moving electronics BY CHUCK RESNICK
L
et’s face it – your electronic devices make the world go round, and in the moving business, we realize how important those items are to families. One of the most common things we’re asked is how to transport electronics safely, especially bigscreen TVs. During a move, whether it’s across town or across Canada, it is important to give these items special treatment so they arrive in one piece and in good working order. The best advice we have for accomplishing this goal requires some forethought: to keep the original boxes and foam spacers the electronic items came in. That is truly the safest method for moving them. Of course, people rarely keep these boxes, so at Two Men and a Truck Canada, we have specialty boxes and crates designed specifically to move big-screen TVs safely. People who do their own packing and moving should be aware of how easy it is to damage one of these units. Spending a few dollars extra to purchase or rent one of these special boxes can make all the difference. They can ac-

It’s far too chaotic on moving day to be trying to find any instruction manuals. The best plan when preparing for your move is to take the TVs off the walls yourself ahead of time and have them ready to be packaged properly. Here’s a tip for anyone disassembling electronics for a move. Get your digital or phone camera and take photos of the wiring connections on the backs of the TVs, cable boxes, DVD players and the like. When it comes time to reassemble them, it will be much easier to reference how they were set up originally, saving time, stress and frustration.

We have specialty boxes designed specifically for them that can be bought separately. If you choose not to go that route, then surround the unit with anti-static bubble wrap, and again, place it into an appropriate sized box. And here’s a handy tip: pack the associated hardware with it. Place the mouse, keyboard, power cord, scanner, printer cables, etc. all into the same box. When these cartons arrive at your new digs, you’ll be very glad you did! ■

how insurance works
W
hile it may seem complex, insurance is really quite simple: The payments (or premiums) of the many, pay for the losses of a few. Your premiums go into a large pool, if you will, at your insurance company. The claims of the few are paid from that pool. Because there are more people contributing to the pool than there are making claims, there is always enough to pay the claims – even large single claims like when someone is permanently disabled as a result of a car collision,

or many smaller claims like those resulting from a natural disaster. (The 1998 ice storm that hit parts of Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick resulted in an estimated 700,000 claims for damage totalling $1.4 billion.) However, large disasters (such as the ice storm) do come close to emptying the pool.
draw to pay claims. Some of your premiums are used by your insurance company to buy reinsurance – insurance for insurance companies. Sometimes losses are so big – like those resulting from an earthquake – that there is no way an insurance company can cover the costs. Reinsurance is an extra layer of protection against large losses.

The difference between the premiums and claims, in this case $14 billion, is used by the companies to pay salaries and taxes ($6.2 billion in 2005), and to cover the overhead costs (such as electricity bills) of running a business. It is also used to pay the administrative costs of settling a claim.

and the premiums of others are based on how much money the insurance companies think they will need to pay the coming year’s claims. Your premiums do not build up over the years – unlike the premiums for some types of life insurance.
how premiums are calculated Within reasonable limits, some of which are prescribed by law, your premium is calculated to reflect the probability that you will make a claim – that is, that you will draw funds from the insurance pool. Those who are unlikely to draw from the pool pay less than those who are more likely to draw from it.
Insurers take many factors into consideration to determine the likelihood that you will make a claim. A common misconception is that a policy holder who has never made a claim should pay less, little or nothing for insurance. While it is true that past claims history is important, a more reliable indicator of how likely a person or business is to make a claim is the statistical group to which he/she/it belongs.
industry earnings Insurance companies generally do not make money on the premiums gathered from policyholders. In 2005, insurance companies paid more than $21 billion in claims while tak-
Insurance pays for only those types of losses described in your contract. It is very important that you read your policy and/or talk to your insurance representative about what you are covered for and what you’re not. Insurance will not pay for every problem that you may encounter, nor is it a maintenance contract. Insurance is generally intended – and priced accordingly – to help policyholders cope with the financial consequences of unpredictable events that are “sudden and accidental.” If, for example, you live on a floodplain by a river, flooding of your property in the spring is not sudden or accidental; it is inevitable and, therefore, uninsurable. The Insurance Bureau of Canada offers information for consumers to help make them aware of their insurance needs and assist them in understanding the types of insurance available. They are the national industry association representing Canada’s private home, car and business insurers. Its member companies represent 90 per cent of the property and casualty insurance market in Canada. For more information visit ibc.ca. ■

5 fun
summer ideas for kids and parents
T
he warmer weather means it’s time for exploring and adventures, especially after spending so much time cooped up indoors. Here are a few creative ways to do family favourites this summer:
take a neighbourhood tour Try rediscovering an area in your city or town and experiencing it with new eyes. Look for self-guided walking tours online where you can learn about its history and neat facts. Or make a scavenger hunt game out of it, getting everyone to try to be the first to spot some graffiti art, a purple car or a special landmark. Whoever wins can get an extra scoop of ice cream when you visit the local parlour at the end of the day.

check out a drive-in attraction Who says drive-ins are old school? They’re making a comeback as a safer way to enjoy activities that typically involve crowds in closed spaces. Look for a theatre near you screening the latest Hollywood release or an old classic. Other drive-in options now available include comedy shows and concerts. Pack some cozy blankets and your favourite snacks for a budget-friendly family evening.
the trip and camp out in your own backyard — the kids will have just as much fun and it’ll be less work for parents. Plan fun activities, like camping charades, crafts with nature and glow-in-the-dark bowling.
camp under the stars near or far
enjoy the journey on a road trip
Camping is super popular this summer, but there should still be a few openings left at a national or provincial park that’s a bit further afield or less in demand. Or save yourself
See new places in a safer way with an in-province day trip that’s all about the journey. Schedule stops at outdoor landmarks or attractions and plan to stop at fun local takeout spots

that you pick together as a family. Save money by getting more out of your gas with a high-efficiency fuel like Synergy Supreme. Available at Esso stations, the premium fuel helps keep your engine three times cleaner for more kilometres per tank compared to gasoline meeting minimum Canadian government standards in port-fuel injected engines. Actual benefits are based on continuous use and may vary depending on vehicle type, driving style and gasoline previously used.
visit a new community park Spend an afternoon at a park you don’t normally go to, pointing out any new trees, plants and birds to your kids. You’ll be surprised how exciting a different playground or sport facility can feel. You can even bring activities for the kids and your laptop to get some work done on a weekday afternoon for a break in your usual routine. ■

mi c rowaves: the underdogs of cooking appliances F
ound in millions of kitchens, the microwave oven is the unsung hero of the cooking arsenal. When not used as a bread box, the underestimated appliance is mostly trusted for reheating leftovers or boiling a cup of water. But it can accomplish much more – all while maintaining more nutritional value in foods than other cooking methods. Because microwaves penetrate food quickly without the addition of much water, there’s less time for vitamins and minerals to break down. Research published in the Journal of Food Science showed that, compared to boiling, pressure cooking and baking, microwave cooking maintains the highest levels of antioxidants in various vegetables including beans, asparagus and spinach.
Microwaves are proving to be the heroes we all need when it comes to maximizing nutritional value and reducing cook time, and with maxedout parents and students juggling work and studies, it’s time to use them to their full power. Here are some tips to ensure success when cooking from scratch in your microwave:
cover it Trap steam by covering the dish with wax paper or a plate while heating. In addition to distributing heat evenly, it will prevent your food from drying.
find the hot spot Every microwave has areas where the food heats faster. To find your microwave’s hot spot, nuke a plate of marshmallows covered for 50
seconds. The areas that puff first are your hot spots.
add flavour Like stovetop cooking, flavour is key to delicious food. Add lemon, herbs, spices or a few dashes of your favourite hot sauce before cooking for a meal that packs a punch.
less water = more vitamins Use as little water as possible to maximize flavour and nutritional value.
never trust the timer Different foods heat differently. Plus, every microwave has different power. While you want to follow recipe instructions, stop your cooking time to stir midway through and rotate the food for even heat distribution. ■ — News Canada
