GUENAY ULUTUNCOK 1954 Born in Istanbul. 1962–1974 Schooling, including City College course in furniture design and interior design. 1974–1975 Advanced technical college entrance certificate and entrance examination for university. General language course and internship in preparation for architecture studies in Germany. 1975–1984 Architecture studies and postgraduate course in “Technology in the Tropics” in Cologne. 1978–1981 Volunteered as photographer and layouter at the city newspaper “Kölner Volksblatt”. Photomontages and illustrations modelled on the work of John Hartfield. First publications in print media. Conception, editor and co-publisher of satirical journal “BIBER” in German and Turkish. 1981 Degree as architect and engineer (Diplomingenieur) in Cologne, began work as freelance photojournalist. End of 1981 Co-founder of photography agency “laif Photos & Reportagen” in Cologne. Work focus: reportages on political and social conflicts as well as cultural and ethnic diversity for German and international magazines. 1982–1986 Several trips and longer stays in the Middle East and North Africa to report on themes including the Middle East crisis, the war in Lebanon, Afghanistan, the conflict over Cyprus, the Western Saharan War, etc. 1984 Finished postgraduate course in “Technology in den Tropics”. From 1986 reportage work revolved around issues in Sub-Saharan Africa. 1988/1989 Journalism grant from the Heinz Kühn Foundation for Namibia and Angola. Volunteer at the newspaper “Namibia Nachrichten” on themes including the independence process, white Namibians, settlers of German origin, the SWAPO (South West Africa People’s Organisation) and PLAN (People’s Liberation Army of Namibia) in Angola. 1989/1991 Two-year stay in southern Africa. Main topics of interest: Namibia on the path to independence, South Africa’s route to democracy.

1991 Conception and project management of a six-month professional training workshop for photojournalists in Namibia in collaboration with IOJ (International Organisation of Journalists), SWAPO (South West Africa People’s Organisation) and NAMPA (Namibian Press Agency). 1991–1992 Two prolonged stays in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq: production of a reportage on women in the Kurdish PKK organisation. 1992 Publication of the photo book “ANGOLA - Ich spreche von einem Land, das wir suchen” (Marino-Verlag, Munich). 1993 Editor of the book “Ez Kurdim - Ich bin eine Kurdin” – about the Kurdish women’s uprising (Marino-Verlag, Munich). 1993 Awarded Special Mention in the UNESCO/ACCU World Photo Contest in Tokyo. 1994 Publication of the photo book “AFRIKAS KINDER” (Peter Hammer Verlag, Wuppertal). 1994–1997 Production of several reportages for FOCUS magazine on themes including the genocide in Rwanda, the cholera catastrophe, and the ebola epidemic in the Congo. 1997 Fujifilm Euro Press Photo Awards, national winner in the “Features” category. 1998 Fujifilm Euro Press Photo Awards, overall winner – Photojournalist of the Year – in Germany. 1999 Founded the firm “UTOPIA - Visual Images” 1999–2002 Advertising concepts and development of corporate image for logistics companies including “Hays Logistics” and their German partners. Production and management of promotional products. Concept development for EXPO 2000. Photo documentation and tourist advertising concept for the Ministry of Tourism in Ethiopia. 2002 Registration of the company “Mediaproduction” with the field of work “Consulting for Development Projects”. Consulting and development of media concepts, primarily for the GTZ (German Technical Cooperation), in the fields of nature conservation, biodiversity and food culture. 2002/2003 Complete multimedia concept and production for GTZ nature conservation projects in Africa: exhibitions, multimedia shows, brochures etc.

2003 Grant from VG Bild-Kunst for the photo documentation “Der tropische Regenwald und seine Bewohner in Afrika”. 2004 Co-editor of the book “Zehn Jahre seit dem Genozid. Ruanda”, as well as design and production of an overall multimedia concept for the “Murambi Memorial” in Rwanda. 2005 Workshop on a new magazine concept, the “Pendjari Journal”, for Pendjari National Park in Benin. Exhibition concept on the theme of child labour in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. 2006 Production of an international wall calendar on the theme of “Diversity and Food Culture”, in cooperation with the GTZ and the German Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. 2007 Photo documentation and product concept for the project “Biosphere Reserve - Pendjari” in Benin. 2008 Development and positioning of the online gallery “www.original-photography.de” Conception and production of the exhibitions “Kambodscha-Desaster” and “Pendjari Biosphere Reserve”. Production of the section on Africa in the book “Unser lebendiger Planet”, WWF/Pro Futura 2009. 2009 Development and positioning of the online gallery “Kambodscha-Desaster”. Grant from VG Bild-Kunst for the photo documentation “Deutsch-Türken” – 50 years of Turkish guest workers in Germany. 2010 Production of the book “Atemlos” – more than a reportage book, by Alexander Goeb Exhibition concept and elaboration of the themes: a.) “Planet Earth”– climate change and renewable energies. b.) “Biodiversity” – for the UN Year of Biodiversity c.) “Deutsch-Türken” – 50 years of Turkish guest workers in Germany. 2011 Conception and production of the reportage “Ein besseres Leben in Europa” – poverty or political persecution is making them flee their home countries. Thousands are crossing the border from Turkey to Greece, hoping for asylum in the EU. They come from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia or Syria. Nominated for the St. Leopold Peace Prize in 2011, awarded by the Klosterneuburg Monastery in Vienna, with Special Mention for humanitarian engagement in art.

The “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” Foundation (Stiftung EVZ) awards a photo from the Sudan as one of the 10 best pictures on the theme of “Poverty in Africa”. Conception and production of full-length portraits of “Three Generations” of Turkish immigrants in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Founding of the non-profit organisation “Media-International” in Cologne. The “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” Foundation (Stiftung EVZ) awards a photo from the Sudan as one of the 2012 best pictures on the theme of “Poverty in Africa”. Wiederholung Award from publisher Wort im Bild for a photo (Congo River, 100 years after Joseph Conrad) for the Literature Festival in July in Klagenfurt, Austria. Member of the organisations: IFJ - International Federation of Journalists, DGPh - Gesellschaft für Photographie, Reporter ohne Grenzen, and the photography agency “Laif Agentur für Photos & Reportagen”.
