Flying high how two Bulgarian airports have improved security and operational performance with new IP video management platforms
4 I Autumn 2010 I IN Security
RAD Group installed Milestone’s xProtect software and Varna and Burgas airports in Bulgaria; both are gateways to the popular Black Sea holiday resorts
M
ilestone Systems’ open platform IP video management software is being used by Fraport AG to improve both security and operational excellence at Varna and Burgas airports in Bulgaria. RAD Group has installed Milestone XProtect enterprise software, operating several hundred Axis network cameras in both airports, with IBM servers and Cisco network infrastructure. At the end of 2006 the GermanBulgarian consortium of the airport operator Fraport AG and the Bulgarian logistics company BM Star won a bid for the operation of both Varna and Burgas airports – gateways to the popular Bulgarian
Black Sea tourist region that includes Sunny Beach. Called the ‘Summer Capital’ of Bulgaria, Varna and Burgas are at the heart of the area, which includes developed business communities, close to both resorts and transport facilities. Over a 35-year concession period, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management will be operating and investing in the development of both coastal airports. Prior to 2008, Varna and Burgas Airports had individual systems for different tasks, and analogue surveillance cameras. The analogue technology had limitations in quality like the inability to monitor remotely between the two airports, to expand the systems, or to integrate with other security solutions.
Management could see that IP technology was the way of the future and they did not want to be singlevendor dependent, in order to get best price performance. RAD Group, a Milestone Certified Partner in the Solytron distributor channel, has installed Milestone XProtect Enterprise software, operating several hundred Axis network cameras in both airports, with IBM servers and Cisco network infrastructure. Retention of the recorded video is set to the required 30-day regulation. Control rooms at each site with 12 37” inch display screens each show the Milestone Smart Client views of both live and recorded video, which provide overview of the customs area, baggage claim belts, arrival >

“The system can also improve operational efficiency, monitoring aircraft movements and servicing including baggage and food supply, vehicle traffic, and operations” and departure areas, shops, and gates. Varna and Burgas airports are using the Milestone surveillance not just for security but also to improve operational efficiency. They monitor aircraft taking off and landing on the runways and on the apron to ensure proper servicing of the planes including baggage and food supply movements, vehicle traffic, and operations around the tanks for refuelling. The Milestone surveillance system can be viewed and managed centrally by Fraport personnel for both of the airports or locally at each airport, depending on the user access given. “With the implementation of Milestone XProtect Enterprise at both airports, Fraport gains the following improvements: unified video surveillance systems at both airports and centralization of the software, hardware and communications; surveillance and control of technological processes in airport servicing – runway, apron, fuel farm, security checks, passenger and baggage flow. The RAD Group manages the installation perfectly with the highest efficiency,” says Hristo Botev, Head of IT, Fraport Twin Star Airport Management.
Scaling up In 2008, the airports set up the Milestone IP video platform, learning the system thoroughly and fine-tuning it. The Milestone licensing structure makes it simple for the customer to pay as they grow. They have a PMA (Product Maintenance Agreement) that has already allowed them to upgrade to include the new XProtect Smart Client 5.0, released in February 2010. This has shown them how they can continue with future upgrades and expand their installation over time. The PMA thereby protects their cost of ownership, giving them
6 I Autumn 2010 I IN Security
return on their investment for years to come. Fraport Twin Star has plans to build new terminals at both airports. With the Milestone IP video open platform, it will be no problem to expand the system for this coverage, including management of activities during the construction phase. Since the airport staff includes some people with programming skills, they are furthermore interested in using the Milestone SDK (Software Development Kit) to make integrations with back-end applications like logistics, to work in concert with the Milestone open platform video surveillance. Milestone’s archiving technology provides great cost efficiencies for the airports, especially considering their 30-day archive retention rule. XProtect allows them to archive their recorded video on the IBM storage hardware that provides large cost-efficient hard disks, and simultaneously operates with the live video running on faster performance disks.
In addition, initial installations of some H.264 IP cameras have already proven cost savings of 30%, so the airports look forward to incorporating more of these high-compression video cameras in future. XProtect software makes it very easy to add new cameras and innovations as they become available in the market. The airports want to add other innovations in the future through video analytics. These could be applied when they make entrance and exit lanes for passenger movements in the terminals, especially in the customs areas. Uni-directional flow will make it easier for analytics to alert when someone is going in the wrong direction. They also are looking into left baggage analytics and tripwire solutions to help prevent people from going to unauthorized areas. Tailgating alerts could detect improper access by people who try to enter on someone else’s card. n For more information see www.milestonesys.com.

CBC’s C-Allview cameras secure military museum exhibits
C
BC (Europe) has been called in to protect a range of exciting military exhibits at an expanding visitor attraction in north-east England. CBC systems including its Ganz C-Allview camera have been installed to help secure the Heugh Gun Battery Museum in Hartlepool, a faithfully restored 19th century coastal defence battery. Heugh Gun Battery’s exhibits include over 15 artillery pieces ranging from small portable weapons to large naval guns. Many of these are classics, like the museum’s 25-pounder, Bofors and 5.5-inch Howitzer weapons. Having won a contract to provide onsite security, north of England regional installer Euro Security conducted a risk assessment and environmental survey before calling in CBC to advise on the best surveillance solutions for the museum’s internal and external areas. Euro Security’s director Jonathan Nattrass explains that nine of CBC’s high-resolution Ganz NH258 day/night cameras have been specified to carry out internal monitoring, making use of their 540TVL colour daytime images in conjunction with the cameras’ sharp black

and white pictures at night. Additionally, two of CBC’s Ganz ZCDT4312 vandal-resistant dome cameras have been deployed. For external views, particular measures were required to deal with the locally harsh environmental conditions faced at Heugh Gun Battery’s coastal position. Nattrass explains that salty seawater must be combated, while the site can also be particularly cold during the winter. These factors led CBC’s Business Development Manager (North), Steve Dunning, to recommend the company’s C-Allview system as an appropriate long-term solution. These high-speed rugged PTZ cameras, which are sealed to IP67, are designed for installation in harsh and challenging environments. Their vandal-resistant features include bodies cast from aluminium, which are hard anodised and powder coated to protect them from scratching, oxidation or attack from solvents. Operationally, C-Allview offers resolution up to 520TVL and a useful maximum 36x optical zoom. n For further information visit www. cbceurope.co.uk or email info@cbcuk.com
“The new keypad gives users access to an on-screen help menu that can address operational problems reducing or eliminate unnecessary calls to the installer”
Honeywell system reduces false alarms and improves customer experience Honeywell has launched the Galaxy TouchCenter Prox, an innovative and enhanced version of the popular Galaxy TouchCenter keypad with an integrated proximity reader designed to reduce the number of false alarms and police call-outs due to operator errors such as incorrect PIN entry. The customer experience is simplified and the integration of the innovative proximity function means the keypad is now fully compliant with UK standards. The TouchCenter touch screen keypad with graphical display simplifies programming and provides a more intuitive experience for the end user. Unlike regular keypads, logs are much easier to read and analyse and the management of users and multi-area systems is more straightforward, enabling end-users to easily manage the system. If users prefer a more traditional MK7 keypad instead of the new interface, a simple button allows them to switch to a standard 32 character display. The Galaxy TouchCenter Prox also now incorporates a VGA high definition screen, allowing photo quality images to be displayed. This innovation, enabled by a simple SD card slot, provides a wealth of customisation options such as a family photo for a home owner or a company logo for a business. Installers can also use this tool to display their contact information and company logo on
the keypad screen to drive sales and provide a quick point of reference for helpline numbers. The new keypad also gives users access to an onscreen easy-to-navigate help menu that can address operational problems that the user may experience, and reduce or eliminate unnecessary calls to the installer. The help menu allows the user to access information about the system on a 24/7 basis and also removes the need to store a printed instruction manual that is easily damaged or misplaced. n For further information visit www.honeywell.com/security/uk
Award for Chiron’s IRIS Secure Apps alarm system Chiron’s IRIS Secure Apps alarm signalling system has been named as one of the year’s most important technology innovations in the Security Excellence Awards. The system, which was launched in April 2010, is transforming the way that alarm monitoring works, with new benefits for end-users, ARCs and installers. The system greatly improves the way that ARCs monitor customer sites. It allows them to focus on detecting and dealing with criminal attacks and not waste time worrying about technical transmission problems. The IRIS Secure Apps system is also the first alarm transmission system that allows security managers to see, at any time, the exact status of all his alarm transmission links. This includes the ability to check back over the
system’s historical performance, to audit activity patterns, and to identify areas of risk. “IRIS Secure Apps technology is the most solid foundation stone upon which security planners can build intelligent monitoring systems, making full use of audio and video,” adds Chiron’s COO Kevin Swann. “While other IP-based transmission systems point in this direction, none has ever offered the same level of control, or the same reassurance of robustness.” Over the past 12 years the Security Excellence Awards have been a benchmark for achievement in the UK security sector, highlighting outstanding people, projects and processes. Among the various categories, the Innovation Award is the most hard-fought, with just ten finalists chosen out of more than 100 entries. n For further information visit www.chironsc.com

Varifocal lens Bullet camera launched by samsung The recently introduced SCO-2080 is set to become extremely popular among CCTV installers. Supplied pre-built into a compact IP66 rated housing and varifocal lens, the SCO-2080 will reduce installation costs by negating the need to spend time fitting external housings. The competitively priced SCO-2080, which is a true day/night camera with a removable infrared cut filter, has a long list of built-in features which include eight motion detection zones and twelve privacy masking zones, whilst coaxial control compatibility allows the fourteen language on-screen display menu to be accessed from the comfort of the control room via a compatible DVR, such as the latest coaxial control versions of Samsung’s SRD series. The inclusion of Samsung’s W-V DSP chipset ensures that the SCO-2080 can deliver very high quality colour images at 600 TV lines during the day and superb quality 700 TV lines monochrome images at night. Third generation Samsung Super Noise Reduction (SSNRIII) technology equips the SCO-2080 to eliminate image noise in low-light conditions without creating ghosting or blurring and with the additional benefit of up to 70% reduction in bandwidth requirements or video storage space, compared to standard cameras.
Other key features include Highlight Compensation technology which identifies and neutralises excessively bright areas in an image, enabling the operator to view previously hidden details. The SCO-2080 also benefits from Samsung Super Dynamic Range (SSDR) that automatically lightens the dark areas within a scene whilst maintaining the brighter areas at the same level. This ensures that the dark areas become more visible allowing the operator to ‘view’ objects in the shadows.

video management system. They also conform to the ONVIF global standard, making them compatible with other network video products. “Megapixel cameras, by definition, create greater demands on storage and bandwidth requirements compared to standard resolution cameras,” said Richard Allen-Miles, Vicon’s Sales Director for the UK and Ireland. “By utilising H.264 compression technology, however, Vicon’s new megapixel cameras provide a means to address this issue by drastically reducing file sizes and thereby minimising bandwidth usage.”
“Intelligent Motion Detection in Speed technology overcomes the challenge of utilising motion detection when a dome is on the move”
Samsung introduces a new H.264 network dome camera The SNP-3370 high-resolution network PTZ dome camera, part of Samsung’s iPOLiS range, is equipped with a powerful 37x optical zoom which captures high resolution 550TVL images to allow operators to observe the detail of far away objects. At the same time, Samsung has also launched the SNP-3301, which has a 30x zoom capability and shares the same features as the SNP-3370. Both the SNP-3370 and the SNP-3301 have an H.264/ MPEG-4/JPEG multi-codec, providing the ability to simultaneously transmit up to six different streams of images to multiple locations at various frame rates, including real time, at different resolutions. Also included in the long list of features incorporated into the SNP-3370 and the SNP-3301 is Samsung’s Intelligent Motion Detection in Speed technology, which overcomes the challenge of utilising motion detection when a dome is on the move. This innovative technology analyses successive frames of video at preset locations within a sequence and when motion is detected, the camera pauses on the preset until the motion ceases. During this time a ‘D’ is displayed on screen and an alarm output is triggered with the option to send an e-mail alert. The SNP-3370 and SNP-3301 are True Day/Night cameras with a removable infrared cut filter (IRC). They both have Wide Dynamic Range, eight Intelligent Motion Detection zones, eight Privacy Masking zones, multi-language OSD and 32GB on-board SD memory to store or back up video triggered by events.

Mayflex first with distribution of new Raytec illuminators Mayflex, the IP specialist, has become the first distributor in the UK to supply the Raytec series of High Power PoE White-Light and Infra-Red LED illuminators. Raytec’s recently launched range of High Power PoE illuminators is designed to provide lighting for all surveillance systems being installed on a network infrastructure. The new illuminators are fully weatherproof and can be used for both internal and external applications to provide dedicated lighting for network cameras. Both Infra-Red and White-light options are available, delivering excellent night-time images up to 60 metres (197ft). Installation is as simple as plugging in the PoE enabled network cable, and with an inbuilt photocell plus internal command and control electronics the PoE range is truly plug and play. CCTV lighting can sometimes be overlooked as an unnecessary extra cost, but at night or in low light conditions CCTV lighting can really enhance surveillance images, meaning that activity can be monitored with no compromise on picture quality. Even with cameras that are designed for low light or night-time viewing, a Raytec lighting solution can increase image quality even more.
Raytec understands IP and Megapixel cameras and how they require high performance lighting. During internal tests, Raytec lighting was shown to reduce both bandwidth requirements and storage requirements of network cameras by up to 95%. Without sufficient light neither video compression nor video analytics can work. n For more information go to www.mayflex.com.
