The dos and don’ts of off campus living during a pandemic h, living away from home. No parents, roommates, and a pandemic – wait a minute – what? Yeah, 18 months later, and we’re still at this. This year isn’t an ordinary one, and that means the way that you’re going to be living with your roommates will require communication and a plan. Beyond getting vaccinated, what are the best practices when living in a housing accommodation with others during a pandemic? Here are our suggested do’s and don’ts: DO: Ensure that everyone is on the same page about the importance of socializing only with your household. If this is going to change, it’s important that everyone is made aware. DON’T: Have guests over that don’t live in your household. It’s not worth the drama, trust us. Yes, we know the person you matched with on Tinder is a snack – FaceTime them. DO: Keep a tidy home and make sanitizing and disinfecting part of your daily habits. DON’T: Share a hand towel; germs, even on clean hands, live here. Wet towels act as a breeding ground. Make sure each roommate has their own set. DO: Respect boundaries and the space. With less time at parties and

gatherings, and more time at home, it’s imperative that you’re not encroaching on communal spaces or creating an uncomfortable environment that doesn’t fit everyone. DON’T: Forget to make hand washing regularly part of your new norm. Yeah, singing happy birthday twice is annoying, but so is putting yourself and others needlessly at risk. DO: Use headphones when you’re studying, on a Zoom class call, or working in a communal space. Your roommates don’t need your background noise. DON’T: Forget that there’s a good chance your roommate is on camera. You don’t want to be the star in a TikTok video that goes viral for doing something outlandish. DO: Establish quiet hours. Your roommates are likely to be your best friends for the next few months, and while that means there’s a good chance you’ll get up to shenanigans, that doesn’t mean it’s a party 24/7. Establish hours for down time. TALK THROUGH BIG-TICKET PURCHASES When making important big-ticket purchases, you don’t need to go it alone. Whether it’s a car or a new piece of furniture, consulting friends or family is a great way to get a gut-check on what you can afford and gain some much-needed perspective on the best places to buy and how much you should be paying.
CONSIDER RESALE VALUE If there’s even a remote chance that you’ll upgrade or get rid of an item in the future, buy-and-sell websites like Kijiji or eBay could be your best friend. By looking up the resale value of various brands

and models before a purchase it’s possible to get a better sense of the product’s value based on future returns.
SPEND WITHIN YOUR MEANS Debt is a major hurdle and it can snowball quickly. If you’re unsure about your ability to pay off purchases, spending from a no-fee bank account rather than a credit card may be a safer bet. Some banking products have no monthly fees and even earn loyalty points on everyday purchases.
EVALUATE COST PER USE Another helpful way to think about spending is on a cost-per-use basis. To calculate it, simply divide the cost of the purchase over the anticipated number of uses and you’ve got a brand-new way to look at the product’s value. You might be surprised to find that a more expensive item that lasts longer represents better value, or that a new board game costs less per play than your streaming service. ●
