COVER STORY

Access anywhere Cloud capability can transform the way you manage access

T

he business benefits of “managing from anywhere” are driving demand for cloud solutions — within security and beyond. In a recent survey of 1,000 decisionmakers in diverse organizations across Europe, 78% anticipated increasing their use of hosted cloud services*. In 2021 alone, public cloud infrastructure is forecasted to grow by 35%**.

For access control and security in general, a cloud solution makes system management easier and more convenient. Implemented as part of many digital transformation strategies, it helps companies to design administration processes which are streamlined, locationindependent and efficient. Incedo™ access control from ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions is created for businesses who need a

security solution which grows with them. It frees security managers to work remotely, too, while maintaining complete control over their building’s access points. Incedo connects security software and hardware within a single platform. To accommodate the restless change and disruption of business life, Incedo enables scaling up or down on demand. New cloud management functionality built into

Incedo Business Cloud keeps security and facility managers in control of their premises, from wherever they happen to be right now. For any size of organization, switching to Incedo Business Cloud unlocks powerful cloud benefits with no high upfront costs and ongoing cost-effectiveness. Cloud management helps companies control costs as they control access Incedo Business Cloud solves many pressing daily challenges of access management. Managers no longer need to be on-site to handle day-today security. Incedo Business Cloud operates 24/7 from any PC with an internet connection. Installing the system is easy, with no complex integrations required. Software updates are regular and automatic; real-time reports and analytics are available with a few clicks. Incedo Business Cloud works out of the box via a cost-efficient subscription service. Onboarding is fast. Security managers can also feel confident about confidentiality: Business and user data are safeguarded with an Information Security Management System certified to ISO/IEC 27001. According to the “Wireless

Access Control Report 2021”, more than one-third of companies now use cloud-based management to power their access control***. This proportion is likely to grow in the years ahead. Hybrid working is already booming. Working practices will become ever more convenienceoriented, flexible and mobile: “At work” increasingly describes a state of being, rather than a specific place. For facility and security managers, a cloud software solution makes budgeting more predictable. It removes the need to hire additional in-house IT support or permanent maintenance teams: Managers know ahead of time how much resource to allocate and can scale infrastructure up or down quickly. Diverse doors, devices and demands are handled by one system Survey data suggests that companies will continue to manage access control using both locally hosted and off-site cloud solutions or Access Control as a Service****. The flexible Incedo ecosystem enables easy migration between all these local and cloud management options — at any time and in every direction. Incedo Business Cloud is more efficient for everyone, from installers

to access control end-users. A modular, platform approach makes both procurement and operation simpler. Managers choose the security hardware and credentials they need together with the appropriate management system. All too often, security procurement involves difficult compromises: A system which works perfectly for one door or department leaves another with a solution which doesn’t quite meet its needs. Incedo eliminates these frustrating compromises. Multiple types of ASSA ABLOY wireless digital lock and wired ASSA ABLOY wall readers can secure doors. A choice of card and token credentials — or mobile keys on a smartphone — helps users enjoy safe and convenient access to, and movement around, any site or building. Incedo in action: a major manufacturer with multiple door types to manage At newly built commercial premises in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, power-tool manufacturer Makita stocks and distributes batteries, and runs wholesale supply logistics. They searched for a single, intuitive system to control every access point.

IN SECURITY | October 2021 | 5

Yet, as at many sensitive commercial sites, not every door or opening is the same. Makita needed an access control solution with a comprehensive range of devices, to secure escape doors, entrances, interior doors and more. “The diversity of access control devices available for an Incedo system was a decisive factor,” says Makita’s Richard Cimerman. The Incedo platform connects the security software and hardware which Makita needs within a single, seamless ecosystem. The range of Incedo-enabled devices and awardwinning door hardware convinced them — for this site and for future premises and refurbishments around Slovakia. The new Banská Bystrica facility has an Incedo system controlling access through main entrances, fire doors and emergency exit doors, as well as interior doors fitted with Aperio battery-powered electronic 6 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

escutcheons. User-friendly Incedo Business software manages and monitors everything together from a single control panel. It filters and restricts employee and visitor access to specific areas of the plant. The fully modular, platform-based Incedo solution incorporates wired and wireless door locking devices from across the ASSA ABLOY range; card, token and secure mobile key credentials which can be used interchangeably; and a growing range of third-party security solutions. Makita’s system can be upgraded at any time to manage CCTV, video surveillance and alarms alongside access and door entry. When security demands change at Makita Banská Bystrica, their Incedo system will adapt. With Incedo software, Makita can switch between local and cloud managed solutions whenever they choose. System size is scalable up or down, anytime and on demand, as security needs or

space usage change. They are in total control of how their premises are managed — now and in the future. Incedo™ Business Cloud embodies ASSA ABLOY’s vision to create a safer and more open world, keeping everyone on the move. New chapter opens for centuries-old cathedral with IDIS video IDIS end-to-end video is protecting a new, purpose-built visitor centre at Canterbury Cathedral, part of a £25 million renovation project transforming one of the UK’s most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The seven-year programme, preserving and safeguarding the fifteen-centuries-old masterpiece of English Gothic architecture – and mother church of the worldwide Anglican communion - includes the addition of a new, purpose-built welcome centre for visitors. The centre, housing retail facilities, a viewing gallery and community studio exhibition space, is protected with a best-in-class video solution which combines discreet monitoring with high-performance image capture. Specialist systems integrator Hall & Kay Security Engineering was tasked with delivering a solution that would be affordable, easy-to-use and allow for comprehensive real-time monitoring, while ensuring reliable recording without data loss. And because this was part of a much wider project, the video technology also had to be fast and easy to install – essential for avoiding project overruns in this complex, multidisciplinary construction environment, and preventing any delays to the new welcome centre’s opening. Based on previous experience, Hall & Kay had no hesitation recommending IDIS end-to-end tech, incorporating cameras, recorders, VMS, and essential peripherals. This IDIS Korean-made tech also gives Canterbury Cathedral the assurance of trusted manufacturing origin and high-level cybersecurity protection, with its inherent, multi-layered encryptions and proprietary protocols to safeguard sensitive video data. To give high-definition video coverage of the welcome 8 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

centre’s entrances, retail area and exhibition spaces, Hall & Kay installed IDIS Full HD DC-4223WRX IR dome cameras. These vandal-resistant models come equipped with varifocal lenses, true WDR and IR LED to deliver crisp, clear images even in challenging and variable lighting conditions. They connect to three 16-channel DD-1216 NVRs to handle recording and deliver 480ips live view with no visible latency. Easy plug-and-play installation allowed for seamless and rapid connectivity and mutual two-factor authentication of devices streamlined cybersecurity measures, the cornerstone of IDIS DirectIP® solutions. The licence-free IDIS Centre VMS gives the cathedral’s constable and his security team complete visual awareness and easy control tools for efficient management, plus the ability to configure specific user permissions to give senior staff and system administrators timely access to video footage. The IDIS cameras and NVRs discreetly blend with the centre’s architecture without detracting from the visitor experience, while providing effective real-time monitoring and enabling a rapid incident response capability. “The choice of IDIS video for this most sensitive of sites is testament to the reliability, quality and cybersecurity of our Korean-made tech,” adds Jamie Barnfield, Senior Sales Director, IDIS Europe. “This is just one of many projects we are working on with Hall & Kay in line with the IDIS philosophy of building sustainable strategic partnerships with integrators and end user customers.” For more information, visit www.idisglobal.com

Interphone teams up with amazon key for business to streamline Amazon deliveries to commercial residential properties

Interphone, the security systems and building technology integrator, has teamed up with Amazon Key for Business to enable easier, more efficient Amazon deliveries to multi-dwelling units (MDUs) in the UK. As an Amazon service provider, Interphone will install and maintain the Key for Business device free of charge to qualifying building owners and managers within the commercial residential marketplace. Key for Business gives Amazon drivers the ability to enter buildings and deliver packages without assistance, eliminating driver access issues and reducing the need for redeliveries. Residents can receive Amazon packages safely, whether they are home or away, and building staff can spend less time managing deliveries. “Key for Business will be available free of charge to building owners and managers for any multi dwelling unit (MDU) with eight flats or more,” explains Julian Synett, CEO of Interphone Limited. “This innovative, cloud-based solution offers both financial savings and operational improvements by eliminating the need for onsite staff to handle incoming Amazon deliveries, while providing enhanced convenience for residents.” Interphone will supply, install, and maintain the Key for Business device, which seamlessly integrates with a building’s existing access control system with

Amazon’s delivery app. Once fitted, Amazon drivers receive authorised, time-limited building entry, so they can efficiently deliver packages to an individual property or secure drop-off point during Amazon’s broad delivery window. Key for Business helps enhance the security of buildings, residents, and their Amazon packages with multi-factor authentication that ensures drivers are quickly verified in real-time via the cloud, and can only access a Key for Business-enabled building when carrying an Amazon package for that address. Three criteria must be met for a driver to gain entry – they must be physically onsite (live geolocation tracking); have the package for that address on their vehicle; and be within the specified delivery time window. “The installation and ongoing maintenance will be provided by our field-based engineering team that operates across London, the Home Counties and the southeast of England. These experienced engineers possess all the necessary qualifications, accreditations and training to operate safely and legally, whilst delivering the highest levels of service. We will also have direct access to Amazon support to ensure we can respond quickly to any issues,” concludes Synett. The new features include a 7” touch screen handsfree video monitor, a 3.5” touch screen handsfree video monitor, an audio IP telephone and the Cloudbox which allows additional programmable input/output to be added to the system as well as being a gateway to using the app in apartments which don’t have a video monitor. The new hands free video monitors complement the existing 3.5” touch screen videophone with handset. Up to 16 devices can be included in each apartment with advanced cascading flexibility if required. James Gray, National Sales Manager at Videx, said: “IP controlled entry is one of the most convenient and flexible solutions available. The huge benefit of IP technology is that it doesn’t require dedicated wiring infrastructure and can be used on existing networks. These networks can be shared with other technologies 10 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

such as CCTV, building management and many others including FTTH/PON infrastructures. “By adding even more features to our IP offering, we’re offering great flexibility and greater convenience. A new user interface has been introduced which complements the look and feel of the system across all platforms and can also be rolled out to existing systems through a firmware upgrade. “What’s more, our IP system is managed through a simple PC wizard programme which allows the installer or engineer to completely customise the system to the building’s requirements. The wizard will detect all the devices on the system allowing each to be setup as required and will also advise of any new firmware available. The 7” monitor with full touch screen also has a number of added features which builds on the vast range of features already offered on other video monitors in the range. These include third party camera integration using RTSP with support for H264 & H265, home automation integration, picture in picture viewing, a built-in web server to access event logs, captured images and videos to play back and an optional Wifi connection. Further features can be added with a simple firmware upgrade. To find out more, please visit the Videx website: www.videxuk.com/the-ipure-ip-range-now-with-anarray-of-new-features

Equip glass doors with the right electronic access control without disrupting aesthetics As facility managers, designers and building specifiers will attest, it can be challenging to find the right electronic access solution for a glass door. When glass is the focal point of an entrance design, cabling is not an option. Matching appropriate devices to the opening for a meeting room, office, treatment suite or any other glass door often involves compromises. Organizations may not find their ideal combination of security level, convenience, design and functionality. But this need not be the case, because battery powered access control is now available in multiple styles and formats. Such devices can fit almost any type of glass door, cable- and wire-free. A minimal footprint ensures they leave the door’s aesthetic as it was designed. Already trusted in multiple settings, and for all security levels, Aperio® door devices are built to integrate with almost any access system. These wireless locks work seamlessly with systems from over 100 OEMs — and counting. Aperio offers end-users the flexibility to affordably expand or modify an access system’s coverage. If needs change at a facility — say, meeting rooms are fitted with new glass doors — it’s quick and easy for an installer to fit Aperio locks and integrate them online with the main control panel. A choice of devices to match needs to the glass door — without disrupting design For simplicity in fitting to almost any interior glass door, the battery powered Aperio C100 Cylinder combines with a range of locksets to add powerful access control which is easy to integrate with any new or existing system. 12 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

The Aperio H100 Handle packs the power and flexibility of access control into an award-winning, low profile, wireless handle. Anywhere it is possible to replace an existing DIN, SCAN or FIN standard format lever, an H100 can easily be fitted and integrated with the access system. A third option, the E100 Escutcheon brings fullpowered, feature-rich access control to any higher security glass door such as a boardroom or a treatment suite with valuable equipment. Privacy functions, and the option to add a PINpad for multi-factor authentication, are also available with the Aperio E100. Users open all doors, including Aperio wireless controlled doors, with the same credential. Aperio is compatible with almost any standard RFID technology, including iCLASS® and MIFARE®, as well as secure mobile access with Seos®. In corporate headquarters, commercial properties, healthcare premises and many more settings, all over the world, ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions has the experience in providing modern architectural security solutions for glass with a contemporary aesthetic. Because Aperio devices operate cable-free at the door — communicating with a central system securely over the air via wireless hubs in the case of an online integration — they can be fitted without disrupting an interior design, however minimalist. On your bike, with Marshalls landscape protection Marshalls Landscape Protection, part of hard landscaping manufacturer Marshalls Group, is delighted to introduce the latest addition to its Active Travel Solutions range: the new Cycle Segregation Unit, designed to help create safer and more accessible urban spaces for cyclists. Across the country, there has been a clear push for the adoption of greener, alternative forms of travel, such as walking and cycling, to relieve the pressure on public transport routes. In fact, the UK Government recently announced a £338 million package to boost cycling and walking uptake across the country, including funding to build hundreds of miles of high-quality cycle lanes. The Cycle Segregation Unit has been developed to help local authorities, specifiers and highways professionals deliver on this campaign by creating safer and more sustainable travel infrastructure, as well as encouraging a more active approach to commuting in local communities. Manufactured from concrete and with a smooth grey finish, Marshall’s Cycle Segregation Unit is a versatile kerb solution, designed to act as a demarcation tool and safely segregate cyclists from trafficked areas. With a 45-degree splayed profile on the cycleway side, the unit provides a soft transition between the carriageway and the cycle lane, while also enabling cyclists of all abilities to use the cycleway without fear of colliding with a steep kerb. Meanwhile, the outside kerb side features a bullnose profile, intended to stop vehicles from mounting the unit and potentially endangering the cyclist. 14 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

Designed to be installed in both new or existing schemes where the highway requires a redesign, the concrete segregation unit requires minimal maintenance and is compliant with the performance levels set out in the European Standard BS EN: 1340. Speaking about the launch, Roger Knight, Head of NPD and Engineering at Marshalls Landscape Protection said: “With the ongoing climate emergency, everyone is looking at how we can do our bit to help the environment and be greener. Swapping the car or the bus for a bicycle is a great way to reduce our carbon footprint, as well as helping us to stay fit and healthy. Of course, if we are to encourage more people to get on their bike, it’s imperative that they are provided with a safe cycling route. This is where our Cycle Segregation Unit comes in. Manufactured here in Britain, it’s designed to help make our towns and cities safer and more accessible for cyclists.” Marshalls Landscape Protection offers a number of Active Travel Solutions to enable the creation of safer and more inviting urban spaces for cyclists and pedestrians, including lane delineation, traffic calming and social distancing solutions. For more information about the new Cycle Segregation Unit, as well as Marshalls Landscape Protection’s wider Active Travel Solutions range, please visit www.marshalls.co.uk/commercial/landscapeprotection/active-travel-solutions

The Keyholding Company and Keynetics partner to launch keybox-enabled alarm response service Tech-enabled mobile security service provider, The Keyholding Company, have partnered with disruptive electronic key safe supplier, Keynetics, to shake up traditional keyholding, alarm response and access services by removing the need for external keyholders, saving clients thousands and significantly improving response times. The new offering is part of The Keyholding Company‘s Smart Access service, a range of smart lock solutions for businesses that utilises cloud-connected devices to streamline mobile security and access management. The collaboration uses Keynetics’ SentriKey® lock box, the only key safe in the UK approved for use in commercial properties, to store keys on-site and at the point of need. This hardware is combined with The Keyholding Company’s technology used by their extensive nationwide network of response officers. When an alarm is triggered through the partnership’s integration, the best placed response officer automatically receives alarm response job information and a unique one-time access code for the SentriKey® key safe at the property, via their mobile app. This enables the responder to travel directly to the alarm activation without collecting keys from a key vault, slashing alarm response times. This solution also removes the need for external keyholders, as physical keys are kept on-site within the SentriKey® lock box. The partnership calculates that businesses could save up to 93% on their keyholding and third-party access service costs by implementing this new combined offering. The Keyholding Company’s CEO, Charlie Gordon Lennox, views the partnership as a key step towards more intelligent and client-centric mobile security services. “Keynetics are a leading supplier in the industry 16 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

Security & Safety Things becomes Azena

Security & Safety Things is announcing that it has rebranded to Azena, a new brand name that underscores the company’s corporate growth and leading-edge smart camera platform and positions it for the next chapter in its ambitious plans for redefining video analytics. With a growing slate of global customer and partner collaborations and expanding geographic coverage, Azena will continue to increase the value of its platform for systems integrators and end customers. Since its market introduction in 2018, Azena has grown to more than 120 employees spread across its headquarters in Munich, its technology Innovation Accelerator facility in Pittsburgh, and another development hub in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, all supporting the Azena open platform for smart cameras. The Azena platform is comprised of an open operating system for cameras and an Application Store with nearly 100 Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled video analytics apps. It enables smart cameras to simultaneously run multiple apps directly on the device. Integrators can flexibly add or change apps on one or multiple cameras as needed for their customers and use any of the 15 cameras from six different manufacturer partners in a variety of form factors. “Systems integrators play a crucial role in connecting the video analytic edge devices on our platform into the larger system landscape for a truly data-driven approach to security, operational intelligence and automation,” said Hartmut Schaper, chief executive officer, Azena. “Our new identity as Azena positions us for improved name recognition and market presence as we continue to add functionality and the potential for expansion into new markets for our systems integrator partners.” The Azena Application Store features apps that address more than 40 different use cases in at least 25 different vertical markets, ranging from traditional perimeter security, retail loss prevention and occupancy management to stadium security and even the unique needs of aquaculture. Some examples of use cases include: • One U.S. professional hockey team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, is using the Azena platform to monitor crowding at its stadium entrances, license plate recognition for more efficient stadium parking and heat mapping for improved layouts of its fan merchandise retail outlets.

• An oil drilling company is deploying smart cameras running the Azena OS so operations staff can remotely monitor any pumping disruptions in the oil fields. • A chemical plant is monitoring its locations for the presence of smoke to enhance workplace safety measures. Systems integrator Prosegur, one of the world’s largest security companies, has announced its collaboration with Azena to use analytics on the edge as part of its Security Operations Center as a service offering. Johnson Controls latest Pro Gen4 cameras deliver a continued commitment to smarter buildings with new Edge-AI solutions

Johnson Controls, the global leader for smart, healthy and sustainable buildings has announced the launch of Tyco Illustra Pro Gen4 2MP, 4MP and 8MP Edge-AI mini-domes. These latest mini-domes are part of an everincreasing portfolio of IP cameras that focus on delivering AI classifications, customisable rules and accurate event notification at the edge, while still maintaining the core attributes of ease of installation and enhanced cyber security. “Edge-AI is a critical building block for security eco-systems as our industry evolves from traditional centralized and on-premise processing models to more flexible, powerful and cost-efficient distributed edge and cloud architectures. With the Illustra ProGen 4 cameras, we are focusing on the strategic importance of a solution for our customers, who require a high level of security without disrupting business operations.,” said Gopal Paripally, vice president of engineering and technology, Security Products for Johnson Controls. This new line of cameras provides commercial and light commercial organizations with the capability to respond to incidents faster than ever before as AI enhances the speed and accuracy of forensic searches. This is achieved by embedding object classification capabilities directly on security cameras. Events can be narrowed to classes such as a person, car, bus, motorcycle or bicycle. Settings can be adjusted on each camera with a variety of analytic rules that notify security or business owners when people or objects are detected – for example if someone crosses a perimeter or is lingering around a restricted area. This functionality automates manual surveillance processes

and enables organizations to use video surveillance as an increasingly preventive tool - literally stopping incidents before they happen.  With an integrated recess mount, QR code and Illustra mobile app configuration and application profiles that automatically adjust the camera’s settings based on the chosen profile, Illustra Pro Gen4 cameras are designed to be simple to use and easy to install. Kuhrt, CEO of Messe Essen is pleased to say. “We offer the industry a top-class platform to present new solutions compactly and efficiently to decision-makers, buyers and other experts. Security Essen covers the complete range of the security industry, and does so within short distances.” The focus of the range of products and services is on innovations in the field of electronic and mechanical security technology as well as cyber security, services and fire protection. The fair will be rounded off by an extensive accompanying programme with informative lectures. Among the exhibitors registered so far are Carl Wittkopp, Deutsche Telekom, Hikvision, Kale Kilit aswell as Salto Systems - and also the company ABI- Sicherheitssysteme. ABI Sales Manager Joachim Schairer: “Security Essen is the most important platform for us as a manufacturer of electronic security technology. The entire security industry meets there, which gives us the optimal opportunity to present our innovations. The fair also offers us a unique option to make new, relevant contacts within the industry.” Extensive fair with short distances Its bandwidth is what makes Security Essen so attractive for the security industry. With the areas of video; access, mechatronics, mechanics, systems & perimeter; fire, burglary & systems as well as services & digital networking security, all segments of the industry are to be found under one roof. “This successful concept stands for short distances, direct discussions and intensive professional contacts,” 20 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

says fair project manager Julia Jacob. Security Essen offers companies numerous opportunities to present themselves to an international audience. Exhibitors benefit from individual stand options, theme-specific joint areas or time- and cost- saving complete packages. The accompanying programme offers further added value for visitors and exhibitors. Together with the technical training institute Haus der Technik, Messe Essen is organising the two-day fire protection forum. The Digital Networking Security Congress is also scheduled for two days of the fair. Here, the speakers will focus on security in networks, IT security, interfaces and cyber threats. Particularly in demand: access control systems and video security technology Despite pandemic conditions, the security industry market developed well last year the Bundesverband der Sicherheitswirtschaft (BDSW) (German Federal Association of the Security Industry) reported an estimated increase in turnover of four percent to 9.21 billion euros* for its sector. The German market for electronic security technology grew by 1.6 percent to 4.695 billion euros in 2020. Access control systems (plus 4.3 percent) and video security technology (plus 7.1 percent) grew particularly strongly here*. ABISicherheitssysteme sees a trend above all in products that are becoming smarter. “This development is caused, among other things, by the massive advance of cloud solutions. In addition, security technology will communicate more and more with building automation and partly merge,” is the assessment of sales manager Joachim Schairer. Privacy policy Genetec transforms evidence-sharing and operations for the UK’s fastest-growing tech and business hub

T

o attain the highest standards of security and privacy for its tenants and visitors the iconic estate is building its security and operations on Genetec technologies. Here East is an innovation and technology campus located at the heart of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, UK. Once the Press and Broadcast Centre for the 2012

22 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

Olympic Games, it is now home to a thriving community of over 4,500 creatives, academics, and innovators. Designed as a mini-city, the campus is a mixed-use development that houses offices, retail units, university facilities, cultural exhibitions, and public spaces. Notable tenants include BT Sport, the V&A Museum, Sports Interactive, and the studios of noted choreographer

Wayne McGregor. In total, the site offers 1.2 million square feet of flexible space and caters to a wide range of visitors. The previous video management system was still functioning. Yet, Here East’s Head of Security, Leighton Jones, was familiar with the Genetec unified platform and was confident it could deliver more. The advanced capabilities of the

Genetec system would enable his team to gain a deeper understanding of the environment, resolve incidents in real-time and ensure a positive user experience. “Here East is a truly iconic location with a diverse list of high calibre visitors and tenants,” explains Jones. “I wanted to be able to say we use the best technology available and in my experience that is Genetec.” Here East has begun a multi-year phased adoption of Genetec solutions, starting with the deployment of Genetec Clearance to modernise data handling and the secure sharing of digital evidence. Clearance simplifies evidence sharing and enhances GDPR compliance Like many organisations, the implementation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has led Here East to revisit its processes for the sharing of video surveillance footage. Each time Here East received a validated evidence request, operators burned footage onto physical storage media such as a CD or a USB stick. The process was time-consuming and also created chain-of-custody issues. Here East had no control over how that footage was stored and shared by others.

“It wasn’t a situation I was comfortable with,” explains Jones. “We find ourselves needing to share footage internally and externally. We need to retain controls on our data.” All digital evidence is now collected, shared, and distributed through Genetec Clearance. The team at Here East can put appropriate safeguards in place to minimise the risk of footage being inappropriately shared or lost. For example, it can specify viewing rights for specific users, set time limits, and revoke

access to previously shared footage. The automatic redaction features available within Genetec Clearance have also streamlined the processing of requests for video evidence. Under the terms of the EU GDPR, any citizen can submit a subject access request, with Article 15 of the legislation presenting specific challenges concerning video surveillance. Article 15 states “the right to obtain a copy… shall not adversely affect the rights and freedoms of others.” Video surveillance operators

IN SECURITY | October 2021 | 23

must redact the identities of multiple other third parties in relevant frames of video before footage can be shared. On a busy night, the canalside restaurants and bars on the Here East site can contain 1,000 people in a single camera’s field of view. Before the user had to spend significant time manually redacting the identifies of innocent parties in the footage. With Genetec Clearance, that task is instant and automated. Improved incident reporting capabilities Genetec Clearance has bolstered Here East’s incident analysis capabilities, simplifying the process of reporting back to the senior management. Each month the Here East team runs an automated report breaking 24 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

down incidents by time, date, and location. It then uses this data to make recommendations surrounding security operations and the deployment of resources. Where it’s applicable they run educational workshops for tenants. For example, phone snatching and bike theft are two of the most common crimes in their London borough. By closely monitoring the data, Here East can take proactive steps to detect, deter, and discourage perpetrators from operating on the Here East site. “It’s all well and good having the data but the most important thing is being able to visualise it, spot the meaningful patterns, and take the right preventative actions,” explains Jones. “Genetec Clearance makes this seamless”.

The foundations for future growth Here East is still in the early phases of a long-term rollout with Genetec but is already benefitting from a unified approach to security, digital evidence-sharing, and operations. Further deployments will see the innovative site continue to work closely with Genetec to maximise value, push the boundaries of the technology and exceed the expectations of its tenants. “We’re continuing the legacy of the 2012 Olympics and have ambitious plans for the day-to-day management of this iconic site,” concludes Jones. “Our tenants expect a gold medal standard service and we have no intentions to disappoint”. Artificial Intelligence Act Gabriele Mazzini, lawyer of DG Connect, spoke with Euralarm about the Regulation on Artificial Intelligence, following the release by Euralarm of a Position Paper on the EC proposal

E

uralarm recently released a Position Paper on the EC proposal for a Regulation on Artificial Intelligence. The Position Paper follows some informal discussions with DG CONNECT and contains proposals on several articles in the Regulation on Artificial Intelligence. Following the release of the Position Paper Euralarm spoke to Gabriele Mazzini, lawyer of DG Connect and in the lead for the proposal.

26 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

First-ever legal framework on AI When asked to briefly explain the Regulation on Artificial Intelligence, also called the Artificial Intelligence Act, Gabriele Mazzini replied that the Artificial Intelligence Act is the result of a process a preparatory work that started in 2018, when a high-level expert group on artificial intelligence was appointed to provide advice to the Commission. The overall aim of the proposal is to make the rules for the development and use of AI consistent across the EU and thereby

ensure legal certainty, encourage investment and innovation in AI, and build public trust that AI systems are used in ways that respect fundamental rights and European values. In 2020 the Commission adopted a White Paper that was sent out for consultation and got more than 1200 comments. That input helped inform the proposal for the harmonized regulatory framework on AI, which based on the NLF approach. The AI Act is currently the first-ever proposed legal framework

on artificial intelligence. Broad definition The history of Artificial Intelligence goes away back. The term was first used in the 1950s. Gabriele Mazzini explained that, on the basis of a recent report by the Commission Joint Research Center there are more than 50 definitions of AI, making it very complex and difficult to find common grounds. Considering that the greatest majority of EU countries are members of OECD as well as others non-European countries, it was decided to take inspiration from the definition of AI adopted by the OECD in its principles on Artificial Intelligence. In the Artificial Intelligence Act AI is defined in Article 3 and this is supplemented by Annex I, containing a suite of software development frameworks that encompass machine learning, expert and logic systems, and Bayesian or statistical approaches.

A software product featuring these approaches and meeting the requirements of the definition stated in Article 3 will be considered AI for the purposes of the Act. The Act distinguishes three categories of AI uses: prohibited AI uses, high-risk AI uses, and systems with transparency risks. The proposal does not regulate the technology as such, but specific uses. In general, the approach is that the higher the risk, the stricter the rules (risk-based approach). Prohibited uses of AI When asked which uses of AI are prohibited, Gabriele Mazzini replied that there are four main categories. The first two relate to the manipulation of a person’s behavior or exploitation of a person’s vulnerabilities due to their age, physical, or mental disability. Also prohibited are the uses consisting in forms of social credit scoring by governments. The fourth category

relates to real-time remote biometric identification in publicly accessible spaces by law enforcement. An exception is made for certain time-limited public safety scenarios such as serious criminal activities. It is up to the member states if they want to make use of the exception. The AI Act is intended to apply as lex specialis with respect to the rules on the processing of biometric data contained in Article 10 of the Law Enforcement Directive. Also, the uses of remote biometric identification are already regulated by existing law, namely the GDPR.” High-risk classification The AI Act also defines high-risk AI uses. Gabriele Mazzini explained that the AI Act considers an AI system high-risk if it is used as a safety component of a product that is covered by existing single market harmonization legislation and the product is required to undergo a

IN SECURITY | October 2021 | 27

third-party conformity assessment. These mandatory third-party conformity checks will incorporate the AI Act’s requirements after the legislation is passed. In addition, other specifically listed AI systems deployed in number of sectors are also deemed to be high-risk to safety or fundamental rights. The Commission can expand this list through a simplified process without new legislation. The Act relies on member state regulators for enforcement and sanctions, but consistency will be ensured by a European level board. Fruitful cooperation with stakeholders When asked how important the comments and suggestions of stakeholders have been for the drafting of the AI Act, Mr. Mazzini answered that their contributions were very important. It is important to consult and as far as possible have a dialogue with stakeholders during the design of regulatory frameworks. Now the proposal is out to the European Parliament and the Council, which will pursue their own debates. Parliamentary committees, responsible for the preparatory work and the Parliament itself meet in public, so stakeholders can follow the discussions on the proposal and make sure that their voice is heard by the decision-makers. 28 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

ACCESS CONTROL

Game changer Access Control Integration in a Post-COVID-19 World by Alex Holmström, Sales Director, ACRE International The COVID-19 pandemic changed how numerous systems operate within the security industry, and access control is just one component of that. Fortunately, many access control solutions on the market today already contain ideal security features for a post-pandemic environment. With that being said, the virus still presents new 30 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

challenges to communities and businesses as they begin to open back up. As we all emerge with new safety procedures, security manufacturers have considered the demands that have evolved since the pandemic (such as touchless solutions, occupancy management, and more), and have honed in on these features to provide security

solutions in this new era. Access Control Integration PostCOVID-19 As organizations reopen and now have different safety requirements, security solutions must integrate and incorporate these new demands without any type of compromise. This begs the question, how should

access control be integrated into newer security systems post-COVID-19? For any kind of integration to be successful, it’s vital for access control solutions to be open platform and highly flexible to integrate with newer security technologies. This brings us to visitor management and building automation systems integration. The introduction of touchless visitor management has been a huge development in the industry. By streamlining security with its ability to integrate with access control, this is a highly beneficial system for organizations seeking a lowresistance, touchless solution for authorizing short-term entry. Visitor management software integration should allow both operators and occupants a robust comprehension of the flow of people in and out of areas located within the building. By aligning the interests of building managers and their residents, whether that entails screening for those who may be infectious or monitoring the building’s physical occupancy, this solution benefits all of those involved. Flexible security practices already change the way we live, and

work, and will continue to present significant changes for the security industry in a post-pandemic world. Integrated security solutions have a vital role in protecting the safety of employees as they return to work and the ever-evolving updates that will be taking place as communities adopt a new normal. Cloud-Based Access Control and Integration Speaking of flexible integration, a significant change to access control over the last few years involves its’ transition to the cloud. With this functionality, we see more value with cloud services where specific individuals’ needs are met more simply, and cost-effectively. Because of the cloud, system installers and integrators now have the option to switch to a servicebased business model that provides recurring subscription-based monthly revenue. Instead of just selling traditional hardware-based systems or service agreements, they can now offer full-service cloud solutions that can include system health checks, cybersecurity functions, and other professional services. For companies realizing that

newer security technologies can effectively solve challenges by helping their business scale, provide seamless integration, and IT support, cloud-based access control is an ideal option. In fact, it’s the best solution for small-to medium-businesses that are looking to upgrade their security in the post-pandemic world but don’t have the fully fleshed-out security team to manage it. It’s essential to search for an access control provider that can meet these new demands without any compromise, and cloud-based access control typically serves as a very flexible solution that can streamline with ease when integrating with other devices such as visitor management and building automation. Users looking for updated access control integration should search for manufacturers that meet the following requirements. Touchless Access Control Devices Touchless devices have been in high demand as organizations are opening back up. With touchless access control devices like Bluetooth readers and touch-free exit buttons, staff can minimize contact while still maintaining proper security

procedures. For example, with Vanderbilt’s access control solution, ACT365, and ACT pro, users can deploy new credentials with no physical unit, and authorized visitors can be emailed a QR code that will grant them access to the building in a hands-free way. In fact, the spearhead of ACT365’s benefits is that it is hosted in the cloud and therefore delivers remote access and instant management to protect your premises. Access control and video management are key security systems and having a touchless, remote solution creates a complete system, delivers a force that gives business owners far greater visibility and control of their property. Occupancy Management for Social Distancing Access control systems that offer occupancy management are a great addition to security as users 32 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

can manage and audit occupancy levels to ensure social distancing. Automated people counting systems provide a method of counting and limiting access to certain areas. For example, operators can enable a maximum occupancy level to prevent overcrowding within a building or a room. Contract Traceability Reporting Contact traceability can provide reports that enable organizations to monitor areas or zones where an individual has potentially contracted the virus. It features push notifications that can be sent to employees that encourage testing if they have encountered an infected individual while at their place of work. Real-Time Cleaning Requirements This feature can provide alarms when thresholds are met to alert cleaning staff. For example, a

building supervisor can set points on different areas in the building to alert the cleaning staff when areas have reached the level of re-cleansing. The past year has presented numerous security challenges to communities and businesses. As organizations start actively planning to open their workplaces safely, security providers need to equip customers with intelligent and reliable strategies to help create an overall safer environment for staff and visitors. Stakeholders searching for an upgraded security system as they return to the office need to remember to select a solution capable of flexible integration, scalability, and post-pandemic protection without security compromise. VIDEO SURVEILLANCE

Is your video solution on the Edge? Uri Guterman, Head of Product & Marketing for Hanwha Techwin Europe, explains how we have arrived at the Edge and why it provides a pathway to the introduction of new, exciting, innovative and sustainable video surveillance

B

ack in the days when there was just analogue-based CCTV, you would have needed a locally based video cassette recorder (VCR) if you wished to retain the video evidence captured by your security cameras. This meant having to buy a large number of video tapes to ensure the images could be stored for up to 30 days or longer, as each tape could only store a limited amount of video before it needed to be swapped out. Organisations with

34 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

multiple sites could also choose to remotely monitor images transmitted via PSTN, ASDL or expensive dedicated leased lines to a central control room. With the arrival of IP network based video surveillance, users were given the option of conveniently storing large amounts of video data onto a network video recorder (NVR) or server, and a major benefit of this was that there was no longer a need to clog up the network by transmitting video footage of scenes

where nothing important was happening. As a result, event driven monitoring, which is also known as exception reporting, became an accepted method of bringing an incident to a control room operators’ attention. If and when required, operators could also quickly and easily retrieve pre and post event images of any incident. The benefit of this became even more apparent with the introduction of multi-pixel cameras, when there was a need for the captured video

data to share the available bandwidth with whatever else was being transmitted around the network. Many security managers will no doubt have been at the receiving end of a “Don’t even think about it!” comment from their organisation’s IT team, who were not prepared to take the risk that the transmission of mission critical business data might be disrupted. Although most large video surveillance systems installed in recent years are likely to be using network resources which are isolated from a company’s main network infrastructure, the opportunity to minimise bandwidth requirements and the associated costs, continues to be a major benefit. Processing power It needed, however, a manufacturer such as Hanwha Techwin, to lead the way by developing chipsets with sufficient processing power to enable the data to be recorded and stored via SD card slots built into its cameras, instead of more expensively on an NVR or server. Cameras with dual SD slots which collectively offer up to 512GB storage capacity can provide security personnel with peace of mind in knowing that what may be crucial evidence will be stored safely at the Edge. At full frame rate, the images continually captured by 2-megapixel

high definition cameras, for example, will be stored for up to approximately 20 days before they are overwritten. The number of days of recording can be increased if a lower frame rate is acceptable and/or if a manufacturer has developed their own compression technology which complements H.265 and in doing so, minimise storage requirements and improve bandwidth efficiency. SD cards will also help keep data safe at the Edge in the event of network disruption. The deployment of cameras featuring Auto Recovery Backup (ARB) will ensure that activity recorded on an SD card if a connection is temporarily lost, will be automatically transmitted to a remote recording device when the connection is restored. The benefits, however, of the Edge go far beyond storing data onboard a camera. Edge-based Applications Video surveillance cameras are increasingly being regarded as smart IT devices which happen to be equipped with an imaging sensor and a lens. In this respect, we are close to a point in time when the superb quality of the images captured by multi-megapixel cameras will be taken for granted in the same way as we now regard being able to make calls on a mobile phone. When was the last time, for instance, you saw

an advert promoting a new mobile phone’s call functionality or quality? There is so much more you can do with cameras now that they have the capability to run on-board video analytic applications such as heat mapping, people counting and queue management, as well as pandemic related face mask detection, social distance measuring and occupancy monitoring solutions. With the processing power to do so, it makes sense to mine the captured information at the Edge and thus avoid transmitting large amounts of data over the network. Whilst manufacturers such as Hanwha Techwin are supplying cameras pre-loaded with these applications, as well as Intelligent Video Analytics (IVA) such as tampering, directional detection, defocus detection, virtual line, enter/ exit and motion detection, the Edge provides the perfect opportunity for specialist third-party software developers to innovate by way of developing ground-breaking, serverless solutions that meet the specific needs of individual vertical market sectors. Cost saving and scalable solutions As an example, there is a serverless ‘small site’ ANPR solution available which automatically controls the movement of whitelisted cars through barriers via camera relay

outputs, as well as provide valuable car park management information, such as ‘time spent’ and occupancy rates. It does so without users having to incur the cost of installing and running the application on a server, as up to 4 cameras (1 master camera and 3 slaves) are able to simultaneously capture and transmit video analytics data to a convenient user interface. Serverless edge-based solutions are scalable and thus provide users with the flexibility to incrementally expand their systems at any time, without having to procure an expensive server.

or sensors are being used to detect activity, because it has not been trained to look out for them. This higher level of performance of Deep Learning AI based video analytics means control room operators and security personnel can focus on responding to real incidents and emergencies and not waste time and effort on false alarms. In addition to extreme accuracy, deep learning also allows operators to search for specific features and attributes, including a person’s age group and gender, and whether they are wearing glasses, a hat, or carrying a bag.

Deep Learning AI video analytics These applications elevate video surveillance from just being a security system which helps monitor and detect suspicious activity, to a smart solution which delivers so much more. The recent introduction of affordable cameras supplied with Deep Learning AI video analytics onboard, has further enhanced the ability of cameras to be used as detection devices. Deep Learning AI video analytics ignores video noise, waving trees, moving clouds and animals, all of which might normally be the cause of false alarms when standard motion detection technology

Retail and traffic applications Cameras equipped with Deep Learning AI are particularly suitable for applications which require a greater degree of sophistication than that offered by traditional video analytics. It enables, for example, retailers to capture and analyse business intelligence such as age and gender, allowing them to granularly analyse customer demographics and in doing so, gain a greater understanding of customer behaviour and buying patterns. Road planners, traffic regulation enforcement authorities and police are also now able to take advantage of AI cameras to identify the make,

36 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

model and colour of vehicles, in addition to recognising car number plates. The shortly to be launched edge-based Wisenet Road AI intelligent traffic management solution will, as an example, utilise Deep Learning AI video analytics to identify over 700 vehicle models manufactured across 70 brands. The data can be used to conduct surveys to gain a greater understanding of road usage, as well as help accurately identify vehicles involved in traffic infringements. Summary System integrators will find the Edge provides them with the opportunity to offer their end-user clients innovative and sustainable systems, e.g. self-contained smart devices which could even perhaps be powered by solar panels. In doing so, they will be able to capitalise on the latest technology to deliver solutions which would not have been thought possible back in what we might now regard as primitive times, when low resolution, monochrome CCTV images had to be expensively transmitted and remotely monitored from a central location. Ajax protects schools and kindergartens in Mariupol

n Mariupol (Ukraine), 51,000 children attend schools and kindergartens. This is a huge infrastructure, more than a hundred buildings for children and staff. Until recently, they were protected by guards with no specialized training. Now, in the educational institutions of Mariupol, 167 Ajax security systems have been installed,

38 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

and the employees can control them via smartphones. 114 schools and kindergartens are protected from intrusion and flooding. And an armed police patrol arrives on the scene in case of an alarm. The purchase of the systems has become a profitable investment for the city. Learn how to implement such a project and recoup the costs in six months.

Why schools and kindergartens need smart security systems These are municipal institutions, and their protection costs the city UAH 38 million annually (US $1,4M). Guards could scare off an accidental bully, but to deal with a planned theft would have been a problem. What was needed was a professional system that meets precise security requirements.

What was considered when choosing a system Solving the problem has been a challenge for the city administration for five years. Professional security systems looked like a solution. However, a security system back then was seen as a complicated system of wiring difficult and expensive to implement. Price was an important issue: the new system cannot cost more than hiring the security. The system should not require construction work during installation (repairs would affect the project’s cost). Investing in uncertified technology would also be unwise. Finally, the system will be used by the staff of schools and kindergartens, so it should be straightforward in everyday life. For the tender, a clear request has been formulated. Security system should: • protect from intrusion, notify about flooding; • have a mobile app, so the employees can manage the system and receive notifications if something happens; • connect to the police monitoring station, so that an armed patrol

• • • • •

arrives on the scene in case of an alarm; be low maintenance, running on batteries for years. Why Ajax The system not only meets all the requirements but has three advantages: Ajax is recognized by international security experts. A solution for years. No need to spend the budget on the purchase of additional equipment. The firmware is updated over the air.

• Prompt service. Ajax is fully developed and produced in Ukraine, and the support service is available 24/7/365. How the installation was done 9,714 detectors and devices were installed in two months. It took a professional installer 2–3 hours to install about 100 devices at one establishment. Headmasters note that the process wasn’t even noticeable. For example, a school built in 1900 was equipped with the

IN SECURITY | October 2021 | 39

system with all possible caution measures. There was no need to destroy walls for wiring because the system uses radio connection. The work schedule of schools and kindergartens was not disrupted. MotionProtect Curtain is on the wall. Installation took place during classes and did not disrupt the educational process How the system works Each facility received a Hub 2 Plus central unit. Motion and opening detectors control all doors and windows, protecting against intrusion and burglary. Motion detector with a photo camera sends a series of images to help the user and the monitoring station operator assess the situation: it becomes apparent whether it is a burglary or just an employee forgot to disarm the system. A loud outdoor siren activates an alarm that can be heard throughout the neighborhood. MotionCam detector sends a photo in case of an alarm In addition to the intrusion protection, the rooms and basements have flood 40 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

protection. Flood detectors instantly notify users of a leakage. This helps avoid serious consequences for the premises and unnecessary costs for the city budget. LeaksProtect is in the place of a possible leak. If the pipe breaks through, the detector immediately reports an accident Some schools have thick walls and several floors. The system protects even remote rooms and premises due to the radio signal range extenders that boost the range of all Ajax security system devices. Who manages security With Ajax apps, principals and employees manage security modes, receive notifications with photo verification of alarms, control opening and closing of school/kindergarten in the morning and evening. In addition to the app, the principal can arm the school using the KeyPad touch keyboard The system also allows assigning access rights to individual security groups. This flexibility is imperative for cooks and lunchroom staff arriving very early in the morning,

as well as for the teachers of extracurricular classes that work after a school closing time. How alarms are monitored The systems installed in schools and kindergartens are connected to the Police monitoring station. This means that if something happens, a trained armed patrol quickly arrives at school or kindergarten. Ajax systems have an option to connect an in-app panic button service, so that a school employee or a kindergarten supervisor can call for help in case of emergency. Project results Smart security systems implementation project costed Mariupol City Council UAH 17 million (US $628,000). And the next year, the city will be able to save twice as much, which is UAH 38 million (US $1,4М). At the same time, the quality of security services increases. International Security Expo 2021

Senior security professionals from around the globe come together to mark the return of International Security Expo

F

rom 28 and 29 September, International Security Expo – the world’s premier Government, industry, academia and end-user security event – returned for the first time in nearly two years. Co-located with the newly-launched International Cyber Expo, the events welcomed thousands of security professionals from all corners of the industry, including senior representatives from Heathrow Airport, British Army, Bank of England, Tesco Stores Ltd, BAE Systems, Chester Zoo, CPNI, Dell, Neptune Energy, Post Office, NaCTSO, DASA and the Embassy of Argentina. Further to this, recently appointed Minister for Security and Borders Rt

Hon Damian Hinds MP, was also in attendance and carried out a keynote speech, clearly demonstrating the importance of the event to the security sector. Reconnecting the market from far and wide, the international audience was made up of attendees from 36 countries including Israel, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Belgium and Australia. This included senior delegates from NATO - HQ AIRCOM, Germany, Government of Gibraltar, US Army RCCTO, New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police and the Embassy of the State of Kuwait. The overwhelming feedback from visitors and exhibitors alike proved a

strong desire for the opportunity to reconnect, source new products and take advantage of in-person learning opportunities. Speaking about the appeal of the events, Harry Forsyth, Risk and Intelligence Analyst, Kings Secure Technologies said: “Both International Security Expo and International Cyber Expo are excellent events to reconnect with people in the industry, watch some great talks and broaden my horizons. The quality of the products exhibited was noticeable.” Fellow visitor, Rob Cochrane CSMP MBA, Security & Risk Consultant and Security Manager at Ferrero, also attended the show to get a better understanding of what is

currently on offer across the market. He said: “The show is great and has delivered everything I need. It’s very broad in terms of its sell - there is plenty of material from physical measures to cyber solutions.” A Government backed event The specialist Government Zone was a key part of the exhibition and demonstrated significant support from UK Government and associated agencies. It provided a central meeting point for visitors to network and discover the latest projects and plans for the future from exhibitors including Accelerated Capability Environment (ACE), Border Force, British Transport Police, The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Counter Terrorism Policing, Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA), The Joint Security and Resilience Centre (JSaRC), The National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO), The National Security Technology and Innovation Exchange (NSTIX), Police Crime Prevention Initiatives (PCPI), Research and Intelligence Support Centre (RISC), Security Industry Authority (SIA) and UK Defence & Security Exports (UK DSE). Demonstrating the increasingly sophisticated smuggling techniques used for international drug trafficking, Border Force carried out a live demonstration of a seized Ford Kuga that uses a sophisticated magnet system to open a concealment area within the rear of the vehicle. Elsewhere, British Transport Police provided attendees with the opportunity to witness an experienced dog handler and trained Explosive Search Dog demonstrate the capability and effectiveness of responding to these threats. Officers on the stand also highlighted a selection of equipment including firearms, less lethal devices, door entry apparatus and medical supplies used to actively deter, detect and disrupt terrorist and criminal activity across the railway network in London and other major cities. In addition to exhibiting, several high-profile Government officials took to the stage to present insightful sessions across the two days including Mark Goldsack, Director DIT, UKDSE; Angela Essel, Head of JSaRC - Joint Security

and Resilience Centre (JSaRC); Tracy Buckingham, Deputy Director Security and Cyber Security Exports – DIT UKDSE; Kevin Knappett, Cell Broadcast Delivery Lead Digital Infrastructure Directorate UK Government, DCMS UK GOV; and Shaun Hipgrave, Director Prepare, Protect, CBRNE & Science Directorate - Homeland Security Group, Home Office. Helping attendees understand the role of the government in advising and providing strategic support, Mark Goldsack, Director, UK Defence and Security Exports spoke about the market intelligence available for those businesses looking to do business abroad. He shared insights on the role of the UKDSE to promote and encourage trade, provide information and analysis on the business landscape in regions around the world, as well as provide access to a network of trade advisors to UK businesses. Following Mark’s session, Shaun Hipgrave, Director, Protect & Prepare, CBRNE and Science Directorate, HSG, Home Office took to the stage. He highlighted the key priorities and areas of responsibility for Homeland Security in the UK ranging from Borders and Aviation Security, CBRNE S&T, Protect & Prepare, as well as JSaRC, and stressed how the diverse make up of the security industry was critical to its success. On day two, there was a real buzz on the show floor as it was announced that Rt Hon Damian Hinds MP, recently appointed Minister for Security and Borders, would open the second day with an exclusive

keynote speech. During his address, he highlighted how events like International Security Expo and International Cyber Expo bring the security community together to inspire and be inspired, commenting, “in the security field you have to keep on innovating because the threat, what we’re up against, keeps on shapeshifting and changing.” He reflected on the industry’s resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic, its remarkable ability to innovate and the importance of a close working relationship to achieve a safer and more secure society. Speaking after his keynote session, Hinds added: “I think it’s really important for people to come together, to be able to learn from each other, to see what is happening and make connections and to work out how we can all work together to improve our safety and security.” Exclusive insights from the experts The event’s free-to-attend and CPD certified educational programme saw over 90 inspiring sessions and 120 speakers deliver insightful sessions across five theatres. The Global Counter Terror and Serious & Organised Crime Summit was packed out throughout the two-day event, with eager listeners regularly spilling out the door. One of the most popular sessions was delivered by Nick Bailey, retired Detective Sergeant involved in the Salisbury Novichok poisoning. Bailey took attendees on an emotional journey by talking through the events of 4 March 2018, and the impact it has had on his mental health, describing himself as “a different

person, broken physically and mentally. Discussing the uniqueness of it being a state-sponsored attack, he spoke to attendees about coming to terms with trauma, resilience and the damaging effect losing control of many aspects of everyday life has had. In another session, Philip Ingram MBE, Former Senior Intelligence & Security Officer and Editor in Chief; Figen Murray, Protect Duty Campaigner; and Aaron Edwards, Senior Lecturer at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, sat on a panel to discuss the blurred lines between terrorism and organised crime. Moderating the session, Roy McComb, Director of Inquisitio Consulting Ltd and Former Deputy Director of the National Crime Agency immediately opened the session for attendees to address questions to the panel, which ranged from: Are we spending too much money on terror and organised crime at the expense of other issues? Should we negotiate with terrorists? and How do we cut off the financial stream to terror and organised crime? Sponsored by Adani and Patriot One, at the International Security Conference, speakers from British Transport Police, City of London, Imperial War Museums, HVM Advisors and more provided attendees with insights across CNI, transport and aviation, with day two turning to the night-time economy, public sector and major events. In a 44 | October 2021 | IN SECURITY

session titled ‘The state of aviation security, Philip Baum of Green Light Limited and Coventry University reflected on the role of mental health as ‘a major challenge to the industry’. He spoke about the importance of behavioural analysis, describing this as “the first and foremost measure we ought to be implementing” to mitigate future threats, before reflecting on the new challenges brought about by the pandemic and introduction of social distancing in airport security screening. The inaugural Global Cyber Summit also welcomed major names in cyber security. Tracy Buckingham, Deputy Director of Security & Cyber Exports at UKTI DSE spoke about the UK’s role in cyber and security capabilities on the global stage and how collaboration between government, industry and academia - a trio she described as “the cornerstone of the UK’s approach to cyber security” - is vital to the strength of the UK’s cyber security industry. Elsewhere, Professor Ciaran Martin CB, Oxford University, Former CEO, National Cyber Security Centre delivered a session on the current cyber threats and priorities. Underpinning Martin’s speech was the belief that we have unconsciously polluted the cyber environment, resulting in the need for a rethink to make it a safer place to inhabit. During his session, he explored five key areas that required change: people, money, rules, technology, and

skills. A platform for product innovation and the latest launches With world-leading exhibitors together under one roof, visitors perused the stands of the likes of Adani, Marshalls Mono, Audax Global Solutions, Bastion Security Products, Leidos, Patriot One, Rapiscan Systems, HS Security Group, PointWire, Pitagone, Smiths Detection Group, Tripwire, Heras, Leonardo, APSTEC Systems, Jacobs, Astrophysics, Intqual and Mitie to source a wide range of security products and solutions. The show floor was recognised as a hotbed for innovation, with many exhibitors taking the opportunity to launch new products. For example, Apstec Systems showcased version 4 of its Human Security Radar (HSR V4) which combines a sleek design, smaller footprint and improved mobility with enhanced AI, additional detection capabilities and flexible integration. Meanwhile, Everbridge showcased its Global Critical Event Management (CEM) Certification™ Program with formalised standards for assessing an organisation’s enterprise resilience. As well as showcasing its range of protective street furniture options, Marshalls Landscape Protection used the event to launch its new seating range, Verso. The full range has been tested to IWA14-1 using a

1.5 tonne M1 vehicle and a 7.2 tonne N2A vehicle travelling at 30mph. It can be used to create a variety of configurations that blends seamlessly into all environments. Meanwhile, Lochrin Bain introduced its industry disrupting B3(SR2) rated fencing system, Lochrin Combi™ SL2. The fence offers the same attack delay times as other systems of the same level but no specialist tooling or training for installers and security professionals. Elsewhere, Bastion Security Products announced the launch of its new single and double steel doorsets which feature BastionCORE attack resistant materials to mitigate cut through and cylinder guard removal attacks. Rebecca Hughes, Country Marketing Manager (UK) at Heras said: “Heras was delighted to be a Premier Partner Exhibitor at the ISE and support an event where the UK security industry could come together, showcase the latest innovations in physical and cyber security and discuss key issues where effective security can be beneficial for UK plc. We are delighted that our new innovations were so well received at the show and generated strong interest. We expect this to translate into a strong order book.” Products under the spotlight Attendees also snapped up the opportunity to take a deep dive

into the latest new launches in the Product Innovation Theatre. Here, exhibitors including Exeon Analytics, Census Labs, Robin Radar, 3M Privacy Solutions, Heras, Safetyflex Barriers and Smiths Detection took to the stage to deliver a range of insightful sessions. For example, Christoforos Papachristou, Strategic Account Manager for Census Labs provided attendees with insights on how the Internet of Security Things – a network of sensors, wearables, and IoT devices that use cloud and edge computing – create a cohesive security force. On day two, Jeremy Tettmar, Sales Manager, Safetyflex Barriers revealed the next generation of crash rated street furniture from ultra-slim profile, shallow mount antiterrorist bollards to cost-effective, large perimeter Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) equipment. Live, interactive demonstrations Visitors were also able to witness these products and more in action across a number of live, interactive demonstrations and within specialist zones. The LPCB Live Testing Lab gave visitors the opportunity to witness a team of professional forced entry specialists attempt to break through physical security products including mesh fencing systems from the likes of ARX and Fastline, key safes from Burton Safes, glazing units from Selectaglaze, hinged gates from Lochrin Bain, turnstiles from Frontier Pitts and Eagle Automation,

and more. The place to network The event’s International Hosted Buyer Meeting Programme enabled senior buyers from around the globe to come together and do business, regardless of travel restrictions. In conjunction with the Department of International Trade’s UK Defence & Security Exports, the free-of-charge personalised matchmaking service gave qualified buyers an exclusive space away from the show floor to speak to hand-picked solution providers. The sessions ran both virtually and physically to meeting all needs. Rachael Shattock, Group Event Director at Nineteen Group added: “I can’t describe how fantastic it feels to reunite the whole security industry, face-to-face after over 18 months without a physical event, and provide a platform to network, learn and discover the latest security solutions from the world’s leading suppliers. This year is also particularly special as we successfully launched the first International Cyber Expo with its own dedicated Global Cyber Summit conference programme, interactive activities, and a raft of top suppliers.” International Security Expo and International Cyber Expo will return to Olympia London from 27 – 28 September 2022.
