If you visit our City Hall, make sure to see our swan sculpture before entering. The metaphor of Oslo as a swan makes sense in many ways. Compared to other Scandinavian capitals, Oslo has long been considered the ugly duckling – as in the fairy tale by the Danish storyteller H. C. Andersen. Oslo has never fit the image of an ordinary duck, or a typical European city. A few years ago, Oslo suddenly realised that we had become a swan, more beautiful, flying faster and more majestic than the other ducks. Norway used to be all about the fjords, the midnight sun, and with an exaggerated reputation as an eldorado for naturelovers. No more. Oslo is the fastest growing city in Europe, and soon Oslo will be synonymous with Norway. Coming to Oslo is like being in a pinball game, rolling from one magic moment to another, and then you realize that the summer holiday is over, even though you still want more. Oslo doesn´t really know how to handle tourists. We´re too shy to exploit you, and too proud to be humbly service minded. But we love people. Throw away your map, leave your camera in your room, and forget your watch. Oslo’s identity is all abour heart and nothing about history. If you love us, then you`re one of us. It´s quite easy to become an Oslover, actually it only takes one day, if you visit these place: ROOSTER Start your first day in Oslo with a cup 1 of coffe at Roosters. Oslo and coffee are like gin and tonic. Why the bariste revolution choose Oslo as it´s battlefield is unclear, but we do know when it started. When John Patrick Murray arrived from Seattle in the early 90`s he came to a underdeveloped coffe city. As Americans in general he decided to act, and started Rooster Coffee in the old central station. And the rest is history. Our position as one of the more advanced coffe cities in the world is probably the main reason why Starbucks didn’t find it´s way to Oslo before this summer. Starbucks is for those who don´t truely love coffee. Oslo and Rooster are for all you the coffee afficinados.

VALHALLVEIEN Time to walk. Oslo is a compact and 2 very walkable city, and 2013 is all about the painter Edvard Munch in Oslo. The City Hall has finally decided after years of quarrelling to build Lambda - a new Munch museum in Bjørvika. There is an anniversary exhibition in town – Munch 150 – featuring the most comprehensive presentation of Edvard Munch`s art ever displayed. In additon, we advise you to walk in his footsteps. Instead of just seeing Munch’s art, you can creep into his troubled mind. Valhallveien – the road to Valhall, where the Vikings passed in death - snakes up the hillside of Ekeberg. Here you can place yourself in the world-famous painting «Scream». Munch stood here when he painted Scream, and here you can feel the paranoia of the painting and the ambivalence of living in the modern world.

SUKKERBITEN Back to the city. Oslo is proud to 3 call itself The Fjord City. Second only to Hamburg, our city is experiencing the largest harbour transformation in Europe. Outside the Opera in Bjørvika you`ll find a small funky island called Sukkerbiten (closed on monday and tuesday). At Sukkerbiten you find yourself in the middle of Oslo’s new heart. Here you can observe the new skyline called Barcode, the new Opera house, and experience the chill out-atmosphere of contemporary Oslo. Sukkerbiten is a genuine no-stress zone.

TOMBA EMANUELLE Time for culture. Most of the tourists 4 visiting Oslo head for Frognerparken and the 214 sculptures of Gustav Vigeland. If you want to experience Vigeland’s intense drama of life and death, you should visit Emanuel Vigeland’s (younger brother of Gustav) own tomb. The whole tomb is decorated with a deadly battle between Darwin and the divine God. The fresco Vita is eroticism and man’s sexual instinct, conveyed through a multitude of naked bodies, women and men in impetuous intimacy, small babies are crawling over skeletons and skulls.

FROGNERSETEREN When you’ve absorbed the Tomba 5 Emanuelle, you can take the tram to the end station of Frognerseteren. Oslo has 101 metrostations but none is located higher above the sea, at 469 meters. Here you realize that there is more nature to Oslo than any of its Scandinavian neighbours. When Clint Eastwood visited Frognerseteren in search for a loation for his new movie, he burst out: «Nobody told me that Oslo looked like fucking Vancouver!» Oslo looks more like Seattle, Vancouver or Auckland in New Zealand, where nature is in a constant battle with the people and it´s culture. According to urban legend, it was here Churchill had his his only waking moment during his stay, when his wife nudged him after lunch and said, «The port is served.»

MATHALLEN Like any European city Oslo, used to 6 be all about industry, growing from 10 000 inhabitants in 1810 to more than 200 000 people 90 years later. Most of the growth happened along the river Akerselva, separating the east from the west. Today this area is transforming itself to the creative cluster of Oslo, with art, design and architecture schools and subcultures living la vida loca. Inside Mathallen you´ll find food specialities from all over Norway and Europe, but don´t forget to take a stroll along the river. Every corner reveals unique viewing experiences. Don’t miss the gigantic swan in the river just outside the culture house Blå. Swans look good even when they’re tranformed to kitchy phallos.

TJUVHOLMEN Now it’s time to look for real swans. 7 We´re heading for the new urban district downtown called Tjuvholmen, the first burrough to be finished in the Fjord City. There you can actually swim with the swans at the new urban beach just ourside the new Renzo Piano-designed art museum. Tjuvholmen is the only placed packed with people 7 days a week, and the sun never seems to set.

LANGØYENE Only one day in Oslo has left you 8 longing for more. If you feel uplifted, then forget your hotel room and take the boat to one of the more than 20 islands in the inner Oslo Fjord. Camping is only allowed at Langøyene, but what the heck. Grab a blanket, pickup an «engangsgrill» – what Norwegians use to BBQ – and spend the night in the open air. Langøyene at night is the sound of Oslo. People making love, drinking and fighting, lovers whispering, reading poems, and spouting everyday words of wisdom. Many Oslovers spend five months on Langøyene in a small tent, playing cards and performing the art of doing nothing. Before leaving, you must take a dip in the fjord and look the swans in their eyes. You´ll soon realize whether they accept you as an Oslover or not. Be prepared to swim for your life.

CITY WALKS: HARRY HOLE’S OSLO Tuesday July 2, and all following Tuesdays. Follow Jo Nesbø’s character Harry Hole through the streets of Oslo in his efforts to put criminals behind bars. The tour will take you through many of the known places from the books about Harry Hole. Show up at Best Western Karl Johan Hotel at 5pm. ØYAFESTIVALEN Wednesday August 6 Øyafestivalen is one of Oslo’s biggest music festivals in both area and lineups. The festival presents famous international artists and bands each year, as well as the up and coming. It is located in Middelalderparken, a part of the old town in Oslo. Øyafestivalen lasts for four days and in addition to the musical experience food, stalls and activities are offered. Some of this year’s artists are Wu-Tang Clan, Kraftwerk, Blur, Rodriguez, Kendrick Lamar, Slayer, Tame Impala and Azealia Banks.

Edvard Munch and Henrik Ibsen are two of the greatest artists fostered by Norway. Both have left deep, permanent tracks in international art. They never became close friends but they are linked by several portraits Munch made of the playwright and by the artist’s motifs inspired by Ibsen’s plays. “When I read Ibsen I’m reading about myself,” claimed Munch. The Pretenders, Peer Gynt, Ghosts, When We Dead Awaken and John Gabriel all appealed to the soul of the painter, sometimes so strongly that self-portraits emanated from Ibsen’s stage characters. Edvard Munch was a huge fan of Ibsen, and Ibsen appreciated the young artist. The themes which intrigued the two intersected in a variety of ways, perhaps to their mutual benefit? Munch has been called a literary painter and as dramatist Ibsen had a highly visual style. They met on a deeper level. The Ibsen Museum’s exhibition “Masters meet. Ibsen – Munch” juxtaposes Munch’s artworks with Ibsen’s drama and initiates a dialogue between them. Munch’s motifs are experienced in a similar way as Ibsen’s drama.

OSLO CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL Friday August 9 Oslo Chamber music festival presents chamber music of the highest quality. This year’s festival consists of music from all the way back to the Middle Ages up to our time. OSLO SUMMER PARK AT TRYVANN Oslo Summer Park has a downhill cycling park, zip-lines and one of Scandinavia’s largest climbing parks. This park suits both kids with a lot of energy, and adrenalin junkies of all ages. The summer park has 120 apparatuses in the trees and different tracks with varying degrees of difficulty.

Which destinations are the most popular? – The Norwegian Opera house is very popular, as well as the Bygdøy museums and the Vigeland park. Aker brygge and Tjuvholmen are also very popular places, because of the interesting architecture and area.

Philip Straumsheim, Managing Director at CitySightseeing Norway AS is happy to explain why they have chosen these destinations. – We have chosen the destinations because they are the places most tourists wish to see. There are however some things tourists want to see that we cannot include, such as Holmenkollen, because the drive is too long.

How are the buses? – Our buses in Oslo are doubledeckers, and have room for 83 people. And to mention one important thing: people in wheelchairs have the possibility to ride with us. What does a ticket include? – The ticket includes a set route in Oslo, where one can jump off and on during the trip. The ticket lasts 24 hours, so one can start in the afternoon and continue the following day. We also have a new offer, where we offer our guests free WIFI. Many tourists are worried about Internet prices, so we are glad to be able to offer this. We also give the tourists head plugs, which

they can keep after the ride. The plugs provide pre-recorded information in eight different languages. They are: Norwegian, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Russian. What do most tourists choose to do during a ride? – It varies, what the tourists do. Some jump off, then on again with the next bus, while some just sit on the bus the whole time. The ride takes approximately an hour and a half, and the buses go every 30 minutes. What are the prices? – It costs 150 kroner for adult tickets, but you can also buy a combo ticket for 190 kroner, then you have the possibility to ride with the ferry as well. This is very popular on sunny days! We are an international company, so if you’ve taken our bus in for example Sweden, you get a 10 per cent discount on the ride in Norway.

HOW TO GET AROUND WITH PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION > Oslo offers a wide range of public transportation, and this is how you can get to your chosen destination. A lot of tourist attractions in Oslo are only a short walking distance away from one another, but if you are in need of a break from all the wandering, Ruter is a nice alternative. Ruter is the name of the public transport system in Oslo. It includes city buses, regional buses, trams, the metro, ferries and local trains. There are a couple of things you have to remember when it comes to public transportation in Oslo. An important thing is that you have to buy a ticket before you get on your chosen transportation, because the tickets cost 20 kroner more when you buy them on board. You can buy tickets from a variety of kiosks, including Deli DeLuca, Seven Eleven and Narvesen. When you travel with the metro you must remember to buy a ticket and activate it. We have made a list over what transportation to take to different popular tourist destinations. VIGELANDSPARKEN Bus: No. 20 from Jernbanetorget to Frogner plass. Although Norway is the one of the world’s most expensive countries, there are alternative ways of spending a vacation in Oslo, without going broke. Our capital has a vast variety of exciting and enriching experiences, for travellers on a budget.

TEXT SUSANNE SUNDBYE > We have decided to divide this article into different categories, focusing on things that usually cost the most, like beer for instance, and tried our best to spread some budgeting savvy. –

CHEAP BEER – A rare and lovely part of the Norwegian summer is the nighttime. The sun never seems to set, which creates a festive

atmosphere. Spend an evening out on the town, or kick back with a cold beer in one of Oslo’s many bars. We have sought out some of the cheapest places to grab a drink: Alfreds Hage: is situated right next to the Nobel Institution, at the beginning of Aker Brygge. The location is outdoors, with sofa areas, a big bar and a dance floor. The club is lit up and has a magnificent vibe, as DJ’s fill the location with upbeat tunes and the dance floor is filled with young people. A beer costs 64 kroner, a decent price in regards to Oslo’s average beer price. Fuglen: at St Olafs plass (close to the National Gallery) is a daytime café, and a cocktail bar at night. If you’re looking to

grab a drink or two before heading back to the hotel, or having a pre-drink before heading on to the next place, Fuglen is highly recommended. The location is decorated with vintage furniture, which coincidentally are up for sale if you should fall in love with the very chair you’re sitting in. But keep in mind after a couple of drinks: you break- you buy. Choice bar: located in Grønland, is a classic pub, with a humble yet festive atmosphere. It happens to be one of the cheapest places to buy a beer, which only costs 39 kroner. People of all ages gather there and listen to the jukebox, and this is the ultimate place to witness the typical Norwegian pub-life.

Café Olsen: is an intimate gathering point for all sorts of people, both backpackers and businessmen. It is not unusual spotting a Norwegian celebrity here either. The bar is in Briskeby, a short tram-ride from Majorstuen. There are benches on the outside, so guests can have a cigarette or just go out for some fresh air. Gaasa: is one of Oslo’s slightly hidden treasures, a small bar quite close to the Central Station. They serve a new brand of draft beer every week. They also have DJ’s and outdoor serving. Some days they offer grilled food, with a chef at location. Gaasa or Gåsa, means «The Goose» in Norwegian.

When you have ticked off all the boxes on your tourist to do list, it is definitely recommended just to find a park in the city, take off your shoes and let natures tongue lick your sweaty and aching feet. Oslo has multiple parks within walking distance, spread around the different corners of the city. Vigelandsparken: is definitely the most famous park in Oslo. Sculptures of naked people are scattered all over the park, along with astonished tourists. But fear not, the park is also filled with Norwegians bringing grills and picnics and breathing? in Oslo’s greatest park. Cubaparken: is located in Grünerløkka, a hip area in Oslo. Hipsters, poets and artists lay suavely over the area, along with their many admirers. The park is located no more than two minutes from Olaf Ryes plass, where nice restaurants along with vintage shops lay and wait for the customers of the day. Sofienbergparken: is not far from Cubaparken, just on the other side of Olaf Ryes plass. This park is bigger and flatter, making it a better place for games and sports as opposed to Cubaparken, which is more of a hill. Events take place in the park some days; it could be anything from a rap workshop to a line walking competition. The park is actually an old graveyard, so enjoy your barbeque while perhaps laying on an old corpse. St. Hanshaugen: has a park at the peak of the area, with a lovely view over the city. There are waters dripping through the park. On the very top of the park is a café. There is an area with rubbles and a grass area where you can do different activities. Close by are restaurants and cafés, and it’s a short walk to the very centre of the city.

A vital part of any summer vacation is naturally going for a swim. Oslo has pooling areas as well as a broad selection of beaches where you can sunbathe, have a picnic and most importantly, go for a dip. Huk: is a very popular beach at the peninsula Bygdøy on the west side of Oslo, filled with families, teens and young adults strutting around in their swimwear. At Hukodden Strandrestaurant you can grab a pricy meal or beer, or just lay in one of the couches and listen to the Café del Mar-inspired lounge music. Regardless, the summer sun setting over Oslo’s fjord makes up for the slightly long trip. Huk nudist beach: Next to Huk there is a beach strictly for nudists. Seize the opportunity to flash your private parts in a foreign country; you’ll probably never see any of these people again? But beware: a nudist beach is a nudist beach, there is no midway here, all clothes off, all body parts revealed. Ingierstrand bad: Heading in the opposite direction, there is a beach and restaurant on the eastside of Oslo, which saw its glory days in the 30s. Ingierstrand bad with its re-opened restaurant has a fresh area that offers summery meals, a nice beach and the casual entertainment. Ulvøya: is a gorgeous little beach also towards the east of Oslo, on Ulvøya. The beach is free to enter for residents of the island, but costs a small sum for outsider guests. The beach visitors are of all ages. There is a little kiosk where hot dogs and other snacks are sold. Frognerbadet: is an outdoor pooling area, which is merely a five-minute walk from Majorstuen. There are three main pools and also a water slide and diving boards for the daring. Frognerbadet is sort of an extension of the Vigeland Park, so why not kill two birds with one stone? There is a small entrance fee, weighed up by a huge outdoor area. There is also a kiosk where ice cream and other treats are sold.

Museums: To most culture-lovers’ joy, there are many museums -some free off charge- spread around in Oslo (see map for exact locations). In honour of Edvard Munch’s 150th anniversary, the National Museum and the Munch Museum have the exhibition «Munch 150», with 220 of his paintings. Free museums include the Armed Forces Museum, Oslo City Museum, Oslo Museum Workers’ museum. The Oslo fjord: Oslo has a unique fjord. A fjord trip to the different islands in the fjord is highly recommended for people who seek a maritime experience. You can take a short boat ride to Langøyene or Hovedøya and spend the day there and catch a late boat back to the city. The Norwegian Opera house: After a century of discussing back and forth, the Norwegian Parliament finally decided in year 2000 that an Opera House would be built. The project started in 2003, and the award-winning architect agency «Snøhetta» stood for the building’s design. Five years later in 2008 the Opera House was complete. The building is made of marble, which twinkles under the sun. A walk on the roof is free of charge and a lovely experience. The Royal Palace, Oslo City Hall and the Norwegian Parliament: Although the Norwegian Royal Palace is at the smaller end of the royal palace-scale, it is easy to find: at the end of Karl Johan Street. In addition, it is only a short walk to both the Parliament and Oslo City Hall. So knock yourself out and have something impressing to tell you friends back home about. The Oslo Pass: You can choose if you want a pass that lasts for 24, 48 or 72 hours. With this pass you are granted free entry to several museums, pooling areas and other attractions, as well as discounts at a wide range of tourist goodies. Public transportation is free of charge as well as parking in municipal car parks.

If you are in dire need of nutrition as soon as possible, there are of course supermarkets and Deli’s all over Oslo. You could always go for a Mc Donald’s cheeseburger, the Subway of the day or a hot dog at Seven Eleven, but if you’re not in an obese mood there are alternatives that are slightly cheaper. Considering the fact that we are in Norway. Illegal Burger: is a vintage American style burger place at Youngstorvet, where you can get a decent, and hopefully a bit healthy burger. It tastes amazing, and is only a five-minute walk from Karl Johan Street. Indian restaurants in Grønland: There are a few of these places, and they give you a classic Indian fast food meal that is very cheap. A lot of immigrants live in Grønland, so perhaps the bar is set a bit higher taste wise, because even though the food does not always look that tempting, it sure tastes delicious. Tasty Thai: is located right by Bislet Stadion. The service is quick and the food tastes just like you would expect Thai food to taste. Good. Sushi & Dinner: is also at Bislet, across the road from many Norwegian’s favourite kebab place, Bislet Kebab. So if you and your company cannot agree upon whether you want to go Japanese or Turkish, why not surprise the world and go for both. Villa Paradis: is a charming Italian restaurant at Olaf Ryes plass in Grünerløkka. The venue is charming and the food delicious, but it is a bit more expensive than the other mentioned places.

The Ibsen Museum is a literary museum which is spans three floors. The main attraction is Henrik Ibsen’s apartment, where he spent his last 11 years and wrote the plays such as «John Gabriel Borkmann» and « When We Dead Awaken». The Ibsen Museum is also part of Munch 150, and addresses the relationship between Edvard Munch and Ibsen. The exhibition features images from Ibsen´s plays illustrated by Munch. THE TIGER One of the first things to greet tourists when arriving to Oslo is a great statue of a tiger. The tiger is one of the most photographed objects in the city, and is located right outside the Oslo Central Station. The 4.5 metre long, bronze tiger was a gift from Eiendomsspar AS, one of Norway’s leading real estate companies, for the city’s 1000th anniversary in year 2000. The artist behind the sculpture is Elena Engelsen. Eiendomsspar have also contributed to the capital’s artistic scenery with a fountain called Påfuglen (the Peacock) by the National Theatre and the astrological clock in Karl Johan Street. THE TIGER CITY The Tiger City is the capital’s most frequently used nickname. The name was first used by the famous Norwegian writer and poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (who also wrote the national anthem) in his poem Godt Mot from 1870. In the poem, Bjørnson characterises the people of Oslo as bloodthirsty tigers, and for a long time the nickname was used in a negative sense. Today Oslo carries the name with pride, and associates it with strength.

AKERSHUS CASTLE AND FORTRESS The medieval castle was built in the 1290s to provide Oslo with better protection. The castle was later developed into a fortress, and was rebuilt into a renaissance castle in the 1600s. The fortress has survived many sieges, and has never been successfully captured by a foreign enemy. The fortress has a status as a national symbol due to its role as royal and governmental residency, and because of the many historical events that have taken place there. After World War II, eight Norwegian traitors were executed at the fortress. The last one was Vidkun Quisling. Today the fortress is used for both royal and official events. It is also a popular tourist attraction, and open to the public daily until 9pm. The Norwegian Armed Forces Museum and Norway’s Resistance Museum can be visited here as well. The royal mausoleum is placed within the fortress, and protects the coffins of many Norwegian royalties. OSLO CITY HALL Oslo City Hall houses the City Council and administration, as well as art studios and galleries. It is open to the public for visits and tours daily from 9am to 5pm. The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held annually in the City Hall on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. THE ROYAL PALACE The Palace was built for King Karl III Johan, but wasn’t ready until five years after his death in 1849. It consists of 173 rooms, and is made by Danish-born architect Hans Ditlev Franciscus von Linstow. The statue of Karl Johan riding a horse was made by Brynjulf Bergslien, and placed in front of the palace in 1875 – looking down on Karl Johan Street. For over a hundred years, the royal family has celebrated the National Day on May 17 by standing on the balcony, waving to the thousands

of school kids marching up Karl Johan Street and past the palace. The palace is protected by HRM The King’s Guards at all times. Every day at 1.30pm the main changing of guards takes place, and during the summer this is often presented with concerts or drill exercises. Throughout the summer season there are guided tours in the palace. KARL JOHANS GATE (KARL JOHAN STREET) The main street in Oslo got its name from King Karl III Johan, the former king of Norway and Sweden. The street stretches from Oslo Central Station to the Royal Palace. In addition to being the most known shopping street in Oslo, Karl Johans gate also includes the National Theatre, the University buildings, Stortinget (the Norwegian Parliament) and Oslo Domkirke (Cathedral). VIGELANDSPARKEN (THE VIGELAND PARK) Vigelandsparken is the lifework of sculptor Gustav Vigeland (1869 – 1943) and is the worlds biggest sculpture park made by one single artist. With more than 200 sculptures in bronze, granite and wrought iron, all of them in the shape of naked human bodies, the park is one of Norway’s most popular tourist attractions. The most famous sculpture is called The Monolith and is located at the highest point of the park. The Monolith is 17 metres tall and consists of 121 figures. Most impressively: it is carved out of one single block of granite! The park has free entrance, and is open all day, every day. GROTTEN (THE GROTTO/CAVE) Grotten is an honorary residence owned by the Norwegian Government. The house is in Swiss chalet style, and was built by the Norwegian poet Henrik Wergeland, who together with the palace architect Linstow drew the building in 1841. Since the 1920s the Grotto has given permanent residencies to honoured authors.

Eidsvollsbygningen is one of our most important national symbols, inextricably tied to constitution, independance and the dramatic events of 1814, celebrated on the 17th May ever since. Due to restoration works Eidsvollsbygningen is closed and will reopen for the bicentenary celebrations in 2014. But the rest of the museum is open.

MUNCH 150 In 2013 all of Norway will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Edvard Munch (1863–1944), one of the towering figures of modern art. The Anniversary Exhibition “Munch 150” is the most comprehensive presentation of Edvard Munch’s art ever displayed. It features major works from all periods of his life and provide an overview of his enormous output.

ONE EXHIBITION - TWO VENUES The exhibition is split into two venues. Works from 1882–1903 will be displayed at the National Gallery, while works from 1904–1944 can be experienced at the Munch Museum.

The Anniversary Exhibition “Munch 150” aims to make Munch’s distinctive contribution to modern European visual arts even more evident. Edvard Munch was artistically active for over 60 years, from his debut in the early 1880s until his death in 1944. He retained his fresh and innovative commitment to art creation throughout his life and his pictures have inspired, offended and pleased several generations. Edvard Munch will be celebrated with this presentation covering all periods and central themes of his enormous life production. A total of about 220 paintings and 50 works on paper will be exhibited. Visitors will be treated to a number of his most famous major works, but also some less renowned treasures. Among the highlights of the exhibition are the almost complete reconstructions of his picture series The Frieze of Life from 1902 and theReinhardt Frieze from 1906–07.

The works on display have been selected from the museums’ own collections and supplemented by generous loans from public and private institutions in Norway and abroad.
