Publisher’s Note

Our Staff

Dear Friends and Readers, This is a very special edition of the Guide. This 26th edition is more than just a magazine – it’s an extended reading experience! Over the last 26 years, we’ve published a great deal of lists and phone numbers about everything from real estate subdivisions to churches, hospitals, and schools. But the world is changing and we’re changing, too!

So what’s so different about this magazine this year?

The sidebars and QR Codes are designed to connect our readers to other people who share areas of a common interest such as art, crafts, music, gardening, etc. Our objective is to help our readers connect with like-minded people throughout Fayette and Coweta counties. Quick Response Codes (QR codes), when scanned by a Smartphone, will take our readers to videos where they will learn more about a particular area of interest. This magazine represents a revolutionary use of this technology. Now when you scan the hundreds of QR Codes throughout this magazine, you will hear people talk, sing, and explain the things that they are passionate about and that you want to know more about. See page 6 for a detailed explanation of how QR codes work and to understand how they are being used to improve life experiences for those who use them daily. You will also find a handy chart of our advertisers who made this new magazine possible. Use your Smartphone to scan those QR Codes to learn more about the products and services represented by our advertisers–it’s fun and you’ll be better informed–that’s a promise! After you download the app and scan those QR Codes, please share this info with your family, friends, and neighbors. Everyone needs to learn how to get the most out of their Smartphones!

More Than Just A Magazine it’s an EXTENDED READING EXPERIENCE PUBLICATION

The QR Codes found on every page of this new Guide are designed to take the reader to a new reading experience that will give them sound and action – not just words, and still photos. Here are some frequently asked questions about QR Codes: How do I use the i-nigma app to scan the QR Code? Tap the app and it opens up the scanner’s camera function. Place the QR Code in the middle of the view box and hold it steady. In about 5 to 10 seconds, you’ll hear a ding! You’ll see that a website has been acquired.

What is a QR Code? This is a QR Code. What does QR mean? QR stands for Quick Response. What does it do for me – Why should I scan it? By scanning the QR code with your smartphone, you’ll be brought quickly to a source of more information about the product or subject that you’re reading about in an advertisement or article. How do I scan it? First, your smartphone needs an app for scanning QR Codes. Our staff’s favorite is an app named i-nigma. To get a free i-nigma app, go to Apple iTunes App Store or the Android Google Play Store and search for i-nigma. When it comes up, just install it on your smartphone.

What happens next? Touch the “go to website” button and in a few seconds your smartphone will show you a video or a mobile page–within seconds, you’ll enjoy your extended video or mobile site experience! WHY SCAN THE QR CODE? By scanning the QR code, you’ll get the full value of an EXTENDED READING EXPERIENCE. Your smartphone will have all of the content delivered to you–videos, touch-and-go links to make a telephone call, or access to a web page–all at your fingertips and for as long as you want to keep it there.

Who is using Smartphones? EVERYONE – Even an elephant named Peter! To see a video of an elephant actually using a smartphone, scan the QR Code and watch the video.

Now there is a new twist that keeps the user coming back everyday – every category has “Deals & Discounts” section for local advertisers. From Shopping and Dining deals to Activities and Event Tickets – the deals will be made public via the app. Many of these deals will only be available through the App allowing people with the App to exclusive offers. The basic functions of the app connect its users to over 200 dining spots from fast food to fine dining and the more than 200 retail shops from the big boxes to specialty shops located in Peachtree City. The Events Category contains every event in Zip Code 30269 that is open to the public with 100 people or more. The Activity includes every activity in Peachtree City. The Accommodations Category has all lodging in Peachtree City. When touched, every listing puts the user in direct contact with information about the shop, restaurant, activity, or event, a map and driving directions, their Facebook; Twitter; Website; and Telephone connections – all live direct from your Smartphone. The App is updated weekly to provide you with the most up-to-date information. With the Peachtree City App you will be the one knowing what is coming up, and not learning about it after the fact. My Third Place: Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force The Dixie Wing is a place where I can work on old airplanes, learn new skills in the machine shop and hear great flying stories from other folks who love aviation. Whether we’re on the flightline, in the hangar or the shop, the guys are friendly and always willing to teach a newcomer the art of keeping the warbirds flying. I admire their dedication to honoring a generation of American heroes–and teaching this generation about their sacrifices. At the wing, I feel accepted–it’s a place I feel happy.

My Third Place: Peachtree City Golf Cart Paths

3

rd Places P laces

There are a lot of great places here, like the Farmers’ Market and local restaurants, but when I think of something I do every day, and that I cherish about Peachtree City, it’s the golf cart paths. I bicycle to work at least three times a week, more often when the weather’s warm. I also walk the paths with my wife, my kids, my mom, our dogs. We meet up with people we know on the cart paths and visit. When relatives come from out of town, they’re excited to get in the golf cart and ride along the paths, whether we’re going to Partners Pizza or just to the store. As long as I’ve been in Peachtree City, since I was 5, it’s always been a treat to ride or walk on the cart paths.

In his book, The Great Good Place, the urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg wrote about the importance of third places –the informal “public places on neutral ground where people can gather and interact.” Unlike home (the “first place”) and work (the “second place”), third places allow people to put aside their concerns and simply enjoy the company and

conversation around them. These are the places of “regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realms of home and work.” These third places are the spaces in our community that allow us to interact with people of similar interest. We are uplifted by a sense of belonging and enjoy a special quality of life outside of our work and home routine. The amount of time we spend in our first and second places (home and work) leave very little time for the social interactions that our humankind needs. We need our third places where we can “recharge our batteries” and connect with friends and neighbors. With limited time in our rush around schedules, we give little thought to our need to find our third places. Yes, we probably have more than one of these www.cowetafayetteguide.com

The BMX track is my third extended family. This is an awesome place where our family comes together to race, work and have fun every week. Nothing compares to the excitement and reward of building the track, racing the track and reliving every moto with your family of bmxers. We are there to celebrate life with all its bumps and berms.

When we begin to consider our busy lives, we recognize that our daily routine is to have our breakfast at home, get into our car, push a button to open our garage door, and drive to work. At the end of the day, we return home, push the button to open the garage door, and then close it behind us as we enter our home for a few hours of dinner, family, computer and TV.

I use my weekends and evenings to take portraits, photograph events, weddings and beautiful scenery around Fayette County and surrounding areas. It’s my way of sharing with others and helping someone to smile by capturing a memory, preserving life in that special moment in time. I also am able to restore photographs that are damaged; it’s a special task to help those that have damaged photographs due to a storm or other tragic event. You may see me around Starr’s Mill, Lake Horton and other parks–so smile and wave to me and my camera if you do!

My Third Place: PTC Tennis Center or any other tennis court I’m on!

Tennis has always played an important role in my life. I started playing junior tennis in Florida and eventually met and fell in love with my wife, Kathy, while we played tennis together. We’ve been married for 22 years and still play mixed doubles together. Tennis has always been a wonderful outlet for exercise and stress relief and has allowed me to form deep and long lasting friendships. What is said about golf certainly applies to tennis, “ A bad day on the tennis court always beats a good day at the office!”

T H I R D P L AC E S As we realize the importance of third places in our lives, it becomes apparent that third places don’t simply pertain to a geographical area; in some cases, it alludes to a group of people with a common interest other than work or home. In both Coweta and Fayette counties, you won’t have to go far to find some very special third places defined both as geographical areas and as groups of people that share a common interest.

The purpose of the Guide in 2013 is to help our readers connect to their personal third places. The Guide 2013 is designed to not only help you to find your third places through the written word, but also through your Smartphone and QR codes to give you immediate connections to these communities of special interest. If you are a newbie with a Smartphone or Tablet, you might want to read page 6 for more information on how to best use this new technology.

In order to help you think about your third places, we’ve asked some people of diverse interests and backgrounds to tell us about their personal third places and why they’re passionate about them.

[to see a brief video of each person scan each of their QR Codes. You can also see additional info and get links to important websites with even more information).

My Third Place: Newnan Theatre Company I enjoy every aspect of theatre–acting, directing and set building. The process of creating an experience for the audience as well as the actors is truly magical, and when I have an opportunity to perform or direct with young children, it becomes so much more. The joy young students fifind as they gain confi confidence in themselves and as they explore their own expressions as a character is a huge reward.

My passion since I was a child has always been aircraft and flflying. We have over seventy builder/fl builder/flyers in our group who meet at least weekly on Tuesdays at Mellow Mushroom on 74N at 11:30am. We also hang out at hangar D30 and other hangars to work on our aircraft, which include Vans RV-4, RV-6, RV-7, RV-8, RV-9, RV-10, and RV-12s. We have many social events such as cookouts, flfly-ins, giving kids airplane rides and our annual north Georgia leaf tours. You will fifind many of us in our basements and garages building new sport planes. Come join us!

Through the power of dance and fire arts, we’re able to inspire our community to become healthier while making art in motion. In addition, we perform at events and fundraisers with hopes of teaching a local class soon.

My Third Place: Sugarfoot Yarns To explain my third place, I need to explain some very important elements that need to be present for me to be content–not just happy, but content. I need creative energy, fellowship, encouragement and inspiration. Whether it is where I paint or knit, a place where all these elements come together is important to me. I’m so blessed to be able to say that all these come together at Sugarfoot Yarns. Plus it is a place I work at, play at, and own! We work very hard to make it a place where you can find “Inspiration by the Skein” with a little love and warmth mixed in.

My Third Place: Kiwanis Coweta County Fair I lived in 20 different places the first 38 years of my life. When my wife and I decided to make our home in Coweta County in 1998, I wanted to find a way to “belong” to this great community. As the Chairman of the Kiwanis Coweta County Fair, I have the privilege of working with a dedicated group of individuals who have a common goal: to provide the citizens of Coweta County with an entertaining, agricultural-based fair that raises money for distribution to charitable organizations within the County. It’s rewarding to know that our efforts over the last 5 or 6 years have resulted in close to $1 million being returned to organizations dedicated to improving the community we live in.

My Third Place: Skydiving On a recent visit, my granddaughter went for a tandem skydive. She wanted to do it again and insisted that granddad go along. While I had not planned on it, the experience was exhilarating, to say the least. At this point, I’m soloing, having completed a 7 level process known as Accelerated Free Fall training. I really enjoy the thrill of jumping into thin air at 14,000 feet and falling at 150 miles an hour for 60 seconds. Wow! It helps you focus! It’s also fun to fly the canopy. I recommend anyone try a tandem jump. 10

People Whose Second Place Is Their Third Place As we talked to people about their third places, we quickly learned that there are many gray areas. In fact, there are some people in the unique position of living the dream of working every day in their third place! That means that their third place is actually their second place, too–we call it the Mother Teresa syndrome. Here we offer our readers not only the opportunity to connect with other like-minded people, but we also give our readers examples that they might want to follow as they reach new stations in their own lives. Some of our readers may want to stoke up their passions for their third places and actually leave their eight-to-five jobs and live out their passions, enjoying their third places every day, not just when free time is available.

I’ve been drawing, painting and creating since I was able to hold a crayon. The one present I remember and treasure most was a box of oil paints and brushes, with a how-to book, that my parents gave me when I was 13. (I still have it in my studio!) When I found clay, I never looked back; it allows me to incorporate all the various genres of art into one area. I now work with glass, mixed media, and paint, and I incorporate them all into my ceramic sculptures and functional pieces. A group of us started FAACE just over two years ago with the idea that we wanted a group that focused on the business of art. We didn’t want to compete with the other great groups on the south side, we wanted to be a complement. FAACE offers workshops on “nuts and bolts” subjects to help artists move into the profit realm. And all our shows benefit a charitable group. We expect to have three to four shows this year in Coweta and Fayette counties, and we have over forty members. I’m amazed at the talent in South Metro Atlanta! My horizons have expanded tremendously through new friendships and the various learning opportunities offered through FAACE.

Just seeing the looks on their faces and watching everyone dancing and having a good time gives me a feeling of tremendous satisfaction. It’s never dull—I do everything from commercial sculpture to pumpkin carving—as well as jewelry restoration and fabrication and architectural restoration. I’m now working with Andy Gertler of Sand Sculpt USA (Sand Masters seen on the Travel Channel) making sand sculptures around the country! I love having the ability to work with my hands and make something other people will look at and treasure. Some of my favorite pieces include the restoration of the Callaway building at Emory University–or any of the pieces I’ve done for Disney. My Third Place: All-star baseball and softball (virtualcages.com) A year and half ago, I worked for a big box retailer. After I was let go after 22 years of service, I said to myself, “I’m going to do something I want to do.” I now get up every day and I actually enjoy coming to work. My business partner and I put together a great business plan. We said we have to be different than everyone else and technology is where the next generation is headed. We opened up state-of-the-art virtual batting cages with both softball and baseball virtual machines in which we can work with young girls and boys throwing 40 MPH or high school athletes throwing 90 MPH. We hired great hitting and pitching instructors to help the athletes maximize their talents. We also knew the retail aspect would be important. Instead of making everyone drive to Fayetteville or Newnan, we could meet their needs right here in PTC. My daughter and my business partner’s son play travel ball at a high level, so we also experience the joy of watching our children, as well as many local kids, get so much better because of our new facility. www.cowetafayetteguide.com

Experience The FUN!

770.617.5301 1980 Hwy 54, Suite B Fayetteville/Peachtree City Border www.drakeirishdance.com The whole idea of Third Places is about how we choose to spend our time when we’re not busy at home with our domestic duties and our families or at our workplaces earning a living. Leisure time is an important space on everyone’s calendar in our frantic, modern day lives. It’s crucial for each of us to make sure that we put aside time for those things that have meaning for us and that we can enjoy. Our job in publishing these articles and pertinent sidebars with QR code-videos is to help you scan your options and learn more about some of the many activities available in our area–and help you find something that interests you! Entertainment & Events There’s entertainment here to please everyone. Known locally as ‘The Fred,’ the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater in Peachtree City brings world class, well-loved musical acts to town. There are more than 2,500 seats, as well as picnic areas, lawn seating, and a Gold Section in front of the stage, so everyone can be part of the fun!

Nancy Price, Executive Director of the Peachtree City CVB, says that The Fred is one of those unique venues that people immediately fall in love with the first time they attend a concert or event there. From national touring acts to free concerts and family-friendly events, The Fred offers something for everyone. “Nestled amongst the trees, it’s neither too large nor too small,” she continues. “And the best part about attending a show is seeing all of your friends and neighbors here! Many times patrons tell us that the performing acts are secondary to the ‘Fred Experience.’” In Fayetteville, Southern Ground Amphitheater is set in the historic Main Street District. The whole family will enjoy the many concerts and events that rock the amphitheater throughout the season. The Southern Ground Amphitheater is gearing up for a spectacular summer season of shows and events including Vince Gill and The Spinners in June, Wet Willie with special guests The Swingin’ Medallions and The Guess Who in July, and The Bellamy Brothers in August. During the summer,

there will also be dates set for their wildly popular Chick-fil-A “Moovie” Nights! The Legacy Theatre brings top-rated shows and excellent performers to Tyrone. Upcoming productions include Tarzan and Harry the Dirty Dog. Classes and workshops are offered for children 5 years old through high school age at the Legacy Studio. Aspiring actors can learn everything from musical theater to comedy. Legacy Dance expands the instruction to ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical and hip-hop. All classes feature a nurturing, stimulating environment run by a professional, caring staff. Set on 80 acres in southern Coweta County, the Coweta County Fairgrounds & Conference Center is host to the annual Coweta County Kiwanis Fair. The 6,000 square foot Conference Center can accommodate just about any event. There is also an outdoor theater, horse arena, midway, agriculture building and nature center that features a lake, pavilion and trails. The Centre for Performing & Visual Arts, located on Lower Fayetteville Road in Newnan, boasts a 1,000-seat, state-of-thewww.guidecowetafayette.com

the area’s great talents–the Masterworks Chorale and Centre Masterworks Youth Chorale. The Great Georgia Air Show is one of the most exciting events each year. It draws crowds to Peachtree City’s Atlanta Regional Airport each fall. This year, the Air Show is slated for October 11 to the 13. Just a few of the scheduled performers are the Alabama Boys, Firebirds Extreme, the Aeroshell Aerobatic Team and the 4CE Force. Some of the featured planes include the Navy F/A 18, CAF Zero and the CAF P-51 Mustang. There’s even a Magic by Moonlight show to light up the night skies! And don’t leave the kids behind–they’ll love the balloon rides, flight simulators and inflatable playhouses. The Georgia Renaissance Festival brings out the kid in everyone with exciting shows, wild beasts, jesters and knights! Whether you want to watch the jousting while munching on a huge turkey legge or just browse through the handmade wares and sip some ale, you’ll find more fun than you expect. Mark your calendar–in 2013, the fair runs from April 13 to June 2, and is open Saturdays, Sundays and Memorial Day. The calendar fills up fast with yearlong fun. events all throughout our two county area. The Spring Taste of Newnan will be held the evening of April 18. Coweta restaurants and caterers offer their tastiest morsels all around the Courthouse. The Powers Spring Festival, April 27 & 28 in 2013, is a fun family day; it’s held at the Powers family plantation, just off Highway 34 in Newnan. On May 18 & 19, Fayetteville hosts the 45th Annual Fine Art Show & Taste of Living History; also on May 19 is the 12th Annual Taste of Fayette featuring the best of local restaurants. Memorial Day Service at Fayetteville City Cemetery is on May 27. Senoia celebrates Memorial Day with a grand parade, music and food. June 14 is the Summer Wined Up–put that date on your calendar now, and buy your tickets early. You’re invited to stroll downtown Newnan and sample wines and shop at participating merchants. The Fourth of July is a time for excitement. Peachtree City has a huge parade in the morning and ends the day with a spectacular display of fireworks. Newnan also shares its patriotic spirit with an Independence Day Parade and more fireworks! Labor Day means Powers Festival time! August 31-September 2 will have food & fun, arts & crafts. It’s been rated one of the Top 20 Events several times by the Southeast Tourism Society. Tyrone celebrates Founder’s Days on September 20-22 at Handley Park. It’s a familyfriendly event with rides, entertainment and fun foods. At the end of September, 20-29, the Kiwanis Coweta County Fair brings prize-winning agricultural exhibits, carnival rides and tasty treats to the Coweta County Fairgrounds. Watch in fall for the Inman Farm Heritage Days, held at Minter’s Farm five miles south of Fayetteville. It features a tractor show and all kinds of old timey fun. Another favorite autumn event is Peachtree City’s Shakerag Arts & Crafts Festival. The Fall Taste of Newnan & Chili Cook-off happens October 3. Also in October, on the 18th, Newnan hosts the Oktoberfest Boutique Beer Tasting. Ticket holders sip the best micro-brewed and imported beers at downtown merchants. Behind the library, Luther Holt Memorial Park has a playground designed so children of all ages and abilities can play together. The park at Lake McIntosh, Peachtree City’s third–and newest–lake, is scheduled to open to the public sometime in Spring 2013. And it’s sure to be a favorite. In addition to a boat dock, there’s a playground for the kids and a pavilion with two grills and picnic tables. Benches are situated all along the walking trails and restroom facilities are available. Just off McIntosh Trail, close to Highway 74, there’s a lot going on. Advanced Aesthetics, PC My Third Place: Playing Guitar with Gravity at The Fred When not working hard as a Plastic Surgeon at Advanced Aesthetics, PC in Fayetteville, I’m spending much of my free time with my band, Gravity. My band performs at several club/bar venues locally on the south side of Atlanta and we play all types of rock cover songs from the 60s to modern rock. My passion is playing guitar and I have done so for years, but Gravity is my first band experience with live performance and it has taken it to an entirely new level for me. My favorite place to perform is at the amphitheater in Peachtree City. Gravity played at The Fred this past September as part of a benefit concert for the Wounded Warrior Project. It was an amazing experience and for a wonderful cause. Performing in front of a large, energized audience has made the Fredrick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater my favorite Third Place.

Peachtree City Eye Center. My Third Place: Working with God’s Eyes My Third Place is working to help those in need as part of living my life in a tone of gratitude to God for His love and my Salvation. Part of this is my support of God’s Eyes, founded by Bryan Kaiser, who worked at the Eye Center for 20 years before retiring to do full time mission work. God’s Eyes is a ministry, which provides new prescription eyewear to those in need in Third World countries who are functionally blind only because they cannot afford prescription eyeglasses. We help support God’s Eyes by making a donation for every pair of eyeglasses our patients purchase at Peachtree City Eye Center since May 2009. Last year, our donations helped provide nearly 2,000 of the 10,000 pairs God’s Eyes supplied. I have been on mission trips with God’s Eyes to Nicaragua and hope to be part of many more. The looks and thanks of an adult who sees the world clearly for the first time is priceless! wellness. There are some important connections in the healthcare Industry with our concept of third places. In some cases, we find a new emphasis on the general well being of the people in our community as expressed by outreach programs that encourage proper diets and exercise programs. Also, healthcare workers–physicians, nurses, therapists–all need their third places to reenergize themselves. Piedmont Newnan Hospital Wellness Center and the Rehabilitation and Fitness Center at Piedmont Fayette Hospital feature cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, mirrored exercise rooms, locker and shower facilities. Members are guided through private, comprehensive personal fitness profiles with an exercise specialist and receive education on fitness, nutrition and health. Another important Third Place connection is the area of hospital and healthcare volunteers. Our major healthcare facilities need a steady flow of qualified volunteers to keep the facilities running smoothly. For many of the volunteers, the hospital environment is their perfect Third Place. More than 270 volunteers support Piedmont Fayette in a wide variety of service areas,

My Third Place: Piedmont Fayette Hospital Fitness Center

Vicki Turner

Going to the gym can be a difficult commitment, but not for me. From the time my feet touch the floor in the morning, I’m thinking about my fitness for the day. I’ve been a member of the Piedmont Fayette Hospital Fitness Center for several years, but needed to reset my goals. One of my dear friends and I have been walking and exercising together for years, but now we made a fitness plan together–five days a week. When I arrive at the fitness center, I hear, “Good Morning, Vicki,” as an employee greets me. I swipe my card and I’m off to the elliptical. Side by side with my friend, we work out, talk and catch up on the previous day. Sometimes we watch CNN on the big screen, but we’re always greeting more friends as they arrive. Everyone is smiling. It’s a delightful environment and my friends are an inspiration! The fitness center has become a daily destination and one of the best hours spent of my day. I would definitely recommend it to all. Remember, the more fun you have, the more likely you’ll follow through with your goals. It’s a great place to be in life!

doing everything from driving the courtesy carts and manning the gift shop to helping nurses in maternity and surgical services. At Piedmont Newnan Hospital, the Auxiliary boasts about 120 men and women who volunteer their time to contribute to the well being of patients. In addition to the Piedmont presence, Fayette and Coweta counties have many individual practitioners, clinics and health centers that are dedicated to helping area residents live healthy lives. The Peachtree City Eye Center has offered residents comprehensive eye care since 1975. Recently, the center has welcomed Dr. Punit Bhakta, originally from Biloxi, MS. He completed undergraduate studies at The University of Georgia–“GO DAWGS”–and completed his doctorate at The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry. Dr. Bhakta has been residency trained in Ocular Disease and Refractive Surgery at Woolfson Eye Institute in Atlanta. He’s been a part of Peachtree City Eye Center for about six months, where he provides primary eye care and emergency exams to residents of Fayette and Coweta counties. In his free time, Dr. Bhakta enjoys playing golf. The first class team of professionals at Advanced Aesthetics, PC has one goal in mind–to help you look and feel as good as possible. With over 45 years of combined plastic surgery experience, the doctors have worked with thousands of patients

I’ve always enjoyed sports and exercise, but now that I am in my 50s, I have to discover new ways to stay in shape. A couple of years ago, my wife invited me to her cycle class at Ultimate Fitness. Ever since then, “spinning” has been part of my routine, virtually every Monday, to start my week. Becky and I enjoy the class together, and Erica and Cheryl are amazing instructors. In addition, I learned the benefits of heart zone training, and also use my heart rate monitor whenever I run local 5K and 10K events. I love Ultimate Fitness!

A full range of services, including breast augmentation or reduction and tummy tucks, is available and they have offices throughout the southern crescent of Atlanta, including Fayetteville and Newnan. The highly qualified physicians at Lifeboat Medical Associates in Peachtree City have provided primary care for women and children since Dr. Sara O’Heron opened Lifeboat Medical in 1999. Dr. O’Heron and her staff not only offer pediatric and women’s health care, they also consult in parenting and behavioral issues, provide

developmental and ADD assessments, and offer immunizations and sports physicals. Georgia Bone & Joint provides a full range of orthopedic care at its locations in Peachtree City and Newnan. All six physicians–Dr. Powell, Dr. Ballantyne, Dr. Gruber, Dr. Kessler, Dr. Cushing and Dr. McMath–have a background in sports. They offer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation for sports injuries so they can get active people of all ages and skill levels back in the game. Georgia Bone & Joint physicians also have specialized training in the treatment of children and adolescents for injuries as well as chronic and congenital conditions.

education The high quality of public and private schools is one of the most important resources that the area has to offer. Fayette and Coweta schools provide challenging curriculum in order to prepare students for the future. Additionally, the area also offers several options for college students that wish to study in the area.

All of the statistics measuring achievement in our public schools show that Coweta and Fayette are among the highest-ranking counties in Georgia. One of the best measures of the quality of the education offered by our counties is the high rate of transfer of our students from our local high schools to colleges and universities. Another good measure is how well the local school systems use and teach the latest technologies. Fayette County schools are embracing new technology like smartphones, electronic readers and tablets. The number of handheld devices is growing rapidly and the devices often find their way into students’ book bags and pockets. Wherever you look, students are using these devices to interact and communicate with each other. Rather than asking their students to unplug, Fayette County is implementing the BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) to School program to take advantage of the technology that students are familiar with to expand and engage their learning. BYOT provides a safe location on a student virtual network and allows the devices to be used for educational purposes. Teachers are meeting students where they are, and students are literally “plugging into” their lessons.

chool

“The program was piloted last year at Whitewater High and J.C. Booth Middle,” says Melinda Berry-Dreisbach, Public Relations for Fayette County Schools. “This year, BYOT rolled out to all middle and high schools. We’re also installing wireless technology in all of our elementary schools so that the program will be implemented at that level as well.” In Coweta County, each school has two teachers that are working with the BYOT concept. Susan Nelson teaches fifth grade at Canongate Elementary School in Sharpsburg and is one of the BYOT teachers there. She reports that students bring everything from iPhones and iPads

to laptops and e-readers, and that the teachers are using electronic devices in different ways in the classrooms. Some use them every day in many lessons, some less often for just one or two subject areas.

are limited to a classroom. Homework assignments, notices and grades are posted, and students can ask for, and receive, help with problems that stump them. Teachers can even add videos that relate to their lessons.

Reading books on e-readers is very popular with students, and educational resources to support BYOT in schools are increasing. One, Edmodo, is a social media site not unlike Facebook. Used strictly for educational purposes, Edmodo is monitored by a teacher and members

Nelson says that there are still a few things that need to be addressed, like ensuring that students don’t lose or abuse the devices, but those issues will be ironed out in time. Overall the response is positive. “There’s already so much available to help our students learn

Central Educational Center (CEC) is a local solution created to solve a global problem. This partnership that links local businesses, the Coweta County School System and West Georgia Technical College was designed when local business was asked, “What do you need employees to be able to accomplish?” Survey results led to a school that serves three high schools, allows high school students (team members) to dual enroll in Technical College and participate in varied internship opportunities. The goal is to develop a more highly skilled workforce at younger ages.

Moreland Elementary 770-254-2875 145 Railroad St, Moreland, 30259

What have been the results? UGA research shows that high school students, dual enrolled in industry-focused Georgia Technical College Certificate programs, graduate on time from high school (98% on average) and succeed in the workplace or in additional college education, or in both (95% on average).

Thomas Crossroads Elementary 770-254-2751 3530 E Hwy 34, Sharpsburg, 30277

Should the program be replicated? 26 other “College and Career Academies” have begun or are being planned across Georgia. The International Center for Leadership in Education called CEC a “replicable national high school reform model” in a study funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

White Oak Elementary 770-254-2860 770 Lora Smith Rd, Newnan, 30265

What’s next? CEC will continue to change based on needs. Programs that began with “PC repair” have now developed into “programming, animation and game design.” College dual enrollment continues to grow. Now, 225 employer sites participate in internship opportunities. A robotic submarine designed, built, programmed and driven by high school team members will be competing soon. The economy drives CEC toward its mission to “ensure a viable 21st century workforce.”

When it comes to business, the latest in technology is practically yesterday’s news! Successful businessmen and women use every means available of reaching customers, closing deals and improving their goods and services. One recent innovation that’s changing how many conduct their businesses is Square. The mobile credit card reader attaches to your smartphone or tablet. Businesses of all types, sizes and locations can accept credit card payments at a low percentage rate (2.75%), no fees and next day deposits. And it can be used anywhere you can carry a phone–in stores, at home or on the road.

Square reports that it’s now processing about $10 billion in transactions annually. Big businesses, like Starbucks and Amazon, have apps for smartphones that let users shop online and stay informed about the latest deals. Local businesses have the option to use that same technology. The Peachtree City App, available at iTunes and the Android App Store, has the latest info on upcoming events and activities, but it also has a comprehensive list of where to dine, shop or stay in the area. For the business traveler, what’s more convenient than having their business tools

with them? Two of the popular business apps for phones and tablets are Dropbox, for easy remote access and back up of your documents, and LinkedIn for networking with your contacts. Service Organizations Businesses in the Fayette and Coweta county area gather together in the spirit of community service in the many local chapters of Rotary International and the Kiwanis Clubs. Other service groups represented locally include the Optimist Club, Boys & Girls Club and United Way of Coweta & Fayette.

My Third Place: Sidewalks and Roadways of Newnan As an avid runner, I spend a minimum of 5 hours each week running throughout the picturesque historic neighborhoods and unique commercial centers of Newnan. I oftentimes find myself mesmerized by the distinctive and irreplaceably built environment that serves as the backdrop to my 40 miles of weekly route running. Keeping an eye on the newest merchandise being offered by our local shops, waving hello to the friendly citizens beatifying their landscapes and admiring the community’s architectural wonders helps me kick through another long training run.

The Peachtree City Convention & Visitors Bureau, dedicated to promoting tourism in Peachtree City, has a lot of great attractions to draw visitors, like the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater and the ubiquitous cart paths circling lakes and surrounded by lush greenery. Main Street Fayetteville is one of the fastest growing Main Street programs in the U.S. Since receiving its designation in 1996, the downtown square has been restored to the city’s historic streetscape and welcomed a variety of new businesses. Throughout the 21st century, they’ll continue to retain the robust heritage and community of the city. In addition to its restoration projects, Main Street Fayetteville manages the Southern Ground Amphitheater and organizes events like the Old Courthouse Art Show, Taste of Fayette and many holiday activities. There are approximately 700 member organizations in the Fayette County Chamber of Commerce, and they work together to strengthen the community and foster economic prosperity. The Chamber also provides tools and resources to help area business connect and grow. The Coweta County Convention & Visitors Bureau works diligently to attract visitors and businesses to the county. With the area’s historic homes, plantations and gardens, the Coweta CVB has attracted a lot of interest. Film and television production crews have made themselves at home in the camera-ready community, boosting the local economy with movies like Fried Green Tomatoes and Sweet Home Alabama and TV shows that include The Walking Dead and Drop Dead Diva. Newnan also has a Main Street program that organizes such popular events as the Spring Art Walk, monthly Market Days and Taste of Newnan. Main Street Newnan is part of the Business Development Department, where business development and job creation are the order of the day, 44

My business opened in 2002 and embroidery has always been interesting to me. Through my business, I’m able to donate my embroidery talent to my church for their baby ministry, providing items to Piedmont Fayette Hospital to new mothers for their babies. I also donate my services to several nonprofit organizations by personalizing aprons and vests for their volunteers. It’s very rewarding that I can use my expertise to help those in need. Some of my favorite things to embroider are baby items, purses, blankets, sheets and pillowcases, among many other things. Personalization just makes the item complete!

Heritage Bank Adopts a Family In late October of last year, Hurricane Sandy ravaged much of the eastern seaboard. People all over the country watched the news reports and saw the horrifying video feeds that showed the storm’s devastation. One particular family that lived in Montaloking, New Jersey, an area especially hard hit, lost nearly everything they owned to the rushing waters. Fortunately, all their lives were spared, but when the storm surge began flooding their home, all they could do was grab their 16-monthold son, a new baby crib for their yet unborn child and a few small items. Once the storm had passed, so too had the world they had known just one day before. Everything was washed away, including all their clothing and kitchenware. Probably the most heartbreaking of all were the precious memories that were swept away. The baby clothes, infant photos and keepsakes from their young son were now lying in a pile of moldy rubble somewhere on the New Jersey coast. One of the truly miraculous aspects of their story is that Heritage Bank in Fayetteville took an interest in this family’s story and ‘adopted’ them over the holiday season. With the help of generous customers, $600 was raised to ease the family’s burden. When the family heard about the donations that were coming their way, the wife broke down in tears because she was overwhelmed by such a thoughtful gift from people she’d never met and who lived almost 1,000 miles away. The family did find temporary housing with some friends for a while, and are currently renting a home in a rural area. Many of their friends and family members have donated furniture, kitchen items and baby things to help them rebuild their lives. They’re getting back on their feet slowly and working their way back to solvency. There’s no doubt that things are much brighter for them since the caring staff and clients of Heritage Bank not only went that extra mile–they went an extra 887 miles to help a family in need.

Bank of North Georgia Supports the USO and our Troops Every now and then, we do something that is truly uplifting and inspiring. This year, a team at Bank of North Georgia, a division of Synovus Bank, took this to heart by choosing to support the USO and the U.S. Military as a significant volunteer initiative. On January 4, 2013, Bank of North Georgia team members had the opportunity to serve 5,300 members of the military at the USO of Georgia at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, returning from Holiday Block Leave (HBL) and headed back to the Middle East for another tour of duty. “I can’t think of a more rewarding initiative for our bank to embrace than to honor our brave, humble and courageous defenders of freedom. There are many great organizations in this city, but the ability to give back to our military is truly heartwarming,” said Anne Bell, Executive Vice President and Regional Community Executive at Bank of North Georgia. Bank of North Georgia team members purchased food items, assembled the lunch items, stuffed the lunch bags and delivered them to the USO. On that day, they made more than 350 lunches. In preparation for this initiative in December, they partnered with two Coweta County Elementary schools, Eastside and Poplar Road. The elementary school classes decorated the bags using patriotic and holiday themes. Bank of North Georgia team members who participated from our Coweta and Fayette markets include: Anne Bell, Victoria Ellison, Kim Resmondo, David Poteet, Jeffrey Pope, Lee Burns, Cindy Smith, Crystal Roberts, Jimmy Kidd, John Hall, Mark Kearsley and David O’Rear. www.guidecowetafayette.com

real estate, homes & style

Whether you are in the market for a new home, a resale, or just want to give your current home a new look, there are plenty of options in the area.

There’s no doubt

that Coweta and Fayette counties have something for everyone. Families move here for the friendly neighborhoods and top-notch schools, but all residents enjoy the many shopping centers, parks and entertainment venues, as well as world-class recreational and healthcare facilities. A wide range of housing is found throughout the region, everything from sprawling executive ranches and solidly built single-family homes to comfortable townhomes and upscale condos in the center of town. There are many live/ work/play communities that offer a simplified lifestyle. Named Fayette County Realtor of the Year in 2009, Kay McInroe of Prudential

Kay McInroe Prudential Georgia Realty My Third Place: Kiwanis

Growing up in India, I saw what a difference Kiwanis made when they teamed up with UNICIEF to work on a project to eliminate iodine deficiency. Now they are working on eliminating neo-natal tetanus in third world countries. When I was approached almost 5 years ago to join Kiwanis, I was excited about the opportunity of helping children in Fayette County. Between all the Kiwanis Clubs in Fayette and Coweta, we have a presence in most elementary, middle and high schools and have fundraisers like the Pancake Breakfast, Spaghetti Supper, Air Show, Kiwanis Fairs in Fayette and Coweta County and more. The money raised goes back to local charities. Through Kiwanis, I have met some amazing people...people I would never have had the opportunity to cross paths with otherwise. Giving back to the community is what I call home, and it’s priceless and very fulfilling. www.guidecowetafayette.com

natural gas through True Natural Gas, a Coweta-Fayette EMC company, and security services through Relyco. That’s not the end of the story, either. In 2002, Coweta Fayette EMC and 15 other EMCs in the state formed Green Power EMC with the goal of researching and providing green electricity from renewable sources like solar, wind and agricultural waste. The group has grown to 38 Georgia EMCs that work together to find answers to the increased need for energy. Newnan Utilities, a local utility company that’s been in existence for over 100 years, offers power, water and wastewater services for the residents of Newnan and Coweta County. Their goal of conducting business according to the highest ethical standards is seen in their quality service, their care of customers and their protection of the environment. In 2007, Newnan Utilities implemented a composting program to provide an alternative to landfill dumping. They also built and maintain Carl Miller Park, a 14-acre park that features pavilions, walking trails, picnic table and several playgrounds, including the kid-favorite castle playground. While you’re making the move to your new home or office, you’ll need the help of Mobile Storage Depot. They deliver a storage vault right to your door or parking space, and let you take all the time you need to load it up personally and lock it securely. Then your vault will be safely stored in a clean warehouse until you’re ready to have it delivered to your new location. What could be simpler? Easy to find on New Hope Road in Fayetteville, Fayette Self Storage is Fayette County’s first and largest self-storage facility. Owner of Atlanta Market Furniture & Accessories My Third Place: Atlanta Market Furniture & Accessories I gathered in the remains of a Peachtree store 5 years ago and in a few short months, I redirected the establishment. It has grown into a 15,000 square foot unique and classy store focusing on home décor, open six days a week. Today, our customers come from Macon, Griffin, Lagrange, and north Atlanta to find quality furniture, customized floral arrangements, oils paintings, prints, lamps and an endless array of ceramics. Each room is decorated just as you would find in your home, rather than warehoused on shelves. A staff of trained decorators offer low key suggestions to customers requesting assistance–otherwise, we invite customers to browse to their hearts’ content and enjoy the music!

Candles

Use scented candles or air fresheners to create a signature scent in your house. You may want to stay with a favorite aroma or change out the scents several times a year to match the season. Try evergreen for winter, lilac for spring, seaside for summer and pumpkin pie for autumn.

Family Photos Get creative with pictures that are gathering dust in boxes. Group several candid photos of children together in a variety of frames and place them on a table corner. Or mix older sepia prints of greatgrandparents with recent snapshots of your family¬ and hang them on a blank wall to bring it to life.

Words to Live By Do you have a favorite saying, song lyric or Bible verse? Use wood or vinyl letters to spell it out on your wall. If you have a steady hand, paint those words of wisdom over a doorway or fireplace.

Meaningful Mother’s Day Gifts Mucklow’s Fine Jewelry is continuing their six-year tradition of giving children the opportunity to create beautiful jewelry as Mother’s Day gifts. The pieces are made of precious metals and crafted by children for their mothers, with the help of Mr. Mucklow and his staff. “The experience becomes part of the gift, which the children share not only with their mothers at the presentation on Mother’s Day, but also with the fathers, grandparents and significant individuals that accompany them to the event,” explains Jessica Rossomme, Mucklow’s Fine Jewelry Director of Operations. The beauty and value in these pieces run deep. Not only is the jewelry a family keepsake, but the proceeds from the event also benefit families in the community. Part of the money collected for each item goes to Promise Place, a non-profit organization that provides assistance to victims of domestic violence and their children throughout Fayette, Spalding, Pike and Upson counties. Since 2009, Mucklow’s has presented Promise Place with more than $5,000 in donations. I have the greatest time connecting with all kinds of folks, from neighbors, farmers, foodies and athletes to musicians. I love to see people stroll through with their dogs, strike up a conversation with a stranger and watch a common ground emerge. Folks open up and share recipes as they talk to the farmers and each other. I love to sip a cup of tea and just watch the day unfold from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. It creates positive energy and good food–the greatest denominator for all walks of life. the coweta-fayette guide 2013

“The Shrimp” is simply the best place I know for great food, music and camaraderie. So much more than just a seafood restaurant, it’s like a second family made up of employees, musicians and regular customers who gather together almost every night to celebrate the joys of life. I consider myself very lucky to be able to create music for a living, and at The Shrimp, I get to do it with some of my dearest friends. Another great thing about our family is there’s always room for more members. It just doesn’t get any better than that!

Worship

WO R S H I P

The area is home to plenty of churches there’s a perfect fit for everyone.

Our purpose in this edition of the Guide, as defined in the first pages of this book, is to help our readers in Coweta and Fayette counties to connect to other people of similar interests. In that context, the Guide is one of the few publications that has included a complete list of Places of Worship over the past 25 years. Churches enable people who share similar religious beliefs to gather together and worship together. The result of their participation with other like-minded people is fellowship and a sense of calm and restoration of spirit after a busy week of meeting the demands of work and home. Many people seek out a church for many of the same reasons that they seek out a coffee shop, bar or bridge group–attendance is voluntary, people know your name and you receive support, to name just a few. No matter what religion you embrace, we will continue to include a comprehensive list of places you can visit.

Marta McGlade My Third Place: Annual “Dia de la Familia” Health Fair, March 16, 8am-12noon We are so joyful to be able to offer screenings for breast cancer screenings, cholesterol, diabetes, HIV and more completely free of charge. Colgate-Palmolive sends a van to do dental check-ups for children and Fayette County Health Department does hearing and vision checks for children getting ready to start school in the fall. Peachtree City police, firemen and paramedics play a crucial part in this event by educating young and old in proper safety. Other groups such as United Way and Head Start are here to make the community aware of free services they provide. For more info, please call 770-487-5352. Everyone is welcome!

3rd Places

Phyllis Avrit My Third Place: Fayette Pregnancy Resource Center I want to make a difference in peoples’ lives and my heart has always been drawn to the ministry within the doors of pregnancy centers. It’s a place where the focus is on saving two lives: the physical life of the baby and the spiritual life of the mother. Pregnancy centers are pro-life organizations that offer free pregnancy tests, counseling and a baby clothes closet for the local community. It’s incredible to see lives transformed and to build relationships and friendships with our clients.

ORSHIP

Rev. Dr. George Dillard

My Third Place: Starbucks I don’t really have any hobbies or interests outside of my family and the church. I come from a time when church leaders were plugged into their community, so I guess I’m a pretty boring person. The only other place I go regularly is the Starbucks at the Avenue in Peachtree City--I’m there just about every morning of the week. I feel kind of like Norm walking into Cheers! I go there to see friends and enjoy the conversation. It’s one of my connecting points. In fact, there are a bunch of people there that call themselves my pseudo-congregation.

It has all streets, athletic fields, parks, neighborhoods and public facilities such as the library, city hall, fire stations and police stations. Also included are all shopping areas and schools. Streets and neighborhoods are listed separately on the front of the map, making it easier to read. Important additions on this map include private golf cart paths, bike routes, PTC Running Club’s 10K Route and the Independence Day Parade route. Advertise in the Rotary Smart Directory for All the Right Reasons! The Right People Still use Phone Books Baby-Boomers & Seniors (home owners & “high earners”) still use Phone Books to purchase services and products. People who use Phone Books are Ready to Buy When someone picks up a phone book because their toilet won’t flush, they are motivated to buy – not to browse! The Rotary Smart Directory is Affordable Prices start at less than $300 during the Early Bird Savings campaign, and we offer terms to spread out the payments to make it even easier.
