We’re nearly a decade old and if we do say so ourselves, that’s quite a feat for a Malaysian-run publication founded on humble aspirations: championing good workplace design and establishing an international readership in the course of doing so.
D
esign, people and craftsmanship go together like peas in a pod. Here at Office Concept, we’ve made it our ongoing mission to bring this to the fore by showcasing projects, designers and brands that, in our opinion, go above and beyond the standard creative brief. Almost ten years into the game and it’s still no less than thrilling to do what we do. My infinite gratitude goes out to our readers, supporters and talented collaborators. Without each of you, the magazine wouldn’t be what it is today: Asia Pacific’s premier print platform for office interiors and products. On that note, I’d always like to take this opportunity to announce that we’ll be expanding our distribution to Vietnam come next February and are elated to be adding this up-and-coming design hub to our growing network. With this particular issue, I’d like to convey my thanks to Kelvin & Frank Reid for letting us showcase its stellar interior design projects. A Singaporean firm on the rise, KFR’s young directors lets us in on makes good design tick: an integrated way of thinking that takes into account user experience, functionality and sustainability. Curious? Dive in and find our more. We hope you’ll enjoy the following pages. As usual, they have been prepared with care and with you, our dear readers, specifically in mind. Until next time…

SWAY WITH ME
LONG STORY
FIXER UPPER
For POSH Design Lab, office furniture should be a life-enhancing experience. Activity, the studio’s new office chair design for Herman Miller, takes this sentiment to heart. Made to accommodate constant human activity, every part of this flexible chair has been engineered with motion in mind. Special features, including a sliding seat, an adaptable tilting mechanism and Activeback, a lightweight backrest with enhanced support, make this piece an indispensible work companion.
With the aim of reintroducing the bench back into domestic eating areas, German brand Girsberger has debuted Permesso. Designed by Kurt Müller and Daniel Leist, this new and improved spin on the freestanding piece is an impressive study in simplicity and lightness. Supported by a rounded or angular frame of chromium-nickel steel, Permesso’s upholstered seat and backrest appear as strikingly suspended horizontal forms, comfortably propping up the sitter and any other accompaniments.
Geared explicitly towards young high-tech companies with a feel for cutting edge aesthetics, Hack is an innovative table system that renders the traditional desk obsolete. Designed by Konstantin Grcic, the system, a series of matching units defined by raw wood paneling, gives the impression of an experimental project in the making. Portable and easy to dismantle, the height-adjustable Hack incorporates a sit-stand option as well as defined niches for work and relaxation.

CREATURE COMFORTS
With increasingly fluid workflows, businesses everywhere are stepping up office organisation strategies. Fortunately, they’ve got their work cut out for them with the advent of innovative systems such as Herman Miller’s newly launched Exclave. Designed by Gianfranco Zaccai and Continuum, this spatial ecosystem facilitates collaboration and creative thinking via human centred components that address sightlines, posture and circulation. With staffer wellbeing and adaptability at its core, Exclave’s futureforward sensibility gets optimal results.
While its building block-like formation might score major points visually, there’s more to this lightweight modular system than meets the eye. Laying the foundation for multiple arrangements, Banc’s marriage of comfort and modern elegance is a godsend for waiting areas, exhibition areas and lounges alike. A viable link for open areas, this network of mobile seating, tables and benches, enables easy communication thanks to an added capacity to engender discrete room-within-room situations.
Referencing the trend for laidback office furniture, Days Office, a new offering from Japanese brand Kokuyo, makes you feel right at home. Eschewing the humdrum palette of traditional workplaces, vibrant colours and finishes feature heavily here, enlivening the collection’s casual stacking chairs, high stools and adaptable tables. Focused on the ‘cosification’ of workplaces, Days Office aims to promote better staffer relationships through designated areas hinged on work, relaxation and social time.

PARDON MY FRENCH
DREAM SCREEN
Endowed with sound ergonomics and unmatched comfort, the debut of Keyn marks another notch on Herman Miller’s belt. A collaborative endeavour between the brand and London-based design studio forpeople, this stackable number reclines up to ten degrees, yielding effortlessly to the sitter’s movements. This built-in flexibility is the result of its patented CradleFlex technology. A perforated, breathable backrest and varied upholstery options cap off the innovative design, purveying style and function.
Created by brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, the sensuously formed Belleville chair is a shapely homage to the lively Parisian neighbourhood the designers call home. Referencing classic French bistro furnishings, everything from the materiality to the fabrication of Belleville evokes mystery. Paired with matching tables, the chair’s graceful structure is at once modern and a throwback to a glorious past. Elegant material and upholstery choices heighten its flair and versatility.
Workplaces of today are evolving at light speed, rendering the conventional structure of the office obsolete. While major physical changes aren’t always possible, one can readily resort to a growing number of stylish quick fixes. Bay, a range of mobile screens by Orange Box featuring upholstered and acrylic surfaces, is becoming a go-to option for many offices. Boasting flat and curved surfaces, this sleek partition is instant privacy on wheels.

COME TO LIGHT
SHINING EXAMPLE
GET IT STRAIGHT
Versatile fixtures imbued with sophistication and whimsy have long been a Brand van Egmond signature. The Dutch studio builds on what it knows best with Floating Candles. Composed of shining stainless steel, this hanging lamp personifies the very quintessence of light. Featuring interchangeable components fashioned as traditional candleholders, this unique design offers one the freedom of customisation. Whether your wont is a standalone ‘candle’ or a shimmering chandelier, it’s your call.
For lightings manufacturer Louis Poulsen, light quality and tasteful product design come together as one. Underscoring the above, VL38 floor lamp sums up the brand’s core philosophy in one streamlined little package. A vision in aluminum and brass, this standing fixture’s adjustable shade – painted white on the inside for gentle luminosity – was designed for optimal light distribution. The pared down silhouette is brought to the fore with a simple powdercoated, white finish.
No stranger to avant-garde concepts, Italian lighting experts Oluce comes out on top once again with the Do With 339. A floor lamp like no other, this stunning number by designer Carlo Colombo sets itself apart by doing away with excessive embellishments that divert the gaze from its bold, elongated structure. A painted metal cylinder, the lamp’s body tapers triumphantly upwards, illuminating dark corners and giving way to ambient spaces.

DESIGN & BUILD
Frank Chen Co-Founder & Director
IN HIS ELEMENT Frank Chen, co-founder and director of Kelvin & Frank Reid Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based interior design practice, didn’t begin his career in interior design. Trained in quantity surveying, Frank first started work as a quantity surveyor, later dabbled as a building products salesperson before landing a job as interior designer, and eventually starting his own company F2D & Associates in 2008. In 2012, he cofounded Kelvin & Frank Reid, and has not looked back since. A firm believer that design and function should exist in a harmonious relationship, he defines his key role as “space sculptor,” combining design elements that enhance a client’s brand and image, as well as delivering on effective, productive and cohesive work environments. Frank’s diverse experience has not only influenced him as an interior designer, but has proved useful in managing and mentoring a motley crew of designers. Here the hands-on director opens up about his personal mantra, professional relationship with his partner, ID team and clients, as well as his aspirations for 2017.
Q: What initially led you to real estate and interior design? A: I worked as a quantity surveyor after graduation in 1997, subsequently as a building products salesperson, before being offered to join an interior design firm. In 2008, I founded my first company, F2D & Associates, and eventually went into partnership with Kelvin in 2012. We had in-depth discussions about how we could integrate real estate and interior design based on our backgrounds and experiences, from branding to operation to policies and missions. The conversation went on for two months, and it was a breakthrough in both of our career paths when this partnership was formed. Q: For you, what epitomizes good office design? A: Fundamentally, the design elements that enhance the brand and image of the client are most important, in addition to elements that enable an effective, productive and cohesive environment. Design is subjective to individuals and organizations; a good office design reflects the core values and vision of an organization, and unites people through a series of well-defined and innovative spaces. More broadly, design can translate the vision of the organization and showcase its corporate culture and beliefs, as well as operational aspects. Q: What does it mean to ‘sculpt space’? A: It is a process of crafting, an action that begins from conception to creation. When sculpting space, one must be mindful of every functional aspect, user experience and sustainability. It not only demands great craftsmanship that is acquired from years of experience, but also calls for patience to listen, in addition to understanding the space. Space sculpting translates every feedback into a design language that both the designer and his or her client understand, besides those who come into contact with the sculpted space. Q: Is there a personal mantra or philosophy that you subscribe to? A: To take ownership of what we do. This is most important to those who are involved in the design process. This sense of taking ownership results in executing tasks to produce an outcome that exceeds the expectation, a result that also reflects the passion a person has for his/her work.
Q: How do you and your partner Kelvin Chiang complement each other? A: Although we have different experiences and backgrounds, we complement each other’s decision making. Our chemistry at work allows decisions to be made swiftly and surely. We wear a few hats at work; for instance, I handle design, project management, marketing and communications while Kelvin handles finance and project budgeting. We work closely together on aspects of business development, human resource, as well as defining the vision of the company. Happily, decision-making at Kelvin & Frank Reid is not a long drawn-out process as we support each other’s views, and this ability to complement one another has been the driving force of our company’s gradual expansion and exposure to higher profile projects. Q: What does a typical day look like for you? What do you do to unwind? A: To be honest, every workday feels like day 1 when the company began business. I am always excited to meet my team and eager to produce something good. I also enjoy looking into the development of skills and capabilities of every team member and his/her opportunities to grow with us, being consistently aware of the vast potential of these individuals who form our vibrant team. After a long day, I like catching up with business associates, and meeting up with new friends to exchange experiences. Q: What is the most enjoyable and difficult aspect of what you do? How do you overcome the latter? A: Creating cohesiveness in the team to generate effective outcomes is ironically a challenge I enjoy the most. Not surprisingly, there are immeasurable challenges in building relationships within the team, and managing the different mind-sets and beliefs of individuals who come from diverse backgrounds. I guide, coach and encourage as I place a high emphasis on each individual’s development simply because I believe when there is effective teamwork, any outcome can only be good.
entity. I find him to be friendly and humble when he visited our office a few years ago. My source of inspiration also comes from working with people, whether on short-term or long-term stints. I find similarities in design and choreography; in dance, emotions translate into movements. Similarly, interacting with people helps stimulate my thoughts, and pushes me to think quickly and creatively to generate a design. Q: If you hadn’t gone into your current line of work, what would have been the alternative, and why? A: Graphic design. I have aspired to be a graphic designer since I was young. Q: What do you look forward to achieving in 2017, personally and professionally? A: Every year we decide on a theme for the year; for example, 2015 was the year of creativity, while 2016 is the year of elitism. Each theme is carried forward to another year. Though we have not decided on the theme for 2017, we are looking into expanding the team; thus, we may decide on a theme reflecting this intention. Expanding our team also means pursuing projects that are higher in profile, size or nature as getting greater exposure in the industry can enable us to be recognized as a creative and dynamic force to reckon with. Personally, I wish to curate more self-initiated creative projects, as well as collaborate with passionate and talented designers or artists in this region. These projects will not only help in showcasing my personal passion in collaborating with like-minded design professionals, but will also allow me to gain greater exposure overseas.
Q: Who or what inspires you? A: Chris Lee of The Asylum. Chris founded this multidisciplinary design firm, which has gone on to become a globally recognized, award-winning

Kelvin Chiang Co-Founder & Director
THINKING OUT OF THE BOX
Dedicated to designing through the eyes of each client, Kelvin Chiang, co-founder and director of the eponymous real estate interior design company Kelvin & Frank Reid Pte Ltd, approaches every project in a tailored fashion, not only informing the design language, but catering to each client’s desires, needs and expectations. From reshaping and redefining a new approach to delivering a more advanced level of service in workspace planning to creating well-thought-out spaces that respond to a world increasingly focused on creativity, innovation, and wellness, Kelvin seems to have it all figured out. Office Concept chats with the accommodating director about the up-and-coming Kelvin & Frank Reid, which already boasts clients in Australia, UK, and US, his ultimate business goals, and projects he currently has in the works, to gain further insight into what sets the company apart from the rest of the REID pack.
Q: How has office design in Singapore evolved since you first started out in this industry? A: 15 years ago, many design practices tried very hard to convince clients to covert from ‘L’ shape desks to bench-style desks to achieve space- and cost- savings in real estate. Along the way, hot desks were introduced and had its fair share of limelight to drive costs down. This was followed by green mark certification and environment sustainability, which were the rage in new office buildings in the CBD. Design materials that were chosen had to be scrutinised to qualify for use in these new buildings, which in turn drove manufacturers to relook the production line. In recent years, ABW (activity-based workplace) or agile workspace has evolved tremendously. Invariably there are the yaysayers and naysayers of this workspace design trend, but I think ABW is here to stay, In fact, ABW has plenty of room to develop in Singapore. Kelvin & Frank Reid is a firm believer of this methodology of space usage; we already have an in-house capability to perform this sort of workspace strategy. I also firmly believe that a well-thought-out design and layout that has considerations for wellness will give organizations a direct return through a lower rate of work-related injury, higher productivity, lower absenteeism, and improved employee satisfaction, morale, and creativity, all of which translates into significantly reduced turnover and new hire training. After all, office spaces are for people, and people have to feel good when they use these spaces. Q: How did you meet your partner Frank Chen? Was it clear fairly early on that you would start a company together? A: I met Frank in 2004 through an introduction of a mutual ex-classmate (Frank’s polytechnic mate and my university mate), Kirk Tan, who was connecting Frank and myself in the hope that this could lead to business opportunities and cross referrals. I was in office real estate while Frank was in office interior design. To date, we have yet to thank Kirk. 12 years ago, I had no entrepreneurial intentions. In fact, I regretted not setting up shop back then. In retrospect, I was then a big believer that entrepreneurship was inspired, and you have to be mentally ready to strike out on your own in order for a business to succeed. Q: Tell us a little about what you do in the company and how that compares with Frank’s role.
A: In an enterprise of 22 members, both Frank and I must take on as many roles as possible. This is important as the company is in expansion mode and we will therefore need different points of view to make milestone decisions. On the other hand, we are mindful that the duality of decisions can create bottlenecks. Thankfully, due to an understanding that is borne from a deep friendship, we always arrive at a consensus. We both manage clients and design and build processes together or separately, depending on the scope and scale of the project. There are times when we are both involved in the entire lifecycle of a project. However, we identify the company’s directions, implement strategies and manage the staff together. Q: What projects are you most proud of at the moment and why? A: Beca. Beca is a group of mechanical and electrical consultants for some of the world’s largest and most renowned commercial developments, which include DUO, Changi Airport Terminal 4, RWS and Marina Bay Sands. We had the privilege to work with these experts who monitored our mechanical and electrical designs of their new office. Although Beca has access to many established architects, yet the company opted to collaborate with Kelvin & Frank Reid for its new Asia hub. I am enormously proud of this Beca project as the person in charge and sole decision maker for design elements was based in Melbourne; however, certain design-related decisions were left to us to make, and he stood by our decisions. Beca personifies the dream client that any designer would love to have, and this easy relationship demonstrates the level of trust and capability the Kelvin & Frank Reid team has achieved. Q: What sets Kelvin & Frank Reid apart from other firms in Singapore? A: We entrust both our senior and junior colleagues with decision-making responsibilities. Nonetheless, we discovered it can be a struggle for the junior designers to be making decisions as they did not expect Frank and myself to entrust them with projects although they are fresh out from school. The junior designers are, of course, guided by the seniors. Still, we believe that when junior designers are allowed to make critical decisions, they will have ownership over their decisions, which can produce a desired outcome for, seemingly, the most trivial of tasks. This sort
of gruelling process is highly appreciated by the junior designers, especially when they see themselves grow exponentially. Q: You have quite a diverse clientele. Media, oil petrol, electronics and retail companies have all enlisted your services. What do you have that they want? A: Commitment and personal involvement from Frank and myself. When clients know that the owners themselves are involved in their build process, clients will know the design company will leave no room for hiccups because the company’s reputation and owners’ livelihood are at stake. Q: In your opinion, what is the key to a good client and designer relationship? A: Communication. Design is subjective while function is fixed. Within these two contrasting parameters, a relationship can be at risk if clients place function above form, or we go overboard with design aesthetics. Hence, effective communication can certainly help avert potential errors and problems. Q: Does Kelvin & Frank Reid have a signature aesthetic or approach? If so, how would you describe this? A: We do not have a signature aesthetic as we design and build according to our clients’ needs. Approach, however, is very well-defined — we have to understand the needs of clients. Although we persist in implementing functions, we never insist on a particular design based on our own design preferences. Q: What is the secret to longevity in this industry? A: Always design and build by putting function over form. Think of yourself as a stakeholder who is investing an amount of capital expenditure on design and build, and ask yourself what are the opportunity costs and the level of your willingness to go ahead with the capex. Clients like to work for the long term with a design firm that puts the client’s interests first before the design firm’s own. Q: What do we have to look forward to in terms of upcoming trends in office design? A: Mobility Ergonomics Wellness.

he journey of Kelvin & Frank Reid began with 9 years of friendship between two gentlemen, Kelvin Chiang and Frank Chen, when they came together and sat down on a weekend to discuss about a breakthrough in each other’s career. Kelvin whom had then spent the last 14 years in office real estate brokerage and advisory; and Frank, whom has been in construction and office interior design industry since graduation in 1997, decided to integrate the two expertise and form a partnership. It was as quick as on the same day of the weekend in-depth discussion, that the company’s name was agreed by the two founders Kelvin & Frank Reid Pte Ltd. “Reid” represents ‘Real Estate Interior Design’ which is on the motion that office designs and office build will need additional knowledge of fundamental real estate principles to be sustainable and holistic. With the believe on success and a strong sense of long term commitment, the duo agreed to stake their

names as a brand recognition in the incorporation of this breakthrough. The partnership took place in 2012, which was an extension from each of their own business, began with the original team from Frank’s founded company F2D & Associates Pte Ltd. Kelvin & Frank Reid’s team has organically expand, from a team of 9 to a team of 22 within 4 years. Although the two gentlemen came from different educational background and have been practicing different professions, they seem to be thinking very much alike even till date. Through developing businesses, managing operations and finances, both found instantly a common philosophy - to own an enriched life. In the process of running business, success may be subjective in many different definitions with revenue and profit being the most commonly regarded indicator.
During a business trip to Kuala Lumpur, whereby Kelvin & Frank Reid was invited to pitch their design to one of Malaysia’s largest telecoms; Kelvin and Frank had simultaneously brought up and mutually agreed, pursuing an enriched career life with different experiences became their aim. It was also a result from the process and procedures that both of them been through; from setting up an office in Kuala Lumpur, to a few design pitch invitations that took place in 2014, it had been truly enriching. On sharing of the past 4 years since incorporation, Kelvin and Frank have experienced equally in building a core team and delivering various nature of projects. As an old Chinese saying goes, 万事起步难(all things are most difficult to start off), the first year had been a sailboat through the rough sea, facing with hopes of employing the right people, convincing potential clients strategizing and re-strategizing to realize our goals. Second year onwards, with the focus of having the right people in the team, the team took care of the
end results with exciting engagements of top notch clients such as FMC, Bridgestone, a state owned fund manager, Edrington Group, Intertrust, a Taiwanese bank and importantly being appointed as a long term designer for a local telco. The core team that they built has in turn inspired them to see a clearer vision which is aspiring to be the most creative office interior designer in Singapore providing innovative solutions, design elements, productive environment. The daily missionary task of the company is to be creative right from the core of the team itself. Moving forward, Kelvin & Frank Reid will be restless to create further enhancement on people development, service processes, identifying and developing new design trends that will set us apart from our current self. We would want to be the most creative design firm, re-creating ourselves in the future journey. kelvinfrankreid.com

ntertrust Singapore provides a wide range of services to private and corporate clients who wish to roll out corporate structures in Singapore. Their main objective was to mix their 3 business divisions under one office space. This became our first achievement as the 3 divisions needed to get enough space for each other to continue their activity and more collaboration area to increase their efficiency. The second achievement was to incorporate more meeting room and a training room of 20 pax on top of their existing head counts. In order to make the best out of the space we design a training room which could be easily used as an extension of the pantry area leaving more sharing space for the employees. In order to enhance the space, we differentiate the area with contrasting flooring and distinctive lighting and ceiling conducive to create unique atmosphere for the people. The design of reception area has a wide signage wall with a long pathway, leading from the front towards all the meeting rooms. The internal office space gains maximum openness, line of sight and window views, which is one of the elements that our team is appointed.

itting is a tricky business, particularly in today’s workplace where shifting work dynamics are fast changing the way we work, move and situate ourselves. Working with German firm ITO Design, office furniture experts Haworth have it all figured out with Fern, an exceptional new office chair that yields itself to the user’s support-focused needs. Featuring a unique, sculpted shape that takes a cue from its plant-based namesake, Fern subverts the look and feel of the traditional office chair to give rise to rock-solid ergonomics. The consequence of extensive research and countless prototypes, the finished design is defined by its brilliantly configured structure. Typically an external component of the chair, the suspension architecture has been relocated in the centre, resulting in soft, comfortable edges worthy of an extended repose. The adjustment mechanisms are additionally concealed, adding to the design’s visual appeal and making it ideal for a range of different workspaces. Facilitating total body support, the chair’s innovative suspension system – the aptly named ‘Stem’ - takes centre stage. Drawing inspiration from the framework of a fern, the system’s central loop spine features multiple ‘fronds’ that support different areas of the sitter’s back. Responsive to every twist and turn without the need for constant adjustments, Fern’s built-in flexibility takes into account individual sitting styles and habits, making users feel more engaged and in tuned with their own movements. ap.haworth.com

ounded in 1974, Thai manufacturer Carpets Inter has spent the past few decades perfecting the art of great flooring, resulting in well-designed, high-quality products that stand the test of time. Every aspect of the manufacturing, from fibre and yarn extrusion to spinning, dyeing, twisting, weaving, tufting and finishing, is presided over with care at Carpets Inter’s state-of-the-art facilities. The much talked about EcoSoft® is no exception to the rule. A new and improved take on carpet tile backing, the green-focused product is composed of materials derived from discarded drinking water bottles, plus five percent postindustrial recycled PET. Its enhanced materiality effectively sets it apart from run-of-the-mill counterparts, such as conventional PVC and bitumen hard backings as well as urethane cushion backing. Carpets Inter’s characteristic emphasis on pleasing aesthetics is also a major plus, as evidenced in a classroom building belonging to Trinity Anglican College, Australia. The New South Wales educational facility recently installed 2,585 square meters of EcoSoft® carpet tiles in three colours, Sanskrit Dasa, Catur and Sapta. Designed by Clarke Keller, the neutrally hued tiles, when combined, created the look and feel of a unified space while doubling the sound absorption of hard backed counterparts. “EcoSoft® carpet tiles plays a role in the overall acoustic performance of the building,” commented Ella Masters, a rep from Clarke Keller. A named that has become renowned the world over, VersaLink’s success story began humbly in 1991. Back then it made office furniture exclusively for the local market. But it didn’t take very long before word of its exceptional designs and high-quality products spread beyond its Malaysian shores. Gradually, requests from international customers began flooding in, and business grew. As it continued to expand and innovate, a new brand was created – Versalink, which aptly reflects its versatile nature.

T
hough the look and feel of workspaces everywhere have changed for the better with the advent of more creative businesses, there are times when the standard office can still come across as the drabbest place in the world. In lieu of a major interior overhaul, one might do well to change up the furniture as a quick fix. Even the most overlooked spaces can unexpectedly take on a different light when spruced up with a few fetching pieces that would work just as well in one’s living room. The ArteComo Kissara chair by Oasis was designed explicitly for this purpose. Inspired by the Wau Merah, a traditional Malaysian kite, this eyecatching seat scores points for its distinctively sculpted backrest and bold duo-toned palette. A cheery addition in the home or office, the Kissara comes as a breath of fresh air, enlivening cozy communal areas and collaborative work areas alike with its upbeat design. A height adjustable feature and built-in swivel base allows for complete ease of movement, enabling one to interact seamlessly with others without any form of strain. A standout perk is the chair’s ergonomically formed backrest which wraps around the sitter’s back while functioning as a plush support for one’s arms. A highlight of the aesthetically pleasing Kissara furniture range, the chair may also be matched with corresponding pieces such as a lounger, lounge table and a standing table for a fully coordinated look. arte-como.com

ith shifting work dynamics fast redefining office life as we know it, flexibility in the workplace is more imperative than ever. This pressing need for versatility is reflected in the rise of mobile workspaces and the proliferation of increasingly adaptive office furniture; in the past few years, manufacturers everywhere have heeded the call for innovative desking systems that give way to productive collaborative work while supporting tasks that benefit from individual concentration. Razor, a recently launched product by Malaysian company AM Office belongs in this category. Created with multitasking and flexible planning in mind, this smartly devised system is clearly a winner in the style stakes, owing to its simple, timeless design and clean palette. Razor’s understated elegance allows for unrestrained mix and match possibilities; paired with a tabletop with a high-gloss finish for an ultra-modern vibe, the die-cast aluminum legs are central to this product’s appeal. Featuring a chrome finish and gentle contours that give rise to a feeling of movement, these eye-catching stems also serve as a solid base. A set of red portable drawers come as a welcome pop of colour as well as a handy complement to the system; set on rolling canisters, they enable staffers to move personal storage in a jiff. Ideal for individual or public use, a four-digit combination lock with changeable code keeps one’s belongings secure, particularly in a high-turnover environment. amoffice.com.my

NIMBUS CASE STUDY - LIGHTING + ACOUSTICS 136
HARMONIOUS COMBINATION RENOWNED ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING OFFICE OPTS FOR LIGHTING AND ACOUSTICS SOLUTIONS FROM THE NIMBUS GROUP AND APPRECIATES THE HIGH DESIGN QUALITY.
“THIS WAS A VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE FOR THOSE IN CHARGE AT IBG AS THE EMPLOYEES HAD BEEN USED TO ONE- OR TWO-PERSON OFFICES, AND IN SOME CASE, THE SOLUTIONS FOR ROOM ACOUSTICS IN OTHER BRANCH OFFICES ARE NOT COMPLETELY SATISFACTORY.”
I
t may sound like an unusual approach to planning, but it really is true: the Nimbus Group lighting and acoustics solutions in the new office of IBG B. Graf AG Engineering in St. Gallen are actually based on a photograph in a brochure. Roger Violka, the director of building technology at IBG, was even inspired by the colour of the Rossoacoustic PADs as the combination with the Modul Q luminaires was exactly what he had had in mind. A leading engineering office, specialising among other things in energy and building technology, opted for LED luminaires and Rossoacoustic solutions from the Nimbus Group with its two brands Nimbus (lighting) and Rosso (acoustics). It was the visual and functional compatibility of the two product ranges that really convinced those in charge. Their minds were made up once and for all following a visit to the so-called Mock-Up, the Nimbus Group’s extraordinary showroom in Stuttgart, where they were received by the company’s proprietor Dietrich F. Brennenstuhl. “We are always aware of our position as role models when we choose a technology or product,”

FUNCTIONAL ARCHITECTURE, EFFECTIVE FITTINGS Lack of space for the almost 100 employees at the location in St. Gallen was the main factor behind the construction project. That is why the premises were planned with extra capacity for around 30 future colleagues and dimensioned so generously. One is immediately captivated by the unique, slightly elevated position of the outskirts of St. Gallen; the unusually high windows inevitably draw one’s gaze the surrounding meadows and forests. Having taken all of this in, it is clear why Violka speaks of a place of inspiration, communication and presentation. In the assessment of Jürgen Staud of RLC Architekten AG, the building concept of the straightforward “New East Building” stands out due to the balance between proportions, materials, utility and economy. Despite the abundance of daylight, economical LED luminaires were required, especially for the communal and circulation zones. Furthermore, effective acoustics solution were needed to compensate for the hard surfaces – exposed and micro top concrete. EYE-CATCHERS, SPLASHES OF COLOUR AND A GREAT DEAL OF FLEXIBILITY The Nimbus and Rosso products used in the project “conform to the architectural functionality while also displaying a design impulse that does the building good,” says the architect Jürgen Staud. The exposed concrete ceiling is brought to life by the square Modul Q Project suspended LED luminaires and Rossoacoustic PADs of the same shape. Suspended at varying heights, green PADs alternate with white and are interspersed by the extremely slim suspended LED luminaires – a playful contrast to the largely “cool” work zones. Other Rossoacoustic systems have also been deployed at IBG, where they support the versatility of utilisation intended by the architects: the semi-transparent CP30 system panels afford the individual workplaces
more privacy while allowing spontaneous changes to a room’s layout thanks to their low weight. Although just as lightweight, the TP30 Wool acoustic panels have been fixed in position and form practical cubicles for accommodating coats, photocopiers and stationery. They are in the same shade of green as the ceiling pads or in matt black. If necessary, they too can be quickly and easily moved to accommodate growing staff numbers. THE INFLUENCE OF THE ACOUSTICS EXPERT The harmony in the design of the luminaires and acoustic elements was a decisive factor for the client. However, what is even more important to Roger Violka is that the employees are really satisfied with the result of the design of their workplaces. “This was a very important issue for those in charge at IBG as the employees had been used to one- or two-person offices, and in some case, the solutions for room acoustics in other branch offices are not completely satisfactory,” explains Enrico Romano from Gerevini Ingenieurbüro AG. He began by determining the absorption levels that the acoustic measures were to achieve. Then the client selected the products – also taking aesthetic aspects into account – and the acoustics expert calculated the reverberation time and speech intelligibility in the offices and communal areas once more in great detail. This told him how many Rossoacoustic elements would be needed and where they should be positioned. CORRIDOR AND CAFETERIA REJUVENATED WITH NIMBUS AND ROSSO The convincing solution in the new building seems to have had a contagious effect: the client decided to completely rejuvenate one corridor in the main building from the 1970s and also had it fitted out with Modul Q luminaires and acoustic PADs. The result is a lighter, more friendly and, in terms of acoustics, much more pleasant working atmosphere. The cafeteria is housed in the structure linking the two buildings. Eighteen PADs were also installed on the ceiling here to enhance the room’s acoustics. nimbus-group.com

ODE TO ART SPOTLIGHT
HIP POP ART
M
auro once mused, “I wish I could be a politician to govern fairly, a religious leader to guide pragmatically and a powerful entrepreneur to serve as an example and inspiration to others, but I can’t. However what I can do hopefully is create art that makes people think about global issues.” Indeed, Mauro’s sculptures, which are a hybrid of Pop and Minimalist art, have been wildly successful in captivating the hearts and minds of viewers everywhere. The radiant colours and polished surfaces of his Jelly Babies may seem delightfully humorous on first glance, but they also embody disconcerting revelations on the excesses of the material world we inhabit. Every viewer is always intrigued and charmed time and again by the tireless verve and effulgence of Mauro’s mind. The reflective quality of the resin, crystals and marble that Mauro uses give his sculptures a playful appeal. Yet the luster and the almost delectable charm of his work belie a more important message that Mauro intends to convey: like his shiny but translucent sculptures, we are caricatures of our obsessions and aspirations, and we have been made hollow by our aggressive pursuit of consumerist culture. This is perhaps what shines best about Mauro: the way in which he makes sharp social commentary and mixes it with a dash of aesthetic sophistication. Mauro’s rich experiences prior to his career as a sculptor have no doubt contributed to the adventurous spirit that manifests itself through his many experiments with different medias. Initially trained in theatre studies, Mauro later embarked on a series of interesting careers ranging from film production to interior design. The lessons that he acquired through these various disciplines enriched his artistic understanding of the world, and also afforded him a unique vision that makes each and every one of his artworks recognizably his.
