ologne / Stuttgart, Germany – Preventing the theft of expensive medical equipment, stopping unauthorized persons from entering restricted areas, and informing the OR of a rescue helicopter’s arrival: with the help of intelligently connected cameras, video technology, and much more, things that used to be impossible at hospitals – or were only possible as stand-alone, non-digital solutions – are now child’s play thanks to Bosch’s internet of things (IoT) expertise. According to the insurance industry, the theft of endoscopic devices results in millions of euros in damages for hospital operators throughout Europe. Sensorbased video technology in corridors and at points of entry and exit can provide crucial evidence for prosecuting

criminals. Prevention is equally important. Intelligently controlled lighting, connected motion detectors on doors and windows, and intrusion alarm systems scare off burglars, prevent theft, and save operators the high cost of having to replace expensive medical equipment. “The internet of things has finally arrived at hospitals,” Dr. Stefan Hartung, the member of the board of management responsible for the Energy and Building Technology business sector at Bosch, said at a press conference. Safety and security are not the only benefits, he added: connected solutions also provide greater convenience and efficiency in hospitals. Bosch plans to generate sales of around 100 million euros with smart hospital projects in the years ahead. For the entire Energy and
Building Technology business sector, Bosch expects sales growth of around five percent this year, more than double the sector’s growth rate last year. Contributing to hospitals’ digitalization strategies According to a study by Roland Berger, almost 90 percent of all hospitals have developed a digitalization strategy to increase their efficiency and economic performance – and infrastructure is no exception. “We would like to benefit from these ambitions, which is why we will expand our business activities in the field of connected products and services for hospitals. Through our intelligent solutions, we want to make a contribution to greater quality of life, safety, and security at hospitals, as
“ well as to greater resource conservation, Hartung said. Bosch: a service provider for smart hospitals Hospitals are under tremendous pressure. They have to function smoothly 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Under constantly rising cost pressure, doctors and nurses have to care for patients, people and
valuable equipment also have to be protected, and technical infrastructure has to be managed optimally. With smart hospital solutions, Bosch relieves the burden on hospital operators and staff when it comes to technical and administrative duties. Patients also benefit from new, connected services in their hospital rooms, such as interactive infotainment systems.
Since December 2016, Bosch has been an energy partner for a 750-bed cancer treatment center in Bangalore, India, which handles around 390,000 patients a year Connected control center at University Hospital in Munich At the Rechts der Isar hospital in Munich, one of Germany’s largest medical centers, a connected control center ensures

an optimal overview of the hospital’s safety-relevant processes. From there, employees can monitor gates, intercoms, and the installed video cameras. Four multi-picture-display monitors make it possible to keep an eye on 34 clinics and departments. The system is also used to control safety-relevant access points. In addition, connected cameras and monitors register the landing of rescue helicopters, notify the OR directly of their arrival, and inform the relevant members of staff. To enable these new functions, Bosch has added internet capabilities to existing, non-digital surveillance cameras and networked them to create a single system, saving the cost of having to buy more than 70 cameras, cutting the facility’s operating costs, and reducing the burden on employees. Climatec: a long-standing partner in the U.S. In North America, the Bosch subsidiary Climatec is a long-standing partner of Banner Health. With 29 facilities in seven states, Banner Health is one of the largest non-profit healthcare providers in the U.S. Bosch plans, develops, and integrates solutions in new and retrofitted hospitals

for this customer. At 15 Banner facilities, Bosch provides building automation, air conditioning, and fire detection equipment, as well as nurse-call and infotainment systems for patients – integrated, connected, and from a single source. The goal is to use connected solutions to create comfortable environments for providing medical care to patients that are also economical and reliable. NH hospital in Bangalore benefits from lower energy costs Since December 2016, Bosch has been an energy partner for a 750-bed cancer treatment center in Bangalore, India, which handles around 390,000 patients a year. The facility is part of the Narayana Hrudayalaya (NH) chain. With 30 hospitals at 18 locations, NH is one of the largest healthcare providers in India. At the heart of the project is a sensor- and softwarebased energy solution that will ensure a high degree of energy efficiency in the long term while guaranteeing outstanding convenience and comfort for patients and staff. Bosch is also supporting facility management in its day-to-day work with an innovative energy management and
monitoring system, allowing the facility to cut costs by around twelve percent compared to its previous expenses. Staff members can use their smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers to access energy data at any time and react immediately to irregularities. Indoor positioning can save lives Together with other partners, Bosch is dedicated to developing additional IoTbased services for the hospital sector. In emergencies, smart indoor solutions can make it possible to locate urgently needed medical equipment, for example, and transport it to certain areas of a hospital. Indoor positioning works by equipping essential medical equipment or other objects with sensors. Using sensor technology, they transmit their position or condition (such as their battery status) in real time via an internal network or a cloud to doctors and nursing staff. Such solutions speed up processes at hospitals and can even save lives – because in an emergency, every second counts. n For more information please visit www.boschbuildingsolutions.com

Laundry folding robots and recipe suggesting fridges among most desired smart home technology • A smart thermostat which automatically adjusts based on an individual’s body temperature (46%), is the smart technology device Brits would most like to own in their home • Contrastingly, a smart kettle that can be controlled by a phone (30%), is the smart tech product Brits are least open to purchasing and using • Equally, just 30% would consider fitting smart shelves that can automatically and conveniently re-order items as soon as they run out • 32% of property owners are drawn to the appeal of a laundry folding robot • Interestingly, 35% are keen to try an interactive shopping experience - whereby they can buy the clothing people are wearing on TV through an app in real time In a world where people are busier than ever before, convenience and speed have become very desirable commodities. Luckily, the emergence of various technology has enabled individuals to spend less time on mundane everyday tasks within the workplace as well as their own home. Some of the biggest technological developments have come from Wi-Fi enabled devices (e.g. smart speakers, smart thermostat etc.) that can function and be controlled in conjunction with one another to create a ‘connected’ working or living environment. Such devices have captured the imagination and wallets of consumers. So much so, that 40% of Brits now think smart home technology has improved their standard of living, according to statistics from ‘Thomas Sanderson’. Interested in emerging technological trends, RecycleZone. org.uk analysed the latest findings from ‘Mindshare’, who surveyed more than 6,000 Brits to identify the new type of smart technology they would most like to own in their home. RecycleZone.org.uk found that a smart thermostat which automatically adjusts based on an individual’s body temperature (46%), is the smart technology Brits would most like to have in their home. Thereafter, a smart vacuum cleaner that can also move items/ clutter off the floor (40%), is the next highly desired smart device that homeowners will happily purchase and use. Interestingly, 37% of Brits are attracted by the concept of a smart fridge that suggests recipes based on what food is in there. 34% want kitchen appliances that can connect and be remotely controlled by smart speakers and/or voice assistants. Surprisingly, 32% are drawn to the appeal of a laundry folding robot. On the other end, a smart kettle which can be operated by a phone (30%), is the smart tech product individuals would feel least inclined to acquire for their property. Equally, just 30% are tempted by the idea of fitting smart shelves that can automatically re-order items as soon as they run out – though as people gain a better understanding of their functionality, smart shelves popularity will surely rise over the next few years. Furthermore, Recycle Zone (from the report) also sought to determine how open the British public would be to harnessing technology in different life situations. From this, it was discovered that Brits would be most open

to watching a theatre production or concert livestreamed to their local cinema (43%). Similarly, 37% want to experience a concert or event from the comfort of their sofa via a virtual reality (VR) headset. Additionally, 35% are keen to try an interactive shopping method - whereby they can buy the clothing people are wearing on TV through an app in real time. Contrastingly, only 27% would plan to virtually meet up with their friends to play games using a VR headset. Slightly above, 29% have a preference to live video chat with a sales person as opposed to physically going to talk to them – this way also avoiding the issues typical associated with in-store shopping, such as long queues and lack of parking. n Editorial sponsored by www.recyclezone.org.uk

Schneider Electric’s IIoT innovations transform its Cavite Plant into Philippines’ first Smart Factory Smart Factory showcases EcoStruxureTM for Industry achieving overall productivity and efficiency to benefit partners and customers in the Philippines ●
Schneider Electric shares value of Smart Factory transformation as it brings to PH operations 14% in production growth and over 13% in energy savings annually
●
Cavite, Philippines – March 15, 2019 - Schneider Electric, the leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, launched its first Smart Factory in the Philippines on March 15, 2019 at PEZA Rosario, Cavite. With rapid growth of technology and digitization, industries must understand the value of building or transitioning into a Smart Factory. Schneider Electric believes that digital transformation throughout the industrial value chain is critical to consistently become globally competitive. As such, Smart Factories enable: ● Mass personalization. To meet the challenges from production efficiency, profitability, and more detailed needs of businesses, traditional factories are facing challenges of producing more personalized goods to answer more versatile demands from different markets. ● Increased quality. Digitization leads to a new approach in business models. With businesses now having access to new technologies, industries need to offer higher quality services in association to those technologies. ● Reduced energy costs. It is predicted that electricity demand will grow by 200% in 2040. Energy has become an increasing part of the total costs of running a factory, and reducing its environmental footprint is also a growing concern. Digitization can provide an answer to both. ● Operational excellence. As factories continue to face random failures that hinder continued production, digital tool and solutions are needed to streamline processes, identify faults and risks, and ensure business continuity. ● Change of mindset. Upskilling the workforce to do higher value jobs and digital transformation is the key to helping them upskill and learn how to operate new technologies. Through the Smart Factory Program, Schneider Electric leveraged its own EcoStruxureTM architecture as it implemented the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) across its global supply chain, and digitally transforming facilities to thrive in today’s digital economy. In 2017, Schneider Electric started transforming its Cavite Plant into a Smart Factory. By integrating EcoStruxureTM for Industry, local processes are continuously optimized while energy and production costs are minimized. This innovation also improves the lifespan, usage and maintenance of the different equipment used across its sites, allowing Schneider Electric to deliver end-to-end operational efficiency with more dynamic control for better business results. Michael Crozat, Vice President for Philippine Operations, Schneider Electric said: “We decided to transform our Cavite Plant into a Smart Factory in 2017 because we wanted to serve our partners and

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Where the smart money is Casey Wells, Digital Customer Marketing Manager of Trend Controls Limited, explains the benefits of connecting building services to create truly intelligent buildings, and what to consider when doing so.
W
e live in an increasingly connected world and the term ‘intelligent building’ has become part of the common vernacular. The Intelligent Building Dictionary defines it as ‘a building that integrates technology and process to create a facility that is safer, more comfortable and productive for its occupants, and more operationally efficient for its owners. Advanced technologies – combined with improved processes for design, construction and operations – provide a superior indoor environment that improves occupant comfort and productivity while reducing energy consumption and operations staffing’. All for one Traditionally, every building service had its own isolated infrastructure and used disparate systems, standards and protocols. This resulted in duplication of effort and materials, the coordination of multiple
20

SMART AUTOMATION
cabling infrastructure installations and a cost overhead to the project budget. It also produced a legacy of multiple underlying communications technologies, and increased complexity and cost in terms of facilities management. Times have changed and it is now possible to connect previously disparate building services such as security; digital signage; fire detection; heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC); lighting and Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) over a cloud based infrastructure. This creates a more ‘joined up’ approach to occupancy comfort – for example, while heating and ventilation play their parts in ensuring good air quality, they can also be connected to a lighting control system that simulates the natural daylight cycle and makes a building fully in tune with the circadian rhythms of occupants. This can help improve productivity and reduce instances of eyestrain, migraines and headaches.
Need to know As connected devices multiply, so too will opportunities for Apps to interact with the workspace in a multitude of productivity enhancing ways. Imagine being able to ‘friend’ or ‘like’ a building that learns your personal space and occupant preferences, and creates that environment before you set foot inside. The data that intelligent buildings provide, added to the analytics necessary to turn it into meaningful information, are crucial tools for building owners and managers, as they are pushed harder than ever to reduce cost and maximise the productivity of both people and assets. It is important to remember that creating a truly effective intelligent building relies upon knowing what interested parties are looking to achieve – some will prioritise comfort conditions and a more flexible workspace over energy efficiency and reducing water consumption, and vice versa. Whatever their objectives, there
will be a requirement for data that can be used to learn the ‘rules’ that apply to a building and configure the optimal way of operating it. The danger here is that although there is the potential to acquire lots of data, collecting it merely for the sake of it is a pointless exercise – ultimately, it’s what you do with it that counts. Organisations need to hone in on high-value, ‘target-rich’ data that is easy to access, available in real time, has a large footprint and can effect meaningful change if it is given the appropriate analysis and follow-up action. If, for instance, data is used to configure ways to reduce energy use, a good starting point is to use a BEMS to monitor energy consumption by sensors, metering and sub-metering. Then analytical software can be utilised
to collate, decipher and present the information in an easy to understand format, such as a dashboard or graphical user interface. Action plan One of the real benefits of this is that it allows building owners and managers to be proactive rather than reactive in terms of how they respond to actionable insights. As the missing link for companies that want to drive business outcomes from their data, actionable insights can be derived from a BEMS to prevent downtime and stop problems before they start, such as running plant more optimally to lower wear and tear, which, in turn, saves money by prolonging its life. Mechanical equipment will occasionally cease to perform correctly.
A BEMS can monitor plant efficiency in real time and send an alert if something is wrong. In terms of remedial action, this granular information means that the right engineer, with the right tools and spare parts, can be deployed to fix the issue. Not only does this save time and effort, it stops the production of CO2 from unnecessary journeys and reduces reliance on planned preventive maintenance (PPM), which involves replacing certain components on a timebased schedule, rather than doing so when they are actually worn or working inefficiently. Any savings can then be used to finance further investment in building optimisation, which, in turn, leads to further savings and creates a ‘virtuous circle’ – generating savings in g overall resource use, comfort, wellbeing

and helping to meet corporate social responsibility (CSR) objectives. Safe and secure Every building is unique and there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to configuring an intelligent infrastructure. Likewise, there are a number of pitfalls to avoid. Hackers are usually looking for confidential data that can be used for a variety of purposes, including identity theft and industrial sabotage. The complexity and sophistication of attacks, initiated by increasingly capable and technically well-equipped cyber criminals, is continuing to rise. Therefore, organisations should adopt a strict username, password and PIN policy across their infrastructure/ buildings and it is wise to regularly change passwords and make them as strong as possible. Similarly, all relevant equipment should have the latest software and firmware versions applied and all PCs that are connected over the network should run virus

protection software with up-to-date virus definitions as a matter of course. Intelligent building development also requires some long-term thinking. Although the initial purchase price of some technology might be attractive, it pays to check whether it is future proof, is modular and can be expanded as needs dictate, and whether the manufacturer has a policy of backwards compatibility when it comes to the design of new products. On a related issue, beware of systems that are closed protocol and lock the end user into using a particular manufacturer or integrator. Finally, although there is a lot of analytical software available, it is ineffective without an in-depth understanding of how a building works, how it is occupied, the activities that take place within it and how the building services systems operate together. Similarly, there must be clear set of objectives, so partner with a manufacturer and its Partners that can
provide solutions and work closely with them through a collaborative design approach. This means that any key performance indicators (KPIs) can be configured and measured, while dashboards provide all the right information in a way that they can be understood and adapted when required. Next step Having truly connected building services delivers tangible commercial and operational benefits to the owner and manager, provides occupants with a more effective working environment, and offers the potential to develop the facility into a truly intelligent facility. In order to take full advantage, system design must be flexible and agile, ready to respond to new applications and changing needs, and make the best use of the data produced. n For more information please visit www.trendcontrols.com

Breaking barriers Breaking down the barriers to reap the benefits from smart buildings
S
ince 2015, analysts have been talking about the Internet of Things delivering new types of ‘smart buildings’ that are able to provide a better experience for tenants and a more efficient, highly monetizable set of building management services to facilities managers. The picture now emerging is one of digital transformation at building level and the benefits of this approach are translating into a huge market opportunity, estimated at $31.74 billion by 2022, to deploy, and make useful, smart technology in buildings. Thanks to the availability of lower

cost IoT devices that in their millions can harvest data at scale; integration of local area and wide area wireless communication networks to relay sensor data, enhanced data processing via cloud-based data analytics, and mechanisms to enable action from insight, the design of commercial, industrial, buildings and their operations blueprint has now changed. So what are the opportunities that smart building technology can offer and how can the barriers to adoption be overcome to ensure the growth of the IoT market continues at its predicted rate? One of the most significant barriers
to adoption within the smart building market is cultural. The UK is one of the most CCTV intensive nations in the world and in recent challenging times, we have become used to the fact that our movements are constantly being observed. However, when the subject of big brother is raised, the majority are of the opinion that 24/7 monitoring makes people very nervous, especially when it comes to the issue of data protection. In order to realise the true benefits that intelligent building technology can provide, a wide range of data measurements need to be taken and this could cause concern

for those who are apprehensive about having their personal data recorded. For an environmental monitoring solution, for example, information such as energy usage, humidity, carbon monoxide and acoustics needs to be monitored. But what happens to that data, and who owns it? Many do not understand how smart technology can have a positive impact on elements such as energy usage, not just in terms of lowering bills but in turn reducing the impact on the environment and many more subsequent benefits. Without this insight, the automatic response to new
technology can be nervousness and skepticism. Education is therefore key to overcoming these cultural concerns and by encouraging collaboration between all parties at an early stage of the plans, the benefits can be clearly explained. The potential cost of an IoT implementation can also be a perceived barrier, but in the majority of cases the cost benefit analysis can present significant financial savings. For example, IoT technology can help to lower the maintenance quotient of a building by
monitoring key parameters such as water usage, temperature and movement of people. With this approach, maintenance can be performed swiftly when it is required, rather than waiting until a system breaks down. IoT technology can also aid in energy reduction, by helping to identify the causes of energy spikes and in turn resulting in an overall decrease in energy bills. By interfacing IoT-enabled devices to a building management system, key data parameters can be used to anticipate needs, take the requisite g action and control the entire process from

Whilst this involves monitoring a level of personal information, with data protection legislation in place individuals cannot be identified but can still play their part in the smart building measurement model. There are many new developments that may stir the market of Intelligent Buildings, including wafer-thin sensors that can be placed unobtrusively in challenging areas, robotic assistants that are able to ‘walk’ with you around a facility, tiny drone surveillance of perimeter security, and many, many more. These new developments seem to be focused on a single main objective: improvement of operational processes with the attendant commercial impact and increase in user satisfaction. A good example of this is in the Nordics where office facilities are dynamic, flexing shared desk space and working facilities for tenants and guests based on actual demand on any given day. Outside of the Nordics, this style of working is becoming a global trend, with

smart offices changing the future design of the office environment. A revolution that is being led by American office giant, ‘WeWork’, provides increased transparency within the working environment, as when combined with smart technology, these smart offices have been transformed into an intelligent ecosystem. From temperature sensors that can control the climate and make sure empty spaces aren’t being heated, to window shades that move with the sun, and water gauges that can detect leaks, IoT technology delivers endless benefits and efficiencies for the workspace and the users within. This shared intelligence, which has been designed specifically for flexibility, means that people and spaces are becoming more agile and interconnected than ever before. The reality is that with technology employees are now able to work from anywhere, and individuals are therefore demanding workspaces that are dynamic entities that extend from the office to the home and to third party environments. However, the current challenge for building owners and
developers is the upfront retrofitting costs of these environments. Education is key to increasing awareness of the many cost benefits smart buildings provide from energy conservation to facility security and an enhanced environment for the user – all of which can quickly contribute to a rapid return on investment. In the near future, we expect this flexibility to go even further, with an increase of highly customisable buildings that will provide individualisation and personalisation of the environment for the individual user, bringing together multiple ergonomic parameters that can be customised at will. For example; technology that matches the seating settings in your car to your desk chair, individual temperature zones by desk, digital image overlays around the user and adaptive lighting to positively impact mood will all work together to provide a more productive, pleasing and personalised environment for each user. n For more information please visit www. comms365.com

Do’s and don’ts for creating a ‘Smart Home’
vory Egg, specialists in KNX intelligent building technology and complementary solutions, give you the 411 on how to create your very own ‘Smart Home’. Did you know there are a few different levels of ‘Smart home’? For example, the term smart can be anything from a thermostat that you control remotely, to a fully connected home that is completely wired and designed to offer a heightened level of comfort and efficiency. Navigating the world of ‘Smart Technology’ can be overwhelming, especially if you’re a technophobe but don’t worry, it’s not that difficult to bring your home in to the 21st century so it starts working for you,

instead of against you! Helping you to embark on your very own ‘Smart Home’ journey, Ivory Egg outline the dos and don’ts of smart home design and creation - regardless of the type of system you’re looking for: Do consider what you are expecting the system to be able to do. If music is your thing, then a simple solution that enables multiple rooms to be playing the same music is probably the perfect solution for you. This can be achieved with a selection of network connected speakers, however if the sound quality of your music is what interests you then Ivory Egg recommend a higher end, single room solution. Whether it is
functionality or performance, there is a host of smart audio systems that will deliver on what is important to you. Don’t forget the network. Most routers supplied by internet providers will struggle to provide a consistent performance: especially when you have more than 20 devices connected. That may sound like a lot, but this can very quickly be achieved in a home where smart technology is installed. Wireless coverage can also be an issue if you have the luxury of a large property. Remember, relying on your mobile phone connection is fine when streaming content via YouTube, but to control and interface to products will require a home network: a

group of devices – such as computers, game systems, printers, and mobile devices – that connect to the Internet and each other. There are various off-the-shelf solutions you can choose that will extend the Wi-Fi capabilities throughout your home, but again, the router will still become an inevitable point of weakness. Ivory Egg therefore recommend you enlist the expertise of a professional home tech installer, as they can advise you on the best approach. By doing so, you will ensure connectivity throughout the home that is able to cope with a typical family with high usage, along with the ability to include critical systems like lighting and heating, so you can watch your latest boxset whilst maintaining full illumination. Don’t confuse smart devices with smart systems. If you are looking to build a new home, or improving an existing one, installing a wired infrastructure will provide far greater
If music is your thing, then a simple solution that enables multiple rooms to be playing the same music is probably the perfect solution for you. This can be achieved with a selection of network connected speakers long term flexibility and breadth of possibilities. Adding smart devices over the top of existing wiring is a great solution when you can’t rewire, but it can limit what you can achieve: particularly at a house wide level. That being said, if you engage a professional smart home installer
they will be able to help you get the most from whichever system is being installed. Don’t give up using a product after only a few times. Most smart home devices, particularly those based around voice interfaces, g improve the more you use them

and the more systems that you have connected. Checking the weather is certainly useful, but being able to dim the lights, shut the blinds and play your favourite album with one simple command is far more helpful. A lot of systems now have a degree of computer learning so the technology becomes tuned to your lifestyle and habits, the more you use them, the better they get. Don’t get caught up with scaremongering around security and data protection. The majority of systems from well-known brands are inherently secure, and the manufacturers do everything possible to protect you and your data. Voice devices may always be listening, but they are not always recording. This feature only comes in to effect when

a key word is said, at this point the voice application will make a secure connection to the cloud and process your command. That being said, Do change the default passwords. Security is a twoway street, so make sure to do your part by using strong passwords on devices and changing them regularly. Also, make sure you don’t alter the settings in your router that opens your home to the outside world, if you are not sure, please seek expert advice. Do consider smart home technology as an investment. When approached the right way, technology can be used to not only make your life easier, but also make your home more comfortable, secure, efficient and healthier. This leads to a better and more enjoyable home which is the
type of investment that over time, will really pay dividends for you, your lifestyle and your entire family. There are countless places you can get more information on smart homes, so once you have done your research and have a good idea of what you can’t live without, then find a professional like Ivory Egg who will be able to ensure you get the best possible performance, regardless of the system you choose. BUILDING AUTOMATION
Sensory overload
The self-powered Internet of Things – wireless sensors are the key to networked buildings
T
he average time between building and tearing down a building is around 100 years, which is the typical lifespan of a building. Of course, to keep earning a profit – especially in the case of commercial buildings – money must be regularly invested in maintenance and modernisation. Thanks to digitalisation, facility management companies are currently facing a radical technological transformation. Tenants in offices and other commercial buildings now often expect completely new services and flexibility. While classic technical building automation systems with automated control of blinds and temperature remain important, modern work environments demand more. And this is where the opportunity for new business models can be found. The goal is to link building automation systems with the Internet of Things (IoT) and thereby collect data that permits completely different services. New facility management roles already reflect this very development. Corporate real estate management (CREM), for example, deals with in-house real estate resources and how they can contribute to company profits. The point is no longer simply to manage the property but to actively establish a separate business field. IoT can make a valuable contribution to achieving this goal. Upgrading to the IoT – but how is this done? The technology needed to upgrade existing buildings and plan new ones with a view to the future already exists today. Wireless sensors that communicate with gateways over radio links form the basis for building digitalisation. They collect the raw
32

data and deliver it to IoT platforms for storage, processing and evaluation. The major suppliers of cloud-based platforms include IBM Watson, Microsoft Azure, Amazon Cloud, Google Cloud and Apple iCloud®. Suitable applications and dashboards
give facility managers a real-time, 360-degree view of their building and its use as well as its history. The wireless sensors from EnOcean can be flexibly placed all over the building, on furniture or objects such as printers, coffee makers, etc. Because they
Armin Anders, Vice President Business Development
are self-powered, they also require no maintenance. Thanks to this combination, the self-powered solutions are ideal for upgrading existing buildings, which make up the lion’s share of the market. Flexibility and the ability to add a radio-based system are important considerations for new buildings. But what exactly can building operators do with this knowledge?
A practical checklist of application examples The following application areas have emerged, in which the IoT contributes added value to building management: - Space and room utilisation - Restroom management - Predictive maintenance
- Energy optimisation - Asset management These areas are unified by the business goal of maximising building utilisation while minimising costs, especially in expensive metropolitan areas. The use of rooms and equipment according to new work environment concepts is a good example of this.

New ways of working Modernising office work environments has long been driven primarily by IT. However, designing these spaces requires collaboration across the board. Not only the HR department but also facility managers are therefore increasingly involved in implementing new work environments. Such concepts focus on flexible and attractive workplace design and the productivity improvements associated with this. The success of these projects depends on how well they are accepted by employees. Easy-to-install wireless sensors supply the appropriate data to enable the measurement and optimisation of the use and profile of workspace and devices. Wireless sensors form the basis for room use Motion sensors (passive infrared or vibration) detect the necessary raw data. Cameras for the alternative counting of people are associated with a great many disadvantages, such as data privacy concerns and the high cost of installing the necessary power cables. The benefits of a radio-based sensor solution for counting people, such as the one offered by EnOcean partner Thing-it, are obvious: Wireless sensors operate
34
Winter 2019
SMART AUTOMATION
without cables and are thus extremely economical to install. In particular, the EnOcean sensors use energy harvesting technology, which means that they operate without batteries and obtain their energy from the ambient light. As a result, they require no maintenance. Systematic readjustments Thing-it has developed an algorithm that determines how many people are present as well as their locations based on the use and activity profiles of the EnOcean sensor. The algorithm calculates the room capacity utilisation on this basis. Locations that are not well utilised, such as an out-of-the-way conference room, can be upgraded, adjusted in size, or a completely new use for the room may be considered. Or it might also make sense to introduce a hot desking concept. If it turns out that many desks remain unoccupied a great deal of the time, a sensor-based management system can help improve the room’s use. Wireless asset management Radio-based solutions with vibration sensors offer high added value with little effort in the area of asset management. The collected data can be used to check the utilisation of many pieces of equipment, such as printers and projectors. As a result, the printer can be placed in another, more
accessible location. A projector that has hitherto not been used is moved to a different conference room. Paradigm shift in building automation Future building use concepts require vast quantities of sensor data in order to continuously analyse and optimise use and operation. This data forms the basis for new service models that complement the existing building automation paradigms with lasting effect. Considering the many subsystems, international standards and market requirements, in particular, interoperable sensor concepts as well as modular overall IoT systems are urgently needed. The EnOcean ecosystem of more than 400 globally active companies in the building sector, which have come together to form the EnOcean Alliance, is particularly well positioned here. Interfaces, among other things, are defined within the Alliance. For companies, the interoperability gained means that future-oriented investments can be made in IoT projects, since the systems and solutions can be added to at any time and networked with products from different manufacturers. n For more information visit www.enocean.com

EcoStruxure is the bridge that connects the various hotel systems and makes it possible to achieve these different goals.” Certified by Schneider Electric in building €35K management systems (BMS), as well as in light and room control solutions, Easycontrol is an EcoXpert partner with full access to Schneider Electric’s offer portfolio and experts. flexibility of the EcoStruxure Building solution, Easycontrol was able to provide a single interface for all hotel operations. Best of all, the guests can control their rooms through their own smart phones or tablets. Putting it all together Fernando Ferreira, EcoXpert Marketing Manager for Schneider Electric, said “the
innovation of the EcoStruxure Building solution is the way it seamlessly integrates with hotel management systems, especially the guest room management system (Fidelio) and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). It’s truly a seamless system.” Evolution Hotel’s building systems are now fully operational and consist of software and hardware, enabling management of:
• EcoStruxure Building Operation* software, enabling management of guest room management systems such as air conditioning units, room settings, energy management and alarm management through a single solution • Full integration with the guest room management system (Fidelio) and IPTV • Guest control via smart devices or the room TV As a result, hotel managers are

now able to easily monitor and control building and guest rooms from the front desk or remotely. A superior customer experience When you step into a guest room at Evolution Hotel, you quickly discover it’s no ordinary room. By downloading an app, hotel guests can use their personal smart devices to control room settings such as lighting, curtains, and temperature. It is a seamless experience for the guest, made possible by the close integration with the IPTV system. “The hotel wanted to create an innovative experience for its guests, and Schneider Electric enables us to make that possible,” said João Carlos Gomes, Sana Technical Director.. Better control for the managers Behind the scenes, the hotel staff benefits just as much from the integrated technology as guests do. All operations can be easily monitored and controlled through one application, at the front desk or remotely from any location. Users can access live reports and set controls as needed, based on occupancy. For example, rooms or entire areas can be moved to setback to save energy. “We are able, in real time and anywhere in the world, to be connected online and understand, floor by floor, the occupancy rate, the average temperature of the floor, how many rooms are booked that day, how many are still to arrive, if the guest is in the room or not,” said Gomes. “This enables us to achieve cost-effectiveness and energy

efficiency in the hotel, making it more ecofriendly.” Positive results for hotel and guests According to Gomes, the hotel’s energy costs are 40% less than estimated. The savings are closely related to the installed air conditioning system that allows the use of free-cooling and free-heating, as well as the control system that enables the manager to partially disconnect areas of the hotel that are not occupied. Yet despite all the technology, Gomes said the total investment in the hotel falls within the average of the Sana Hotels Group. For Evolution Hotel, the goal of creating an innovative, interactive guest experience has been accomplished. “This integration EcoStruxureTM Architecturewas only possible because of Schneider Electric’s smart building IoT platform and our decision to choose an EcoXpert to handle the installation,” said Gomes. As for the future, Gomes said, “We want to implement this in more cities around the world. That is our goal. We will rely on solutions from Schneider Electric and the integration expertise of its EcoXpert network to achieve it.” IoT-enabled system architecture and platform that drives operational and energy efficiency EcoStruxureTM by Schneider Electric is our open, interoperable, IoT-enabled system architecture and platform.
