software does so not only for a local network: When installed on a mobile device PService also saves structure and data of the defined virtual systems for independent networks of different objects. The installer’s or technician’s work becomes easier and time-saving: For the next customer visit the saved settings can be recalled simply and quickly.
A preview function is available for network cameras, so that the camera image can be viewed directly in PService. A live camera access via browser is also possible. The layout of the different PService application areas is not static but flexible and movable. The individual windows can be specifically adjusted and positioned. PService enables the execution of updates for all network components (cameras and recorders). Identical device models with identical software versions can be updated simultaneously. It is therefore possible to update an entire product range at once and save a lot of time. n PService is available for free download from the Dallmeier Partner Forum. Permanent perimeter security at Counter Terror Expo The Britpave Concrete Security Barrier (BsecB) will be exhibited at the Counter Terror Expo at London’s Olympia on 25th – 26th April 2012. The stand will feature both the basic barrier and an ‘all-in-one’ perimeter security fence and barrier solution. Developed by Britpave, BsecB has been designed to negate the threat from terrorism and criminal attack. Full-scale tests have proved that the barrier has the ability to stop an 18 tonne lorry travelling at 50mph (80kph) and would also prevent any follow-up vehicles from getting through. BsecB is a high impact barrier and has been successfully tested to BSI PAS 68:2010. The barrier has been installed at a number of critical infrastructure sites throughout the UK. BsecB’s robustness and long-term performance means investing in a long-term security solution, to protect for years ahead. Once installed it requires no maintenance and is built to last for up to 50 years. The barrier has been developed to provide permanent perimeter protection for key government and commercial sites such as airfields, airports, power stations, transportation infrastructure, fuel storage and distribution depots. Combined with a security fencing installation, the
system offers a single line of high-level protection. This further development is the ‘all-in-one’ BsecB solution where a tested fence is fixed to the top of the concrete barrier providing the ultimate vehicle and intruder perimeter security protection. This single perimeter system provides significant benefits over alternative twin fence systems such as minimum land-take. “BsecB offers sensitive buildings and infrastructure a robust defence against the threat of terrorism and criminal activity,” said David Jones, director of Britpave. “It is a proven system that is readily available from our licensed installers.” n For further information visit www.britpave.org.uk

Salto ready for the smartphone future At the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, a number of smartphone manufacturers demonstrated how their new models would be able to be used as ‘keys’ to unlock doors, much like smart cards do today when used in hotels, universities, etc. The secret behind this ability to turn a smartphone into a key comes courtesy of Near Field Communications (NFC) technology. This enables both commercial and residential lock systems to be unlocked with the phones thus providing an alternative method of door security other than mechanical keys and smart access cards. This move towards creating keyless buildings by upping the game from proximity cards to smartphones is exciting stuff for companies in the access control world. SALTO Systems are already anticipating the new technology with a complete product range of electronic locks and readers that are already NFC compatible with the future built in. Near Field Communications (NFC) is a short range wireless technology enabling communications between devices. It operates at 13.56MHz over a range of a few centimetres (typically less than 10cm) and complements many popular consumer level wireless technologies. One of the main advantages NFC offers is its compatibility with existing contactless card infrastructure, enabling a user to utilise one device across many different systems. The aim of NFC is to allow contactless transactions and connectivity in a fully interoperable way and make life easier and more convenient for consumers around the world by making it
simpler to make transactions, exchange digital content, and connect electronic devices with just a touch. Among its many applications will be access control, where hotels will probably be among the first to employ smartphones as ‘electronic keys’. It will work like this. Guests will make a hotel room reservation via the internet or by telephone as they do now, and will then receive their booking confirmation on their mobile phone. Ahead of their arrival at the hotel, they will then receive a welcome message and a reminder to check in to their room via their smartphone. When they arrive at the hotel they can bypass checkin (and its queues) and go straight to their room, their hotel room ‘key’ having been sent to the smartphone over-the-air. Here they simply present the handset to the reader on the escutcheon – as they would do now with a conventional Mifare smart card – and the door will unlock. The door lock will then communicate with the front desk PMS system (Property Management Software) to let the hotel know the guest has entered the room. As with a current hotel ‘key’ the smartphone will only be able to open the door for the programmed access time. At the end of their stay guests will check out with their NFC smartphone, and once the digital hotel room key stored in the phone expires, access rights to their room are cancelled and the ‘key’ is then automatically deactivated from the smartphone. Keith Carey, Marketing Manager SALTO Systems UK, said: “Having a product range that is already NFC capable means SALTO offers an easy migration route to smartphone use as an access credential, enabling end users to enjoy all the advantages of a ‘keyless’ building that is secure, as well as smart to own, operate and manage.” n For further information visit www.saltosystems.com

International Sales & Marketing Director Sara Bullock said: “When we decided to embark on the development project for the PanoCam360 megapixel camera series with our sister company AMGPanogenics, it quickly became clear that we would need to work with a two tier branding strategy. Hence, the decision to market the transmission product ranges under the AMG Transmission Solution brand and the Camera ranges under the AMGPanogenics brand. It was a natural process to extend this philosophy to a new website design, which will hopefully make it much easier for our customers to find all the product information they need. The new site also reflects that fact that AMG has been developing an increasing number of customised solutions for specialised applications such as Remote Operating Vehicles/ Submersibles, off-shore life safety systems, and border solutions as well as battlefield asset protection.”
AMG has included a very comprehensive documentation library under downloads. The library is organised to facilitate ease of use for all relevant documents. Likewise, the product section has been enhanced with the new Camera and NVR products. AMG will now be seeking feedback from the users. Most notably the site will frequently be updated with new downloadable product documentation as well as press releases and case studies. n Visit www.amgsystems.com for more

Media Walls
Screen test We focus on Mode-AL’s cost-effective multiple monitor mounting system
T
he Media Wall range is specifically targeted at the security, process and retail industries as they tend to require off-theshelf deliveries, fast set-up on site, and a more cost-effective product. Consulting with distributors, clients and industry specific experts, Mode-AL started with a blank canvas and using the knowledge from its internationally successful Monitor Stack system produced the Media Wall range. Using the firm’s simple menu pricing structure, it is easy to cost and specify a Mode-AL Media Wall. The company aims to provide pricing to all UK customers within 48 hours, European customers within 2-3 days and its USA operation is able to offer the same quick turn around for their local customers. So what is the difference between a Monitor Stack and a Media Wall? A Monitor Stack is individually tailored to each client’s requirement with no limit on height, width or shape. Each screen is positioned so the faces are within 1 mm of the adjacent screen faces and the firm routinely incorporate UMD’s (under monitor displays) clocks, speakers, 19” rack mounted equipment, sequential start power distribution, optical repeaters, MEUs (multiformat engine units) and a whole host of other equipment within the stack, all contained within a depth of 180mm and with full cable management. A Media Wall has been designed with a very different purpose. The most economical way of mounting
18 I February 2012 I IN Security
multiple screens both space and cost wise. The most important feature taken from our Monitor Stack range is the cable management, as this was key to the development focus group’s requirements. Secondly. Mode-AL’s unique screen mounting brackets allow the removal of the screen with as little as 5mm clearance between screens above and adjacent to it and, of course, the bank tilt, allowing a whole bank of screens tilted to the same angle, taking hours off the set up time. A Media Wall has three available leg heights – 2m, 2.2m and 2.4m. The legs have optional 3” cable trays, allowing the client to specify how many (if any) are required.
Mode-AL also has optional end covers to keep the cost of the legs down. If the legs are not seen, why go to the expense of having end covers? And for another available option, the standard Media Wall feet can be swapped for bolt-down bases if required. It also has customer definable beam lengths up to 3.2m between legs, and a choice of three sizes of beams – 60mm, 120mm and 180mm deep. Each beam has a 3” cable tray as standard with 2” and 4” options available if required. Again, optional under slung cable tray brackets bring monitor stack versatility to the Media Wall range. Stub beams are also available, allowing small screens to be mounted on short sections of beam cantilevered out from the legs. n

Bring in the new All-purpose venue Multiversum improves the visitor experience with Dallmeier technology
F
rom cultural functions to sporting events to trade shows and exhibits, The Multiversum in the Austrian city of Schwechat offers guests a varied programme. When it comes to providing highquality HD TV broadcasts and securing the interior and exterior of the multi-purpose hall Dallmeier video technology is used. The Multiversum in the Austrian city of Schwechat, officially opened in January 2011, is a unique, multifunctional venue. It hosts concerts and readings as well as sports events, trade shows, exhibits and business functions. The basic concept of the Multiversum is a triple sports hall. Owing to its state-of-the-art infrastructure and its flexible floor plan even the most extraordinary event ideas can be realized. Event organizers are offered a complete service package for their events, including all work from planning to implementation. The high-value technical systems the Multiversum

offers include internet TV, broadcasts in HD quality and ‘Plug & Play’, which is particularly important to TV stations. A competent partner was needed for the design and implementation of a comprehensive infrastructure that would keep up with the stateof-the-art event technology. Kapsch BusinessCom, a leading ICT service partner, was up to the job. The comprehensive solution provided by Kapsch includes video surveillance, access control, IT network and server systems – everything from one source. The products for the video surveillance system come from Regensburg-based company Dallmeier. “First, the necessary structured cabling was installed in order to prepare the Multiversum for a complete Dallmeier CCTV/IP system with 27 camera and recording functions, some of them in HD quality,” says Bernhard Litschauer, Project Engineer with Kapsch. The system monitors the entire
exterior of the event complex as well as the entrance and the hallways inside. The video system is furthermore used in a very special area. The second floor of the Multiversum accommodates the so-called ‘MultiTraining’, a training area equipped with the latest gym machines, where amateurs as well as top athletes exercise. Unfortunately, every now and then, a sporting accident occurs, for instance because somebody overestimated their abilities and exercised with too much weight. Using the video recordings it is now possible to see exactly what happened. Apart from these classic surveillance tasks the video system at the Multiversum serves another purpose: The hall, where sports events or concerts take place, is monitored with the full HD cameras. Their video signals can also be used for TV broadcasts. The Dallmeier system is thus not only a security system but also a PR and information tool. The live streams from the
The Multiversum complex uses a variety of Dallmeier products depending on the area of application
cameras go directly into the digital signage system and are shown on monitors in the halls’ VIP area, together with current scores and commercials. Norbert Prantner, the head of technical operations at the Multiversum, is excited: “With the new features such as TV broadcasts in HD we meet and, indeed, exceed the requirements of all kinds of events. The image quality is outstanding.”
Hybrid application Depending on the area of application the Multiversum uses different Dallmeier products: analogue dome cameras for exterior surveillance and high-resolution full HD PTZ cameras for monitoring the hall. “In some cases the cabling distances were very long, so we chose to use a hybrid solution. That way we were able to use analogue cameras with two-wire cabling for long distances and still use full HD network cameras in the same system,” Litschauer explains. The image data are recorded on two DMS 240 ‘In Memory of
Leonardo’ recorders. These are digital video recorders that are specifically characterised by their hybrid functionality, which means that analogue as well as IP cameras can be recorded on the same device. The video system is controlled using the PView7 management software that provides various display possibilities for live images and comprehensive search functions within the recordings.
The Multiversum is highly satisfied with the solution provided by Kapsch and the Dallmeier technology. Litschauer is also delighted: “The cooperation with our distributor erdkreis, who we order the products from, as well as with the manufacturer Dallmeier is smooth. That enables us to offer our end customer a high-value complete solution.” >

Access control
A class act Progeny’s innovation allows access and security to be combined into a seamless solution
T
he challenges involved in securing a school are diverse and varied and unlike those in almost any other building. The premises have to be secure while at the same time allow for free and easy access by pupils, staff and visitors alike. In an environment where personal safety and ensuring that only those with appropriate authority to access the premises is crucially important the need to balance security with free movement may seem almost impossible. Managing the smooth running of a school in today’s competitive and safety conscious world is not an easy task. Modern schools are diverse cosmopolitan places and the sheer volume of ‘door activity’ means access control is a huge issue and if it is not managed correctly it could potentially result in serious problems. To compound the issue parents are now taking a much more critical look at all aspects of
24 I February 2012 I IN Security
a potential school, as well as the obvious educational standards and security and safety are increasingly getting higher on the agenda. So how is the correct balance between freedom of movement and security achieved? In most schools there is a large number of buildings, classrooms and other places where pupils and teachers need to access. Securing external doors by the use of keys only solves part of the problem and in most cases the sheer numbers of keys required to secure even the most modest of schools prevents this from being a workable solution. This combined with issuing bunches of keys to several member of staff only exacerbates the problem. But there is a solution. Take Moorland School, for example. Founded 1931, Moorland School is a thriving co-educational day and boarding school located in the historic town of Clitheroe, Lancashire. As the school caters for a wide age group, from two to 16 years, and also has boarders,
there is a real need to ensure efficient security for pupils, staff and equipment and this is heightened further by the numerous buildings located on a large 15-acre site. Moorland turned to the power of technology and Progeny, manufactured in the UK by BSB Electronics, to meet the challenge.
Audit process After a survey of the site and an audit of how access should be managed Progeny’s P3 online system was chosen. P3 online was selected for several reasons; one of the key features is the system’s ability to grow according to the application needs. It is efficient and costeffective and in conjunction with the design led Crystal readers allows access via a number of mechanisms ideally suited to a school such as Moorland. P3 online also offers many superior technical features such as three methods of connectivity: USB to a server computer; LAN/ WAN making use of an existing data
The new proximity Crystal Reader range brings cutting edge design to access control. The highly attractive readers are both stylish and contemporary
network; and GPRS for difficult to reach applications. The P3 access controller is designed with flexibility in mind. It can be programmed to function both stand-alone and from a PC and allows small systems to grow, with capacity for up to 1,000000 users. The event log capacity is 60,000 and Ethernet connectivity is also possible. The controller also features a USB host interface, which is capable of reading and writing to a standard USB memory stick. The system uses Doors Enterprise software and two versions are available: Doors Enterprise Software standard or Doors Enterprise software professional. The latest release is version 7, which is utilised by the school and includes many additional features including Photo ID card printing, time sheet, simplified user interface, Progeny Express links, custom database fields and new help wizards. Currently over 60 doors are being managed by the system and access is achieved via a combination of sticky dots, key fobs, cards and
hall, accommodation areas for the boarders and all of the other buildings and rooms throughout the school including the school’s state of the art sports hall and complex.
Intelligent programming
ID badges. As well as the teaching staff and school management being able to freely move throughout the school using these methods all students have been equipped with an entry card, thus improving access throughout the school and helping to increase efficiency of movement equating to more time spent in the classroom. The system manages and monitors access in the nursery, kindergarten, junior and senior school, sports
Intelligent programming has been built into the management of the access throughout the school such as time zone locks and automatic door locking at certain times of the day. Commenting on the success of the P3 online system installation at Moorland School, Ian Bend, BSB’s Technical Director, said: “Moorland School was looking for an efficient and cost-effective solution to manage access throughout the school, particularly when school security is high on the agenda for both teachers and parents alike. P3 online was the perfect solution because as well as being highly efficient and cost-effective it can grow with the school’s requirements, so over time the system can cater for extra doors as they become necessary.” >

The new access control system has been hugely successful for the school and helps safeguard the school’s most important assets, the pupils and teachers, as well as protecting property and building from unauthorised access
“This system as our first line of defence in the safeguarding and protection of everyone within our community”
The new access control system has been hugely successful for the school and helps safeguard the school’s most important assets, the pupils and teachers, as well as protecting property and building from unauthorised access. Jonathan Harrison, Headteacher at Moorland School, is delighted with the installation. Commenting on the P3 online system he said: “Students and house parents have said they feel safe, and that their belongings and personal space is far more protected than before. The P3 system allows
26 I February 2012 I IN Security
the senior leadership team to track students and staff across the school site, and we are planning to embed the system into our school attendance policy, as the software used by the system allows detailed reports to be produced, such as time in and time out.” Harrison said: “Safeguarding children is our greatest responsibility and therefore our greatest risk. I have embedded the Progeny access control system as our first line of defence in the safeguarding and protection of the children and adults within our community.”
Conclusion It would seem that Progeny’s P3 online system ticks all the boxes when it comes to safeguarding personnel and property in the modern education system. The innovative use of technology, online connectivity and highly attractive Crystal Readers can transform the functioning of the school and, as far as is humanly possible, ensure safety, security and free movement for students and authorised personnel. n

Sweet success for Samsung M&M’s World chooses Samsung solution for flagship store

”A key objective for us therefore is to operate an effective security regime which is capable of deterring thieves, as well as creating a safe and secure environment for customers and staff”
S
amsung video surveillance equipment has been deployed at one of the most exciting retail environments to have opened in London in recent years. M&M’s World London, which is owned by the Mars Retail Group, can lay claim to be the largest confectionary store in the World. It occupies a 35,000 sq. ft. four storey building where customers have the opportunity to buy M&M’s chocolates and branded merchandise such as soft toys, kitchenware, clothing, bedding, jewellery and glassware. Located in Leicester Square, it is the first M&M’s World London World to open in Europe and features a giant wall of chocolate where customers can create their own M&M’s selection from over 100 choices. Daniel Clare is a Loss Prevention Specialist for M&M’s World London. As such he has the responsibility of managing a security team which is tasked with detecting shoplifters and other would be trouble makers who are tempted to enter the
Leicester Square store. His job title, however, does not comprehensively cover the full extent of his workload, as he is also responsible for compliance with the company’s health & safety policy and also performs the role of facilities manager. “This is a colourful, lively store which customers enjoy visiting,” said Clare. “A key objective for us therefore is to operate an effective security regime which is capable of deterring thieves, as well as creating a safe and secure environment for customers and staff, and which does not negatively impact on the store’s fun atmosphere.” The store employs a team of highly trained security officers who discretely guard the store whilst meeting and greeting visitors. Very early on in the process of designing the layout of the store it was decided to invest in the very latest video surveillance technology to complement and support the activities of the security offices. “We wanted a camera system which
could capture and record video of any criminal activity to pass onto the police. The company’s experience at our other three stores located in the US had taught us that a properly specified and installed surveillance system can be a very powerful tool which can help security personnel make fast and effective decisions if and when an incident occurs,” said Clare. The contract to design and install the video surveillance system was awarded to Wembley-based Technica Systems. Established in 1984 and with its head office in Wembley, NSI Gold accredited Technica Systems has built up an enviable reputation for successfully installing sophisticated electronic security solutions for a long list of prestigious clients. Technica Systems installed 10 fully functional Samsung speed dome cameras, the images from which, together with the images captured by a large number of fixed cameras, are recorded onto one of seven SRD-1670D DVRs. networked together and controlled by a Samsung SPC-6000 keyboard allowing live or recorded images to be viewed on one of seven SMT series high definition LCD Samsung monitors. “M&M’s World London placed a lot of importance in providing its security personnel with the best possible tools for the job in hand and that meant selecting cameras which featured the very latest technology,” said Harvey Jacobs, Installation Manager for Technica Systems. “Having successfully worked with Samsung cameras on other installations gave us the confidence to recommend them for this particular project, and I am pleased to say that our decision has been vindicated by the fact that the client is highly delighted with the performance of the dome cameras and the other equipment.” Eight of the dome cameras installed are Samsung SPD-2700s which have a 27x zoom capability providing M&M World’s security personnel with the ability to closely observe any suspicious activity. The other two domes are Samsung 25x zoom SCP-2250s, which incorporate true day/night cameras and feature Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA). The seven SRD-1670D DVRs are each equipped with seven terabytes of on-board storage and collectively are able to record and store high resolution full frame rate images from all of the cameras for 30 days. The cameras are monitored 24/7

from an in-store control room. The networking capability of the SRD1670Ds, however, can allow M&M’s World’s senior management based in the US to observe live images or retrieve recorded video captured by any of the cameras. “This is a great feature which adds substantially to the return on our investment in the system,” said Clare. “It means that as well as helping us with our security requirements, our merchandisers, for example, can obtain valuable information on customer buying patterns whilst working from their offices in the US.”
Clare and his colleagues have quickly become big fans of a camera system which has already led to the detection of a large number of would-be shoplifters. “Apart from opportunistic thieves, this part of London sadly suffers from the activities of a large number of pickpockets,” said Clare. “The video surveillance system has been extremely useful in helping us spot these pickpockets and we have been able to provide evidence to the police which has led to successful arrests and prosecutions.” n

C
ounter Terror Expo 2012 delegates are set to discover how the momentous events that have occurred during the past year, will force us to reassess and realign counter terrorism strategies to meet potential new threats emerging from the turmoil we have witnessed. Previously hard-line autocracies across a swathe of North Africa have been toppled in popular uprisings; significant civil unrest has occurred in Middle East countries where demand for change continues to be heard loudly, political turmoil in some South Asian nations has given rise to fears a period of dangerous instability may be looming, whilst insurgency in some Sub Saharan countries has led to jihadist inspired terrorist atrocities. Escalating belligerence from Iran, a rapidly deepening political crisis in Pakistan, continuing instability in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, widespread civil unrest in Syria and Yemen and extremist sponsored violence in Nigeria, all combine to set the stage for an uncertain year ahead and have the potential to directly threaten stability elsewhere in the world. These issues have emerged at a time of significant fiscal crisis amongst leading world economies; thus presenting a substantial challenge to industry professionals tasked with delivering effective countermeasures in constrained circumstance. This is the fractious backdrop against which delegates from across the globe will gather in London in late April for Counter Terror Expo 2012. Regional instability Al Qa’ida leader Osama bin Laden is dead; the remaining leadership is being successfully targeted and the terrorist organisation continues to

fragment according to reports. Ali Abdullah Saleh of Yemen has been forced to cede power to Vice President Abd Rabbuh Mansur al-Had, whilst the increasingly beleaguered Bashar al-Assad of Syria may also be forced from office soon. Western politicians have been happy to stress that these are the positive outcomes of the past year, but somewhat less than keen to discuss the possible challenges this period of regional upheaval may present us with. Counter Terror Expo 2012 delegates will discover that the successful targeting of the Al Qa’ida leadership and the much welcomed regional regime change, has prompted significant concern behind the headlines as to the potential consequences stemming from a region that continues to be in flux. Europe has particular concern regarding continuing instability in these neighboring regions; given the events have potential consequence for security along its fragile southern and eastern borders. Europe had a taste of the impact mass migration from conflict zones can have early last year and has no desire to see this issue reemerge at a time of deepening fiscal crisis in particular. The geopolitical aspects of both terrorist group fragmentation and regime change form key elements of the high level Global Counter Terrorism conference. Over a two-day period, many world-
leading experts in their respective fields, will bring clarity to the issues faced and potential solutions to them. The transatlantic relationship will also be a focus of the conference. US President Barak Obama has recently announced a slimming of US military expenditure and a shift in focus to the Pacific borders. Europe’s long reliance on transatlantic support could be in jeopardy as the US Administration turns its attention elsewhere at a critical moment. Obama declared that the tide of war is receding, called for a shrinking of Army and Marine forces, but identified Naval and Airborne assets as the means by which to address emerging threats from Iran and China. He outlined the shift in strategy during a rare appearance at the Pentagon and emphasised the White House desire to pivot away from domestically unpopular conflicts in an election year. Europe could potentially face the fallout from elongated regional conflict; when it is least able to do so, without the long reach superpower support previously given. Counter Terror Expo 2012 delegates will find themselves immersed in these geopolitical issues and possible regional solutions to them within the context of lead and supporting conference environments. n For more information, please visit www.counterterrorexpo.com/insec

Setting the standard for protecting lone workers Patrick Dealty looks at the solutions available to protect those who work alone

Choosing a solution that is compliant to BS8484 through audit ensures that at-risk employees are provided with the best and most cost-effective level of protection if they get into trouble

ore than six million people in the UK work either in isolation or without direct supervision, often in places or circumstances that put them at potential risk. A wide variety of organisations in a range of sectors – including, of course, security – employ people whose jobs require them to work or operate alone, either regularly or occasionally. Almost by definition, lone working can be both intimidating and at times dangerous, so the protection of lone workers involves a twofold approach; not only to provide safeguards but also to offer reassurance to the people involved. The nature of this work means that many are required to travel alone, often in busy city-centre locations, and often after dark, leaving them particularly at risk. To address these important issues, the security industry has worked with the police and end-users to develop a combination of practice, technology and standards capable of providing
an effective – and cost-effective solution to the risks. The development of technology and practice in the field has focused on encouraging and enabling lone workers to assess the risks they might be facing and provide them with the means both to summon aid in an emergency and collect information that can be used in evidence, if necessary. This has led to the creation of a myriad of lone worker devices equipped with mobile phone technology that connect employees quickly and discreetly with an emergency response system that has direct links to the police. A number of products are commercially available, including miniature devices that resemble ID holders. However, the range of choice currently on offer means that many employers are unsure where to start when sourcing quality lone worker solutions.
A security standard Enter British Standard 8484 (BS8484), the Code of Practice for the provision
of Lone Worker Services, which has been a key element of the security industry’s work to create such solutions. BS8484 is employed by all BSIA members in the field and forms the basis for police response to lone worker systems. James Kelly, Chief Executive of the BSIA, commented: “The BSIA’s Lone Worker Steering Group recommends that companies choose lone worker systems that are compliant to British Standard 8484, which is the Code of Practice for the provision of Lone Worker Services. BS8484 is the basis on which Police respond to lone worker systems, so it’s important for employers to choose a supplier who works to these standards.” Choosing a solution that is compliant to BS8484 through audit ensures that at-risk employees are provided with the best and most cost-effective level of protection if they get into trouble, and also gives organisations the best level of protection against litigation and legislation. >
IN Security I February 2012 I 37
It has been shown that employers who show proper concern for their at-risk staff can reduce staff absence through sickness and stress and improve staff retention
The standard has three main parts: • Part 4 the company providing the service must be stable, properly financed, insured, have effective information security and competent to provide such services. • Part 5 all devices used as personal safety alarms must meet the functional requirements of the standard. This enables an operator to verify the alarm as genuine, establish the situation and the location before passing the relevant information to the appropriate response service in a timely manner. • Part 6 refers to the Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC), which is where the alarm is received, verified and a response request sent to the appropriate service – usually the Emergency Services. ARCS must meet BS5979 Category 2 for Alarm Receiving Centres as well as BS8484 Part 6.
Ensuring police response Implementation has ensured that requests for police response are properly verified, originate with approved ARCs and contain the right information. The result is a minimum of false alarms which justifies the commitment by the Police to provide an ‘immediate’ response where possible. The Police manage alarms and approval for the ‘immediate’ level of response through their Security Systems Policy by the issue of a URN (Unique Reference Number). For Lone Worker alarms, the Policy demands that all links in the chain are complete before a URN is issued to an ARC, i.e. the provider, the device and the ARC are all accredited to the appropriate part of the standard. This is partly in force now but will be fully in force by the end of July 2012. Implementation of the standard of course benefits the Police. But more importantly it also provides less tangible benefits for vulnerable

employees and their employers, concerning staff attitudes to their employer. It has been shown that employers who show proper concern for their at-risk staff can reduce staff absence through sickness and stress and improve staff retention. Because they feel safer with adequate precautions and training staff are more effective in implementing company policy in difficult situations. In addition such services have been shown to allow staff to work alone where in the past double manning has been required. Additional services provided by some service providers, based on Lone Worker devices, provide real benefit to the issue of staff management.
Expert guidance The development of British Standard BS8484, a Code of Practice for the provision of Lone Worker Services, has been a key element of the security industry’s work to create such solutions. BS8484 is employed by all BSIA members in the field and forms the basis for police respond to lone worker systems. The BSIA has also published two associated guides, which provide both employers and lone workers
themselves easy-to-follow advice. ‘Lone Workers – An Employer’s Guide’ informs employers about and what to look for when sourcing a supplier. The guide covers the employers’ responsibilities to its lone workers, as well as specific criteria for selecting technology, monitoring services and providers, including the possession of quality management systems such as ISO 9001 and the delivery of appropriate training. ‘Lone Workers – An Employers Guide’ can be downloaded free by visiting http://www.bsia.co.uk/publications, and searching for form number 288. For employees whose role requires them to work alone, the BSIA has produced a separate guide, ‘Lone Workers – An Employee’s Guide’, which can be downloaded free by visiting the BSIA’s website and searching for form number 284. To find out more about the BSIA and the work of its members, or to find a reputable supplier of lone worker devices near you, visit the Association’s website at www.bsia. co.uk

wireless security
Independence day Leon Langlais examines the growing area of wireless security
W
ireless security systems for the residential and small commercial market is an important part of the security industry, providing installers with the freedom to install an alarm system without wires. This independence from cabling results in lower installation times and allows them access to a larger base of customers when compared with their traditional hard-wired focused counterparts. Undoubtedly, wireless security systems have come a long way since their first introduction more than 40 years ago, moving from being thought of as an unreliable and difficult-to-install solution by security professionals to becoming recognised as reliable, cost effective and easy to install. Add to that the introduction of hybrid wireless systems, which enable security dealers to fully leverage the benefits of both systems, and installers can tap into the best of both worlds.
40 I February 2012 I IN Security
The rapid evolution of these technologies in recent years have led industry analysts IMS Research to estimate that by 2015, wireless panels will make up about nearly 35 percent of the global intrusion market, growing by a rate of more than five percent each year. Hybrid intrusion systems, where a hardwire panel is paired with wireless sensors and detectors, is predicted to make up the remainder of the market. These statistics show that wireless intrusion technology is one of the major driving forces in the market today.
Installation benefits Everyone in the security industry is familiar with the installation benefits a wireless security system provides to the security dealer. Wireless brings to mind the freedom to mount a device at nearly any wall or ceiling location. This is especially important in older homes and buildings in certain geographic locations where installing a wired
alarm system could involve drilling through stucco walls or concrete cinderblocks to run wires for a physical connection for the alarm system components. For the homeowner and installer alike, drilling holes can prove a costly proposition. Repairs that have to be made to damaged walls and the additional time it would take for the installer to run wires can quickly add unnecessary expense to the project. Wireless alarm components can also be installed in the most optimal location for operating the system, and not solely dictated by where the wires are located. For example, if a homeowner can locate a keypad beside the bed so that they can arm the system from their bedroom when they go to sleep. Wireless also provides greater flexibility should a homeowner want to install an alarm system on a detached garage or other outbuilding, such as a pool house, enabling the security dealer to
Many systems on the market today offer a method to test the signal strength of the wireless device to ensure it is placed in a good location
wirelessly connect the system from one building on a single property with the main house. Using wireless can also enable wireless outdoor perimeter detection to be provided without additional underground cabling. Beyond the placement flexibility that a wireless system provides, security dealers also need to recognise the important role of placement testing. Many systems on the market today offer a method to test the signal strength of the wireless device to ensure it is placed in a good location. This capability can come in the form of a testing function built into the keypad or other device that is part of the overall wireless security system. It works like this: the security dealer would walk around a home with the keypad or a passive infrared detector in hand. That device would indicate either on the LCD display or by a flashing light
that the wireless signal strength from that location to the control panel is strong. Without this capability, it would mean a security dealer would have to go back and forth from the panel to set up each wireless device, especially if the control panel doesn’t recognise the device because it was not placed in a good location. A worst-case scenario would require the security dealer to return to the property for a service call because the panel stops recognizing the devices all together. Another quick installation feature of some wireless solutions is quick enrollment, which enables the security dealer to set the keypad in auto-detection mode to discover each device and know what it is. The system will automatically grab the serial number and communicate with the control panel what kind of device it is, greatly reducing the time to program the overall wireless security system.
Range and reliability Some security dealers still remain apprehensive about wireless security systems, favoring a hardwired system and the time and financial investment it takes to pull wires for that type of installation. They wonder if wireless will really work and provide the customer with a reliable alarm system that they demand. Most homes and small businesses have a footprint of less than 500 square meters, meaning that wireless range and reliability concerns are not factors for today’s wireless alarm system, which is designed to handle dwellings of that size. The radio broadcast signals of these systems can pass through walls, ensuring that all devices are able to communicate with one another. One fact that few security dealers recognise is that many wireless alarm systems are less likely to need unscheduled service >
IN Security I February 2012 I 41
“the wireless technologies of today are being developed with encryption technologies to ensure that the wireless protocol can’t be sniffed and hacked”
than their wired counterparts. Part of that is because the longer the battery life in the alarm system and accessories, the fewer calls for service. For example, the battery life of a wireless passive infrared sensor can be 3 to 5 years, with new technologies coming down the pike that extend that term to 5 to 8 years. Although the wireless residential alarm market has moved past these specific concerns, a new round of questions have come to light as wireless alarm systems begin to enter the commercial security market on a regular basis. On the commercial side, wireless alarm systems are beginning to make inroads for many of the same basic advantages realised in the residential market. Pulling large amounts of wire to connect each door and window contact, motion detector and glassbreak sensor can prove expensive. Because of varied dynamics of commercial properties, such as the hundreds of square meters to cover, existing radio-frequency noise from a wide variety of equipment and the influence of buildings materials on RF signals, wireless installations in this environment often require wireless repeaters to ensure the RF signal can travel from the wireless
42 I February 2012 I IN Security
device to the control panel. Additionally, the wireless technologies of today are being developed with encryption technologies to ensure that the wireless protocol can’t be sniffed and hacked. This will conquer yet another hurdle to widespread adoption in the commercial market, where security concerns and questions about range are paramount to both end users and installers.
2-way vs. 1-way Another significant development in the wireless alarm systems space is 2-way wireless communication. When it was introduced, people either recognised the value of this innovative approach or they viewed it as too expensive to incorporate into products. Today, as more installers see the overall value of wireless alarm systems and replace hardwired systems, a real need has developed in the security market for smart, 2-way wireless communication systems. With 2-way wireless, the control panel and remote devices bi-directionally communicate with each other, essentially working like a phone conversation where the devices are able to pass information back and forth.
It should be noted that 1-way communication does not provide that bi-directional path, instead providing constant communication with the control panel about the status of the alarm system. It’s critical to know the health or connection status of wireless sensors or other devices, which is a benefit of 2-way wireless communication. Two-way wireless offers other automation capabilities, such as the constant communication between devices and remote arming and disarming using a keyfob. With 2-way, when the user presses a button on the keyfob to arm the alarm system, the panel can go back to the keyfob and tell it that it received that message and display that information on the keyfob’s graphical display. This would not be possible without 2-way wireless communication technology.
A look ahead Wireless alarm systems have come a long way in a few short years. The systems have continued to make inroads in the security market as a cost effective, easy to install solution with growing benefits for the residential and commercial market. The proof is in the market data, showing a growing demand for wireless alarm systems in the coming years. Security installers should expect more technological advancements relating to wireless alarm systems, with greater range, reliability, and the incorporation of 2-way wireless communication. Together these factors place the security dealer in the driver’s seat, to provide the tools to install the best wireless alarm systems possible for each customer.

Speed kings Barco improves the Formula One experience for race controllers and the media alike

hat would Giuseppe Farino, winner of the first Formula One championship in Silverstone (UK) in 1950, think if he stood on the circuits where Vettel is now defending his crown of FIA Formula One World Champion? Formula One racing has become really big business, and the most recent race circuits are bafflingly hi-tech. When Alonso, Massa, Webber, Button and Hamilton are racing in Abu Dhabi, Korea, Delhi or Bahrain, officials are following their moves on super-sized video walls in the race control centres, while journalists enjoy the images on large screens in the media areas. One of the starring brands behind the four new-style circuits is Barco. The Bahrain International Circuit was the very first official FIA Formula One circuit to be built in the Middle East. Other recent additions to the FIA calendar are the races in
Abu Dhabi (2009), Korea (2010) and Delhi, India (2011). All four races take place on circuits considered to be architectural gems, featuring the most advanced technology. System integrator PKE, who both boast many references in
motorsports, equipped the new circuits with state-of-the-art technology. According to Gernot Froestl, Managing Director, PKE Gulf: “When we heard about a tender for a new circuit in Abu Dhabi, we brainstormed how we could help racing circuits create an exciting – and safe – motorsport experience.” They came up with the idea to install video walls at the race control centres and the media centre instead of small monitors. “Many media centres feature single monitors hanging from the ceiling. Not really aesthetic. Besides, this set-up restricted the use of the centre. An attractive room with a video wall can be rented out for meetings, seminars and any other events, thus generating extra income,” Froestl continued. Barco was the preferred technology for the new concept. Said Froestl: “Our business partners have been installing Barco >

solutions for over ten years now and is confident they are the highestquality solutions on the market. In addition, Barco ensures continuity: it’s a reliable, sound business with branches worldwide so we’re sure to have spare parts available for many years to come. Last but not least, Barco’s local teams are always ready to help.” PKE travelled to Abu Dhabi to demonstrate their concept to advisors to the Crown Prince. “They insisted on only the highest standards, which we could offer,” Froestl recalled. In 2009, Barco installed three OV-508 video walls (2x2; 5x3 and 2x2) in the brand new race control centre. The media centre features three OV-808 (5x2) rear-projection systems. Both solutions ensure outstanding picture quality,
46 I February 2012 I IN Security
reliability and ease of use. The advanced Barco Transform A controller and control room management software, for their part, allow of easy display wall management, content sharing and collaboration. PKE further supplied a wireless touch panel to control the video wall settings – just like the lights, the curtains, etc. Barco took care of its integration.
Four new circuits Other new race circuits soon followed the example of Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit. In 2010, PKE furnished the race control center of the Korea International Circuit (OV-508 in a 5x3 set-up) and refurbished that in Bahrain with LCD displays. The company is currently finishing the installation of six rear-projection systems at the brand-new Delhi
circuit. “For Bahrain we chose NSL-4601 displays with WXGA resolution. They require less space, maintenance and power consumption while ensuring a great contrast ratio and exceptional brightness,” said Froestl. So when World Champion Vettel is racing in Abu Dhabi, Korea, Bahrain or Delhi, race controllers can follow him – and keep watch on the spectators – in real time, on a large video wall that provides images from all the CCTV cameras along the track. The operators can easily configure the screen, zoom in or change a viewpoint. In this way, they can detect problems quickly and take the appropriate action. In Abu Dhabi and India, the press gathers in large media centres, where they are spoiled with the highest quality images, on a large screen. n
