The six tourist regions are ready to stage captivating events >> The State of Rio de Janeiro has been sung in verse by artists and poets alike and welcomes everyone with a smile on their face. Metropolitan Region >> “Wonderful City, full of charm...”. This is how the Rio de Janeiro city Hymn, by André Filho, begins. It characterises the attractive mosaic of the entrance to Brazil and also the joy of the local people who are referred to as “cariocas”. The locals have an affable way of welcoming visitors and they have given the city the title of “happiest people on earth”. It has the blessing of the statue of Christ the Redeemer, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World that, from the top of Corcovado Mountain, opens his arms out over the beautiful Guanabara Bay. Its beauty continues to inspire singers, poets and painters, transforming the area into a reference point for artistic, cultural parades and political protests.

One of the most important metropolises in South America, the state capital has been the capital of the Colony, the Empire and the Republic, and has a plethora of historical buildings, such as the Paço Imperial (Imperial Palace), fortresses and hundreds of churches and temples. The views of Sugarloaf Mountain, the Botanical Gardens, Copacabana beach and the Tijuca National Park, among many others, have continued to delight tourists for decades. In 2012, the city was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Status in the urban cultural landscape category. Other trademarks of the city include Carnival, Samba and Bossa Nova as well as its main gastronomic symbol, Feijoada (bean stew), accompanied by the traditio-

nal caipirinha. Its hundreds of bars and restaurants come alive at night, filling the streets of Lapa and Santa Teresa with a bohemian atmosphere. There is an intense cultural agenda that occurs throughout the year, culminating with a big New Year’s Eve party on Copacabana beach. Niterói, the final city that completes the Metropolitan region is located across Guanabara Bay from Rio. A 13km bridge links the two cities, but there is also a ferry service connecting the two. It has secular fortresses, beaches like Itacoatiara and Camboinhas and various viewing platforms. The Niemeyer route shows off some of the work created by architect Oscar Niemeyer, including the Museum of Contemporary Art.

and enjoy a fondue at night in the mild climate of the mountains. In this special pullout, we present some of the main tourist attractions in the six regions of the state: Metropolitan, Green Coast, Sun Coast, Coffee Valley, Imperial Green Mountain and Agulhas Negras (Black Needles). Welcome to Rio de Janeiro!

>> The famous state capital will host the 2016 Olympic Games and it will stage the 2014 FIFA Football World Cup Final. According to the annual rankings of the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA), Rio de Janeiro is the Brazilian city that hosted the most international events in 2012, with 83 congresses and conventions within the ICCA criteria (itinerant events with a fixed period and a minimum of 50 participants), which puts Rio in 25th place in the world city ranking. The metropolis boasts convention centres of various sizes and many hotels with meeting rooms. It also offers great technological resources and good access to ports, airports and bus stations by subway, bus services and a large taxi network.

Confederations Cup - Altogether there were 16 games and a final that couldn’t have been dreamed up by a screenwriter. But, much more than watching the Brazilian team beat the best team in the world on the biggest stage in National football – the Maracanã there were other fruits to be harvested, especially in Tourism. To begin with, the final of the Confederations Cup, in which Brazil beat Spain 3-0, about half of the nearly 80,000 fans that attended the game were from outside of Rio de Janeiro. A survey by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism pointed out that about 25,000 foreigners visited the country during the 15-day event. A small number compared to the 600,000 that are expected for the FIFA World Cup, but the opinion of those visitors is a good thermometer to point

out if we are on the right track. This was indeed the goal of a survey commissioned by the Ministry to the Foundation Institute of Economic Research (FIPE). According to preliminary results, the majority of foreigners approved of the infrastructure of the host cities, including Rio de Janeiro. WYD - Another major event held this year was the World Youth Day, which brought thousands of foreign visitors to Rio. The first foreign trip of Pope Francisco turned all eyes turn in to the Wonderful City, highlighting the destination as the hub for Religious Tourism. The World Youth Day (WYD) attracted 2 million people to Rio de Janeiro. The highlights were the passage of the Pope along Copacabana beach and the Mass held in Vargem Grande.

Cataguazes Islands in Angra dos Reis, Lopes Mendes in Ilha Grande and Paraty

>> The Green Coast, located on the southern shoreline where Serra do Mar (Sea Mountain) meets the Atlantic, is formed by the cities of Angra dos Reis, Paraty, Mangaratiba, Itaguaí and Rio Claro. This area was one of the first to be colonized in Brazil and has more than two thousand beaches, some semi-deserted, a multitude of islands and mountains covered by Atlantic Forest. It is also rich in historical and cultural heritage and has an excellent hotel infrastructure, with large seaside resorts and places for fishing, diving and sailing. The local cuisine is seafood based, with inspiration from indigenous cooking, for example fish with banana. Angra dos Reis has 365 islands and a very busy shopping centre as well as modern malls and a large marina. There are

varied options of accommodation, hotels, resorts and guest houses, and attractions such as boat rides, nature trails along rivers and waterfalls, water sports, as well as abseiling, mountain biking and rafting. It also has a good range of restaurants and is an obligatory stop off for the large cruise ships that sail past this region. Ilha Grande (Big Island), close to Angra dos Reis, is a tourism icon of the region. It has trails, waterfalls and creeks, like the Blue Lagoon, and several beaches, especially Lopes Mendes, Aventureiro and Saco de Palmas. In the central region, the small city of Abrahão has many restaurants and guesthouses, and also several agencies that offer boat tours. The island can be accessed by boat, catamaran or barge, from the ports

of Angra dos Reis, Jacareí and Mangaratiba. Paraty is different to Angra as it is an historical city with unique beauty due to its colonial mansions and cobbled stone streets. It boasts a calm water bay, surrounded by the rich vegetation of the National Park of Serra da Bocaina, where there is still a stretch of the Estrada Real (Royal Road), and the old gold route. There are international restaurants and excellent hotels. The cachaça here is one of its greatest icons. The destination grinds to a stop when it hosts the annual Paraty Literary Festival (FLIP), which attracts artists from around the world. Be sure to visit the Trindade community, which is 17 km from Paraty. Its incredibly beautiful beaches, such as Meio (Middle), and the unspoilt nature are waiting for you.

Fountain in Vassouras; Javary lake, in Miguel Pereira; historic farm, in Valença

Coffee Valley Region >> The Coffee Valley Region, within the state, is known for its large and historical farms, a rural architectural legacy left by the coffee industry which was the main product of the Brazilian economy in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its major tourist cities are Valença, Vassouras and Miguel Pereira. It is possible to visit the preserved buildings where the coffee barons once lived and a tour of the slave quarters takes you into the historic and cultural heritage of the area. The cuisine also dates back to colonial times. Bringing together history and gastronomy, the municipalities have invested in events like “Café, Chorinho and Cachaça”, which includes visits to historic farms and has various gastronomic tours. In the bucolic Miguel Pereira is Javary Lake, which is ideal for pedalos and small boat rides. The local crafts, the cachaça, as well as paragliding in the hills and mountains are local attractions. >> One of the most beautiful regions in the state is located in the Imperial Green Mountain range. The major cities are Petrópolis, Teresópolis and Nova Friburgo. During the summer, the freshness of the mountain air reduces the effects of the heat. In winter, it is a good time to enjoy the warmth of the fireplace, good wine and top-notch gastronomy. You can purchase various souvenirs, especially textiles and a visit to one of the breweries always generates interest. The region is the birthplace of mountaineering in Brazil in the National Park of the Serra dos Órgãos. It has excellent hotels and spectacular scenery crossing between Petrópolis and Teresópolis, The food here boasts a variety of exquisite dishes, influenced from the German and Italian colonies that once populated the region. One of the most traditional events in the region is Petrópolis Gourmet. Known as the “Brazilian Switzerland”, Nova Friburgo has a mild and pleasant climate, plus great food and hospitality, which includes fondues and raclette. Many people go to the city to buy lingerie and flowers that are important products of local trade. Among the tourist attractions are the Pedra do Cão Sentado (Dog Sitting Stone) and Praça das Colônias

(Colony Square). Horse riding, hiking and bathing in one of the many waterfalls are highly recommended. Tourists should take the opportunity to visit Lumiar where there is music, regional cuisine and waterfalls. Petrópolis was founded in 1843 by Emperor D. Pedro II, so the Imperial Family could take refuge from the intense summer heat. A combination of heritage and ecotourism exist here. The main attractions are the Imperial Museum, the Cathedral São Pedro de Alcântara, the Crystal Palace, the Quitandinha Palace and the House of Santos Dumont. The surroundings offer a sophisticated gastronomic tour, mainly in the district of Itaipava. Another highlight is a visit to the Barão de Itaipava Castle and the Bohemia and Itaipava breweries. In Teresópolis, you can’t miss Granja Comary, where the Training Centre of the Brazilian Football Federation is situated, and the National Park of Serra dos Órgãos. While Petrópolis means the city of Pedro (Pedro II), Teresópolis is the city of Teresa (Teresa Cristina, Pedro II’s wife). The pleasant climate and beauty of the valleys and mountains charmed the Imperial Family and it still attracts tourists today.

Editorial Brazil and England united by tourism and their passion for football The number of British people visiting Brazil has been increasing steadily. In 2011, there were 149 564, in 2012, 155 548. With figures like this, the UK naturally features on a priority list of promotable markets for the Brazilian Tourism Institute (Embratur), which is responsible for selling the Brazil brand abroad. With less than two months before the end of the year, the expectations of growth are high, not only in 2013, but mainly in 2014, the year of the FIFA World Cup. According to research by the flight search website Skyscanner, England had the biggest increase in ticket searches by people wishing to go to Brazil, during the World Cup period. Even before England’s qualification is certain, England fans have already shown their confidence that their national team will be present at the games, with an increase of 1,208 % in the number of searches for flights to Brazil in June next year. Thinking about this, we decided to toast the British readers and tourism professionals with an edition that delivers some details of this mega event that is scheduled for next year. The games will be held in 12 host cities and spread across all regions of Brazil, from the north to the south and from the east to the west. In this edition there are reports from each of the host cities on their preparation and which tourist sights you, or your clients cannot miss seeing between the games. In June this year, Brazil showed its potential when it hosted the Confederations Cup. According to a survey organized by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, 75.8% of the international visitors who attended the event said they intended to return for the World Cup. Visitor’s expectations regarding their trip to Brazil were generally met or exceeded, according to the declaration of more than 70% of respondents. The most popular parts of their trips that were surveyed were the hospitality of the people (32.9%), beaches and natural beauties of the country (25.6%) and the stadiums (20.5%). In the Brazilian booth at WTM you will find the mascot of the 2014 World Cup, Fuleco and lots of information about the Fan Fests that will take place all over the country. For the many supporters that cannot get tickets to go to the matches, then they can have fun and cheer on their team in places properly set up for football fans. For lovers of sport and tourism, there is no better time to visit Brazil.

Preparations are at an advanced stage with the stadiums in the final phases of construction as well as other projects that will help supporters access the stadia and the movement of tourists within the cities. The rehearsal for the big event, the Confederations Cup, took place earlier this year and was considered a great success for Tourism. The event brought together eight teams from 15th to 30th June and games took place in six of the 12 host cities that will stage the FIFA World Cup next year. While players like Neymar, from Brazil; Iniesta, from Spain - voted the best player of Euro 2012, and the controversial Mario Balotelli, from Italy, paraded their talents on the pitch, about 250,000 tourists circulated throughout the country with approximately 20,000 were foreigners. This result is within the initial expectation initially laid out by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism. The average length of stay was 14 days, according to a previous survey conducted by the Institute for Economic Research (Fipe). The study was commissioned by the Ministry of Tourism and surveyed the Brazilian and foreign visitors who attended the event. According to preliminary results, the majority

of foreigners approved the infrastructure of the host cities: 83.1 % rated taxi services as good or very good, cleaning, 78.3 %; public safety, 71.7 %, tourist signs, 62,9% and telecommunication and internet, 53.6 %. Public transport, before the tournament, was noted as one of the main problem areas but it seems to have passed the test, since 61.5% of respondents rated the distance to the stadium positively and 81% liked the organization in general. EMBRATUR estimates that tourists spent at least R$ 311.5 million in the six host cities. However, it is thought that the indirect impact is even greater, since this amount only considers the costs of hotels, food and small daily expenses. The country also had the opportunity to show itself to the world, since the final of the Confederations Cup beat the audience record. The final was seen by 69.3 million people in ten of the main markets. On the field the result could not be better. In the stadiums, the average audience per game was the highest of the last five editions of the tournament and the second highest in history, according to a survey by marketing consultant sports Amir Somoggi. In total 796,000 people saw the games in the stadiums, which gives an average occupancy rate of about 80%.

>> A combination of mountains and sea has created some stunning backdrops in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The views from the top of the mountains and peaks bring the city to life and really show its colours. From the top of Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf and Pedra da Gávea you will feel the exuberance of the green forests, blue sea, white sands and many other contrasts that have resulted from the mixtures of landscapes, buildings and people. From sea level, the sensation is that the hills embrace Rio de Janeiro and its beautiful beaches. Along the coast, life pulsates on promenades and bike paths through the charming Copacabana, Leblon, Ipanema, Flamengo and Botafogo neighbourhoods. People walk, cycle, play sports and take in the scenery. At night, the arches of Lapa are a gateway to the bohemian nightlife and during the day, in the city centre, the former capital of the empire holds many stories. The pacification of some of the largest slums in Rio, such as Rocinha, Dona Marta and Complexo do Alemão, have given some respite to the fear that many visitors have. Today, visits to the communities are possible whereas before they were forbidden.

The most popular tour at the moment is the cable car ride over Complexo do Alemão, where you can see a sprawling metropolis of clusters upon clusters of houses. Tourists can ride alone or with guides who can be hired in a booth at the station and they charge per person. From up high, the tour promises to show the places where major police clashes occurred during the pacification and also the pavements where scenes from the soap opera “Salve Jorge” was filmed, which helped make the residents transportation famous amongst tourists. If the idea of getting to know the inside of these communities appeals, then tourism agencies offer tours called “Slum tour” to Rocinha, the largest community in Rio, and to Dona Marta, famous for being the set for a video clip of one of Michael Jacksons hits. A minibus picks you up from your hotel and takes you to the entrance of the slums. From there, along with the guide, the route passes by the main points within the community through the alleys and even into people´s houses. The bedrooms will turn into viewing platforms and you will be able to see Rio from a very different angle.

Rio will host the World Cup final!

>> If Rio de Janeiro has became well known for its traditional hospitality and happiness, then international tourists who have plans to visit or revisit Rio, for leisure or business, will surely be amazed at the improvement in the city’s infrastructure. The changes will be seen straight away after landing at Tom Jobim International, also known as Galeão, which is one of the main airports in the country. The transport system has also received new investment. The federal government has provided nearly R$ 30 billion to improve the quality of transportation in major cities. In Rio, urban mobility is being improved with the construction of specific bus lanes, subways and trains. Travel time is already being reduced throughout the city and about two million passengers will use the services daily. The goal is to double the number of public transport users by 2025. The deadline to finish construction is the 2016 Olympics. The BRT (bus rapid transit) system will be expanded with new lines before next year, linking the airport Galeão to other parts of the city. Maracanã Stadium will host seven matches, including the grand final of the World Cup. After undergoing major renovation, the stadium was reopened and hosted games in the Confederations Cup, including the final between Brazil and Spain and now offers greater comfort. Besides the new roof that protects 95% of the seats, the stadium has five different types of seats distributed throughout the stands, there are special, premium, boxes and grandstand seats, and with new restaurants, stores, 60 bars (more than double than before) and 231 toilets, 67 of them with disabled access in various parts of the complex.

The complex, formed by the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, Museum of Art, House of the Dance and the Yacht Tennis Club, was created in the 40s. The buildings were designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer, that along with panels by Portinari, gardens by Burle Marx and sculptures by Ceschiatti, Zamoiski and José Pedrosa, form an harmonious space between modern and audacious. More recently other attractions were added to the complex, such as the Mineirão stadium, Mineirinho, Ecological Park of Pampulha, the São Francisco River Basin Aquarium and the newest attraction, the House of Kubitschek, who was mayor of Belo Horizonte in 1940, governor of Minas Gerais in 1950 and President of Brazil from 1956 to 1961. The most famous stadium in the state of Minas Gerais is the Governador Magalhães Pinto Stadium (Mineirão). It is the reason why Belo Horizonte was chosen to be one of the host cities for the 2014 World Cup.

The build up to 2014 >> Several investments have been made to prepare the state capital for the FIFA World Cup 2014. The projects developed for the event are designed to empower and prepare professionals in important areas, providing an extensive cultural and gastronomic range, besides improving the local infrastructure to ensure quality and sufficient services to those who will visit the city. Released in April, the website www.belo2014.com. br is one of the projects run by the Belo Horizonte Department of Tourism that is focused on the event. The Minas Gerais Department of Tourism also released, in three languages (Portuguese, English and Spanish), the Official Guide for Supporters, which was distributed during the Confederations Cup. The 127 page guide, offers complete information and detailed maps of Belo Horizonte, thus, tourists have everything they need on hand to plan their time in the state capital and in the other 10 cities: Brumadinho, Congonhas, Diamantina, Mariana, Ouro Preto, Pedro Leopoldo, Sabará, São João Del-Rei, Serra do Cipó and Tiradentes.

The capital is also investing in many new road signs. For the Confederations Cup 68 new signs were erected, which in addition to indicating the whereabouts of the main tourist attractions in Pampulha, give information about the history of the attractions in three languages. As for the World Cup, the goal is to put 104 more around Belo Horizonte. The prediction for the World Cup is that a total of 150 hotels and 31,240 beds will be made available for tourists. From 2007 to 2010, the main airport in Minas, Tancredo Neves/Confins International Airport showed an increase in traffic of 18.93% per year, from 3.4 million passengers per year to 7.2 million. To improve services to passengers it has ensured the expansion of Terminal 1. The project for the World Cup includes the construction of at least half of the Terminal. This terminal will have capacity for ten million passengers per year. So with 50% of the work completed, the airport will be able to accommodate 13 million passengers per year. With the expansion of Terminal 1 and after the construction of Terminal 2, the capacity of the airport will be 18.5 million passengers.

HOST CITIES ( SÃO PAULO )

Aerial view of São Paulo, Colégio Páteo and Corinthians Arena, which will host the first match of 2014 World Cup

Attractions in the city go beyond the World Cup >> Tourism in the city of São Paulo is predominantly business related. Large hotel chains, whose target audience is the corporate sector, are spread throughout the city. Cultural tourism also has a bearing on São Paulo, especially when taking into consideration the various international events that take place in the city (the Arts Biennial, the International Film Festival and many shows featuring famous celebrities). The “city of mist”, as it is popularly known, has an average of one event every six minutes. In 2010, tourism in São Paulo achieved a new record, as the city welcomed 11.7

million tourists. In 2012, there were 12.9 million, with 10.8 million domestic tourists and 2.1 million foreigners, according to the Ministry of Tourism. The city consolidated its position as the main gateway for foreigners coming to Brazil, which generated R$ 10.2 billion for the city. Out of the 9 million domestic tourists to the city, 25% are from the state of São Paulo, followed by people from the state of Minas Gerais. Among the foreigners, Americans and Argentineans visit the city the most. So this is São Paulo. It does not sleep; it does not rest. With architecture that

combines a variety of styles, shapes and sizes, the city has real cultural heritage. Take a walk around the city centre and you will witness its history being told by its buildings, concrete structures and the transformations it has undergone since it was a village of just 30,000 inhabitants in 1872. It was restricted to the Historic Triangle (whose pinnacles are the Monastery of St. Benedict, the Church of San Francisco and the Church of the Third Order of Carmel). The current number of inhabitants in this metropolis is now over 12 million. Portal da Copa / September 2013

Accelerated construction ensures the city will be ready for the World Cup Jefferson Pancieri

>> Everything is nearly ready in São Paulo. The Corinthians Arena, which will host the opening game of the World Cup in 2014, has passed initial safety checks and will soon have its technical inspection. Scheduled to finish before the end of December, the stadium is 86% complete. The vice-mayor of São Paulo, Nádia Campeão, said that the completion of the site later this year is essential for national games to be held early next year in order to test the accessibility and the movement around the stadium. In addition to the Opening, the Corinthians Arena will host three first round matches, one of the quarterfinal and one semi-final. São Paulo is the largest city in the southern hemisphere and has many bold projects for the FIFA World Cup, but today it is a city that is fully prepared in several important areas. With respect to accommodation, the city has 42,000 hotel rooms, and this will reach 50 thousand rooms in 2014, according to estimates from SPTuris. To get an idea, FIFA requires 50,000 rooms across the country. In the state that number grows to 180,000 rooms. The Vale do Anhangabaú, in central São Paulo, currently hosts major cultural presentations and is being prepared to host more than 40,000 spectators during the FIFA Fan Fest, an event that will show the games of the 2014 World Cup. It has fundamental importance in the development of the country’s largest city, as it faces the challenge of sustaining its position not only in major events but in other areas too. The Anhangabaú was chosen to host the Fan Fest due to the central location and easy access to public transportation (train, metro and bus).

>> Known as Sun City, Natal - the capital of Rio Grande do Norte, it is a modern and cheerful city, which was built between the rivers here and the sea. Natal is graced by dunes and green areas and offers visitors summer all year round, with more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Its nature is lush and its people hospitable, which are features that make the city one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. There are more than 400 km of Atlantic Coast and 20 paradisiacal beaches. During the day, the big attraction is the Morro do Careca (Bold Hill), a dune that is 120 metres high and surrounded by greenery. It is located on the urban beach of Ponta Negra, about 14 km from the city centre. Ponta Negra is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in north-eastern Brazil and its name comes from the dark rocks that surround it. Another obligatory place to visit is Forte Beach, where the Three Kings Fortress (Fortaleza dos Reis Magos) with its ancient walls and cannons is found. The sunset here is also spectacular. In the city of Extremoz is one of the main picture postcards in the State: Genipabu Beach. Here, visitors experience one of the most beautiful regions in Brazil, with dunes up to 30 metres high. These dunes are considered to be the highest in the country and buggy rides are very famous and popular in the region. Pipa, in the other hand, is the “hottest” of all. It is considered one of the ten most beautiful beaches in Brazil and is located in the biggest ecological sanctuary in the state in Tibau do Sul. There are beaches with clear and warm water, palm trees, natural pools, cliffs covered by Atlantic Forest, white sand dunes, coves and cliffs.

Arena das Dunas is scheduled for completion in December 2013 With construction work gathering pace, the renovation of the stadium in Natal is among the most advanced for the 2014 World Cup. The Arena das Dunas is 88.05% completed and more than 1,800 labourers are working in three shifts to deliver the stadium before the 30th of December. even before the expected date. Right now, the metal roof is being installed. Three of the 20 “petals” that will form the framework are have already been installed and the fourth began its assembly in the area west of the stadium recently. The other 16 pieces have arrived at the construction site and once assembled, they will receive a coating of steel and carbon. The bidding process for the installation of the temporary

seating is underway and there is sufficient time for its completion. The temporary terraces will allow the arena to have a capacity of 42,000 people during the World Cup. After the event, the stadium will be reduced to 32,000 spectators. Natal is in a privileged position in relation to Europe, and its challenge is to complete the airport before 2014. Another major test is to solve infrastructure problems, such as urban mobility.

>> Launched over 50 years ago by the then President Juscelino Kubitschek, Brasília is the main national reference of progress during the past half century, guided by the motto “50 years in five”. The federal capital is a destination filled with modern tourist attractions. Brasília is embedded in national history by being the third capital that Brazil has had since the country’s independence from Portugal in 1822. Salvador held the title during the sugar cane period (until 1763), and Rio de Janeiro until Brasília took over its mantle. Brasília was the only one of the three cities that was planned to be a political centre, with the project being designed by Lúcio Costa and architectural monuments designed by Oscar Niemeyer, who was the symbol of national architecture before he died in 2012. Among the creations created by Niemeyer are the Esplanada dos Ministérios (Ministries Esplanade), where the 39 ministers of the current government of

November 2013

Dilma Rousseff are located, and the Praça dos Três Poderes (Three Powers Plaza), where representatives of Executive, Legislative and Judiciary powers work. These places are now part of various tours around the city due to its obvious political importance. Designed in the shape of an aeroplane, Brasília has several attractions spread out over nearly six millions square kilometres. Even with its political locations, like the Presidential Palace (seat of executive power) and the Palace of the Foreign Ministry, which houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brazil, certain touristic areas can be found. Besides the places mentioned, tourists have options to go to the famous JK Bridge, opened in 2002 and formed by a structure of 48 steel cables which are attached to three arches. It is one of many projects by Niemeyer in the city. The Metropolitan Cathedral of Brasília is a classic creation by the architect as its lines and curves were made using 16 concrete columns.

>> Since Brazil was chosen as the host country for the 2014 World Cup – a decision that was announced in 2007 - several cities began arranging projects from the funding created by the biggest mega sporting event in the world. The federal capital was not left out, and after tough competition, Brasília was chosen as one of the host cities for the tournament along with eleven other Brazilian cities. The certainty about hosting some of the games (including the match for the third and forth place play off ) accelerated the projects necessary to bring the city up to the relevant “FIFA quality standard”, especially in and around the stadiums. Focusing just on this tournament, the Mané Garrincha Stadium underwent total renovation to renew and modernise it. After more than a thousand days of building work, the new arena was recently opened and passed its initial test during the Confederations Cup. The National Mané Garrincha Stadium now has a capacity of up to 71 thousand, and as Brazil’s first match in the first round of the tournament will be here, all eyes will be focused on this modern spectacle. The new multipurpose arena is 6 km from the Three Powers Square and will also be used to host shows after the World Cup. Not only stadiums for the games are needed to prepare for an event of this size. To be able to accommodate tourists with style and quality,

The Central Public Market commands, as the name would suggest, a central position. The building was built in 1869, at the time of slavery and therefore holds many secrets. It is a world of tradition, diversity and beauty, linked to the memory and the imagination of the city. Over 100 thousand people circulate daily through the 107 stalls and shops distributed over two floors of the Public Market. In this symbol of historic and cultural heritage of Porto Alegre, you can find typical products, utensils, exotic fruit, meat, spices, Afro-Brazilian religious items, crafts, bakeries, wine shops and sugar cane rum shops (cachaçaria), which is a selection of the best of our national products. Horse riding in the middle of nowhere in Mato Grosso and the Cuiabá Arena, which will host World Cup games in 2014

>> Located in the central region of the country, the city of Cuiabá will next year be a in the spot light as it is one of the 12 host cities of the FIFA World Cup. It will be undoubtedly be a unique opportunity not only to cheer on your your country, but also for unravelling the secrets and charms of this Brazilian ecotourism hub. Known as the “Green City” because of its plentiful number of trees along its streets, Cuiabá is the main industrial, commercial and service centre in the State of Mato Grosso. It is also the agricultural heart for the country and Cuiabá is also the gateway to many beautiful tourist regions. What remains a secret to many is that within a radius of 140 km of the city there are major destinations of ecotourism such as the Pantanal and Chapada dos Guimarães. A visit to this area must take in the Casa do Artesão (Artisan’s House) as it brings together craft from across the state into seven themed rooms. One of the rooms has exhibits about the indian village Alto Xingu. When hunger calls and it is time to taste the typical Pantanal dishes, remember that the highlight of the region are the all you can eat (rodízio) seafood restaurants. The side dishes are also delicious: pirão (fish broth and cassava flour), farofa de banana (toasted

World Cup host city and a gateway to the Pantanal manioc flour with banana), salad and rice. For dessert, try furundu, a traditional sweet from Cuiabá made with green papaya, brown sugar (rapadura) and cinnamon.

Ecotourism >> For those visiting Cuiabá, the highlight is definitely a visit to the Pantanal. Of course, the main attraction here is nature. An interesting feature of the region, which is symbolized by the Jabiru bird, is the diversity of its species. So far, the numbers of species catalogued are: 263 fishes, 41 amphibians, 113 reptiles, 463 birds and 132 mammals. 70 km away is Chapada dos

Guimarães and it is another place definitely worth visiting. It is unfortunately currently closed to the public, but it promises to reopen before the end of this year. The highlight of these big rock walls is the Cachoeira do Véu da Noiva (Bride’s Veil Waterfall), which is a breath taking 86 metre drop.

Sport fishing >> For fishing fans, Cuiabá has many excellent options including Mato Grosso, which welcomes numerous tourists and professionals from around the world, mainly due to the large number of lowland rivers in the Amazon, Paraguay and Araguaia Basins.

The capital of Mato Grosso has been investing in improving its infrastructure and services with an eye on the huge influx of football lovers that are expected in the city. Cuiabá and Várzea Grande, a city located 15 minutes from the capital, together have 95 hotels that will play host to tourists during the World Cup 2014. There is still a project to build 13 new hotels and currently, hotel occupancy is driven by business tourism. In Cuiabá and

Várzea Grande, business people make up 85% of the occupancy. Certainly during the World Cup this trend will reverse and the volume of leisure tourists will be higher. The Marechal Rondon International Airport operates major airlines that offer regular flights to major cities in the country. The government has plans to invest R$ 91 million in the capital’s airport and will also accelerate the pace of the Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) construction in Cuiabá, which at 22.2 km long and will connect the city centre to Marechal Rondon International Airport and to the neighbourhood of Coxipó. FIFA have levied many quality

requirements for the construction and renovation of the stadiums that will host the World Cup in 2014. There is a new stadium called Arena Pantanal and it has received investment and the constructors are working around the clock to have it completed in time for the games. Arena Pantanal is a project that was won by GCP Architects. The capacity will be 43,600, with boxes and a retractable roof. It has the possibility to be reduced by up to 30% after the World Cup as the project must meet LEED certification of sustainability. The estimated cost of the investment will reach US$ 230 million.

HOST CITIES ( PERNAMBUCO )

Diversity and festivities >> Diversity. This is the best word to categorise the main tourist attractions in Recife, the state capital of Pernambuco. Recife features many places that combine a unique blend of history, culture, cuisine and natural beauty that give people visiting for the first time a balanced experience. The state capital’s roads traverse many bridges, due to the rivers that litter the city and these have created a number of small islands that surround it, such as the Islands of Santo Antônio (St. Anthony), São José (St. Joseph) and Bairro de Recife. There are also churches decades or centuries old that endorse the elegance of its buildings. In addition to the charms of its classical architecture, Recife attracts tourists due to its culture. The frevo dance helps distinguish the region from others as this dance has local traditions and during an event in Paris in 2012, it was given the status of an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The musical beat of Fervo is well known for its choreography and it is a major attraction each year at the Recife Carnival, which is thought of as one of the best in Brazil. This year, the festival brought over 700,000 people on to the streets of Recife, 100 groups of performing frevo and more than 1500 street performances. There are many important monuments along its streets and there are a range of attractions for tourists such as the Oficina Francisco Brennand, where sculptures inspired by mythological and literary figures are on show, the Golden Chapel, which is a church with its ceilings and walls covered with religious paintings, and even Old Recife, accumulating characteristics of the Dutch invasion in the 17th century, with colourful facades of old houses.

The Old Recife neighbourhood, in the historic centre of the capital of Pernambuco, will be closed for 32 days during the 2014 World Cup. It will host the Fan Fests, which are outdoor parties that cater for the fans on game day by showing the matches on big screens. To help entertain the tourists and also the locals, new projects are also being implemented, such as 35 km of Ciclofaixas (bike lanes). >> The main concerns of the government to get Recife ready for hosting part of the World Cup in 2014 are concentrated in two areas. First, presenting a high level stadium that reaches the quality standard required by the event organizer FIFA with the obvious intention of welcoming the teams that are part of the competition. The second priority is the urban mobility to enable the movement of supporters into and out of the state, and from other corners of the world. In both, the success of the government projects can enhance the promotion of the city and add value to help attract future visitors, thus giving the city a great legacy from this mega event. Infraero has started the expansion of the Gilberto Freyre airport which will revitalize the current terminal and runway system. The work will be postponed during the high season as to not affect the arrival and departure of tourists. This improvement alone will cost R$8 million, plus an allocation of R$ 18.5 million to rebuild the control tower, but this is still in the bidding process. The new tower will be 31 metres tall and the project will integrate the operating, technical and administrative sectors of the airport. The mobility of fans in and around Recife will be helped by free transportation to the Arena Pernambuco and it was tested successfully during the Confederations Cup. Florianópolis The 3rd gay tourist destination in the country >> The island of Santa Catarina is one of the most popular holiday spots for gay people. According to studies by the Brazilian Tourism Institute (Embratur), Florianópolis is the third most visited city in Brazil - behind only São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In 2012, it was the host of the 29th Global Convention of the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA), the largest event LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual and Transgender) in the world. By hosting the event, the city has established itself as a gay-friendly destination. Floripa even has a specific law against homophobia. Law No. 7961/2009, passed

on 4th September 2009 supports the diversity of sexual orientation and gender identity in Florianópolis, and is considered one of the most complete and advanced in the country. This type of initiative not only ensures the safety of everyone, but it has been very positive in attracting tourists. Having its door open for gay tourists carries both a humanitarian image and generates gains for the economy. According to the IGLTA, the sector turns over around R$ 275 billion per year worldwide. Tourist in this segment spends on average 30% more than other tourists and travel on average 29 days per year.

The Florianópolis Department of Tourism understands the importance of this segment to the economy and spares no effort to qualify their services and further promote the destination within this sector. LGBT Tourism is among the major priorities of this government. The city has many options that attract gay audiences. Besides the beaches, Carnival and New Year’s Eve Parties, which are often frequented by LGBT, Floripa offers bars, restaurants and nightclubs that focus on this segment. In addition, the city also hosts a gay pride parade, which attracts many tourists from all over the world.

One eye on Religious Tourism Religious Tourism is also an important stalwart for the city of Belém (Bethlehem). Erected in 1852, the Basilica of Our Lady of Nazareth is the only one in the Brazilian Amazon. Its history is a symbol and its religious importance exerts a profound influence on to the religious imagery of Pará, leading to thousands of pilgrims to visit here every year. Featuring a neo-classical style, the church is one of the most beautiful in Belém and here the most special Brazilian Catholic processions take place: the Círio de Nazaré draws thousands of faithful people and it happens on every second Sunday in October. Any Catholic who arrives in Belém has a mandatory visit to the Basilica. Currently, the church is the major historical heritage of the city. Next to it is the Emilio Goeldi Museum, a museum only by name. The site is a large wooded field with a zoo with the main species of Amazonian fauna.

especially in restaurants that sell homemade beer. You can also find shops of various kinds, selling various traditional touristic products. The Dock Station is located next to Ver-o-Peso Market, a traditional place and also the best place in town to get to know genuine Brazilian cuisine. Herbs, roots, fruits and Amazonian fish are spread along the stalls that are open to the public from early and until late afternoon. The complex also includes a fish market with several Amazonian species, and an indigenous museum telling the stories of the major tribes who still live in Pará. Colourful costumes, loud instruments and expressive dancing, keep the folk heritage of Pará alive and well. The music echoes through the four corners of the state. From the north to the south the rhythms have transformed into new colours and movements according to the history of each region. The traditional dances are spontaneous and are dependant on the desire to have fun and to keep alive the rhythm and culture. The songs, dances, legends and myths of Pará give tourists the perfect idea of the magic that the Amazon holds and the vibrant force of man’s local cultural roots.

NATURE / ECOTURISM / ADVENTURE TOURISM ( MATO GROSSO DO SUL )

Daniel De Graville

Mato Grosso do Sul The distinctiveness of a Pantanal safari >> The many idiosyncrasies of Mato Grosso do Sul make the state capital, Campo Grande, very interesting as it forms part of the Pantanal, which is an Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism paradise. When the waters recede in the dry season, horseback safaris, hiking long trails ands four-wheel drive safari come into their own as they make it much easier to see the wildlife. It is then possible to see alligators, otters, pampas deer, maned wolf, marsh deer, armadillos and capybaras in the returning rivers and many different sized lakes. Bird watching is another popular activity

that people enjoy. Here it is possible to see such birds as the Jabiru (the symbol of the Pantanal), which can grow up to 1.60 metres, the almost metre high spoonbill, toucans, jabiru storks, herons, parrots, macaws, rheas, several species of hawks and hyacinth macaws, among many others. It is recommended that tourist always have a local guide, who will be able to tell them some good regional stories and will also be able to identify the different species, habitats and various animal behaviours. It is possible to get close to birds and mammals, such as monkeys and capybaras, in the

areas surrounding the hotels. But it is on the organised tours that you will be able to see the different species of flora and fauna. Among the attractions offered, there are horseback rides, daytime and night time photo safaris, kayaking, boat rides and even piranha fishing. When choosing a hotel, the ones in the middle of the Pantanal are preferable. Tourists should be well prepared with their cameras and camcorders, caps or hats, walking shoes and light clothing. For these trips, it is ideal to wear trousers and long shirts to avoid the intense sun and insect bites which are common in this environment.

An overview of Brazilian hotels Investments will follow the big city thinking for state capitals with differing possibilities

reveals that operators are the main channel and are responsible for selling 51.8% of resort rooms. Following next are telephone reservation hotlines (16.1%), sales staff (13.9 %), the hotel websites (6.7%), online travel agencies (OTA’s) (6 %) and others (5.6%). Another interesting fact about the source of income is the type of business. The accommodation itself accounts for nearly 70% of revenue, followed by food and beverages (21.4%) and events (5%). “With the World Cup, there is a window opportunity to attract foreign tourists, which was once responsible for 40% of the occupation of the resorts. We strive to ensure that tourism is recognized as an export commodity and that we have the support needed to bring new currency to the country”, says the president of Brazilian Resorts, Dilson Jatahy Fonseca Jr.

Foreign visitors are increasingly looking for alternative types of accommodation within the country. Hostels, campsites and rented houses made up 17% of the tourists who came to the country last year. The number represents almost a fifth of the accommodation used by foreigners in the country, which is a significant market share. Hotels are still the main type of accommodation for international tourists commanding a 50.6% share. “The numbers show that the lodging sector in Brazil has a variety of products able to please everyone”, says the president of Embratur, Flávio Dino. The data is from the International Tourist Demand survey conducted by FGV and commissioned by the Ministry of Tourism/Embratur.

The occupancy rate in Brazilian resorts has steadily grown in recent years, although the number of available apartments remains virtually the same. The figures also remain relatively stable, rising according to inflation. These are some of the main conclusions of the survey of Resorts in Brazil 2013 by BSH International and Brazilian Association of Resorts (Resorts Brazil). The survey examined the performance of the resorts market between 2010 and 2012 and covered 26,820 rooms. The study points to an estimated increase of 1,780 rooms before 2015. Between 2011 and 2012, occupancy increased by 9.3%; over the same period, the daily rate rose by 7.5%, reaching R$ 501.82. Overall, between the beach and mountain resorts, Brazilian tourists are responsible for 89% of all occupancy. With regard to distribution channels, the survey

In early 2013, the Forum of Hotel Operators of Brazil (FOHB), in partnership with Hotel Invest Consulting and with the National Service of Commercial Apprenticeship (SENAC-SP), released the Hospitality Industry Scoreboard 2015. Research indicates an increase of rooms across the whole country, with the growth of the hotel industry and the arrival of international flagship hotels in Brazil. According to Roberto Rotter, from FOHB, the corporate sector is responsible for 60% of sales in the hotel industry in this country, but he also adds that the sector is exposed to changes in economic behaviour. Mapie is a company that specialises in hotel consulting and the director, Carolina Haro, says that investments, both in big cities and in the countryside, will grow aggressively in the periods leading up to the big events. “Today there is a regionalisation of investments by investors and a bigger demand for hotel management”, she said.

Brazil is improving its infrastructure >> The Ministry of Tourism has funded a series of projects all over the country, which covers all of the Brazilian states, with the total investment set at approximately R$ 620 million. “Infrastructure building work is one of the mainstays of the tourism development policy in Brazil. The projects have generated jobs and have helped tackle regional inequalities”, said the Minister Gastão Vieira. The minister noted that there are 20 airports being renovated that are managed by Infraero, with 13 of these in World Cup host cities. Before the World Cup, their capacities will be increased by 40%. “It would be no exaggeration to say that the country is “renovated”, but it will be improved in several basic and fundamental aspects”, he said. “It is also being expanded, and very quickly, the airports in Brasília, Guarulhos and Campinas, should all be ready by April next year”, he added. Vieira said that there are still a number of urban mobility projects for all the host cities, as well as improvements to tourist

The Internet was the source of 1.87 million foreign tourists Word of mouth has always been the main source of spreadinginformation to attract foreign tourists to Brazil. In 2010, however, this situation changed: the Internet has become the primary means oflearning about tourism in the country. Last year, 1.87 million people usedthe Internet to do their research. The data is from a study by theInternational Tourist Demand 2012, conducted by the Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with the Institute of Economic Research (FIPE). In second place, word of mouth by friends and relatives accounted for 1.45 million. Thirdly, business travel was responsible for 903,000 foreigners. The Internet is different from travel guides and conventional means of promoting tourism because it exposes evaluations of previous visitors who used hotels, hostels and visited the sights. One of the major travel websites in the world is Trip Advisor and it has amassedover 100 million reviews by virtual visitors.

Brazil’s foreign air travel grows by 5% signs and accessibility. “Roads are also being improved throughout the country and several will be funded by the private sector within the Investment Program of Logistics”, said Vieira. He believes that the World Cup has helped to accelerate the infrastructure work that needed to be done. The program of investment in tourism infrastructure aims to identify local needs, based on the analysis of supply and demand, creating conditions for the expansion of economic activities directly or indirectly linked to tourism. According to the Ministry of Tourism, among the 14,500 projects in the last 10 years, there are event and convention centres, tourist service centres (CATs), tourist information centres (PITs), bus terminals, tourist accessibility signs, airports, revitalization of historic heritage and urban redevelopment projects. According to Gastão Vieira, besides the infrastructure, it is also necessary to improve the professional qualifications of the population. For this, the Ministry launched the program Pronatec Cup. “In hotels, this is being undertaken by the private sector, with the help of federal credit, as ProCopa, from BNDES. And we are confident that will be expanded”, he added.

Brazil’s foreign air travel increased by 5.42% in the month of September, which has helped expandthe possibilities for foreign touriststo come toour country. The survey was carried out by Embratur (Brazilian Tourism Institute). The number of flights to Latin America rose by 6.1% - with 609 weekly flights. The biggest winner was Uruguay, with an increase of 85.71% in the number of flights. This isdue to new flightsbyBrazilian companies and the new Uruguayan company Buquebus Air. But it was the Asian continent that stood out with the largest increase in flights to Brazil. The figures show an increase of 40% (from 25 to 35 weekly flights), which are the direct result of new flights fromUnited Arab Emirates and Turkey. The connectionto Africa keeps continuing on an upward trend. In September, there was an increase of 22.22% of flights, mainly to South Africa and the beginning of the Ethiopian Air flight linking Rio de Janeiro to the capital of Togo, Lomé. In Europe, the Netherlandsincreased its flights by 20%to Brazil, with the cities of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo accommodating these. Flights to England increased by 4.35% and to the United States grew by 10.43%.

Brazil sees the English tourist market as one of Europe’s largest >> According to Marco Lomanto, director of Products and Destinations at Embratur, England is the sixth largest European tourist resource for tourism in Brazil, but more importantly, it has a very large growth potential. In 2012, 155 thousand English people visited the country with 42.9% saying that the weather and the beaches were the main reason for traveling, followed by Culture (28.8%), Nature & Ecotourism (23.8%) and Business (20%). “The English market is very traditional for Brazilian tourism and the British people really crave to visit our country. Furthermore, they spend a lot and business tourism has a strong appeal”, he said. According to Lomanto, the relationship between the countries is good and will be fortified with the reopening of the Brazilian Tourism Office (EBT) in England: “In addition, the embassy always has material for distribution and has the support of Embratur in several projects”. Among the primary promotions by Brazil in England, the director named the Goal to Brazil and the Taste of London advertising promotions, which is a a partnership between the Brazilian Embassy in London and The Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex). The

first event is focused on the World Cup and the second on the Brazilian regional cuisine. Embratur promoted the Brazilian Film Festival for the English market, which was held between September 27 and October 1. “The event was attended by 110 tourism professionals and they were able to learn about the Brazilian culture through the Seventh Art”, he said. During this WTM in London, at the end of each day there will be cocktails with caipirinhas and various cultural attractions from all the states present at the fair. “Each

day a different destination will be represented”, said Marco Lomanto. In addition, the film 360º do Brasil and digital tools to promote the country will also be presented. With the World Cup approaching, Embratur takes the opportunity to publicise the event in the presence of the World Cup mascot, Fuleco - who will be present at the Brazilian stand at WTM. “Big LED screens will also be erected on site with images of the destinations and festivals in the North and Northeast, which will be the subject of the Fan Fests during the World Cup in Brazil”, he imagines. “This is a new product that we are offering to the market abroad”, he added. Still at WTM, Embratur will promote a Brazilian festival. “The focus of the event for the tourism trade will be Brazil as a business destination; we will also focus on gastronomy and wine tours in the country”, he said. Another event that we will promote at the fair is the Sustainable Ecotourism Congress (ESCP), an event captured by Embratur in partnership with the Tourism Foundation of Mato Grosso do Sul and the Bonito CVB. “This is considered as one of the main events of the ecotourism segment in the world. The last edition was held in Kenya and, in April 2014, will be held in Bonito”.

Embratur: mega events are the correct choice >> The 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Brazil and will undoubtedly help tourism in the country. A survey shows that 70% of foreigners who went to Confederations Cup games intend to return for the World Cup. According to the president of Embratur, Flávio Dino, these results prove that the mega events were the correct choice in promoting the country. “Two out of three tourists who came to the Confederations Cup had never been to Brazil and the survey shows that there is a high index of intent to return”, he said. “This shows that the mega events are giving loyalty to a new audience, ensuring that the level of growth of tourism in Brazil will be sustainable for decades to come, which I think is the main challenge for everyone who works in the industry”, he added. However, Flávio Dino recognizes that to ensure that the flow of visitors is continuous, it is necessary to do our homework, especially

“The EBTs will fit the business strategy, providing information for operators, aiming to expand and diversify foreign visits to Brazil via tourism”, he explained.

with regard to competitiveness. “To be sustainable we need to offer good services at affordable prices”, he outlined. Embratur announced the reopening of Brazilian Tourism Offices (EBTs) around the world, and one of which will be in London.

>> The number of British tourists visiting Brazil has been growing. In 2011, there were 149,564 and in 2012 were 155,548. With this result, the UK is naturally on the list of priority market for promotional projects by Embratur. “Most British tour operators offer at least one destination in Brazil, which shows the interest of the British market in the country and the potential possibilities of sales of Brazilian destinations”, said the president of Embratur. In addition to participating in the World Travel Market (WTM), Embratur is developing other projects aimed at the British market, such as presentations, workshops, road shows and press trips. In London, despite the disappointment of the number of tourists, the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, said the Olympics generated 13 billion pounds (R$ 40.3 billion). The largest positive effect on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) being infrastructure – due to the construction of new stadiums and train lines - thanks to the Games budget of 9.3 billion pounds (11.8 billion euros or 14.6 billion dollars). In Brazil, a study by Fundação Instituto de Administração (FIA) commissioned by the Ministry of Sports (Study of potential socioeconomic impacts of the Olympic Games in the city of Rio de Janeiro in 2016) shows the estimated arrival of 380,000 foreign visitors to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympics, who will spend

on accommodation, food, shopping and various services, around US$152 million. It is expected to make a considerable impact on the city’s image and on its attractiveness as a hub for business and leisure Tourism. According to the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA), the economic impacts produced by the R$ 30 billion investment during the sporting calendar apex of the next decade will quadruple by 2027, generating more than R$ 100 billion of wealth for the country. The three industries with the greatest potential for receiving investment as a result of the sporting events are construction, aviation and tourism. Such activities directly related to mega-events, already have significant investment from the private sector and should now receive more from federal and local governments.

>> Diving is one of the most popular activities for tourists traveling to Brazil for adventure seekers. Popular destinations are Fernando de Noronha, Paraty, Ilhabela, Bombinhas and Recife. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Adventure is the second main reason for leisure trips made by foreigners to the country (21.3 % indicated this preference) but first was Sun and Beaches (64.2 %). “Diving Tourism is an activity that helps consolidate the industry, but it has the potential to become one of the main reasons of tourism when related to nature”, said the National Secretary of Tourism Policies, Vinicius Lummertz. The average age of adventure travellers is 34 and the average length of adventure travel is 7.5 days, according to data from the Adventure Research Roundup / Adventure Travel Trade Association. Nature has risen in importance not only in Brazil but also in other countries. According to the Global Competitiveness Report of

the World Economic Forum, Brazil ranks first in the world for natural resources. It is possible to dive in lagoons, such as the Anhumas Abyss and Formoso River, in Mato Grosso do Sul. In all cases it is necessary to take a course and be accompanied by professionals. If you intend diving alone then there are courses that need to be taken first consisting of lectures and practical exercises in swimming pools or in the open sea. There are diving schools around the country but it is best to look for certification from internationally recognized organisations, such as PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors, which is the largest body that provides diving certification in the world) or the PDIC (Professional Diving Instructors Corporation).

Brazilian cuisine is considered very good by 89% of Brazilian tourists and 97 % of foreigners, according to a study by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism

>> Cuisine has become increasingly present in Brazilian tourism and the number of visitors who go to one of over two hundred food festivals that occur every year in the country is increasing. Food is among one of the main Brazilian tourists expenses, behind only transport, according to the latest Survey by the Domestic Ministry of Tourism (2012). Brazilian cuisine is the result of a great mix of traditions, ingredients and food from both the native indigenous population and immigrants. Each region of the country has its own gastronomic style, which has been adapted by 52 | FOLHA DO TURISMO BRASIL | WTM

the climate and geography. Due to differences in climate, topography, soil and vegetation, it is difficult to establish a typical Brazilian dish. Although rice and beans are found everywhere, its preparation varies by region. Cities such as Tiradentes, in Minas Gerais, Joinville, in Santa Catarina, and Brotas, in São Paulo, for example, hold food festivals. None of them have a culinary tradition, but the added gastronomy has reinforced its attractions for tourist. Tiradentes is one of the main historical cities in the country; Brotas, an important destination for adventure sports and Joinville is a city of

German colonial architecture, with one of the best Human Development Indices (HDI). The variety of flavours and new chefs further increase the appeal of some of these Brazilian destinations. “Gastronomy is one of the foundations of the structure of tourism for leisure and for business”, explains the director of the Department of Studies and Research of the Ministry of Tourism, Francisco José Lopes who is responsible for the research. “Other good news is that the gastronomic vocation of most cities is now beginning to be incorporated into destinations. Much still remains unknown”.

Summer is coming... and Florianópolis is ready and waiting >> The capital of Santa Catarina is one of the most important tourist destinations in Brazil. The city is situated on an island (Santa Catarina Island) and over a small part of a mainland peninsula. Here you will find a hundred beaches, mountains, preservation areas, Atlantic Forest, dunes and two large lagoons. Peri is the largest fresh water reservoir on the island and has shallow and clear waters, whilst Conceição has calm, greenish, transparent and shallow waters. Florianópolis has 100 beaches of all kinds, from sheltered coves to those facing the open sea with big waves, which are obviously good for surfing. Some are famous and very popular, like Jurerê Internacional, Jurerê, Canasvieiras, Ponta das Canas, Lagoinha, Brava, Ingleses and Santinho (North of the island); Moçambique, Barra da Lagoa, Mole and Joaquina (East); Campeche, Armação and Pântano do Sul (South). Beaches and waterfalls help you enjoy the summer in the best possible way >> Leaving Floripa and heading towards the Serra Verde e Mar (Green Mountains and Sea), you will find more natural beauty. The coast of Santa Catarina is one of the most beautiful in Brazil and there are dozens of beaches with white sand and clear blue water. Verdant hills, bustling resorts and bucolic crevices surround many of them. There are vast differences as some are almost wild, some have sheltered coves and others are open sea beaches. The smallest city of Santa Catarina is located on a peninsula with an abundance of bays, coves and beaches. In Bombinhas, the transparent waters and marine biodiversity attract scuba divers, who will find ideal conditions for snorkelling and well-equipped scuba diving agencies. Graced with beautiful beaches, Bombinhas offers good conditions for surfing, sailing and water skiing. 75% of its expanse consists of protected areas and exuberant nature. tourists through the richness of the Atlantic Forest, past waterfalls and it is possible to see several species of animals and plants. On the other hand, Balneário Camboriú is a modern and cosmopolitan city and it has attractions that guarantee fun 24 hours a day and even in low season. During the high season, approximately 1.5 million tourists visit the city - of which at least 100,000 come from abroad. In December and January, both during the day and at night, life pulsates along Atlantic Avenue that stretches around the Central Beach and plays host to many busy bars, nightclubs, hotels, cafeterias and restaurants that specialise in seafood and international cuisine. There are cities like Bom Jardim da Serra, Urubici, Urupema, São Joaquim and Lages that make up part of a route that has some of the most beautiful panoramic views in southern Brazil. Along the route are various forms of accommodation. You can stay in farm hotels

or cosy cottages and tourists that arrive in Serra Catarinense (Santa Catarina Mountains Region) can combine the pleasures of rusticity with the delights of an abundant and rich gastronomy. The quiet city of São Joaquim is one of the highlights of the region. In late September, the beautiful blossom of the apple and cherry trees fill the air with their sweet scent. Lages and Urubici are two other cities that are worth visiting. The first is considered the national capital of

Rural Tourism, where visitors can do activities related to farm life, such as fishing, horse riding, milking cows and enjoying a nice barbecue. Urubici also houses numerous waterfalls, rivers, springs, caves, trails, hills and mountains. A good tip is to go to Morro da Igreja (Church Hill), which is the highest point in the state which stands at 1828 metres. The hill also has a huge rock with a 30 metre wide hole in the middle that is known as Pedra Furada (Holed Stone).

In Aparados da Serra, you will find some breath taking landscapes. The region is located between the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul and has the largest number of water springs and the largest area of preserved Atlantic Forest in Brazil. There are cliffs here that look like they were carved out of the rock and stretch up to more than 1,200 metres and at the base, there is a crystal clear river, some natural pools, rapids and waterfalls. Swim in special waters >> In Santa Catarina there are at least 14 hydrothermal resorts as the water is said to have healing and relaxation properties with temperatures ranging between 33º C and 40º C. These resorts are found in five regions of the state and attract, during the high season, a large number of tourists. The cities have excellent tourist infrastructure with hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and shops. Thermal water is more than a type of treatment; it can be pleasurable for the whole family as the high temperature allows children

to stay longer in the water. There are also other tourist attractions in these cities and they range from the beautiful landscapes to the many adventure sport options. TheprestigeofthetownofÁguasMornas(Warm Waters), for example, has warmed the enthusiasm of thousands of people who have come to discover this hot spring paradise, which incredibly, spring up from the ground at a temperature of 39° C. Joined together with human warmth, the history of German immigration and the cozy atmosphere, the town welcomes all comers.

In Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, the hidromineral park of Caldas da Imperatriz was the first to be discovered in Brazil back in 1813. The city’s name is due to the visit of the imperial couple, Dom Pedro II and Empress Teresa Cristina, in 1845. The city has many hotels with a total capacity of 740 beds. Gravatal, Tubarão, Santa Rosa de Lima, Itá, Treze Tílias, Piratuba, Videira, Águas de Chapecó, São Carlos, Palmitos, Quilombo and São João do Oeste complete a tourist route full of discoveries. Country Life: beautiful landscapes and nature Santa Catarina is the perfect destination for those who enjoy the country life. Rural Tourism in Brazil started here in the state and there are a variety of attractions and tours in all the regions. There are more than 60 lodges and farm hotels, spread over some 30 regions, mostly situated in idyllic locations, with diverse sceneries such as beaches, fields, snow, sea and mountains, which offer tourists the very best in lodgings, relaxation, leisure and fun. The activities in the farm hotels vary by region. Some sites have water parks, hydrothermal resorts, retreats, extreme sports and traditional parties with Italian, German and Polish dances. In all of them, there is always space at the tables which enable you to enjoy barbecues to colonial breakfasts. The different seasons of the year also provide changing sceneries. In the summer, you can see the grape and apple harvest. In winter, enjoy the spectacle of snow covering trees, the ground and roof tops with a carpet of white powder, which is something very rare in Brazil.

Go riding! Cycle Tourism attracts visitors to many areas of the State >> Various groups around the world are coming together more and more to visit and explore diverse destinations and to exercise at the same time, through Cycle Tourism. In this case, the bike is not only used as a means of transport but as a travel companion. Santa Catarina was the first Brazilian state to create tours to be enjoyed on short trips by bicycle. The cyclists remain in close contact with nature and local cultures with the help of guides and specialist companies. Cycle tourists take their time to amble along as they seek to understand more about the places where they are going by making the most of culture, cuisine, nature and especially contact with other Virtually ppeople. pe opple le. These roads provide access to architectural elements such as houses, huts, mills, churches and monuments, many of which are identified with the local culture and colonization. During the many possible journeys, the cycle tourist will come across traditional festivals, local folklore, customs, the language, the cuisine and the different beliefs. These cities have over the years helped preserve many characteristics of German and Italian colonization. Nowadays, there are organized tours in the Greater Florianópolis area, the Costa Verde & Mar, Serra Catarinense and Caminho dos Cânions. Santa Catarina - sport and adventure >> Sport cannot be left out of the list of attractions in Santa Catarina. Many hills and woods surround the capital Florianópolis whilst Lagoa da Conceição is a benchmark for sports for both men and women. As well as water activities such as windsurfing and stand up paddling, there are also trails around the area. One of the most famous is the Canto dos Araçás which passes through the middle of the Atlantic Forest and leads up to the small community of Canto da Ilha, which was declared a Cultural Preservation Area for preserving the Azorean fisherman and lace making culture. It is possible to take a boat here but the four hours it takes to walk here add the word “adventure” to the tour, which is after all why people are here! A shorter trail is Gurita, which passes through the Parque Municipal da Lagoa do Peri, There you will see some historic houses from the 19th century. The trail

leads to a waterfall with natural pools. The park offers guides by appointment only and the walk lasts about an hour. Also by Peri Lagoon you can trek to Ribeirão da Ilha, which is a more difficult walk, due to the two hours it takes walking next to large holes. In the small community in the south of the island, you can see a traditional mill, fruit from the Azorean colonization, and sample the famous oysters of Florianópolis. Not only is the land and water good for sports, but the city’s air is good too, as paragliding is very popular here. You can fly from Lagoa Hills, Mole Hills or Santo Amaro da Imperatriz Hills, in Florianópolis. The tours do depend on good weather though. The flights, which are tandem with a guide, take place over the beautiful landscapes of beaches of Mole, Joaquina and Galheta, Lagoa da Conceição or a valley shrouded in mountains and waterfalls.

Gastronomic Route follows the story of Brazil’s colonisation The ethnic mix that occurred in the South has resulted in culinary mix that is completely different to the rest of the country. Being next to the sea, the cuisine is generally based on seafood. In Caminho dos Príncipes and Vale Europeu, which have German influences, the delicacies are pork and they are cooked with spicy seasonings that create strong flavours. It is obviously washed down with beer. The German influence is present in dishes such as

sauerkraut with vina, kassler (pork chop), eisben (pork knuckle) and bockwurst (sausage). The mit rotkohl (duck with red cabbage) is already an adaptation with native ingredients from Brazilian agriculture. The German bakeries here are definitely worth visiting as they have an array of sweet and savoury delights and one of the most famous is the Appfelstrudel, (apple strudel), but apple coffee cake (cucas) and the various pies are also popular. There are many other colonial

foods and the best of the rest are probably the jams and the homemade sausages. The Italians have the largest immigrant population and they have spread out right across the state. Their typical warm cafeterias are present in all regions with pasta dishes, polenta and chicken. It is worth embarking down a colonial path that will lead to traditional communities in the rural interior, where the etiquettes of these forerunners are still part of everyday life and thus flavours are more authentic.
