atmosphere at UK’s largest media hub MediaCity, an international hub for technology, innovation and creativity in Greater Manchester, has greatly improved the safety of

its tenants and visitors by deploying an all-new state-of-the-art IP-based solution to improve security across the 200-acre site. The integrated video, audio and data analytics solution from Axis Communications,

“Everyone that has used the system has been impressed. Indeed, each time we’ve sent security footage to the police they’ve strongly commended the image quality.” a market leader in network video, is now protecting some of the UK’s largest media powerhouses such as the BBC and ITV, without detracting from the energy and vibrancy of the surroundings; a key element to the success of the project. It had become increasingly clear in recent years that MediaCity’s analogue surveillance system was outdated and no longer fit for purpose. RS Security Consultants, an independent security consultancy and Axis partner, was tasked with auditing the site’s security architecture and recommending a new system. Following impressive demonstrations of its products when

placed against several competitors, Axis’ IP security system was deployed to deliver high-quality video surveillance, with real-time security alerts to a central control room. The solution also reduces ongoing maintenance costs and is in keeping with the hub’s sustainability and cybersecurity goals. Richard Sumner, Director at RS Security Consultants, elaborates, “MediaCity is a dynamic and vibrant hub that attracts businesses and families. It’s an exciting and visually stunning place to walk around and has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Accommodating up to 5,000 people at any one time, it

was important to establish 24/7 protection, but also that the system was unobtrusive, blending in with the environment.” Utilising Axis’ innovative network security has helped the team at MediaCity achieve their security requirements with cutting-edge IP cameras being skilfully camouflaged to match the surroundings. The MediaCity team can now benefit from superior performance without it having an impact on the atmosphere across the site, and going largely unnoticed by the many people that use the space every day. MediaCity, adds, “We’ve created a community here in which thousands of people work, live and enjoy themselves, and we want to ensure that they can continue to do so. We’re delighted with the system that’s been installed and that we chose partners with a shared focus on sustainability and cybersecurity. Axis and RS Security Consultants have helped us ensure our new security system has had as little impact on our environment as possible, while having strong measures in-built to guard against cyber threats.” Operatives across MediaCity can now feel confident that they have a state-of-the-art system in place to help them protect the site against crime. This reliable, high-quality 6 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

solution offers everything that security personnel need to detect threats and suspicious behaviours, to act on the data from multiple security solutions and to keep their tenants, customers and visitors feeling safe and secure. Tony Chebrika concludes: “Everyone that has used the system has been impressed. Indeed, each time we’ve sent security footage to the police they’ve strongly commended the image quality. I’m also confident that the high levels of security across our entire site have helped us secure a number of new business customers who prioritised a highly secure environment. That’s now guaranteed at MediaCity.” David Needham, Axis

Communications, concludes, “The system that’s been installed at MediaCity is a great example of what can be achieved when working closely alongside the end user and integrator. We’ve combined video, audio and on-board analytics to deliver a comprehensive solution that successfully achieved all of our objectives. Safety has been improved and ongoing maintenance costs reduced. Real-time alerts mean the security team can make live security decisions. In short, we’ve helped MediaCity become safer and smarter.” For further information please visit www.axis.com

Bosch provides fully IP-based emergency solution at Wycombe Wanderers’ Adams Park Praesensa public address system keeps fans safe at English Football League stadium The Praesensa public address and voice alarm system from Bosch is at the heart of the new safety system at Wycombe Wanderers’ Adams Park stadium. The football club chose for digital infrastructure design specialist and system integrator Landways to design, fund and install this new system, alongside highperformance solutions for Wi-Fi and security, to help realize owner Rob Couhig’s ambitious vision for a great match day experience. The stadium officials eventually decided on the fully IP-based Praesensa system from Bosch, which covers all public areas of the 10,000-capacity stadium and features a smart-power concept with integrated redundancies to save on energy, hardware and space. Supporting the required intelligibility for voice evacuation, the system assures security for fans, complying with the requirements set by both the English Football League and the local council for ground safety and survivability in the event of an emergency. The solution can be utilized for pre-recorded messages from the system controller’s digital message storage, or for live announcements from two Praesensa emergency call stations. The audio signals from Praesensa are fed into nine Dynacord MXE5 digital audio matrices via the built-in OMNEO IP architecture. This perfectly matches 8 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

the benefits of a combined prosound and public address system with the mandatory requirements for voice alarm systems to be fully compliant to the required standards. Functioning as a communications hub, the MXE5 can be used for all peripherals, with comprehensive supervision and monitoring of all system-wide commands. The seamless integration of all IP-based systems ensures that during an emergency, Praesensa messages are always ready to broadcast at the highest priority, with the entertainment audio automatically muted. With reliability ensured from the moment of installation, the feature-rich Bosch Praesensa provides Adams Park with a future-proof solution that can be easily configured and controlled via the intuitive user interface. “I am delighted that our new digital infrastructure is now fully in place and available for the benefit of everyone inside Adams Park,” says Rob Couhig, Chairman of Wycombe Wanderers. “We are making a long-term investment in IP technology to improve the match-day experience, reduce costs and help our business continue to thrive. It is great that the same underlying energy-efficient infrastructure that delivers our incredibly fast Wi-Fi can also be used to deliver high-quality stadium audio and new safety systems.” For further information visit www.boschsecurity.com

Flexible workspaces can thrive on the versatility of Incedo™ Business access control

Following a change in employment practices created by the pandemic, many office-based employees now follow a hybrid schedule, working where they are needed or find convenient. The fast-growing use of flexible offices and co-working spaces is testament to this emerging trend. With employees coming and going as they please, a change in how security and access control are managed is an urgent but overlooked aspect many firms are just waking up to. Clockwise is a UK and European provider of flexible office space for entrepreneurs and established businesses*. The company’s expanding offering includes contemporary offices, meeting rooms and shared workspaces across multiple cities. Any business which relies on flexibility places high demands on door security and access control. Clockwise needs a broad choice of electronic devices to secure meeting rooms, private offices, communal spaces and main entrances, which may not all require the same lock type. The office space demands of a start-up, freelance co-worker or growing SMB can change at any time, so Clockwise offer a range of membership levels and packages. Access management must be able to adapt and change as fast as Clockwise clients’ needs. Because tenants come and go frequently, Clockwise facility managers need tailoring of user access rights to be as easy as possible. Clockwise’s own spaces and portfolio may also evolve: Any access system must be able to scale instantly up or down. How flexibly Clockwise can deliver for their clients is essential to growing in such a competitive market.

Incedo Business: the right solution for flexible access control The range of Incedo-enabled devices and door hardware — managed by simple Cloud-based software — convinced Clockwise to choose ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions’ Incedo Business for all their premises. This platform-based access solution connects security software and hardware within a single, future-proofed ecosystem. The diversity of Incedo-enabled devices enables Clockwise to select the ideal electronic lock for every opening in their properties. Internal private office doors, “Zoom rooms” and meeting rooms — as well as communal area doors and entrance/exits — are now secured with wireless access control devices from the Incedo Business range. Incedo’s flexible system management options help Clockwise to operate access control with maximum efficiency. Administrators quickly create groups with tailored access for specific doors. Access permissions may also be time-limited, which is perfect for meeting room bookings or for facilitating access hours for different membership options: Private desk members get 24/7 admission, whereas hot-desk membership only allows entry during office hours. According to Clockwise: “The flexibility to create groups and the ability to remotely update cards both work really well for our business.” To learn more about the flexibility offered by Incedo Business, download a solution guide at https://campaigns.assaabloyopeningsolutions.eu/ incedo-business IN SECURITY | December 2021 | 9

Harrods Village chooses Interphone to maintain and upgrade onsite security system Harrods Village, a prestigious gated development located on the banks of the River Thames, has teamed up with Interphone to implement a comprehensive maintenance solution for onsite security systems. Under the partnership, the security systems and building technology integrator has enabled Harrods Village to complete essential work and ensure door entry, access control and CCTV systems are fit for purpose. “We have worked closely with Interphone to overcome many of the technology challenges we faced. Our previous maintenance relationship was underperforming, so we needed a new partnership approach that operated in the timeliest and costeffective manner possible,” explains Eve Pickering, Estate Manager, Harrods Village. “Interphone’s ability to understand our requirements and budgets has enabled us to proceed with much needed and long-awaited security system upgrades.” Following a competitive selection process, Interphone was awarded the contract for all scheduled maintenance, emergency call outs and parts. The company undertook a full site survey and proposed a strategy to either replace, upgrade, or maintain the problem systems. Interphone engineers spent two weeks tracing faults to understand where failures existed and what steps were needed to resolve the issues. As a result, Interphone was able to identify what needed immediate attention and where the life of some ageing systems could be prolonged. The decision was taken to update the door entry system at one apartment 16 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

building due to the lack of available parts, while continuing to maintain the access control system. This included the installation of specialist monitors in 63 flats and two entrance panels to provide a reliable and effective experience for residents and visitors. Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) was included in the solution. Harrods Village needed a system to manage capacity and reduce unauthorised usage due to the limited parking available to staff and residents. ANPR camera cameras have been installed at in and out gates, so security staff can better control gate access and provide specified time slots to visitors. “We now have an achievable plan, based on Interphone’s recommendations, that will effectively maintain our systems and target areas of improvement. The infrastructure is now in place to allow us to centralise our systems moving forward, utilise the latest security technology and create greater value for our residents. We have already made some giant strides increasing security across the Estate and providing our onsite team with the tools they need,” adds Pickering. Julian Synett, CEO of Interphone Limited commented: “We have used our proven expertise to help the estates team at Harrods Village overcome the issued it face with ageing, legacy security systems. Our effective partnership, underpinned by comprehensive maintenance provision, has delivered a future-proofed solution that is supporting continuous improvement and providing complete peace of mind.” For further information visit https://interphone.co.uk/

INTEGRATED SECURITY

Full steam ahead State railway carrier invests in an integrated security and safety solution from Johnson Controls to protect passengers travelling on a new railway link The Client Compania Naţională de Căi Ferate “CFR” - SA, the state railway carrier of Romania, has invested in an integrated security and safety solution from Johnson Controls, to protect passengers travelling on a new railway link from Otopeni Henri Coandă International Airport to Bucharest Nord main railway station. The 2.95km link, which was 22 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

planned to facilitate the large number of fans travelling from the airport to attend the Bucharest hosted EURO 2020 football matches and was completed in just 14 months from the design stage at a cost of approximately Euros 120m, is now being increasingly used by business travellers and tourists who wish to visit the city. The contract to design and

execute the entire project was won as part of a competitiveness tender process by the Arcada – ISPCF – DB Engineering consortium. Alfred Net, a systems integrator which specialises in designing and implementing turn-key security, telecommunication and network solutions, was subsequently tasked to provide the new railway terminal’s safety and security systems, as well as the

passenger communications and information systems. The Challenge “We were very pleased to have the opportunity to use our experience of providing sophisticated solutions for complex and mission critical applications in order to contribute to the success of this important project”, said Alex Vladutoiu, Managing Director & Solutions Architect at Alfred Net. “With the new link terminating within the airport, we immediately realised that any security and safety solution that we recommended to the consortium would need to meet the demanding requirements of airport security, as well as railway related EU regulations and directives. This meant that as well as being robust, ultra-reliable and cyber secure, the various component parts of the solution would need to be deeply integrated with each other so as to provide control room operators with a high level of situational awareness which would enable them to react quickly and effectively to any incidents”. “With this in mind, our previous experience led us to recommend that all the security and safety products

should be single sourced from the Johnson Controls’ access control, fire, intrusion and video surveillance brands which come under its Tyco umbrella. Simply put, we knew these various brands could collectively provide us with everything needed to put together an effective solution for this project. Importantly, we were confident that the various products, which to a large extent are ‘plug & play’, could be easily integrated without the time-consuming process of developing new drivers and interfaces”. The Solution The Alfred Net design team specified that the Tyco victor security management platform should be at the heart of the safety and security solution. In addition to helping control room operators manage and monitor the images captured by Tyco Illustra high-definition IP network cameras, victor’s graphical user interface (GUI) alerts operators in real-time as to any fire or intrusion events, as well as any access control activity. The design of the security and safety solution was based on a rigorous Risk Assessment Report which took into account the worst

case scenarios in terms of the threat to the safety of passengers, disruption and the protection of assets. “By providing a unified solution which can manage the combined data captured by the intrusion detection, access control, fire detection and video surveillance systems, victor offers authorised users with all the information they need to monitor and strictly control the movement of passengers. The Products • Video Surveillance & AI Analytics: In addition to the Tyco Illustra cameras and VideoEdge video recorders, which have been deployed to monitor the railway terminal proximity, mission critical machinery, platforms and areas open to the public, control room operators are also able to take advantage of video analytics to help them quickly detect any suspicious activity or danger. Tripwire detection, for example, can generate an alert if a passenger oversteps a platform’s safety line, whilst people counting analytics can alert security personnel to overcrowding. It can also be used by operations

personnel to help them make best use of human resources by having a greater understanding of which parts of the station are busy at different times of the day. • Access Control: A CEM Systems AC2000 access control software platform, together with eDCM350 OSDP protocol IP door controllers, are supporting smart card readers and encrypted cards to limit access to sensitive areas throughout the railway, such as communications, signalling, staff and locker rooms. As a highly scalable solution, AC2000 enabled Alfred Net to implement access control throughout expansive areas of the railway. By utilising RS485 serial communications with strong AES 128 encryption between the eDCM 350 intelligent door controllers, the OSDP readers and the smart cards, the railway is protected against the threat of controller signal cloning, as well as the threat of personnel card cloning. • Fire Detection: Zettler Profile Flexible addressable panels, flame detectors and smoke sensors have been installed throughout the station terminal to ensure mandatory compliance with EU fire regulations. Integration with the 24 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

station’s PAVA system means that pre-recorded announcements are automatically broadcast when a fire related event occurs. • Intrusion: A DSC PowerSeries Neo intrusion system is providing protection for areas which may be left unattended, such as cash handling areas with integrated panic buttons ensuring there is a rapid reaction to any intrusion alarm. Success Alfred Net worked closely with the Johnson Controls’ pre-sales team to ensure the best products were specified for each location and application and the comprehensive security and safety solution was installed alongside the station’s iPIS communications and information software. “This was without doubt the most complex project that the client has been involved with and reflects its determination to invest in the latest technology to ensure maximum operational efficiency and to protect its passengers and assets”, said Alex Vladutoiu. “This has resulted in diverse solutions, such as video analytics and flame detection based on video technology interacting with laser detection, RGB LED displays,

digital signage, Text-to-Speech and many other state-of-the-art technologies, to deliver a highly effective total solution”. Since December 2020 when the new link became operational, the highly complex and integrated security and safety solution from Johnson Controls has been playing a key role in ensuring the smooth operation of the train station and the running of 72 trains per day, (36 pairs), which arrive and depart every 20 minutes from and to the airport. “As a solution architect, Tyco is indeed my preferred security provider for integrated projects. As a unified solution the Tyco suite of products are almost ‘plug and play’ and give you everything you need to build up an integrated system without spending additional time or money on developing other interfaces. We were delighted to have designed and implemented the new Otopeni Airport Railway Terminal project in less than one year and we look forward to our continued partnership with Tyco”. IP SECURITY

To go IP or not go IP, is no longer the question Hybrid solutions allow you to decide if and when to migrate

S

imon Shawley, Business Development Manager at Smart R Distribution, explains how recent advances in video recording technology means that installers can help end-user clients to extend the life of their existing analogue CCTV systems, whilst enabling them to migrate to a full IP network based video surveillance system at their own pace. IP network-based video

26 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

surveillance solutions offer users significant advantages over traditional analogue CCTV systems. These include the ability to benefit from the latest generation of multimegapixel and ultra-high definition cameras, as well as the opportunity to monitor and manage the system from anywhere on the network. For mission critical applications, IP network-based video surveillance provides a high level of resilience, as the captured images can be recorded

and stored at any location on the network and retrieved via a PC or smart device. However, despite these benefits, it was not that long ago that security managers agonised over whether they should attempt to persuade their financial masters and IT colleagues to agree to the replacement of an existing analogue CCTV system, to an IP network based video surveillance solution. The choice was either/or and although

there was an understandable inclination to want to deploy cameras and recorders which capitalise on the very latest technology, there was inevitably budgetary restrictions and ‘don’t even think about it’ resistance from technical colleagues who were concerned about the impact on the company’s network infrastructure. In 2021, the question is no longer whether or not there is a justifiable need to immediately migrate to Video over IP. Users can now choose from a range of fully functional hybrid solutions which enable them to extend the life and cost-effectively enhance the performance of their existing analogue CCTV systems. This is because hybrid solutions allow users to benefit from the superb quality high definition images captured by IP cameras, without having to move to a complete IP network solution. Hybrid Video Surveillance For users who want to immediately benefit from being able to capture

and record high definition images but are not yet ready or able to install an IP based system, HD analogue cameras, which are able to capture and transmit images and audio without any latency at distances up to 500m using standard coax, provide a cost-effective way to upgrade and extend the life of their existing analogue CCTV systems. Users can then migrate to an IP network based video surveillance solution at some point in the future and at their own pace. XVR recorders Hybrid XVR recording devices, which are also known as Pentabrid video recorders, have been available for some time. They facilitate the recording of images captured by a mix of analogue and IP cameras and this means that an existing analogue CCTV system can be significantly upgraded, with users able to benefit from the recording of images which have a resolution of up to 4K.

Until recently, the number of channels which could be allocated to IP cameras on a 16 channel machine, was typically limited to just 2. The latest generation of hybrid XVRS, however, now offer a far greater level of flexibility. With the use of a relatively low cost switch, the available number of channels on these NVRs can be configured to meet the users’ immediate needs, e.g. 4 channels allocated to IP cameras and the remainder for analogue cameras, but with the option to change the mix as and when requirements change. Transmission and Power Traditionally, analogue cameras and recorders were installed with a coax cable between them for the purposes of transmitting video data and they required the provision of a local power supply in order to operate. When IP network based cameras were first introduced, they worked in the same way, but a

IN SECURITY | December 2021 | 27

subsequent significant technological advance saw the development and introduction of Power over Ethernet (PoE). This allowed electrical power to be supplied via a network switch or a PoE enabled network video recorder (NVR), and the power could be provided over the same cable carrying the video data. Further advances in technology then saw the development of Power

Simon Shawley

over Coax (POC), which offered the benefits of PoE but over coax cabling to HD analogue cameras. It therefore became possible to power the cameras directly from an XVR recorder and most impressively, over distances of typically up to 500 metres, with at least one camera/ recorder manufacturer able to achieve this over 800 metres. Now, with the latest generation of transmission products available, hybrid solutions are available where PoE can be provided over coax to IP cameras and so whatever type of cabling is in place, you can benefit from this hybrid joint power and transmission option. System Expansion POC Ethernet Extender devices are readily available from distributors such as Smart R, which provide the flexibility to upgrade and/or expand an existing analogue based CCTV system over existing coax, e.g. by adding multiple new IP cameras to take advantage of Deep Learning AI or intelligent video analytics, as well as the cameras’ ability to capture high definition images. They can also be used to provide a data

28 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

only connection for a myriad of other network devices. It is worth noting that a 4-channel POC Ethernet Extender can enable the transmission of video and power to 4 cameras over a single cable, which makes it highly cost-effective to expand and upgrade a system without having to install new network cabling. Summary Whilst the majority of new surveillance systems installed in the future are likely to be based on IP network technology, HD analogue cameras combined with XVRs, provide a significant opportunity to upgrade and extend the life of the countless number of existing analogue CCTV systems. However, they also provide a platform to add new IP cameras and other devices as well. The good news is that hybrid video surveillance solutions are very easy to implement, with the added bonus that there is no need to incur the cost and time of installing encoders or converters. ACCESS CONTROL

Open migration The key benefits of migrating to an open architecture access control system by Nick Smith, Business Development Manager at Genetec

T

he access control market has undergone a major transformation in the last decade. The arrival of new technologies has given organisations a greater choice of components, allowing them to do more with their access control systems (ACS). Some organisations, however, are still holding on to outdated ACS technology. In part, they’re afraid of the costs associated with migrating and opt instead to

30 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

pour time and money into maintaining their legacy systems. Protect your business A unified ACS can do more than simply lock and unlock doors. It can protect an organisation’s people and assets more effectively and can help improve business operations and decision-making capabilities. It can give organisations access to new insights that helps them improve operations, especially

when relevant data is aggregated and displaying dynamically through intuitive dashboards. These dashboards are fully customisable and combine live devices with reports, charts, and histograms in one central location. This means security teams have a unified view of events happening on site or within systems at a single glance. By tracking key indicators and information, dashboards put events into perspective. For example,

designing a dashboard that tracks active alarms alongside other metrics, including the number of patrons waiting in a security line, can warn security operators when a situation is escalating. This helps organisations to identify potential issues before they become problems, and to make better decisions aimed at improving every area of operations. The real cost of legacy systems Legacy systems were designed to address an organisation’s needs at a specific point in time. As needs change and technology advances, they can lag behind. Some legacy systems limit an organisation’s ability to integrate new technologies, including wireless locks and mobile credentials, into its physical security system. An older ACS can also require constant upgrading and support just to keep working. Parts for these older systems can be difficult to find and are frequently costly. And, when

an ACS is proprietary and heavily integrated into a physical security system, this can further increase maintenance costs. There are also limited options for supporting outdated software and hardware. Unfortunately, this can lead to operational inefficiencies with an overall negative impact on productivity. Increasing ROI by going beyond the door To avoid the long-term setbacks associated with closed systems, organisations need an ACS that will evolve with their ever-changing needs, provide solutions that go beyond the door, and allow them to move to the cloud with confidence. With a flexible, open ACS, organisations can address current requirements and evolve their systems with new technologies as their needs change. An open ACS provides the ability to scale up through additional hardware integrations, bolt-on

software modules, and open software integrations with thirdparty products. Choosing an open ACS solution enables organisations to customise their systems by selecting hardware that addresses their specific security objectives. It can also save time and money by enabling them to reuse existing hardware instead of migrating to an entirely new system. Legacy systems are no match for today’s cybercriminal With the average cost of a data breach being US$3.9 million in damages, it’s never been more important for organisations to be educated on the risks associated with legacy systems and the advantages that a new cybersecure access solution can offer. Access control systems are a powerful infrastructure tool that tend to be overlooked as a potential target for cyberattacks. If a cybercriminal breaches a legacy ACS, not only can they open and close doors without

IN SECURITY | December 2021 | 31

permission. They also have the potential to access restricted areas and gain control over any system that is connected to the network. Once a network has been

Nick Smith

breached, all data becomes vulnerable, including sensitive information stored internally. In order to protect their data and networks, organisations need an

ACS that is secure from server to credential. In addition, they also need an ACS that will help them comply with industry regulations, especially those related to cybersecurity and authentication. Here again, choosing a system that can be adapted to meet evolving requirements is crucial. Conclusion Maintaining a legacy ACS is time-consuming and expensive. It can expose an organisation to new threats, including cyberattacks, and can’t keep up with changing access control needs. Open access control solutions provide an easy path to modernisation. The flexibility of an open architecture solution allows organisations to grow their ACS as their needs change. This empowers them to continually enhance security and generate greater return on their investment. For further information please visit www.genetec.com

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE

Looking to the future Glasgow Science Centre invests in Hanwha Techwin video surveillance

T

he Glasgow Science Centre has invested in a new video surveillance system from Hanwha Techwin to help create a safe environment for visitors who wish to enjoy the Centre’s extensive facilities which include over 400 interactive exhibits, planetarium and a space zone.

34 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

As one of Scotland’s most popular visitor attractions, Glasgow Science Centre, which is located on the south bank of the River Clyde in Glasgow, is an educational charity that seeks to inspire and motivate people to engage with science. Its work is supported by a not-for-profit visitor experience and other revenue

streams, with all the income it generates being reinvested to support its charitable purpose. Major upgrade The contract to install the new video surveillance system, which features cameras sourced from Hanwha Techwin, was awarded to

Scottish Communications Group, one of the UK’s leading independent communication and electronic security system integrators, who installed the original analogue CCTV system when the Centre first opened in 2001. “We have had a close, long-term business relationship with Glasgow Science Centre and are delighted to have had the opportunity to build on the partnership by being entrusted to design, install, commission and maintain the new system”, said Stuart Leslie, Sales Director of the Scottish Communications Group. “The old analogue system had done an excellent job over the years helping to keep visitors safe by ensuring staff and contractors comply with health & safety procedures. However, in terms of features and functionality, as well as the image resolutions of the cameras, the system was not able to deliver the benefits offered by the latest generation of cameras”. Wisenet Cameras A total of 68 new Wisenet cameras have been installed at the Centre by Scottish Communications Group,

48 of which have been deployed as replacements for what was the old existing analogue cameras, whilst 20 additional cameras have been installed in new locations to negate any blind spots and give the Centre’s control room operators greater situational awareness. Stuart Leslie and his colleagues took advantage of the advice available from Hanwha Techwin Europe’s pre-sales team to ensure that the most suitable Wisenet internal and external cameras were specified for each of the 68 camera locations. As a result, 40 cameras were selected from the Wisenet Q IP network series which, with built-in IR illumination, are able to capture clear, sharp 2 and 4-megapxiel images, regardless of lighting conditions. These Bullet and mini-dome cameras also feature Wide Dynamic Range (WDR), which performs at up to 120dB to produce clear images from areas that present a challenging mix of bright and dark areas, such as the Centre’s reception area where strong sunlight is able to stream in. The remaining 28 Bullet, PTZ and mini-dome cameras have been

selected from the Wisenet HD+ analogue series and are able to deliver superb quality 2-megapixel HD images over coaxial cables. Wisenet HD+ cameras minimize the cost and disruption of installing new data cabling as they can support the transmission of HD images using standard coax cabling - without any latency or image loss - at distances of up to 500m. Further, without the need to incur the cost and time of installing encoders, converters or switches, yet more savings can be achieved. Images from the cameras are recorded on either a Pentabrid ‘hybrid’ recorder or a Wisenet NVR, with each of the 5 devices offering up to 12 terabytes of storage. Client Statement “The safety and security of our visitors is always our top priority”, said Roddie Galbraith, Facilities Manager at the Centre. “We have therefore invested in the very latest technology in order to significantly upgrade the capabilities of our video surveillance infrastructure and, in doing so, provide our security colleagues with a powerful tool

IN SECURITY | December 2021 | 35

which will allow them to respond quickly and effectively to any incidents”. “We are very happy with the performance of the new system and are pleased that we could take advantage of the cost-saving benefits of the Wisenet HD+ cameras without compromising on quality or functionality. We believe we now have a video surveillance system which will be fit for purpose for many years to come”. CYBER SECURITY

Best of both worlds How can businesses maintain IT security in a hybrid working model?

B

usinesses now have the green light to go back to work, but your organisation may not be returning to its old working practices. So, if a hybrid model is being adopted, what can you do to ensure that information stays secure? The introduction of more widespread homeworking has certainly piled on the pressure for businesses’ IT security. At the beginning of 2021, QMS International carried out a survey of

38 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

businesses about their cyber security and 75.7% of the respondents reported that they now felt more open to attack. Another 10% reported that they had no confidence in fending one off. And businesses have a right to be worried. According to analysis of reports made to the UK’s Information Commissioners Office (ICO) by CybSafe, the number of ransomware incidents in the first half of 2021 doubled compared to the number reported in the first half of 2020.

Malicious emails have also been redirected to attack those working from home. Data supplied by Darktrace to The Guardian revealed that the proportion of attacks targeting home workers rose from 12% of malicious email traffic before the first lockdown in March 2020 to more than 60% six weeks later. With homeworking becoming more of a permanent fixture in business models, this trend is likely to continue. While hybrid working offers your

team the best of both worlds when it comes to office and home working, it also leaves your business open to the unique risks associated with both, with the added bonus of those linked to transport and travel. But this doesn’t mean you have to abandon this new way of working. With the right processes in place, you can ensure your information stays secure, no matter where your staff are based. First things first – you must carry out a risk assessment. Knowing the precise risks your business faces is key to developing methods of removing or mitigating them, but assessments like this are often overlooked. In fact, QMS’ cyber report found that 30% of respondents admitted that no new information security risk assessments had been carried out, despite changes to working practices. Discover the risks, analyse their likelihood, and then decide if and how they can be controlled. This will give you the grounding you need to build your wider hybrid IT strategy.

Train and test your team With cyber-attacks on the rise and remote workers being more vulnerable, it’s crucial that your hybrid team know what to look for and, just as crucially, how to report anything suspicious. The best way to do this is through training, which can now be carried out very effectively via e-learning. This training should cover common cyber-attacks - such as phishing emails - how to spot them, the fundamentals of social engineering, and how to report suspicious activity. Ideally, this training should be refreshed regularly as new cyber threats emerge. You may also like to include training on the safe use of video calls and how to ensure video cameras are switched off when not in use. To ensure your team have absorbed what they’ve learnt, carry out penetration testing. This involves crafting fake phishing emails and sending them out to your employees. What they do will give you an idea of whether your training has been effective.

Address access When your hybrid team aren’t in the workplace, they will need to access servers and files remotely. This will often be via a VPN (Virtual Private Network), so you need to ensure that this is as secure as possible. Remote workers will also be relying on their home Wi-Fi, but this may not be as secure as the Wi-Fi in your office. Your team should therefore be encouraged to create strong passwords – not the default ones on the base of the router. Workers need to be cautioned against the use of free Wi-Fi hotspots too. It’s possible that your workers may want to use it to work on the train, for example, or in a coffee shop. However, public Wi-Fi is notoriously unsecure, and your workers should be cautioned against using it. Think about physical protection If your workers are going to be travelling between locations, then they are going to have to carry equipment such as laptops, phones and removable media with them. If something is lost or stolen, your business information could be

IN SECURITY | December 2021 | 39

compromised. Indeed, IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach report revealed that around 10% of malicious breaches are due to a physical security compromise. A solid back-up protocol is key to ensuring that any lost information can be recovered. A robust password and access process are also musts – you may want to think about two-factor authentication to make logging in more secure. Make sure you also have a protocol in place so that if your team do report something as lost or stolen, you can act quickly. When working remotely, you need to ensure that your staff keep their physical devices safe too. Equipment should be kept out of sight when not in use and papers stored away. If your workers are printing content, you may also need a safe disposal or 40 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

destruction policy in place. To prevent prying eyes seeing something they shouldn’t, workers should lock their screens when away from their workspace, whether they’re in the office or at home. And if any of your team do want to work while in public, they should be cautioned about the kind of work they perform – who knows who’s sitting next to you? Create a culture of security If you really want to take information security to the next level, you may want to consider a more widereaching measure such as ISO 27001. ISO 27001 is the international Standard for information security management, and it is designed to help organisations integrate information security into every

aspect of business. Its 114 controls tackle every angle of security, including physical, legal, digital and human, bringing them together to enable you to maintain compliance and showcase to employees, customers and stakeholders that you have the processes in place to protect information from theft and corruption. Going forward, it could give you the framework you need to adapt your practices to suit your new hybrid working model and any changes in the future. This article was written by Claire Price of QMS International, one of the UK’s leading ISO certification bodies. For further information please visit www.qmsuk.com

PERIMETER SECURITY

The phone mast predicament

I

Jacksons Fencing specified to secure Gloucestershire 5G mast site

n March 2020, almost overnight, the pandemic forced an unfounded level of uncertainty into all of our lives. This instigated the circulation of conspiracy theories, causing some to think that 5G masts had the potential to spread the virus. According to a survey conducted by the Commission for

42 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

Countering Terrorism, approximately 37% of respondents[1] were aware of this theory, and one third thought it was credible.[2] This sparked a dramatic increase in criminal behaviour toward 5G mast sites, and they quickly became vulnerable to vandalism and arson attacks. Shockingly, in April 2020 alone, 50 masts

were targeted,[3] causing disruption to thousands of lives, homes, and essential services. One example of the extreme vandalism was the April 2020 attack[4] on a 5G mast providing essential mobile connectivity to an NHS Nightingale hospital in Birmingham, disrupting its crucial

services. This was one of 20 suspected targets in one weekend. This demonstrates the urgent need to ensure these sites are properly protected.

appointed to secure a 5G mast site for a telecoms company in Gloucestershire.

End-to-end Solutions Jacksons Fencing worked on this project to protect the site from unauthorised access and intruders by installing secure perimeter fencing. EuroGuard® Combi fencing, which combines steel V mesh panels with timber slats, was specified to conceal the site. This type of fencing also prevents equipment used for vandalism or arson, such as hooks or wires, from being passed through it. Using high-quality materials for each fence panel, such as zinc alloy coated mesh and pressure treated, kiln-dried timber works to protect the fencing from rust, corrosion, rotting, and insect attacks. Panels are secured to posts using unique mesh clips and anti-vandal fixings which can only be accessed from inside the site, making it far more challenging for intruders to break and enter. 5G sites are in high demand and in use around the clock. With this in mind, they require continuous maintenance and frequent upgrades. At the Gloucestershire site, double leaf gates were installed to allow enough room for the maintenance teams to gain access with their vehicles. These gates are polyester powder coated green, this provides an additional layer of protection, which shields the metal fencing from the elements, and gives it a warmer aesthetic.

Paramount Issue 5G masts are considered a critical infrastructure yet they’re frequently targeted by vandals due to their positioning in remote, poorly lit areas, often without robust security systems installed. The mast sites take up to 18 months to construct from scratch, and three months to repair. Therefore, it’s essential that appropriate, protective fencing and high-security systems are specified and installed to deter criminals. This will help prevent any long periods of time without coverage. Various networks are trialling different methods and approaches to attempt to secure these masts. In 2020, Jacksons’ Fencing was IN SECURITY | December 2021 | 43

Value for Money All Jacksons Fencing products are guaranteed for 25 years, providing low lifetime cost due to a reduction in repairs and replacements later down the line. This is ideal for this industry where companies often have a responsibility to care and maintain hundreds of 5G masts and service boxes. Peter Jackson, Jacksons’ Fencing Managing Director, comments: “It was a real privilege to be involved in this hugely important project which aimed to secure and protect this critical infrastructure.” “Hearing that these new 5G sites are becoming a target by vandals is disappointing, but I am delighted that Jacksons’ Fencing has been able to help with this issue by installing fencing and security solutions to protect the mast and those around 44 | December 2021 | IN SECURITY

the Gloucestershire area.” He continues: “We hope that with the security solutions we’ve implemented, people in the area, their homes, and the service industry can continue without any disruption as a result of lost connectivity. Working closely with the telecoms company’s team means the 5G mast is fit for purpose for the community now, and well into the future.” About Jacksons Fencing Jacksons Fencing is a family business founded in 1947 in Kent.
