Smart door locks: A new study identifies consumer demands for 2016 and beyond London, August 2016 – Hard data on the market for smart-home security is scarce, but a new report from lock industry leader ASSA ABLOY and IFSECGlobal.com aims to fills the gap. The new co-published report reveals answers to key questions about the growing market for smart locks. What do consumers think a digital door lock should do? How do they want to access their newly “smart” front door? And what do they really think about relying on digital rather than mechanical security for the most important door in their homes? The full report — titled “The Smart-Home Security Report 2016” — is available free to download from www.assaabloy.co.uk/ smartreport2016. It concludes that, increasingly, consumers understand that a smart home starts with a smart front door lock.
“In this survey we polled hundreds of would-be adopters of this rapidly maturing technology from all over Europe, the Middle East and Africa,” explains Adam Bannister, chief editor of IFSECGlobal.com. The result is a detailed assessment of the attributes consumers are coming to expect from a smart lock. The report covers multiple aspects of this growing market, beginning with a fundamental question: what should a digital door lock do? And how do consumers want to control the new smart lock on their front door? The report details the functionality that potential consumers believe a lock and its paired smartphone app should have, from remote opening to automated push notifications when anyone opens your lock.
“We already lead the way in providing digital access control to commercial companies with security-sensitive premises,” explains Thomas Schulz, Director Marketing & Communications ASSA ABLOY EMEA. “Regular homeowners, too, are being won over by the advantages that wireless digital door locks bring for smart-home security.” The report compares digital and mechanical security, examining potential adopter concerns and hopes for new smart-home technologies. Also it examines how much customers would be willing to pay for the increased functionality of a digital front door lock. Where do they want to buy such a lock? And what worries potential buyers about the installation and operation of a smart door lock? Thomas Schulz adds: “Potential adopters are sophisticated; they have strong opinions about what they want from these products. We are delighted to be able to share some of our growing knowledge base with others in the sector. Our Yale Keyfree and Keyless Connected products, as well as the ENTR™ digital lock, distributed worldwide under brands including Mul-T-Lock, Vachette, TESA, KESO, NEMEF and Yale, already make up the largest range of connected security locks for smart homes on the market.”

Intelligently connected building technology from Bosch
Integrated building management and security systems ensure smooth processes. Intelligently connected Bosch building security systems discreetly ensure smooth processes and minimize operating and personnel costs. Bosch is presenting its building management system known as BIS (building integration system), which combines all the security systems of a building on one platform: video surveillance, fire-alarm and evacuation systems, intrusion-alarm technology, and access control. Building technology used to open and close barriers, gates, and doors, for example, can also be controlled with BIS. In addition, Bosch is introducing the option of connecting the MAP 5000 (modular alarm platform) intrusion alarm system with the MATRIX access control system. The system ensures greater security and efficiency when it comes to security management. Bosch is also showcasing its new combined public address and voice evacuation system known as PAVIRO. PAVIRO facilitates the swift evacuation of a building, thereby reducing the risk of mass panic breaking out. The company’s EffiLink remote service system ensures fast, costeffective maintenance, remote diagnostics and parameterization, software updates, troubleshooting, and support from service technicians. Intelligent energy monitoring cuts costs and reduces CO2 emissions Intelligently connected Bosch heating, cooling, and ventilation systems provide an ideal indoor climate simply and automatically enabling up to 30-percent reductions in energy use, costs, and CO2emissions. With its Energy Platform, Bosch is presenting a monitoring and analysis tool for increasing energy efficiency in commercial buildings. Companies and
owners are provided with a comprehensive overview of energy consumers and costs in real time. Intelligent algorithms spot deviations from the target state, send alerts in case of malfunctions or if tolerances are exceeded, provide specific suggestions for solutions, and automatically implement those solutions in part. This creates the basis for further approaches to optimization and an efficient supply of energy in the long term. Intuitive smart-home solutions make life more convenient and secure Bosch’s solutions for smart homes make life more convenient and secure, and relieve users of tedious household chores. The Bosch Smart Home System connects devices in the home with the internet as well as with each other via a single system platform. Users are able to intuitively set up and operate the system, which is modular and expandable. It is also easy to connect compatible devices built by other manufacturers to it. All devices connected with the Bosch Smart Home System can be controlled and monitored from anywhere with an app for smartphones and tablets. Bosch is showcasing its current product portfolio, which includes the Bosch smart home controller, intelligent radiator thermostats, doorwindow contacts, a smart plug, and lighting solutions from partner Philips Hue. The smart home controller is the central control unit of the Bosch system. It connects the components with the internet and each other. With the help of the window contacts, for example, the system automatically turns down the heating if a window is opened, saving the user time and money

Meet the world’s most intelligent smart building: The Edge in Amsterdam
Twenty-eight thousand sensors. That is how many it takes to create the world’s smartest, most environmentally friendly building: The Edge. An office building in Amsterdam whose main tenant is consulting firm Deloitte, has been rated the most environmentally sustainable smart building in the world since its 2014 opening. “When the board asked me to construct this building, I made sure it has everything – like “internet of things,” sensors, sustainability and integrated those into a data analysis platform,” said Eric Ubels, former CIO of Deloitte. Deloitte is collecting gigabytes of data daily to see how the smart building interacts and adapts with the employees working inside. The consulting company uses its datafilled dashboards to track everything from energy usage to when food needs to be restocked. The Edge has unparalleled vision into the behavior of its inhabitants and an artificial intelligence-like ability to provide them whatever is needed when it is needed. For instance, The Edge uses a mobile app to track when an employee leaves their house to go to work
so when they arrive it can direct them into an open parking spot. It also sees when fewer employees are expected in certain areas of the building so sections can be shut down if deemed not in use, cutting lighting and heating costs. At every location the building will adjust lighting and temperature to an individual’s preference. For example, if someone is more sensitive to bright lighting, The Edge can dim the lights to a predetermined point the moment they enter a new location. The building’s 6,000 light emitting diode panels, made by Philips specifically for The Edge, operate using an Ethernet-powered lighting system. The panels themselves are filed with sensors – motion, light, temperature, humidity, infrared – to create a digital ceiling. The Philips LoE LED system was used in all office spaces to reduce the energy requirement by around 50% compared to conventional TL-5 lighting. But The Edge isn’t just a smart project, it is seen as a cultural revolution turning traditionally static work environments on their head. No one who works in the building has an office. The Edge application keeps
a schedule for employees, making sure they are in the right place at the right time – in meeting rooms, workstations (as close to a traditional desk as you will find, and all within 7 meters of a window), concentration rooms, etc. The smartphone is a main link between people and The Edge. Employees can use it to find colleagues, adjust climate controls or manage their gym routine. Those devices can be wirelessly charged on desks, which are all equipped with built-in QI wireless chargers. Other green practices and solutions in The Edge Solar panel roof and air ventilation 65,000 square feet of solar panels are located on the facades and roof. The energy from solar panels goes to an aquifer thermal energy storage system with two 130-meter deep bore holes in combination with heat pumps to generate all energy for heating and cooling the building. Excess air from the offices is used again to aircondition the atrium space. The air is then ventilated back out through the top of the atrium where it passes through a heat exchanger to make use of any warmth.

Rain water reuse Rain water is collected on the roof and used to flush toilets, and irrigate the green terraces in the atrium and other garden areas surrounding the building. Data The data generated by the building’s digital systems and the mobile app on everything from energy use to working patterns helps Deloitte understand the working environments as a whole. Discussions are currently ongoing regarding the future of this data and its use for research and knowledge transfer.
n The Edge is considered the greenest smart building in the world, according to the U.K.-based Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method, which gave it the highest sustainability score ever awarded at 98.4%. Overall, the building produces 102% of its own energy n 8 I November 2016 I smart automation
