County cuts ribbon on 300 years of history New Museum opened, 300th birthday celebrated By Jim Ridolphi The Mechanicsville Local

T

welve months ago the green behind the old courthouse sat empty as a previously planned date set to celebrate Hanover County’s 300th birthday passed quietly, another victim of the COVID pandemic. A year later, those same grounds reawakened with enthusiastic visitors, historical displays, live music and other activities as the county made

up for lost time and hosted its “Make History With Us” birthday celebration at the courthouse last weekend. There was only a hint of breeze in the morning air as supervisors and other officials began the ceremonies with a ribbon cutting ceremony that officially opened The Hanover History and Culture Museum and Welcome Center. Assistant County Administrator Jim Taylor provided opening remarks

Hanover County Sheriff ’s Office, CSB receive VACO awards By Jim Ridolphi The Mechanicsville Local In what has almost become an annual tradition, Hanover County was recognized with two Achievement Awards by the Virginia Association of Counties (VACO) for its continuing commitment to excellence in several departments. It’s the twelfth time the county has been tapped for the honors, and the second time the office has captured multiple awards in a single year. Phyllis Errico, General Counsel for VACO, presented the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and Community Services Board with awards of excellence at last week’s Board of Supervisors meeting. “It is my distinct privilege to present

Hanover County with two major achievement awards today,” Errico said. She said the awards are also a sense of pride on a more personal level. “When Hanover County wins an award with VACO, I cut in front of the line of my colleagues and I grab the opportunity to come because I am proud citizen of Hanover County and a former employee of Hanover County,” she said. Founded in 1934, VACO supports the efforts of county officials through advocacy, education, communication and member services. ool Spring Elementary School (CSES), Pole Green Elementary School (PGES), and Bell Creek Middle School (BCMS) have been named as 2020-2022 National PTA Schools of Excellence. The Hanover schools are three of only 351 schools and PTAs in the U.S. to achieve this prestigious status this year. Additionally, they make up 10% of the Virginia schools to earn the coveted designation, which recognizes the commitment of schools and PTAs in building an inclusive and welcoming school community where all families contribute to enriching the educational experience and overall well-being for all students. Ashley Soukup, the president of the Cool Spring Elementary School PTA, said the organization could not be more thrilled to receive the recognition. “Year after year we are blessed with dedicated parents and families that wish to serve the staff and students of Cool Spring in the same manner that our school’s faculty and staff serve our students; with compassion, generosity, and a positive energy that promotes excitement for academic growth and learning,” she said. “It is

an honor to be a member of such a wonderful PTA and we are proud to continue to serve Cool Spring in the spirit of this award!” Said 2020-21 CSES Principal Amy Williams: “The CSES PTA demonstrates an unwavering commitment to our students, staff, and community. Their dedication, creativity, and leadership helped to keep our students and families engaged and supported through unprecedented times.” Among other things, the CSES PTA was able to provide every student with individual manipulative kits for hands-on learning and all educators with Morning Meeting books to support social-emotional learning. Pole Green Elementary School Principal Rhonda Voorhees was also proud of the school and PTA’s achievement, which they also received in 2019. “Our PTA is a strong team who collaborates with our school to support all of our students in achieving academic goals, engages students and parents in family centered activities, and focuses to build our community to be a GREAT Gator team,” she said. “Thank you to our parents for your time and commitment to see AWARD, pg. 4

services and to identify programs that can serve as models for other counties,” Errico said. As the program enters its 19th year, VACO received 102 entries and 19 counties were selected for this year’s awards. Programs qualify for the awards according to a number of criteria including how the program offers innovative solutions to a problem or situation. Inter-governmental or private sector cooperation is also considered and programs must provide a model for

other counties. The Sheriff’s Office was recognized for its continued participation in the SHIELD Program, a comprehensive approach to community policing that connects police departments globally to seek innovative solutions to nagging problems. “The SHIELD Program started with a conversation with the New York City Police Department, and that conversation led to the NYPD changing the way in which they operated their SHIELD Program,” Hines said noting that program had previously

focused on interactions with VIPs and government officials. Hines had a different vision for the program in Hanover. “We asked if we could use the SHIELD program to talk to community groups, talk to businesses, speak with individuals,” Hines said. “New York City was excited about that change…. and we changed the program and it became the National SHIELD Network.” The cooperative program quickly evolved to a global initiative “We are now a global network of law enforcement comsee VACO, pg. 4

for that,” he concluded. Errico also presented an Achievement Award to the county’s Community Services Board (CSB) for a resiliency program that assists first responders called the Hanover County Fire/EMS Resiliency Initiative. “This initiative involves providing support to first responders who have a high level of stress and trauma in their everyday jobs,” Errico said. CSB Director Ivy Sager said the initiative has been “a labor of love for the past two years.” “It has been an honor to help build a program designed to enhance the capacity of local clinicians to be able to better address the mental health needs of our first responders,” Sager said. Sager said the effort has expanded during the past two

years, and more support is available due to training programs and additional clinicians coming on board. “This group of clinicians have already provided valuable assistance and information to our first responders,” she said. “As relationships with clinicians continue to grow, we are confident that the benefits of this program will be felt not only by the individual first responder but by their families, colleagues and the community,” she added. Sager said working with Hanover Fire/EMS has been a privilege and honor and recognized Chief Jethro Piland for his leadership regarding this issue. “On behalf of the CSB, I’d like to thank our partners with Hanover Fire/EMS for working with us to make this project a reality.”

CALENDAR | The Local Views

Second wind may be required By Jim Ridolphi The Mechanicsville Local

J

ust when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, a shark - in the form of a persistent variant of the COVID-19 virus - is chasing Americans back on the beach so to speak. It’s almost too much to fathom for a nation who has anxiously awaited a return to some form of normalcy following 12 or more months of isolation, vaccination and anticipation. Entering a local convenience store last week a sign warned that everyone entering must wear a mask with no regard to vaccination status. It replaced the one posted earlier that provided customers the option of masking up or not. A manager at the store told me the mandate is much more difficult to enforce than it was when it was first instituted at the height of the pandemic. “They’re used to not wearing them so they don’t,” he told me. He also said he is concerned about exposure to his employees, and how replacing any of them becomes more difficult by the day. For sure, what seems like the latest round of the virus demands our attention, no matter the degree of our exhaustion or pandemic fatigue. Far too many have learned too late the horrific impacts of COVID for us to ignore or dismiss this latest outbreak. In addition to a destructive and persistent stream of the virus with a transmissibility rate far times over the original variety, the latest wave of infections have also faced a public response that is divided regarding official advice from health officials. Pointing to endless reversals and contrary assumptions, they simply don’t trust government to distribute accurate or useful health information.

Others have taken a rather Cavalier approach with an ‘if I don’t know anyone who has died from the virus, then it can’t be that bad’ attitude. Another medical expert dismissed this latest wave completely and said COVID is something we are learning to live with, like the flu. Sadly, thousands of Americans won’t get that opportunity. I make no judgement on any or all of these opinions except to remind you the ones referenced do not represent the views of the author. The masks have returned at this house, and we’ll be following CDC guidelines as experts monitor the latest figures. Hopefully, as vaccinations increase those rates of infection will decline. But, it may be useful to enter this next round with a more realistic impression of the real threat the virus represents and the time and effort it might require to settle at acceptable levels. A successful end to the masks and quarantines we’ve grown so weary of will require a concerted effort, and a population that is united toward a single goal — the elimination of this virus. Although there’s always room for open discussion and debate regarding strategies and medical opinions, a vigilant and informed public might be the best defense against this familiar foe. The good news is the latest Delta Variant has convinced thousands that a vaccination is the best defense against unimaginable tragedy and personal loss. It’s one sure way to combat COVID and has been effective in lessening serious affects of the variant. When the war against COVID ends and it will, we can all celebrate the victory, united, as Americans who faced round two and emerged victorious. For many of us that would represent a true return to normal.

DeLILLE, Rachel Mary, June 6, 1994 to August 19, 2021, was welcomed into heaven on Thursday, August 19, 2021, while in the arms of her parents, Robert and Carrie DeLille. Rachel's extraordinary mark on the world is evident in the multitude of loved ones she leaves behind, including her sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends. Rachel graduated from Hanover High School in Mechanicsville, Va. in 2013 and enjoyed working at Creative while she was able. She looked forward to her time at Friends for Life each week and loved living and making friends at HopeTree for the past 10 months. Although life with myotonic muscular dystrophy was not easy, she never let her challenges define her. Instead, she persisted and amazed everyone as she mastered horseback riding, downhill skiing and public singing. While Rachel brought joy into the lives of everyone who knew her, she found the greatest joy in singing praise songs and rocking the babies who she loved so dearly as often as possible. Rachel's life will be celebrated in an outdoor gathering on Saturday, September 4, 2021. The family asks anyone attending to dress casually and bring lawn seating if desired. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Rachel's name to one of the following organizations that contributed to the grandeur of her life Hope Tree or Night to Shine. THERESA FOSTER

FOSTER, Theresa Newcomb, 68, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2021, with her husband and daughter by her side. Theresa was born to John and Joyce on October 25, 1952 in Topeka, Kansas. She grew up in Richmond, Virginia where she went on to meet her husband, Stephen, and they wed on August 18, 1973. They were blessed to spend 48 years by each other's side. Theresa devoted her life to being a loving and supportive wife and mother. In March of 2015, Theresa celebrated the day she earned the title of "Mimi" to her granddaughter, Vail. She took every

opportunity to share about her granddaughter and looked forward to each visit, where they would enjoy playing hair salon, eating "Mimi crackers" and drinking "Papa juice." Despite her hesitancy to ever allow any four-legged creature in her home, Theresa fell in love with her and Stephen's dog, Lilly, who faithfully laid next to them on the couch as they watched Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. Theresa was lucky to be surrounded by a large family and cherished any opportunity they were able to be together to share in food, fellowship and a friendly, yet competitive, game of Bingo. She is survived by her husband, Stephen Foster; her daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter, Stephanie, Jonathan and Vail Rohde; her mother, Joyce Johnson; her sisters, Carolyn Linville (Donald), Brenda Johnson (Butch), Kathy Sanders (Johnny); her brother, David Newcomb (Patricia); and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC OF AN APPLICATION BY VIRGINIA NATURAL GAS, INC. FOR APPROVAL OF ITS 2021 ANNUAL SAVE RIDER UPDATE FILING CASE NO. PUR-2021-00157 On July 30, 2021, Virginia Natural Gas, Inc. (“VNG” or the “Company”) filed an Application pursuant to § 56-604 E of the Code of Virginia (“Code”) and in accordance with Rule 80 of the Rules of Practice and Procedure (“Rules of Practice”) of the State Corporation Commission (“Commission”). VNG requests approval of its 2021 annual rider update filing for its Steps to Advance Virginia’s Energy Plan (“SAVE Plan”), under which VNG’s SAVE Rider, designated Rider E, is reconciled and adjusted (“2021 Annual Update”). The Company’s SAVE Plan is designed to facilitate the accelerated replacement of SAVE-eligible natural gas infrastructure. Rider E is designed to recover eligible infrastructure replacement costs associated with the SAVE Plan. VNG states that the calculation of the revenue requirement and rates associated with Rider E consist of two components: the SAVE Actual Cost Adjustment (“SACA”) and the Annual SAVE Factor (“ASF”), which were approved by the Commission in its 2012 SAVE Order. According to the Company, the SACA is an adjustment that ensures that the SAVE Rider recovers no more or less than the actual cost of implementing the SAVE Plan projects during the prior calendar year. Based on this calculation, the Company is proposing a SACA adjustment for the upcoming rate period of November 1, 2021, through October 31, 2022, of $1,363,773. The Company states that the ASF is the calculation of the revenue requirement related to the cumulative SAVE Plan infrastructure investment through the period for which the currently planned SAVE Rider will be in effect, November 1, 2021, through October 31, 2022. Based on this calculation, the ASF for the upcoming rate period is $9,702,902. Combining the ASF of $9,702,902 and the SACA of $1,363,773, the Company calculates a SAVE Rider revenue requirement of $11,066,675 for the rate period of November 1, 2021, through October 31, 2022. The Company further states that for purposes of the 2021 Annual Update, it is applying the revenue allocation factors proposed in the Stipulation in its current rate case, Case No. PUR-202000095, with three exceptions. According to the Company, the monthly SAVE Rider rate for customers receiving service under Schedule 1 – Residential will be $2.53 (a $1.84 increase over the current SAVE Rider rate), while the monthly SAVE Rider rate for customers receiving service under Schedules 6 and 7 – Large Firm C&I will be $304.95 and $173.39 (reflecting increases of $222.78 and $127.59), respectively. TAKE NOTICE that the Commission may adopt rates that differ from those appearing in the Company’s Application and supporting documents and may apportion revenues among customer classes and/or design rates in a manner differing from that shown in the Application and supporting documents. The details of these and other proposals are set forth in the Company’s Application. Interested persons are encouraged to review the Company’s Application and supporting exhibits for the details of these proposals. The Commission entered an Order for Notice and Comment that, among other things, directed the Company to provide notice to the public and provided interested persons an opportunity to comment or request a hearing on the Company’s Application. The Commission has taken judicial notice of the ongoing public health issues related to the spread of the coronavirus, or COVID-19. Fourth quarter financial numbers reveal positive news Expenditures down, revenues up for fiscal year By Jim Ridolphi The Mechanicsville Local It’s always good to receive a dose of good news, and Ashland Town Council members got exactly that at a meeting earlier this month. That news came in the form of a preliminary fourth quarter financial report presented by Town Manager Josh Farrar. “The key message and takeaway is that this is really good information and bodes really well for our financial position,” Farrar said prior to his presentation. The amended budget for 2021 showed $9.5 million in revenues and $11.5 million in expenditures. “That includes the purchase of Apple Garden…. and yes, we intentionally budgeted a deficit knowing that in a pandemic we were going to use our rainy day funds. That’s the purpose of it and the time that you use it,” Farrar said. As the fiscal year progressed, financial signs became more positive.

“The best news is as we get to June 30, the preliminary estimate is a much, much rosier picture,” the town manager said. Revised figures indicate a stronger financial position for the county. “We are estimating that rather than having $9.5 million in revenue, we are up closer to $11million,” Farrar said. That increase was fueled by meals and lodging receipts that came in higher than expected. “They came in gangbusters and did really, really, well for us.” There was also positive news regarding expenses. “On the expenditure side, we thought we’d be at $11.5 million and we’ve cut that down to $10.5 million,” he said. “A lot of that is vacancies. The Police Department has been struggling for a year and a half and they are finally getting closer to full staff; but, it was a tough year for them.” The positive preliminary results are also a result of an influx of CARES funding received during the last year. “We were able to apply the left over CARES funds to reduce our total expenditure of local dollars and that put us in a much better place,” Farrar said.

King William sports fans hoping for a more normal year will get what they wish — for now. The fall season has started on time and plans are to play full schedules for each sport.

Pet food pantry seeks donations for furry friends Contributed report news@mechlocal.com The Regional Animal Shelter has established a Pet Food Pantry to help pet owners in King William and King & Queen counties during the current economic situation. The shelter is located at 20201 King William Rd. in King William. The program is designed to help owners affected by financial loss to feed their pets so they can remain with their families that love them, instead of having to surrender their companion due to the inability to feed them. This program is not intended to be a long-term or permanent solution for feeding family’s pets. There is no application required. To talk about the type of food needed, call 804-769-4983.

Courtesy of the Regional Animal Shelter

The Regional Animal Shelter has healthy dogs, puppies, cats and kittens available for adoption! For more information, please call 804-769-4983. The address is 20201 King William Road, King William, Virginia, 23086.

Donations of pet food supplies ae needed for this program. They may be dropped off at the Regional Animal Shelter, King William County Administration Building, or the King William Parks & Rec Building at the U.S. 360 Complex.

‘Working Whiskers’ cat adoption program The Regional Animal Shelter, located at 20201 King William Rd. in King William, is kicking off a new proactive cat management program known as “Working Whiskers” cat adoption program. This program will help less-social and feral cats that are not suitable for household pets find a home, and eliminate the need for euthanasia of these otherwise healthy cats. These cats can live comfortably in barns, stables, agricultural property, wineries, breweries, warehouses, workshops, nurseries or greenhouses, while providing companionship to other animals and expert rodent control. Cats in this program will be adopted in pairs and will be fully vetted prior to adoption -- spayed or neutered; rabies

vaccination; distemper vaccination; ear mite treatment; flea and tick treatment; microchip; and ear tip. If you are interested in considering adoption of a pair of “Working Whiskers”, contact the shelter at animalshelter@ kingwilliamcounty.us and a link of the program overview will be sent to you. Note: The shelter does not need cats for this program, it has plenty. If you have feral or less social cats living around your property, the best thing for them is to stay where they are already comfortable and at home rather than relocating them. If you need assistance spaying or neutering cats so they do not continue to reproduce, contact the Indian Rivers Humane Society, which has a feral cat spay/neuter program, at 804885-3109.

Geers celebrate 70th anniversary

Dr. Chandler has over 30 years of experience performing cataract surgery. He offers advanced technology lens implants that can correct distance, near and intermediate vision after cataract surgery and even correct astigmatism. The traditional lens implants used by Dr. Chandler give excellent distance and night vision but often leave a need for reading glasses. The new advanced technology lenses expand the range of focus to include near and intermediate distances for reading and computer work, for example. Call Chandler Eye Care Specialists at 256-3020 to make an appointment today to discuss these options.

Visitors took full advantage of available tours and marveled at some of the intricate displays. Hanover is the first museum site in the state to feature the exhibit which runs through Oct. 3 and then moves to Danville. The Smithsonian exhibition, called “Crossroads: Changes in Rural America”, was brought in partnership with the Ashland Museum. “But, we are also telling the story of rural Hanover,” Fawcett said. “It’s a story that hasn’t been told because we are still living it.” Betsy Hodges of the Ashland Museum said 12 museums applied for the exhibit and six were eventually chosen. “We partnered with Jaime (Fawcett) on the application. Each of us brought something different to the table,” Hodges said. “All of our Hanover museum community is strengthened by

partnerships.” “We were honored to partner with the Ashland Museum and be chosen to host the very first touring Smithsonian exhibit on Agriculture,” Budesky said regarding the partnership. Chickahominy Supervisor Angela Kelly-Wiecek helped cut the ribbon and said the Museum represents a positive step for Hanover County. “I think this presents a fantastic opportunity,” she said. “Just the exhibit itself is wonderful talking about rural life in America, but I think it’s the opportunities and possibilities moving forward that are really exciting,” she added. Kelly-Wiecek thanked the many volunteers who helped with the event today and said it has been a team effort planning and executing an ongoing schedule of anniversary events in the near future that continue the celebration including a Classic Car Cruise-in and

Festival goers gathered at the entrance to the ceremonies.Hanover Master Gardeners showed their skills at one of the exhibits. Wayne Hazzard, (right), also spoke at the opening ceremony in his role as a member of the Hanover Museum of History and Culture Foundation. The Chicken Fingers (below, left) provided live music during the event while visitors crowded in the new Museum to see exhibits like the Smithsonian’s “Crossroads: Change in Rural America”, (bottom, right).

Hanover Tavern’s Fall Fest celebration. Current Ashland Vice Mayor and former Hanover supervisor, assistant county administrator and planning director John Hodges got an early look at the new Museum/ Welcome center and liked what he saw. “I was impressed by the new Museum in the Old Clerks Office next to the Historic Hanover Courthouse, an especially appropriate location for the County’s 300th Anniversary celebrations,” Hodges said. “Hanover’s unique history blends well and helps illustrate many of the themes of the Smithsonian Exhibit “Changes in Rural America” on display, especially those dealing with the challenges of protecting the rural landscape and culture.”

The museum is also open and easy to navigate. “The displays are user friendly and very accessible to all ages, especially for kids wanting to don fire and police uniforms and equipment,” the Vice Mayor said. He also endorsed the efforts of the two museums in attaining the exhibit. “ Also, I am very proud of the successful collaboration of the Hanover Museum with the Ashland Museum to organize the exhibits and program,” Hodges said. “The Museum is a terrific addition to the County’s educational and tourism facilities,” he added. Ashland Mayor Steve Trivett attended the celebration and said it’s important to recognize the positive relationship the town and county enjoy. “We share a common history,”

Trivett said. “There’s a lot of history that covers the Town and the County and we want to make sure that all history is appreciated.” Trivett said the Museum opening is significant event for Hanover and Ashland. “This is a big deal for tourism, and tourism that comes to the courthouse will likely come to Ashland and vice versa. This is good for all of us,” Trivett said “History is all about the past and we learn from it but this is about the future, and this helps a better future for Hanover.” Events continued with a presentation of the Parson’s Cause at the historic Hanover Courthouse. Re-enactors replayed a well worn exercise in American history that delivers a relevant message to this day, and a packed audience appreci-

ated the performance. Assistant county administrator Taylor said even with the year’s delay due to COVID, the celebration was a success. “It was wonderful to see many people come out here today and celebrate our anniversary and cut the ribbon on the new Museum of History and Culture as well as a new Welcome Center,” he said. “This will do a lot to attract visitors and will also serve our residents well; and recognize the great history we have here in Hanover.” As Taylor glanced across the crowded lawn surrounding the old courthouse, he seemed satisfied, and relieved. “We’ve been so looking forward to this day and we are so grateful to host the community and have such a great event and I think it turned out well.”

Hanover wins close match in county quad By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor GLEN ALLEN – One could make a lot of money selling the close shave at the finish of the Hanover County Quad Wednesday. Atlee was looking set to claim a victory as the last group reached the 18th hole at The Crossings. But a strong performance by Hanover’s No. 6, Alex Wratchford, brought the Hawks a one-stroke victory. Wratchford shot an 84 to earn Hanover 330 to 331 win. “It was exciting. It came down to the last hole,” said Patrick Henry head golf coach Dave Hudak. It was crowded at the top. Hudak’s Patriots weren’t far behind, six strokes in back of Hanover with a team score of 336. And, while Mechanicsville was a pretty distant fourth team-wise, the Mustangs could boast of the day’s medalist, their No. 1 Madison Lehr, who shot a 2-over 74. Still, Hanover won the day based on the tight grouping of its top four: Adam Lankford and Walter McLamb each scored a 9-over 81 to lead the Hawks, followed by Paul McNally at 83 and Wratchford’s 84. For Wratchford, a sophomore, his performance was a big boost. “He made the team as a freshman, but didn’t play during the pandemic season,” said Hanover head golf coach Phil Hein. “He’s battled for that six or seven spot this year for us.” His performance, however,

was just what the Hawks needed – and emphasize – this year. “Our whole philosophy is, we don’t have a Wilkinson this year. We have a balanced team,” Hein said. “My one shot 81 and my six shot 85. It’s a four-shot swing there for the most part. These kids are all learning that team golf is what matters. “It’s nice to have a big horse to ride up front and still throw up a good number, but if we all come together and play our game, we can be competitive on any given day.”

Mustangs stampede to big win at Deep Run By Rob Witham for The Local GLEN ALLEN – When you’ve lost 23 of your last 26 football games, you look at a new season as a new opportunity. And when opportunity presented itself early in Mechanicsville’s seasonopening drive Thursday night at Deep Run High School, Mustang head coach Ryan Turnage rolled the dice. On fourth-and-12 inside Wildcat territory, rather than punt, Turnage gave the green light to junior quarterback Jordan Callahan who, after not finding an open receiver, took off and willed himself to a first down. That spark turned into a Mechanicsville offense on fire, racking up over 250 yards of rushing offense in a 43-7 rout over Deep Run to give the Mustangs their first win since Oct. 11, 2019. It wasn’t just the offense on fire, as the Wildcats visited Mechanicsville’s side of the field six times, but couldn’t find the end zone until the fourth quarter after the game’s outcome had long been decided. “Defensively, we played really well in the first half. We felt like we had a good handle on what they would try to do to us,” Turnage said. “Our game plan was simple, and the kids played hard.” After Callahan found Aaron Maxie on a 31-yard touchdown pass for the game’s opening score, the Mustangs struck again, thanks in part to a huge Deep Run mistake, as a snap to the punter on fourth down sailed over his head. The Mustangs took over at the Wildcat 7, and Cole Varner scored from 2 yards out for a ond quarter drive with a 7-yard the first half, kicker Thomas to the locker room in a frenzy 14-0 lead. touchdown run to extend the Richman nailed a 44-yard field leading 24-0. scoring act as Maxie added another touchdown, this time stepping in front of a Deep Run receiver for an 8-yard interception return for a score to make it 31-0 with 4:52 left in the third quarter. Early in the final stanza, Varner broke open a 56-yard run to add six more points. The Wildcats’ lone tally was courtesy of a Robert Paster run with 7:07 remaining. Mechanicsville’s Adam Elaal finished the scoring with a 7-yard run with 1:08 remaining. The victory, while critically important for a young team searching to begin a new era roughly coinciding with the

name change of the school and the team, came with some serious rough edges. The Mustangs committed 17 penalties for 165 yards. It’s not easy to win a football game by 36 points while committing so many infractions. Turnage understands why it happened and had already started working on it in the postgame huddle on the field. “We preach to them about being excited. Some of them took it a little too far,” Turnage said. “We’ll address it. We’ll take care of it.” And while Mustang fans can certainly be excited about not only the win, but also the plethora of young playmakers on display on opening night, they should take the most pride into this Thursday’s home opener against Powhatan for the work see STAMPEDE, pg. 23

Raiders accept Warriors’ gifts in 17-0 victory good football team. “We were trying to find things that were going to work, and when we found it, we stomped in the mud puddle until it was dry.” Atlee could not get to the end zone in the secondand third quarters. A nearly 40-yard-long field goal attempt by Tschantre hit the crossbar and fell into the end zone. Still, Henrico wasn’t finished with its gift-giving. A fumble on a fourth-quarter long snap gave the Raiders great field position one more time. Again, Warren unwrapped the present with a 2-yard touchdown run, and Tschantre added the pointafter to make it 17-0. Warren led the Raiders offensively with 15 carries for 75 yards and both Atlee touchdowns. Dave Lawrence can be reached at dlawrence@mechlocal.com.

By Dave Lawrence Sports Editor MECHANICSVILLE – Henrico’s football team visited Atlee Thursday bearing gifts, and the Raiders were not in the least bit shy accepting them. Atlee eagerly took advantage of Warrior mistakes, making Henrico pay dearly for its mistakes and penalties in earning a 17-0 season-opening win. Henrico led in most offensive statistics: 160 to 104 total yards, 73 to 13 passing yards, 63 to 51 total plays. The two teams were roughly equal in terms of rushing yards, first downs, and third-down conversions. But the Warriors had four turnovers – all interceptions – to none for Atlee, one blocked punt, a bad snaps and a fumble on a punt that repeatedly gave Atlee excellent field position deep in Warrior territory. “Any win is a good win,” said Atlee head football coach Matt Gray. “Football’s a game of situations and you try to take advantage of everything you’re given in all those situations.” Atlee’s first score followed one of Henrico’s earliest mistakes. On the Warriors’ first possession, they were stifled by Atlee’s defense. The snap was a bit short, and as the punter reached forward to snag the football, his knee hit the ground. The ball was ruled dead, and the Raiders took over. Atlee running back Caleb Warren took Henrico’s first gift and ran 12 yards for the Raiders’ first score. Zach Tschantre’s conversion attempt was good, making the score 7-0. For the most part, the Raiders controlled the line of scrimmage, both on offense and defense. “I think we’ve got a good group,” Gray said. “I think we’ve

done in the trenches. On both sides of the ball, the Mechanicsville linemen consistently did their job, won their battles, and won them decisively. In the powerhouse battlefield known as Region 4B, where only eight of 17 teams will taste postseason play this year, they’ll need continued development along the lines, and reminders to keep the emotions in check. “They’re going to be ready to play,” Turnage said of Powhatan, noting his long-time association with their head coach, Mike Henderson. “They’re a good football team, so we’re going to see what we’re made of right out of the gate.” Rob Witham can be reached at sports@mechlocal.com.

got a special group of guys. I think we’ve got some talented guys. But I think what is most fun about this group is they’re extremely high character, they work really hard, and they play for each other.”

After a disastrous opening the Warriors rallied somewhat to keep Atlee from crossing the goal line. When a blocked Henrico punt gave the Raiders a firstand-goal at the Warrior 5,

Henrico’s defense stiffened, forcing the Raiders to opt for a 23-yard field goal attempts. Atlee kicker Zach Tschantre’s aim was true, increasing the Raiders’ lead to 10-0. The Raiders found suc-
