Planners recommend approval of Wegmans’ distribution center By Jim Ridolphi for The Mechanicsville Local HANOVER -- Following a four-hour meeting that included more than 20 speakers who voiced opposition to the project’s location and scope, the Hanover Planning Commission voted unanimously to accept staff ’s position and recommended approval of proffer amendments submitted by Wegmans regarding a warehouse distribution center located just east of the Hanover Airport off Sliding Hill Road. Commission chair and Ashland commissioner Alan Abbott made the motion that included other proffer recommendations that included operational standards that ensure Wegmans’ trucks will use the Sliding Hill entrance when approaching from Interstate 95, no tandem trail-

Democratic Presidential Primary ballot lengthy, but many have dropped out By Melody Kinser Managing Editor
Sample ballot on page 11.
HANOVER – Tuesday, March 3, will be the Democrats’ day in Hanover County when that party conducts a Presidential Primary. Despite 14 names on the ballot, Teresa F. “Teri” Smithson, Director of Elections/General Registrar, noted last week that “a lot of names of candidates that have stopped running. The reason they are still shown on the ballot is that they
have not submitted their official withdrawal from the race.” As usual, precincts will open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Names appearing on Hanover County’s Democratic Presidential Primary ballot are: Cory Booker, Julian Castro, Bernie Sander, Elizabeth Warren, Marianne Williamson, Michael Bennet,
Joseph R. Biden, Amy Klobuchar, Tulsia Gabbard, Deval Patrick. Pete Buttigieg, Andrew Yang, Tom Steyer, and Michael R. Bloomberg. Dan McGraw, who recently was elected chair of the Hanover Democratic Committee, said, “I am hearing much enthusiasm for the Democratic Presidential Primary from our Democratic Committee members, many independents, and several moderate Republicans. The issues of concern are that our national debt
is increasing at an alarming rate, we are witnessing significant breaches of Constitutional norms, and a number of people feel that the nation has become too divisive.” “We need a leader who can bring us together. I am seeing support for a wide range of candidates within our committee,” he continued. “And, I am confident that once the business of selecting the candidate to represent the party see PRIMARY, pg. 11

Old Dominion Honor Flight seeks veterans for trip to D.C. Contributed Report news@mechlocal.com WILLIAMSBURG -- Old Dominion Honor Flight (ODHF) is seeking World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans for a trip to Washington, D.C., on April 25 to visit the memorials dedicated to honor their sacrifice and service. The trip is free for veterans. Veterans who served from Dec. 7, 1941, to April 30, 1975, who have not been on an Honor Flight trip may apply to be part of ODHF Mission 2. Because space is limited, priority is given to World War II veterans and those who are terminally ill (must be verified by a doctor). ODHF also is seeking guardians, who serve as personal escorts for each veteran and ensure that their day is truly memorable. There is mandatory training and a $125 fee to serve as a guardian.
To request an application, send an e-mail to OldDominionHF@gmail.com ODHF serves veterans from Elizabeth City, North Carolina, up through Hampton Roads and Richmond to Fredericksburg, Virginia (including the Eastern Shore) and west to Farmville, Virginia. ODHF Mission 2 will depart from both the Embassy Suites-Hampton Convention Center in Hampton and American Legion Post 175 in Mechanicsville. In addition to the World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War Memorials, ODHF Mission 2 also will visit the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico, the Air Force Memorial in Arlington, and Arlington National Cemetery. “A trip to Washington, D.C., with Old Dominion Honor Flight is an all-day, immersive see VETERANS, pg. 4

Hidden in Plain Sight to be held tomorrow ROCKVILLE -- Hidden in Plain Sight, a free community event presented by Teens Care Too, Hanover Cares, Hanover County Public Schools, Hanover Sheriff's Office, and Hanover Community Services, will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Berea Baptist Church at 15475 Ashland Rd. in Rockville. The purpose of the program is to help educate parents on possible signs of drug and alcohol use by teens. A replica of a teenager’s bedroom will be on display for participants to browse and observe, becoming familiar with
where and how teens might hide drugs or paraphernalia. Seemingly innocent items commonly used by youth could actually indicate a substance abuse problem. Would you be able to recognize signs of substance use and effectively intervene? Do you know what a lottery ticket is used for, or what about a mason jar or a dryer sheet? Don’t know the answer to these questions? Then this event is for you. It will allow you to be more knowledgeable and proactive in helping a young person who might be using drugs, but also prevent
youth from even starting. Because of the sensitive nature of Hidden in Plain Sight, it is not recommended for children. There is no cost to attend the event, however pre-registration is required. To register, visit https://tinyurl.com/ HIPS0227 to register. For questions or more information, contact Octavia Marsh, executive director of Hanover Cares at 804-564-6119 or info@hanover-cares.org. HCPS has notification system in place By Melody Kinser Managing Editor f a parent or guardian needs information about their child that is a student in Hanover County Public Schools, a system is and has been in place for some time to share information as soon as possible. Who hasn’t enjoyed the comedic phone calls from Chris R. Whitley, HCPS public information officer, announcing the status of schools during inclement weather? But, that’s not all he does in his position. Unfortunately, during times of crisis, Whitley also is the go-to guy for information on what’s taking place in your child’s school. On Thursday, Feb. 13, a trespasser was arrested inside Lee-Davis High School. An email about the incident was released by Sgt. Steve DiLoreto, public information officer for the Hanover
I
County Sheriff ’s Office at 8:41 p.m. The article was posted at 9:54 p.m. on our social media sites. Reaction was immediate, with many questioning why they had not been notified. Well, at the first of a school year, parents and guardians are reminded of the parent portal -- located at https://hanover.bbcportal.com/ -which provides news like what occurred on the 13th, as well as scheduled events like plays and concerts. I’m no techie, but the log-in/registration process is simple. Shame on me, because I hadn’t signed up at the start of the 2019-2020 school year. Whitley was helpful and now I’m good to go. We want to share as much school news as possible with our readers. A school is often considered the heart of a community.
Back to Feb. 13. Principal Charles Stevens had emailed “Families, Faculty, and Staff ” “to make you are of a safety concern that occurred today.” He explained the incident and how it was handled, pointing out that “This individual was calm, cooperative, and did not make any threats.” Stevens said an “alert staff member noticed a possible unauthorized visitor and immediately reported the concern to L-DHS administration.” A student had opened a locked door to allow the young man into the building. Please tell your children that they have a responsibility to keep their schools safe too. Anyway, Stevens had released a lengthy email informing parents and guardians. We encourage you to register for the parent portal and keep an eye out for what may be happening in your child’s school. We’ll all agree that their safety is the priority.
Wacky words can work wonders on the world By Laura McFarland Richmond Suburban News It’s time to flex my nerd muscles again. I have talked in the past about many of the reasons I am a nerd and the fact that I own all of them. One of my favorites is my love of the idiosyncrasies of the English language and
how absolutely discombobulating it can be at times. Last week, I was minding my own business scrolling Facebook when I came across a great post about “some of the best words literally ever.” I didn’t want to be persnickety by questioning the poppycock that would invoke such over-exaggerated phrasing and risk causing a kerfuffle. I will instead

Trump should be remembered for successes In 2016, I was slow to jump aboard the Donald Trump train. Marco Rubio was my candidate for that primary. I always was going to vote for the Republican nominee, especially with the Antonin Scalia vacancy. It wasn’t until Trump chose Indiana Governor Mike Pence as his running mate that I decided to also campaign for him. My heart really got in the Trump campaign when Hillary Clinton called Trump supporters “deplorable”. I admit to being incorrigible. In the first months of his presidency, there were some cringeworthy moments. It took a year for President Trump to start rolling up victories (federal judicial appointments, tax cuts, regulatory reform) but once he got started America got stronger at home and abroad. In spite of all this, there are some that selfishly put their feelings about President Trump’s personality ahead of his accomplishments for the country. This is not a vote on who we are inviting over next Thanksgiving. Even if this new economy does not help everybody, should we go back to the bad old days where 1% growth rates were dismissed as the new normal? Should we go back to fighting like a schoolyard bully for the right to project weakness on the world stage? Should “Uncle Sam” go back to being “Uncle Sucker” on trade deals? It is one thing for true-believing liberals to disagree with Republican philosophy. However, for those who believe we’re better off now than four years ago, but still want to vote based on hurt feelings, I have to say I’m sorry, but your feelings aren’t hiring. a bike/pedestrian walkway along Sliding Hill and Ashcake Roads. “My goal is to get this into the decision-makers hands,” Abbott said, making his motion to recommend approval. “They will have more time to deal with it. If we defer it, it cuts their time.” The recommendation followed a public hearing that featured a long list of speakers, almost all of them objecting to the project and citing a myriad of concerns regarding the project. Prior to the public hearing, Andy Condlin, an attorney representing Wegmans, provided a brief overview of Wegmans’ plans and noted distinctions of the new proffers versus the 1995 version. Subject to the original proffers, a 2.2 million-squarefoot facility is allowed while Wegmans is proposing a 1.6 million-square-foot facility at

build-out. He also addressed a major sticking point for area residents, namely the increase in traffic, and said, while the 1995 zoning would allow up to 19,000 vehicles a day, initial traffic studies indicated Wegmans will only generator an increase of about 3,100, or 275 trips at peak hours, including 20 to 40 additional trucks. “This site was chosen because of its proximity to existing and planned new stores; and because of its proximity to I-95, its size and the availability of workforce in Hanover County,” Condlin said. “I think it’s important to point out that we are not asking for a rezoning — the property is already zoned M-2. This exact facility could go on this property today without a single change in any of the proffers. However, it is appropriate to consider an adjustment of the proffers if we can make the site function better and more efficiently . . . if, at the same time, we have additional protections
to make it better for the county, and better for the surrounding residents,” Condlin said. Most speakers during the public hearing did not see it that way. “We moved to Hanover County several years ago for the rural character of the area, the peace and quiet, and dark night skies and views across our farm,” said Kathy Woodcock who lives on Ashcake Road across from the proposed project. “We have many concerns about the Wegmans’ project, which threatens to destroy the reason we came here and so many others have chosen to live here,” she continued. Woodcock said the proposed 50-foot buffer on Ashcake Road would not adequately shield her neighborhood from noise. “We propose a 150-foot buffer, a concrete wall or a berm,” Woodcock said. Weedon Cloe also described the buffers as “insufficient.”

Chris French addressed archaeological concerns, including the possibility of unmarked graves on the property, as well as other historic resources. While three surveys have been completed, French said those queries were not designed to detect human remains and more extensive examination is required. Fox Head resident Anita Philp expressed concerns regarding well water in the area and the possibility of pollution from the developed site among other concerns. She encouraged officials to maintain the 1995 proffers. “The 1995 proffers were put in place to keep this property from becoming what Wegmans would like to do: turning it to a crazy trucks in/ trucks out 365 day . . . .operation,” Philp said. Deacon Kenneth Spurlock of the Brown Grove Baptist Church asked the concerns of his community be heard. Noting the numerous accidents that ended near or in his
church lot, he cautioned the hazards of Ashcake Road and its rural nature. “It’s a road that is very dangerous,” Spurlock said. “We ask that Wegmans seriously consider the concerns that we have and this community behind me this evening.” Other speakers voiced concerns about the large number of children in the affected areas, the effects of passing trucks in front of Pearson’s Corner Elementary School, and how increased traffic could affect the community interconnectivity of the surrounding neighborhoods. Wegmans has maintained trucks will only be able to enter the facility via the Sliding Hill Road entrance. Chickahominy commissioner Steven Hadra addressed that issue and others as he voiced a list of questions regarding the project. “Is it reasonable to ask the applicant to require drivers to use the I-95 Sliding Hill exit and Sliding Hill Entrance
every single time?” Hadra asked. “Do those drivers know they must go up Sliding Hill?” Chairman Abbott voiced questions regarding increased buffers, the possibility of prohibiting through truck traffic on some of the roads that could be used by drivers headed to the facility, the adequacy of the right and turn lanes to accommodate possible backups, and if Wegmans could provide a community hotline that community members could access. “I know people don’t believe this, but they really are looking to be a good neighbor,” Condlin said. “They want to accommodate where they can. Forget the proffers, forget everything else, what can we do to make this a better situation for everybody. They really believe that they can be a good neighbor. People won’t even know that they are there.” Wegmans has proffered a $500,000 payment for road improvements that could see WEGMANS, pg. 9

HANOVER COUNTY, VIRGINIA NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING AND PROPOSED REAL PROPERTY TAX INCREASE The County of Hanover, Virginia proposes to increase real property tax levies. 1. Assessment Increase: Total assessed value of real property, excluding additional assessments due to new construction or improvements to property, exceeds last year’s total assessed value of real property by 3.0 percent. 2. Lowered Rate Necessary to Offset Increased Assessment: The tax rate which would levy the same amount of real estate tax as last year, when multiplied by the new total assessed value of real estate with the exclusions mentioned above, would be $0.78 per $100 of assessed value. This rate will be known as the “lowered tax rate.” 3. Effective Rate Increase: The County of Hanover proposes to adopt a tax rate of $0.81 per $100 of assessed value. This is the same as the 2019 tax rate. The difference between the lowered tax rate and the proposed rate would be $0.03 per $100, or 3.0 percent. This difference will be known as the “effective tax rate increase.” Individual property taxes may, however, increase at a percentage greater than or less than the above percentage. 4. Proposed Total Budget Increase: Based on the proposed real property tax rate and changes in other revenues, the total budget of the County of Hanover will increase 1.4% from that of last year. The General Fund budget is increasing by 3.7% from the fiscal year 2020 budget. A Public Hearing on the increase and the proposed tax rate listed above will be held on Wednesday, April 1, 2020, at 7:15 p.m. in the Board Room of the Hanover County Administration Building, 7516 County Complex Road, Hanover, Virginia. Persons wishing to comment on the proposals described in this notice may appear at the stated time and place to present oral testimony within such reasonable time limits as shall be determined by the Board of Supervisors. Related information is available for public inspection any regular working day between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. in the Office of the County Administrator, 7516 County Complex Road, Hanover, Virginia, phone number (804) 365-6005. probably around kindergarten age – it was my preferred way to spend my time. I shared a room with my two older sisters, so I was used to noise. But if all of that sister brouhaha got to be too much, I would escape to a hallway to read with the gerbils we owned (this is something I actually heard from my mom and do not remember) or head to the couch in the living room if the doohickey wasn’t on too loud. It helped that I had a number of people in my immediate family who loved reading those whatchamacallits as much as I did. Mom read us stories and Bible stories every night, and my maternal grandmother was a voracious reader. Mom said I would come home from the school library with plenty of whatnots to devour, and she kept a steady supply at home as well as visiting the public library, so there was never a lack of choice. But if we are talking about language and how it makes us
LETTERS Continued from pg. 6
Letter rebutted about support of the President In Eric French’s Mechanicsville Local Feb. 19 rebuttal to my letter (dated Feb. 5, 2020) he began with “my letter’s four columns of dislike of [Donald] Trump.” This particular “ploy” is usually one of the first used in the bag-of-tricks of y’all “Trumpologists” where you use in defense of the indefensible. And, by the way, it usually takes about “four or more columns” of information offered to make points against the most prolific liar in human history.
feel, I wouldn’t just talk about books. My family could be colorful at times, so that meant I grew up with a variety of influences on my language skills. Either because of impatience or genuine forgetfulness (or maybe replacing a lifetime of cuss words after he became a Christian), my grandfather would constantly point at things and tell you to bring him the whatsit. And if you did not know immediately which object he was referencing, he would become flabbergasted and look at you like you were a dingleberry. Then there was the simple pleasure of growing up in Texas and all the color that brings to your vocabulary. If you broke something, Mom wasn’t livid, she was madder than a wet hen and likely to have a conniption fit. Added to that, my maternal grandmother grew up in Missouri near the Ozarks, and the colloquialisms she introduced to the family were their own brand of special. I honestly couldn’t think of any that I felt were suitable to share
here, but, just know, they were absurd and usually mildly inappropriate. If you have made it this far and enjoyed the gobbledygook that peppered the above, thank you for your forbearance. I don’t want people to feel bamboozled if a cattywampus word they are particular to wasn’t used in this column, which is really just a load of codswallop. But if you have enjoyed this malarkey today, think about working a few of these words into your vocabulary in the coming days and see if you don’t bring a smile to someone’s face, too. Just a warning: it won’t be easy. Why just to use all of the words in that Facebook post, I found myself coming up with an absurd scenario involving a hypothetical German grandmother who liked to keep us on tenterhooks waiting for the pumpernickel baking in the oven while she canoodled on the couch with her beau. Now if you will excuse me, I think it’s time for me to skedaddle. Laura McFarland is editor of Powhatan Today.
Again, I knew nothing of Trump save for “reality show host” and defunct “developer” until he insulted Lt. Cmdr. F4 fighter pilot John McCain, United States Navy USN (ret.) early on in the 2015-2016 national campaign season. I’ll use “irony” to explain my distain for a felon whose already begun his practicing for emperor. It was “painfully” ironic when I realized (after those visceral insults against the most well-known hero of Vietnam) that Trump “illegally” avoided the draft five times for the same conflict McCain was a hero of. The insulting of the hero by the coward was/is/ always will be the very epitome of “irony.” Then, of course, he was “vindicated” in the Senate by
Mitch McConnell’s continued obstruction (which ironically began with the Caucus Room luncheon just after the 44th administration’s inaugural (in 2009 then followed by the Republicans’ communal “dislike” of Barack Obama). At least Mitch is consistent. The “letters-before-myname” comment about me are a result of 30 years of parttime schooling usually as I was working blue collar jobs in industry, construction, and engineering. In fact, for what it’s worth, the PhD may as well stand for “post hole digger.” So do yourself a favor and realize I don’t take your reference as an insult. What I do get angry with is the continued apologies made see LETTERS, pg. 13

include a signal light or road improvements on Sliding Hill Road. Although the request involved changes to specific proffers, the height of the light poles in the parking lot and fencing, Condlin told commission members he was aware of other concerns expressed at the meeting. “We have 30 days before the [Hanover County] Board of Supervisors,” Condlin said. “We are willing to work with you. These are things we can work on for the 30 days.” Mechanicsville commissioner Randy Whittaker pointed out a possible benefit of the new distribution center and the potential impact on local growers. He noted that one major producer in the county currently sells to Wegmans, but is limited by the distance to the current warehouse facilities. He said the new distribution center would open opportunities for local producers to sell their products to Wegmans. “A lot of farmers are hoping that if Wegmans comes here, they will get do a lot of business with them in this county. I think that’s a little piece of the puzzle we are missing,” Whittaker said. The application now proceeds to the board of supervisors for its consideration in March.

KATHRYN E. MONFALCONE ALS association, and leading others by serving as student president of W&M’s Circle K International chapter. When Monfalcone discovered that there was not a service outlet for middle school students in the Williamsburg community,
she stepped forward. In collaboration with W&M’s Circle K International advisor and the Kiwanis Club of Williamsburg, Monfalcone acquired sponsorship and funding to establish a service-learning program at Berkeley Middle School. Monfalcone said, “It was incredible to watch the two dozen middle school students excitedly plan their upcoming year’s activities as they brainstormed ways to reduce their carbon footprint, bring an end to bullying and give back to first responders.” After graduation in May 2020, Monfalcone intends to pursue a career as an elementary school teacher in the Richmond area. She is the daughter of Mike and Mary Monfalcone of Mechanicsville.

by folks on behalf of this criminal (five decades of proven felonious activities) when all his shenanigans are so obvious. Why? I began my research on Trump because he insulted a military veteran. Which reminds me that your “whatdid-you-do-about-Cheneywhen-you-found-out” comment is a clear indication that you’ve (most likely) never served. You don’t raise your hand within an active duty cadre and question the authority of anyone several levels up from your pay grade. You utilize tact, discretion and be very careful (and if anyone in a uniform is “indignant,” woe be unto their backside). We live in a democracy. The military is totalitarian (another “misnomer” unless you’ve served). My “indignation” is reserved for my First Amendment rights as a civilian. Obama’s “dismal failure” (his entire eight-year tenure) was preyed upon by McConnell’s continued obstruction. Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland’s not-even-gettinginterviewed by McConnell’s Republicans (again, I was a Republican for 30 years remember) for Obama’s Supreme Court of the United States was the best tangible example I can offer. I pray United States Marine Corps Maj. Amy McGrath (and another fighter pilot) ends Mitch’s treasonous and pathetic tenure at the same time the proverbial commode is flushed with the “wanna-be emperor” this November. Then ... smack dab in the middle of your letter, you utter, “along-comes-Trump.” Geeesh ,man! “Among comes Trump.” Are you kidding? By the way, did you know
trough” costs you and I $40 billion in war profits as-wellas-4,400 of my brother/sister compatriots. I could think of many, many adjectives for this but “minuscule” seems largely inaccurate at the very least. Megan Kelly, Steve Schmitt, Mike Wallace and many other Republican news anchors are now realizing the depths of Trump’s dangers. Everyone (ev-er-y-one) who ever crosses Trump is wrong, criminal, bad, mean, evil, nasty, awful, etc., but Trump is always right snd innocent and a victim. Can you (possibly) see a pattern? Irony and patterns. Tell ya what: I’ve posted in here (quite regularly) since I realized what McConnell’s henchmen were doing to our 44th President of the United States about 11 years ago. So, instead of further wasting my time on you, I’ll just suggest (since you’ve said you’re an “avid reader”) that you pick up a copy of an Old Testament and read the entire second chapter of Daniel. Pay strict attention to verses 40-43. Then, see if you see anything familiar. As well, get a copy of “The Brainwashing of my Dad” (Mathew Modine). Available from Amazon. Great reading. that after Trump was discontinued from NBC’s “The Apprentice” and he (allegedly) said, “Now what am I gonna do” to one of his sons who suggested (jokingly) “why-don’tyou-run-for-President.” “Along comes Trump” ... Bwahahaha! The master of deception; the “artist-of-the-deal” (actually written by a gentleman named Tony Schwartz ... [who incidentally says Trump is dangerous]). Said by (Meagan Kelly, former Fox News anchor) as “a danger to everything held dear in our democracy.” “Then you write, “more American patriots are supporting him.” Do you know what “patriot” really means? It’s a general term. To me, it means “adherence to the Constitution/ Declaration of Independence where all (“men”) are created equal.” Where the oath of office “.... swear allegiance to the constitution... to protect the same from all enemies foreign (and domestic)” is taken to heart (as in uniform). Trump has no allegiance to anyone but himself. This is evident when (especially when) he uses insults against the likes of Lt. Col. Alex Vindman for telling the truth about (more) Trump crimes. Then (if you need more tangible proof) this is more evident when Trump “fires” (a circus freak term from Trump’s reality show), Vindman has him escorted off the White House grounds (and his twin brother who had nothing to do with any of it). Then, when you wrote, “Did he get involved in politics to endure constant abuse?”, were you referring to Trump or his predecessor? Then your “He’s already independently wealthy” has me convinced I could very easily sell you that proverbial Brooklyn Bridge. Dick Cheney’s “dip into the

Astronomers aren’t all big fans of Daylight Saving Time By Dr. George Spagna Special to The Mechanicsville Local Note: Public viewing at the Keeble Observatory at Randolph-Macon College will continue in March, April, and May. We will open, weather permitting, on Tuesday evenings, 7:30 to 10 p.m. Note: this is a change in time to accommodate the switch to Daylight Saving Time and later sunsets. We will adjust starting time in April and May as well. Watch the website (https://www.rmc.edu/keeble) for updates. Or, call the Keeble Information line at 804-7523210. Be warned. I’m about to tell you why astronomers (at least this one) don’t like Daylight Saving Time, which starts on March 8. Yes, the annual “set your clocks ahead one hour when you go to bed on Saturday” is upon us. You can easily find a history of Daylight Saving Time on Wikipedia, so I won’t bore you with the details. I do note that while the idea is credited to Ben Franklin, it seems now to have been a joke – he suggested in Poor Richard’s Almanac that the good people of Paris could

save on candles if they got up later in the morning, after the sun had risen. During the First World War, Germany adopted Daylight Saving Time to supposedly save fuel. Much of Europe apparently followed suit. In the 1960s, a federal law required states to adopt Daylight Saving Time unless they specifically opted out. One intent was to avoid disruptions in interstate commerce with different states on different times. However, I note that the boundary between Central and Mountain Time Zones cuts through parts of North and South Dakota, Nebraska, and a tiny piece of west Texas. I recall the debate in the South Dakota legislature when I was in high school, with some using the (silly) argument that Daylight Saving Time would confuse the cows and chickens. In
any case, we now have Daylight Saving Time for much of the U.S. from March to November and then revert to Eastern Standard Time for the winter. Why don’t I like it? First, it disrupts my sleep schedule! And judging from comments from friends and colleagues, I’m not the only one. Second, switching to Daylight Saving Time is supposed to save energy, yet there are multiple studies Metro Creative Connection showing that it doesn’t. Consumption of electricity and fuel oil remains fairly constant. There also are studies suggesting an increase in early morning accidents and, most troubling, an increase in injuries and fatalities among school students waiting for the morning bus. Third, astronomers record data and
exchange information based on two time measures. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) was once known as Greenwich Mean Time. It counts in seconds based on atomic clocks with 86,400 seconds per day and also is the basis for all civil time keeping. If you’re simply counting, you don’t have the luxury of randomly adding or subtracting the 3,600 seconds in an hour. We also keep track of “Julian days” – counting days and fractions of days from noon (UTC) on 1 January 4713 BCE on the Julian calendar, with noon to noon on that day designated Julian Day 0. For example, as I write this the Julian Day Number is 2,458,899.5. In the Modified Julian Day system (counting from 17 November 1858) it’s 58,899. Again, no “spring forward” or “fall back” allowed. I still don’t like disrupting my sleep! Lunar phases for March: First Quarter on the 2nd, at 2:57 p.m., EST; Full Moon on the 9th, at 1:48 p.m.; Last Quarter on the 16th, at 5:34 a.m.; New Moon on the 24th, at 5:28 a.m. All times are Eastern Daylight except as noted for the 2nd. see ASTRONOMERS, pg. 17

Raider wrestlers prevail in Hanover quad By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local
ATLEE LITTLE LEAGUE 2020 Baseball & Softball Registration
Walk-In Registration Friday, Jan. 31, 4-8 pm at Cool Spring Rec Center 9283 Atlee Station Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116
Dave Lawrence/The Local
Top, the referee keeps watch for a pin as Atlee’s Evan Buchanan in his win over Lee-Davis’ Jake Owens in a 138-pound match in the Hanover County Quad Wednesday. Bottom, Lee-Davis heavyweight Andy Aldridge (right) stalks his prey, Atlee’s Noah Jones. Both Buchanan and Aldridge won their matches.
Five Hawks earned pins The Confederates pulled off vicincluding Halsey, who was 2-1 tories in the final four matches on the evening, losing to three- of their dual with Hanover, all time defending state champion Andy Aldridge at 220 pounds. see WRESTLERS, pg. 25
All players aged 4-16 are welcome!
We urge all new players to register in person. Challenger League Baseball gives mentally and physically challenged boys and girls an opportunity to play baseball within an organized structure.
A birth certificate and proof of address are required for any player who has not previously participated in Atlee Little League.
1052162-01
MECHANICSVILLE – Match after match, cheer after cheer, it became increasingly clear Wednesday night at the annual county wrestling quad that Atlee wrestling is for real. The Raiders completed a sweep of their county brethren, defeating Lee-Davis 48-30, Hanover 46-31, and Patrick Henry 51-18. “We were a little banged up. This time in the season can be rough,” said Atlee head coach Gabe Lavey, who had three starters unavailable for the meet. “But we had kids to step up. Ryan Blostac stepped up, got two victories.” For Blostac, it’s his first varsity season. The ability to create such depth is, many times in wrestling, the difference between being able to make a deep postseason run, and not. Atlee’s dual with Hanover started well, but wins for Jack Epperly, Christopher Halsey, Simon Siler and Sean Klump gave Hanover a 31-12 lead. But the Raiders won the final six matches, led by pins from James Haynie, Evan Buchanan and Alex Frowert that sent the Raiders surging ahead for the victory. The Hawks went 1-2 on the night, defeating Patrick Henry 51-26 while falling to host LeeDavis 46-32. Head coach Jason Smith, while hoping to earn victories, is looking at the bigger picture. “It’s an exciting rivalry. It hurts a little bit coming up short to Lee-Davis and to Atlee,” Smith explained. “Wrestling is a difficult sport. It takes a while to get the hang of it. We’re constantly working to get better, and we’re moving in the right direction. Come regional tournament, I think we’ll be okay.”

Hall of Fame inductees surprised by honor By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – Many times, those who are most deserving of honor are the last to realize it. The overwhelming response to being honored with an induction into the 2020 Class of the Lee-Davis Athletic Hall of Fame was surprise. “Astonished.” “Are you kidding me?” But it was all true, as five graduates, representing five different decades, returned to the place of their academic and athletic glory on Friday night to be honored at a banquet filled with previous inductees, family, friends, great Italian food, and, most importantly, great memories. For current Lee-Davis teacher and head baseball coach Tyler Johnson, it wasn’t as much a return as it was a night off. “Usually, I do security at basketball games. I had to pull some strings with the principal to let me off the hook,” Johnson said with a smile. The 2005 graduate is the all-time leading scorer in LeeDave Lawrence/The Local Davis basketball history with From left, Kara Malloy Gallaher, Brad King, Tyler Johnson, Gerome Lewis and Kelly Heinz Frazier were inducted into the Lee-Davis Athletic Hall of Fame in a 1,390 points, holding school ceremony at the school Friday. The Class of 2020 brings the total number of inductees to 35.

records for free throws in a career, in a season, and a game. His jersey number, 22, was retired by the school. “Fifteen years ago? That’s crazy,” Johnson noted, asked about his biggest takeaway from his days as a student. “There was a sense of community, a sense of pride that everybody had playing for Lee-Davis. It was unbelievable for me to come through here.” For Charles “Brad” King, it was a return to a school totally different in scope from his playing days in the early 1960s. King, a three-sport athlete, let-
tered three years in football and baseball, was an All-Region football player, and later played at what was then Ferrum Junior College, where he was a part of their 1965 NJCAA national title team. “It was different. I went to Washington-Henry, and a lot of other people that I played ball with went to Battlefield,” King said, recalling a time when LeeDavis was still a new school, consolidating the student populations of other institutions. “When we merged, we had to see HALL, pg. 23

get to know a lot of new people. All of a sudden, you’ve got to learn the mannerisms of other people, that’s tough.” King was glad to know new people, one in particular. “If it wasn’t for Lee-Davis, I would have never met my wife,” King said, as Vicki went to Battlefield prior to the opening of Lee-Davis in 1959.
Kara Malloy Gallaher’s glory came, many times, all alone, running the race set before her. She won the Central Region championship in cross country in 1986, and three years later, was the Central Region champion in the 1000-meter run in indoor track. She amassed nine region titles overall, but, perhaps, her biggest contribution to Lee-Davis was blazing a new trail. “When I got to the first practice for cross country in
August, I waited around for the team, waited, and then I realized, there weren’t enough girls to field a team,” Gallaher remembered. “Now, I look at the team, and it’s so amazing.” Gallaher ran with the boys. Gerome Lewis was a man among boys. The 1972 graduate earned All-Region and AllMetro honors in football, and also left his mark on the track. Lewis, a veteran of the United States Navy, held the Lee-Davis record for the 400-meter run
for an incredible 44 years. “When I started playing football, I did not know what a football was,” Lewis recalled, earning a laugh from the audience. “My sister Vanessa told me, the football is the long one that looks like a foot!” Today, Lewis makes his mark as “G-Rome”, as he is called by his 6-year old grandson, who was in attendance. Kelly Heinz Frazier is the youngest inductee in the Hall of Fame’s history. From the
Class of 2012, Frazier’s work in the softball circle was legendary. One of the best pitchers to ever play in the Richmond area, she helped Lee-Davis make back-to-back Group AAA state championship games in 2010 and 2011, winning the title in their second attempt. Today, Frazier takes the lessons she learned on the softball team, and applies them in a different way, as a consultant with the government. Whether training or developing, Frazier

remembers the lessons learned back in Mechanicsville. “Consulting is very much like a team sport in that every day is a new challenge. It’s never the same,” Frazier said. “The education I received at LeeDavis, many teachers forced us to think above what our classes were. They taught you how to think.” The Hall of Fame now numbers 35 inductees. Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

Patriots get much-needed wins at Lee-Davis By Rob Witham For the Mechanicsville Local MECHANICSVILLE – When you have to wait for a lot of your basketball team to finish playing football, it creates one small issue. Patrick Henry boys basketball had to push back a couple of early games on their schedule while the football team made a run to the Virginia High School League Class 4 state semifinal. Now, with the homestretch of the basketball regular season in sight, the Patriots began a stretch of six games in eight nights Friday in victorious fashion, defeating Lee-Davis 72-48 to sweep the season series from their oldest rival. Just over 12 hours later, the Patriots outlasted Thomas Jefferson 67-66 at the Monacan Winter Basketball Classic to even their record at 6-6. Jayden Mines repeated a 14-point performance from Friday’s win in Saturday’s triumph, while Tysen Brown registered a double-double logging 19 points and 14 rebounds. “You know never how teenagers are going to respond to adversity,” said Patrick Henry head boys basketball coach Randy Anderson, as the LeeDavis victory snapped a fourgame losing streak. “They were four tough losses, and I told them you’ve got to keep going. If you want to make a playoff appearance, every game has to mean something.” Lee-Davis (2-12) held steady with the Patriots early, but Patrick Henry extended a small first quarter lead into double digits in a second period where they held the Confederates to just 9 points. Mines began the second half with a quick 3-pointer to up the score to 39-21, and Lee-Davis never seriously threatened again. It was widely known that

Foley takes a long-term approach, and, despite the record, sees improvement, both now, and in the future. “Every day we come in, everyone is positive, and we keep working hard,” Foley said.
“Already we’re able to see when breaking down film, and seeing the stat sheets, we’re seeing the improvement. More rebounds, less turnovers, better free throw shooting. The little improvements that maybe the average
fan who doesn’t have access to all the numbers might not see, but we’re seeing it.” Kwadell McQueen and freshman Jordan Callahan led Lee-Davis with 12 points each. Mines was one of three Patriots
in double figures, joined by Aaron Brown and Jordan Morris, who each had 13 points. In the girls varsity matchup, Patrick Henry earned its 10th see PATRIOTS, pg. 25

Megan Mann brought Lee-Davis a championship, with a stunning 44 foot, 5.25inch hurl in the shot put. The Confederates had their share of top-five finishes as well. “Alli Crytser – one of the best runners in the country as a freshman, one of the best freshmen in the nation – ran a school record mile and 1,600[meter] on the way to the mile,”
said Hanover head coach Rich Firth. “She won the race going away and continues to win big races against top competition. She’s just something really, really special.” Firth has also been pleased with Joiner’s progress. “She ran just off her PR, a couple of tenths [of a second] off what she ran at states last year,” he said. “She’s well ahead
of schedule with states over a month away.” Lee-Davis head coach Neil Mathews said Mann was ready for a big throw in the shot. “She had a great series of throws throughout. I think the shortest she threw was 41-10 or something like that,” he said. “She seems to do quite well in the spotlight.”

comeback. “We’ve got a really young team. Overall, I was pleased, and a little bit surprised by some of our younger guys stepping up and getting wins.” Owens and Sulser are sophomores, while Mesco and Sadler are juniors. For Lee-Davis as a whole, come postseason, it will be a new experience as they are now in Class 4 rather than Class 5. “It’s a new scene, and we don’t know,” Tinsley noted.
“We’ve seen some 4B teams during the year, but we’ve never wrestled in the postseason against them.” For Patrick Henry, the night was an expected measuring stick for head coach Jeremy Smith, a 2005 Lee-Davis graduate, looking to lead the Patriots to some of the heights experienced by their rivals. “When we came out, we were a little bit flat, but I was impressed in how we did in the

jump start. “We’ve been playing a lot more zone lately and I feel like we’re getting really comfortable with it. We’re doing a great job communicating so we’re not over helping and we don’t have two guys going to the basketball,” Atlee head coach Rally Axselle said. “Luckily, they missed some shots. I thought part of it was our defense and some of them they just missed.” Warren, Atlee’s senior forward, carried the Raiders offensively in the first half and helped get the team energized. He scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the first half, including a pair of alley-oop dunks off assists from Nicholas Conway and Ralph Axselle. The Raiders led 30-8 at the halftime break. “Tyler [Warren] carried us in the first part and everybody fed off him and got some confidence going,” coach Axselle said. “[His teammates] know
they can count on him. They know every night he’s going to bring it.” Hanover rallied in the second half behind Jack Belcastro, who scored 9 of his team-high 14 points in the third quarter. The Hawks cut the Raiders’ lead to 15 by the end of the third quarter and got as close as 13 in the fourth. Ultimately, however, Atlee proved to be too strong defensively to overcome. The Raiders decidedly won the rebounding battle, which helped keep the home team from getting any closer. Warren secured 12 rebounds for Atlee, which got strong performances on the boards from Ryan Kochon and Kemondre Claiborne as well. Conway added seven assists and two steals and William Sutkus had 10 points for Atlee in the victory. Jonathan Howard can be reached at sports@mechlocal. com.

Friends of Hanover Dog Parks celebrates 8th anniversary Friends of Hanover Dog Parks (FOHDP) is celebrating its eighth anniversary this year. “Some pretty amazing things have happened because of the hard work and generous donations of so many supporters. And more will happen, but not without your participation,” Caroline Cooke said. “A non-profit organization such as ours depends on the willingness of individuals to take a bit of time to serve on its Board of Directors, a volunteer group. The time commitment would be a minimum of two to four hours each month: first, to come to meetings; then to follow-up on tasks that you may have signed up for. These could be to help with membership, fundraising, education, outreach, publicity, or planning and development,” she said. The Mission and Purpose follows: “The mission of the Friends is to enrich the quality of life in Hanover County through the establishment of recreational areas where dogs and people can interact in a safe, clean and pleasant environment. “The purpose of the Friends is to promote the health and welfare of companion animals and their owners through education and recreation. In cooperation with Hanover County -- to plan, promote, establish, operate, maintain, and regulate -- we will work to create and support public off-leash dog parks. We view the dog parks as community projects -- in partnership with the County, local businesses and civic organizations -- that satisfy the needs of dog owners and non-dog owners alike.” For more information, email friendsofhdp@ gmail.com or call Caroline Cooke at 804-513-1744.
