Music
Important ways
music education BENEFITS STUDENTS ReseaRcheRs increasingly are finding that “do-re-mi” may be just as essential to children’s development as “A-B-C.” Music education, which was once required in the classroom, is increasingly absent from school curriculums. However, proponents feel there should be a greater push for musical education as part of school curricula because of the many benefits students reap from music education.
Taps into multiple skill sets Music participation goes beyond playing an instrument or singing notes from a page. Experts at Music Together, an early childhood music development program, say that participating in music education involves many different skills, including listening, vision, fine motor skills, problem solving, and utilizing large and small muscle groups.
Transformative effects A growing body of research points to music for its transformative effects on youngsters. Participation in music education may help improve communication skills, foster better memory and help children focus their attention more effectively, according to the instrument retailer Zing Instruments. Music may provide the common ground to unite children in pursuit of a common goal.
Improves language skills Neurobiologist Dr. Nina Kraus participated in “The Harmony Project,” which involved a series of experiments among second and third graders. Dr. Kraus discovered conclusively that music enhanced sound processing and cognitive skills (memory and attention). Music helps students develop the left 6
EDUCATION GUIDE 2022
side of the brain, which is known for processing language. A 2014 study by Arete Music Academy found children who study music tend to have larger vocabularies and more advanced reading skills than those who do not participate in music education.
More consistent attendance rates The National Association for Music Education determined that schools that offer music education have better attendance rates (93.3 per cent) than those that don’t (84.9 per cent).
Higher grades A study in The Journal for Research in Music Education found that students who participated in excellent music programs scored higher on tests in mathematics and English/language than students enrolled in lower-quality music programs or none at all. Researchers concluded there is a correlation between music education and better retention of material.
Support from parents and teachers Both educators and parents strongly believe that music education has a positive impact on overall academic performance, indicates NAMM Foundation and Grunwald Associates LLC. They also feel that budget cuts in music education or deficits in supplies and insufficient allocation of resources is detrimental to students
Increased IQ scores An experiment published in a 2004 issue of Psychological Science conducted by E. Glenn Schellenberg at The University of Toronto found that, over the course of nine months, six-year-old participants who were given piano and voice lessons tested on average three IQ points higher than those who had drama lessons only or no lessons at all. Music education plays an important role in the lives of students, paying dividends that might surprise even those devoted to ensuring school curriculums include it. Metro Creative

Volunteering
How to help kids find suitable opportunities Volunteering is a great way for people to give back to their communities. Many people give back out of a desire to help others, but those same individuals may acknowledge that volunteering benefits volunteers most of all. Various studies examining the benefits of volunteering on volunteers have been conducted in recent years. Seniors and retirees who volunteer often cite the sense of purpose that giving back provides. But it’s not just adults who benefit from volunteering. In fact, a report from the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension noted that volunteerism promotes positive citizenship among youth, contributes to youths’ identity development and increases their self-esteem. The authors of the report also note that volunteering helps youth develop empathy for others. Parents who want their children to reap the rewards of volunteering can try various strategies to help youngsters find an opportunity to lend a hand.
Utilize the internet The Internet is a great resource for aspiring volunteers. VolunteerMatch.org partners with more than 130,000 nonprofit organizations to help them find the volunteers they rely on to meet their missions. Volunteering opportunities listed on Volunteer Match are broken into categories such as Animals, Arts & Culture and even Children & Youth, making this an ideal place for aspiring do-gooders to start their volunteering journey.
Speak with school officials A child’s school is another great place to discover volunteering organizations. Extracurricular activities like school10 EDUCATION GUIDE 2022
sponsored clubs may organize volunteering excursions throughout the school year. Educators, including school principals, teachers, and guidance counsellors, also can help parents find the right volunteering opportunities for their children.
Speak with children
Some youngsters may already have strong ideas on the types of volunteering activities that interest them. For example, avid surfers and nature enthusiasts may want to volunteer with their local parks system to help keep beaches and parks clean. The more enthusiastic children are about a volunteering opportunity, the more likely they are to stick with it for the long haul. Volunteering benefits young people in myriad ways, especially when kids find an opportunity, they can be passionate about.
Parents can encourage youngsters to offer their input regarding volunteering.

Parenting
Parenting and caring for a
special needs child THE DAY a child is born is one of the happiest days in parents’ lives. New parents understand they have things to learn and that there will be challenges along the way. Those challenges could be more immediate for parents of special needs children. Active Parenting Publishers says “special needs” refers to a physical or mental health condition that occurs with development or as the result of an injury. Examples of special needs may include children with learning or behavioural conditions such as dyslexia or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Children with autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, multiple sclerosis, or paraplegia also may fall under the special needs umbrella. One of the key challenges parents of special needs children may face is providing care and assistance without making the child overly dependent on his or her parents. Another challenge may be carving out time to decompress from the role of caregiver. The following tips can help parents and other caregivers who provide for children with special needs.
Ask for help Parents and caregivers should not hesitate to ask for help when raising special needs children. Caregivers must overcome any misconception that they will be a burden if they seek support. Seek help from friends, family members or support groups.
Planning is often key when parenting a child with Release the hormone special needs. bonding Researchers have found Learning what that the hormone oxytocin is released when one perworks for son experiences empathy others may help for another, creating a sense well-being and trust beparents become oftween the two people, acmore effective cording to Active Parent Publishers. together more successfully.
Build on strengths Stimulate independence in your child while resisting the urge to reach in and do everything for him or her. This approach requires patience. Children – even special needs children – need to struggle to a point to develop certain skills and become as independent as pos-
sible. Celebrate all achievements, no matter how small.
Establish rules and routines Rules and routines provide something the child can expect each day. This will encourage a sense of security.
Make contingency plans Life may be unpredictable but have a few options in your back pocket. A contingency plan may include a list of go-to locations if you learn a venue isn’t wheelchair accessible or if a child is bothered by loud noises or lights. Planning is often key when parenting a child with special needs. Learning what works for others may help parents become more effective caregivers.

Signs of
ADHD in people of all ages Attention-deficit hyperActivity disorder affects millions of people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that a 2016 survey of parents found that 6.1 million children, which equated to roughly 9.4 percent of the childhood population that year, had been diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD is the most prevalent childhood psychiatric disorder in Canada. ADHD does not just affect children. A 10-year study published in JAMA Network Open found that ADHD diagnoses among adults have been growing four times faster than those among children in the United States.
People concerned about ADHD should know that there is no single test to diagnose it. Furthermore, other psychiatric conditions or learning disabilities can produce similar symptoms as ADHD. The health and wellness information site Healthline says ADHD is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that can affect various components of daily life. The Mayo Clinic reports that ADHD can cause persistent problems, such as difficulty paying attention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behavior, in both adults and children. ADHD can affect relationships, academic performance and even people’s careers. 18 EDUCATION GUIDE 2022
People concerned about ADHD should know that there is no single test to diagnose it. Furthermore, other psychiatric conditions or learning disabilities can produce similar symptoms as ADHD. Health care providers use the guidelines in the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, fifth edition (DSM-5) to help diagnose ADHD. Key criteria for the condition include six or more of the following symptoms for children and five or more for those ages 17 and older: • Inattention, which includes not holding attention on tasks or play activities. Failure to pay close attention to details or making careless mistakes. Often the person has trouble organizing tasks and activities. • Hyperactivity that can affect the ability to take part in activities quietly. One may act as if driven by a motor, and
often squirms or fidgets. A person may have trouble waiting turns or keeping emotions in check. • Impulsivity which can mean talking excessively or blurting out an answer before a question has been completed. Adults may have a hot temper or low frustration tolerance. Impulsivity can lead to risky behavior or substance and alcohol misuse. • Daydreaming can occur as well, as not all symptoms of ADHD include loudness and being rambunctious. Some people may disappear into themselves and be quieter and less involved than they once were. ADHD is a medical condition that is being diagnosed more readily, helping adults and children get treatment that can help them lead full lives. Metro Creative

What is
Montessori education? By Jen WATSon Montessori education is a classroom strategy that prioritizes self-led learning over simply spoonfeeding children with facts. In this model, children choose their own learning goals and work at their own pace. Teachers lead and guide, but ultimately follow the child’s lead. Montessori education originated when acclaimed Italian scientist and educator, Dr. Maria Montessori, was invited to create a childcare center in San Lorenzo, a poor area in Rome. Her vision was to help disadvantaged, unschooled children receive a quality education. Over time, she developed unique educational materials to help children follow their curiosity and succeed in the classroom. Dr. Montessori found great academic success in San Lorenzo, and her methods are still used today.
5 core components of Montessori education To be recognized as a quality classroom by the American Montessori Society (AMS), modern-day schools must follow the five core components of the Montessori Method: 1. Trained Teachers: Teachers certified by the AMS help maintain the rigor and integrity of the Montessori Method. 2. Multi-Age Classrooms: Classrooms enrol students in three-year age gaps to foster peer mentorship and leadership. 3. Montessori Learning Materials: True Montessori classrooms use the materials originally developed by Dr. Montessori. 22 EDUCATION GUIDE 2022
4. Child-Directed Work: Learning is selfdirected, which encourages intrinsic motivation and long-term focus. 5. Uninterrupted Learning Periods: Extended periods of “free-choice” encourage students to follow their curiosity and natural desire to learn.
Benefits of a Montessori education With a Montessori education, children follow their own curiosities, passions and interests. Several benefits come with this self-led learning, including: • Freedom and Independence: In Montessori classrooms, children direct education. You may see children choosing when to take snack breaks, when to work alone or in teams, or what lessons to start. This freedom fosters independence and helps children learn how to lead. • Confidence: Since learning is self-directed, children follow intrinsic motivation to learn what interests them most. Pursuing their own passions and accomplishing goals instills confidence. • Accountability: Learning is selfpaced, so children can get a natural sense of consequences. If work is put off one day, children can see they aren’t making progress toward goals, and vice versa. In this way, children learn accountability to accomplish their goals. • Intellectual Development Through Play: Scientists recognize that the most intelligent species are the ones that play. Playing is integral to children’s learning – in language development,
social skills, intellectual and emotional intelligence. Montessori classrooms encourage children to learn through playing, such as with puzzles, games or hands-on activities. Want to bring some of the benefits of a Montessori education home? Try these real estate vocabulary flashcards that encourage children to build financial literacy through play. Nearly half of parents show some reluctance in talking to children about money, but building financial vocabulary can be invaluable for children. Children as young as two who developed larger vocabularies were: • More likely to go to college, invest, and own homes when older • Better at self-regulating behavior • Less likely to show anxiety. Mental health
Schools and Mental Health By DR. DAVID B. HARlEy, ROBERT lAND ACADEMy
If there Is one thing that the last two years of the pandemic and its attack upon our physical health has taught us, it is the importance of mental health. Nowhere has this been more apparent than the effects upon our children and the growing disengagement from school both socially, emotionally, and intellectually by significant numbers of students–especially boys. Remote learning has taken its toll and continues to do so not merely in terms of its immediate impact but also in terms of the downward spiral that it has initiated with longstanding implications. COVID may have brought the problem in focus, but it has not created this problem – it exacerbated an existing problem. At the beginning of the 20th century, the British philosopher and mathematician Bertrand Russell wrote, “Men understand best what most interests them, and their interests are derived from their emotions.” From this statement it can also be inferred that if understanding is derivative from emotions, lack of understanding is equally so. The emotional well-being of students provides the essential foundation for their successful education. Intellectual understanding, as well as the absorption of knowledge, is very much determined by the emotional engagement in those processes. The interplay between intellect and emotion determines both functionality and dysfunctionality. The last decades have seen an evergrowing problem of boys disengaging from school reflected by the growing number of boys in special and modified academic programs, requiring behavioural intervention and being diagnosed 24 EDUCATION GUIDE 2022
with learning deficiencies, as well as the seemingly ever decreasing number of boys entering university as opposed to girls. Approaching these issues from the point of addressing learning from an intellectual point of view is far from adequate. Clearly what is needed is emotional support not in the form of guaranteeing success or eliminating competition, but rather in building the confidence to take on challenges. In environments in which boys find no validation, self-invalidation is sure to follow along with other issues such a depression and anxiety disorders. Encouraging and empowering our youth to take on problems constructively is what a therapeutic approach is all about. It involves developing the resilience to tackle problems through encouragement and counselling, coupled with the abilities to self-regulate and re-
flectively assess actions relative to their desired results and readjust accordingly. If it doesn’t work, why do you do it? Are you the captain of your own ship or merely a passenger? There are at present good grounds to argue that all teacher training should involve a working knowledge of cognitive behavioural therapy and where possible, dialectical behavioural therapy. The equating of school performance with ability is a poor measure of the student but it is a practice that often results in the student believing that they are what they see on a report card. A sense of hopelessness is easy to develop and become the self-limiting measure of one’s own worth. The attitude towards intellectual capacity should be viewed in terms of physical fitness where exercise, routine and effort yield results and targeted objectives once met will be exceeded.
Esprit Academy is an enriched school that supports gifted and highly intelligent learners in grade 1-8 through individualized programming which allows us to support learning challenges that may also be part of students’ academic profile. Our small community is supportive and inclusive, allowing students to enjoy their school journey. Using the Ontario Curriculum, we expand and individualize topics, encourage hands-on learning and our mixed grade classes allow for students to be successful while teaching and learning together.

Financial literacy
Mydoh
Financial Literacy: Let’s start with our kids By GAuRAv KAPooR As A kid, my parents taught me values that prepared me for success – and saving and planning was a priority for them. Their dedication instilled values and a sense of confidence that remains today. This is what inspired the creation of Mydoh, a money management app and Smart Cash Card that enables parents to help their kids build good, long-lasting money habits. Life has drastically changed over the past two years, causing a dynamic shift in spending, and saving. We’ve all had to adapt to new digital spending platforms. Rather than going instore, people prefer to shop online. Spending money has never been easier, which makes learning about financial literacy that much more important, especially for our children.
Financial literacy starts with our kids Research shows that interactive activities are six times more likely to help students learn. Like any skill, the best way to learn something is by doing it every day. This is especially true for one’s financial literacy and parents are integral to the everyday learning process for kids. A 2020 survey of 15-year-old students found that teens who talked about finances with their parents scored 33 points higher in financial literacy than those who did not. Did you know that by age three, children can grasp basic money concepts? By age seven, money habits are already set. It’s clear that learning about personal finance at a young age is an asset for the next generation. 26 EDUCATION GUIDE 2022
Parents are the key No matter what your starting point or your own understanding of finance is, talking about money within the family is necessary to set your kids up for future success. Today, it has become easier for parents to teach their kids stronger money (spending and saving) habits and have fun while doing it. All it takes is a few taps on their phone, using real-life experiences such as chores, tasks, and allowances. My daughter is under four years old, so all I do is show her how the app works and start talking to her about money. While the experience might not make a huge difference at her age now, it does contribute to instilling important values for the future, and the basics of financial literacy.
Technology use at its best According to recent research from MediaSmarts, parents report that about
36 per cent of their 10 to 13-year-olds spend three hours or more per day using digital devices for reasons unrelated to schoolwork or learning. The benefit of technology, devices and digital learning tools is that we can use them at any time, to enhance learning with interactive experiences. We’ve tapped into that potential with Mydoh Play, which makes learning about money easy for kids with fun facts and trivia. Financial literacy is not limited to finance-related occupations, nor is it something that you only have to manage when you become an adult. It should be taught to everyone, from a young age, so that the skills, confidence, and the eagerness to learn are there throughout adult life. Check out Mydoh for yourself and see how easy and fun it can be to teach your kids financial skills that will set them up for future success. mydoh.ca Gaurav Kapoor is the CEO and cofounder of Mydoh

When it’s time to call in a
tutor
Busy schedules, hybrid learning, and demanding coursework have affected students’ academic performance over the last year-plus. The months since a pandemic was declared in March of 2020 have been unlike any other and confronting the academic challenges of the pandemic may have adversely affected some students’ grades. A recent report from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Research and Strategic Improvement in Virginia found the number of middle and high school students with two or more failing marks increased by 83 percent in the first quarter of the 20202021 school year compared to the year prior. But students’ grades may slide, or they may find certain schoolwork overly challenging even in normal years. Since many parents have not seen a periodic table or had to solve high school math problems in decades, tutors may be just what students need to regain their academic footing. Failing grades are not necessarily the most notable indicator that students can benefit from the services of a tutor. The Princeton Review says 25 per cent of high school students say homework is their biggest source of stress, and homework progress can help parents determine if it’s time to call in a tutor. Students who find their homework is taking too long, particularly double or triple the amount of time it once required, may need some extra help. Here are some additional indicators that a tutor may be needed. • Declining test scores: Some students are simply poor test takers, but a gradual or sudden decline in test scores may indicate students are having trou28 EDUCATION GUIDE 2022
ble mastering material. Teachers can pinpoint if certain concepts are overly challenging to students and notify parents if there are any problem areas. • Poor time management or focus: Students who are struggling may have their attention drift or they put off doing tasks because they don’t grasp the assignments. • Lack of homework help at home: Parents may have prior commitments during the times of day when their children are doing homework. Even when parents are home, they may discover that the concepts covered in school are not being taught in the ways parents learned them and they may have difficulty assisting their children. Tutors can step in and help students when parents cannot. • Learning disorder: Certain students learn differently from others due to a diagnosed or undiagnosed learning disorder. A child who is struggling with
reading, phonics, spelling, and writing may have dyslexia, according to the tutoring experts at Dyslexia Practitioner NJ. Tutors who specialize in learning disorders can assess and address learning conflicts and tailor instructions in ways that can help students overcome those challenges. • Students “shut down” or say they “hate” school: Disinterest in school or expressions of hating going to school may be indicative of academic struggles in the classroom, says the Princeton Review. Some students get so frustrated they simply give up. Tutors can solve learning puzzles and help get students back on track and reignite their interest in school. Tutors can be valuable resources for students who need some one-on-one attention to master general learning concepts or reinforce skills for key tests or projects Metro Creative
Contest
Putting pen to paper: Ripple Foundation’s creative writing contest for kids CREATIVITY is a hidden tool that if teased out of youth, holds the power to inspire inquisitive minds, boost confidence and unlock new ways of approaching challenges to build promising futures for the next generation. One Canadian charity, Ripple Foundation, is making waves and striving to unearth hidden creative talent through its youth programs, designed to inspire a love for reading and writing, nurture creative writing skills while boosting confidence among youngsters. As well as weekly virtual Write It Workshops designed to teach the key principles of creative writing, the charity holds an annual Kids Write 4 Kids creative writing challenge - a writing contest now celebrating its 10th birthday. The competition welcomes budding young writers in grades 4-8 from across Canada to explore all parameters of their creativity and put pen to paper to be in with a chance of becoming published authors before reaching high school. From poetry collections to short stories to non-fictional works, any literary creation can be in with a chance of winning if submitted by March 31, 2022. All entries are judged by a panel of professionals, including editors, authors and faces from the publishing world. Over the years, these have included award-winning authors such as Kit Pearson, Robert Paul Weston, Dan Bar-el and Tim Wynne-Jones, CBC Books and Canada Reads’ associate producer, as well as editors from The Globe and Mail and Toronto Star. Alongside winners from previous years, they all come together to decide who will become Ripple Foundation’s next child author. To date, 19 books have been published in paperback and ebook editions,
available to buy on Amazon, Google Play, iBookstore and Overdrive. 100% of proceeds from sales benefit the winners’ charity of choice. “Year in, year out, myself and the panellists are completely blown away by the untapped talent we have in communities all over Canada,” said Ivy Wong, Founder of Ripple Foundation. “We hope to cultivate confidence in kids through our programs by finding their voice and expressing their ideas by having them create a contest entry that they are genuinely proud of, knowing the prize will benefit a charity of their choice.” In 2020-2021, Ripple Foundation received 685 entries; a record-breaking number of submissions since the con-
test kicked off. Taking the crowns last year’s contest are winners Sumal Ashfaq (grade 8) with the poetry collection, The Wonder of Words, and Olivia Harrison (grade 8), with the short story, Learning to Fly. All 2021 proceeds will be donated to their chosen charity, Operation Smile. Applicants are encouraged to attend Ripple Foundation’s virtual Write It Workshops, which are free online sessions geared towards teaching the key principles of story writing, to help them prepare their creative submissions to the best of their ability.
