Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon Feia Lagoon One of the most famous views of Rio de Janeiro is Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. From the top of Corcovado Mountain, there are privileged views of this lagoon surrounded by urban buildings. It is possible to enjoy a walk or a cycle ride around the lagoon, which stretches for 7 kms. It is a great place to enjoy the sunny mornings where you will find relaxed leisure activities. There are many tennis, football, basketball and even baseball courts and there are paddleboats available for hire, which share the water harmoniously with rowers, sailors and water-skiers.

Around the 204 thousand square metre lagoon, is the largest outdoor gastronomic centre in Latin America and another one of the recreational areas of the city.

Feia (Ugly) Lagoon is among the largest freshwater lagoons in Brazil and is on the border of the cities of Campos dos Goytacazes and Quissamã in the northern region of the state. Feia Lagoon is approximately 170 km² and is quite popular for artisanal fishing. In the last hundred years, its surface has reduced to one third of its original size. Contrary to what its name signifies, it is a very beautiful and majestic lake. The origin of the misnomer is due to it being discovered on a stormy day.

Jurubatiba Located in the Jurubatiba National Park, in the midst of northern Rio de Janeiro, is Jurubatiba. Here there are several species of flora and fauna, especially orchids and bromeliads. The lagoon has important diversity, as there are remains of the northeastern hinterlands and the Amazon rainforest, also trees typical of the most arid of regions. Alligators, capybaras, armadillos, otters, anteaters, also a considerable number of birds and fish that live in the park next to the lake still remain unstudied.

Araruama Located in the region known as Sun Coast, Araruama Lagoon stands out mainly for the water sports and beauty of its shimmering surface. Depending on the winds, the lake is considered ideal for kitesurfing, windsurfing, hobie cats, jet skiing and sailing. There, are many sailing competitions that take place here too.

Guanabara Bay Guanabara Bay is the backdrop to most pictures that represent Brazil abroad. Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf and the mountains that frame them are the bestknown Brazilian images worldwide with hundreds of islands, cliffs, islands, coves and ridges form its landscape. Among the main ones are: Paquetá, Ilha do Governador, Niterói and Magé. Some islands are part of the city’s history, such as the Fiscal Island, that became famous for having housed the famous Baile da Ilha Fiscal, the last big party of the Empire before the proclamation of the Republic in November 1889.

Others, such as Cobras Island, were strategic points of defence against foreign pirate invaders who arrived in Brazil in search of riches.

The estuarine dolphin, a species of dolphin, can be seen throughout the year in the region of Itacuruçá Beach and Cardoso Island.

Angra dos Reis The largest island in the Angra dos Reis Bay is a paradise for adventurers and those who just want to enjoy beautiful beaches. Ilha Grande (Big Island) has many beauties and stories to enrich everyone´s trip. One third of its territory was transformed into a State Park in 1971 to preserve the Atlantic Forest. Its 192km² are home to 106 beaches, waterfalls, rivers, lakes, mountains and peaks. On the side facing the open ocean are deserted beaches within a paradisiacal setting. On this side is the Biological Reserve of South Beach, with fully preserved Atlantic Forest.

he State of Rio de Janeiro is toasted by a unique set of factors, which combines everything a tourist could want in a destination. The exuberant nature appears in two distinct regions: the highlands and the lowlands. Moving away from the coast on parallel tracks, they extend into the countryside and have created two very different delightful destinations. Add to this a the unique culture, the big events such as the Carnival and New Year’s Eve Party, and the local people who are renowned for their friendliness and charisma, and are always ready to welcome you. The capital amalgamates characteristics from many places as people from all over the country and the world have chosen to live privileged setting, which now has 16 million inhabitants. If a person was born in the City of Rio de Janeiro they are known as ‘cariocas’, and if the person was born in the State of Rio de Janeiro, then they are known as “fluminense”.

As a gateway to Brazil, Rio is blessed by the statue of Christ the Redeemer, one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, which, from the top of Corcovado Mountain, opens his arms over the beautiful Guanabara Bay. This magnificent sight continues to inspire singers, poets and painters.

ParKs Itatiaia National Park Located in the Itatiaia Massif at Serra da Mantiqueira, between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, the Itatiaia National Park is the oldest in Brazil and was created on June 4, 1937. With a tupi origin, its name means “Spiked cliff or pointed stone”. Inside the park is one of the highest peaks in the country, standing 2800 metres high. Hiking, climbing and even scuba diving are some of the activities available for the adventurous.

The site has eight waterfalls and 15 trails that are visited by more than 80,000 people a year. In the lower part of the park, the Blue Lake is a good choice for diving, but it takes a little courage, because the average water temperature is only 12 degrees.

Serra da Bocaina National Park Between the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the Serra da Bocaina National Park comprises of an approximate area of 134,000 hectares and is of significant biodiversity. It is estimated that 60% of the vegetation is from the Atlantic Forest, and the remainder is regenerated forest. Among the species of flora you can find many

kinds of trees and plants, but the most common and easy to spot are pines, cedars, trumpet trees, palm trees and bromeliads. Bird watchers in the park will have a field day as the wild animals aren´t shy. A good tip is to venture onto the Gold Trail, a 3-day walk that passes through historic places, linking São José do Barreiro to Paraty.

Tijuca National Park A fragment of the Atlantic Forest biome and an integral part of the Biosphere Reserve in Rio de Janeiro, the Tijuca National Park is currently the most visited national park in Brazil, receiving over two million visitors per year. Divided into four sectors (Tijuca Forest, Serra da Carioca, Pedra Bonita/Pedra da Gávea and Pretos Forros/ Covanca), the Park represents about 3.5% of the area of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It stands out in the landscape as it´s a great “green” mass in the centre of the metropolis that has about six million inhabitants. Currently, the Tijuca Park is an important recreational area, providing sports sites and the opportunity to contemplate over the nature. There are some of the city’s major landmarks, such as the Christ the Redeemer Statue, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Vista Chinesa (Chinese Belvedere), Mayrink Chapel, Mesa do Imperador (Emperor’s Table) and Lage Park here, which have helped turn the park into an international tourist attraction.

Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon Feia Lagoon One of the most famous views of Rio de Janeiro is Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. From the top of Corcovado Mountain, there are privileged views of this lagoon surrounded by urban buildings. It is possible to enjoy a walk or a cycle ride around the lagoon, which stretches for 7 kms. It is a great place to enjoy the sunny mornings where you will find relaxed leisure activities. There are many tennis, football, basketball and even baseball courts and there are paddleboats available for hire, which share the water harmoniously with rowers, sailors and water-skiers.

Around the 204 thousand square metre lagoon, is the largest outdoor gastronomic centre in Latin America and another one of the recreational areas of the city.

Feia (Ugly) Lagoon is among the largest freshwater lagoons in Brazil and is on the border of the cities of Campos dos Goytacazes and Quissamã in the northern region of the state. Feia Lagoon is approximately 170 km² and is quite popular for artisanal fishing. In the last hundred years, its surface has reduced to one third of its original size. Contrary to what its name signifies, it is a very beautiful and majestic lake. The origin of the misnomer is due to it being discovered on a stormy day.

Jurubatiba Located in the Jurubatiba National Park, in the midst of northern Rio de Janeiro, is Jurubatiba. Here there are several species of flora and fauna, especially orchids and bromeliads. The lagoon has important diversity, as there are remains of the northeastern hinterlands and the Amazon rainforest, also trees typical of the most arid of regions. Alligators, capybaras, armadillos, otters, anteaters, also a considerable number of birds and fish that live in the park next to the lake still remain unstudied.

Araruama Located in the region known as Sun Coast, Araruama Lagoon stands out mainly for the water sports and beauty of its shimmering surface. Depending on the winds, the lake is considered ideal for kitesurfing, windsurfing, hobie cats, jet skiing and sailing. There, are many sailing competitions that take place here too.

Guanabara Bay Guanabara Bay is the backdrop to most pictures that represent Brazil abroad. Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf and the mountains that frame them are the bestknown Brazilian images worldwide with hundreds of islands, cliffs, islands, coves and ridges form its landscape. Among the main ones are: Paquetá, Ilha do Governador, Niterói and Magé. Some islands are part of the city’s history, such as the Fiscal Island, that became famous for having housed the famous Baile da Ilha Fiscal, the last big party of the Empire before the proclamation of the Republic in November 1889.

Others, such as Cobras Island, were strategic points of defence against foreign pirate invaders who arrived in Brazil in search of riches.

ParKs Itatiaia National Park Located in the Itatiaia Massif at Serra da Mantiqueira, between the states of Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais, the Itatiaia National Park is the oldest in Brazil and was created on June 4, 1937. With a tupi origin, its name means “Spiked cliff or pointed stone”. Inside the park is one of the highest peaks in the country, standing 2800 metres high. Hiking, climbing and even scuba diving are some of the activities available for the adventurous.

The site has eight waterfalls and 15 trails that are visited by more than 80,000 people a year. In the lower part of the park, the Blue Lake is a good choice for diving, but it takes a little courage, because the average water temperature is only 12 degrees.

Serra da Bocaina National Park Between the states of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, the Serra da Bocaina National Park comprises of an approximate area of 134,000 hectares and is of significant biodiversity. It is estimated that 60% of the vegetation is from the Atlantic Forest, and the remainder is regenerated forest. Among the species of flora you can find many

kinds of trees and plants, but the most common and easy to spot are pines, cedars, trumpet trees, palm trees and bromeliads. Bird watchers in the park will have a field day as the wild animals aren´t shy. A good tip is to venture onto the Gold Trail, a 3-day walk that passes through historic places, linking São José do Barreiro to Paraty.

Tijuca National Park A fragment of the Atlantic Forest biome and an integral part of the Biosphere Reserve in Rio de Janeiro, the Tijuca National Park is currently the most visited national park in Brazil, receiving over two million visitors per year. Divided into four sectors (Tijuca Forest, Serra da Carioca, Pedra Bonita/Pedra da Gávea and Pretos Forros/ Covanca), the Park represents about 3.5% of the area of the city of Rio de Janeiro. It stands out in the landscape as it´s a great “green” mass in the centre of the metropolis that has about six million inhabitants. Currently, the Tijuca Park is an important recreational area, providing sports sites and the opportunity to contemplate over the nature. Serra dos Órgãos National Park Covering the cities of Guapimirim, Magé, Teresópolis and Petrópolis, the Serra dos Órgãos National Park covers an area of over 20,000 hectares. Its curious name – Organ Mountains – derives from the similarity of the mountain peaks to organ pipes in churches. The park is a popular place for Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism and from May to September, the mountaineering season is open. There are common sports like climbing, hiking, rappelling and others. The most famous trail is the crossing between Petrópolis and Teresópolis, a route that takes three days and is considered the most beautiful walk in the country. In total there is 30 km of hard walking through the mountains passing by such highlights, as the Açu Castle and Pedra do Sino (Bell Stone).

Serra da Tiririca State Park Anyone who has been to Niterói, Itaipuaçu and Itacoatiara, surely must have seen the famous Elephant Rock, which takes its name precisely because its head and body look like a huge elephant, and it is the highest point in Niterói. Perhaps you have heard about climbing Costão de Itacoatiara to see the sun as it slowly descends upon the waters of the sea? Both are tourist attractions in the Serra do Tiririca State Park. A natural boundary between the cities of Niterói and Maricá, Serra da Tiririca starts between the beaches of Itacoatiara and Itaipuaçu and extends to the highway Amaral Peixoto (BR -106) on the border of São Gonçalo. The total area is of 2,400 hectares, including the coastline. Besides various trails of varying difficulty through the undergrowth, the park also has a viewing platform, ideal for people of all ages.

Pedra Branca State Park Situated in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, the Pedra Branca (White Stone) State Park is one of the largest urban forests in the world, at 12,500 hectares. Its highest point of 1025 metres is Pedra Branca Peak, which is located between the neighbourhoods of Jacarepaguá and Vargem Grande, and can be seen from anywhere in the neighbouring areas. The name of the peak was given because it is composed of limestone and is white in colour. Concealed by typical Atlantic Forest vegetation (cedar, jacaranda, jequitiba (cariniana) and ipê (tabebuia)), it is a shelter for the fauna that is home to ocelots, three-toed sloths, anteaters, lowland pacas, armadillos, lizards, Brazilian porcupines, toucans, guans and agoutis.

Ipanema Beach Known worldwide thanks to the song The Girl from Ipanema, by Vinícius de Moraes, Ipanema Beach is one of the most famous in Rio de Janeiro. From its wide strip of sand it is possible to see the Arpoador Rock, Leblon Beach, the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) Mountain, Corcovado and Cagarras Islands. The most popular points along Ipanema Beach are: Posto 9, where, every day, there is a traditional applause as the sunsets below the ocean; Posto 10, a meeting place for young people in the South Zone of Rio; Coqueirão, located in front of the largest area of coconut trees, which attracts a predominantly young audience; and the strip of sand in front of Farme de Amoedo Street, which is known for being the gay point along the seashore.

Arpoador Beach The sunset seen from Arpoador Rock is the major attraction on the Beach here, with a view, not only of the immensity of the sea but as well, to the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers) Mountains. With a 500-metre stretch of sand and big waves, the beach is popular with surfers, one of the most sought after locations in Rio de Janeiro for the sport. On a walk along the beach, you can enjoy gym equipment, sand courts and the Girl from Ipanema Park, which has sports court, a skating rink and a bike path that goes towards Copacabana Fort.

Brava Beach Surrounded by low vegetation and rocky cliffs, Brava Beach is used mostly by fishermen; and surfers who are in search of big waves. Because of its rough sea, the beach doesn´t attract many swimmers but it’s an ideal place for those seeking a location of calmness and beautiful scenery. By not having large numbers, the beach is favourable for sports, such as racquetball and football. It has rustic beach bars along its 660 metre stretch, where fish and drinks are served.

Lopes Mendes Beach With approximately three kilometres of white sand, Lopes Mendes is the most famous beach on Ilha Grande and it is recognised as one of the most beautiful in the world. It always has strong currents and transparent waters, which are an attraction for surfers and swimmers. A deserted place, with no bars, restaurants or hotels, Lopes Mendes is only accessible by boat or along trails, starting from the main town, Vila do Abraão. The beach has plenty of sun, shade and breezes, thus attracting many tourists. The nearest accommodation is on the beaches of Pouso, Mangues and Grande das Palmas.

BeAchEs Itacoatiara Beach

A 30-minute drive from Rio de Janeiro is Itacoatiara Beach, which is located in Niterói and is a popular meeting point for surfers. It stretches for 700 metres and is one of the most frequented places of young people in the region, as there is beautiful scenery all around you. If big waves are not your thing, then another beach is Prainha, which has calmer and clearer waters, and salt marsh vegetation along the beach.

Frequented mostly by locals, the beach attracts visitors looking for a more peaceful place because it is not as crowded as the famous beaches in Rio de Janeiro.

Martim de Sá Beach A deserted white sandy beach, with big waves and surrounded by mountains, Martim de Sá Beach, located in Paraty, is the ideal place if you are in search of a tranquil setting. The main attraction of the beach, besides surfing, is the campsite and it is also the starting point for long treks through the woods and surrounding area. Additionally, you can bath in the waterfall, fish and dive. As an area of environmental protection, Martim de Sá encourages the preservation of the environment with competitions for visitors to collect rubbish that has been left scattered on the ground.

Nossa Senhora da Conceição Church, Angra do Reis, Green Coast

Festa do Divino, takes place every year in May at a party inherited from the Portugueses. It´s about the coronation of a new “Emperor”, who parades with his disciples. In the same city, in July, the FLIP festival takes place. It is the largest literary event in the country with workshops, lectures and exhibitions by leading publishers. In January, in the nearby town of Angra dos Reis, Folia de Reis, is another cultural event that takes folkloric groups to the streets. >> On the Green Coast, in cities like Araruama and São Pedro D´Aldeia, during Corpus Christi, people make a long carpet from salt and sawdust and with these items they draw sacred images along the main streets of the city. >> Caxambu, dance and musical genre with African origin, remains alive in Miracema, North of the state, thanks to the Senzala Caxambu Association of Miracema. The caxambu is traditionally presented on the evening of May 13, at June parties and on holy days. The group sings melodies sung by former slaves, dancing in a circle that moves in a lunar direction, accompanied by drums.

CulTure >> Quissamã, north of the state, still maintains the traditions of the sugar-cane zone farmers, which allowed slaves to sing and dance, with drums, in the slave quarters. But what they did not know was that this festive and joyous event criticized and ridiculed the farm owners. Known as Jongo or Tambor, the tradition is officially celebrated on the night of May 13th. Its origin dates back to the arrival of slaves brought on behalf of the sugar economy of the State of Rio de Janeiro. >> In Paraty , in the Green Coast Region, the traditional

Brazilian cuisine is well evaluated by foreigners The Brazilian cuisine is the result of a great mixture of indigenous, African and European ingredients. Each region has its own style, adapted to the climate and geography. Trying Brazilian cuisine was one of the most popular activities by international tourists who visited Brazil for the FIFA World Cup. According to a study conducted by the Ministry of Tourism in partnership with the Foundation Institute of Economic Research (FIPE), 93.1% of foreigners positively evaluated the country’s cuisine.

In bars, where usually snacks and alcoholic beverages are sold, visits during the games increased, on average by 25%, and in the most popular tourist destinations by foreign tourists recorded an increase of up to 200%, according to the Brazilian Association of Bars and restaurants (ABRASEL).

The cuisine is gaining importance in Brazilian tourism. Data from the National Confederation of Tourism recorded, per year, 10 large events that bring together Brazilians and foreign chefs from traditional restaurants in the country. Moreover, the regional festivals have already exceeded 10,000 editions.

Research of international tourism demand by the Ministry of Tourism (2012), points to food as one of the items with greater approval among foreign visitors: about 90% satisfaction. This proves that the gastronomic tourism is present in both leisure and business.

Amazon Sport Fishing season has already begun Sport fishing, which has recorded a growth of 10% in recent years, stands out among the attractions in the state of Amazonas and reinforces tourist activity in the region. The fishing season occurs from August to March, depending on the region of the Amazon basin.

According to the state tourism company, Amazonastur, the expectation is that about US$ 4 million (R$ 9.52 million) will be injected into the local economy only with tourists visiting the area specifically for fishing.

According to the Minister of Tourism, Vinicius Lages, orderly and sustainable tourism in the region is one of the most promising alternatives to generate income for local populations, given the huge potential of the location.

An increasing number of tourists and fishermen are enjoing catching peacock bass (one of the favourite), arapaima, aruana, bicuda, redtail catfish, Jacunda, pirapatinga, piranhas, traíra and aimará. This season is estimated to receive more than 9,700 tourists, according to the Department of Registration and Inspection of Amazonastur.

As it is a sport, fishermen hook the fish, measure, weigh, take pictures, remove the hook and return them to their habitat.

Americans represent 95% of foreigners who fish in the Amazon. In the United States there are 37.4 million people who partake in sport fishing. They spend US$ 50 million (R$ 119 million) in travel, equipment and licenses according to US Fish and Wildlife Service, the American government agency responsible for caring for fish and wildlife.

Hotels Hotel profits increase with influx of foreign tourists The increased demand by foreign visitors was one of the factors that contributed to the increase in earnings of Brazilian hotels in the second quarter of the year, according to the Bulletin of Economic Performance of Tourism, produced by Fundação Getúlio Vargas.

The movement of these tourists during this period, that includes the first 18 days of the FIFA World Cup, exceeded expectations within the business sector. Even with the increase in occupancy by foreigners, national tourists

were responsible for 80% of the demand in the period from April to June. In comparison with the previous quarter (Jan/Mar), there is a stable demand for hotel rooms by Brazilians, after three successive quarters of growth.

Entrepreneurs also pointed to favourable factors in improving business with the increase in hospitality prices, the investments made by companies and the wider publicity of tourism attractions and itineraries. A report based on information provided by managers of 678

companies with revenues of R$ 8.2 billion in the quarter and 72,367 employees in total makes for interesting reading. The surveyed segments are: parks and tourist attractions; air transport; inbound tourism; hotels; travel agencies; event organizers and tour operators.

This third quarter survey showed 47% of respondents are optimistic about the growth of revenues and 23% think the market will show more stability. But the forecast is increased demand by Brazilian tourists.

Aviation Increased investment in Brazilian airports Due to mega events hosted in Brazil, such as the World Youth Day, Confederations Cup, FIFA World Cup and The Olympic Games, which will be held in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian cities have been receiving infrastructure investment for the development of comfort, service and quality of services geared towards the tourism sector. Airports have received a total of R$ 11.3 billion of investment in the last three years. According to the Department of Civil Aviation (SAC), the amount was responsible for increasing passenger numbers to 70 million per year. In 2014, 285 million people passed through Brazilian airports, surpassing the 215 million in 2011. Moreira Franco, minister of SAC, said this is the biggest injection of funds that Brazilian airports have received in recent years. It caters for the strong growth that the country has seen in the last decade, trebling airplane movements.

Business Tourism grows in Brazil >> Business and Event tourists spend on average US$ 304 per day in Brazil, according to the “Survey of Economic Impact of International Events Held in Brazil”, by FGV (Fundação Getúlio Vargas) for Embratur (Brazilian Tourist Board). This amount is four times greater than the expenditure of international tourists visiting the country for Leisure, which have a daily spend of US$ 73.77.

The survey was conducted during 16 international events held in five regions in the country, between March and August this year, and surveyed 1,659 participants. The study shows that the most visited cities by foreign tourists on Business are: Rio de Janeiro (33.2%), São Paulo (16.7%), Foz do Iguaçu (6%), Manaus (6%), Belém (4.5%) and Salvador (4.4%). Out of the respondents, 67.6% were in Brazil for the first time

and 60% of those who have visited the country before were here for Business and Events. The most visited cities in the previous trip were Rio de Janeiro (27%), São Paulo (22.1%), Florianópolis (4.9%), Salvador (4.6%) and Foz do Iguaçu (3.6%).

When asked about the host city of the event, 74% of respondents said that the image was positive. Among those who plan to stay in the city of the event, the average stay is three days.

Regarding the receptiveness of locals and the service industry, 92% rated it as good or regular.

The organization of each trip was also the subject of the study and showed that for 64.6% of respondents the fact that the event had been held in Brazil positively influenced the decision to participate. Most respondents (52%) organized the trip themselves.

Altogether, 45% of participants contacted the

organization of the event directly in Brazil to gather information on tourism services and products, while 20% used the Internet.

The results show the importance that the segment has for tourism and how it should be prioritized in policies to promote tourism in Brazil within the international market.

In the last ten years, the conferences and business conventions held in Brazil rose by 408%. According to data released in May by the ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association), between 2003 and 2013, the total number of events increased from 62 to 315.

In the same period, the number of cities that hosted this type of event rose 145%, from 22 to 54. A ranking led by the United States shows that Brazil remained among the ten countries that stage the most conferences and conventions.

Number of English tourists in Brazil grows 9% in a year >> During the World Cup, England was the third source of tourists visiting Brazil and the first country from the European continent. According to the Minister of Tourism, Vinicius Lages, the number of English tourists in Brazil increased 9% between 2012 and 2013. Today, England figures in 10th position in the ranking of country’s that emit visitors to Brazil. Targeting the importance of the market for the Brazilian tourism sector, Lages said in the interview below that the Ministry of Tourism (Tourism Ministry) has been working with England to facilitate tourism between the countries. “We have an agreement for training Brazilian students in England.

The idea is to put Brazil on the same level of excellence as the biggest tourist powerhouses in terms of quality of service and professionalism”, said the minister.

FOLHA DO TURISMO - What is the profile of the English tourist visiting Brazil? With the FIFA World Cup, tis he tendency for it to change?

Vinicius Lages - English tourists, traveling for pleasure or on business, mainly visit the cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Foz do Iguaçu. In Brazil, the English people prefer to stay at friends and relatives (43%) and a representative portion of them travel alone (44%). The average stay is between 10 and 15 days. According to research conducted by the Ministry of Tourism, English tourists were ranked in third place of international visitors during the FIFA World Cup. The FIFA World Cup attracted a qualified audience, with greater purchasing power. The foreign tourists who came to Brazil for the tournament, on average, had a household

the first from the European continent, emitting 6.8% of all foreign visitors who came to the country. The first were Argentina (21%) and then the United States (14.5%), thus it is considered to be a high priority for us to work on with our promotional activities.

FT - How many English tourists visited Brazil during the World Cup 2014? In which position are they in the ranking of tourists that most visited Brazil?

Vinicius Lages - England was the third largest source of tourists coming to Brazil during the World Cup and

FT - What agreements and projects are the Ministry of Tourism developing along with England in order to facilitate tourism between countries?

Vinicius Lages - We have an agreement for training Brazilian students in England. The Ministry of Tourism is conducting a selection process to send 50 Tourism students on 3-month qualification courses. It is the second stage of the international qualification program. The idea is to put Brazil on the same level of excellence of the biggest tourist powerhouses in terms of quality of service and professionalism.

FT - In relation to transport, there is a project that aims to expand the number of flights to the destination in order to facilitate the arrival of tourists in Brazil?

Vinicius Lages - Connectivity is an important item to boost domestic and international tourism. Therefore, the Ministry of Tourism, Embratur and state governments are constantly working on expanding the network. It’s important, however, that the decision to create new routes depends, ultimately, on the airlines.

From the point of view of infrastructure, we are ready to increase the number of planes landing at our airports, which practically doubled their capacity in the 12 host cities for the FIFA World Cup.

Brazil prepares itself to welcome more English visitors >> In 2013, 169,732 tourists from England visited Brazil. The country is one of the main markets for Brazilian tourism. With this in view, the Brazilian Tourist Board (Embratur) last year, reopened the Brazilian Tourism Office (EBT) in London, in an attempt to establish a closer contact with local tour operators and to diversify the tourist products offered. The EBT received an award in September this year as “Best Promotion Office of South America in the UK” by Travel Bulletin Star Awards 2014.

In this interview, Vicente Neto, president of Embratur, highlights the importance of major events and the work on promotion being done overseas to consolidate Brazil as a leisure and business destination for international tourists.

FOLHA DO TURISMO - What is the importance of the English market for Brazil?

Vicente Neto - According to the Aquarela Plan 2020, a publication that guides the promotion strategies of Embratur, England is a country of high priority for tourism in Brazil. This classification was performed by its importance for global tourism, accessibility and interest in Brazilian destinations. Given the participation of this country, we have developed various promotional initiatives to increase the knowledge of these tourists in Brazilian tourist destinations and thus contribute in attracting more English visitors to our country. Europe, today is the second largest source for tourism in Brazil, only behind South America. Among European countries, England is one of the biggest markets. To get an idea, during the FIFA World Cup, 40,000 England tourists visited Brazil putting, England in 3rd position among countries that emitted the most tourists during the competition.

FT - How many tourists from England did Brazil receive in 2013? What is the forecast for the next few years?

Vicente Neto - The number of tourists from the England has been increasing in

recent years. In 2013 Brazil received 169,732 visitors from England, occupying 10th position. With these numbers, England, of course, is on the list of priority markets for promotional activities by Embratur. Besides the opportunity of great sporting events to be held in Brazil, the English market, specifically, has a positive context of considerable recovery from the global financial crisis. To take advantage of this moment of recovery, our strategy is to involve various actors, public policy and private sector partners to achieve different profiles of new visitors.

FT - In what strategies is Embratur working in England to publicise and promote Brazil?

Vicente Neto - England is one of 13 countries with constant promotion of Brazil through the Brazilian Tourist Office (EBT). Based in London, the office strongly promotion Brazilian destinations, taking detailed information to professionals and prospecting new business opportunities for Brazilian tourism. Including constant workshops and roadshows, Embratur promoted in England two editions of Goal to Brazil, an event that brought excellent results for tourism promotion in the country. The UK is also the target of advertising campaigns

by Brazil, via various media. In addition, the Public Relations of Embratur promote press trips with the English press, in addition to having a daily relationship with local media.

FT - What are the Embratur news for WTM 2014?

Vicente Neto - The Brazil stand is among the largest of the Americas countries, with a total area of 405 m². It has an island format, with space to host 52 Brazilian coexhibitors, among them, private companies and public bodies that are interested in publicising their products and destinations abroad. The WTM is one of the most important fairs abroad when it comes to introducing Brazil. It is important to involve everybody who wishes to maintain product visibility and expand business abroad, considering that it is an excellent time to make business contacts. The Brazil stand has been prepared to provide the best working conditions for professional participants of fairs and highlights the essence of Brazil through the fulfilment of parallel initiatives, such as lectures, cocktail parties, destinations and cultural attraction presentations. During this edition, the results of the World Cup in 2014 for tourism will also be presented.

FT - What are the main barriers to hinder the export of British tourist to Brazil?

What is being done in this area in order to facilitate tourism between countries?

Vicente Neto - In relation to barriers, I emphasise that they are declining as Brazil is advancing in its ability to host international visitors. Since 2009, Embratur has signed a cooperation agreement with VisitBritain (British agency responsible for tourism), with the objective of increasing the inflow of foreign visitors and income in both countries before, during and after the Olympic Games in London (2012), FIFA World Cup (2014) and the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, which will take place in 2016. The London Games have left a legacy that is already visible for the country. Be aware of the importance of tourism to England before the games were crucial so they could start reaping the fruits that they had sown.

Our expectation is to do it like they did, who used London as the first step for tourists that continued visiting other UK destinations.

World Travel Market (WTM)

WTM is a strong brand that has been developed over the years >> World Travel Market (WTM), the leading global event of the travel industry that takes place in London every year, generated US$ 3.3 billion in business during the 2013 edition. This is just a number that exemplifies the extremely strong brand that has been developed over the years, according to the director of WTM, Simon Press.

WTM LA, WTM Africa and WTM London are part of the major global events related to the travel industry. The successful launch of WTM-LA, in São Paulo, shows the importance of the development of the tourism industry within the Brazilian market, he adds.

FOLHA DO TURISMO - WTM 2014 is celebrating 35 years of business in the tourism industry. Forty countries, 221 exhibitors and 9,000 professional visitors attended the first WTM in London in 1980. After 35 years, WTM has over 5,000 exhibitors from 186 countries and regions and 50,000 participants. What is the importance of this brand and what assessment can we make of this development over the decades?

Simon Press - In the last three and a half decades, WTM has established itself as a tourist event where the industry can perform and conduct business. WTM 2013, for example, generated £2.2 billion (US$ 3.3 billion) in business for the travel industry, a huge amount, and WTM 2014 will generate even more. Using its extremely strong brand that has been developed over the years, WTM has grown its portfolio of events around the world, including WTM Latin America, WTM Africa, the Arabian Travel Market and, of course, WTM London. These are the leading global events for the travel industry.

FT - At WTM 2014 will it be possible to find more than 150 new exhibitors.

What are the highlights for this edition?

Simon Press - This year we have found a strong interest of exhibitors in the UK and Ireland, which means that the event is almost

FT - How would you rate the current situation of Tourism in the world? Specifically in Brazil, is it possible to see some evolution in the coming years?

Simon Press - The global economy is beginning to recover after the recent financial crisis. A significant number of destinations around the world are opening the doors to heavy investment in tourism, making the segment a key driver of socioeconomic progress through revenue that includes exports, job creation and infrastructure development. According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the arrival

FT - What are the types of challenges that the tourism industry has faced and will face in 2014?

Simon Press - Due to the diversity of the industry, we are constantly faced with the challenges of the sector, such as the recent plane disasters that have featured in the news. Our report “The World Travel Market 2013 Industry Report” also concluded that political instability and taxes are considered the main factors that create the biggest concerns for business travel worldwide.

However, despite all the setbacks, the tourism industry remains positive and with good expectations for 2015.

FT - Did you watch the 2014 FIFA World Cup? What did you think of Brazil’s performance and what awaits the country as an exhibitor at WTM in London?

Simon Press - It certainly was a busy year for Brazil, as the country was put in the global limelight during the weeks of the FIFA World Cup, and with that the government seemed to focus on public policies to develop domestic tourism. This concentration was aimed at trying to lower internal transport, develop professional tourism, infrastructure and training for the sector. With this, the country could offer better tourism products for those traveling to the country. We look forward to welcoming Brazil to WTM London in November, and find out what their plans are and what the country is promoting, since the world will be looking to it again soon for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Gastronomy

The rich cultural diversity - built over decades by its mestizo people – that is present in folklore, music, dances and religious ceremonies, does not go unnoticed by European tourists arriving at Salvador International Airport. The party atmosphere is constantly felt on and around the streets of Salvador, where hundreds of craft shops sell a little pieces of art from the warm and friendly people of Bahia. To see Bahia’s art you can visit the Modelo Market, with dozens of stalls with permanent display’s of regional crafts. On the events calendar, Carnival is the highlight, with its electric trios (truck or float equipped with a high powered sound system and a music group on the roof, playing to the crowd), and São João, with its rhythms, dances and cultural flavours.

Local dishes like acarajé, moqueca and vatapá, with their strong seasoning, form part of the menu in bars and restaurants. Remember that Bahian cuisine has a strong influence of African and Portuguese cultures. The pepper and palm oil are some of the traditional ingredients in the seasoning of dishes. Couscous and tapioca with sweet or savoury fillings are eaten at breakfast and for an afternoon snack. Coconut, hog plums, cashew, buriti, cocoa, cherry, umbu, cupuaçu and passionfruit juices and ice creams complement the menu. Desserts made with coconut (cocada) and egg (quindim) are some of the favourites. It’s worth trying too, the cassava cake, tapioca pudding and sweets and juices from seasonal fruit.

The nature of the coast of Bahia is abundant: from the spectacle provided by humpback whale watching (Abrolhos is the biggest reproductive area in the south of the state) and the Tamar Project that protects sea turtles, in Praia do Forte. The Coral Coast is well worth a visit and here you will find the Maraú Peninsula. Between the two natural paradises of Morro de São Paulo and Itacaré, there is unique natural beauty, of freshwater lagoons, mangroves, virgin forests, coconut groves, natural pools and beaches littered with reefs.

Contrary to what many think, Bahia is not only fun, it is also a business capital. Corporate tourism has registered a steady growth in recent years. In the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) ranking released this year, Salvador occupied eighth place among the 10 Brazilian cities that promoted events of ICCA standard in 2013. The hotels have convention centres and the Salvador and Northern Region Convention and Visitors Bureau attracted 57 events, of which 10 were international.

Culture The mixture of races, colours and flavours makes Alagoas a unique State. The local crafts are visible on the doors of the houses and the filet (typical lace from Alagoas) occupies an important position in the community’s economy. The architecture of cities such as Marechal Deodoro shows the scars of its colonial past. To understand the history of Maceió, it’s worth visiting the neighbourhoods of Jaraguá and Centro. In the Coruripe Plant, you can visit the production processes of sugar and alcohol. Nature Alagoas has excursions both for relaxing and for adventure seekers on the desert vegetation trails of Caatinga. The Francês Beach promotes harmony among surfers and swimmers. In Gunga Beach, in Barra de São Miguel, travellers can enjoy the calm and pristine waters and admire the cliffs, steep rocks sculpted by nature with coloured sand.

As well as mussels, shrimps, fish, crabs and octopus also stand out. The mixture of flavours offers a wide variety of meats, sauces and desserts, such as cake roll.

Artistic and cultural activities in the state are not only located in the capital, João Pessoa. Other cities in Paraíba have distinguished themselves with cultural productions, such as Campina Grande.

There are dances, which are mostly linked to religious and popular festivities. They are the Carnival and June Parties that come with the summer and the winter. They have religious characteristics, like the celebrations of the patrons that take place in various cities in Paraíba, at different times throughout the year.

The mixing of nationalities has made the local cuisine a reference in the North-eastern region. João Pessoa also wants to be a corporate destination, featured in the MICE segment. No wonder that it is possible to see large investment in the area. The capital of Paraíba is among the 15 Brazilian cities that hold international events, according to the latest ICCA ranking.

An example of this investment is the infrastructure projects that have helped improve the state in recent years. The city currently has a wide hotel network. The New Convention Centre Poet Ronaldo Cunha Lima has capacity for more than 10,000 people, José Lins do Rego Cultural Centre can also host up to 10,000 people, and the Convention Centre Tropical Hotel Tambaú has capacity for 1,500 people.

With over 130 km of coastline, Paraíba is made up of a succession of surprises that need to be unravelled calmly. It is in João Pessoa that the sun raises first (in relation to other places in Brazil) at around 5h. With this, the days begin early and nights don’t finish late. The natural pools of Picãozinho are beautiful and attract many people at low tide, especially in high season. The Cabo Branco Lighthouse is another postcard of João Pessoa.

Culture The culture of Ceará is diverse with many remarkable features. In the capital Fortaleza, on Iracema Beach, is the English Bridge, one of the principle attractions of the city, and the Dragão do Mar Center of Art and Culture. Pará, is to appreciate this biodiversity at close hand and the varied ecosystems that make up this rich Amazonian setting.

When it comes to Belém all thoughts refer to the Cirio de Nazaré, the Ver-o-Peso Market and the duck in tucupi, a traditional local dish. The state capital, however, has much more to offer. The Dock Station has glass walls, is fully air conditioned and has the status as a cultural and dining hub, with bars, restaurants, art exhibitions and cinemas. The same formula was used in the old prison São José, renamed as Jeweler Pole and now houses the Museum of the Gems and the Casa do Artesão (Craftsman House). There is also the Casa das Onze Janelas (House of Eleven Windows), a charming townhouse transformed into an art gallery.

The city also features the glamour of Theatro da Paz, Se Cathedral and Basilica of Nazareth, points of arrival and departure of the Cirio, the largest Catholic procession in the country with over two million participants.

Gastronomy

Nature Pará has rich fauna and a very diverse flora, resulting from constant temperatures and heavy rain that mark the landscape of the Amazon Basin, where the state is located. There are over 2,000 species of fish, some 950 types of bird and 300 types of mammals that inhabit the region. The lush forests have ancient specimens of trees, like samaumeira and curious animals, including many that are still being researched and discovered by scholars from Amazônia. Visiting

The delicacy is served boiling hot, despite the heat wave present in the capital all year.

MICE Belém has the Hangar Convention Centre of the Amazon, it is the boldest and most strategic venue equipped to host events of national and international size. The venue occupies an area of 12 thousand square meters and is already one of the largest and most modern in the country. The Hangar has auditoriums, parking, a lobby, an exhibition hall, food court, modular rooms, warehouses, open-air exhibition areas and a helipad. There are two floors, with at least 30 different areas upstairs and another 30 on the ground floor. The auditorium, which hosts various activities, has 500 seats.

Culture is very striking in the state, especially in indigenous habitats.

Another point of reference is the Amazonas Theatre, located in the capital Manaus. It hosts performances throughout the year. However, the highlight in Amazonas State is undoubtedly the Festival of Parintins, a folklore show from the northern region, which is held in the last week of June, at Bumbódromo, The event is marked by the presentation of two communities with a parade where they revive the Amazonian legends and traditions. Last year, the traditional feast of oxen Garantido and Caprichoso completed its 100th year.

The cuisine is based on fish and fruit, with the emphasis on a much sough after type of fish broth, which is common in restaurants.

The main ingredients used in dishes are freshwater fish, cassava flour, jambu, chicory and regional fruits. The capital has restaurants where the ingredients come in refined versions and as well more traditional restaurants where you can try the homemade spices from traditional family recipes.

Nature Amazonas contains the largest tropical vegetation on the planet and is home to most of the Amazon rainforest, with its extensive biodiversity, seen as the richest in the world. In addition, the seasonality that occurs in the forest offers two different scenarios, allowing visitors to experience the forest in times of droughts and floods. All this greenery is home to 60% of all the life forms on the planet, which can be exploited by Ecotourism.

MICE The events in the city have a new home with the opening in July 2014 of the Vasco Vasques Convention Center of Amazonas. The complex had R$ 47.69 million invested in it, which was financed by the state government and the Ministry of Tourism. The site covers eight thousand square metres and has capacity for up to 4,500 people. The initial project was altered so that the convention centre could have integrated access to the Arena da Amazônia, the stadium where the World Cup games were held and which adjoins the Sambadrome of Manaus and the Amadeu Teixeira Sport Arena.

The Federal Capital of Brazil was inaugurated on April 21st, 1960 by President Juscelino Kubitschek, who sought to integrate the country around the Central Plateau region, thus Brasilia attracted people from every region. The city has since been recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its architectural and urban setting. It was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and Lúcio Costa who are two of Brazil´s most famous architects. Brasilia is the largest UNESCO listed site in the world, spread over 112.5 square kilometers, and has the largest urban park in Latin America, the City Park. With four million trees, the city has an average of 120 square meters of green area per inhabitant, four times more than recommended level set out by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The two giant domes of the National Congress create the biggest landmark of the city, and nobody leaves without knowing where the Legislative Power is. Monuments, palaces, sculptures, water features and gardens blot the landscape. The city is divided into blocks, that were built in the reddish soil of the Cerrado 60 years ago. Some of the buildings are even more beautiful at night, like the Metropolitan Cathedral, whose famous curved pillars stand out at the Monumental Axis. The Palácio da Alvorada, the official residence of the President of the Republic, has fronted arches and the interior is decorated with paintings

by Volpi, Di Cavalcanti tapestries and sculptures by Victor Brecheret.

The mixture of seasonings left from the first residents of Brasilia, mixed with flavours from around the world brought by the embassies of various countries present in the city, assured the Federal Capital, the title of the third gastronomic centre of Brazil. On a gastronomic tour of Brasilia, residents and visitors can spend a pleasant evening in the restaurants by Paranoá lake enjoying excellent lunches or enjoying fine food with a bit of history in the restaurants of Vila Planalto.

Nature

The host of national and international events of all sizes and themes, Brasília has auditoriums, social clubs, stadiums, gymnasiums, rooms and venues in hotels. The FIFA World Cup was a big window of opportunity for tourism in Brasilia. There were more than 630,000 visitors during the period that were interested in the peculiar characteristics of the city. The capital will host a round of Stock Car next year, and will be the secondary venue of the 2016 Olympics. It will also host the 8th World Water Forum in 2018 and the Summer Universiade in 2019. The hotels meet the highest standards of global service. At the Airport - the third largest in the country in terms of air traffic – the city is linked to all state capitals and major cities in Brazil, as well as Europe and the United States.

Located in Cerrado, the second largest biome in Brazil, the Federal District is also a venue for adventure tourism. Only in Paranoá Lake, for example, can you go diving, windsurfing and sailing. Abseiling, mountain biking and paragliding are also on the list of possibilities offered in the region. The Olhos D’Água Park has trails with animals and native cerrado vegetation. The Frog Lagoon, traversed by two bridges, is one of the main local attractions. One of the most beautiful natural lakes of the Federal District, Bonita Lagoon is a refuge for wild animals of the savannah. It is located 38 kilometres from Brasília.

Mato Grosso do Sul Strategically located in the Midwest, the state of Mato Grosso do Sul has 2.3 million inhabitants dispersed across 78 cities. The capital is Campo Grande and currently has a population that touches 750,000 inhabitants. With the city of Bonito and the Pantanal enriching the region, it should be enough for Mato Grasso do Sul to have a state capital that welcomed tourists well and pointed them on their way to the eco and adventure tourism beauties. Besides the planned organisation, you can find numerous green areas like Nações Indígenas Park, with wide boulevards, skate parks, courts and an arena theatre. It is also worth visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Don Bosco Museum of Culture, which has a good number of indigenous people who inhabited and still inhabit the state. In Central Fair, sightseers will find crafts and typical dishes from the region.

In Mato Grosso do Sul, one of the dishes that gain the most attention is soba - noodles with shredded omelette. The recipe is Japanese and has been present in the state since the early 20th century. The city of Campo Grande was the first city to have restaurants serving soba, after Japanese immigrants who arrived from Okinawa in 1908 introduced it to the state. Pantanal cuisine has a menu that is influenced by other South American countries.

We can highlight Pacu, Pintado (cat fish) and Dourado (salminus brasiliensis), fish that can be fried, boiled or baked and served with piranha broth.

Nature The city of Bonito and the whole area of the South Pantanal boast sights that amaze its visitors. You will see animals floating in natural aquariums as Bonito is the heart of Brazilian ecotourism.

The best time to visit it is between December and March, during the rainy season, when vegetation is green and rivers are high.

MICE Bonito is consolidated as one of the best ecotourism destinations in Brazil, but the city also offers complete event infrastructure, with various types of accommodation, a modern convention centre, which is accessible by air and land. The Bonito Convention Centre can accommodate up to 2000 people. The centre has five auditoriums and a large exhibition hall and both are air-conditioned. Furthermore, multipurpose areas, a restaurant, ample parking and green areas complete the venue.

About 60% of the national heritage is in Minas Gerais. Ouro Preto, Tiradentes, Diamantina and Congonhas do Campo are just some of the many cities that still preserve the Baroque style. A place worth visiting is the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Ouro Preto, as it is considered one of the masterpieces of Brazilian baroque. Be sure to observe the facades, statues and other works of art that are made with soapstone.

For history lovers, you will learn about the process of Brazilian independence in the Museu da Inconfidência (Conspiracy Museum).

The mixture of indigenous, African, Portuguese and drovers food has made the local cuisine a reference in the country. The artisanal cheese production in Serro, Serro da Canastra and Serra do Salitre were declared as Intangible Cultural Heritages of Brazil.

The traditional cheese bread and dulce de leche are irresistible and you must try feijão tropeiro (beans with fl our, bacon and eggs), tutu à mineira (beans with flour, sausage and cabbage), torresmo (crackling) and, of course, cachaça (distilled spirit made from sugarcane juice).

Nature The greatest natural attractions of Minas Gerais are the lagoons, rivers, caves and waterfalls. Rafting, tubing and canoeing are popular sports in Serra do Cipó. Hiking trails lead to beautiful waterfalls, providing an ideal setting for rest after a long walk. Minas Gerais has some of the richest subsoil in the country. Two thousand caves with inscriptions on them have been catalogued and some amazing formations of stalactites and stalagmites can been seen throughout the underground system.

MICE The state capital of Minas Gerais is Belo Horizonte, a destination increasingly sought after by business events. The city offers an excellent hotel infrastructure and large event venues such as ExpoMinas, one of the most modern convention centres in Brazil, and MinasCentro.

Then there is the Mountainous Region, marked by its greenery and fresh mountain air.

Talking about culture and not mentioning Carnival is like committing a crime, as there are more than 200 street parties and 20 samba schools that plan and make costumes throughout the whole year.

They then play on the streets and parade down the Sambadrome in February and March of every year. Another exciting and profitable party is on New Year’s Eve in Copacabana. When combining these two events, Rio de Janeiro might already be happy with the quality of events it stages, but it is not. Among the great events that the city hosts are the International Film Festival, Free Film Festival, Book Fair, Fashion Rio and Anima Mundi. State wide, the museums also attract many visitors. For e.g. the Imperial Museum in Petropolis, the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) in the capital and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) in Niterói.

What can we say about the success of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil?

Rio de Janeiro became an example and is prepared to host large events and conventions. The flagship of this infrastructure is the RioCentro convention centre. It can cater for up to 20,500 people and is already having a hotel built on site as it is prepared to host large events. Other hotel chains also add to this important list of convention centres. The Windsor Barra Hotel is a prime example as it has a 5,000 capacity convention centre on its ground floor.

The Royal Tulip Hotel has capacity for 3,000 people, Marina da Glória, with two conference rooms totalling 4.100 m², and Pier Maua has two conference rooms of 3,500 m² each.

It is true that nature has been generous to the state of Rio de Janeiro. Besides the natural beauty that the state capital possesses (world-famous beaches, the Botanical Garden and many other wonders) the other regions also attract tourist’s attention. The Green Coast Region, located on the southern coast, has a multitude of islands and vast mountains covered by Atlantic Forest. In the Sun Coast Region, on the north coast, there are hundreds of beautiful beaches, lagoons and perfect sea for fishing and diving.

Feijoada on Saturdays and BBQ on Sundays, the gastronomy of Rio may be heavy but at times it can be lighter. It just depends on you! The local cuisine is related to Portuguese gastronomy, which was altered and adapted to the Brazilian culture. Traditional dishes are based on cod, an obvious and delicious Portuguese heritage that lives until today without many changes. Lastly, don’t forget: for starters choose cod balls or pastels.

Culture As part of the political and economic history of Brazil, São Paulo is practically an open-air museum, with neighbourhoods and buildings of great historic value. There are interesting attractions of science, politics, religion and there are a wide variety of museums and art galleries that have collections of different styles and from different eras. Among the most famous museums of the city are the Museum of Art of São Paulo (MASP), Ipiranga Museum, Museum of Sacred Art, Museum of the Portuguese Language and the Pinacoteca of the State of São Paulo. Nature Definitely, the State of São Paulo is a paradise for ecotourists. Traditionally, locals season food with lots of herbs and spices, which is one of the hallmarks of Brazilian cuisine in São Paulo: a wide variety of flavours are prepared within the city.

Espírito Santo Well located, Espírito Santo is a state that separates the North and South of the country. The capital, Vitória, is far from being considered a megalopolis, unlike its neighbours Rio and São Paulo. In the capital, the architectural wonder and detail charm most onlookers and a walk around the centre reveals beautiful and old buildings as Vitória is the third oldest city in the country. Even before becoming the capital of Espírito Santo, it had chapels, fortresses and attractions that today are historic monuments that bring the history of domination to the island, the struggle of the natives and development. When leaving Vitória, the city of Vila Velha, the oldest in the state, also has many surprises and museums that are worth a visit.

The fishing tradition and the heritage of indigenous and black culture has profoundly influenced local cuisine. With the arrival of European immigrants, new dishes were added. Among the most famous dishes are torta capixaba (seafood pie), moqueca (seafood stew), Muma de siri and caranguejada (both have crab as its main ingredient). Internationally famous, the moqueca is the most famous dish in local cuisine. The Italians however, gave Anholini, the Tortei, the pavese soup, risotto and polenta to the local gastronomy. People from Minas Gerais and Bahia also contributed dishes such as the Péla-égua (hominy with pork cutlet) and vatapá.

Nature The landscape of Vitória is an attraction in itself. There is also 91 m² of green area per inhabitant, with stretches of preserved Atlantic Forest and a tropical climate with an average temperature of 23° C. The city is surrounded by the Vitória Harbour and by an estuary formed from rivers that have beaches, hills, creeks, parks, mangroves and ecological reserves with trails and places for physical and cultural activities. The central mountain is the Fonte Grande standing at 309 metres. The beaches of Camburi and Ilha do Boi are cited as the best in town. On Sundays, the main road running along Camburi beach is closed to traffic. Thus, giving everybody more space for leisure and relaxation.

MICE Evolution. That is the key word to express what Vitória and all other cities in the state are going through. Espírito Santo recognizes the importance of tourism and is also investing so that they can attract corporate events. The Vitória Convention Centre has 15 distinct venues, with rooms for between 40 and 2,000 people. It also has the 3rd floor exclusively set aside with eight meeting rooms with capacity from 40 up to 230 people. In addition, more hotels are under construction, focusing on the corporate market.

The best place to see them is at the Right Whale Environmental Protection Area (APA), a region composed by nine cities.

The remnants of German colonisation that was left by the first immigrants can be seen in the local cuisine. There are traditional festivities and architecture in cities such as Blumenau, Joinville, Pomerode and Brusque, with its half-timbered buildings and flowery and well-cared for streets. In October, at least 12 cities relive the traditions of the German colonies with festivals like Oktoberfest in Blumenau and Fenarreco in Brusque. The Italian culture, on the other hand, has its core of colonisation in the region and is present in cities like Nova Trento. When visiting Santa Catarina, you will find a single state with multiple and diverse attractions, where culture and entertainment are some of the ingredients.

Gastronomy

Nature In the Serra Catarinense mountains, there are two possible Eco tours, which are true spectacles of mesmerizing beauty that are only two hours from the coast. If you go up into the mountains, then a stay in one of the rural lodges and farm hotels is a must. There, you can go horseback riding and live the country life. In Urubici, another city in the region, you will find the best spots to try out adventure tourism such as abseiling, canoeing, horseback riding and flowing some hiking trails. Whale watching, on the other hand, takes place on the coast between July and November, during the mating season.

The influence of European colonisation is present in Santa Catarina’s gastronomy, whether in restaurants serving typical regional food or during traditional celebrations. Among the delicacies is mallard duck with purple cabbage and various delights from Azorean cuisine, like the traditional and famous “Sequence of Shrimp”, which is found in restaurants near Lagoa da Conceição or even in restaurants in São Francisco do Sul. These dishes awake the appetite and the palate of even the most demanding of connoisseurs, a true gastronomic tour that also includes pies and cakes (cuca) for dessert.

MICE Florianópolis stages major international events. According to the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Florianópolis ranks joint fourth with Porto Alegre, staging 14 events. The city is only behind the big cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Foz do Iguaçu.

The capital of Santa Catarina attracts events through the Florianópolis Convention & Visitors Bureau. The main public venue for events in the state is the CentroSul. The travel and tourism sector generates 12.5% of the GDP in the state, and more than 510,000 jobs across the tourism industry.

Culture is very present in local cities. They preserve their history that has been passed down from generation to generation, whether through its language, dances or costumes, especially by the Germans and Italians who settled here years ago. The cultural tour of Porto Alegre starts with an obligatorily visit to the Historical Centre. It is here, at the edge of Guaiba, between narrow cobblestone streets, where 80% of listed buildings in the state capital are and if you have time, you can visit the Municipal Market too. The local festivities are examples of these traditions that are attracting more and more tourists to the destination, including Natal Luz (Light of Christmas) in Gramado or the Chocolate Festival at Easter in the same city.

The local cuisine has a tradition of beef jerky and BBQ’s. The cattle here is part of people’s lives, from the beginning of the colonisation and therefore roasting meat over a fire pit is the main dish of the region. Its preparation is simple and just has a few ingredients.

Culture is very rich in Paraná, as the state has received contributions from immigrants who have come from all parts of the world. All this mix can be experienced in more than 50 museums, fairs, cultural and gastronomic festivals, music and dance performances, crafts and also in the daily lives of Paraná people. On a tour in Curitiba, you must visit the famous Botanical Gardens, home to species of Brazilian native plants and a water fountain.

Its metal structure was inspired by European gardens. Another attraction in Curitiba is the Pedreiras Park, which has lakes, typical vegetation, water falls and the Wire Opera House and the Paul Leminski Cultural venue.

Paraná’s cuisine is a mixture of influences from everybody who has settled in the region, like Indigenous people, the Portuguese and the drovers who brought several dishes from places they previously visited. The pinion is a very present element in local cuisine. The Indigenous population used to eat leaves of yerba mate as food but from this, the drinking of mate tea has become a national heritage; as well as the native fruit and roots.

Nature Paraná stands out when it comes to nature and its preservation.

Parks in Paraná are an excellent way to relax and for ecotourism, leisure activities and for environmental education, such as the National Park of Iguaçu and the State Park of Vila Velha. Iguaçu Falls, with more than two hundred waterfalls, is the main attraction in the state and one of the greatest natural spectacles on the planet.

MICE The different destinations in Paraná have excellent infrastructure for conducting events such as conferences, seminars and business meetings. Event overcomes initial forecast and attracts a million foreign tourists >> The volume of foreign tourists in Brazil during the FIFA World Cup 2014 surpassed the original estimate of 600,000 and reached 1 million. These figures are much celebrated by the Government: “We experienced those days in such a fantastic party. Again, the Brazilian people revealed their capacities to welcome people. Again, the Brazilian people, the federal government, state governments, the mayors of the 12 host cities, and without a doubt, fans and all football lovershad a party, which I’m sure, was one of the most beautiful in the world”, said President Dilma Rousseff.

The Tourism Minister, Vinicius Lages, highlighted the advances of the National Program for Access to Technical Education and Employment (Pronatec) and funds that allowed the expansion of the hotel industry in the country. “I believe that events of this magnitude are important for the country’s economy. We have been recognized by the French press as the best World Cup”, he explained. The minister highlighted a survey of 6,200 tourists about the experience. “Out of total, 61% visited the country for the first time. We had visitors from 202 countries and we were able to verify that 83% acknowledged

World Cup increased occupation rates in Brazilian resorts The World Cup was good business for the resorts segment. The occupancy rate in June was 43%, an increase of 9% over the same period last year, according to the Brazilian Association of Resorts (Resorts Brazil). The increase is mainly due to the presence of national teams and their delegations in the country. The hotels located near the host cities were the ones that benefited the most, according to the Brazilian Association of Resorts. “Overall, the resorts had an above average June. However, it was an abnormal increase. The Northeast and the Southeast showed better performance than the South”, says Daniel Guijarro, president of Resorts Brazil. Last year, 1.45 million people stayed in resorts in Brazil, of which 164,800 were foreigners. Resorts Brazil, which brings together the largest hotels of this kind in the country, look to markets like Germany, Netherlands, Chile, Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay.

During the 32-day event (June 12th to July 13th), international visitors made transactions totalling US$ 380 million with their Visa cards in Brazil, an increase of 143% over the same period last year. Touristsspent US$ 122 million more compared to the South African World Cup in 2010 (June 11th to July 11th, 2010), when US$ 258 million was spent using VISA cards.

>> The 2014FIFA World Cup confirmed that Brazil is capable of organizing and hosting major international events. Foreign visitors took the opportunity of Brazil staging the World Cup to visit the country, including Rio de Janeiro, the host city of the 2016 Olympics, and they paid complements the state capital. But two years from the event, which occurs between 5th and 21st August 2016, the city is now rushing to meet deadlines and to live up to the expectations that have been placed on it.

“For every R$ 1 invested in Olympic facilities, R$ 5 has been applied to projects that will form part of the legacy.

Barcelona forgive me, but no other city will become so much in such a short time as Rio de Janeiro”, said the mayor Eduardo Paes. According to Eduardo, the total investment now stands at R$ 37.6 billion. The key year for COB will be 2015, where we will be able to give a good picture of the international scene and what the Brazilian campaign may entail. Brazil is working to repeat the theory of home advantage. In Olympic history, the host countries have given good qualitative leaps in the medal table due to the investment in training and facilitates. In the previous two editions, China and Great Britain truly shone. The Chinese jumped from 63 podium places (32 golds) in 2004 to 100 (51) in 2008; the British from 47 (19 golds) to 65 (29).

With 560 km of coastline, the state has beautiful beaches and all of them are different from each other. Some are located in busy resorts; others are almost deserted and are only accessible by trails through the Atlantic Forest or by boat.

Surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, stand up paddle and sailing are all in abundance and you will find good waves and perfect wind along the coast, in places like Ibiraquera Lagoon in Imbituba. For the more adventurous among us, the state has some of the best places in Brazil for rafting. Canoeing is also a good on one of the many rivers, lakes and parks in the countryside of the state. >> The Paths of the Canyons attract mainly lovers of ecotourism. The expeditions explore the high mountains that were abruptly cut

by Mother Nature. The impressive canyons are located in the National Park of Aparados da Serra and Serra Geral in the south of the state. But the Paths of the Canyons also have attractions on the coast and in the inner cities.

In total, seven cities make up the region: Sombrio, Praia Grande, Jacinto Machado, Passo de Torres, Balneário Arroio da Silva, Araranguá and Balneário Gaivota. These destinations offer a variety of activities related to ecotourism and adventures like trekking, rappelling, tree walking, zip lining, fishing, boat rides, cascading, mountain biking, cycling and horseback riding tours. It also has a multitude of trails, waterfalls, lakes and other natural places that allow greater contact with its nature and animal/bird watching. The crafts and local culture are also attractions in the region.

centre, where you will notice traces of the Azorean and Portuguese colonisation. Don’t miss as well, a boat ride on the Sombrio Lagoon: the largest freshwater lake in the state, spanning 54 square kilometres. It’s worth a visit as well as Morro da Moça, a 200m high mountain, with vertical walls that resemble the shape of ‘Sugar Loaf Mountain’, in Rio de Janeiro.

Praia Grande Settled in by descendants from the Azores, Portugal and Italy, Praia Grande is an ecotourism destination par excellence. Here Aparados da Serra National Park can be found.

The stunning landscape is characterised by vertical rock faces stretching upwards to 700m in height and then abruptly tail off into the gentle slopes of a plateau. Waterfalls make the scenery even more charming. The protected area is situated on the border between Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, and has three trails open to the public.

Jacinto Machado This is one of the best destinations in Santa Catarina for ecotourism. The city is the main access point to the Fortaleza Canyon, the

region’s largest and also one of the largest in Brazil, at 7.5km in length and up to 1,157 m in height. Century old trails used by drovers, waterfalls, rock pools, rocky rivers and lush vegetation make the ride up the canyon a real adventure, which must be done with accredited guides. Abseiling, canyoning, rafting and trekking are some of the most popular activities here.

Passo de Torres Located on the border with the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Passo de Torres is a very popular resort for surfers. The beaches of Molhes, Rosa do Mar and Bella Torres are the most famous.

Other attractions are boat trips to the Lobos Island, an environmental conservation unit

created to protect wolves and sea lions, and the Macacos Morro, park for the protection of monkeys, located 8 km from the centre.

Balneário Arroio da Silva The 22 km of beaches is the main attraction of Balneário Arroio da Silva. The City organizes most of the sports and recreational activities - especially in the summer – that all take place here. The highlight is the Truck Drag Race (Arrancada de Caminhões), one of the largest events of its kind in the world, attracting up to 100,000 people every year.

The Entremares Fishing Platform, another point of interest for tourists is 5 km from centre, in Meta Beach.

Balneário Gaivota With interconnected beaches, dunes, lagoons, salt marshes and remnants of the Atlantic Forest, Balneário Gaivota is a quiet destination most of the year. In the summer however, tourists come from all over and change the

dynamic of the city. Surfing, fishing and power boating take place along the 23km long coast.

The busy Balneário Gaivota, in the centre, and the quiet Cortada Lagoon, are a must do for walking, swimming and sport fishing.

Araranguá Ecotourism and shopping are the two main attractions of Araranguá, a city colonized by descendants of the Azores, Italy, Germany and some African-Brazilians. The central region of the city has wide avenues and many shops, bars, restaurants and nightclubs.

Going to the coast, the highlights are the beaches, lagoons, dunes, caves and the mouth of the Araranguá River. In several places, nature provides perfect places to go hang gliding, sand boarding and various off-road activities. You can also book horse rides to the Aparados da Serra Park. The main attractions of the town are the dunes of the Morro dos Conventos. They form a slope 30m in height, allowing for descents of up to 35kph.

Free to fly Santa Catarina offers many options for those who like throwing themselves in the air. You can go paragliding, parachuting or trips in a glider. In Balneário Camboriú, at Morro do Careca (Bald Hill), at only 80m high, so you can try it out to see if you like it. Paragliding flights last for about 15 minutes and are available with an experienced pilot (even for children 5 years an up) can be made here. Atalaia Beach has designated spots for free flight in an area owned by the Atalaia Club of Free Flight. Tangará, São Lourenço do Oeste, Gravatal, Garopaba, Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, Florianópolis, Itajaí, Camboriú and Penha are other destinations that also offer ramps for free flights and gliders.

>> Surfing and its variants - windsurfing and kite surfing - are popular in Santa Catarina, attracting legions of fans that have a different lifestyle. In total, the state has 560 km of coastline and around 130 beaches suitable for the sport. It’s hard to single out which is the best beach for surfing due to the amount of options. Among the best known and most popular are Joaquina, Mole, Moçambique, Morro das Pedras and Campeche in Florianópolis; Guarda do Embaú in Palhoça; Vila (the only Latin American beach that will host the World Championship Tour - WCT) and Rosa, in Imbituba; Silveira and Ferrugem, in Garopaba; Prainha, in São Francisco do Sul; Atalaia and Brava, in Itajaí; Estaleiro, in Balneário Camboriú; and Mariscal and Quatro Ilhas, in Bombinhas.

As for other sports, such as windsurfing and kite surfing, the most popular beach is Ibiraquera, especially the Ibiraquera Lagoon in Imbituba. With a backdrop of dunes, rivers, islands and lagoons, Ibiraquera houses a quiet fishing village. The area is very popular for its boutique B&Bs and for its good restaurants, with pink shrimp dishes that are traditionally fished, in the Ibiraquera Lagoon.

The waves of the region are considered one of the best for kite surfing and windsurfing in Brazil. Each year in October, the global elite of both sports gathers on the sands of Ibiraquera for the most awaited competition

Going down rapids in inflatable rubber boats emotes much adrenaline and also puts you amongst nature. Rafting, a sport sought by adrenaline junkies, increasingly affects Ecotourism and Adventure Tourism in the region. Santa Catarina offers a variety of tours, with various levels of difficulty available by accredited companies, including all basic

training and all safety equipment needed.

The ducking (inflatable kayak for two people) and canoeing on rivers and lakes are also a good option for those who want to immerse themselves in the nature of Santa Catarina.

Rafting on the river Itajaí-Açu and its tributaries in the Upper Valley of Itajaí, in the touristic region of European Valley, is considered one of the best in Brazil. It’s a 7.5 km stretch with interspersing rapids, calm passages, waterfalls and spectacular scenery. There are easy routes for beginners and others for the more experienced, which should only be made by veterans of the sport. At the top of the 350m high starting point, you have different routes to choose from.

From the top, the view of the Canyon provides a beautiful sight of the Santa Luzia waterfall, which is 100m high and has several levels, which make it favourable for rappelling and cascading. At the bottom, there are natural pools that were formed by the waterfall.

Trekking, rappelling and a Zip line: adventure sport for all One of the main destinations for trekking and rappelling, Urubici has a wide variety of places, mountains and hills to explore. Thrills await you at Serra do Corvo Branco, which is located 30km from Urubici city centre.

It has stunning scenery that begins in the crevice that cuts two massive rock faces. The road that descends towards Grão Pará is dizzying, dazzling and reveals wild and varied landscapes.

The destination delights tourists, providing activities like trekking, rappelling and other extreme sports.

In Balneário Camboriú, the highlight is the Unipraias Park. It is possible to go tree climbing with canopies up to 130 meters and zip line called the ZipRider, a breakneck descent of 750 metres amidst the Atlantic Forest, where you are suspended by just a cable, sitting in a modern seat that reaches an average speed of 60 km/h and has the pleasure of enjoying the scenery and the feeling of freedom.

It also has suspended walkways for ecological walks through the Atlantic forest. Finally, at 998m, the Castle of the Bugres, in Joinville, has good facilities for climbing. There are two trails that lead to the top, passing through caves, rocky corridors and lookouts, like Pedra do Sofá. At the top, you can see the entire northern part of Santa Catarina and part of Paraná state.

Cycling! Discover a new and beautiful Santa Catarina >> Many natural wonders and thrills await tourists on Santa Catarina’s mountain bike trails. The coast and the countryside of the state have hundreds of places to be explored on a bike, true paradises at the seaside or on the slopes of mountains, canyons, valleys and fields. In most cities, there are tour operators who organize tours and expeditions and rent out bicycles and accessories. Santa Catarina is also a pioneer in Brazilian cycle tourism, consisting of short trips, usually accompanied by guides from specialised companies. The routes connect various cities, passing through trails and secondary roads that are quieter.

The best-known circuit is European Valley, which passes through Timbó (about 30 km from Blumenau), Pomerode, Indaial, Rio dos Cedros, Benedito Novo, Doutor Pedrinho, Rodeio, Apiúna and Ascurra.

The Costa Verde & Mar Circuit gives the chance of exploring one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country, passing by quiet country towns, with preserved forests, rivers and waterfalls. It is the first cycle tourism route in Brazil to cover a coastline. And, when merging stretches of coastline with the interior, it offers great cultural diversity and landscapes. The route goes past prominent and local sights coupled with incomparable scenic beauty. Popular beaches alternate with other deserted ones and are surrounded by green rainforest. Between the beaches, there are challenging hills that also offer gorgeous views. With mostly Azorean Colonization, the coast safeguards strong Portuguese cultural traits, expressed mainly in the festivities and cuisine. In the countryside, the views are littered with rice fields and wooden houses set

the tone of the trip. Other cultural influences, notably German and Italian, can be seen here.

The cycle tour ‘cicloturista’ passes through 11 cities, eight on the coast: Balneário Camboriú, Balneário Piçarras, Bombinhas, Itapema, Itajaí, Navegantes, Penha and Porto Belo and three more in the countryside: Camboriú, Ilhota e Luís Alves. Totalling 270 km, the route uses dirt tracks and urban roads, to avoid busier paved roads. The tour was designed to take six days, to give enough time to enjoy the many attractions that the region has to offer. In each section there are numerous opportunities to enjoy other activities such as hiking, diving, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, micro light flights, among others.

There are also cultural and ecological riches to be explored, such as archaeological sites, historic buildings and trails for bird watching.

Explore and venture >> For the adventurous ones, in the Schroeder region, Vale do Rio Braço do Sul is a place full of springs and streams between the Morro Agudo and Serra Feia. It is here that we find one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the city, the Wasserhoff, as well as the best downhill (a form of radical cycling consisting of riding down a hill as fast as possible along a specified route) course in Latin America.

There is also a cross-country course of 8.3 km that takes you through the woods and there is also a sports complex for championships.

In Rio Negrinho, on the tourist route of Príncipe Paths, there are natural hidden places and farms in the region that have nature trails for trekking, mountain biking, off-roading in a Jeep or ATV. Motocross and kart-cross tracks can be found in Estância Colonial for those seeking other challenges.

In Imbituba, a special route takes cyclists from the Itapirubá Beach to Sonho Beach in Palhoça to watch right whales, which mate in the region between June and November. The route passes by cliffs, dunes and several other beaches in Imbituba and Garopaba. The tour can also start at the Santa Marta Lighthouse, located

in Laguna, and lasts two to four days, with English, Spanish and German speaking guides.

On the other hand, the city of Itajaí offers a mixed destination, where tourists cycle through urban and rural areas, covering eight districts and nine out of the 17 rural communities that are in the area. Winding roads and new friendships complement the landscapes that are enjoyed by those who appreciate the calmness of a bike ride.

Finally, Porto Belo is a great option for offroad mountain bike tours. The site also offers 4x4 tours in cars, passing along rugged beaches, lookouts, trails and other nature conservation sites and there is also the possibility of rides on nights with a full moon. Stops along the route to cool off with a dip and hiking over the nearby hills can also be done. Another option is to explore this scenery riding in groups accompanied by expert guides.

Whale watching Recognized by UNESCO as one of the most beautiful bays in the world, Rosa Beach still looks like an old fishing village, with canoes, carts, artisanal fishing of mullet and rustic lodges, which add charm to the area. Located 22 km from Imbituba city centre and 18 km from Garopaba, Rosa borders the Vermelha Beach, in the north, and Portinho Beach, in the south. The destination was discovered by surfers in the 70’s and today is one of the main points for the sport, especially south of Rosa, in Vila Beach. From August to November you can see the Right whales, which migrate to Rosa Beach to feed their young in their first months of life. The area becomes a kind of natural nursery and attracts many curious people, increasing tourism in the region.

Horse riding in the silence and tradition of Lages >> In Santa Catarina there are lots of opportunities for horse riding, both on the coast and in the countryside. It was in Serra Catarinense that, in the 80s, the first Brazilian farm hotels emerged, paving the way for the development of rural tourism in the entire country. Some of the best rides start at these hotels and some even last up to seven days winding through totally wild fields. Others have shorter itineraries and are highlighted by visits to Coxilha Rural in Lages.

Two long horse rides are famous in the state. The first is the Aparados da Serra Horse Ride, in Araranguá, leaving Bom Jardim da Serra and heading towards Rio Grande do Sul. It happens in July and brings together hundreds of people. The route of almost 300km, includes old paths, passing through cities like São José dos Ausentes,

Cambará do Sul, and some of the most beautiful landscapes of Rio Grande do Sul and the Santa Catarina mountains.

The event lasts for a week and takes place annually in the winter. During the other months of the year, Aparados da Serra offers walks or adventure tours up to three days in duration. The tourists sleep on the farms of the Campos de Cima da Serra.

The second is the Tropeira Horse Ride, that goes from Lages to Tubarão and travels along the historic path of the drovers through Picadão da Serra. The arrival of the riders is just one of the many festivities, celebrating the anniversary of the city, which takes place in May. In Lages, it is very common for regional farm hotels to offer rural tourism that includes horse riding and fishing in lakes and rivers.

The region of Coxilha Rica, where Lages is

located, includes the historic path of Serras Catarinenses, which takes you up and down grassy hills, through forests, river crossings and waterfalls of crystal clear water. There are stops along the route for refreshments, to adjust the saddle, and to reach the next farm for a meal, picnic or to rest. At night, a guitar around a bonfire, the traditional mate drink, fresh milk and delicious typical food, made with fresh local produce, await for you on the last night of the tour.

In European Valley, rural inns offer lake and river fishing, horse riding and trekking in the surroundingareas.Don’tmissthetourthatleaves from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Azambuja, in Brusque, and goes up to the Sanctuary of Saint Paulina, in Nova Trento (35 km). The horse ride attracts about eight thousand riders and takes place in the last weekend of August.
