01 Academic: Urban Rebirth
The Reflection of the Gentrification in Parkdale Community Half Collaboration with Tian Yu, Meena Chowdhury, and Marina Ibrahim Winter 2019 (Group) + Summer 2019 (Individual) Course Code: ARC465 Guided Distractions: Abstraction & Experimentation in Architecture | 12 weeks + 8 weeks Instructor: Reza Nik
BACKGROUND Parkdale is a neighbourhood located in the west of downtown Toronto. It is bounded on the west by Roncesvalles Avenue, on the north by the CP Rail where it crosses Bloor Street, on the east by Dufferin Street from Queen Street South, and on the south by Lake Ontario. According to the data from Statistics Canada, over a third of residents live in poverty and nearly 90% are renters in the area of South Parkdale. It once was one of the last affordable neighbourhood in the downtown area, but now the circumstance has changed swiftly along the time. There was an increasingly rose issue in Parkdale, which was a wealth gap between North and South.
The geographical site is located in the south-west corner of King and Dufferin in South Parkdale. This is a controversial site because of its location and the current re-development condo proposal designed by Core Architects and developed by Lifetime Developments called XO Condos. The increasing numbers of newly built condos and the decreasing numbers of rental housings cause the residents’ strong indignation and protest. With the rise in gentrification and real estate speculation, many tenants are facing above guideline rent increases, evictions, and displacement.

The group project was a visual expression of the Gentrification issue and sarcasm of XO condo’s advertisement. XO condos’ advertising was about give love to the city and solve the housing shortage issue, but the consequences of expelling the locals are completely contrary to their advertising of “love“. We took the shape of the existing building on the site as reference to show these five steps visually and abstractly by using different materials of each model in our own understandings.

INDIVIDUAL FURTHER EXPLORATION
MODULE CATALOGUE
Architecture is a tool to alleviate social issues. By adding in different typed public-spaced modules that interspersed with the original buildings into the city to energize the community. Integrating architecture design with the city and residents in new different ways. The shape and form of the design are considered to be attractive for gathering people to the space and providing more places for residents to interact with each other. My design for the modules takes into account activities of different forms and scales, such as hold parties, small public libraries, public markets, temporary shelter for the home-less, and temporary activity areas.

02 Group: Life|Lake|Nature|Cell Microorganism Museum
Collaboration with Ningyu Zhang Fall 2019 8 weeks Supervisor: Jiayun Xu
BACKGROUND The site is located on the west side of downtown Toronto, where it is commissioned to build a museum of micro-organisms. Situated on the edge of a woods by Ontario lake, the views into both are essential.
The design challenge was to create a space with limited sunlight for breeding micro-organisms, while setting up precise views so as not to waste the beautiful landscape of the site.

SPATIAL CONCEPT Long Span To Solve
Shear Walls As Enclosure First, construct a load-bearing system composed of shear walls of the 1st floor.
Relying only on the outer walls, the spans across the middle will be too long and the inner space will be too loose.
Structural Section
Atriums As Light well & Circulation
2nd Floor Shear Walls
To fix the span request, additional shear wall wells are implemented, while serving as vertical circulation as well as introducing sunlight into the exhibition space.
The following second floor shear walls are added to the system, they work together with the 1st floor shear walls and the shear wall wells as a unitary structural system.
As seen in the section, the second floor shear walls are located around the middle of the first floor shear wall spans, creating a honeycomb shaped section, solving the structural request as well as creating attractive space.

03 Academic: A House for Two Inhabitants Precedent House Study Half Collaboration with Jeremy Chow, Alice Milne, Daniella Whitelaw Fall 2018 Course Code: ARC361Architecture Studio III| 12 weeks Instructor: Chloe Town
BACKGROUND In this project, students were assigned to a precedent house or villa and expected to study the design and drawing methods from that architect. I was assigned a modernist villa E1027 that designed by Eilleen Gray in 1929 with a location in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France. After a deep understanding ot the villa, students were expected to design their
own house. The site locates in downtown Toronto at the corner of Macpherson Avenue and Rathnelly Avenue. The house accomodates two inhabitants with different professions and requests. Visiting the sites and using the precedent house’s design idea for reference was important to build the concept.

Eileen Gray followed Le Corbusier’s Five Point of Architecture while integrating her own advanced, technological style and form. Villa E-1027 consists of both private and public spaces throughout, taking the shape of an L form. The villa is elevated from the ground on pilotis, allowing the living space to be transformed by sunlight throughout the day and creating a seamless view of the Mediterranean Sea. Located in the center of the villa is a compact spiral staircase allowing access from the basement to the rooftop terrace. The South facing windows create an open façade, commonly seen throughout Le Corbusier’s work. The sliding window panels along the South wall, a technological advancement that was patented by Badovici in this villa, demanded the control of both the interior and exterior spaces. Her practical implementations of kinetic architecture were demonstrated throughout the villa as she believed there should be no wasted space. This is seen in instances such as the retractable doors and windows, light partition walls, lightweight and compact furnishing such as her classic adjustable chrome side table, and the built in storage elements. In the summer, the kitchen could be transformed into an open-air kitchen with partitions made of glass panelling that fold flat. When the sea is rough and the horizons gloomy, large bay windows facing south could be covered with a curtain, and the north facing windows open to the plush garden and lemon trees. It was her goal to have alternative horizons where masses of greenery replace the broad expanses of blue and grey. She believed that there should be no distinction between interior and exterior living space, she believed there should be a unity between both worlds.

Programing
A HOUSE FOR TWO INHABITANTS My clients are a couple, an artist who needs a north side studio and a geologist who requests a lap pool. The main concept is about the separation of different functional spaces and the views to the surroundings. Tunnel-like hallways have shorter height than the normal walls, and they connect spaces with different program together. The spaces from the outer to inner are a gradient of privacy and functions: working space - public living room - living spaces. The outer space is lifted from the ground with glass curtain walls facing the street side. This space is expected to create a sense of a show window because the finished artworks can be placed in front of the glass as a small gallery to the public as well as a means of publicity. The entrance is facing the North to the street side and it is hollowed out from the facade to create a porch. There is a mezzanine level in the public living room area with a skylight for relaxing, and the glass curtain wall runs through two levels provides views of the lap pool as well as the railway. The materials of the house are meant to be good sound insulation, since the quiet space with a dynamic view of the trains creates
relaxed harmony. On the Northern side, there are few steps leading up to a rooftop garden from the mezzanine level. Furthermore, in consider to blur the lines between being inside or outdoors, which was inspired by E1027, there is a staircase leads direct access from the courtyard to the mezzanine level. Also for the same reason, glass bi-folding doors are placed in the hallways and in the living room for access to either the lap pool. The shower beside the living room is designed referring to E1027, as she embodies shower in a public area; which is more convenient for access to the pool. Sliding doors are implemented as well for the master bedroom, so it is not completely enclosed and it have visual interaction with the living room. In the basement, there is a dark room for the artist to develop films. Under the bedroom side, there is a party room, activities such as home theatre and party night can be held here. Instead of common walls, the material of the lap pool are designed to be seen-through glass, which provides views directly to the pool from the basement as well as natural daylight.

04 Academic: Lima, Peru City Analysis Individual part: Hydrological Cycles + Systems Collaboration with Haiqa Nisar, Haodong Yang, Eric Chen, Zahra Syed, Tina Siassi, and Minwoo Kim (Group Presentation) Fall 2018 Course Code: ARC386 | 12 weeks Instructor: Fadi Masoud
BACKGROUND Peru has a complex and intricate ecological history that has been highlighted in the following visual representations. The city of Lima presents an intriguing look into the various aspects of landscape ecology as seen in the coastal country. The chosen section cut shows a variety of land conditions which provide further information through the categories of “past”, “present”, and “future”. Our group notes trends and patterns clearly visible through graphic strategies; conditions unique to Peru such as the placement of the Ring of Fire, tectonic plate movements, and
water shortages have increased in urgency. As such, in order to combat these trends, the group notes that the government of Peru will have to take further strides in reviewing and creating policies to better control issues such as glacial melt-water. While certain actions have already been taken, a closer look and greater funding should be allotted to long term research in order to create pre-emptive plans and solutions. This will allow for greater likelihood of biodiversity sustainability whereas on the current course, Peru will lose many species to extinction.

200km
The process of sediments and processes that lead to the formation of rocks in Lima, Peru is highly linked to the changes in the sea levels, glacial cycles, and tectonics. It is important to understand the impact of Lima’s location in relation to sedimentary deposits and the manner in which this affects resource reserves and the area’s population. Lima is situated on alluvial fan deposits of two rivers. This fact is argued to have critical implications on factors such as pollution, and replenishment of groundwater reserves in addition to infrastructures practices and the frequency of earthquakes. The groundbreaking connection of sedimentology and hydrology, climate, and infrastructure will make an important contribution to my argument and provide a dynamic way of examining these fundamental aspects in Lima, Peru.

In Mozambique, one child out of five is not educated; 14% of children between two and nine years old are disabled. Although there is a 3 meters height difference between the highest point and the lowest point of the site current topography, every parts of the school should be accessible to the disabled. In order to adapt the future school with the site, big steps refer to the shape of contour lines are put through the whole site, as well as ramps with specific arc geometric design. Local building materials like compressed earth blocks, wood, iron sheets, and cement are considered, since the school will be built by volunteers and construction workers with no help of heavy equipment. There is a list of objective program of the school spaces is proposed such as classrooms, covered schoolyard, closed kitchen, bathrooms, etc. There is a big tree, known as Marula or Canhoeiro, in the middle of the site.
