Det mystiske og magiske nordlyset
Det er spektakulært, magisk, mystisk og vakkert. Og det som for oss er noe som hyppig utspiller seg på himmelen fra tidlig høst til sein vinter, er et eksotisk og «once in a lifetime»-eventyr for folk i store deler av verden.

Vi snakker selvfølgelig om nordlyset.
På Senja er nordlys-turisme i stadig vekst, og flere aktører opplever stor pågang av utenlandske turister som ankommer øya med ønske om å fylle kamerarullen med grønne — og for de riktig heldige — lilla lyseksplosjoner på himmelen.
Faretruende varsler og hodekutting Nordlyset har til alle tider fascinert mennesker. Selv om vi i dag vet mye om fenomenet, florerer gamle sagn og historier om alt fra faretruende varsler om krig, ulykker og død. For eksempel så samene på nordlyset som noe som skulle fryktes og respekteres. De trodde det var sjelene til de døde som åpenbarte seg på himmelen, og det skulle for all del ikke snakkes om. Å tilkalle nordlysets oppmerksomhet, kunne i verste fall føre til at det kunne strekke seg ned og kutte av hodet ditt! Den dag i dag er det fortsatt noen samer som for sikkerhets skyld holder seg innendørs når nordlyset lyser på himmelen.
Dette er bare ett eksempel på hvor mange myter og legender som har oppstått rundt fenomenet nordlys. Og det kan være til stor glede og forlystelse å lese eller høre om gammel overtro og utrolige historier. Men hva er det egentlig som skjer når himmelen nærmest eksploderer over oss i farger?

sfæren, når elektroner og patroner kolliderer med atmosfæregassen. Det er energi fra denne gassen som sendes ut i form av lys. Vi ser som oftest fargene grønt, rødt og blått, men egentlig er fargene i nordlyset et linjespektrum fra ultrafiolett til infrarødt.
Planetes nordlysbelte strekker seg fra kysten av Nord-Norge, fra Lofoten mot Nordkapp. Og siden høyden vanligvis er mellom 100 og 300 kilometer over jordoverflata, betyr det at det kan sees i langt større områder enn i disse regionene. Det som er helt sikkert, er at det i Nord-Norge er svært gode forhold for å oppleve dette fenomenet, for her er det mest nordlys i hele verden. Senja ligger perfekt plassert i dette nordlysbeltet, og har også mange plasser helt uten lys. For det må være klarvær og minst mulig lysforurensing for å best kunne se det spektakulære showet på himmelen. Og siden værforholdene kan variere med bare noen kilometer, er det lurt å kunne flytte litt på seg.
Det er med andre ord ingen garanti for at tilreisende og turister får se nordlys under tida de oppholder seg her. Og det er ikke alltid like enkelt å forutsi når på døgnet det vil vise seg. Derfor gjelder det å være på vakt, følge ivrig med på nordlysvarsler og kanskje jakte litt rundt i området. Bare dét kan jo bli en svært så eksotisk og spennende opplevelse!
Bærekraftig nordlysopplevelse Som nevnt innledningsvis, er det flere aktører på Senja som i disse dager tar imot gjester fra hele verden, med ønske om å få oppleve det vidunderlige nordlyset. Og helt i tråd med at Visit Senja Region jobber med å gjøre hele Senja til et bærekraftig reisemål, er det flere av aktørene som fasiliteter for «kortreist» nordlysopplevelse.
Hamn i Senja kan lokke med 360 graders fyrlykt med førsteklasses utsikt over Bergsfjorden omkranset av fjell. Er det snø på bakken, tilbyr de også kveldsturer og nordlysjakt på truger. Man trenger ikke komme langveisfra for at en sånn kveldstur skal være forlokkende. Omgitt av mørke, med frostglitter i snøen, stjerneklar himmel, nordlys og lyden av knitrende snø under trugene er noe alle og enhver bør få oppleve minst én gang i livet.
Ute på Sør-Senja, hos Skrolsvik kystferie, har de nylig fått på plass en nordlys-lavvo. – Plasseringen er veldig nær husene våre gjester bor i, men

samtidig helt uten lysforstyrrelser, sier daglig leder Gunnar Torgersen. – Det er generelt lite lysforurensing i Skrolsvik, så gjestene trenger ikke bevege seg særlig langt for å få optimale forhold for gode nordlysbilder. – Dette er første sesong vi har denne lavvoen i bruk, og det har blitt veldig godt mottatt hos gjestene. De setter også stor pris på at de kan sitte inne i en god og varm lavvo, drikke te, småprate og se på dansende nordlys gjennom glasstak. Men noen gjester ønsker at vi drar litt rundt på øya, og da gjør vi selvsagt det. Jeg er veldig involvert i gjestenes opphold hos oss, og tar de gjerne med ut på tur. Trugetur i Ånderdalen nasjonalpark er noe flere av gjestene har blitt tatt med på, forteller han.
Nordlysopplevelse på Senja trekker i seg selv tilreisende fra mange land, både i Europa og ellers i verden. Men for å virkelig føle Senja-magien på kroppen, tilbyr flere av aktørene pakker og dagsturer, som blant annet hvalsafari, hundekjøring og guida toppturer.
The mysterious and magical northern lights
It is spectacular, magical, mysterious, and beautiful. And what for us is something that frequently unfolds in the sky from early autumn to late winter, is an exotic and «once in a lifetime» adventure for people in large parts of the world.
We are of course talking about the northern lights. On Senja, northern lights tourism is constantly growing, and several operators are experiencing a large influx of foreign tourists who arrive on the island with the desire to fill their camera roll with green - and for the really lucky ones - purple light explosions in the sky.
Warnings and beheadings The northern lights have always fascinated people. Although today we know a lot about the phenomenon, old legends and stories about everything from ominous warnings of war, accidents and death. For example, the Sami saw the northern lights as something to be feared and respected. They believed that it was the souls of the dead who revealed themselves in heaven, and it was by no means to be talked about. At worst, calling the northern lights´ attention could cause it to reach down and cut your head off! To this day, there are still some Sámi who, for safety’s sake, stay indoors when the northern lights shine in the sky.
This is just one example of how many myths and legends have arisen around the phenomenon of the northern lights. And it can be a great pleasure and amusement to read or hear about old superstitions and incredible stories. But what really that happens when the sky almost explodes above us in colors?
the northern lights belt in the north Let’s do some science, are you ready? Here is a brief explanation:
The light phenomenon aurora borealis occurs when energetic particles from the sun are hurled towards the earth. Northern lights occur in the upper, polar atmosphere, when electrons and particles collide with the atmospheric gas. It is energy from this gas that is emitted in the form of light. We most often see the colors green, red, and blue, but actually the colors in the northern lights are a line spectrum from ultraviolet to infrared.
The planet’s northern lights belt stretches from the coast of northern Norway, from Lofoten towards Nordkapp. And since the height is usually between 100 and 300 kilometers above the earth’s surface, it means that it can be seen in much larger areas than in these regions. What is absolutely certain is that in northern Norway there are very good conditions for experiencing this phenomenon, because here there are the most northern lights in the whole world. Senja is perfectly located in this northern lights belt, and also has many places completely without light pollutions. Because there must be clear weather and as little light pollution as possible to best see the spectacular show in the sky. And since the weather conditions can vary by just a few kilometers, it’s good to be able to move around a bit.
In other words, there is no guarantee that visitors and tourists will see the northern lights during their stay here. And it is not always as easy to predict what time of day it will appear. Therefore, it is important to be on guard, keep an eye out for aurora warnings and perhaps hunt a bit around the area. That alone can be such an exotic and exciting experience!
Sustainable experience As mentioned at the beginning, there are several operators at Senja who these days welcome guests from all over the world, with the desire to experience the wonderful northern lights. And in line with the fact that Visit Senja Region is working to make the whole of Senja a sustainable travel destination, several of the operators offer facilities for a «short-distance» Northern Lights experience.
Hamn in Senja can beckon with a 360-degree lighthouse with a first-class view of the Bergsfjord surrounded by mountains. If there is snow on the ground, they also offer evening walks and northern lights hunting on snowshoes. You don’t have to come from afar for such an evening trip to be enticing. Surrounded by darkness, with frost glitter in the snow, starry skies, northern lights, and the sound of snow crunching under the snowshoes is something everyone should experience at least once in their life.
Out on South-Senja, at Skrolsvik Kystferie, they have recently installed an aurora borealis lavvu. - The location is very close to the houses our guests live in, but at the same time completely without light pollutions, says general manager Gunnar Torgersen. -There is generally very little light pollution in Skrolsvik, so guests do not have to move very far to get optimal conditions for good pictures of the northern lights. - This is the first season we have used this lavvu, and it has been very well received by the guests. They also greatly appreciate the fact that they can sit in a nice and warm lavvu, drink tea, chat and watch the dancing northern lights through the glass roof. But some guests want us to go around the island a bit, and then of course we do. I am very involved in the guests’ stay with us, and I am happy to take them out on trips. Snowshoeing in Ånderdalen National Park is something more of the guests have been to, he says.
The northern lights experience at Senja itself attracts visitors from many countries, both in Europe and elsewhere in the world. But to really feel the Senja magic on the body, several operators offer packages and day trips, such as whale watching, dog sledding and guided summit tours.
