Report details substance abuse among apprentices and tradespeople A report from the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (CAF-FCA) reveals that drug and excessive alcohol use is more common in the trades than in the general Canadian population.

The report, Understanding Substance Use Among Apprentices in the Skilled Trades, was conducted for CAF-FCA by the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation with funding from Health Canada, and included interviews with 1,194 apprentices, tradespeople, employers, union trainers and representatives from substance use organizations. It found that 59 per cent of respondents of all ages have used alcohol excessively in the past year (five or more drinks at one time), while prescription and non-prescription opioids are often misused, with women more likely to use opioids, sedatives and psychedelics than men.

The report also found that there is higher use of cannabis and stimulants in the trades than among the general population, with 40 per cent of respondents saying they use cannabis, compared to 21 per cent of all Canadians, and 11 per cent saying they use cocaine, crack, amphetamines or methamphetamines, compared to 2.5 per cent of all Canadians. Apprentices and pre-apprentices are more likely to use cannabis, while journeypeople are more likely to use opioids and sedatives.

Socializing and partying were cited by respondents as reasons for using alcohol, psychedelics and stimulants, although 50 per cent of respondents said they use prescription opioids for managing pain either from a work or non-work injury.

The consequences of substance use vary considerably, with most respondents not reporting harm from the use of substances, and workplace culture playing a role in the type of substances used and whether or not individuals decide to seek help. Participants reporting use of opioids, sedatives and stimulants showed the most concern about their substance use, with 66, 59 and 52 per cent respectively saying they had either a lot or little concerns. A majority of respondents also indicated wanting more information from their workplace about drug use, including drug testing (68 per cent), treatment assistance (56 per cent), and the effects of substance use on their health and well-being (55 per cent).

Based on this evidence the report concludes that employers and unions could do more to provide communication to employees about substance use, as well as offering a range of holistic services designed to help employees manage drug and alcohol use. Resources are available at caf-fca.org.

Quebec phases out use of fuel oil for residential buildings Quebec’s regulation respecting oil-fired heating appliances takes full effect as of December 31, 2023, meaning it will be prohibited to install oil-fuelled boilers, furnaces and water heaters in existing residential buildings. The regulation covers residential buildings of no more than 600 m2 and three storeys. The installation of oil heating appliances in new residential buildings in Quebec has been prohibited since December 31, 2021. The regulation also prohibits repairs to boilers and furnaces installed over 20 years before, or water heaters installed over 10 years before, with the exception of repairs or replacement of motors, or electronic components related to operation or safety controls. There are also exceptions for residential buildings supplied by an independent electricity distribution network. The regulations kick in as the province prepares to table a bill requiring the reporting of energy performance upgrades for commercial and large buildings. At the same time, Montreal has banned the use of natural gas, including for heating and hot water systems, in new buildings of up to three storeys by October 2024, and by April 2025 in larger new builds. quebec.ca

Program offers free heat pumps to income-eligible households Ontario’s Energy Affordability Program is now offering free cold climate air source heat pumps to eligible low-income households with electric heating. Qualifying households will receive both the heat pump and installation free of charge. The program covers both homeowners and renters. Other upgrades include energy efficient appliances, window air conditioners, and smart thermostats.

Research shows value of residential heat pumps A report from the Canadian Climate Institute reveals that heat pumps are the lowest-cost option for homeowners to heat and cool their homes. The report, Heat pumps pay off: Unlocking lower cost heating and cooling in Canada, looks at the cost of heating and cooling choices in buildings in Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax, and compares the costs of different heat pump configurations against gas furnaces and air conditioning. The Canadian Climate Institute has also introduced an online calculator allowing homeowners to find the lowest-cost option for homes. Toronto offers homeowners subsidy for flood protection devices The City of Toronto is offering homeowners a subsidy of up to $3,400 per property to install flood protection devices. Owners of a single-family, duplex or triplex residential home can apply for the subsidy for each property to install a backwater valve or a sump pump, or to sever and cap a home’s storm sewer or external weeping tile connection. Task Force says Canadians want climate-resilient housing The newly-launched Task Force for Housing and Climate has released the results of a poll it says shows that more than four in five Canadians want new housing to be resilient to the impacts of climate change.

The poll also shows that Canadians are worried about housing affordability and the climate crisis, and are looking to government and industry to find a fix. The task force is an independent group led by co-chairs Lisa Raitt, former deputy leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, and Don Iveson, former mayor of Edmonton. The task force will convene until April 2024, when it is expected to release a Policy Blueprint for Affordable and Climate-Safe Housing Growth housingandclimate.ca

BCIT marks funding milestone for Trades and Technology Complex The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) has announced it has reached $33 million in funding towards its new Trades and Technology Complex in Burnaby, BC. The $220-million complex, announced in February 2023, will be a combination of new and renovated buildings, plus enhanced campus infrastructure, and will feature a flexible learning environment with an energy-efficient and sustainable design. Intended to train future trades and technology professionals, the complex will have the capacity for 700 new full-time students annually. While the province of BC and BCIT have committed $162.6 million in funding for the complex, including $26 million from BCIT, the school has already raised $33 million in contributions from 45 industry organizations and individuals through its INSPIRE Campaign. The campaign also supports the longterm redevelopment plan for the BCIT Burnaby campus, estimated at more than $680 million. bcit.ca

BC mandates flush toilets on construction sites BC is requiring that flushing toilets be installed on construction work sites with more than 25 workers. The move comes after the BC Building Trades union representing construction workers called on the province to add flush toilets.

The recommendation was also included in a report commissioned by the BC Building Trades that details the conditions of construction site toilets.

The union has been asking the government to require flush toilets onsite since the pandemic revealed health and safety concerns. Quebec has mandated similar regulations for flushing toilets on worksites since 2015. bcbuildingtrades.org getflushed.ca

Permanent injuries on jobsites are down for 2023, says TSSA

Loans available for large building retrofits in Ontario

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority’s (TSSA) 2023 Annual Public Safety Report shows there has been a reduction in permanent injuries within its regulated sectors in Ontario in the 2023 fiscal year. During the reporting period (May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023), TSSA saw permanent injuries drop more than 30 per cent, compared to the 10-year average. Outcome-based regulatory initiatives over the past three years include compliance standards to cover more devices, the Enhanced Authorization program to follow up on authorizations that haven’t been renewed, and the Compliance Support program to work with owners and contractors with high-risk devices and operations to address their specific issues.

The Canadian Infrastructure Bank (CIB) and Enbridge Sustain are partnering to offer up to $300 million in loans for deep energy retrofits of large buildings in Ontario. The program will allow large buildings to pursue energy transition goals that result in at least a 30-per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

The retrofit projects will be developed and completed through a partnership between Enbridge Sustain and Blackstone Energy Services, which will offer decarbonization solutions.

EMBRACE THE CHAT

I

t’s been 47 years, and approximately nine code books, since I started in the trade in 1976. For about half that time I’ve been an instructor at SAIT Polytechnic. I started teaching in 1990 for a couple of years, and then returned to SAIT in 2005. I have taught approximately 4,000 apprentices. I have taught all subjects (plumbing, gas, heating and blueprint reading) in first, second, and third year back in the 1990s, but now, I get to specialize in plumbing code, basic refrigeration and 3D technology.

One might ask, “Don’t you get bored teaching code for so many years or mainly fourth-year subjects?” My response is, I think I would have if not for technology. First of all, if you have been teaching basically the same thing for over 10 years, I would hope you are no longer reading the modules or maybe you haven’t been paying attention to yourself. Having the opportunity to specialize in one subject affords you the opportunity to go deep into the material and hopefully design your own projects that mirror the curriculum. This is where true learning begins.

If my memory serves me correctly, I have been corrected in plumbing code clauses or interpretation six or seven times throughout that time period.

I’m proud of that fact, but it’s not rocket science. If you are teaching the same thing over and over again, you better know it pretty well yourself. It’s funny, if you teach something for a long time you tend to think you are always right, hence I’m so confident that usually if a student questions me on a subject, which I encourage them to do, I usually propose a gentlemen’s bet to see if they are right.

WHEN YOU’RE WRONG …

I was wrong once regarding a wet venting/stack venting clause found in Part 2-Plumbing Systems 2.5.8.4. 4 Vent Stacks or Stack Vents. This happened a few years ago with a very bright third-year apprentice. When I teach vent stacks in third year, I try to explain the “more than” rules, meaning the code dictates that you are required to install a vent stack when a building is more than four storeys (2.5.4.2. 1) with plumbing fixtures draining from each storey.

The question that was asked was in reference to 2.5.8.4.4, which talks about stack vent sizing not vent stacks. Now it is easy to get these mixed up as stack vents and vent stacks have the same rules even though they are different looking. This

is not where I errored, it was in using the same logic of how stack vents are sized on a five-storey wet vent. I assumed the wet vent had to have plumbing fixtures draining into each floor like the vent stack requirement.

It was assumed that you would need plumbing fixtures on each floor of a five-storey building as it is with vent stacks, however you do not need the requirement of plumbing fixtures on each of the five floors. You could have two floors with no plumbing fixtures on the five floors, yet you would still need to size the stack vent the same size as the wet vent. Sure enough, after teaching it incorrectly for several years, I was wrong as the clause says nothing about fixtures on each floor: (2.5.8.4. 4) a stack vent serving a wet vent stack that

How could I get this wrong? I can’t remember the details of the other five times I was wrong, but it did happen. My diligence in knowing the code inside and out was to win the confidence of the students. I used to tell new teachers that if you expect students to respect you it’s a must to win the class over.

Back in the day, in order to win class respect, I would memorize three or four code clauses and continually refer to them, thus appearing as if I memorized the whole code book. It actually worked or bought me enough time to actually memorize most of the important clauses over the years.

INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY I’ve always tried to stay ahead of the technology curve, actually to keep myself interested just as much as the students.

It is true some teachers Therefore, I’ve designed are still opposed to PowerPoint, 3D, and tech usage, similar to hologram animations to the 1970s when math explain the code. Hang on a second. Is this possible? Well, we are getting closer to it. This intake I decided to increase my use of artificial intelligence, ChatGPT and Google.

I personally love to embrace tech and see how we can use it. Hence, I decided to write a few assignments on D2L with ChatGPT and see how it went. That’s not all. I admonished my students to not trust everything I taught them, or what they read in their sometimes-antiquated modules.

Here’s one of the corrections. In the first week of class, a student confronted me. I can’t remember if they checked ChatGPT to correct me or if it was off the top of their head, but either way we did check ChatGPT after to prove who was right. Artificial Intelligence is a wonderful tool. It not only clarifies things, it can also give you a deeper understanding of the subject. After teaching water treatment for 20 years, I basically memorized the pH (potential hydrogen) chart from our fourthyear modules (see Figure 1). I explained to the class that the pH levels we used to use in swimming pools determined high pH or alkaline and the low pH would be acidic.

The pH scale is out of 14, therefore the most alkaline would be purple in colour and the blue colour would be the next most alkaline. The lowest or most acidic would be red in colour and the next most acidic would be yellow in colour.

The student claimed the high on the pH scale was blue and low on the pH scale was red, and they were adamant they were right. I searched it out on my ChatGPT app and let it announce out loud which colours were right. Sure enough, ChatGPT claimed that the student was right and I was wrong. I couldn’t be wrong I thought, so I put up Figure 1 from my module on the overhead. We discovered I was half right and half wrong, as was the student.

I expect fourth-years to use all available supplementary information from the internet too.

What a can of worms I opened. I had to add three more corrections to my 20-year-old list of six teaching mistakes.

The next day a student differed from my understanding on the gas control valve that standard operating temperature or normal was 140⁰F on a 40 US gallon gas hot water tank. Now I have been teaching this for 20 years from the modules. The student claimed the tanks now come in 20-degree increments and now normal was 120⁰F. After searching AI, we discovered this to be true on some of the new tanks.

enhanced at 115⁰F. I always advise not to turn HW tanks too low as this could be a problem if the hot water became stagnant if the gas control valve is on pilot while the consumer is on holidays, for example.

Now the reason hot water lines in commercial buildings normally range between 100⁰F to 120⁰F is because it’s typically on a recirc line continuously moving hence there is no chance of developing legionella. This discussion was all elevated and enhanced by information found on ChatGPT. I believe artificial intelligence is awesome; now even new teachers can have little fear about teaching new subjects as the internet can be a teaching and learning tool used by all. In the near future students will learn faster than ever. This is why embracing the ChatGPT or artificial intelligence in general, can probably give you a deeper understanding of any subject matter. The next challenge is how to mark tests while letting my students use ChatGPT but that is a subject for another day.

From bland to grand Commercial washrooms are changing for the better, with elevated design, smart technology and products that focus on performance and efficiency.

C

ommercial washrooms look significantly different than they did just a few years ago. As well as a greater focus on hygiene and touchless fixtures following the pandemic, public restrooms are being reinvented with colours, materials and modern finishes that mimic residential design, but that are durable enough to withstand busy high-use applications. Meanwhile, building owners are investing in plumbing products that minimize water, energy and maintenance costs, while boosting performance and efficiency.

UPGRADED DESIGN “For years commercial bathrooms had an institutional atmosphere,” says Teresita Deogrades, leader, commercial products for Lixil Americas (Canada).

“Designers and architects are not only creating a clean experience, but elevating the experience with new finishes and materials. Trends in residential bathrooms continue to make their way to commercial bathrooms, with coloured finishes on faucets and flush valves. Matte black is still popular, but we are seeing brushed gold and matte white. In terms of ceramics, sinks, toilets, urinals are also no longer looking institutional but have a beautiful thoughtful aesthetic.”

Dianne Orlina, commercial senior channel manager for Kohler, has seen influences from residential design translate into commercial spaces as well, with finishes such as matte black, brushed nickel and gold and brass tones. Kohler has “also seen an uptick in the desire for bundled solutions to be able to offer coordinated solutions to complete the toilet space, urinal space and lavatory space. Lavatory systems specifically have been of high interest to ease that design and specification process.”

Other changes include more public washrooms designed to be gender-neutral or communal, features that optimize space such as trough sinks and corner sinks, and extras such as water bottle fill stations and spouts, sanitizer holders (including built into sinks), and water filtration systems. Expect to see design additions such as the “use of more antibacterial materials for flooring and walls, modern accents, new finishes for toilets and urinals, and more colours to create a pleasant and stress-free environment” says Nisha Goruck, sales coordinator at FGI Industries, Ltd.

SMARTER TECH Building owners are adding Internet of Things (IoT) technology to public washrooms to make maintenance more efficient and to avoid problems by monitoring real-time data. “Select bathroom fixtures now incorporate IoT technology allowing the fixture to collect a broader range of information,” explains Du. “The information can be used to schedule cleaning staff more efficiently, detect when a fixture is out of service and needs repair, or indicate if consumables such as soap, paper towels or bathroom tissue need replenishment.”

Other commercial plumbing technology now on the market is designed to boost performance, save water and energy, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce labour during installation and maintenance. “Reducing the water consumption of plumbing fixtures through better design without reducing functionality or performance is essential,” says Du. “For example, pressurecompensating aerators on faucets provide consistent flow rates down to 0.35 gallons per minute regardless of water pressure. In addition, older toilets may have used six gallons of water per flush, but new models can consume as little as 1.1 gallons per flush.”

Orlina has also noticed increasing demand for more accessible design, as part of the larger trend toward making public spaces more welcoming. “Costs will always be a driver for the commercial space – that will never change. We are seeing a shift to not only support accessibility, but to support a fully inclusive restroom, so regardless of who you are, the space is designed for you.”

“Water saving, performance efficiency and cost saving has always been top of mind for customers,” agrees Deogrades, “but as we move forward to a more inclusive environment there is heightened focus on accessibility in spaces, such as wheelchair accessibility, right hand trip levers, grab bars, touchless activation, faucet reach, and genderneutral bathrooms.”

The move to showers over baths in hotels and institutions due to space, accessibility and hygiene issues continues, and Deogrades says that she’s receiving “ongoing inquiries on shower bases with wheelchair ramp accessibility.”

TV host shares the wonder of science

W

hat better outlet for a passionate scientist could there be than hosting the longest-running science television show? In 2024, Anthony Morgan, together with co-host Sarika Cullis-Suzuki, will bring a new perspective to the iconic The Nature of Things. Morgan is an award-winning science communicator, PhD researcher, startup founder and game designer, who for 20 years has worked to change how people see, think and talk about science in their everyday lives.

Morgan has very specific goals as science communicator on The Nature of Things and wants to bring awareness about just what drives scientists. “Many people have this idea of what a scientist is; that’s a lab coat wearing, really serious, dour person who is only focused on the most important things. People may have this misperception that scientists are also not humans, that they don’t have fun and see their friends on the weekend, and can’t be silly and playful. I bring a new focus on not just the profound, but also the playful. To me striking that balance is really important.

“The other thing that I want to bring is a great focus on what science actually is. Science is not what you say, it’s how. I’m not concerned with making sure that people memorize the shape of a pencil molecule or the speed of light. I’m more concerned with how we come to know the things we know about the world.

“Science is very much a process that you go through. When you have a question you don’t know the answer to and you get to understand the world better and make the world a better place − the kind of place you want to live in.”

The mix of playfulness and process focus will help communicate what drives scientists, according to Morgan.

“Scientists are compassionate people first and foremost. They do what they do because they are trying to improve quality of life for others. To be compassionate means that you act like the suffering of others matters as much as your own.

“While we do have prescriptions around how people ought to live their lives, if we all want to see our species and the other species on this planet flourish, we don’t make those prescriptions without an awareness of what it means for people’s everyday lives.”

Paired with that inclusive approach, Morgan also believes that addressing important issues such as climate change effectively will require a different approach, one that involves better communication and a sense of intellectual humility.

“Do I know how to stop climate change and save the world?

I think it would be absurd to say that I do. I’m not sure. What I suspect is that we’re going to have to find ways to have better conversations around disagreements, because we all have blind spots. If I think electrification is a great thing or if I don’t, if I think nuclear power is the way we should be going or if I don’t, there are good reasons to be wary and to be excited about all these kinds of options. Walking into conversations with the widest eyes possible and with the least naivity possible is going to be the best way for us to make the wisest decisions.

“People in the sciences have been yelling for a long time about what we should be doing, what individuals should be doing to address climate change. And they’re not wrong.

But that’s not the whole picture. We have to understand the real barriers that people are facing when they’re trying to implement some of these changes in their lives. Sometimes it’s comfort, sometimes it’s not. Maybe driving a big truck to work is your only way to get to work and to be able to work.

“I firmly believe the approach that science communication has taken on climate change is maybe not the right one. I think we have been far too righteous and self-righteous at times, even though we’re not wrong. But our rightness does not excuse our rudeness.

“Bringing more compassion to those conversations is a recognition that the changes we’re asking people to make will bring genuine forms of suffering and those forms of suffering matter. We need to figure out ways we can help to ameliorate that suffering without simultaneously destroying our planet.”

BEING SOCIAL Morgan’s interest in constructive communication and his current PhD work at Toronto Metropolitan University focus on how we can reduce polarization to have better conversations around controversial science. He believes science is the most powerful tool for solving big problems such as climate change, Covid-19, and misinformation, but he has come to the conclusion that the bottlenecks to solving them aren’t technical, they’re social.

“There are things we can do to have better conversations, identifying shared values, practicing curiosity and having more informal contact.” Toward that end, Morgan regularly hosts a conversational pub game called “Freestyle Socials” across the Greater Toronto Area through his company Science Everywhere.

“In a nutshell we show up at a venue. We put tape in the middle of the floor. We ask questions, and then we make our audience pick a side. We tell our audience, ‘You have to decide. What does your gut tell you?’ They’re all surprised. We put a microphone in the middle of the floor, and each of them gets to explain their position to the other. The only rule for the game is if you hear an idea that surprises you or makes you question, you should switch sides.

“It really is just a place where we can practice changing our minds because we’re having kind of a tough time with that right now.”

CAREER PLANS While at Laurentian University studying science communication, Morgan had the opportunity to chat with Dan Riskin, another Mechanical Business cover personality (see MB archives, January/ February 2022 and July/August 2013). It was there that he announced his intention to take science communication to Riskin’s level. “The program at Laurentian included field trips to go and meet professional science communicators and see them in their natural habitat and watch them work. We got the chance to sit down with Dan at Daily Planet and talk to him, just pick his brains and ask questions. He was also asking us questions. Dan asked us what we thought we’d want to do. I said, I want to do what you’re doing. I’d love to be doing a job just like yours. If I’m so lucky. He took it in the spirit that I intended, I hope.” A few years later the two worked together and had a good laugh about it.

DISTRICT ENERGY SYSTEMS: PURSUING NET ZERO EMISSIONS An opportunity for contractors

T

he climate change goals for Canada and other nations are to reach net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050. This objective has sparked a number of new and current emission-reducing technologies to be introduced or reexamined including electric vehicles, heating/cooling systems, 3D printing construction, the use of hydrogen as a fuel source and CO2 as a refrigerant.

One such technology that has been around for more than 100 years is district heating systems (DHS). DHS involve a residential or commercial community group sharing a central heating system typically using steam or water heated by sources that create less GHG emissions than traditional fossil fuels.

Underground conduits (pipes) distribute the heat amongst the community and metering determines the heat energy used by each customer for billing purposes.

The net zero objective has increased recent interest in the DHS option as businesses, utilities and governments strive to lower carbon emissions. DHS reduce carbon emissions and cost per customer to a level competitive with individual heating systems and are particularly appealing in city centres and other highly populated areas where significant numbers of large customers create economies of scale to reduce energy bills.

District systems and net zero To provide a net zero approach to DHS, the systems should use carbon reducing heat sources including waste wood from forests and building sites or reprocessed/reused waste heat from industrial or commercial processes. Other renewable options include geothermal technology, solar panels or biomass fuels.

District systems are not restricted to heating.

District cooling systems (DCS) have been used since the late 20th century with the first DCS built in 1992 in Sweden. The U.S. is also a leader in DCS with chilled water systems using cold lake or ocean water in the cooling cycle.

There are other advantages to DHS. One expert notes, “District heating allows customers to save space and expenses, by avoiding individual installation, operation, and maintenance of in building heating, cooling, and water-heating equipment.” DHS savings also include heat sourced from a more thermally efficient combined heat and power system.

Though DES are being used in single-family housing communities, they are typically located where many commercial or industrial buildings are grouped together. These locations include colleges/universities, healthcare sites, and urban downtown and business areas. By combining the energy needs of a large number of buildings, district systems become appealing to investors and create a stable economic situation.

IEA report on DHS A 2022 report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported a three per cent increase in district heating system production in 2021 compared to 2020, while district heating increased to eight per cent of the worldwide heating needs.

However, IEA also stated, “the decarbonisation potential of district heating is largely untapped, as fossil fuels still dominate district network supplies globally.”

The agency stated that to meet the 2050 net zero objective, a significant and urgent effort is needed to improve the existing systems’ efficiencies, move them to renewable and waste heat sources and develop infrastructure where there is “dense heat demand.” The report noted almost 90 per cent of the global district heating still uses fossil fuels.

District Energy Systems

SECTOR AIRPORT COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY

The Drake Landing Solar Community (DLSC) is a well-known DHS installation located in Okotoks, AB. The unique feature of DLSC is that more than 90 per cent of space heating needs for the community’s 52 single-detached homes is met by solar thermal energy.

The DLSC is also the first major implementation in North America of a technology known as seasonal solar thermal energy storage. Solar thermal energy is collected in the summer, stored underground, and then returned to the homes as heat during the winter.

DOWNTOWN/UTILITY GOVERNMENT HEALTHCARE

An opportunity for contractors Some feedback from contractors regarding DHS suggests it may become a threat to contractors.

Robert Jang owner of All-Pro Services, a mechanical contractor in Port Coquitlam, BC disagrees, “DHS has been around as a heating system approach for more than a century however, it’s relatively new in Canada. A specialized area of mechanical contracting, DHS offers contractors the opportunity to expand their services.”

Jang explained that plumbing contractors servicing multi-residential buildings have traditionally been given responsibility for heating service by default.

Plumbing contractors are concerned they will lose this work if DHS systems are introduced. The key is to have the skill and knowledge base to move into the DHS market. “The reality is they will lose the work because of the special needs of DHS design, installation and

All-Pro has been in business for more than 23 years providing installation and service of commercial and industrial mechanical systems. The company moved into DHS systems and it now makes up 40 to 50 per cent of their work depending on the year. This work includes installation of new DHS systems, extending existing systems and expanding the capacity of systems.

“Mechanical work on DHS systems is different from our normal work and at the same time consistent with mechanical principals. There are more moving parts in these systems and the sector is heavily regulated,” said Jang. “More specialized staff was not needed for DHS; we have simply expanded the knowledge and experience of our current employees.”

He added, “DHS systems provide more environmentally acceptable results because heating for many buildings is centralized, less equipment has to be maintained and systems are more efficient than individual systems for each building or unit.”

DHS means less energy load, better maintained equipment, as well as more monitoring and data collection from the system.

DHS is a multi-faceted sector with a variety of mechanical work such as piping for heating distribution, electrical and work on energy transfer stations. “Another interesting part of the work is the broad base of cooperation between the trades and other partners involved in the DHS system,” said Jang. “This approach works well as all parties collaborate to make the system perform properly.”

While there are some intriguing projects, such as Cogswell in Halifax, NS, Canada is well behind other nations in embracing DES systems. The most recent statistics (2008) indicated that there were approximately 1,200 DES systems operating in Canada which includes only a very small fraction of buildings and heating/cooling energy use in the country. Though the number of DES systems in the country has obviously increased since 2008, it has not increased to any substantial degree.

Many experts including IEA are calling for more emphasis on DHS as one solution for the 2050 net zero target. In March 2023, one expert noted, “Jurisdictions with well developed distribution networks for heat have an additional tool in their energy transition toolbox which [most] Canadian cities do not have – district heating. Globally, district heating systems are connecting consumers to a wider range of affordable and reliable renewable energy sources including geothermal, solar thermal, renewable electricity, biofuel, and waste heat recovery. This puts Canadian cities and consumers at a disadvantage in the transition to a low carbon economy.”

In addition, most DHS systems in Canada are using fossil fuels as heat energy for the system. The country needs more DHS systems that operate on cheaper renewable energy sources.

The economies of scale and efficiency of heating/cooling being provided by relatively few locations versus hundreds of thousands of individual building systems will be a significant energy, cost and emissions reduction step towards the net zero target. For contractors, a substantial increase in the use of DHS is a few years off. However, it might be a good idea to explore this opportunity now.

The Cogswell ATDES would transfer thermal energy from the treated effluent at the nearby Halifax Wastewater Treatment Facility to the new buildings via a network of underground pipes. The ATDES would include an energy centre located at the treatment facility that would provide heat exchange capacity between the wastewater effluent stream and the ATDES piping loop; supply (red) and return (blue) pipe loops; an energy transfer station to connect each building to the ATDES, and individual mechanical rooms located in each new building.

Rating performance Coefficient of performance (COP) is how the performance is rated for all heat pumps. This is the heat output divided by electrical input. The greater the difference between the source and sink temperature, the lower the COP or performance (see Figure 1).

y now most of us in the hydronics and HVAC world know of heat pumps. The concept or technology is certainly not new.

Air to air heat pumps have been around for decades. Air to air devices basically pull heat from the outdoor air mass and move or “pump” it indoors.

Air to water heat pumps (A2Whp) are not new either. They are getting a lot more attention recently with the movement away from fossil fuels to electric sources. As the name implies, the A2Whp move the energy from outside ambient air conditions into a fluid, instead of into air in ducts. This makes them ideal for both hydronic and DHW loads. Just to throw some more initials into the discussion, you may see ccA2Whp. This is basically a designation for cold climate models.

As we look at replacing boilers with heat pumps a few challenges need to be addressed with heat pumps. First, the outside air temperature has an effect on both output and efficiency. Second, is the need to have temperatures in the 160°F to 180°F range for homes with fin tube air handlers and cast iron radiators. This is because heat pumps just can’t efficiently deliver temperatures that high.

Also, having sufficient electrical service to handle the addition power consumption is required. Therefore, in many cases, an A2Whp will not be a drop-in replacement for a fuel-fired boiler.

Let’s take a look at the two basic technology options: a split system and a monobloc.

A split system, as shown in Figure 2, has the compressor and electronics inside the building. This offers a bit more protection for the electronics, and compressors. It requires refrigerant piping between the indoor and outdoor units. This may not be in the repertoire of some plumbing or hydronic installers. There may be some concerns about noise and vibration with the compressor located indoors.

Many buildings would benefit from having an insulation and weatherization upgrade to lower heat load and the supply water temperature. This in turn lowers the fuel costs. It is always a good first step to look into lowering the heat and cooling load. The sizing of the equipment occurs after the loads are calculated with the energy upgrades.

In some cases, a supplemental heat source may be needed. This would be enabled only for those colder design days where the heat pump falls behind, or the efficiency drops.

For retrofit jobs you may chose to leave the boiler in place for back up and redundancy.

Another option is to offer a low temperature emitter upgrade.

Radiant and panel radiators, properly sized and installed, are excellent options. Keep in mind in most heating climates, a home is at design condition for a short period of time. Weather data exists to narrow down to temperature history in most areas of Canada.

Cold climate air to water models are becoming available to provide better efficiencies in cold climate regions. Manufacturers of HPs will have available charts, tables and formulas to see how the equipment matches the proposed building requirements.

More familiar and comfortable for hydronic folks like myself, is a monobloc, as shown in Figure 3. All the refrigeration components are within the outdoor cabinet.

The system is pre-charged, so installers are able to install these without refrigeration equipment. In this version, a glycol-based fluid is circulated from the outdoor unit into the building. It is more plug and play for the installer working on hydronics. This will be a glycol-based system transporting the heat energy from outside to inside. As such, the glycol fluid will require a bit more pumping power. There are obviously pros and cons to both the split and monobloc systems.

The comfort range for A2Whp is around the 120°F to 140°F operating temperature. So, when faced with replacing a hydronic boiler, that can be a deal breaker. In some cases, it may be possible to lower the load of the building. Lowering the load would allow lower supply water temperatures which are more conducive to heat pumps.

A true professional will learn all the ins and outs of heat pump applications and present these requirements and options to a perspective buyer so there are no surprises. More and more A2Whp training is being made available to help an installer make informed design choices. In some places simulation programs can help with sizing and selection. Use these to determine viability before spending hours on a bid that may not even be feasible.

To help drive this technology many rebate and incentive programs are being offered. Check for any rebates or incentives available from local utilities or government agencies.

Another option under study is to buy electricity when rates are low and the utility has excess capacity ramped up. The consumer is alerted by a signal sent out to grid customers. A smart control could “choose” when to charge a hot water buffer tank, as an example. Electricity at a few cents a KWH and a two to three COP makes the heat pump option look very enticing to home and building owners.

Reach out to manufacturers and various industry associations and media for current training opportunities specific to A2Whps.

Poor designs and applications give an entire industry a black eye. Hydronic-savvy contractors and suppliers can ride this electrification wave to nice and profitable work and sales.

round source heat pumps (GSHPs) can significantly improve the efficiency of heating and cooling systems and are considered a renewable energy technology. A GSHP system is technology that can provide space and/or water conditioning for buildings.

Heat pump systems do not create energy. They just move it around.

What differentiates GSHPs from airsource heat pumps is that these systems use either the earth (ground) or water, (either groundwater or open bodies of water), as a heat source and sink for heat transfer. In contrast, air-source heat pumps use the air as their heat source and sink.

In cooling mode, the GSHP system removes heat from the building and transfers it into the ground (or another heat sink such as a pond).

In heating mode, the GSHP system reverses this process, removing heat from the ground (or another heat source) and transferring it into the building.

GSHP systems are classified as renewable energy technologies because the resource being used is the constant temperature of the heat sink and source. GSHPs are also known as geoexchange heat pumps, ground coupled heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, earth coupled heat pumps, ground source systems, groundwater source heat pumps, well water heat pumps, and solar energy heat pumps, among other variations.

GSHP systems are composed of indoor units, a ground coupled heat exchanger (GCHX), and water circulation systems. There are two types of indoor heat transfer units designated by the primary method of heat transfer. Water-to-air units condition air and water-to-water units condition water. The conditioned air or water is then circulated to condition the building (see Figure 1).

• Open-loop systems use wells or open bodies of water as direct

heat transfer mediums. Groundwater is pumped to the GSHP unit’s heat exchanger, where heat is transferred directly from the water loop to the GSHP. Groundwater must be filtered to remove sediment, minerals, and other corrosive agents. To reduce this impact, open-loop systems can include a plate-and-frame heat exchanger for the whole system. This allows heat exchange between the well water and the indoor building loop while separating the two. Open-loop wells generally depend on groundwater flow to continually renew the groundwater resource at the desired temperature.

• Closed-loop systems use a heat transfer fluid, such as an antifreeze

solution, inside a sealed pipe to exchange heat with earth or a body of water. A heat exchange pipe is buried in the ground, either horizontally or vertically, or submerged in a body of water. In a closed-loop system, heat transfer occurs in the ground between the heat transfer fluid and the soil (or water) and again between the heat transfer fluid and the GSHP.

Direct-expansion systems use copper coils directly installed underground for a direct exchange of heat between the refrigerant and earth. However, because of the high costs of materials and installation, as well as durability and other possible issues, these systems are rarely installed.

Hybrid systems incorporate additional heating or cooling components into the system to reduce ground loop requirements when heating and cooling loads are unbalanced. These components may be a cooling tower or boiler.

OUTDOOR GCHX The outdoor GCHX is generally located in an open area near the mechanical room to minimize piping requirements between the GCHX and the indoor equipment.

The GCHX can include the following:

Pipes – For a closed-loop system, the GCHX consists of an underground (or underwater) network of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe.

Wells – For an open-loop system, the GCHX consists of production or source wells with pumps and discharge or injection wells. In some locations, a single well can be used for both the source and discharge well.

Auxiliary cooling and heating equipment – A cooling tower or boiler can be added to a system to reduce ground loop requirements when heating and cooling loads are unbalanced.

Several next-gen trucks hit the market 2023

has been a big year for the heavy-duty (HD) truck segment with both Ford and GM introducing next generation trucks. However, midsize has also been busy with a new gen of Toyota Tacoma and the GM twins arriving. The Canyon, Colorado and Tacoma are all getting a seven-year update.

If there is an overriding theme among these new trucks it’s off-road. Even if they don’t go off-road, they look as if they do. Apart from the looks though, each of these new trucks gets exclusive add-on off-road trim and equipment packages, even the HD trucks.

FORD SUPER DUTY F250 TO F450

Ford Super Duty got a redesign (now in its fourth generation) for 2023. However, as of this writing they have already debuted the 2024, which gets even more updates. Starting with powertrain – gone is the long-serving 6.2L V8 and the six-speed transmission. Now the 6.8L gasoline V8 is the base engine. It makes 400 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. The optional gas engine is the 7.3L V8 that makes 430 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque. The 6.7L Power Stroke diesel V8 returns with 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. There is also a HO version which bumps output up to 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. Note: the 2024 Super Duty introduces an engine update that makes the 6.8L Gas V8 engine Flex Fuel capable. Also in the 2024 is the available Pro Power Onboard generator and payload scales in the bed. There’s also a new tailgate camera that works with the tailgate down.

ABOUT FREEZE -DRYING Equipment used in the process is not actually used to cool the product - here is what it actually does.

B

ack in 2017, we covered the topic of vacuum cooling in a two-part discussion in Mechanical Business. In a vacuum cooling process, it is the vacuum process itself that provides the cooling effect. Therefore, the refrigeration equipment used in a vacuum cooler process is not actually used to cool the product.

The purpose of the refrigeration equipment is to remove as much moisture as possible from the air stream entering the vacuum pump. This is necessary to extend the life of the oil as much as possible, allow for longer running cycles and protect the vacuum pumps.

Vacuum cooling can evaporatively cool fruits and vegetables since they contain moisture. However, this process works best on products with a high surface-to-volume ratio since higher surface areas with less volume allows for a faster cooling process without damaging the product. It is important to note that moisture loss reduces the weight of the product, affecting its cost. In some cases, moisture is added so that less moisture is removed from cells of the product being cooled.

Vacuum pumps are used for the purpose of removing moisture to dry the product.

Removing moisture The freeze-drying process is very similar to vacuum cooling because vacuum pumps are used for the purpose of removing moisture. However, with freeze-drying, we are removing the moisture to dry the product. Also, the product is first frozen before it enters the freeze-drying chamber.

Freeze-dryers are available for commercial, industrial, and even residential applications.

This prevents drying of the exterior of the product, which in turn affects the texture and flavour.

Once the product is frozen, it is then transferred into the freezedrying chamber. In order to expose as much of the surface of the product as possible, it is laid out in trays. The frozen product should be loaded into the freeze-dryer as quickly as possible. Next, we will cover the sequence of operation that takes place within the freeze-dryer once the frozen product has been loaded into it.

Products with moisture will freeze as the temperature of the water in the product drops below the freezing point of water. For the best product quality, the freezing process should be completed as quickly as possible.

REFRIGERATION Cont’d from pg. 66 After loading, the chamber is closed. The chamber itself is built of very heavy-duty construction so it will not implode as the vacuum level increases. Also, the door must be sealed tightly. This prevents air/ moisture ingress during the process. A hydraulic door opening and closing system is typically used.

Once the chamber is loaded and sealed, the vacuum pumps are started.

In Figure 1 we see the vacuum cooling process that was reviewed back in 2017. The vacuum pump inlet is connected to the chamber and the outlet is the exhaust to atmosphere.

In theory, we could dry the product without the refrigeration circuit.

However, the large amount of moisture leaving the chamber will quickly contaminate the pump oil, affecting the bearings and seals inside the pump. As the moisture enters the oil, its ability to lubricate and protect these components decreases.

The refrigeration system must extract most of the moisture leaving the chamber, so it doesn’t enter the vacuum pump section. The lower the evaporator temperature, the more moisture will be removed, and the better the oil quality will be. If we didn’t have the refrigeration system to provide a cold trap, then it would be difficult for the vacuum pumps to achieve a deep vacuum. The last thing we would want is to have to change the oil in the vacuum pumps as this would allow the product to warm up somewhat, affecting the quality of the final product.

As mentioned, pre-freezing of the product is necessary in a freezedrying process. Another important difference with freeze-drying is the trays are warmed up as the vacuum pumps hold a deep vacuum.

This further promotes moisture removal.

In a vacuum cooling process, the moisture flashes from a liquid to a vapour. This vapour is also referred to as steam, even though the temperature of the steam is low. However, in a freeze-drying process, any moisture in the product is frozen. Normally, we would expect this frozen water to thaw and form water before it can become steam. Under vacuum, the frozen water “sublimates” directly to steam without first becoming a liquid. This is perhaps one of the most interesting characteristics of the freeze-drying process. Since the product was initially frozen, it holds its original shape. Even after the freeze-drying cycle has been completed, the shape of the product remains the same.

To achieve a high-vacuum level, a three-stage vacuum process is generally used.

The pumps are sized to remove the free air from the chamber and reduce the pressure of the chamber to a very low pressure which is in the high-vacuum range. This first stage is quickly able to remove most of the air from the chamber. However, this pump alone cannot pull the required vacuum level needed for the most effective process. Therefore, additional stages must be added.

Stages two and three are handled by a two-stage vacuum pump. This vacuum pump is generally of the rotary type, and requires a good-quality, moisture free oil to achieve a good vacuum level. This is the vacuum pump that is most vulnerable to moisture.

Note that the flow from the first vacuum pump is often vented directly to the atmosphere, instead of sending it to the two-stage rotary pump. In fact, the two-stage pump which handles the second and third stages can be left off during this period.

The two-stage pump will be energized once the chamber pressure has dropped to a sufficiently low enough level.

Freeze-drying provides a much higher product quality than conventional dehydration where the product is dried out using dry/heated air. In fact, freeze-dried products can be rehydrated back to (almost) their original moisture level, texture, etc. Therefore, freeze-drying is considered the best type of dehydration method for food products.

DIVERSE OFFERINGS KEY TO SUCCESS This year marks the 60th anniversary of Arpi’s Industries Inc. and while the company has grown to be a powerhouse in the industry it maintains the same old-school approach to customer service that its founder Arpi Berdin practiced.

The company was started out of the home of Arpi Berdin. Berdin took his truck and his dog, Chief, to homes and businesses around Calgary, AB, building up Arpi’s Heating with his hands, his skills and a commitment to the best possible service. His wife Malvina helped with the books and administration.

As the business grew Berdin renamed it Arpi’s Industries Inc. to better represent the breadth of service it provided. Having solid business in commercial and residential installation and service, and mechanical contracting and design, has contributed to the company’s longevity.

Lennox purchased the business in 1999 but Berdin purchased his company back in 2004 and continued to run the business with the same commitment to customers and staff that he was known for. Arpi’s president Julie Berdin is proud to note that of her 350 staff, about seven have been there for more than 35 years and 44 have been with the company for over 20 years. Having maintained its Best Managed status for seven years or more, the firm is a Platinum Club member in Canada’s Best Managed companies.

Like many business start ups Arpi’s ran with a small team − one man and his wife (and his dog). Unlike many start ups, Arpi’s grew and grew and is still a family business. Today, a 100,000-sq.-ft. facility in Calgary’s southeast end houses all of the company’s operations, including a 20,000-sq.-ft. sheet metal shop.

WORLDSKILLS TEAM CANADA 2024 BEGINS TRAINING T his summer Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) announced the 29 members of WorldSkills Team Canada 2024 competing in the 47th WorldSkills Competition in Lyon, France in September 2024.

The team of talented young people includes skilled trades apprentices from across the country from different industries. Team members were chosen as the highest ranking, age eligible participant in each Skill Area during the 2023 Skills Canada National Competition. The team is meeting to begin preparations for the competition, which includes various training activities and a mental preparation program.

The team includes Noah Harding in the Plumbing and Heating category, and Tyler Cherkowski in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning category.

Both competitors are from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary, AB. “I chose plumbing as a trade to follow in the footsteps of my dad and brother. I grew up around plumbing and around age 13 I fell in love with the jobs I would help them with, and I wanted to learn more about the trade,” says 20-year-old Harding. “I’m happy with the vast amount of knowledge that I’ve gained, and I enjoy the variety in the work. My career goal is to be part owner, with my brother and father, of Boulder Mechanical Contractors Ltd.”

Noah Harding will compete in the Plumbing and Heating category.

“In high school, I excelled in my welding, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing courses,” says Cherkowski, who is also 20. “My instructors pushed me to pursue a career in the trades, stressing the benefits which include: no debt, learning on the job, and rewarding work. I love the variety in my trade. I get to replace mechanical components, then use diagnostic skills on electrical problems. I also love the physics and science aspects of the job. I’m going to get my Red Seal certification in refrigeration and would like to eventually move into industrial refrigeration. I want to become the best service technician that I can.”

Both Harding and Cherkowski are thrilled to be part of WorldSkills Team Canada 2024. “In high school, my teachers really pushed me to try the skills competitions. I was ecstatic when I learned I’d be competing at WorldSkills Lyon 2024. I never thought that going into this job I’d compete in France and represent WorldSkills Team Canada 2024. What a once-in-a-lifetime experience!” says Cherkowski. Adds Harding: “I got interested in skills competitions after seeing my brother compete when I was eight years old. It’s an experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything else. When I learned I’ll be competing at WorldSkills Lyon 2024, for about a week it felt like a dream. I still can’t believe it.”

Tyler Cherkowski will compete in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning category.

During the four-day WorldSkills Lyon 2024 event the team will compete against 1,500 participants from more than 60 member countries and regions for the title of world champion in their trade or technology. The theme of the event is Where there is a skill there is a way.
