Class act Paxton’s Net2 Entry Secures the Safety of Children at Chalkwell Hall Junior School Chalkwell Hall Junior School is a large community school in Southend-on-Sea. Established in 1908 and educating 420 pupils aged 7 to 11, the school has a key role in the local area. As a large school, it became increasingly important to ensure safeguarding and control the flow of children around the building. In June 2012, Dave Sowerbutts, Building Surveyor from Southend Borough Council, headed up a refurbishment project to increase security for the school and modernise the reception area. Dave involved Blake Fire and Security to install an access control system to make the building secure for children and staff. Site requirements: • Reception to see pupils and visitors before granting access through the playground and side entrance • Secure six internal doors

surrounding the reception area • Only authorised people to access the main school Blake Fire and Security installed Paxton’s Net2 Entry, a video/ audio door entry system, to enable reception staff to see pupils and visitors before they grant entry to the building. The Net2 Entry monitor is desk-mounted in reception with two external Net2 Entry panels at the playground and side entrances. Children and parents press the bell button on the robust panel, the reception staff can then grant or deny them access, giving them complete control over who is in the building at any time. Matthew Finch, Access Control Manager at Blake Fire and Security, says: “The school needed a door entry system that was simple to use, but would integrate with access control. As regular installers of Paxton, we were aware

of the new Net2 Entry and knew that it easily integrates with Net2. We decided to try it and it’s worked brilliantly!” They installed Net2, Paxton’s leading networked access control system alongside the Net2 Entry system. Net2 electronically controls six internal doors securing the reception area, meaning that the main area of the school can’t be accessed without permission. Trudi Manicom, School Business Manager at Chalkwell Hall, says: “Net2 Entry is so easy to use. It’s useful for reception staff to be able to see who is trying to enter before letting them in. We have peace of mind that the children are safe and only authorised people are in the building at all times.” Net2 Entry is now vandal resistant and SIP compatible from 2nd September, meaning installers can offer super tough door entry to sites where vandalism is an issue.


The Net2 Entry Vandal Resistant Panel is made from marine grade stainless steel with a toughened polycarbonate screen. The corrosion resistant IK09 rating and waterproof IP55 rating means it will stand up to abuse and endure the test of time. The full colour video door entry system includes Net2 access control and with just three components is simple to install and administer. IP and PoE technology mean expansion for larger sites is easy and quick. With SIP compatibility, customers will be able to answer calls from their Net2 Entry panel from any SIP enabled device such as smartphone, PC or tablet. >

Y3K teams up with newly promoted Premier League team Crystal Palace

roydon, UK, 10th July 2013. Samsung Techwin and IProNet announce technology partnership The professional security division of Samsung Techwin and IProNet Sistemas have announced that they have formed a technology partnership which will see the two companies collaborating in the development of an integrated solution, employing Video Surveillance as a Service (VSaaS). VSaaS is a video management system that works via the Cloud without the need of locally installed hardware or software. Camera installation is plug-and-play, which means that the camera automatically connects to the service, reducing

costs and complexity. The end-user only needs a Samsung camera and an Internet connection. The alliance between Samsung Techwin and IProNet Sistemas will allow the possibility of accessing video captured from any IPNP powered Samsung device being hosted in the Cloud application. This fully featured platform and product combination can be offered to corporate partners as a white branded service, enabling Telcos as well as traditional intruder alarm installers, suppliers and distributors, access to a new recurring business model with an attractive value added service for the end user. This alternative will impact processes of video surveillance monitoring and management not only for the industrial and business sectors, but also for smaller enterprises and the general market. Users of the service will have the possibility of viewing the cameras’ feed in the Cloud through the web, smart phones, tablets and TV applications. Through the expansion of “video services in the Cloud”, both companies will enhance their range of solutions as VSaaS technology, based on the IProNet Video Internet Platform (VIP), will complement Samsung Techwin’s IP cameras capabilities. Raytec asked all unsuspecting visitors of IFSEC 2013, ‘Have you ever wondered what you look like under Infra-Red?’, then invited them into their IR

The Android solution was launched in March 2012, after a survey was conducted using a sample audience of 30,000 lone workers who use a lone worker solution. But I guess there is a serious message too – that to deliver good quality pictures in low light, even with the very best cameras, requires good quality lighting.” During the course of the show, Raytec took over 220 pictures in their IR photo booth, proving what a great success it was.

VDT Direct’s new DVRs incorporate a highly intuitive user interface and support VGA and BNC outputs with up to 724 x 576 recording resolution. Europa ranked in the top 5% of security companies after receiving nsi gold medal Europa has been recognised for its commitment to working to the highest security standards after being presented with a prestigious Guarding Gold medal by the National Security Inspectorate (NSI). As a result, the Salford-based integrated services provider is now within the top 5% of UK companies operating under the scheme. The uniquely numbered medal was presented to Europa by NSI Chief Executive, Jeff Little and is awarded to companies which have achieved Guarding Gold approval, the premier scheme for companies involved in the provision of manned security services in the UK. Allcooper engineers perfect skills with new training facility Independent fire and security specialists Allcooper have been busy making changes over the past few months, transforming their old engineers’ room into a brand new training facility at the firm’s headquarters in Gloucester. The new facility has been introduced as part of the company’s continuous improvement programme and is fitted with working examples from the existing product range including intruder, CCTV and access control systems. Working examples have been provided by a number of the company’s suppliers and will be used for demonstrations and training tasks such as programming, testing and maintenance. Intruder systems on display include products from HKC, Honeywell and Texecom, whilst a variety of CCTV

companies comply with the appropriate British and European Standards and meet the requirements of the police and insurers. Companies are inspected regularly for their continuous delivery of the highest standards to their customers. Engineers and apprentices gave up their own time to equip the new facility, which they believe will bring many benefits to the company in years to come. Installations team leader Paul McAvoy said: “The new training room is something we had in mind for a while but finding the time during working hours was difficult. For engineers and apprentices to give up their own time to work on the room just demonstrates how committed they are to their jobs, and how much they value the skills they stand to gain through individual and group training.” n

Mitsubishi Electric embraces new browser-based access control technology Mitsubishi Electric’s Air Conditioning Division based in Livingston, Scotland has deployed Grosvenor Technology’s new SATEON browser-based access control system as part of a major security upgrade. Founded in 1993, the company known today as Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioning Systems Europe Ltd, is a recognised world leader in the manufacture of air conditioning and heat pump systems. As a business it is therefore keen to use leading-edge technology in all parts of its own building systems. SATEON is 100% browser-based and powered by the latest web streaming technology to deliver a slick and graphically rich user interface through the user’s preferred browser. There is no limit to client-licenses, allowing Mitsubishi Electric to have as many operators as required with access to the system, at no additional cost. Flying high Tyco integrates access control, surveillance and security systems

ewfoundland & Labrador based commercial s service provider Cougar Helicopters doesn’t take safety and security lightly. Operating a helicopter service in the midst of some of the world’s most challenging weather has developed several strengths in Cougar Helicopters. Proactive safety, flexibility and innovation have become watchwords for Cougar’s highly experienced team of flight crew, aircraft maintenance engineers, rescue specialists and support staff. These strengths have come into play in support of Canada’s first offshore oil production and in pioneering new methods and equipment for marine search and rescue (SAR). Every new contract

is a challenge to do old things new ways – to continually improve every standard and every area of our service – always with a safety-first approach. Incorporated in 1984 in Nova Scotia, Cougar Helicopters commenced operations shuttling passengers between the airport and downtown Halifax. A lot has changed since that time. The company entered the offshore oil and gas industry in 1990 with a support contract in Gijon, Spain, and later that same year returned to Nova Scotia to begin flying for the oil industry in Atlantic Canada. With the signing of the Hibernia Management & Development Corporation (HMDC) contract in 1995, operations began off the coast of Newfoundland & Labrador. Shortly thereafter construction

began on Cougar’s new corporate headquarters with a 37,000 square foot passenger handling facility and hangar at St. John’s International Airport. In 2010 Cougar constructed a similar 28,000 square-foot heliport in Halifax to support its offshore oil and gas customers in Nova Scotia and most recently in 2012, construction was completed on a 27,000 square-foot built-forpurpose Search & Rescue (SAR) facility also located at St. John’s International Airport. Beyond ensuring in-flight safety while successfully transporting hundreds of offshore oil and gas workers each year, all of whom must wear a special helicopter coldwater immersion suit, Cougar needed to ensure security for its new facility in Halifax and its SAR facility in St. John’s while ensuring


complete network capability with its headquarters. Cougar’s facilities needed to follow Transport Canada Aviation Regulations, which details security requirements for airports frequented by the general public.

The Challenge As Cougar embarked on building its new terminal in Halifax, company officials knew they had to take a top-notch approach with its security. The facility would ultimately house a helicopter hangar and a passenger screening and boarding area within a single structure. In addition, the terminal would also include a pilot lounge and an office for Cougar Helicopters’ employees, similar to that of its corporate headquarters facility in St. John’s. Paramount to the newly constructed terminal in Halifax and the SAR facility in St. John’s was the requirement to network the location with the Operational Control Center (OCC) located within the corporate headquarters. The OCC dispatches and follows all of Cougar’s aircraft throughout the world and provides oversight for all of its security operations.

Cougar Helicopters relied on the expertise of systems integrator Northeastern Protection Service Inc., in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and started working with the integrator during the blueprint stage of the project. This approach enabled Northeastern Protection and Cougar Helicopters to collaborate on the design and implementation of an IP-based surveillance system and an access control system that fully integrates with the building’s intrusion system. “Starting from scratch gave us the flexibility to efficiently implement the different security systems we needed,” said Richard Dawe, Information Systems Manager for Cougar Helicopters. “The design of the system wasn’t inhibited by drywall being up or ceilings being intact. And, we weren’t tearing out walls and moving doors.” Roger Miller, Vice President of Operations for Northeastern Protection, and Bryan Robinson, Technical Services Manager, for Northeastern Protection, worked closely with Cougar Helicopters to design and install the security

system at both its new Halifax location and the SAR building. “Integration was critical to this project,” said Miller. “Cougar Helicopters wanted to manage their access control, surveillance and security system through a single interface.” To accomplish a truly integrated, network-based system, Cougar Helicopters’ IT department and Northeastern Protection had to implement an independent and parallel LAN network for both Halifax and the SAR building in St. John’s to eliminate concerns of bandwidth issues and to identify IP addresses for its IP surveillance cameras. The project took planning and communication between both organizations, including the commitment of Cougar Helicopters to provide two IT people onsite during the critical installation portion of the project. “We had to work closely with the IT department because they were responsible for obtaining the static IP address, making sure the ports were open, and limiting access of the security system from other parties on the network,” said Robinson.

The Solutions To take an integrated approach, Cougar Helicopters selected several solutions from Tyco Security Products, with the Kantech EntraPass Corporate Edition software as its security management platform. The network and web-ready security management system fully integrates with the other security systems installed in the Cougar Helicopters’ terminal, including an HDVR Hybrid Video Recorder from American Dynamics and a DSC PowerSeries Alarm Panel for the intrusion system. The capabilities of EntraPass allow Cougar Helicopters to integrate its access control data with both its video and intrusion systems. As a result, EntraPass can search events that have been >

generated by the DSC PowerSeries system. This functionality provides their IT department in St. John’s with the ability to gather this data from one workstation without going to multiple sources. The speed, accuracy and ease of use create a very efficient investigation process. “The foundation provided by the Kantech EntraPass system in Halifax can carry Cougar Helicopters through any new building project they do elsewhere,” said Miller. “They don’t need to buy new software to add another facility or to expand the capabilities of the current system.” In addition, Kantech EntraPass, coupled with KT400 door controllers manages access for controlled entry points, such as the hangar, pilot’s lounge and general entry into the Halifax facility and new SAR building. Cougar Helicopters recently added a new functionality to its system to provide added safety measures for employees. As an employee enters a designated area in either the Halifax building or SAR facility, the EntraPass system is programmed to begin a countdown process, so if an employee does not exit within a specified time frame the system generates an alarm to create a response process ensuring the employees are protected at all times. The surveillance system took a hybrid approach, with 16 analog ports on the DVR and 8 IP ports. The Kantech EntraPass Corporate Edition software is providing the interface with both the video and access control system. This approach enables the facility to add more analog or IP megapixel cameras as needed. By integrating an HDVR hybrid video recorder with EntraPass, select personnel for Cougar Helicopters can receive a video clip by email each time someone presents their proximity

card to enter the facility. For Cougar Helicopters, an integrated and networked surveillance system goes beyond security to enable it to manage dayto-day business activities. “Management wants to see where our aircraft are all the time; with our remote monitoring video system, we can view the hangar from anywhere in the world,” said Dawe, from Cougar Helicopters. “We can look at the activity in the building in Halifax, St. John’s and pilots can see all that the passengers are ready to go and they have their suits on, and they can have an eye on the activity of the building.” The cameras also provide operational efficiencies at the facility level. The pilot’s lounges at Cougar Helicopters’ facilities are equipped with a large video screen that enables pilots to remotely view the hangar and see their helicopters being rolled out onto the ramp and prepared for flight. The advantages of remote access are not limited to the video portions of the system. Having the ability to control and manage doors from a central location through the Kantech EntraPass system also provides Cougar with operational advantages. “We can lock down the building, we can open up doors and manage it remotely,” Dawe explained. “We always have someone who can

take control because we have an IT team in St. John’s to manage our facilities.” At the newly built SAR facility in St. John’s, Cougar incorporated the Kantech integration platform installed in Halifax. Following the standard developed for Halifax the SAR facility became an added site on Kantech EntraPass, which allows it to be managed from the same IT infrastructure.

The Future With its operations continuing to grow, Cougar Helicopters has the capabilities now to update its security company-wide thanks to the work of Northeastern Protection and the Kantech EntraPass platform. “We were excited to have been the integrator for their initial requirement in Halifax with Cougar Helicopters. And, we have been equally excited about expanding our relationship with Cougar as they have continued to grow,” said Miller. “We knew when we installed the Kantech EntraPass system it would enable them to adjust to their growing security needs.” n



CELLULAR SECURITY

Safe and secure Cellular networks are not secure unless they are private and managed, full-stop By Steve Boyd Director of Network Engineering, Wyless

W

e’ve seen it with police cars, industrial devices and emergency notification systems how cellular modems and routers and the devices sitting behind them get hacked, ’pwned’ (owned), and rooted. With everyone and their brother focused primarily on security nowadays, how could this possibly happen? The answer is typically very simple. The device manufacturer makes a solid, capable device that can be locked down very tightly - but the installer needs to actually do it. The inexperienced or overloaded technical person gets the device set up - but doesn’t get around to locking it down. The software supplier pushes out an update for the device including a few new features or services - but

leaves those services in their default configuration, creating exploitable holes that the device owner isn’t even aware of. Because the device is directly exposed to the internet, any vulnerability on the device is instantly exposed to anyone on the planet with an internet connection. The old defense of “security through obscurity”, or appearing nondescript and unimportant enough to avoid close scrutiny, no longer applies when automated scanners like “Shodan” look at every internetfacing device and distill the findings in a way that someone with malicious intent but relatively little technical knowledge can use to focus their own automated attacks and penetrations. And to add insult to injury, the device’s owner has to pay for the bandwidth used by the Shodan scanner (and

every other automated scanner on the internet) and the hacker while compromising their device! In fact, even if the device’s firewall is correctly configured and the device is totally locked down, the data going from the internet to the device is still billable, because whether the device is using it or ignoring it, it is still going from the cell tower to the device. The fix for this has been around for a while, and in fact was Wyless’ original selling point: To provide SIMs with Private Fixed IP addresses and a Management Platform to provide real-time visibility of the SIM. We started it with our original four private Wyless APNs (Access Point Name) prior to 2008, and it is still the foundation of our product in 2013 as we launch our 27th private Wyless APN. By giving each device


a private static IP and keeping them behind an enterprise-class firewall, devices maintain unfettered access to the internet while preventing hosts on the internet from initiating communications to the devices. This baseline layer of defense immediately prevents the sort of internet portscanning that readily reveals any weakness to prospective hackers, along with the actual exploitations of open ports and factory-default passwords. Of course, it also prevents legitimate users from getting to their own devices via the internet. Naturally, we need to provide a way for authorized users and services to access the devices remotely over the internet, and we’ve done that by offering PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol)”dial-up” and IPsec (IP Security) “site-to-site” (Virtual Private Networks) VPNs. With PPTP , individual users or servers can initiate a VPN and traffic to the devices no matter what their own internet connectivity on the fly. With

IPsec, one or more customer sites can be linked to the devices with a private connection that is effectively up 24/7/365. I’ve been on innumerable presales engineering calls where the prospective customer has insisted that they require public IP addresses, and the only question they have for me is whether we offer static IPs, or support DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name System) with the dynamic IPs. It’s probably the most satisfying part of my job to explain to them about our private IP connectivity options, which typically not only are more effective and less expensive (no unsolicited bandwidth from those automated internet scans) for them, but also vastly more secure. This “protection from the internet by default” has been sufficient for smaller organizations with relatively simple connectivity requirements. However, larger organizations or customers requiring more security outbound from the device were also being accommodated. Someone

pulling out a SIM and plugging it into their own cellular device would at the least need to know what the private APN name is, and we have long been able to add explicit username/ password verification. However more recently, we’ve implemented IP whitelisting. What this does is allow data from the device to only reach customer-allowed destinations, and blocks any IPs that are not specifically on the list. The thief that has stolen the SIM, or stolen or hacked into the device cannot use it for general internet access at all and the corporate core that the device connects to can be fairly easily routed through a DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone), which is a firewall configuration , which will prevent a compromised device from being a backdoor into the corporate network. Now we’re using “default-gateway” IPsec tunnels or encapsulating GRE (General Routing Encapsulation) tunnels through the traditional IPsec tunnels, in order to direct ALL >

device-initiated traffic down the tunnel toward the customer’s network. The customer therefore can monitor/filter/block the cellular traffic using their own network filtering and protocols, effectively bringing the device behind the protection of the core network. In addition to the protection of the Wyless firewall, the device now gets the protection of the customer’s firewall as well. And, this protection is in place no matter what someone does to the device in the field - it either routes all traffic to/from the customer network, or it doesn’t route any traffic over any cellular network at all. It is really a neat solution to the expanding BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) issue, from a cellular data standpoint. The two most recent common customer connectivity needs we’ve seen are also protected by this architecture – one layout has been customers that have MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) -connected networks connecting one of our datacenters as a node on their MPLS which effectively

pulls all their cellular connections onto that MPLS network. Other customers use the traditional Wyless connectivity options as a backup to the MPLS circuits; with end-to-end GRE available and dynamic routing protocols running across them, cellular makes for an excellent (and of course secure) backup path. To ensure that we met our customer’s requirements and the increasing market demand market for computing infrastructure to move into the cloud, we have implemented our own cloud connectivity. See Fig 1. We are now able to build secure network connectivity between any of the global MNO connections we offer and Amazon AWS and other cloud hosts. We have added a dedicated infrastructure devoted strictly to the cloud connectivity. In my opinion, the greatest practical element among our various secure options is that not only is every option available for every one of the fifteen-or-so production MNO connections that we offer, but the connections are all pulled in and

piped through one of three Wyless primary hubs (one for the Americas and AsiaPac, one for the UK and northern Europe, and one for central/ southern Europe and Africa) which reduces the difference between MNOs to mere subnet routing; see Fig 2. Don’t lose focus Multifocal Sensor Systems

T

he technological advances that have been made in the field of network-based surveillance in the last few years are astounding. High Definition and megapixel cameras were introduced onto the market and the question arose: Which are more suitable for professional video surveillance, HD cameras or megapixel cameras? But since then, even that discussion is already outdated: A new technology, known as multifocal sensor technology, has taken the market by storm and is paving the way for a whole range of hitherto inconceivable surveillance and analysis capabilities. When the first HD and megapixel cameras were launched onto the market a few years ago, they were clearly superior to the predecessor SD cameras, with much higher resolutions. HD cameras are impressive because

of a technology that is derived from the field of video – that is to say relating to moving images. On the other hand, the roots of megapixel technology are in the field of static photography, even though they can reach higher pixel values than are possible with HD cameras. But before any discussions begin as to whether HD or megapixel cameras are more suitable for modern surveillance tasks, one point must be considered: Resolution on its own is not everything. In order to be able to use the images from surveillance cameras efficiently and analyse them successfully, other dimensions besides resolution are important, such as effective image breakdown, recording of the overall image or analysis in the past. Whereas both HD and megapixel cameras very soon reach the limits of their capabilities in these areas, a new technology, multifocal sensor

technology, performs flawlessly. Unlike HD and megapixel cameras, which are equipped with a single lens, the multifocal sensor systems work with several lenses, each of which has a different focal length. Thanks to this new sensor concept, the camera can be adapted optimally to the area for surveillance, so details are still clearly visible, not only close up but also at very long distances, and individuals can be recognised. However, that is not the only way it stands apart from conventional cameras.

Efficient image breakdown One of the main arguments advanced by the defenders of High Definition cameras is that HD uses the widescreen format with an aspect ratio of 16:9 compared with the 4:3 format of the megapixel cameras. This corresponds more closely to the human field of vision,


With multifocal sensor systems the aspect ratio can be adapted to the situation at hand, without being locked to given formats as 16:9 or 4:3 With multifocal sensor systems all PTZ functions like panning and zooming are even available subsequently in the recording and makes it possible to record yet more information laterally as well. But real scenes seldom correspond to either of these two formats. However, in order to cover all areas of interest, it is often accepted that unimportant expanses, such as the sky, will be captured as well. In this case, pixels and the recording and storage capacity they take up are all wasted needlessly. But there is a more elegant solution: instead of forcing a scene for surveillance into a given format, with multifocal sensor systems there are no rigid, preset aspect ratios. They adapt the pixel ratio to the situation at hand! The image is split efficiently without being locked into specific aspect ratios such as 16:9 or 4:3. Thus for example aspect ratios like 5:1, 10:1 or 3:4 can be used without any difficulty.

Constant resolution over the entire object space It is true that HD and megapixel cameras use progressive resolution options, but they quickly reach their limits precisely when it

is important to be able to recognise details even at long distances. “Movies or television series like CSI often suggest to viewers that even blurry pictures can be transformed into high-quality police wanted posters with just a few clicks”, explains Roland Meier, Team Leader Panomera® Multifocal Sensor Systems at Dallmeier. “But pixels are still just pixels: if there is no additional image information present, for example because an HD or MP camera only represents a person at a distance of 50 m with a collection of coarse blocks, this information also cannot be “conjured out of thin air” after the fact. So you are aware that something is happening here, but it is completely impossible to even recognise, much less identify a person. And that is precisely the objective of a professional video system.” So in order to obtain the desired information, in the past multiple cameras had to be installed at different locations. But this in turn involves higher costs: The appropriate cabling for power supply and

data transmission is needed at every individual installation site, so the infrastructure costs and subsequent maintenance costs for multiple camera sites are enormous. This is where the new multifocal sensor technology can help, since the resolution it offers is currently equivalent to about 32 times greater than a conventional HD camera. It can be used from just a single installation point to provide surveillance of a huge area. “With conventional cameras, the resolution drops off as distance increases. Or to put it another way: The farther a person or object is away from the camera location, the poorer the resolution is there, so you are able to make out fewer details. In contrast, a multifocal sensor system uses different lenses, so constant resolution can be guaranteed over the entire area under surveillance. So the resolution at 100 m is exactly as good as it is at 20 m. This makes it possible to recognise people for example even from 160 m”, declares Roland Meier. >

Permanent recording of the total picture in highest resolution Those who have no desire to install multiple conventional cameras over the area in question, as described previously, can use “PTZ” cameras. As their name suggests, these cameras can “Pan, Tilt and Zoom”. So in theory it would be possible to use these cameras to watch over a relatively large area and to pan or zoom to a location of interest if the need arises. But PTZ cameras do have one critical disadvantage: They only ever record what the operator is currently seeing live. So if the user zooms in on a certain scene, it is only this scene that will be recorded. Any additional incidents in the viewing range of the PTZ camera are lost and cannot be analysed or proven subsequently. Accordingly, the surveillance system is only as good as the user who is operating it. In contrast, a multifocal sensor system always delivers total performance, since the whole picture (“permanent and overall”) is constantly recorded in highest resolution. “Those are three important points straight away: the whole picture is recorded, so no areas are lost, even if the operator is currently concentrating on a smaller inset. This total picture

is recorded all the time, so there are no gaps in time. And finally: the recording takes place in the highest resolution, so no details are lost in the recording.” says Roland Meier . “Moreover, unlike PTZ cameras multifocal sensor systems do not have any mechanical parts, so there is no wear, which extends the equipment’s operating life significantly. And there is another advantage: Whereas with PTZ cameras only one operator can have control over the camera at a time, with the multifocal sensor system any number of users can connect to the camera and select their entirely individual views.” he adds.

Analysis in the past Seeing live images from the surveillance cameras is one thing – but with professional video security systems, most analyses take place in the past. This means: The video system runs, and if an incident should occur at a given time, the recordings are searched later in order to reconstruct the course of events and identify the individuals responsible. Consequently, it is an essential requirement of modern surveillance systems that they are also able to zoom or pan even in the recordings. With conventional

HD or MP equipment, this is not possible. “Even with PTZ cameras, these functions are only possible in live mode, not subsequently, in the recording. And if the operator is concentrating live on another area in the surveillance scene at the precise time, the entire incident will not be seen on the video images.” states Roland Meier. “So video surveillance becomes a game of chance in the truest sense of the word. For example, if you want to identify a car thief in a car park with a PTZ camera you would have had to zoom onto the car in question before the theft took place, in order to record the crime in adequate resolution. So how likely is it that you would just happen to catch someone in the act like that?” Here too, the solution is available with multifocal sensor systems, because all PTZ functions are fully available even in the past – even as the system continues recording images live. Roland Meier explains: “Since the overall image was recorded at the highest possible resolution, it is also possible to move within the image and to zoom in on pertinent details. London calling London calls IFSEC International to the Capital! IFSEC International waves farewell to the NEC after a show stopping year to start its next chapter at the ExCeL, London in 2014

FSEC International (www. ifsec.co.uk) took place at Birmingham’s NEC for the last time from 13 – 16 May 2013, as the flagship security exhibition prepares to relocate to ExCeL, London in 2014. Following a phenomenal 40th year, the show proved to be a roaring success with 28,992 visitors (subject to ABC audit) flooding through the doors of IFSEC and FIREX, an increase of 2.4 per cent on 2011. A three per cent visitor increase was seen across the whole Protection and Management Week, running alongside FIREX International, Facilities Show and Safety and Health Expo. Showcasing the latest product innovations, technologies, services and solutions applicable to this broad industry sector, IFSEC International demonstrated the increased integration between the security and fire industries. Uniting the entire buying chain under one roof, the event brought together 32 per cent end users and 68 per cent trade visitors, presenting endless networking options and the chance to take advantage of the breadth of education on offer. Charlie Cracknell, Event Director for IFSEC International, said: “On the back of our extensive market research, we have been able to deliver IFSEC 2013 which genuinely meets the needs of an evolving security market. Showcasing a broad range of innovation across the industry, hosting prestigious industry awards, identifying market educational demands with the

wide range of unique workshops and conference programmes have resulted in an uplift of total attendees.” IFSEC International listened to visitor feedback and significant focus was put on additional content alongside the show. The IFSEC Academy provided access to seven free education theatres allowing visitors to engage in the biggest issues in security from the industry’s leading lights. High level speakers including; Don Randall MBE (head of security at the Bank of England and Chairman of the City of London Crime Prevention Association), Balaji Srimoolanathan (principal consultant - Aerospace, Defence and Security at Frost & Sullivan), Dr Peter Speight (director of Security Risk Management at Securitas Security Services UK) and many more, took to the stage to discuss topics from counter terror

to lone workers, integrated security to IP and networks, intelligent buildings to access control and biometrics, CCTV and video surveillance to physical security. For the first time the Global Meetings Programme was set up to provide a platform for a bespoke and tailor-made hosted buyers’ programme, where manufacturers from the IFSEC International and FIREX International exhibitor base were brought together with end-user visitors in a seller:buyer environment. This proved to be an effective feature where both parties were able to hold targeted meetings and discuss their individual needs. Alan Moody, Managing Director, AWM Alarms confirmed that he recognises IFSEC International as the leading industry event: “It’s my 33rd year attending IFSEC and every year it fulfils expectations! I see a lot of my suppliers

he security industry is a fast paced and constantly developing sector, regularly making new technological advancements and consistently driving high quality standards. As such, it is important not to overlook the security professionals responsible for driving the industry forward and delivering the reputable services that are essential to UK society. Here, James Kelly, Chief Executive of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA), discusses the

importance of rewarding service excellence within the industry. Driving and maintaining high quality standards is a big priority within the security industry, and very much so for the BSIA. However, it is not just security products – such as locks and CCTV equipment – that should be meeting these standards, but personnel too.

Security Personnel Awards The security industry is full of high quality professionals that regularly go above and beyond

the call of duty in order to deliver an excellent service. However, in the midst of other high profile news, such good work can often go unnoticed by the public and industry at large. As such, every year, the BSIA hosts the Security Personnel Awards – at both a regional and national level – in order to recognise and reward individuals and teams that continue to exceed industry expectations year upon year. Security continues to play a vital role in safeguarding our nation, and it is exceptional security personnel that help to maintain

the industry’s favourable reputation. Security officers are the public face of our industry and the standards of professionalism that they embody is key to the development of fruitful customer relationships and growing customer trust in the security industry. It is always humbling to read through the nominations, reading stories of personnel who strive to deliver an exceptional service whether it be through additional contributions they make in their everyday roles or one truly outstanding act. The awards are presented in five categories: Service to the Customer, Outstanding Act, Best Newcomer, Best Use of Technology and Best Team. The standard of nominations has always been high since the awards were created 15 years ago, but this year in particular, the standard was exceptional,

reflected in the extremely high number of regional winners – 33 in total. Regional awards were presented earlier this year across eight main regions, with the 15 national winners receiving their accolades at the Association’s Annual Lunch on July 16th. To put the exceptional standard into perspective, take security newcomer Ethan Hanley, of VSG. After originally being interviewed for a controller’s position, Ethan was so impressive in the process that he was chosen for a supervisory role instead, heading up an extensive operation. Ethan was extremely dedicated to his new role, going out of his way to design work flows that would prove vital to the monitoring process. Consequently, his hard work, and that of his team, meant that the project was an amazing eight months ahead of schedule.

The three winners within the Outstanding Act category – Ahmed Akinjobi (Incentive Lynx Security), Michael Smyth (VSG) and Mark Cooper (Westgrove Group) – were all awarded for their quick thinking, intuition and heroic actions, which allowed them each to save a life while on duty. The Priory Shopping Centre Team, of SPS Security Limited, are another example of service excellence, making contributions to both the shopping centre where they work and their local community, helping to raise over £1000 for local and national charities and working with local police forces to help reduce recorded crime by 19%. Each of this year’s winners encompass the value of the security industry, demonstrating intelligent and innovative uses of technology, teamwork, unrivalled customer service and commendable acts of bravery. >

Securing the future Another area of our industry that should be recognised and encouraged is that of apprenticeships. In today’s challenging job market, many young people may feel that a long term career is out of their reach. As such, the development of apprenticeship schemes has become increasingly important. Apprenticeship schemes within the security industry offer positions to young people who wish to gain practical skills and knowledge in the security industry, allowing them to ultimately develop longterm careers in the sector. Well trained and proficient apprentices are also extremely beneficial to the future of the security industry; as high standards of training are provided from the outset. This high standard of training can aid in ‘securing the future’ of our industry, ensuring

that the next generation of security professionals meet the standards that today’s professionals have worked so hard to champion. The BSIA is proud to recognise the achievements of young apprentices through the Apprentice Installer Awards. The prestigious awards serve to recognise the achievements of Level Two and Level Three apprentices and represent the commitment of security companies and training bodies in providing young talent with the opportunity to succeed in the security industry. As with the Security Personnel Award, the calibre of this year’s nominations was so exceptional that the judges felt it impossible to choose between two outstanding individuals, and awarded two joint overall winners – Ryan Jenkins and Jack Finley. Both young apprentices have impressed their colleagues

and clients in their respective apprenticeships, regularly spending time outside of working hours reading industry publications and product manuals so they may be as knowledgeable in their roles as possible.
