Incedo™ Business will evolve towards total integration with its open API approach and will work alongside other non-security disciplines such as time & attendance and workflow management. The product has outstanding potential for franchise organizations in its Cloud version which allows

head office managers to add, remove and fine-tune whole sites effortlessly in a way that ensures uniformity of working practices across franchisees so ensuring that managers across a diverse geographical spread know exactly where their employees, contractors and visitors are at any time. Centralized compliance visibility and control via a single portal are vital for anybody working on this kind of business model. Stephanie Ordan, VP Digital and Access Solutions at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEA, said: “Agility and responsiveness are at the core of Incedo™ Business. Different people don’t just need their own combination of access times and entry points, their requirements and user privileges may well vary daily.” Agile response and optimized decisionmaking Stephanie continued: “Incedo™ Business enables managers to initiate, amend or cancel access around multiple premises in rea time. Our latest offering means customers can make the best possible decisions using the best possible information from both granular detail and site overviews.” The scope for optimizing safety, factoring out threats and reducing total cost of ownership (TCO) is unlimited. In a period of straitened

budgets, this revolutionary management system with its intuitive software interface maximizes return on investment. Easy management of people movements at a site, even one with a complex regime, produces significant economies and a heightening of protection for all. Evolving credential types ASSA ABLOY’s broad hardware offering includes wireless door locks (Aperio®), wired wall readers and digital cylinders. All future ASSA ABLOY releases will be compatible with Incedo™ Business from inception, and stakeholders right across the industry will benefit from a growing portfolio. This innovative management

platform is future-proof and will stay at the end-user’s side as market conditions change. It embodies flexibility and can be scaled both up and down effortlessly. ASSA ABLOY cannot accurately predict every precise industry change, but the R&D team has ensured that flexibility to adapt runs throughout the product suite. The development and launch are the response of an innovationdriven company to a fast-moving landscape in which doors are being required to be smarter, connectivity both simpler and more far-reaching, and access management more precise. Installation of Incedo™ Business is speedy, makes no great demands of the end-user and keeps disruption of core activities at the site to a minimum. This is an ideal option for any small-medium location such as schools, medical clinics, multioccupancy residences, retail outlets, fitness centres, leisure destinations and small or medium-sized hotels. It is both an indoor and outdoor solution extending to the widest range of entrances including every type of gate right up to agriculture and the transport sector. ASSA ABLOY conducts regular ‘voice of the customer’ (VOC) client surveys which have revealed that regardless of the industry, there are common expectations running across the

client and installer base. These include simplicity, transparency, visibility and single points of reference and command, all of which are embodied in the new release. Thomas Schulz, EMEA Product Marketing Director at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEA, said: “Incedo™ Business is an evolutionary step in access control based on our engagement with end users and responsiveness to market trends. Closeness to our user base is vital and we’re looking forward to reaching out to clients in a collaborative manner in order to develop special features and options for niche vertical sectors. The range of hardware from the ASSA ABLOY group and the scalability between the three management options of Incedo™ Business can be seen as a buffet or smörgåsbord in which the user comes away with the best fit and exact combination they require.” ASSA ABLOY will release ‘vertical’ sector-specific software add-ons as the product matures and feedback is received from endusers, installers and consultants. Versatility is crucial and third-party integration is a major goal as the product grows. ASSA ABLOY understands the benefit of cooperation and interoperability as well as any other manufacturer in the security sector and will always discuss value-added native integrations via an application programming interface (API). Striving for truly intelligent access control As the access control sector matures, the simple act of securing a door becomes a given. A safer world is one where access control is truly intelligent so allowing admin to be rationalized, making for time savings and faster responses. Customers are looking for solutions that will take the data from door usage and analyze it to produce useful output that will identify the trends that allow them to rationalize staff movements, site layout and working methods. ASSA ABLOY now offers robust data-enabled hardware that gathers information and the company will work with clients at reference sites to pioneer true data analysis so adding value. The initiative has been designed in line with the new UK government guidelines - ‘Working safely during COVID-19’. In a new, 45-minute webinar, Paxton will show installers how to match their security offering with the ‘practical considerations of how to operate safely in the workplace’. The UK manufacturer & market leader in access control is also launching a new release for Net2, specially developed to support social distancing. Like many installers right now, Paxton recognise they have an important role to play in helping companies across the country update their buildings and reopen their businesses safely and securely to support the economy. As a UK manufacturer with over 35 years expertise in securing buildings, the route for Paxton is always through educating their trusted network of security installers to deliver genuine solutions for the real world. Paxton’s recent round of webinars, across April & May have seen 2,700 installers attend. Gareth O’Hara Chief Sales Officer said: “As a manufacturer of technology, in partnership with installation companies we have an opportunity to positively contribute to protecting people against COVID-19. Access Control has a key role in helping ensure buildings are COVID-secure. At present, thousands of buildings across the country have to implement new measures to comply with the UK government guidelines. Right now business owners are working out how to safely transition people back to work. Our message to security installers is: Please do not wait. We want them to start to become familiar with the guidance and Net2 solutions and support their customers in making their buildings COVID-19 secure. From the webinar, the supporting technical information to the new Net2 release and free customer guide, we

Is “Made in Germany” and “Made in Europe” becoming more important? Dallmeier electronic, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of video security and video information technology, is currently conducting a survey on its website regarding the “Made in Germany” and “Made in Europe” seal of quality. End users and interested parties from various industries as well as partners, erectors and planners are warmly invited to take part

in this survey. As a consequence of the coronavirus crisis, a lot of businesses are currently considering many things from a different point of view – perhaps even more radically than when the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was passed into law two years ago. The relative merits of questions such as the manufacturer’s origin, faith in trading partners, stable supply chains, data protection and data security, and security in general are the subject of active and lively debate about solutions and products made in European countries. Dallmeier has therefore taken this opportunity to conduct a survey about the “Made in Germany” and “Made in Europe” seal of quality. At the beginning of July 2020, Dallmeier will publish the results of the survey in the form of a press release and on social networks. Those who wish to take part in the survey can visit https://www.dallmeier.com/survey

Salto smart access control delivers protection via BioCote® antimicrobial technology In the new normal, we’re all going to have to get used to doing things differently and hygiene is something that will play a greater part in all our lives. That’s why SALTO Systems, in partnership with BioCote® the market-leading antimicrobial technology supplier, has since 2011 incorporated antimicrobial silver ion technology in our electronic smart lock range, electronic cylinders, locker locks, and supporting devices such as wall readers. The addition of BioCote’s antimicrobial technology helps reduce microbes on door handles and improves hygiene in buildings creating a cleaner, more hygienic environment for both users and visitors. “The more hygienic the handle set, the less chance of cross-contamination. This helps to reduce the spread of microbes around a building as microbes are not transferred from door to door and surface to surface,” comments Aznar Sethna, CSMO SALTO Systems. “We have long seen and offered the benefit of having BioCote® added to our electronic lock products to contribute to customers existing cleaning and hygiene regimes.” BioCote® has successfully tested against a feline strain of coronavirus, showing a reduction of 90% in two hours, which is a positive indicator of the antiviral properties of their technology. Previous testing has revealed that BioCote® delivers 99.9 percent, 24/7 protection against an array of microbes including Influenza A H1N1, E.coli, Salmonella, and antibioticresistant CRE, VRE, and MRSA. BioCote® cannot be wiped or worn away and thus enhances hygiene management and reduces the possibility of crosscontamination. SALTO BioCote® antimicrobial protection consists of silver-ion technology which is integrated during the manufacturing process. SALTO added BioCote® as a standard additive for all the plastic devices it produces 10 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

as well as with the new XS4 Locker Lock BLE. SALTO also offers BioCote® as an option on its complete line of electronic locks and online wall readers. “Our findings continue to show the positive impact of having antimicrobial coatings on our smart-locking product range with regards to reducing levels of bacterial contamination. BioCote® silver ion technology significantly reduces the level of microbes on SALTO escutcheons and door handles by up to 99.99 percent which is an incredible achievement,” says Sethna. The finish of BioCote®-treated smart door lock hardware differs slightly from that of standard-finish escutcheons due to the mix of lacquer and silver ion particles. On wall readers, locker locks, and lock readers, it’s invisible. The finish is long-lasting and maintains its antimicrobial performance over the expected lifetime of the products. Current government guidelines recommend regular cleaning to minimize the spread of microbes in all types of building. However, beyond regular cleaning, little consideration has been given to alternate or non-traditional methods for limiting the potential for cross-contamination within a public environment. By effectively reducing a broad spectrum of microbes by up to 99.9 percent, BioCote® antimicrobial technology provides integrated and lasting hygienic protection that supports regular cleaning regimes and hand hygiene. “SALTO has been an innovative leader in electronic access control technology for two decades and we are just as proud to have been equally as advanced when it comes to the hygienic properties of our products with a leading partner like BioCote®,” said Sethna. SALTO has published a white paper that discusses the use of BioCote® antimicrobial technology.

New antibacterial keys help you stay hygienic If you take a moment to think about all the surfaces and objects that your keys touch, you may be reminded about just how many germs they actually pick up and carry around. This is why Mul-T-Lock has launched a new antibacterial key solution for *all of its cylinders, locks and padlocks. To make its customers feel safer, Mul-T-Lock’s new keys help to reduce the growth of bacteria, making it

a more hygienic solution for everyone to use. This is achieved via an antibacterial plastic head, featuring an agent that supresses the growth of unwanted bacteria. The new keys have been successfully tested to ISO 22196, showing significantly lower bacterial contamination compared to other keys. With the plastic heads available in a dark green colour for easy recognition, the antibacterial solution is also offered as a full metal key, should a customer prefer this. Metal keys from Mul-T-Lock that adhere to these requirements will include the antibacterial logo on the key head and also meet ISO 22196 testing standards. “Offered for our entire range of cylinders, locks and padlocks, Mul-T-Lock’s new antibacterial keys ensure you never again have to compromise when it comes to how hygienic your keying systems are. Tested to ISO 22196, customers can have confidence and peace of mind that the antibacterial solution keeps the collection of contaminants on the surface of the key to an absolute minimum and vastly reduces the spread of bacteria. “And with customers able to choose between an instantly recognisable solution featuring the plastic green heads, or a more traditional metal composite product if they prefer, you can be assured that we have the right solution to meet every need.” For more information on Mul-T-Lock’s new antibacterial keys, please visit www.mul-t-lock.co.uk

Hanwha Techwin introduces licence-free occupancy monitoring solution Help is immediately on hand for businesses who are urgently seeking to safely re-open their doors following the easing of COVID-19 related restrictions. Hanwha Techwin’s licence-free Occupancy Monitoring application provides retailers, places of worship and museums, as well as leisure facilities, pubs, clubs and restaurants, with highly accurate data on the number of customers on their premises at any particular time. Compatible with the recently introduced Wisenet P Series AI cameras, the edge-based Occupancy Monitoring application simultaneously counts the number of people entering or leaving a building. When the maximum permitted number of people has been reached, the application generates alarm outputs to control automatic doors or a traffic beacon, as well as ‘wait’ or ‘enter’ messages which can be displayed on a monitor. Serverless The Occupancy Monitoring application has the power to aggregate and process data from multiple cameras and is therefore ideal for buildings with multiple entrances and exits. As a serverless solution, it negates the need for system integrators to spend time configuring complicated server-side software. It also significantly reduces the capital cost of a project as the end-user does not need to incur the cost of buying a server. Utilising cutting-edge technology With the support of Deep Learning AI built into the cameras, the Occupancy Monitoring application offers the additional benefit of being able to accurately count people even when a camera is wall mounted. Unlike less accurate people counting solutions which use conventional video analytics, the camera does not have to be mounted on a ceiling to provide an overhead field of view. This means the camera can be simultaneously used for security purposes and people counting, and users are also able to take advantage of a host of additional video analytics applications which can be run onboard the camera, including heatmap and intrusion, loitering and people/object detection. Time and cost saving The dome cameras have a four-part magnetic modular design which makes them extremely easy to install. The ability to prefigure IP network settings without the need to remove the camera modules from their packaging also reduces the time an engineer has to spend on site, thereby enabling companies with multiple sites to rapidly roll-out the application with minimal disruption to their business.

Life after COVID-19 The high performance and feature rich Wisenet P Series AI cameras will continue to deliver significant benefits beyond the immediate requirement to support the Occupancy Monitoring application during COVID19. In addition to being used to detect and monitor any criminal activity, they can easily be redeployed to capture valuable business intelligence and help companies improve productivity. Retailers, in particular, can analyse the impact of any marketing activities on footfall and by identifying a store’s busiest times, better manage the peaks and troughs of customer flow at checkouts. In this respect, the cameras are supported by Wisenet Retail Insight (v2.0), a business intelligence solution which utilises people counting, heat mapping and queue management applications to display statistical analytics on a centralised dashboard, along with other practical information such as weather reports. With the help of AI algorithms onboard the Wisenet P Series AI cameras, Retail Insight is also able to display an estimated age and gender of store visitors. Licence-free solution “At this most challenging of times for our communities and the economy, we are proud to have the opportunity to contribute to the efforts being made to recover from the effects of COVID-19 by offering the Occupancy Monitoring application as a licence-free solution,” said Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe. “With the security budgets of many businesses being stretched, we have felt a social responsibility to offer the application licence-free and in doing so, help maximise the number of end-users who are able benefit from it”. ExcelRedstone to deploy Maxxess eFusion integration at £300m London development ExcelRedstone is implementing an ambitious integration project, using Maxxess eFusion™ technology, at the first high-rise residential and hospitality development in the City of London for many years. Currently under construction, the £300m 43-storey One Bishopsgate Plaza development will see security and building management technology operating seamlessly together in a setting that includes both new-build and listed conservation area structures. As well as having 160 new private apartments, when completed the development will include a 237-bed five star Pan Pacific Hotel, a public plaza and a Pacific Ballroom, promoted as the Square Mile’s first dedicated banqueting venue. ExcelRedstone selected eFusion for the project because of the flexibility it allows, enabling rapid integration, off-the-shelf, with a wide choice of security, safety and business-critical technologies. “The customer wanted a seamless, single interface that allows front of house guest services to be linked to back of house functions and give the highest operator efficiency and enhanced customer experience,” says Matt Salter, Director, ExcelRedstone. With its modular, building block approach, eFusion provides an umbrella management system for an expanding choice of preferred technologies for commercial, hospitality and mixed-use settings, including guest check-in, reservation & visitor management, access control, surveillance, and building systems. In use, eFusion drives efficiency and eliminates gaps in security by removing the need for operators to continually switch between systems. Two of the most important technologies being integrated by eFusion at One Bishopsgate Plaza are the full-featured, Oracle Hospitality Opera property management & guest service system, and a 266 door ASSA ABLOY wireless electronic locking solution. ExcelRedstone is also using eFusion to integrate Zenitel IP intercoms, a KONE lift system, and the 14 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

building management (BMS) system using the BACnet™ protocol, which will enable estate managers to optimize energy efficiency based on usage and occupancy. The eFusion integration also allows a more flexible approach with the surveillance system - for example, making it easy to use a choice of Axis cameras, with specialist mounts, in the listed conservation areas of the site, integrating them with over 350 Mobotix fixed lens and panoramic cameras through the highlysecure Wavestore video management system (VMS). The surveillance and other security systems will be monitored live from two separate control rooms, one for the hotel and one for the wider estate. As well as integrating these and fitting out the control rooms, Excel Redstone is also responsible for networking and AV systems at the development. “Our engineers are pre-staging the entire system off-site,” explains Salter. “This is allowing us to test everything in advance and to reduce packaging waste and environmental impact on site. It also lets us work more efficiently, in step with the ongoing construction schedule, floor by floor.” One Bishopsgate is the latest of a growing number of mixed-use developments - including hotels, retail, office and residential complexes - to use eFusion to streamline security, safety and facilities management. “We are seeing a growing trends towards automation and centralised management, and the solutions being deployed at these locations are increasingly sophisticated – but that doesn’t mean they have to be complex,” says Lee Copland, Managing Director EMEA, Maxxess. “Quite the opposite in fact. By keeping things simple and integrating off-the-shelf with the widest choice of technologies, Maxxess is providing secure solutions that are easier to install and to use than traditional alternatives.” For more information go to www.excelredstone.com

COVID-19 leads to increased demand for IP based access control systems The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all industries in different ways. For healthcare and medical organisations, operational management approaches have changed right across the sector and not just on the clinical front. Videx, a leading manufacturer and supplier of access control and door entry systems, has seen a sharp rise in demand for IP based intercom systems. The contagiousness of the coronavirus coupled with the high volume of patients admitted to hospital with the disease has increased the need to secure specific wards and departments. At the same time, GP practices, pharmacies and other healthcare organisations have also had to look at their entry provision to minimise the risk of the virus spreading. Neil Thomas, National Sales Manager at Videx UK, said: “IP based intercoms are hugely popular access control solutions generally due to the flexibility and ease of installation IP provides. The Videx IP kit for example comes as an expandable system with multiple entrance and call points that can be customised to suit the needs of any building whether that’s an A and E department, an outpatient unit or medical centre that’s home to several GP practices. “The huge benefit of IP technology is that it doesn’t require dedicated wiring infrastructure and can be used on existing networks. These networks can be shared with other technologies such as CCTV, building management and many others. “We’ve seen a rise in enquiries and orders placed 16 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

for our IP intercoms because of the urgent need to secure sensitive and specific areas in buildings such as hospitals, pharmacies and GP surgeries. For instance, in hospitals where there are dedicated COVID-19 wards access to such wards require maximum security but, at the same time, authorised entry convenience and ease and this is exactly what our IP system provides.” There is also a heightened need for controlling access to the general public. As a result, demand in the Videx IP range has grown, especially for one-way, single button entry units where a member of staff can grant access from their desk via videophone. The Videx IP kit includes a wall mount 6200 series videophone and the entrance panel which is available in standard or vandal resistant form with surface or flush mounting options. The videophone includes a touch screen 3.5” colour display enabling the end user to customise a range of settings as well as initiate calls to entrance points, neighbouring buildings and internally to other extensions with the facility to have up to 16 videophones in each building. The videophones can also intercommunicate and cascade calls to other locations if they are not answered. What’s more, an event call log can be viewed on the videophone with a video capture feature to see missed callers. SICK SensorApps help people to keep their distance PeopleCounter is able to process data at high-speeds and is completely anonymous with no need to detect or record any personal location or identification data. A master/slave mode makes it possible to combine several LiDAR Scanners to track larger areas with multiple entry and exit points, such as shopping centres, airports or stations. With eight multifunctional digital input/output connections on the device, the system can easily be set up to keep track of the number of people via mobile, PC and cloud-based systems, as well as integrating with wider controls or security systems where necessary.

Responding to the need for technologies to slow the spread of Covid-19, SICK has developed PeopleCounter and DistanceGuard SensorApps which help to ensure that people keep to the recommended distance apart in working and public spaces. SICK PeopleCounter The SICK PeopleCounter is a SensorApp based on a machine learning algorithm running on SICK’s MRS1000 3D LiDAR sensor. One or more sensors can be easily set up to count people at entry and exit points, or allow users to control the number of people occupying a pre-defined area in real time. Because the system can reliably detect human contours, while ignoring other objects, customers or workers are counted accurately as they enter or leave buildings or other pre-defined spaces. The PeopleCounter works by using a speciallydeveloped on-board algorithm to evaluate the pointcloud data generated by the MRS1000. Because the SensorApp can use data from the MRS1000’s four 275° scanning layers to determine direction of movement, the number of people in a monitored area can be updated in real time. The system can identify more than one person in parallel independent of their direction (In or Out) within a range of up to 3.5 m. As it only sees the human outline, the SICK 20 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

SICK DistanceGuard SICK’s Social DistanceGuard App works on the SICK TiM 2D LiDAR Sensor to monitor areas where the recommended distance between people must be upheld, e.g. in a queue, and provide an alert if they are too close. A signal, in the form of a light, audible alarm, or visual signal is triggered as soon as the distance between two people falls short of the minimum. The on-device settings can be used to input or change the required distance at any time. The presence of people can be detected and evaluated thanks to the SICK TiM’s 270° scanning capability and range up to 25 metres. SICK’s UK Product Manager for Imaging, Measurement and Ranging, Neil Sandhu commented: “SICK’s rapid response to develop social distance monitoring technologies was enabled by the versatility of the AppSpace software development platform that facilitates the rapid development of plug-and-play solutions. “When combined with SICK’s programmable, highperformance LiDAR scanning technology, the result is simple, self-contained devices that are quick to install, and easy for customers to integrate into wider customer control or monitoring systems. “We’d be delighted to hear from any customers who have ideas for further applications that could be adapted to provide technology solutions during the current pandemic.” For more information please www.sick.co.uk

Analytics helping businesses reopen Hanwha Techwin Europe, highlights ways video surveillance may help businesses safely reopen after COVID-19 restrictions are eased

U

ri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe, highlights some of the ways in which the latest advances in video surveillance may be able to help businesses safely reopen after the restrictions caused by COVID-19 are eased. Governments around the world who are determined to contain or delay the spreading of the disease, are locking down whole cities or at the very least, demanding that places where people congregate in large numbers, such as retail stores, restaurants shops, pubs and clubs, close.

22 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

However, at some point hopefully not too far away in the future, the number of people being tested positive for COVID-19 will begin to reduce and thought will be given as to how many of these types of businesses will be able to safely reopen. Inevitably, social distancing rules will have to remain in place and this is likely to mean only a specified number of people will be allowed to be in a controlled area at any one time. Video Analytics and AI solutions There are so many environments where complying with this limitation will be a challenge. Pubs and clubs,

for example, will be desperate to reopen at the earliest opportunity, but in order to do so, might have to employ additional door staff just to count the number of people who enter and leave. For companies already struggling to survive, the cost of hiring these extra members of staff could be prohibitive. Fortunately, there is a simple solution readily available which can be quickly deployed and will prove to be far more cost-effective and accurate than employing someone to do the same job. It comes in the form of video surveillance cameras which are supplied preloaded with people counting video analytics

The analytics are able to provide real-time information on the net number of people on the premises at any particular time, as it is able to simultaneously count both people entering and leaving a premises. The data can be displayed in an easy to understand format on smartphones, laptops and PCs to provide managers with an early warning that permitted numbers are close to the permitted limit. System integrators will no doubt be able to identify many other social environments where people counting video analytics will help ensure that social distancing rules are implemented and verified. We do not yet know how these rules will evolve when the immediate crisis is over, but shopping centres, art galleries and museums are just a few more examples of where the solution can be effectively deployed. Occupancy Although developed to help retailers gain a greater understanding of customer behaviour, video analytics capable of identifying occupancy levels provide a powerful tool to identify if too many people are congregating in specific areas. As an example, AI-Crowd video analytics, developed by Hanwha Techwin’s technology partner, A.I Tech, is able to provide an estimation of the number of people present in

crowded areas where they might be expected to move slowly or stop, whilst AI-Overcrowd will generate an alert if the occupancy of an area exceeds a specified threshold. As with people counting analytics, this solution can be quickly deployed and used ‘out-of-the-box’ as it can also run onboard cameras, which have open platform chipsets with sufficient processing power to do so. Many cameras will support two-way audio and as such, will enable operators to communicate with visitors that they need to move out of the area. Intelligent Video Analytics In addition to these specialist video analytics applications, a large number of IP network cameras from manufacturers such as Hanwha Techwin, include as standard various forms of license-free analytics. The latest generation of Wisenet cameras, for example, are equipped with a suite of Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA), which includes enter/exit direction, tripwire and face detection. Combinations of these various forms of video analytics can be configured to form a cost-effective digital barrier. AI With the threat of increased criminal activity, control room operators will need all the help they can get to

visually verify any suspicious activity and if necessary, direct security personnel to deal with any incident. The earlier they can do so, the better and in this respect, a new range of Wisenet cameras equipped with deep learning based video analytics will shortly be launched. These will ensure operators are not frustrated by ‘false positive’ alerts which, depending on the environment, might be generated by existing forms of video analytics, as well as the false alarms that are often generated by intruder and perimeter protection sensors. These cameras will be able to simultaneously detect and classify various object types, including people, vehicles, faces and license plates. Most importantly, it ignores video noise, waving trees, moving clouds and animals, all of which might normally be the cause of false alarms. The AI algorithms built into these new cameras will also provide greater people counting accuracy. Innovative Solutions for 2020 and beyond Within the not too distant future, we will see the introduction of AI applications developed by Hanwha Techwin and its technology partners which will enhance video surveillance systems to a level which at this time might not seem possible. Many of the innovations

Although developed to help retailers gain a greater understanding of customer behaviour, video analytics capable of identifying occupancy levels provide a powerful tool to identify if too many people are congregating in specific areas. on the horizon will potentially give greater assistance to businesses as they seek to operate in a world where social distancing will remain a very important issue for some time. Rapidly Deployable Cameras These advances in video surveillance technology will certainly also provide security personnel with powerful

tools to keep one step ahead of criminals. Indeed, the criminal fraternity are unlikely to restrain themselves at this challenging time. They will most likely seek to take advantage of a situation where many business premises will be unoccupied and therefore offer rich pickings to looters and thieves. There is certainly no shortage of

high performance cameras available which will allow control room operators to detect any suspicious activity, but the 2 and megapixel models which are part of the Wisenet X Plus series, deserve a special mention. The four-part magnetic modular design of Wisenet X Plus cameras enables them to be installed much more quickly than other cameras of a similar specification. The ability to prefigure IP network settings without the need to remove the camera modules from their packaging, also reduces the time an engineer has to spend on site and/or cause disruption, as does the cameras’ motorised PTRZ gimbals which enable installers to remotely pan, tilt, rotate and zoom the lens position in order to set the camera’s field of view. A Positive Outlook Manufacturers such as Hanwha Techwin have for some time been striving to help end-users achieve added value from their video surveillance solutions. COVID-19 has made it even more important that we do. Fortunately, our industry has no shortage of ingenious design and development engineers who will help us rise to the challenge and ensure we contribute to companies getting back to being ‘open for business’. System integrators requiring more detailed information on the products and solutions mentioned in this article should contact Hanwha Techwin. RETAIL SECURITY

Watch the markets The benefits of live-streaming body cameras for retail security by Neil Hendry, Vice President EMEA, Digital Barriers

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has put unprecedented strain on the retail industry, grocery in particular and has necessitated a dramatic shift in the way consumers are allowed to shop. Long queues resulting from the necessary physical distancing measures, purchase limits placed on highdemand items and the challenges of keeping up with demand have all led to tensions running high.

26 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

The welfare of staff should always be a top priority for retailers, but never has it been more important than now as employees face heightened risk and the country relies on its key workers more than ever. With this in mind, businesses should turn to technology to mitigate the risks retail employees are facing. Body worn cameras, that have long been used by law enforcement officers to provide safety and peace of mind, are now being utilised by

retailers to increase the security of their in-store staff, delivery drivers and security guards. The benefits of body worn cameras Traditional record-only body worn cameras have been a staple for many industries, including law enforcement, firefighters and security guards. They have also become commonplace within retail. For example, Asda equipped its security guards with bodycams in 2018 in

order to protect them from violence and abuse. Record-only devices are useful for providing ‘after the fact’ video evidence should a violent situation occur. For example, if a customer was to verbally or physically abuse a shop worker, or if there was an altercation between two shoppers that an employee was witness to, the employee could trigger their body camera to record video footage of that event. This invaluable footage could then be used at a later date to provide evidence of the situation should it result in a court case. Video footage of the event is an objective way of ascertaining what went on and who was involved. Body cameras have also been found to reduce the likelihood of anti-social behaviour occurring. Research from the University of Cambridge has demonstrated that in the majority of cases the presence of body worn cameras improves the behaviour of both the wearer and those in its vicinity – in this case, shoppers – due to the awareness of a ‘digital witness’ in the form of the camera, which can de-escalate risky situations. However, the same study of body worn cameras for law enforcement found that assaults

against officers wearing these devices increased by 15%. Body-worn cameras undoubtedly benefit the business by improving behaviour in the majority of cases and increasing the odds of a successful prosecution when it doesn’t. They have a clear role to play in improving operations. Yet, it is understandable that frontline employees may be reluctant to wear a device that does nothing to enhance their own safety in situations where this is needed most. Next generation devices Enter live-streaming enabled body worn cameras. The limitations of record-only devices can be mitigated by adding a live-streaming element to traditional body worn cameras. These next generation devices can improve the safety of the wearer ‘in the moment’ – rather than just being used for ‘after the fact’ evidence. These devices can stream live video back to a central control room, giving security officers heightened and real-time situational awareness, which they can use to make better informed decisions and take instant action in response to a volatile situation to protect the wearer from harm.

Take a retail delivery driver for example, these professionals work alone and come into constant contact with members of the public. Many shoppers are struggling to get hold of essential items due to high demand – especially for online grocery shopping – leading to certain goods not being delivered or being replaced with a substitute. In the current climate of high tension and uncertainty – when is the next time the customer might be able to get an online delivery slot? – this may result in a volatile situation, putting the delivery driver at risk. With a live-streaming enabled body camera, the device can alert security personnel and stream real-time video of the event back to the control centre. This will allow security staff to rapidly assess each situation and take the best course of action, be that requesting the emergency services attend the scene of an incident at a customer’s house, or going to the shop floor or outside queue to dissolve a volatile situation. This real-time situational awareness is unmatched in giving employees peace of mind and keeping them safe, as well as providing video evidence should it be needed.

IN SECURITY | June 2020 | 27

Enabling deployment Successfully deploying livestreaming enabled body worn cameras does require certain considerations, as these mobile devices are streaming over cellular networkers rather than being connected to any physical infrastructure. This can result in an unreliable connection and buffering or freezing, which could be detrimental for an employee during a dangerous situation. Therefore, these devices should be deployed over a specialist codec that can cope with streaming real-time, zero latency footage even with poor network connectivity, and over ultra-low or constrained bandwidths. This is crucial for giving real-time situational awareness when employees – such as delivery drivers – are working in various locations all around the country. For the retail industry in particular, it’s useful to 28 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

deploy devices that can be used both while driving, as a dashcam, and worn on the employee’s person. Layering security As the COVID-19 healthcare crisis continues to affect our lives, retail workers are being exposed to more than just the danger of verbal or physical abuse. This unparalleled situation means employees now face a serious risk to their health whilst at work. To mitigate this new threat, retailers can look to implement other technologies into their stores, such as remote elevated temperature detection solutions, to safeguard the health of workers. Thermal cameras capable of analysing body temperature, a key indicator of the presence of a potential illness, can be situated at the entrances of retail locations. These devices will alert the operator when someone exceeds a specific temperature threshold,

identifying potential carriers of an infection and enabling appropriate action to be taken to protect both shoppers and employees, without the need for close human contact. Technology can play a vital role in the safety and security of retail workers during this strenuous time. Live-streaming body worn cameras can provide employees valuable peace of mind and protection in threatening situations, enabling security personnel to immediately pursue the most appropriate response given the circumstances. In addition, layering different methods of security and implementing novel technologies such as remote elevated temperature detection can provide a degree of protection against less tangible threats. Answering the call

Delivering security and logistics at NHS Nightingale temporary hospital

n these troubling times it has been truly inspirational to witness the efforts of organisations throughout the construction and security sectors in building the NHS Nightingale Hospital at ExCeL London. As an integral part of this massive collaborative feat, Wilson James used its security and logistics expertise to help create a facility that will treat those seriously ill with coronavirus. We are living through an extraordinary period in our history – something that is exemplified in the creation of NHS Nightingale.

30 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

Arguably the UK’s most ambitious medical project, it is now one of the world’s largest critical care units for treating patients with coronavirus. NHS Nightingale will be able to hold as many as 4,000 patients across 80 wards and is the first of several such facilities planned across the UK. Answering the call When Prince Charles opened the facility on 3rd April, it marked the culmination of a project that was only started less than two weeks previously. During this time the construction industry joined

forces with the military and NHS to achieve something that health secretary, Matt Hancock, described as ‘testament to the work and the brilliance of the many people involved’. Organisations from across the construction sector worked together to plan, design and build NHS Nightingale and Wilson James was involved from the very early stages. Jason West, Wilson James’ head of logistics and integration for NHS Nightingale, explains, ‘The NHS needed security and construction logistics functions to be implemented

and we were ready, willing and able to respond. We used expertise from all areas of our business to coordinate with the military and other private sector contractor companies to support the NHS. The whole really was greater than the sum of its parts and the level of cooperation and collaboration demonstrated across the board was incredible to witness.’ Delivering the goods Wilson James was initially tasked with coordinating the construction logistics aspect of the operation but was soon asked to support the NHS supply chain as well. This meant making sure that items including drugs and medicines, medical equipment, beds and hazardous waste bags were met on delivery and then categorised, audited, inventoried, stored and delivered to where they were needed, when they were needed and in required quantities. This required coordination with both civilian colleagues and the Royal Army Medical Corps. Asked to describe the process, Jason West replies, ‘Initially,

we were able to consolidate the construction materials at ExCeL, however, we were subsequently informed that the NHS would need the designated area for other purposes. We therefore relocated the construction materials to our nearby London Construction Consolidation Centre (LCCC) and replaced them with 25 lorries’ worth of medical equipment. Working alongside 84 Medical Supply Squadron, we configured a process whereby every 30 minutes a delivery was received via separate east and west entrances and offloaded. Our logistics people had to adapt, learn and understand the difference between construction materials and medical product at pace and scale. They then had to identify what had arrived and what hadn’t, categorise construction materials accordingly and send them to the LCCC.’ Parts of the process To further streamline the process, drive efficiency and meet ongoing demand, a 20,000ft2 marquee was erected to hold two hours’ worth of stock that could be replenished on an

on-going basis. Fully lit and designed to house medical consumables in a dry and safe environment, it also allowed operatives to build items such as flat-packed beds on-site, which could then be delivered along ExCeL’s central thoroughfare. This meant logistical delays were avoided and everyone knew what items were on-site and that they were securely located. Many of the coronavirus patients that will be admitted to NHS Nightingale will have respiratory symptoms including fever, cough, shortness of breath and other breathing difficulties. Hundreds of beds have been fitted with oxygen and ventilators and this equipment relies on a purpose built on-site oxygen ring main. To create this, liquid oxygen tanks and other compressor equipment had to be transported from all over the country and Wilson James was responsible for its safe dispatch and arrival. Park life At the same time Wilson James was developing and implementing this complex logistics strategy, on the

IN SECURITY | June 2020 | 31

evening of Sunday 29th March it was also presented with the challenge of creating and operating a temporary off-site car park. Initially this was to accommodate 1,000 cars but has now been extended to 2,000. Jason West takes up the story and says, ‘When we were asked to do this our first response was where are we going to put it? We then identified a suitable piece of land adjacent to ExCeL that would be suitable, and contacted the developer, Lendlease, which informed us that it was actually owned by the Greater London Authority (GLA). After many phone calls, by 11.00pm that night we received authorisation from the GLA to go ahead. We then contacted Keltbray which, along with Lendlease and members of the Royal Engineers, arrived on-site at 7.00am the next day to begin work on turning it into a car park, while we made sure items including construction materials, cones, welfare facilities for staff, lighting and barriers were available. It was simply awesome to be able to do this and the guys on the ground even wrote “Thank You NHS” on the roadway.’ We’re in this together Managing the security of a dynamic and complex site requires a high 32 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

level of strategic implementation. By drawing on its experience with projects such as the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Wilson James was able to configure a workable and effective system that kept people and assets safe, as well as a ‘chain of custody’ to protect equipment. At the same it made sure that workers were able to access the areas they needed to be in without hindrance or delay. Security across the site was divided between Wilson James, which focused on internal and secure logistics, while G4S took care of the perimeter. Normally business rivals, the cooperation and mutual support shown by the two organisations illustrated the collaborative spirit evident throughout this project. For Lee Evans, Wilson James’ security lead for NHS Nightingale, this was one of the most striking aspects of the experience and he states, ‘All over the site boundaries were broken between competitors and it takes something very special to make that happen. This was a tough project with long antisocial hours and little preparation or planning time. Despite that, it has been very rewarding and there were no serious injuries, incidents or accidents. For me personally,

configuring the security for NHS Nightingale’s opening ceremony, along with our security partners and the Metropolitan Police, was particularly special.’ Life savers As the UK combats the spread of coronavirus, those who have worked so hard, while selflessly compromising their own safety, to create NHS Nightingale will hope that as few people as possible pass through its doors. Keith Winterflood, Wilson James’ director of operations at NHS Nightingale, concludes, ‘This project just shows how the various elements of the construction sector can come together as one, from design to mechanical and electrical (M&E), when there’s such an important goal to achieve. Everyone has dealt with the immense pressure in a positive way, employing a heads down and “let’s go for it” attitude. We’ve all been pushed to the extreme but when the coronavirus pandemic is over, and it will be over at some point, the memory of what was achieved with NHS Nightingale will live on.’ For further information please visit www.wilsonjames.co.uk

CYBER SECURITY

Balancing evolving technology

I

How can the cyber and physical security industry stay on top of changing technology?

n the past decade, new advancements in technology have fundamentally changed the way we live and work, while opening up a whole host of new possibilities for the security industry. It’s no secret that we’re living in an era of digital transformation, where businesses are looking to become smarter than ever before - and where innovation is key. But, with cyberattacks and data breaches becoming more and more common, and technology becoming

34 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

increasingly sophisticated, security experts must remain vigilant. With so many new technologies and processes emerging, the security industry needs to ensure it’s making the most of new technologies, while not falling victim to costly and debilitating security issues. The guys at security specialist, First Fence, have explained how. Cyber Security As more and more businesses

adopt sophisticated technology to improve productivity and efficiency, the sheer number of devices, users and applications opens the door to the possibility of more threats than ever before. When it comes to cybersecurity, a proactive approach is key. 5G Connectivity The introduction of 5G connectivity opens up new possibilities - but what does that mean for the security

When it comes to cybersecurity, a proactive approach is key landscape? While 5G technology creates a lot of opportunity, as things are moving almost 100,000 times faster than 4G, it also opens up the landscape to more risk. This is because the network itself will be exponentially bigger, with more connected devices, while the sheer speed of the network means that hackers will be able to get in, and out, without being detected. In order to combat this, security experts need to adapt to the expanding landscape, investing in broad, powerful security solutions that can automatically detect and respond to threats, without having to wait for human intervention.

Blockchain While normally associated with cryptocurrency, blockchain-based solutions are now being used to improve security. Due to its ability to track digital interactions, firms can use blockchain technology to prove that data hasn’t been tampered with, protecting the integrity of security data. Similarly, blockchain-based storage solutions are gaining popularity due to their decentralised nature, meaning it’s harder for hackers to find an entry-point. VR Virtual reality has become something of a buzzword in recent years, with

industries from gaming to retail taking full advantage of its range of benefits. But, did you know VR can also be a helpful tool within the security industry? A perfect option for security training, VR is already being used by law enforcement departments and government agencies across the globe. Its benefits are clear - not only is your team able to walk through specific scenarios, but also promotes safety as staff are able to learn from mistakes, while physically being able to ‘see’ the outcomes of their actions. Similarly, it can be used to help identify suspicious behaviours, reducing the risk associated with security breaches or large events.

IN SECURITY | June 2020 | 35

Biometrics Biometric security measures - such as a fingerprint or eye retina - are becoming more common within the sector. You only need to look at the facial recognition software on iPhones to see how biometric-based identity proofing and authentication is becoming increasingly popular. While it’s still early days for biometric-based identity proofing and authentication, in the future, criminals will no longer be able to pick a lock to gain entry to your building or break into a car park. In the coming year, biometrics will become more common, and a greater focus will be placed on using this technology to improve safety and security, Contactless technology While contactless technology has been around for a while now, when it comes to security, it’s set to become even more important. Take ticketed events, for example. Every year, 36 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

ticket fraud affects nearly 5 million people, and so firms should now have a strong way of identifying the validity of tickets and passes, especially if they’re online. With the use of transfer technology, encrypted barcodes that refresh automatically within a certain timeframe and near-field communication technology contactless ticketing solutions that simply require event-goers to hold their smartphone up to a reader - security firms can cut down on ticket fraud, promoting a safer event environment. Our top tips to remain safe: 1. Protect your data: No matter the nature of your business, your data is its most important asset. Investing in cloud security software can go a long way towards encrypting this data and keeping it safe and secure. 2. Keep employees regularly educated on new platforms or

processes: ongoing training is invaluable, and staff should be kept up to date with the latest technologies and best practices. 3. Don’t forget physical security: while most people focus entirely on cybersecurity, remaining safe physically is also just as important. Alarm systems and security cameras can do wonders to deter criminals, while coded door locks and security fences can help to keep unauthorised personnel out. When it comes to digital transformation, the sky’s the limit, and security firms and experts need to remain constantly on their toes if they’re to keep up. With the constant influx of new technologies, staying prepared is the key to avoiding security threats. For further information please visit www.firstfence.co.uk

RETAIL SECURITY

Every person counts Bosch Building Technologies offers countermeasures to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus and maintain safe social distancing in public settings Understand people behaviour in stores Bosch In-Store Analytics is a solution that processes anonymous position data from various Bosch cameras in the cloud. These cameras feature 38 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

built-in Intelligent Video Analytics from Bosch to deliver position data and other metrics. Advanced algorithms filter the position data according to individual location environments and relevant

behaviour patterns. In a final step, the data is intuitively presented through customized web interfaces. Here, users can flexibly query the entire data set for an area in any site at

“Technology can play a huge role in ensuring shoppers and staff feel confident, safe and well informed as they move to the new normal.” any point in time. The actual video streams never leave the retailer’s premise, thus maintaining shopper’s privacy and security. Use heat maps to find critical store areas Typically, In-Store Analytics is used to optimize the product merchandising and customer service experience. While originally the system supports retailers to maximize the revenue of a store, they can now use the data to ensure customer safety and confidence whilst shopping in their store. For instance, crowded store areas are visualized on a heat map. This can be used for a targeted physical distancing signage, disinfection measures or a redesign of the store layout for better crowd distribution. Balance people traffic in stores In-Store Analytics traffic metrics can inform retailers to adapt their store opening times so that traffic can

spread more evenly across the day. Also, detailed queue line length statistics can inform when all cash counters should be open, so customer lines can be spread and relaxed as much as possible, easing physical distancing possibilities in queue situations. Cameras see more than pixels Bosch Intelligent Video Analytics algorithms offer features like “person in field”, “birds eye view counting” and “crowd detection”. These functions are used at entrances of supermarkets to count people that enter or to alert an operator if people enter restricted areas. It can measure the occupancy of people in certain areas, for example in front of an ATM machine. Intelligent Bosch camera combined with a powerful Philips Android SoC display Another solution to maintain safe social distancing is to combine

intelligent cameras from Bosch with smart displays from Philips. Whether for a retail store, supermarket, a cinema, or any other public venue, maintaining a safe social distance is the priority. Now Bosch and Philips Professional Display Solutions, have brought their strength together. By combining the power of Philips Android displays and Bosch intelligent cameras, they bring end users the information they need to manage their places of work effectively and efficiently. Allowing them to go back into business with the confidence they need. PeopleCount for customer queue communications The PeopleCount solution uses a sensor, which is connected to an app on the display at the entrances to the premises. This solution enables users to track the number of customers entering and leaving a public setting. Delivering real time information to the display for customer queue

communications, alerting visitors when it’s unsafe to enter, via a simple traffic light system. “Technology can play a huge role in ensuring shoppers and staff feel confident, safe and well informed as they move to the new normal.” Bosch believe that Video Analytics is an important enabler of any strategy to substantially improve levels of security, as well as offering 40 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

clear business advantages beyond security. That’s why all Bosch cameras from the IP 3000i series onwards have built-in Video Analytics as standard.

Video Analytics also enable a scene to be analyzed for reasons that go far beyond security. Example to support solutions that maintain safe social distancing in public settings

BRITISH SECURITY INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION

Reset the mindset Security industry to reset perceptions of security officers in the public domain

42 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

T

he British Security Industry Association (BSIA) has joined forces with the Security Institute and the Security Commonwealth to run an awareness campaign to highlight the essential role that Security Officers play in public life, and to increase respect and recognition for their capabilities. The private security industry has developed vastly in the last 10 years and this campaign is designed to reset the public perception of the security professional. The campaign will showcase security professionals as a respected, valued, professional service provider contributing to and creating a safe and secure environment: critical to protecting people, places, and property – a key worker that is acknowledged and embedded in our daily lives. Within the last few months, due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, security officers have been working in critical settings playing key roles whilst remaining unheralded, such as; working at testing centres and the NHS Nightingale Hospitals, ensuring critical food deliveries from warehouses and managing queues and customers at supermarkets. They have also been involved in

safeguarding the homeless in new sheltered accommodation, physical security at factories and premises, protecting industrial estates from illegal fly tipping during lockdown; and supporting police patrols in London. These are just a few examples of roles the industry and their officers provide that the industry believes are rarely acknowledged by the public. Mike Reddington, Chief Executive, BSIA, said: “The recognition of security officers as key workers is the start of a re-appraisal of what service they provide to the community in keeping the public safe and secure. As we exit lockdown and have to navigate public spaces again, they will have a crucial role in supporting public confidence. We are working closely with the Police and all other public bodies to find the best way to achieve this.” Rick Mounfield, Chief Executive, the Security Institute, said: “The security sector is vast with specialisms from Cyber and Engineering to protective services including both technical measures and security officers. The latter engages with society more than the rest but is often overlooked and unappreciated. Great effort has

been invested in the professional standards and capabilities of frontline officers and they have proven their worth during the Coronavirus crisis in the UK. They, along with the wider security sector deserve to be recognised, respected and appreciated for the safety and security they provide across the UK. Guy Matthias, Chairman of the Security Commonwealth (SyCom), said: “SyCom is comprised of some 40 organisations from across the security landscape all of whom share common objectives. These include building professionalism, raising standards and sharing best practice in order to help develop a more effective security response to keep people safe and secure. I hope that this campaign can make more people recognise the changes we have all made and continue to make.” During July the BSIA will be holding its annual British Security Awards (online for 2020), which is its annual showcase of celebrating security excellence, that highlights many great security officers who, on a daily basis across the United Kingdom, exceed expectations through customer service, teamwork, innovation and outstanding acts in the face of adversity.

IN SECURITY | June 2020 | 43

“The recognition of security officers as key workers is the start of a re-appraisal of what service they provide to the community in keeping the public safe and secure.” These achievements are celebrated across the industry which the public do not know about and part of the campaign aims to bring these examples of professionalism to a wider audience. The BSIA and its partners are keen to work with the SIA as the industry regulator and are also encouraging the industry to engage with the #SIAHeroes campaign to recognise the great, and often unseen work that is being carried out by security officers.

44 | June 2020 | IN SECURITY

The BSIA have also opened up a consultation on what to call the service that security officers provide, as Manned Guarding fails to reflect increasing numbers of women in the workforce and the scope of services provided. Today, the industry universally calls its staff ‘security officers’ to reflect a far wider safeguarding role than just guarding and reviewing other terminology is part of the overall campaign. The industry will be reaching

out to all companies, professionals and organisations in the sector to participate in the campaign, and hope that over the coming challenging weeks as lockdown is eased, the industry can play its part in ensuring that the country emerges with confidence to start to recover and build for the future.
