Through the hands of artists, history splashes across canvases, songs echo the experiences of generations before us, and statues breathe life into forgotten stories. Art enables us to witness the evolution of mankind throughout the centuries, encapsulating our collective joys, struggles, and triumphs.

xpanding-Horizons

The world of art has long been celebrated for its capacity to captivate, inspire, and challenge our perceptions. However, the art world remains haunted by the specter of exclusivity, depriving countless artists of diverse backgrounds an opportunity to showcase their talent. Embracing diversity in art is not merely an act of political correctness; it is an acknowledgment that different perspectives and experiences hold immense value. By doing so, we can harness art as a powerful catalyst for social change, inclusivity, and bridge-building, enriching our collective consciousness in the process. Art as a Mirror of Society: Art serves as a reflection of the times we live in, portraying societal issues, and echoing the cultural fabric of our communities. Allowing diverse voices into the art world ensures that not only the stories of a select few are told. Artists from marginalized backgrounds bring forth unique perspectives and narratives, challenging societal norms and opening dialogue on issues that may otherwise be overlooked. One striking example is the renowned Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. Through her heartfelt and deeply personal self-portraits, Kahlo broke the mold of conventional beauty standards while simultaneously addressing subjects like pain, identity, and gender roles. By embracing her own diversity, Kahlo spurred conversations about body positivity, mental health, and gender equality, ultimately shaping societal perceptions and encouraging acceptance. Promoting Inclusivity and Understanding: The power of art lies in its ability to bridge gaps and facilitate understanding between individuals from diverse backgrounds. By infusing art with diversity, we create platforms that amplify underrepresented voices and initiate conversations that transcend cultural, racial, and socioeconomic boundaries.

The Cruciality of Embracing Diversity in the Art World Kara Walker, an African-American artist, is renowned for her provocative and visually striking installations that tackle race, sexuality, and power dynamics. Her work forces viewers to confront issues of historical racism and systemic oppression head-on. By challenging societal norms, Walker encourages self-reflection and fosters a greater understanding of the complexities of race relations, ultimately promoting inclusivity and tolerance. Overcoming Criticisms and Drawbacks: Critics may argue that embracing diversity dilutes the purity and authenticity of art. However, diversity enhances rather than detracts from artistic expressions. It fuels innovation, encourages experimentation, and dismantles outdated structures that confine artistic potential. Moreover, art should not be seen as a finite commodity; rather, it should be celebrated as a limitless source of creativity that thrives on diverse perspectives. The art world must actively challenge its historically exclusive nature and embrace diversity as a catalyst for social change and inclusivity. The works of Frida Kahlo, Kara Walker, and countless other artists highlight the transformative power of diverse perspectives. By allowing artists from all backgrounds to be seen, heard, and valued, we create opportunities for empathy, understanding, and a deeper appreciation of the human experience. Let us recognize the value of diversity in art, not only for the sake of representation but also for the richness and depth it brings to our artistic encounters. Together, we can champion artistic endeavors that amplify diverse voices, foster acceptance, and navigate the path towards a more harmonious and inclusive society.

he 11th edition of Investec Cape Town Art Fair, Africa’s largest art fair, took place on 16 -18 February 2024 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. This edition of Investec Cape Town Art Fair sees the city of Cape Town play a far more significant role in foregrounding the Art Fair’s activities and artists for its local and international audience of collectors and institutions. As Fair director Laura Vincenti puts it, “The city’s geography is an integral part of Investec Cape Town Art Fair’s success. Cape Town is a vibrant cultural hub, with a supportive community. It is very attractive to international collectors, with the great combination of diverse, cutting-edge art and a favourable exchange rate. This year the Fair continues its work of providing an annual platform for artists, galleries, curators, museums, cultural institutions, collectors, and art enthusiasts to connect and interact in the name of art. The Fair is also becoming known for facilitating meaningful dialogue, education and far-reaching interaction around contemporary African (and global) art.”

Growing a contemporary art ecosystem

H

aving celebrated its first decade this year, Investec Cape Town Art Fair is now well established as one of Cape Town’s key international attractions. The Fair is strategically positioned as the leading art event on the African continent, connecting contemporary art from Africa to the markets in Europe, the US, and the rest of the world. This means that the Fair offers a unique platform for emerging contemporary galleries, artists and ideas from markets outside of the traditional centres of art power and those from the African continent, to interact on an equal footing. With significant and growing international participation, the Fair is an important forum for setting curatorial and collecting trends to understand the African art market’s direction and growth. The 2024 edition of Investec Cape Town Art Fair will again bring together Africa’s leading galleries as well as cutting-edge galleries from Europe and the USA, offering an unparalleled opportunity to view and acquire high-quality, contemporary artworks. Visitors to the Fair can expect an extensive public programme both at the Fair as well as in and around the City of Cape Town. Architectural and conceptual design for the Fair layout The physical layout of the Fair takes advantage of Fair Director’s Laura Vincenti’s experience and expertise as an architect. It is laid out in blocks related to the curatorial concepts and thematics of the Fair and the artists being showcased, rather than in the more conventional rows of exhibiting booths. Each curated section that is of interest to visitors will therefore be in the same space for ease of access.

atch out too for Investec Cape Town Art Fair-related programming from all the leading Cape Town-based galleries, museums and institutions, who will open thought-provoking shows and host engaging programmes throughout the city over the period of the Fair. Among other events, there will be a major public art and urban intervention in the scenic inner-city area of the BoKaap, as the city truly becomes one of the most attractive and interesting art destinations anywhere in the world. ● The MAIN section comprises exhibiting galleries from around the world, many from the rest of the African continent. Exhibitor numbers are steadily increasing year-on-year, and international exhibitors are now getting back to pre-pandemic levels. ● Tomorrows/ Today is a curated section that has grown exponentially and expanded to twelve exhibitors. Renowned Spanish curator for this section, Dr. Mariella Franzoni, provides a platform for emerging and underrepresented artists and acts as a forecast of future relevant practices and ideas. The section will feature twelve selected solo show projects, with a cash prize going to the artist with the highest quality presentation. Titled Inhabiting the Wild, the 2024 edition explores and reimagines the concept of wildness through artistic imagination. The concept extends the idea of liberation by seeking to bring together diverse voices through this renewed sense of the wild, inspired by queer, feminist, decolonial and materialist studies, and embracing both overt and subtle forms of political dissidence. ● The SOLO section is curated by Cape Town based writer, critic and curator Sean O’Toole. Titled Loopholes in the Walls of Darkness, it focuses on painting. Notwithstanding astonishing advances in digital art, painting, though a solitary practice, continues to set the pace, in galleries and museums, as well as at market. The ten most expensive artworks sold anywhere in 2022 were all paintings. Figurative painting remains the medium du jour of commerce and a hallmark of the zeitgeist circa now. O’Toole states “But painting has rubbed up against disinterest and neglect so many times, and so is a medium aware of its own obsolescence and mortality. This might account for painting’s elastic form and unravelling edges, its infiltration into adjacent media of sculpture and photography, as well as spill over into performance, film and digital practices’. ● GENERATIONS is the fair’s newest section curated by Natasha Becker from the United States and South African curator Amogelang Maledu, an intergenerational curatorial conversation between the two. The project celebrates artists who are at different stages in their careers and instigates cross-generational conversations among them. The project is intended to foreground artists who address the flaws of the past and reconstruct a future that utilises the talents and creativity of all generations. ● An expanded ALT section returns this year. The section is dedicated to projects that reflect the many ways in which the art world must adapt to circumstance. Young, non-traditional art project spaces can showcase their artists in a non-conventional way through an installation that offers a fresh interpretation of the anti-booth. The section invites dialogue around unconventional, non-traditional modes of practice and thinking and intends to break away from the usual art fair environment, bringing in a diversity of emerging voices

ut also Pinocchio and Geppetto transformed into cyclists. It’s possible In a fantasy world where every character lives inside a tram ticket. Mute, but full of color. «I have at least 5 thousand notes in bills. from 2015 to today, and I still have more than 1,000,000 to color”, says Roberto Sironi, a self-taught artist, 69 years old, from Milan, resident in the Giambellino-Lorenleggio district. He picked up the first one from the ground. Cancelled, expired. “ I took it and thought that the paper was perfect for drawing.” And so he made his debut by inaugurating the project “A tram ticket - Artistic obliterations”, within exhibitions in Municipality 6 and beyond. For 8 years he has continued to collect “expired” public transport coupons which go from waste to small works of art. The characters have the soul of acrylic colors, which I spread with Mason’s spatulas or rags. I never use brushes.” Now he knows that soon those mini paintings will become the only paper tickets in circulation because the ATM ticket will gradually leave room for magnetic cards: electronic travel tickets, to be recharged, to be kept in your pocket, and be used to get on public transport.

By Marianna Vazzana ( www.ilgiorno.it) Not to be thrown away. And they cannot be artists’ canvases. A “revolution” that will start next month. «And then anyone who wants a paper ticket can just come to me», smiles Sironi. In the boxes in the living room, he still has hundreds of them, all travel tickets already stamped and ready to be colored. “I will continue to collect them and have them donated to me as long as they are still in circulation.” And when the paper cards are just a memory, his works will be even more precious. Testimony of a vanished time. “The tickets themselves are already precious like this because they close a story, that of the journey and of whoever made it. The art continues the story thanks to the characters that on the tickets seem to emerge from the black stripe printed vertically as if it were the back of a theatre.” But the prospect of the paper’s disappearance makes him sad. «Because it is another step forward for digital at the expense of the human, in a world where there is less and less space for artists, where artificial intelligence is increasingly replacing the person. Will art, which is a continuous challenge with matter, also disappear? Or will the true artist who creates with matter be the only one to preserve humanity?” While he reflects, he shows his latest idea: the ticket that becomes the “La Scala ticket”. with the opera poster painted on one side. “I will continue as long as I have tickets.” I am now retired but I have always lived on art and will continue to do so. First as a guitarist and, since 2004. as a painter, even though I never studied in academies. I also wrote plays and books.” Among the works that he exhibits and places In grand, dimensions. Tattooed roses F. Guzzardi ( Rose Tatuate)

The Branches of Yggdrasil In unknown realms, and unspeakable mysteries the echoes of our souls begin to unfold. Between the realms of matter and the realms of eternity, lies the riddle of our eternal kingdoms. The seeds of karma flow like a cosmic stream, as beings traverse the wheel of time. Their actions propagate according to divine patterns, like the branches of Yggdrasil tall and wise, we sail through realms beyond the mortal skies. Rebirth awaits at the end of every branch, with stories to learn, to share, to mend. “Tattooed Roses” is not just a collection of poems, but also a “collection” of life, a set of thoughts, an anthology of feelings “tattooed” on the infinite passage of time. This collection of words that are never random and always of great literary effect accompanies us on a journey through the melancholy of a “déjàvu” as if the world were in front of a mirror and that mirror was its author!

The audition, today accompanied, if not even replaced, by the self-tape, is a delicate, fundamental moment for actors. What mistakes should be avoided and what aspects should be given priority? How to give your best? How to prepare a scene? These questions to which “exceptional teachers” and established, esteemed directors will give concrete answers, with an authorial outlook that makes a difference in the Italian film market and beyond. They will discuss with the participants in the classroom, in search of a common language. The methodology of practical work will focus on training in front of the camera, through study and experimentation on scenes taken from films or series, which will be delivered in good time to the students, who are required to memorize the lines of the chosen/assigned character. This methodology will allow us to identify any critical issues and propose a series of tools aimed at increasingly improving communication between director and actors, in the context of character work. The perception of what is expressed, compared to the interpretative image transmitted on the monitor, represents an important moment of awareness for personal artistic improvement and growth. Working directly with a director, becoming a flexible and proactive instrument, and grasping the uniqueness of his particular vision, represents an added value both for the professional actor, with the constant desire to improve and face the auditions with greater confidence, and for the novice actor who must forge a still formless creative material and channel his potential.

T

his is how my film begins, with an indication or, if you want, advice, perhaps humorous, perhaps sarcastic, perhaps provocative, but that’s exactly how it is! Making a film just takes a lot of courage when you don’t have the means to make it! “Film at Night” is not a film to watch while eating popcorn! It’s a film to watch with a parachute! At any moment you could fall into a foggy visionary state, one of those smoky London fogs where even though you can’t see anything you always know where you are! This is why we need a parachute of “understanding” because watching the film, and I mean “vision” is a journey into artistic unconsciousness that I sincerely adore!... The film is an Italian story that wallows hopelessly in a French puddle! The film was shot one night in Italy and five in France and is simply the adventures of four Italian actors and an actress in search of a fortune, and fortune! Between jokes, jokes, and gags, the four will find their solution to the problem despite never having understood the problem! So being an “Italian-style French party” I needed a certain type of music and so throughout the film or almost manouche music reigns supreme! Among other things, I am also a lover of that music so it was easy for me to write pieces with the guitar that gave me that spirit and also the smell of that world!... It’s a metaphor for life and puts the lens under the magnifying the vanity! I found interesting the idea that the best came from hell, rather than from a false paradise or a useless limbo! And then

I am truly convinced that life in the end is a great film and each of us is exactly where we want to be, that is in our character! And then the charm…

believe there are many ways to interpret life! Some imagine that it is an infinite tunnel in which for better or worse one has to stay, those who think it is just a big carousel that will stop at a certain point, t h o s e who, like almost everyone, don’t think about it at all and rather than live they let themselves be lived by events, from things, from people!... The routine! Here, for example, routine is the antechamber of death, the corridor before the execution, the passageway in which to wait for something to finally happen, the passage to the unknown, or the passage to go to that place that so many people aspire to. call heaven!... The invisible puppeteer is often ourselves because we are so used to obeying laws that we don’t even know, we get overwhelmed by boredom, habit, terrible illness, and everyday life!... Life is precisely because it is life, instead, it is movement, resourcefulness, change, risk, desire, passion, and curiosity, it is anything but the display of complete immobility! So what you say is true: we are always waiting for someone to change this blessed life for us, the director of our fears who should with who knows what magic wand transform those fears into courage, into new choices, and in short into a real future!

“Only those who are unique can attend the summit”, All roads are the same, the difference is made by the shoes! It’s just a question of charm!” It’s always just a question of charm! Charm is everywhere, it is the engine of relationships! In a company, charm is what makes the difference! There is everything in charm: there is charm, beauty, interest, culture, vision of the future, instinct, and intuition! Charm is the father of all love battles, the ideal companion for a journey into fantasy as well as into reality! Now is not the time or the opportunity to talk about the film...Now is the time for curiosity! I’m just saying that this film is the result of a joke, an innocent lie! Even though it was made without money and with very few resources, it was screened twice in 2008 at the Cannes International Film Festival as a collateral event in the Cannes Cinéphiles section! Not bad for a first film! It is certainly a comical, visionary film in its way, a film that has no claims of box office or even dreams of cinematic glory! One could say that it is just a tribute to the theater of the absurd or to dejà vu reminiscent of Fellini! Daydreaming! Maybe the reason for this movie is in this sentence! I am a dreamer so I always try to go beyond what I see because I

anity is a poison that leaves no escape! Indeed, more than a poison it is a very powerful virus and when the virus has entered your veins it’s over!... Vanity is the number one enemy of talent and it takes no prisoners! With vanity, we forget that this is the artist’s job and it is very hard, where every day you learn something and every day you have to be available for it!... Skill does not need vanity, but vanity always needs skill! Without this, vanity becomes exactly what it should be, an unusable tendency toward the useless, the superfluous, and the vain! Of course it is not an attitude exclusive to artists, but it always puts on a show and perhaps, for this reason, it has become, especially today in our era where the image is important, decisive, I would say “covering”, a virus!... I tried in my little cinematic world to put seduction in the foreground! To seduce you must have a good supply of reasons and an important selection of options... you must have the numbers to seduce and the numbers are never wrong! To woo the top you have to be unique! It’s inexorable! I understand that it may be a harsh concept but that’s exactly how it is! I know it may seem cruel but the tip of that pyramid is very sharp and to stay in balance you need a sense of uniqueness! I’m implacable, I confess, but I’m not

The Seventh Art! by Roberto Sironi

What is the origin word of cinema? Somewhere I read that the word cinema or cinematography has origins from the ancient Greek κίνημα, -τος “movement” and γραφή, graphḗ, “writing” today the set of arts, techniques and industrial and distribution activities that produce as a result commercial a film! The combination of movement and writing in a single idea is brilliant! Therefore, the movement can be considered a description of a writing and the writing a component of the movement as long as the two souls merge, magically, in an external form perceivable through the sense of sight called: image! A movie… This term is interesting and apparently, it would be difficult to understand when compared to the word “cinema” and instead... Instead, this term of only four letters brings together an immense world made of images, sounds, stories, faces, colors... “Film” is a loanword from the English language that indicates a membrane or a thin layer of material; it is, therefore, a synonym of film, the most authoritative synonym, and what is very interesting and somewhat astonishing, until the 1930s it was used in the feminine form and then transformed over time into a masculine noun! History tells us that the first example of film was made by the Lumière brothers on 28 December 1895 in Paris, about ten very short documentaries attended by a large and selected group of spectators! But history aside… Dream and reality mix in a present in which the future and the past are no longer a temporal representation of before, after, and during, but of a “here and now” that leaves no time for any reflection: time in a film, therefore in the cinema it no longer has its natural sense, everything proceeds at an almost incomprehensible speed, a speed that has to do with light in a unit of time which, as happens in a dream, considers everything except the weather!

What is a movie?

T

echnically it is the scrolling of a film in which there are many fragments of moments that one after another pass before our eyes, a visual work that simulates experiences and communicates sensations, feelings, stories, ideas, and beauty in different ways. . , perceptions, stories and atmospheres through the use of images and sounds that make a hypothetical dream an authentic reality! The dream, indeed! Cinema, through a film, becomes the natural and human place to live in a dream, frequent it, absorb it, and pursue it to the purest boundaries of fantasy! In front of a film, despite knowing that the impossible is unattainable, we are forced to make possible what a moment of incredible, unimaginable, and unlikely reality! Our thought which is certainly the fastest thing that man can imagine and have, makes a film a constant magic while still having before our eyes the obvious, manifest, sensational, and obvious solution, a geometrically rectangular solution that takes the name of screen! In this sense, a film is the only trick that can do without a solution, even the most remote, implicit, or enigmatic one it may be! In the world of art, it often happens that miracles are not interventions due to supernatural events, but only human actions made of great intuitions and incalculable talents: in the seventh art it is exactly like that! Therefore, the Seventh Art! After Architecture, Music, Painting, Sculpture, Poetry, and Dance, here is Cinema, the seventh and last art in chronological order, defined thus in 1921 by the critic Ricciotto Canudo, when he published the manifesto “The Birth of the Seventh Art” foreseeing that cinematography would synthesize the extension of space and the dimension of time! It is said that cinema is nothing other than the evolution of the art of photography, which in turn was the evolution of painting, which in turn derives from architecture... Cinema, probably, History perhaps one day will exist he will say it, and he will explain it to us with other acrobatic concepts! It could or could be the complete evolution of all the other arts, a fusion of colors, movement, images, and sounds united in a diabolical and indissoluble affectively creative bond! This now-certified Seventh Art has also managed to become literature for the eyes, a visual narrative in which every glance is a fragment of film of life lived on the margins, at the center or on the periphery of our ex-

inema as a parallel, simultaneous, concomitant, independent, separate, collateral, contemporary world, a visible, authentic, original world, or just a fantastic, chimerical, imaginary, utopian, fake, and unreal world in which fiction imposes itself as the only teacher of life of an unachievable reality? In the darkness of a cinema, the light of the imagination is always on, it is a lighthouse to find the lost island of fantasy, a flash of genius that millimetrically illuminates a horizon enclosed almost by magic in a screen, and in that screen, they go and lives of all kinds come, the stories follow and chase each other while dazed and amazed and open-mouthed faces look for moments of suspense, happiness, pride and hope. Those faces, those bodies sunk in red armchairs are one with that darkness that makes them mysterious witnesses, messengers of stories and films, ambassadors of fantasies that would have liked to overturn their existences... In that darkness, everything is confused between barely perceived breaths and indefinite whispers. The cinema… Everything is possible in there... This magic box, despite having no sides, is a container of secrets and illusions like the cylinder for the magician! From there come the wildest fantasies, the most incredible love stories, memories of distant wars, and science fiction of other worlds submerged in the unreasonable and paradoxical known and unknown universe! Anything can happen in there! Fairy tales that meet reality, monsters in love with impossible love, ghost ships in search of a port in which to disappear, cartoons that have made humanity a parallel race so as not to forget all those artificial intelligence that will probably change the meaning of life in a sense of absence! The cinema… We are all in this great film! Technically we live, in an inexplicable symbiosis, the flow of a film in which many fragments of moments are mixed one after the other pass before our eyes... We are a visual work that simulates experiences and communicates in different ways between them sensations, feelings, stories, ideas, beauty, perceptions, stories, and atmospheres through the use of images and sounds that make us a hypothetical dream in an indecipherable reality The dream is the only confirmed presence of life! Everyone in their film, like actors or characters in stories who will rarely win an Oscar! And then: who knows, one day we will no longer go to the cine ma but we will be the cinema, being there without being there in search of a reality that has given up on the present to disappear into the immense nothingness of a future that we will no longer be able to imagine, a lost future in a new “Space Odyssey”… …However, it will end: long live cinema!

e are here for IM Italian magazine with Gianni Rosato, an actor we already know, whom we have already gone to visit once for an interview and who usually, in short, we look for our people who have already been interviewed, because in some way they have had some important news to tell us. This time we wish you well. So many good things have happened, and you have a new film and a new blockbuster. irst and foremost happy to be Hosted at the home of IM Italian magazine, which has already brought me luck, as you had already wished me in the past. So I expect a lot more news after this interview because, in my opinion, it will become a succession of news and good things that will come, what can I say I’m happy because after our interview I received an offer for the film that is DO UT DES of which I am the male protagonist, where I am flanked by very good actors such as Beatrice Schiaffino, who is the female protagonist, Ilaria Lorica, Luca Vallone, Ilde Mauri, and many others in this film. But the movie was born right after the post-pandemic period, when we were all forcibly confined at home and I remember that I did the self-tape during that period. And then we shot the film in Rome, Milan and Budapest.

On the fourth callback. I still remember seeing people coming and going, so I even had the benefit of the doubt about the hypothetical choice and then finally I remember the production calling me that it was 11:03. I was sitting on the bed, watching a movie,

ously there was no longer the possibility of being able to audition in person, with casting, and therefore we had to settle for the classic Selftape, alas, if it hadn’t been for that I wouldn’t have made the film today.

I don’t remember what they were showing. My best friend, Cinzia Scaglione, is also a solitary and I remember that they suddenly said ok, let’s confirm the role. I burst into tears, and my friend Cinzia hugged me as if to say: Well done, did you see? You sweated a lot for this role and in the end, you made it. And from there the whole journey of the film began, which I will tell you about shortly.

Because I didn’t know either Dario o Monica, but soon after, when a relationship of mutual respect was established. Monica told me in confidence: “Look, if it hadn’t been for that self-tape I would never have chosen you. Why? Because, in any case, there is a lack of empathy, that intimacy that is established between the actor, the character, and the casting director during the audition phase. Then I had the opportunity because they allowed me to meet in person, to do an audition. But it’s something that left a strong impression on me, it was a phrase said by Monica when she called me back for the third time, she looked at me and said look: “I chose you because you were the only one who made my flesh tremble in my life,” which I and I didn’t understand at first, I told her, but for better or for worse? “It’s like, don’t you understand, I’m choosing you.” I was confused, about the first project I did as a lead, then knowing that I was chosen from a cast of actors who are just as good, for goodness sake. It passes over you, it’s an indescribable emotion.

o it was also like sweating during the post-lockdown period, I imagine the work done for filming and so on was quite diffi-

ell, look, I have to say that the production protected us from every point of view, in the sense of wherever we went. We always had someone from production looking after us. I remember perhaps the worst period regarding Covid, was in Budapest because, unlike Italy, Budapest took the COVID situation a little lightly, in fact many people went around without masks, you entered a shop, a bar, or a restaurant to take something and they were all, without masks and memory, looking at us like aliens. There was a guy at the counter of a bar who asked me, why do you Italians go around with masks? My answer was: well, why does Covid exist? And that boy said to me: Eh, are you stupid in Italy because you haven’t understood yet that it’s just the flu?

-ema There was a little bit of that. But whose side were you on, given what was happening in Italy, how could you pretend it was just the flu? I mean, unfortunately. Many people have lost the most important thing we have, which is life. And how

can you say yes? It’s true, the flu doesn’t count if we consider the first victims of Bergamo and we’re talking about 500 victims in the space of four days, 5 days, we cannot take such a situation lightly. Shortly after we saw what happened. Despite this, we continued to protect ourselves with masks, and disinfectants, respecting the safety distance and I must say that it was a difficult time, beautiful, exciting for the work we were doing, but equally difficult in many ways, however, we made it in the end.

A N

nd was it only filmed in Budapest or also in Italy?

o, we started with the first two weeks in Milan. Then we had a week off. Changes, positions, and so on. We moved to Rome, so two weeks in Milan, one. About 10 days, 12 days in Budapest, and then a week in Rome. Precisely because there were changes in location based on concessions. First Rome rather than Budapest and so on. So let’s say that there have been some changes in the location and covers.

A

nd the film deals with a rather current topic, in short...

S

o yes, I have to be honest about the film, my great satisfaction lies in the fact that I was confronted with a character light years away from me. So for an actor to play a character that doesn’t even belong to you is a challenge. He is

absurd and he is and it’s beautiful when you get a good result which is then appreciated by the public and beyond. The film is inspired by true events. So we detach ourselves from these situations to also embrace the theme of gender violence and given what the historical period is, with everything we hear today such as feminicides and so on, I must say that. I’m even more proud to have played that role because the film itself allows you to send a message, a very important message that has to do with gender violence and violence against women. Even the other evening, when we were awarded at the Deluxe Film Festival, where we received the award for best film and I received the award for best actor, I didn’t hesitate for a moment to spread what today is no longer a thought common but must become a mantra for everyone. And that is that in the face of violence against women or the face of violence against women or in the face of gender violence, tolerance must in any case be zero. And let’s always remember this when a woman says no is no.

W

here did you get the inspiration to be able to play a role so distant from you?

W

ow, great question, so basically. I won’t deny that I started seeing a lot of films, I had already seen many other things, I started to document myself through social media through streaming. I left the cinema to try to avoid what we had already seen and to build a Leonardo (which is the name of my character) to build a Leonardo that did not belong to something already seen. And I must tell you that I succeeded, but I did some good internal work. I made use of the collaboration of Dario and Monica, who are the director and screenwriter, among other things, they also co-directed the creation of this character together. But this is an individual, subjective work that they did, with each actor, that is, they carved out a space with each actor to build, to give you indications on directions and paths to follow. What to avoid instead? What to pursue with respect and tact? Because, in any case, the issue is very delicate. There is a risk of going off the rails. It’s a moment, a snap of the fingers, so they were very good at directing us, at the same time giving us carte blanche and then going to do a sort of skimming of the excesses.

A I

nd listen, if I may, without spoiling anything. There is one scene that gave you a lot of difficulty, more than the others, if it’s possible, without spoiling anything, let’s say without giving away. won’t tell you the whole story, but I can tell you the scene. I’m not saying that it destabilized me, but that I also feel, my voice betrays me a little in telling you that memory, was the moment in which Leonardo abuses Francesca, and Francesca as seen in the film, is a person who has had a past painful because he has suffered violence and sees in Leonardo the possibility of being able to start trusting men again. And it is Leonardo himself who gives her the final blow. So imagine the enormous interior work done by me and Francesca, and I remember that at the beginning this was perhaps one of the scenes we shot, the most, not only from a technical point of view for the cameras but also from an emotional point of view, because there was a moment when I hugged Francesca with the cameras off and I told her, I’m sorry for what I’m about to do and she replied:

Gianni, we are two actors, we are two professionals, do what you want listen.” There we let ourselves go and that scene was one of the most beautiful from an actor’s point of view, but also from a film point of view, one of the most dramatic, ugly, and heavy. But I repeat, we are all satisfied with the work done.

work that has brought you awards, best film, and best leading actor, we have made many improvements.

ow, who expected this? Yes, but above all because you can see when a director, a screenwriter, or an actor works on a film anyway. But let’s face it, the actor is vain, whether the director likes it or not, even if he is behind the camera he is equally vain but vain, in the good sense of the word. I mean, let’s do a job. We hope that this will be appreciated, but not out of a desire for visibility and notoriety. No, but why? We like to be appreciated for our work, for us. The desire to be appreciated and even more.

A Y

pplauded, appreciated. Does it also mean applauding yourself?

es, for appreciation in the sense, of public appreciation, I mean. Then when we learned about it at the beginning of the trip. Dario received a mention for directing, but Dario is behind the camera, he is a monster, he is an excellent director, and he is an excellent director of photography. He received a mention for his work Bea at the Dubai Film Festival. I call her Bea, because for me she has now become like a sister, both she and Beatrice Schiaffino, who plays Emanuelle, received the award for best actress at the Dubai Film Festival.

O C

f course, also because criticism is giving an excellent response to respect?

ritics, both Italian and foreign, are giving excellent feedback to the film. After the release in Italy, as before the release in Italy, it went to the Berlin Film Festival, where it was sold in 10 different foreign countries in Europe and

38

beyond. In fact, after its release in Italy, it was also released abroad and already the releases in Taiwan, Japan, and the United States meant that the production, as if by magic, received wonderful, unexpected reviews.

M B

agically, why?

ecause the idea that one of your projects lands abroad seems almost like a dream to you, and from abroad, where the industry is 10 times bigger than the Italian one, there is someone who reviews the film and then gives you those reviews? Some of them are video recordings made by critics, many others have been written on portals, the web, newspapers, and so on. I remember that the other evening, after receiving the award I began to read them all, I must have received about 10, 12, then I sent them to you and they were one more beautiful than the other, but since they didn’t stop only at the direction or the screenplay or acting, they were reviews that made the project go round. There was a linearity and balance in those reviews which, believe me, put you in a position where you can’t say Ah but... In short, I don’t know if I managed to explain the concept, it often happens that a film is reviewed and that film is judged only as technical-artistic or only ascribable to the historical period. This is what I like about these reviews received from abroad, not because they don’t do it in Italy, for goodness sake, but because in Italy we have excellent critics. But I noticed that abroad the opinions all follow the same line, in the sense. We start with technical criticism and then involve the actor’s interpretation subject to respect for the script and historical time. There is a complex but exhaustive linearity in all its parts.

-ema

S A S

o in short, they are just like saying also beautiful, constructive, even liked.

lot, a lot, for us actors it’s constructive feedback. It’s true, you took the words out of my mouth, they are constructive feedback.

ure, I guess well. So what can we say? In short, we left you when you had just finished a film and were in the planning phase, you were full of ideas for the future and we found you who, in short, have been rewarded. And now this film is going around the world anyway... Then IM Italian wishes you a happy new year, as well as new beautiful, interesting, intense projects that give you a lot of satisfaction. Then we will come to visit you again.

hank you, thank you 1000, thank you 1000. First of all, a little spoiler, I just finished shooting 1 nice authorial short film. Handsome. It was filmed in Calabria, the production is Calamazo. Mandala Chapter II By F. Guzzardi

Embracing Impermanence A world full of constant change, it is essential to remind ourselves that nothing is permanent. The ancient practice of creating mandalas provides a beautiful perspective on impermanence and encourages us to embrace the transient of life. Derived from the Sanskrit word for “circle,” mandala represents not only the cyclical nature of existence but also the impermanence of all things. Mandalas are intricate, geometric patterns that have been used in various cultures and religious traditions for centuries. They can be found in Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and even Native American cultures. Despite their different meanings and purposes across various contexts, one theme remains constant— the understanding that everything in life is destined to change.

- He means that this is a cursed land, which does not recognize its children. You have to go to Germany, France or America, why not? Sicily is still a land and only the sea moves, the sea does but you must not fall into this trap; they will tell you: the sun, the beaches, and other nonsense but you “futtitinni”, don’t care! Life is a perpetual movement, a movement, remember! Here, however, nothing moves and nothing will ever move; until one day the people will wake up but only to assassinate their rulers, and without understanding that we are the ones truly responsible. Yes, “futtitinni” but I was already 18 years old, with confused ideas among confused people. And I took a train a few months later, towards Germany, recommended by a friend for a position as a dishwasher in an Italian restaurant. And so here I am in Germany, Munich. beautiful city, kind people, and beautiful women. Yes,

the myth of blondes is unattainable for Sicilian men. Thus, thanks also to my not exactly displeasing physical appearance, I managed, without even wanting to, to attract fascinating and seductive women who took turns in my bed. This also helped me a lot with the male friends who followed me closely to get the blondes. I had already been practicing yoga for a few years, and I managed to find a space for my hour of daily meditation. I was a vegetarian but I preferred not to let it be known, because a plate of tomato pasta always went unnoticed. However, Sabine Jannusek did not go unnoticed at all. Fu forse la donna piu` bella che incontrai nella mia vita; seduta al bar di uno Sheraton hotel che avevo cominciato a frequentare su pressione di alcuni amici. She was perhaps the most beautiful woman I met in my life; she was sitting at the bar of a Sheraton hotel that I had

started frequenting under pressure from some friends. She looked at me insistently, with the air of a girl from a good family, spoiled and capricious, who had chosen her prey... And I willingly accepted the status of prey for one evening... but also for two. The bartender looked at me with a certain hatred, typical of someone who can’t distinguish charisma from arrogance. And that was my weapon, also considering that my German was impossible. I approached her to ask her to dance and she came towards me as we used to do with friends who haven’t seen each other for a long time. As we danced we put our lips together, promising to see each other again the following week. The bartender munched peanuts and I watched him sip a Campari.

ARTInterview by Teresa Cusano

W

e are here for IM Italian magazine, with Marco Alonzi, musician and Alessia Lombardi, poet, to talk about an artistic project that combines music and poetry. My first question is for Alessia, how did you meet and what inspired you to work together? I met Marco in Sora (despite having lived in Florence for ten years he has Sora origins); he was - and currently is - the cellist of the “I Colibrì” company, a Social Theater Association founded by his father, Giancarlo Alonzi, with whom I had agreed to work following a recommendation from my colleague Giulia Germani. Shortly before my official entry into the company, at the beginning of April 2023, I went to see one of their shows (an adaptation of the novel “One and fifty” by Maria Antonietta Rea). I had never seen a cello close and I remember that it struck me. I certainly could not have imagined that less than nine months later Marco would become my husband and that my ‘meta-literary’ ambition would materialize so quickly thanks to him. It was all wonderfully quick, unexpected... indeed, dazzling! Marco, what was your artistic path? Fortunately, music has always been there; it has been there from the beginning. During pregnancy, my father placed the famous headphones on mu mother’s belly to make me listen to Mozart. I do not know how many musical instruments my old house had. I was overwhelmed by them and so from before the age of eight I played with my little plastic guitar and tried to make something out of real instruments. My father was my first real contact with music – a bit like Hagrid with Harry Potter – not only because he had the healthy habit of playing CDs all day and of any style, even if mostly rock, but above all because during a rainy evening, when I was eight years old, he came home and made me listen to Led Zeppelin live at the Royal Albert Hall; at that moment I decided what I wanted to do, the musician, only that. My father enrolled me at the classical guitar course at the municipal school of Sora, followed first by Maestro Stefano Spallotta, then by Maestro Gianluigi Pizzuti, a journey that lasted eight years. I remember the afternoons when my father taught me to play the Beatles or Jethro Tull songs. In the end, however, Maestro Donato Cedrone arrived and, while promoting at the Facchini middle school in Sora, he let me try his cello; I fell in love with it and since then I have continued my studies as a cellist. Alessia, what is the Crow J & Neptune Mak project? “Crow J & Neptune Mak” is, essentially, a performance poetry project; very similar, rather, a direct descendant of spoken word. It is a project that inserts its own live show proposal – obviously new, original – into the dimension of a poetic concert for two voices – the “external” one of the story, the “internal”, secret one of the instrument – through a peculiar typology narrative in limen – between black literature, confessional poetry of American origins and raw contemporary visionariness; a profound, paradoxical dualism which finds in the genre of the suite (although contaminated, “mixed”) an effective concert solution for the creation of an intrinsic common thread to the linguistic and metalinguistic multiplicity of the interpreted texts.

M

arco, music doesn’t need words but, in this case, do your compositions go behind the verses or do the words envelop your compositions?

Ours is not a simplistic poetry show with any background music; ours is a project in which music and poetry, as in antiquity, are one; every poem has an unwritten part expressed by music: it is the classical “melologia”, a musical score or sound poetry in which words and notes are in symbiosis and those words must be accompanied only by those notes – like the “Persephone” or the Stravinsky’s “Histoire du soldat” or Schoenberg’s “Pierrot Lunaire”. Obviously in a small way, narrator and cello, although in some contexts the bass or the guitar is present. Alessia, you have participated in several poetry competitions and written some books, what impact does poetry have on people in the current historical context governed by image and cynicism? The poet Pierluigi Cappello wrote that “poetry has nothing to say, except its own heroic inadequacy”. Its impact, today, is the unsettling (and annoying, at times) one of truth, of revelation; it shows us the exact point at which our spirit has been pierced. Marco and Alessia, tell us a little bit about your performance for our readers and listeners who may be less experienced in this type of performance. Our live performances approach the ancient need for oral production, art and aedic technique, understood as a perceptive and imaginative experience, beyond and above the written word. The spectator will therefore find himself witnessing this curious “alchemical experiment”; through sound – the language capable of restoring the quality of expression produced by man – the common word is amplified to become arcane, to be decoded (and codified then, again) in listening in silence. Finally, dates and venues of your performances? We are working on eight shows – some are in preparation, others with dates already set – which will see the light from April onwards in libraries, bookshops, cinemas, theatres, schools and in the squares of Florence. The first is taken from the training/ re-educational experience that Alessia carried out teaching poetic and creative writing to inmates in the prisons of Rome, Naples and Rocca di Papa; their writings will become “Stories from Gattacielo”. In the second show we will bring to life all the poems written/dedicated to Florence by the poets who passed through the city, even if only for a short period; in the third we will tell in music the salient moments of the lives of Stravinsky, Leopardi, Mingus, Kafka through their letters. “Civil Bestiary”, our fourth show is, instead a fictional story, the story of two orphaned twins, separated at birth and they finally manage to find each other after crossing all Italy; the fifth transposes Cormac McCarthy’s last novel, “Stella Maris” into Partita n.2 “in re minore” by J.S.Bach adapted for cello. The sixth show is taken from Dante Alighieri’s “Vita Nova”; in the seventh we meet Dostoevsky’s “Memories from the Underground” and the Black Sabbath; the last, the most “courageous” offers a biography and poetic texts of the Icelandic poet J.K. Stefansson with songs by Chet Baker.

I remind you that this interview will appear on the IM Italian magazine of March 2024. In the meantime, I thank you for your availability and best wishes for the success of your project.

With two of the top jobs in politics now held by women, Italy has just become an instant case study in female leadership By IM Italian Team

In October final 12 months, Italy elected its first feminine prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, chief of the far-right Brotherhood of Italy. Now, the left-wing opposition Democratic Social gathering has elected its personal feminine chief for the primary time, Elly Schlein. Consequently, the nation, which is extremely conservative on gender equality, now has two feminine occasion leaders – one main the federal government and the opposite main the principle opposition occasion. The glass ceiling has been shattered: girls have reached the best workplaces in politics. Ladies have lengthy been underrepresented in Italian politics. In line with the World Financial Discussion board’s 2022 World Gender Hole Index, Italy ranks fortieth out of 146 nations when it comes to political gender equality. Solely about 31% of present MPs are girls – successfully the primary time the gender stability has fallen in 20 years. Ladies make up solely 22% of regional councilors and 15% of mayors. In the meantime, within the wider labor market, feminine participation barely reaches 50% – one

of many lowest ranges in Europe. All of which makes the rise of those two girls stunning. It sends a constructive message to future generations of ladies. They will clearly see that reaching the best ranges of the political spectrum is feasible far proper and much left. Meloni and Schlein are at reverse ends of the spectrum, one on the far proper and the opposite on the far left. Neither aspect is inclined to compromise and each dabble in populism. They take very completely different positions politically and have completely different management kinds. Meloni stated she wish to be known as “Il Presidente” by males as an alternative of “La Presidente”, successfully selecting to not rejoice the truth that a lady turned prime minister for the primary time. They take very completely different positions politically and have completely different management kinds. Meloni stated she wish to be known as “Il Presidente” by males as an alternative of “La Presidente”, successfully selecting to not rejoice the truth that a lady turned prime minister for the primary time. “La Presidente” makes use of

technically appropriate (and extra progressive) terminology in her case, however she prefers to distance herself from any feminist interpretation. Schlein was additionally controversial, however on the reverse excessive. She expresses radical intersectional feminist views and is bisexual with a feminine companion. Not solely did she speak about these identities, she led her management marketing campaign by speaking about them, famously saying at a rally: I’m a lady, I really like one other lady, I’m not a mom, however I’m nonetheless a lady. We aren’t dwelling wombs, however human beings with rights.

From a social and fnancial viewpoint, Schlein and Meloni had nothing in frequent. Schlein prioritized minority and civil rights. She favors a “citizen’s earnings” that would supply a assured earnings for the poorest. She additionally opposed the Employment Act, a labor market reform regulation launched by Matteo Renzi’s former center-left authorities that made it simpler to fireplace employees. BENITO MUSSOLINI has called the people who work ‘the salt of the Fatherland,’ the strength and substance of the nation. He was born in one of the most proletarian provinces of Italy, where the whole life of the people is made up of hard, tenacious, and productive work. In Romagna, all wealth comes from the land and the sea.’My forebears,’ writes Mussolini, ‘were peasants who worked the land, and my father was a blacksmith who beat the red-hot iron on the anvil. Sometimes a youngster I helped my father in his humble labor: I have now the far more arduous task of molding souls.’In the broad plain of the Po valley between the Alps, the Apennines, and the Adriatic, the very fertile southern area is characterized by the frank nature of the inhabitants and their dialect: the Romagna is a country where the people live in harmony with the seasons, amid sowing and reaping, faithful to the land which they seldom leave to seek their fortunes elsewhere.
