More than 275 Hosted Buyers, 332 exhibiting companies – up 17 percent on 2011 – from 34 countries and a record number of visitors gather at GIBTM today, with a backdrop of mixed fortunes for destinations across the region in the last 12 months, but a buoyant mood towards improved business opportunities at the show. GIBTM will be both a business forum over the next two-and-a-half days and an industry barometer to gauge the outlook for meetings and events over the next year and beyond, as information is shared and industry leaders impart experiences and best-practice from across the world as part of the education programme. The greatest insight into future outlook will be provided today at 1pm, when the results of the IBTM Middle East Meetings Industry Research are revealed for the first time.

The survey of industry professionals, compiled by Reed Travel Exhibitions’ (RTEs) IBTM team with the assistance of The Right Solution and Dubai-based leading meetings industry publication, meetme, has been conducted online and via email over the last few months, with results coming hot off the presses for today’s seminar. Lois Hall, Exhibition Manager, GIBTM, said the report played a “crucial role”, highlighting “trends, facts and statistics and providing an analysis of the outlook for the year”. “The aim of the report is to develop the industry further, illustrate the enormous potential there is in attracting meetings and events to the region and offer insight on what is to come,” said Hall. As well as providing exhibitors and visitors at IBTM shows with the information they need when making purchasing

Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) has secured a strategic alliance with The Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE), which will significantly boost the educational content across its IBTM global events portfolio. The partnership aligns well with GIBTM’s new business travel focus

for 2012 and will see ACTE lead several seminar sessions over the next few days as part of the show’s robust education programme. “The business and corporate travel community is a vital aspect of the meetings industry and is one of our main priorities across the Reed Travel Exhibitions portfolio,” said Craig Moyes, Portfolio Director, Meetings & Events Portfolio. “Our shows are tailored to the markets they serve and guarantee attendance of top-level decision makers through our Hosted Buyer programmes.” The tie-up with ACTE will deliver “unprecedented and highly sought-after solutions for business travellers attending IBTM shows”, he added. ACTE will deliver a strategic lineup of sessions pertinent to face-to-face meetings in the context of business travel. The education sessions will focus on how industry professionals make the most of face time and developing technologies to best enhance the corporate travel experience.

decisions or pitching for business, the research aims to identify buying trends and major issues affecting destination choice for meeting planners. How the research compares to last year’s results will be under scrutiny. Among the most important findings revealed in the 2011 report was how the pharmaceutical/medical industry had become the largest sector represented by suppliers’ clients – and if the record number of medical congresses held in the UAE over the last year is indicative, it seems likely this will remain the case. Whether Abu Dhabi has been able to hold on to the regional top spot in terms of level of satisfaction with experiences offered will also be revealed. IBTM Global Meetings Industry Research for Asia Pacific, released at AIME in March, has already pinpointed a positive outlook for MENA and the global meetings sector, as did IBTM Global Research pilot test results, revealed at EIBTM in November. Make sure you visit the Seminar Theatre at 1pm to hear the full results.

RESEARCH PREVIEW Buyers have reported an increased budget for 2012, building on an average total spend on Middle East-based events last year of US$1.02 million Source: IBTM Middle East Meetings Industry Research

At GIBTM these sessions include: First step in optimising your busi ness travel spend: Building and implementing a travel policy – Dos and Don'ts (today at 10am); Unravel the mystery of business travel technology distribution costs and how it affects the price you pay (today at 4pm); Improve finance processes and optimise travel payment systems in the Middle Eastern Region (Tuesday at 10am); and Delivering savings in an upbeat Middle Eastern market (Tuesday at 4pm). All the sessions will be moderated by ACTE Executive Director Ron DiLeo. "This collaboration is extremely timely, as business travel and meetings continue to converge. Face-to-face meetings are vital to business success and a healthy economy. Executives must travel to network and push forward initiatives,” he said. “Through this partnership, ACTE is pleased to bring its unique level of knowledge, insight and expertise to Reed Travel Exhibitions, increasing educational deliverables to the meetings industry.”

| welcome |

welcome to gibtm

Dear industry colleagues, Once again I welcome you to the UAE capital for another edition of GIBTM and one during which the destination is able to show you just how much it has changed over the past 12 months. You do not have to venture far from ADNEC to see visible evidence of the amazing developments that have come to fruition over the past year.

The opening of Capital Gate, a record-breaking structure, which truly deserves the description ‘unique,’ is a case in point. This statement building, which houses the five-star Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, is one of a number of architecturally advanced properties that have opened in our capital. It is situated next to an established championship golf course and on the sweeping beach of Saadiyat Island. I hope you have the chance to visit it (and more) during your stay. All these developments bring great incentive and meeting opportunities, as well as our new adventure and sailing products initiated by the private sector, together with our expanding events programme. We, in Abu Dhabi, have set ourselves ambitious targets for the meetings industry and we are buoyed by the success of the World Ophthalmology Congress 2012, which attracted over 12,000 visitors.

Many of the emirate’s stakeholders came together to ensure the congress – the largest convention ever held in Abu Dhabi – ran as smoothly as possible. The event delivered considerable economic returns for the destination and left a legacy of enhanced awareness of Abu Dhabi and of the knowledge that many countries throughout the Middle East are now committing to future excellence in healthcare. By 2015 we want Abu Dhabi to be ranked among the world’s top 100 meetings destinations hosting four times the number of events it currently sees and doubling the number of meetings industry arrivals and yields. Five years later, we want to be among the world’s top 50 meetings destinations, with 10 times the number of events we have now and four times the number of meetings industry visitors. We will do all in our power to attain these targets.

We have come a long way as a meetings destination in a relatively short time, yet we are looking to engage the local, regional and international industry in the development of cutting-edge products that will set it apart. In Abu Dhabi we are keen on partnerships. We believe that we have demonstrated, over the years, our credentials as a solid and reliable partner for the private sector and that this reputation will stand us in good stead as we continue our journey to becoming an acknowledged, world-class convention and meetings destination. I look forward to hearing of new partnerships being struck and existing ones built upon at GIBTM and I wish everyone taking part a very successful meeting.

I am delighted to welcome you to the sixth edition of the largest gathering of the meetings and events industry in the Middle East. This year, GIBTM promises to inspire, motivate and prepare you to tackle your next meeting, event, conference or incentive project with confidence. Our goal is for you to leave GIBTM armed with an extended list of suppliers, an enhanced network and an indepth knowledge of your industry. As with every edition of GIBTM, our event programme is carefully designed to o≠er a true representation of the meetings, events and business travel industry in the Middle East, which has in itself experienced

2

comprehensive yet and is full of brand new and exciting elements. Once again you can attend industry-leading sessions with MPI and ICCA, while for the first time ever ACTE, the global Association of Corporate Travel Executives, will deliver groundbreaking presentations and panel discussions to help you improve your decision making. Embracing Arabic culture is key for the development of GIBTM and we ask you to join Ali Al Saloom of Ask Ali (askali. com) as he presents an inspiring seminar delivered in Arabic on business travel and the age-old concept of the Majlis. If you’d like to know how the industry is shaping up for the future, the 6th IBTM Middle East Meetings Industry Research report will be available on Monday March 26 at 1pm. As a meetings and events professional you will understand the power of networking, reconnecting and building relationships. GIBTM has the pleasure of inviting you to an official welcome reception on Tuesday 27 March at the brand new Rocco Forte Hotel, Abu Dhabi. News in brief learn more in baltimore

QATAR JOINS SHOW DRIVE FOR EVENTS A dedicated Qatar Pavilion has been set-up at GIBTM for the first time with exhibitors from the Gulf State showcasing the growing opportunities and facilities related to the Qatari meetings industry. The move is timely considering Qatar’s events industry has been under the spotlight since the country won the rights to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup last year. Securing such a significant international event has led to a huge investment in tourism infrastructure, while new landmark facilities have already opened their doors. Among them are the stateof-the-art Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), which adds 40,000 square metres of exhibition space and a range of conference, meeting and banqueting areas to the city’s inventory. QNCC will be one of the key exhibitors showcasing their facilities at the Qatar Pavilion at GIBTM. “Two weeks ago, Qatar scooped the award for the

World’s Leading Business Travel Destination at the World Travel Awards," said QNCC Director of Business Development Trevor McCartney. "Furthermore, QNCC, which is built to be one of the most sophisticated convention and exhibition centres in the world, opened its doors on December 4, 2011,” said QNCC Director of Business Development Trevor McCartney. As Qatar realises its vision of moving from a carbon-based wealth to one of the most dynamic knowledge-based economies in the world, QNCC is facilitating this transition by targeting knowledge-based conferences and exhibitions. Joining QNCC at the Qatar Pavilion are Qatar Airways, Doha Marriott Hotel, Mövenpick Towers & Suites Doha, Swiss-Belhotel Doha, Qatar International Tours, Qatar International Adventures, Retaj Hotels & Hospitality, W Doha Hotel & Residences, Qatar MICE Development

Institute, InterContinental Doha The City and Renaissance Doha City Center Hotel. “Qatar is flourishing in the meetings industry. It is savvy and has many authentic options for an incentive group, coupled with state-of-the-art facilities for conferences," said Shane Jameson, Director of Sales and Marketing, Mövenpick Towers & Suites Doha. "The new convention centre is a cut above, combining luxury and ergonomics. Its sheer size is just staggering. The footprints we are making on the world stage are just the beginning, I hope the meetings industry is ready to be dazzled,” he added. Qatar will invest US$20-25 billion in tourism infrastructure by 2022 and the meetings industry is key to plans for diversification, expansion and development. The government has also allocated US$11 billion to build the new international airport and US$5.5 billion for a deep-water seaport. Visit Stand A110

AIBTM is partnering four of the industry’s top associations to provide almost double the amount of educational sessions for the 2012 event. More than 275 Hosted Buyers with high spending power are attending this year’s installment of GIBTM, organiser Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) has said. The firm revealed that 44 percent of Hosted Buyers attending GIBTM 2011 had an annual meetings budget of more than $1

million and it expected a higher percentage of large budget holders to be attending this year. In addition, RTE witnessed a substantial increase in global applications for this year’s Hosted Buyer programme, suggesting it will be the most successful show yet in terms of value of business placed.

Sri Lanka has added two new slogans to its 'Meet in Sri Lanka' campaign. The 'Experience the difference!' and 'Experience value for money!' taglines join the established marketing mantra, which has already succeeded in securing additional meetings for the destination, according the country's Convention Bureau. Meetings business has accounted for 12 percent of Sri Lanka’s total inbound visitor numbers over the past three years. Infrastructure developments are luring more business to Sri Lanka and include the imminent (June) opening of the new convention and exhibition centre in Hambantota in the south of the island. “With capacity to house more than 1,500 delegates and ample exhibition space, the conference business will improve, particularly as a new international airport is under

construction 15 minutes away,” said Kumudu Hennedige, Marketing and Promotions Manager at Convention Bureau. The destination also boasts two conference and exhibition centres in the capital Colombo, while for incentives and group corporate training, Sri Lanka is focussing on its core strengths. Many of the destination's programmes taking place in natural settings and involving traditional practices, such as Ayurveda to “sharpen the mind through meditation”. “Our meeting and incentive industry involves experts who not only handle conferences, but offer creative programmes taking full advantage of the diverse products in the region,” said Hennedige. “Be it hot-air ballooning, a journey on a steam engine, riding on a bullock cart or even an elephant ride, our incentives are carried out with authenticity.” Visit Stand B115

Spending power at GIBTM GIBTM has attracted more buyers from destinations such as China, the UK, US, India and Germany, as well as regional buyers from the Middle East and an estimated 8,000 pre-scheduled appointments are lined up. Research has confirmed that a whopping 98 percent of Hosted Buyers who attended GIBTM 2011 left the show feeling satisfied that the exhibition had met their commercial needs. “If you are looking to source new destinations to place business, or simply would like to understand a destination better, GIBTM lets you do that all in one concise place,” said Hosted Buyer Kip Horton, President, International Division, HPN Global, US.

GIBTM has acknowledged the growing use of technology to enhance the event experience by launching a dedicated GIBTM smartphone application. The free-to-download event application is designed to meet the information and networking needs of show delegates by providing up-tothe-minute event details. Marie-Claire Andrews, CEO of New Zealand-based SmartShow, the parent company of event application specialist ShowGizmo – the firm that developed the GIBTM app – explained: “The app is a mobile event guide offering the latest exhibitor information, delegate profiles, schedule and session details, local information and

the event floorplan. “It includes free lead capture for exhibitors who display the QR code poster we provide, which delegates then scan, automatically updating their phone with that exhibitor's information. In return, the delegate’s name and email is passed to the exhibitor as a lead.” She said visitors could also use the application to search for other delegates or exhibitors and use the in-built meeting scheduler to arrange a get-together. “They can also rate speakers at the education sessions and forward their presentations to contacts,” added Andrews. Show Gizmo is one of the key companies exhibiting within GIBTM’s new Technology

Zone. Here the firm will demonstrate its industryleading iPhone, iPad, Android, MobileWeb and BlackBerry apps for live events. Show delegates can also keep up to date with the latest show news and information by using one of several social media channels provided, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Exhibitors can share their news with other GIBTM followers by tweeting @GIBTMEvent and share their videos, comments and links via GIBTM on Facebook. Plus they can get involved with the discussions on GIBTM’s LinkedIn page. GIBTM delegates can download the GIBTM 'ShowGizmo' app from the three app stores - iTunes, BlackBerry App World and the Android Marketplace. “We are really excited about the show application as it will add value to attendees,” said Lois Hall, Exhibitions Manager, GIBTM. “They will find it to be an incredibly helpful tool that will allow them to plan their time, share information and connect using their phones as well as allow access to up-to-the-minute exhibitor and show information.” Visit Stand G136

FERRARI PROMOTES UNIQUE PLATFORM Making your event stand out from the crowd can be a challenge, but those visitors looking to define their individual brands through unique meeting venues will be pleased to learn that Abu Dhabi provides a wealth of options. One venue that stands out from the crowd is the world’s largest indoor theme park, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. The park is already a popular choice among corporate groups seeking a more creative, high-octane events venue, as the Ferrari brand is well-known around the world. Plus, the brand

appeals to people of all ages. “We offer so much more than the standard meeting experience,” said Raquel Lopez, Director of Marketing & Sales, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. “Ferrari World Abu Dhabi has more than 3,000 square metres of events space and we can customise packages on different scales ranging from the privatisation of individual attractions to creating full-day park privatisation packages. The goal is to create something highly memorable, exciting and unique.” She added: “We have hosted several highly successful events

and corporate product launches that really grabbed headlines last year for their ability to offer brands a unique platform to convey their messages in a fun and exciting way. The MICE arena is very competitive and companies are increasingly looking for ways to differentiate themselves. "Within the MICE industry there is a huge appetite for unusual venues. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi incorporates elements of impressiveness and novelty within a huge range of event space that is inspiring and striking.” Visit Stand D100

Europe casts net in Gulf GIBTM has created a European Pavilion for the first time in the show's history in a bid to accommodate European businesses expanding their business reach into the Gulf. The pavilion will allow destinations and European private-sector companies to use GIBTM as a key platform to cost-effectively showcase their products and services to both the region and the show’s attending decision-makers.

One exhibitor on-board is the Hungarian Convention Bureau, which has pinpointed the Middle East as a new source market for meetings. “We would like to present our wonderful country to the Gulf region because we truly believe that Hungary's offering is competitive,” said the bureau’s Senior Project Manager Dora Kiss. GIBTM organiser Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) said

the European Pavilion will generate strong return on investment for exhibiting partners as they are expected to schedule more than 1,500 appointments with Hosted Buyers over the two-and-a-half days of the show. Other European destinations represented at this year’s GIBTM include Istanbul, Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland and Monaco. Visit the European Pavilion (Stands H110, H111 and H117)

DTCM HIGHLIGHTS MEETINGS AS KEY TO DUBAI TOURISM Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has pinpointed the meetings industry as its key target market for boosting inbound visitors to the emirate. “MICE is the most important tourism market for Dubai. It is the fastest-growing sector in the world and that is why we are participating at all the top meeting industry shows in the world, including GIBTM,” said a DTCM spokesperson. DTCM’s Director of Overseas Promotion and Inward Missions, Saleh Algeziry added: “Dubai is the regional hub for exhibition and conference business and we have been

attracting a large pool of business travellers who visit for meeting and incentive purposes. “The aim of the DTCM participating at GIBTM is so we can take advantage of this business platform where international and regional venues, hotels, destinations and suppliers meet with meeting planners, incentive travel buyers and those involved in the meetings and incentives industry.” Dubai’s meetings infrastructure will be given a further boost this year with the opening of 27 new hotels taking the total tally to 339. Reed Travel Exhibition’s (RTE) IBTM Global Events showcases continue to drive success and support new business despite the fragile worldwide economic climate. The company says its portfolio of events has continued to expand over the last 12 months as clients continue to turn to these international shows to maintain a competitive edge and achieve business objectives. EIBTM broke all records in Barcelona four months ago with more than 15,300 meetings-industry professionals EIBTM

attending over the course of three days. Total visitor and buyer attendance was up 10.3 percent and Hosted Buyer attendance alone increased by nine percent on the previous year. In addition, 64,950 prescheduled appointments were recorded, confirming EIBTM’s success in facilitating valuable business opportunities and strong return on investment. The show floor was also buzzing at the 20th anniversary of Asia-Pacific Incentives & Meetings Expo (AIME) 2012 with 500 Hosted Buyers

attending from 27 countries. This represented a 16.5 percent increase on 2011 figures with half of buyers attending AIME for the first time. Business was at an all-time high with 779 exhibitors participating and pre-audited figures revealed 3,384 visitors attended over the two days. CIBTM is also expected to exceed expectations for 2012 with China’s MICE industry worth an estimated US$150 billion and growing annually by 20 percent (HelmsBriscoe, April 2011). Marriott International has also recently confirmed a

two-year contract with CIBTM, securing its participation for 2012 and 2013, while Argentina and Malaysia have indicated their confidence in the show by substantially increasing their stand size this year. Craig Moyes, Portfolio Director, IBTM Global Events Portfolio, Reed Travel Exhibitions, said: “With some 5,000 suppliers from 100 countries and 17,000 meeting planners, our events portfolio has really moved forward over the past year. “We were also pleased to announce the acquisition of UK show, Business Travel Market, in November last year. This is a great strategic addition to our portfolio and we look forward to adding a business travel element to each of our shows. We are confident that after a great start to 2012, the rest of the year holds great things for our remaining shows.” The next event in the calender is AIBTM, the leading global exhibition for the US meetings and events industry, which will take place in the Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, US from June 19 to 21. SEOUL SUMMIT BOLSTERS IMAGE Missoni GIBTM stalwart Seoul last week welcomed 55 heads of state and international organisations for the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit (March 23 to 24). The event was staged at Seoul’s top convention centre, Coex, which also served as host for the 2010 G-20 Seoul Summit. Seoul Convention Bureau (SCB), a division of the Seoul Tourism Organisation (STO), said the summit showcased Seoul’s meetings infrastructure to the world and bolstered the city’s reputation as the world’s number five convention destination. Seoul’s meetings industry was put to the test during the 2010 G-20 Summit, as more than 20,000 visitors flew into Seoul that week for summit-related business. Since the event, the city has opened more hotels catering to the industry. These include

Hotel Missoni Kuwait

Sheraton Seoul D Cube City Hotel and the Conrad Seoul, which the SCB said put Seoul in a “strong position” to cater to the influx of visitors generated by the Nuclear Security Summit, Seoul will play host to several more large international congresses in 2012, such as the 73rd Skal International

Congress (1,000 participants), the 12th International Congress on Mathematics Education (5,000 participants), the 16th International Congress of Oriental Medicine (16,000 participants) and the 43rd World Intellectual Property Congress (4,000 participants). Visit Stand B120

Learn from competing regions says ICCA

Martin Sirk

Up-and-coming meetings destinations across the Middle East need to learn the tricks of the trade from their more established competitors worldwide, ICCA CEO Martin Sirk has advised. He said it was no longer sufficient to have world-class infrastructure in place in order to win association and congress business and that developing the soft skills of industry personnel was vital.

Kuwait targets growth

“Competition in the international meetings market is increasingly taking place within the context of a ‘flattened world’,” he said. “Almost every destination now has the infrastructure and expertise necessary to be a participant, so these factors are no longer sufficient to be a winner. Today, it’s necessary to have great venues, hotels, air access, PCOs and DMCs, excellent Wi-Fi and other IT skills and experienced personnel just to get onto the shortlist.” Sirk added: “Increasingly, the cutting-edge competition is shifting to the field of intellectual capacity. Destinations that can present their research and development ability, work in partnership with local universities, tie up with their most innovative companies

and create powerful teams combining public and private sectors, are winning a bigger slice of the overall market.” He stressed that for Middle East destinations to compete in this complex market, they needed to understand how more established meetings hubs such as Singapore, Copenhagen, Glasgow and Melbourne operate. Sirk was speaking as he prepared to host an ICCA seminar on day one of GIBTM (Monday March 26, 11.30 to 12.30). Entitled ‘Hosting international association events in the Middle East’, the session will involve a panel of ICCA members including PCOs, convention bureaux and congress centres, plus a major association client, which will cover practical dos and don’ts when organising meetings in the region. Visit Stand J111

Hotel Missoni Kuwait has identified the meetings industry as a primary growth market. Recently-appointed General Manager Alfio Bernardini said more than 50 percent of the top-end designer hotel’s business could be attributed to the meetings industry, due to its popularity for training sessions, meetings, conferences and roadshows and that there was much more scope to boost further sales from this sector. “Demand is coming from the local market initially, mainly from pharmaceutical, petrochemical and training companies and then regionally, from the neighbouring GCC countries,” he revealed. “The growth potential for the meetings sector looks quite high, especially with regards to fullday conferences commanding a high number of participants.” Looking ahead, Bernardini said Hotel Missoni Kuwait would work to establish a

“strong collaboration with the Government sectors, focusing on the increase of meeting requests coming from the ministries and other governmental institutions”. “So far, Kuwait is not a prime location for international companies holding their meetings, but we can see an economic interest and, therefore, growth in this sector,” he said. Meeting facilities at Hotel Missoni Kuwait, which is part of the Rezidor Hotel Group, include a 6,000-square-foot

ballroom featuring bespoke Missoni linens and with the capacity for 550 people. Clients planning large events can hand-pick their fabrics and chairs from 46 pattern combinations, as well as cutlery and crockery. Buffet tables can be personalised with the Korean buffet option, where iPads are installed inside the table to help create a unique atmosphere. The property offers a boardroom that can seat 14 people and a business centre and there are six meeting rooms available for small and medium-sized events, each adorned with Missoni fabrics. Hand-held pads are installed to control curtain, lights and other gadgets in each room. The break-out area features an outdoor terrace as well as a large indoor space incorporating a panini and coffeebreak area. Several laptops and espresso machines are also available. Additionally, Hotel Missoni Kuwait’s meetings and events space has its own private entrance. “Missoni stands for fashion and lifestyle. For bookings of nine Missoni Rooms or more, the 10th room is free, while those booking the Missoni Saloon receive two complimentary Maggiore suites. Delegates also receive a 25 percent discount on meals in the Cucina, Luna or Choco restaurants during their stay, plus a 10 percent discount on any treatment at the hotel’s renowned Six Senses Spa. Hyatt Capital Gate SEEKS ISO FOR GREEN STANCE One of Abu Dhabi’s most recognisable buildings is leading the charge for environmentally sustainable buildings in the country. Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi, which occupies floors 18 to 33 of Capital Gate – a building that measures 160 metres tall and leans westward a staggering 18 degrees – has many ‘green’ features that will further boost its landmark status.

Ashwini Kumar

The upper half of the building was constructed using a doubleglazed façade, contributing to a five percent reduction in heat and, consequently, reduced energy bills and carbon footprint. The special glass, used for the first time in the UAE, minimises the intense summer glare through the use of anti-glare elements in two silver coatings, eliminating the need for thick blinds in the building.

“The unique double façade creates an insulating buffer between the hot air outside and the cool air inside, so cool air is reused inside the room rather than exhausted and replaced with external air,” said Ashwini Kumar, General Manager of Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi. “As well as collaborating with [building owner] ADNEC to ensure the right design and construction materials were used

to facilitate this goal, we are also employing sustainable strategies within the hotel to achieve ISO 14001 certification, which assists us in continually improving our environmental performance.” The 189-room five-star Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi has established ‘Green Team Initiatives’ and hopes to achieve ISO 14001 compliance within the first three months of opening. Dubai takes a regional stand on the industry The Dubai Convention Bureau (DCB) has said GIBTM is a must-attend event as it builds invaluable camaraderie between the Gulf’s major meetings industry players. DCB director Jerad Bachar said: “The show not only provides the DCB with the opportunity to meet with some valuable Hosted Buyers from the region and around the world, but gives us the chance to see our neighbours and build camaraderie with them." “This is supported by several initiatives we have planned this year. For instance, immediately after Abu Dhabi staged the World Ophthalmology Congress in February, we met with the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority's MICE team to compare notes and exchange best-practice ideas.” Bachar added that GIBTM provided a great platform to showcase the region as a congress hub and strengthen

Jerad Bachar

its position on the global stage when when buyers plan their next meetings. The DCB is also taking the opportunity to share its 2012 objectives at GIBTM. These include luring more business from China – a market that represented 24 percent of its business in 2011 after the DCB established offices in Shanghai and Beijing – as well as new regions of the world such as South America. Bachar said the DCB continued to “search high and low” for new business in established source markets such

as Europe and the US and also planned to strengthen its “meetings expertise” at the bureau’s current 18 offices worldwide by appointing dedicated specialists in this arena. “We are also overhauling our collateral to better align with the DTCM’s ‘Definitely Dubai’ campaign and will be producing a business-tourism video for Dubai,” Bachar revealed. The DCB is planning 2012 sales missions in Montreal and Washington DC, as well as preparing to impress management at ICCA, who in the next few months will inspect Dubai’s infrastructure with a view to staging ICCA 2015 in the emirate. More immediately, Dubai will stage the World Congress of Cardiology 2012 from April 18 to 21, expected to attract 15,000 delegates and, in 2013, the emirate will host financial services industry event SIBOS (September 16 to 20). Meetings top Rotana agenda

Omer Kaddouri

Rotana Hotels & Resorts is targeting significant meetings business growth over the next few years, particularly in its core regional markets. The UAE, Egypt and Levant are all regions earmarked for the expansion of the hotel management group’s meetings-related business and participating at GIBTM will help achieve this goal, said Rotana COO Omer Kaddouri. “We have always been very active with the promotion of

our MICE properties all over the Middle East through our local and international sales offices and our participation at GIBTM has assisted us in further developing this sector and in showcasing our products and offerings,” he said. A breakdown of Rotana’s meeting business reveals it contributes to 12 percent of sales at its properties in Abu Dhabi, 15 percent in Dubai, nine percent in Lebanon and 11 percent in Egypt. Kaddouri revealed that despite the negative impact on tourism and meetings business to Egypt caused by political instability, Rotana had high hopes for this country. “We feel security in Cairo is coming back to the streets gradually and it should be noted that Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada were not impacted by disturbances,” he said. “We are, therefore, looking to increase MICE business in Egypt to 21 percent of sales over the next two years.”

Rotana is targeting MICE business in Abu Dhabi to represent 16 percent of sales on the back of Abu Dhabi government initiatives to bring in business to the emirate. “The inventory of hotel rooms to be managed by Rotana in Abu Dhabi will be increased to more than 3,000 within the coming few months. Although we are not really anticipating 'mass tourism' in Abu Dhabi, we hope to appeal to the discerning tourist and MICE organisers and GIBTM will be a huge contributor to this,” said Kaddouri. In neighbouring Dubai, Rotana has more than 100 meeting and conference rooms covering more than 14,000 square metres. “Dubai is now more affordable adding to the attractiveness of the destination, which is encouraging us to further focus on the meetings segment,” Kaddouri explained. Sofitel ready on the starting blocks Sofitel Abu Dhabi

The new Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche is preparing to bombard the meetings industry with value-adds and loyalty schemes in a bid to ensure its conference and events facilities are quickly established as firm favourites. The starting point for this promotional onslaught is GIBTM where the five-star property is talking up its meeting venues and activities, which

include a conference centre spanning almost 2,600 square metres, along with independent access, valet parking and the latest audio-visual technology. A variety of configurations are possible enabling the venue to host between 15 and 1,000 people, together with a wide range of events including weddings, parties, seminars and conferences.

Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche will offer groups tailormade and themed packages in acknowledgement of the growing potential of the meetings industry, which it believes will represent a large share of the hotel’s overall business. “As the meetings market continues to bounce back from the woes of the economic downturn, hotels and other travel specialists, including Sofitel, are using loyalty schemes and applying them to give better deals to meetings bookers,” said Rabih El Hayek, Assistant Director of Sales. “Our aim at GIBTM is to get our offering known to the business-travel sector in the hope we will soon be a famous choice for meetings and events.” Visit Stand D100

Education from industry experts Emirati presenter and industry expert, Ali Al Saloom

This year’s GIBTM education programme features a stellar line-up of speakers and panellists, plus brand new content including corporate-travelfocused seminars and the firstever Arabic-language session. Speakers from the world’s leading industry associations, such as the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE) and Meeting Professionals International (MPI) will lead sessions along with an impressive line-up of senior executives and global authorities from the meetings industry. Sessions will focus on best practices, current and future trends, emerging technology, social media and professional development.

A major highlight at this year’s show will once again be the highly-acclaimed annual IBTM Middle East Meeting Industry Report, undertaken by Reed Travel Exhibitions and meetme magazine, presented by Sally Greenhill, The Right Solution, and Rob Nicholas, meetme. The report will provide an invaluable insight into the regional and global outlook on today’s meetings and events industry and identify future trends. For the first time in the history of the show, GIBTM has partnered with the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE) to launch a series of daily seminars providing discussions focused on the convergence of meetings and travel management. In another show ‘first’, GIBTM will stage the very first Arabic session presented by the respected Ali Al Saloom of ask-ali.com. “This is a very exciting addition to the extensive educational programme at GIBTM that will celebrate and embrace local culture,” said Lois Hall, Exhibitions Manager, GIBTM. “Delegates can discover how the lucrative business opportunities in the region are linked to business tourism with Arabic traditions and culture.” Other leading experts to present at the show include Dr Edith M Szivas, Director of Research and Consultancy at Jumeirah Group, Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management, who will explore the evolution and growth of sustainable tourism

bothglobally and in the Gulf region with a special focus on the meetings industry. Established 'presentologist' at Satellite Visual Communication, John Quinn, will discuss how to create effective and interactive presentations that stand out. Camil El Khoury, Chief Vision Officer of the ideas group, will present a powerful session on how successful leaders grow at the speed of change and how professionals can turn challenges into growth opportunities. A panel discussion featuring speakers: Bicky Carlra, Global President at TraVision and founder of 7Deals Travel, will highlight how increasing accessibility to information through technology is influencing corporate travel procurement strategies and processes; and Lee Mancini, Manager of Dubai-based Sekari, will uncover strategies on how companies of all sizes can take advantage of search engine optimisation to expand their business. “As the largest gathering of meetings and events industry professionals in the Middle East, we must encourage learning and development not only to enhance participants’ development, but so meetings professionals can apply what they learn to grow the industry. Education is one of the show’s core elements to drive the development of the meetings industry forward,” said Hall. For a full run-down of today’s educational programme please see page 16.

More choice for passengers Good news for frequent flyers – booking with Etihad now offers a greater choice when it comes to picking destinations and schedules. This is thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Etihad and China Eastern Airlines to encompass joint route and schedule coordination, codesharing between the UAE and China. In time, the MoU will also cover each other's networks, full frequent flyer reciprocity, reciprocal airport lounge access, joint product development, and technical and cargo cooperation – subject to regulatory approval. The landmark agreement was signed just last week at a meeting in Shanghai between President

and Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways James Hogan and China Eastern Airlines Chairman Liu Shaoyong. Mr Hogan said the MoU was an important development in Etihad Airways’ China strategy. “The partnership with China Eastern Airlines will allow us to extend our reach into the

dynamic Chinese travel market in a commercially viable and mutually beneficial way,’ he said. "We will explore further opportunities to expand the cooperation with China Eastern Airlines and would welcome them operating to and beyond our home base in Abu Dhabi.” Visit Stand B110

Jumeirah's Burj Al Arab and Madinat Jumeirah

Luxury hospitality group Jumeirah is promoting two new innovative meeting and event concepts at this week’s GIBTM. The hotel operator is promising event planners a highlycustomised service through its new ‘MyEvent’ initiative. The concept, which has been rolled out across all Dubai properties within the Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts portfolio, offers a one-hour response time, a full proposal follow-up within 24 hours of the enquiry and a dedicated sales manager. “We launched this initiative to enable us to become closer to our customers and offer a more

personalised service, which is fast and efficient and offers out-of-the-ordinary options across our portfolio,” explained Christian Pertl, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Jumeirah Hotels and Resorts Dubai. Jumeirah is also using GIBTM as a platform to promote its upcoming Jumeirah Creekside Hotel, which will feature another new concept entitled ‘The Academy’. "The Academy will break with all the conventional meeting standards and instead, introduce a new meeting design,” explained Pertl. “We keep reinventing our spaces

in the existing setups, such as turning a former restaurant into an intimate venue for smaller groups, and we continue to add exciting international F&B experiences (such as The Ivy – Dubai) to complement the group meeting and event experience.” He added that for the incentives market, Jumeirah had devised a range of activities that “pay tribute to our heritage, most notably with the launch of the traditional pearl-diving experience in the coming weeks”. GIBTM will see Jumeirah represented on the Dubai and Abu Dhabi stands, while the entire business development team from Burj Al Arab, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Madinat Jumeirah, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, Jumeirah Emirates Towers, Madinat Jumeirah and Jumeirah at Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi, will be pacing the floors to meet with existing and potential clients. “We are also pleased that our global colleagues from the offices in US, Brazil and UK are joining us for GIBTM this year as they are accompanying selected Hosted Buyer groups,” added Pertl. KLCC awarded Halal eventful opening FOOD certification for InterContinental Doha The City The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) says it is confident it can attract more business and meeting planners from the Middle East after being awarded Halal certification from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) for its five kitchens – Chinese, Western, Cold, Pastry and Malay. This conviction is supported by survey findings from www. crescentrating.com – a travel portal for Halal-conscious Muslim travellers – that

ranked Malaysia as the top Halal-friendly holiday destination for 2012 among 10 OIC (Organisation of Islamic Corporation) member states. Recognising the importance of complying with Islamic beliefs, KLCC underwent stringent procedures and detailed analysis related to the Halal process, from the sourcing of ingredients to the preparation and storage of food items. Based on the Malaysian Standards MS1500:2009, its Chinese, Western, Cold, Pastry

and Malay kitchens were certified Halal by JAKIM in 2011. “In addition, the bilateral ties between Malaysia and the Middle East provide significant opportunities to further grow the centre’s Middle East client base, especially in areas such as Islamic banking, Islamic arts and science, the Halal food industry and Islamic education,” said Peter Brokenshire, KLCC General Manager Datuk. The centre’s Halal certification is in line with Malaysia’s endeavour to become the world’s premier Halal hub offering a complete range of products and services. This year it will host the 7th edition of World Halal Forum (April 2 to 3) for the third consecutive year. KLCC generated more than RM657 million (AED 213 million) in economic impact contribution to Kuala Lumpur city and Malaysia from 1,346 events in 2011. Visit Stand A120

cost-effective cruise meetings

Atlantis, The Palm

AtlAntis builds on good results Dubai’s iconic Atlantis, The Palm, is looking to the meetings and events sector as a key growth market for 2012 and beyond. According to the property’s Vice President Group and Event Sales Carl Palmlund, the resort is being pitched as a “destination within a destination”, boasting facilities for large-scale meetings, conferences and conventions. Unique event locations, such as Aquaventure waterpark and the resort’s beaches, experienced “fantastic growth” in the meetings and events sector in 2011 and the venue anticipates similar growth (around 10 to 15 percent) in 2012 and 2013. “We have, therefore, increased our investment in this sector by bringing in some of the best people in the market to join the sales team,” said Palmlund. “We have also increased resources in our regional sales offices to target the meeting and incentive market much more aggressively and are supporting the initiative of Dubai Bid Alliance to work with our destination partners to attract additional and larger meetings and conventions to Dubai.” Atlantis’ impressive 5,600 square metres of multi-faceted convention and banqueting facilities are available with highlights including three ballrooms, 15 private venues, 14 meeting rooms, indoor and outdoor venues plus 18 restaurants, bars and lounges. The dedicated conference space has three separate private entrances, while the resort’s total open-plan space covers some 2,200 square metres. The hotel’s 1.4-kilometre private beach is often used for outdoor events including music concerts, such as Snow Patrol that played at the venue earlier in March.

Atlantis, The Palm’s facilities include one of the biggest meeting spaces in Dubai, the Atlantis Ballroom, with capacity for up to 1,500 people. The resort is also distinctive in its ability to guarantee rooms for up to 600 delegates, due to an inventory that stretches to 1,539 guest rooms. “With facilities to suit small and large groups alike, the world-class Conference Centre offers a venue for incentive groups, meetings, exhibitions, product launches, gala dinners, celebrity events and weddings,” said Palmlund. Atlantis pitches itself as a one-stop shop for the meeting and event planner due to its diverse range of venues suitable for both business and Atlantis, The Palm has 5,600 square metres of convention and banqueting facilities

pleasure, or a combination of both. Due to Dubai’s reputation as a world-class meetings hub, Atlantis has continued to witness growth in its meetings business from established source markets such as Europe and the GCC, as well as relatively new markets for the emirate including the BRIC (Brazil, India and China) countries – particularly on the incentives side – and the USA. Palmlund said he hoped GIBTM would provide Atlantis with the opportunity to meet more quality planners through the Hosted Buyer programmes, as well as “gather information and contacts from leading industry associations including MPI, ICCA and SITE”. Meetings at sea are becoming increasingly popular as corporates and planners look for costeffective solutions under one roof. That’s the message from Royal Caribbean Cruises, which is exhibiting at GIBTM for the second year running, which says promoting cruises as an option for meetings, events and incentives is an “important element” of its business. “Cruises have gradually been recognised by corporate bookers as a new travel option and have been taken as an important form of employee incentive travel, an embodiment of corporate culture, and a way of thanking clients,” explained Lakshmi Durai, Executive Director – Middle East, for Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara Club Cruises. “We are participating at GIBTM again because the interest from the Middle East in holding meetings and incentive events on board cruise ships has grown significantly over the past few years.” Durai said staging a meeting on board a cruise ship “saves time and the hassle of arranging a hotel, meals, activities and entertainment separately, as the cruise provides everything under one roof”. “It is a premium quality product at very affordable

prices,” she continued. “Holding a meeting or conference on board makes perfect economic sense, especially at a time when all organisations have to watch their purse strings.” Durai also noted that Royal Caribbean Cruises boasted “the most innovative ships”. “For instance, the two world’s largest cruise ships, Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas aren’t just ships; they are a collection of amazing experiences that challenge all limitations. “Guests experience an unprecedented variety of one-of-a-kind entertainment performances, culinary concepts, retail venues and technological innovation,” she said. “One of these innovations is the Central Park - a revolutionary design concept whereby the centre of the ship opens to the sky and features lush, tropical Lakshmi Durai

grounds spanning more than the length of a football field. It offers retail, entertainment and dining venues.” In the Middle East, Royal Caribbean will replace Brilliance of the Seas with Serenade of the Seas to operate its Gulf itineraries out of Dubai from 2013. This is a newly refurbished ship with a passenger capacity of 2,500 that can comfortably accommodate upwards of 32 delegates in its conference centre to bigger groups or more than 900 guests in its three-tier theatre. Durai said it also offered one of the highest space-perguest ratios in the industry. She added: “Royal Caribbean ships have state-of-the-art meeting rooms, audio/visual equipment and Wi-Fi connections and we are able to customise facilities for big groups and charters too. Theatres and lounges are also available for corporate events with larger numbers. Conference room and meeting facilities, including a dedicated group co-ordinator, are provided free of charge. “For the ultimate conference and incentive travel, chartering an entire cruise is also an option. A full ship charter gives you the opportunity to customise an incentive or conference programme.” Visit Stand G110

GIBTM KEEPS PACE

Lois Hall, Exhibtion Manager, GIBTM, at Reed Travel Exhibitions explains how this year’s show has incorporated new content to reflect the fast growth of the region’s evolving meetings industry

A

s meetings-industry professionals from around the world gather here in Abu Dhabi's spring sunshine for GIBTM 2012, it is an excellent time to take stock. The latest GIBTM Middle East Industry Research report revealed that the industry benefited from the region’s rapidly-growing economy with an increasing number of events organised over the course of 2011. This year, we expect to see the same positivity reflected on the show floor. Indeed, it is a fabulous time to be in the meetings business. The Middle East meetings, business travel and incentives industry represents a significant part of the region’s economic success and offers substantial contribution to future potential growth. There are a multitude of opportunities that arise from events, meetings, conventions and business tourism. Such events bring together diverse interests and cultures to tackle universal challenges, while simultaneously generating new investment and profiling the destinations that host them. As one of the engines that drive this growth forward, GIBTM is a platform that allows attendees not only to share information, but also helps in building relationships and confidence in ways that can only be accomplished through face-to-face

interaction in the virtual age in which we live. The show has grown and developed since its inception six years ago. We have constantly listened to participant feedback to improve GIBTM’s value proposition each year, through new features and benefits. As our industry quickly expands and evolves, professionals must keep pace by investing their time in updating their industryrelated skills and knowledge base. That is why this year’s GIBTM will host its most comprehensive array of sessions yet. Speakers from leading industry organisations, such as the International Congress & Convention Association (ICCA), the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE) and Meetings Professional International (MPI), alongside global authorities in the meetings industry, will lead educational sessions. These include the show’s first-ever session in Arabic, groundbreaking panel discussions focused on business travel, the exploration of industry trends, emerging technologies, the role of social media, plus personal and professional development. GIBTM continues to grow as the Middle East’s meetings and tourism industries forge ahead with their expansion plans and achieve success upon success. The leisure and business travel market is booming in Saudi

We constantly seek ways to bring the highest standard of buyers and suppliers together to maximise return on investment at GIBTM through our awardwinning Hosted Buyer programme. It is through this successful programme that we stress the importance of networking to build and maintain relationships Arabia, the UAE and Qatar. New hotels are coming onstream and occupancy rates are rising. Royal Jet, the region’s leading luxury jet operator, has just reported a record year in 2011; the World Ophthalmology Conference recently finished its first-ever Middle East and Africa meeting that brought more than 12,000 delegates

Capital Gate

to Abu Dhabi; and the iconic Ducati motorcycle brand chose Yas Marina Circuit for the global media launch of its new Panigale superbike in February. The list goes on. Why is the Gulf so successful in attracting so many world-class events? One could cite traditional Arab hospitality, predictable weather, remarkable infrastructure, the widespread use of English as the common language of global business, a comprehensive range of hospitality options, excellent service, great transport links and its physical location as an international crossroads, as just some of the prime reasons. None of this has happened by accident – well, except maybe the weather and the location! Most of these achievements were strategic, involving significant investment in infrastructure, facilities, training and development. GIBTM plays a pivotal role

in that process, which is why the show’s emphasis this year, apart from the new corporate travel focus, is very much centered on education for attendees. Ali Al Saloom of Ask Ali (ask-ali.com) will speak at length in Arabic about the ways to re-invent the Majlis culture in the context of business tourism in the region. Through our partnership with ACTE, we will further strengthen our focus on business travel this year via a series of seminars held on each day of GIBTM, which hone in on the convergence of meetings and travel management. To discover how the industry is shaping up in the future, attending the highly anticipated 6th Middle East Meetings Industry Research report session is a must for all show delegates. The report will be presented today at 1pm and will unveil this year’s

newest trends and industry outlook. We have also introduced the Technology Zone, an entirely new division of GIBTM dedicated to emerging technology in the industry and the GIBTM mobile app ShowGizmo, a freeto-download smartphone event application designed to meet attendees’ needs by providing access to the latest show information. We have a wide variety of new exhibitors participating this year including Czech Tourism – Czech Convention Bureau, Hungarian Tourism Private Limited Company and India Tourism, among others. We are also proud to welcome returning exhibitors Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Kingdom of Bahrain Ministry of Tourism, Silversea Cruises and many others. We constantly seek ways to bring the highest standard of buyers and suppliers together to maximise return on investment at GIBTM through our awardwinning Hosted Buyer programme. It is through this successful programme that we stress the importance of networking to build and maintain relationships. There will be plenty of opportunities to do so at the Hosted Buyer Welcome Reception at Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi hotel today and at the GIBTM Networking Reception, hosted by the Rocco Forte Hotel Abu Dhabi tomorrow. One of the show’s key aims is to build on the existing success and professionalism of our industry in readiness for the next phase of its expansion and growth. GIBTM showcases the meetings, incentives and business travel capabilities and attractions that the Middle East and the rest of the world can offer to both leading regional and international buyers. It is truly an exciting time to be part of the Gulf region’s meetings industry. I wish you all an enjoyable, informative and productive GIBTM 2012.

CENTRE OF ATTENTION The Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) witnessed a record-breaking year in 2011 and looks set to over-achieve once again in 2012. Here, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Humaid Al Dhaheri reveals some facts, figures and ambitions for the facility ADNEC: the UAE's premier exhibition facility

ADNEC is a facility with plenty to shout about. The UAE capital’s prime convention and exhibition centre celebrated a landmark year in 2011 by staging a record 231 events – a 56 percent increase on the 148 events held in 2010. Key 2011 milestones for ADNEC included a recordbreaking IDEX and the launch of the co-located NAVDEX, attracting 1,060 exhibitors and utilising 124,000 square metres of event space, scooping several industry awards including ‘International Venue of the Year’ at the Association of Event Organisers (AEO) Awards. An additional highlight was the purchase and relaunch of BoxOfficeME.com as part of a renewed focus on ADNEC’s live events business. The milestones don’t end there. ADNEC’s weddings business leapt a massive 200 percent in 2011, compared to 2009 with 88 weddings hosted, plus the centre’s business has been boosted by supporting infrastructure developments. The on-site ADNEC airport check-in facility opened, marking a Middle East first, while Abu Dhabi’s iconic new leaning tower Capital

18

Gate was completed, boasting the 189-room, five-star Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi hotel and 15,000 square metres of office space. ADNEC Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Humaid Al Dhaheri said the centre, which receives around a million visitors annually, has made “great strides” towards its goal of becoming the most successful exhibition, conference and events centre in the region. “And 2012 is set to be another record year,” he said. “In January, we were honoured to welcome the World Future Energy Summit,

which brought together a number of world leaders and high-ranking officials and in February we hosted the capital’s largest event to date – the World Ophthalmology Congress – which brought around 12,000 delegates through ADNEC’s doors. “These factors contribute to what is already set to be an outstanding year for ADNEC, with a similar level of success forecast for the rest of the year.” New developments Recent notable announcements include the launch of the all-new ICC (International

Convention Centre) Abu Dhabi. Unveiled in February, the facility (which re-brands Abu Dhabi Hall) is expected to boost the emirate’s positioning as a destination for largescale international conventions and association events. It also signals ADNEC’s intention to actively target the growing conventions sector, while placing it firmly under the spotlight as the venue of choice for international association conferences. ICC Abu Dhabi has a fully flexible, tiered auditorium seating up to 6,000 people and the 7,920-square-metre adnec: an aerial perspective

space is able to host a range of meetings and events. Two other large conference rooms, 19 smaller break-out rooms, additional exhibition space of 65,080 square metres and catering facilities complement the amenities. Already, the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) and the first IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) General Assembly have been successfully staged there, with more announcements sure to follow. With upcoming events of note including: Routes – the 18th World Route Development Forum (September 29 to October 2); the UFI Annual Congress (November 1); and ADIPEC, the largest oil and gas show outside of North America (November 11 to 14), it’s clear to see how ADNEC is a central force in further enhancing business tourism to Abu Dhabi. “In 2010, of the 1.8 million guests who stayed in Abu Dhabi’s hotels, 11 percent fell into the MICE category,” said Al Dhaheri. “Business tourism has a significant impact on our city’s economy and in 2010 our economic impact was assessed at AED2.3 billion (US$6.26 million). The international MICE industry is worth many billions of dollars and one that we will continue to play a key role in targeting.” Future goals Looking ahead, ADNEC is to significantly expand its events calendar, chasing specific sectors that complement the government’s Abu Dhabi

Economic Vision 2030 – a longterm plan for the transformation of the emirate’s economy. “A prime focus will be industry association meetings and large conferences, which we will target aggressively now that the ICC Abu Dhabi is part of our portfolio,” he explained. “Having the ICC gives organisers the confidence that our venue suits their requirements.” Dhaheri stressed ADNEC’s key goal is to be the “most successful exhibition, conference and event centre in the region”. “Increasing business tourism in Abu Dhabi is obviously of primary focus for us, while raising the emirate’s regional and international profile through hosting major exhibitions and conferences that are in line with the sectors targeted as key to the 2030 vision,” he said. “We aim to create an exciting and diverse calendar of entertainment, cultural and sports events that deliver memorable experiences.” Visit Stand D100

ABU DHABI ON MEETINGS MAP

The UAE capital is on track to reach its goal of becoming one of the world’s top 100 meetings destinations and the region’s leading meetings hub by 2015. Gillian Taylor, Business Tourism Manager at the Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, explains how this will be achieved Gillian Taylor

How did Abu Dhabi’s meetings industry perform in 2011 compared to 2010 in terms of visitor and event numbers? Data related to MICE-industry performance in 2011 is not yet available. However, a report prepared by PKF The Consulting House found that approximately half a million domestic and international business-event visitors arrived in Abu Dhabi in 2010. Around 95,000 of these visitors (19 percent of the total) were international non-UAE-resident businessevent visitors. International business-event visitors spent approximately AED10,000 each per event based on an average five-day event. What key events did the emirate stage in 2011? Advantage Abu Dhabi (AAD) is an initiative aimed at nurturing innovative and viable business events aligned to the Abu Dhabi Government’s Economic Vision 2030. In 2011, we evaluated 35 AAD submissions, all of which we have supported in some way. Calendar highlights generated as a result of this programme included the World Ports and Trade Summit, 2nd Annual CFA Institute Middle East Investment Conference, the Arab Air Carriers Organisation (AACO) 44th AGM, ACI Airport Exchange, World Green Tourism, World Health Congress, Deloitte Annual General Partners meeting and Building Future Education. Other key events staged at ADNEC in 2011 included: • The 4th World Future Energy Summit 2011: A keynote address from Ban Ki-Moon, United Nations Secretary

General, was the highpoint of the event, which attracted more than 26,000 attendees from 112 countries, including world leaders, international policy makers, industry leaders, investors, experts, academia, intellectuals and journalists.

• I RENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) General Assembly: The first-ever meeting. • I DEX 2011: The 10th anniversary edition of International Defence Exhibition & Conference involving 1,060 exhibitors, covering 124,000 square metres and attracting 60,000 visitors. •N AVDEX 2011: The first Naval Defence Exhibition, co-located with IDEX at ADNEC Marina. •A bu Dhabi International Book Fair: Attracting more than 200,000 visitors. •A DIHEX (Abu Dhabi International Hunting & Equestrian Exhibition): More than 100,000 visitors. •E ye on Earth Summit: Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker at the first Eye on Earth Summit attended by 1,400 high-profile delegates. What are the prospects for Abu Dhabi’s meetings industry in 2012? We have started 2012 well, with our largest congress ever, the World Ophthalmology Congress 2012 (WOC), reportedly attracting around 12,000 attendees and 2,158 speakers, 80 percent of whom had never visited Abu Dhabi before. An economic impact forecast by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority suggests WOC 2012’s direct economic benefit to Abu Dhabi is US$21,880,540 (AED80,325,725) with an average delegate spend of US$523

(AED1,920). The legacy of this event has provided us with tremendous capabilities to promote our status as a leading meetings hub. Other 2012 highlights look set to include Routes – the 18th World Route Development Forum (Sept 29 to Oct 2). Hosted by Abu Dhabi Airports Company and supported by Etihad Airways and Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority, the 2012 event is targeted to attract more than 2,750 delegates from more than 80 countries. Looking ahead we have won the bid for World Travel & Tourism Summit 2013, with an anticipated turnout of 1,000 international tourism decision-makers. I would like to point out that Abu Dhabi now has the depth and breadth of hotels offering competitive rates that will certainly help us sell the destination to event organisers. What type of meetings business is Abu Dhabi chasing right now? We are currently bidding on several major conventions associated with the medical and cultural fields – both sectors that are linked to Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 part of the government's Economic Vision 2030. Other target sectors include: energy; petrochemicals; metals; aviation, aerospace and defence; pharmaceuticals, biotech and life sciences; tourism, healthcare and education; transport, trade and logistics; media; financial services; and telecommunications. Our key source markets are predominately the UK, Germany, Italy, France, US, China, Australia and Russia

Classroom-style meeting room: Jumeirah at Etihad Towers

and also anywhere Etihad Airways flies to as we regard their offices as an extension of ours. We are also working hard to get more regional business and focusing on India too. What new meeting-related infrastructure does Abu Dhabi boast that will help lure the crowds? There are many new hotels opening, some with substantial ballrooms that can accommodate 1,000 people. The emirate has a broaderthan-ever inventory of stateof-the-art meetings facilities and a hotel-room stock of 18,500, which is due to expand by a further 5,000 this year. ADNEC has 73,000 square metres of indoor space, plus 60,000 square metres of outdoor space and the facility’s newly unveiled ICC Abu Dhabi has a fully flexible, tiered auditorium seating up to 6,000 people. The 7,920-squaremetre space can host a range of meetings and events. ADNEC’s Capital Centre development will have numerous hotels across all categories, totalling approximately 2,500 rooms. The hotels are either interconnected with, or immediately adjacent to, ADNEC.

The Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal

Hotels already open include Aloft Abu Dhabi (408 rooms), Hyatt Capital Gate Abu Dhabi (189 rooms) and Premier Inn Abu Dhabi Capital Centre (242 rooms). The Centro – Capital Centre (414 rooms) and Capital Centre Rotana (315 rooms) are due to open by Q3 this year. Jumeirah at Etihad Towers and the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi, both recently opened and boast substantial conference space. The former’s Mezzoon Ballroom has capacity for 1,000 and the latter has a 3,000-squaremetre pillar-less ballroom. Other new facilities of note include Manarat Al Saadiyat. This is a 15,400-square-metre venue available for meetings and events. The adjacent UAE Pavilion, designed by Foster + Partners, is a new landmark exhibition and events venue, set to host some of the country’s most important cultural functions. What further meetingsrelated infrastructure is planned of note? Opening in the third quarter of 2012 is the Desert Islands Conference Centre on Sir Bani Yas Island, adjacent to the Desert Island Resort & Spa by Anantara. The Dhabi Ballroom will accommodate various seating arrangements (320 banquet-style; 460 auditorium-style; and 552 for a cocktail function) as well as three meeting rooms that can be divided into six breakout rooms. It will also have: a business centre; state-ofthe art audio-visual equipment; extensive outdoor terraces with shaded and non-shaded external decking; an entrance and reception

lobby; circulation corridors for pre-assembly gatherings; and prayer rooms. Other facilities opening this year include: • Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche: Featuring a 2,600-square-metre conference centre with various configurations accommodating from 15 to 1,000 people. •T he Ritz-Carlton Abu Dhabi, Grand Canal: Featuring 2,040 square metres of flexible space including a 1,500-square-metre ballroom and 11 meeting rooms. •A l Ain Wildlife Park & Resort conference centre: Featuring various function venues. What is the economic impact of Abu Dhabi’s meetings industry and what are the targets over the next five to 10 years? According to a study by KPMG, ADNEC’s economic impact to Abu Dhabi in 2010 was AED2.3 billion. A report prepared by PKF The Consulting House in August 2011 estimated the total economic impact of business events to Abu Dhabi in 2010 at AED2.4 billion, which equates to one percent of Abu Dhabi’s non-oil GDP. The economic impact of business events in Abu Dhabi is expected to increase annually by an average of seven percent between 2010 and 2020, reaching an estimated AED5.1 billion under a best-case scenario by 2020. Abu Dhabi As the capital city of the UAE and the largest of the seven emirates, Abu Dhabi is a varied and diverse proposition for meeting planners. From the beauty of the Arabian Desert to world-class hospitality and leisure attractions, Abu Dhabi has it all. Abu Dhabi is a destination that, as regular GIBTM attendees will testify, changes rapidly. The Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (which combines the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture & Heritage) has been central to the ongoing success of the emirate in attracting visitors

for both business and leisure. In 2011, visitor numbers to Abu Dhabi topped 2.1 million, a considerable increase from 1.8 million in 2010. There was a marked rise in the number of visitors from Russia, China and India, while flag-carrier Etihad Airways helped boost the totals with expanded operations and new destinations. Gillian Taylor, Business Tourism Manager at the authority, says Abu Dhabi has ambitious targets for the meetings industry and it is buoyed by the recent success of the World Ophthalmology Congress 2012. “Attracting more than 12,000 people, many of the emirate’s

stakeholders came together to ensure the congress – the largest convention ever held in Abu Dhabi – went off as smoothly as possible,” said Taylor. “The event delivered considerable economic returns for the destination and left a legacy of enhanced awareness of Abu Dhabi and of the investment many countries throughout the Middle East are now committing to excellence in healthcare.” Abu Dhabi is setting itself clear targets when it comes to visitor arrivals for meetings and events, bolstered by the success of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre (ADNEC) and the opening of several The Volvo Ocean Race makes a two-week stopover in Abu Dhabi

high-profile luxury hotels and resorts across the emirate. By 2015, the authority is aiming to have Abu Dhabi ranked among the world’s top 100 meetings destinations, hosting four times the number of events it currently stages and doubling the number of meetings industry visitor arrivals and yields. Five years after that, the authority wants the emirate to be among the world’s top 50 meetings destinations, with 10 times the number of events it has now and four times the number of meetings-industry visitors. “The destination has much more to offer the industry than a year ago in terms of meeting facilities and options and this is reflected in the number of stakeholders now joining Abu Dhabi’s pavilion at GIBTM,” said Taylor. “This year we have 80 participants sharing a pavilion of 529 square metres – as opposed to 72 participants last year sharing a 500-square-metre stand.” New to the always-impressive Abu Dhabi pavilion are a number of hotels, venues and DMCs. Flash Forum is an exciting, indoor live-entertainment venue on Yas Island that is now available for hire.

Abu Dhabi's Flash Entertainment Yasalam Beats on the Beach

GL Events Middle East operates in three major activity segments, mainly trade shows and convention organisations, venue management and events services. Also exhibiting on the stand is the rebranded Yas Viceroy Hotel Abu Dhabi – the only hotel in the world to straddle a Formula One racetrack. Then there is the new Golf In Abu Dhabi initiative and the recently opened, fivestar Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas. Pipeline projects also showcasing their offerings include: Rosewood Abu Dhabi, which will open this year as one of the first hotels on Sowwah Island; the new Sofitel Abu

Dhabi Corniche, which will be part of the five-building Capital Plaza complex on the eastern tip of Abu Dhabi’s Corniche beachfront; and the soon-to-open The RitzCarlton Abu Dhabi, Grandd Canal, which has a magnificent beach frontage close to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

Qatar Airways Holidays, the airline’s tour operating arm, by offering a variety of short holiday breaks that have been especially packaged and priced for meeting and exhibition participants. Lois Hall, Exhibitions Manager, GIBTM, Reed Travel Exhibitions, said: “For

the first time GIBTM will showcase a dedicated Qatar pavilion where visitors can gain an insight on the country’s recent developments.”

Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority is participating at GIBTM with stand sharers (in addition to those mentioned above) including Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Emirates Palace, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Abu Dhabi and Yas Marina Circuit, plus more. Please visit stand D100.

Qatar The small country of Qatar is regarded as one of the places most likely to make an international impact over the next decade. Having already hosted important regional sporting events, Qatar was thrust into the spotlight when it was awarded the 2022 FIFA World Cup – the first time the prestigious football tournament will be held in the Middle East. However, sport is only one facet of Qatar’s rise. A sanctuary for Islamic arts and culture, the city of Doha offers a rewarding cultural experience. Unlike other destinations in the region, Qatar’s 1.5 million visitors a year primarily arrive on business. The country is rich in oil and gas and has the highest per capita GDP in the world, as well as annual growth rates that are the highest in the world, at around 18 percent. Since winning the rights to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar’s events industry has

20

Qatar will host the 2022 fifa World Cup

been in focus with increased numbers in tourism investment and infrastructure. The country’s meetings and events industry has developed rapidly over the last few years, highlighted with the grand opening of the impressive Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC), which offers total meeting space in excess of 40,000 square metres.

“Qatar is one of the most vibrant economies in the world and is fast becoming a business destination of choice,” says Trevor McCartney, Director Business Development, QNCC, which is exhibiting at GIBTM. “By taking part in GIBTM we aim to educate regional and international meeting planners on the world-class events spaces that Qatar has to offer, in addition to the rich cultural heritage and warm welcome.” The Qatar Pavilion at GIBTM will host a range of exhibitors, including Qatar Airways, Doha Marriott Hotel, Mövenpick Towers & Suites Doha, Swiss-Belhotel Doha, Qatar International Tours, Qatar International Adventures, Retaj Hotels & Hospitality, W Doha Hotel & Residence and the Qatar MICE Development Institute. Qatar will invest US$20-25 billion in tourism infrastructure

by 2022 and the meetings industry is a key element in Qatar’s plans for diversification, expansion and development. The government has allocated US$11 billion for a new international airport and US$5.5 billion towards a deep-water seaport. Work began on the New Doha International Airport (NDIA) in 2004 and is due to be completed this year. Covering an extensive area of 22 square kilometres, the new airport will form the base for Qatar Airways and be able to handle the A380 aircraft. Geared to support a total capacity of 50 million passengers per year, in addition to two million tonnes of cargo, the facility is seen as a cornerstone of Qatar’s development. By 2013, Qatar Airways will fly to more than 120 destinations worldwide. Qatar Airways (named Airline of the Year 2011 by Skytrax) is currently supporting the meetings industry through

Oman The Oman Ministry of Tourism’s current marketing campaign ‘Beauty has an address – Oman’ makes a bold statement, yet few people who have visited the Sultanate would argue. Oman offers a truly unspoilt aspect of Arabia, topped off with modern services and facilities that international visitors would expect. Covering an area of 310,000 square kilometres and home to just 3.3 million people, Oman is larger than Italy, yet has only five percent of its population, so there are vast areas of natural beauty waiting to be discovered. The region is home to

soaring mountains and some of the world’s most spectacular caves, while boasting white sand beaches that are home to nesting turtles and lush, fertile valleys (wadis). The city of Salalah, famous for its frankincense, has its own micro-climate fuelled by the Khareef monsoons. Manmade sights include ancient traditional forts that can be found dotted around the country and modern monuments to culture and the arts, such as the recently opened Muscat Opera House. The Sultanate has worked hard towards achieving harmony

between the past and present. The Ministry of Tourism’s vision is to develop a sustainable tourism sector that ‘reflects the Sultanate’s historic, cultural and natural heritage’ and it seems its efforts are having an effect. This year has started brightly for Oman, which is celebrating the role of its capital city Muscat as the Arab Tourism Capital 2012. A comprehensive programme of events has been established, which began with the Muscat Festival in January. The ministry believes that the country’s natural attractions, coupled with a wide

range of international hotels and improving infrastructure, positions it to offer traditional and warm hospitality to travellers from around the world. Cruise liners have added Muscat to their itineraries, major airport improvements are being completed, luxurious resorts are in place and the new Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) is nearing completion. Set to be completed in 2015, OCEC should put Muscat firmly on the meeting planner’s map. Located just 10 minutes from the new Muscat International Airport, the centre will feature more than 22,000 square metres of exhibition space and an auditorium that will hold up to 3,200 people. The centre will have a twostage opening schedule with the exhibition halls open for business in 2014, followed by meeting rooms, auditorium and banqueting halls in 2015. The centre is being developed by Omran, the company established by the government of Oman to deliver major projects and manage its assets and investments in the tourism sector. “As a responsible citizen, Omran sought to achieve the

Sultanate’s economic diversification vision, to protect the environment and deliver longterm benefits to local communities and the national economy,” said Omran CEO Eng. Wael bin Ahmed Al Lawati. “The centre will generate social economic benefits for the country and will place Oman on the world map by playing host to global and large-scale conferences and events.” The precinct surrounding the new centre will include a five-star hotel, two four-star, and a three-star hotel and apartments with a combined total of 1,000 rooms. A business park and shopping mall, surrounded by a nature reserve, will complete the venue.

Another feather in Seoul’s cap came when it pipped Singapore to the title of Best BT-MICE City in the TTG Travel Awards. Airport capabilities are crucial when it comes to marketing a destination. Incheon International Airport excels, having been ranked Best Airport Worldwide by the Airports Council International for six years running. It is also one of only three airports to have secured a five-star ranking from Skytrax (Hong Kong and Singapore are the other two). Seoul has two large convention centres in COEX and SETEC, with COEX being the most established and largest. COEX is a sprawling complex comprising three five-star hotels, two theatres, Asia’s largest shopping mall and a city airport terminal. COEX hosted the G-20 Summit in 2010. For those seeking an alternative place to meet, there are

riverside venues or even the renowned Floating Island, a complex of three manmade islands on the Han River. Even royal palaces and historical landmarks can be used as backdrops for small- to medium-sized meetings. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Changdeokgung Palace was used as a reception venue for the G-20 Summit. For accommodation, there are 135 hotels in Seoul with a combined total of 25,000 rooms, with a further 15,000 to be added by the end of 2015. More significant conventions are being held in Seoul this year, including hosting 10,000 attendees for the Nuclear Security Summit (March 26 to 27) and the 16th International Congress of Oriental Medicine with 16,000 attendees (September 14 to 16). With Seoul spearheading the Future Convention Cities Initiative and having a

Meeting planners don’t have to wait until 2015 to enjoy the beauty of Oman. The established Oman International Exhibition Centre is located 35 kilometres from Muscat, while luxury resorts such as the Al Bustan Palace, a RitzCarlton Muscat and Shangri-La’s Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa offer excellent facilities. In the capital, the Grand Hyatt Muscat has versatile meetings space, while the boutique Chedi Muscat property offers something more bespoke. South Korea The cutting-edge capital of South Korea, Seoul is a unique city that fuses ancient traditions with a modern metropolis to offer an exciting and rewarding destination for meeting planners. Seoul is a city of contrasts that bond to make an efficient and exciting centre offering outstanding natural beauty (such as the Han River and Nam Mountain) blended with 600 years of history, culture and tradition. Last year the city was named as a UNESCO City of Design and a UNESCO Cultural City. With much to offer, not least a flavour of contemporary Asia, it comes as no surprise that Seoul was ranked fifth in the world for hosting international congresses, according to the Union of International Associations (UIA) and, subsequently, ranked second in Asia. The elevation in rankings is largely down to the marketing

efforts of the city of Seoul and the Seoul Convention Bureau (a division of Seoul Tourism Organization), as well as the addition of new hotels and meeting facilities. “Seoul Convention Bureau is expecting and pursuing more buyers who are interested in Seoul as their next meeting and incentive destination,” explained Stephen Kwak from

Seoul Convention Bureau referring to GIBTM objectives. “We would also like to showcase Seoul’s great meetings industry infrastructure for their events in the future. Seoul is also working on awareness of the city of Seoul in the Middle East market, since we both are very new to each other in terms of business and leisure tourism.”

Jordan

Petra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

This year marks 200 years since the rediscovery of Petra – the jewel in the tourism crown for the Kingdom of Jordan. The city, carved into the red rocks almost 2,000 years ago by the Nabataean people, is a dramatic wonder of the world. Approached through a narrow gorge flanked by 80-metrehigh cliffs, the appearance of this manmade marvel is a

spectacular and unforgettable experience for visitors. Yet Jordan is not a 'one wonder' destination. Apart from the history and culture of places like Petra, Jordan has many natural wonders and unique activities for visitors. The Dead Sea, the desert landscape of Wadi Rum, the coral reefs of Aqaba and a number of nature reserves are all must-see

attractions, which also provide a host of memorable experiences – from desert drives to diving. Visitors can also watch gladiators in battle or ride their own Roman chariots. The anniversary of the discovery of Petra by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt comes at an opportune time for the Jordan Tourism Board (JTB), which is keen to attract more tourists after a difficult 2011 that followed a record-breaking 2010. Tourism is one of the most important sectors of the Kingdom of Jordan’s economy, representing around 13 percent of GDP. This strong industry faced unexpected challenges in 2011, but Jordan’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Nayef Al Fayez has recently laid plans to turn things around. In an interview with The Jordan Times, Al Fayez said it will focus on promoting Jordan as a standalone destination this year to avoid the repercussions of promoting

itself as part of joint packages with neighbouring countries. Jordan used to be part of joint promotions with Syria and Egypt, which resulted in cancellations when these countries suffered unrest. As many long-haul tourists prefer to visit more than one country, Al Fayez said that they might consider marketing Jordan with Turkey or Dubai. Jordan will host several conferences this year to highlight the country as a tourism destination. In June, there will be an international conference in conjunction with the World Tourism Organisation to discuss global challenges. JTB will also host a forum in September for journalists. When it comes to meetings and events, Jordan has an established infrastructure of hotels and purpose-built centres now being added to and improved. New luxury hotels are being built in the capital city of Amman, in Petra, Aqaba and around the popular Dead Sea.

Both the Zara Conference Centre in Amman and the King Hussein Conference Centre at the Dead Sea provide world-class facilities for large events. These are backed by a full range of support facilities. Jordan’s leading hotels have fully-equipped conference and banqueting rooms with dedicated staff. The positive signs are already emerging that 2012 is going to be a good year for Jordan’s tourism sector.

arrivals from 1.64 million over the same period in 2010. The good news for Lebanon is that by targeting higher income visitors, tourism receipts are up. In fact, the average visitor spend in Lebanon is one of the highest in the world, at around US$4,000. “We still managed to see an increase in tourism receipts, because we are emphasising middle-income, rather than lower-income, groups,” said Fady Abboud, Minister of Tourism. Lebanon enjoyed the highest growth rate of arrivals

in the world in 2009, at an incredible 39 percent – partly bolstered by being selected by the New York Times as that year’s 'hot destination'. According to a report by the Byblos Bank Group, Arab tourists accounted for 33 percent of total visitors, followed by Europe at 30 percent, Asia at 16 percent and the Americas at 14 percent. Some of the top attractions are Lebanon’s prized UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Baalbek and Byblos. The Phoenician city of Baalbek, where deities were

worshipped, was known as Heliopolis during the Hellenistic period. It retained its religious function during Roman times, when the sanctuary of the Heliopolitan Jupiter attracted thousands of pilgrims. With its colossal structures, Baalbeck is regarded as one of the finest examples of Imperial Roman architecture. The ruins of many civilisations are found at Byblos, one of the oldest Phoenician cities. Inhabited since Neolithic times, it has been closely linked to the legends and history of the Mediterranean region for thousands of years. When it comes to international meetings and events, Lebanon does not have a purpose-built convention centre, but Beirut has a number of five-star hotels capable of hosting quality events. The Habtoor Grand Hotel Convention Center & Spa offers state-of-the-art business and leisure facilities as well as extensive shopping and entertainment choices. The Emirates Hall at the Habtoor Grand is the largest convention

Lebanon Lebanon is at the crossroads of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, offering archaeological and historical riches, 200 kilometres of coastline and mountains rising above 3,000 metres. The sunny climate and snowy mountains mean Lebanon is able to market year-round tourist activities with its combination of outdoor, leisure, cultural and historical attractions. Lebanon is mentioned in the ancient writings of Homer and in the Old Testament. Its cities were major outposts and seaports in Phoenician and Roman times, just two of the great civilisations that have touched this important destination. After a period of relative stability, the capital city of Beirut seems to be gaining a foothold once again on its hugely important tourism industry – which relies heavily on the city’s renowned nightlife, luxury shopping and historical sights. With a Mediterranean climate, you will often hear it said that in Beirut, you can ski in the morning and sunbathe on the beach in the afternoon.

22

While this is certainly possible – the mountain resorts offering winter sports are just a short drive from the city centre – it is a brave soul that will venure on to the beach during the winter months. Yet this anecdote typifies a dynamic and fascinating city of contrasts. Street signs and café society are as likely to communicate in French as in Arabic. Luxury five-star hotels stand side by side with buildings showing the scars of past troubles. The Ministry of Tourism is trying to shift from its traditional position as a destination for its diaspora into a location for more international tourists. A total of 2.35 million international tourists arrived in 2010, up from 1.14 million in 2005. However, troubles in neighbouring Syria have had an effect on arrivals, especially those over land – which were down 50 percent in the first half of 2011. Lebanon’s international airport, Rafic Hariri International Airport (RHIA), also saw a slight drop in arrivals in the first half of 2011 to 1.61 million

The hall has a seating capacity of 3,500 for conferences and 2,200 for banquets. The Emirates Hall can also be divided into four separate function venues, accommodating 800 guests in each. The Crowne Plaza Beirut in the heart of the Hamra district also hosts events. Sophisticated audio-visual equipment and a dedicated business centre helps planners stage successful events for up to 600 in the ballroom or in one of the nine meeting rooms. The luxurious Phoenicia InterContinental's versatile Grand Ballroom can be divided into four private soundproof sections for smaller events or accommodate up to 2,000 people. Turkey Turkey, a country that bridges Europe and Asia, is embarking on a marketing mission this year. The country will showcase its destinations and leading private-sector companies in Abu Dhabi as part of a marathon promotional push taking in 157 fairs in 63 countries. While Turkey’s leisure tourism market will be the focus of the majority of those exhibitions, the meetings industry infrastructure and incentive offerings will be under the spotlight at GIBTM. A country with a rich cultural tapestry steeped in history, Turkey has a dynamic economy and a population of around 73 million – 99 percent of whom are Muslim. A member of the United Nations and NATO, Turkey is also being considered for membership of the European Union. The cultural and economic centre of Turkey is Istanbul and the city was named the joint European Capital of Culture in 2010 and European Capital of Sports this year. Istanbul

is also bidding to host the Olympic Games in 2020 – further evidence of Turkey’s ambitions to host major events. The Istanbul Convention & Visitors Bureau (ICVB), which is also exhibiting at GIBTM says that the city’s meetings and conventions infrastructure is expanding rapidly, with the opening of the Istanbul Congress Center in 2009 for the IMF World Bank meeting and the Golden Horn Convention and Cultural Centre

hosting some 30,000 people for the World Water Forum. Following the expansion, Istanbul rose 10 places in the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings from 17th to seventh place. The city hosted 109 international congresses in 2010, an increase of 40 percent on 2009 – a marked rise attributed to effective destination marketing and upgraded facilities. Istanbul offers three separate, but compatible, meeting

Istanbul's Golden Horn River

and exhibition clusters in the airport district, (the Conference Valley and the Golden Horn), plus a growing range of meeting facilities on the Asian side of the city to provide planners with greater flexibility. With a total of 70,000 guest rooms, seven purpose-built convention centres and three exhibition centres, Istanbul is well-placed to host large conferences and events, including the recent World AIDS Conference and Rotary International. Location is also a key factor in Istanbul’s success as Europe and the West are increasingly embarking on business ventures with Asia. Flag carrier Turkish Airlines, a member of Star Alliance, flies to more than 170 cities worldwide from Istanbul, which has two airports – one on the Asian side of the city and one on the European side, served by almost 300 airlines. “We are pleased with Istanbul’s 2010 performance and we also see the potential for even better years in the

future,” said ICVB General Manager Elif Balcı Fisunoğlu. “Istanbul is on the shortlist of virtually every major event and that naturally shows up in the results. Now our mission is to continue communicating the message that Istanbul delivers full-spectrum delegate satisfaction. Today, we are focused on solidifying our

Scheduled for completion by 2013, Expo City is being built next to the Bahrain International Circuit northeast of the capital Manama, allowing event organisers to facilitate unique entertainment and leisure options incorporating the Formula One track. The development will include hotels in the three-, four- and five-star categories for a combined capacity of 1,200 rooms. Expo City (expo@bahrain) has the capacity to hold 5,000-plus delegates and up to 30,000 visitors daily,

with the design allowing for potential future expansion to meet growing demand. It is estimated that the economic impact generated by Expo City (expo@ bahrain) will be US$306 million per year. Of the existing conference hotels, Sheraton Bahrain Hotel has a central location in Manama and a function hall capable of hosting up to 800 guests. Bahrain The Bahrain World Trade Centre Twin Towers

The Kingdom of Bahrain is an low-lying archippelago located in the Arabian Gulf off the eastern shore of Saudi Arabia and enjoys a history dating back more than 5,000 years. In 1932, oil was discovered in Bahrain – the first to be found in the Gulf. Fuelled by that oil wealth, modern Bahrain is a developing tapestry of

ancient heritage sites and traditional markets dotted between modern skyscrapers and extensive shopping malls. The eye-catching Bahrain World Trade Center’s twin towers were the first buildings to incorporate wind turbines when completed in 2008, while the Bahrain Financial Harbour towers are the tallest in the country.

Covering an area of just 770 square kilometres, Bahrain is a relatively small nation, ranking 190th in the world in terms of size, but seventh in terms of its population density of 1.2 million people. Bahrain has the largest freemarket economy in the Middle East and is 10th in line globally, according to the 2011 Index of Economic Freedom published by the Heritage Foundation/ Wall Street Journal. Bahrain's meetings industry is beginning to contribute more to the national economy. The Bahrain Exhibition & Convention Authority (BECA) boosted the country’s business-tourism sector significantly, especially through events hosted at the Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre (BIECC). Bahrain has also invested heavily in infrastructure projects, including a new 145,000-square-metre exhibition and convention facility called Expo City (expo@ bahrain). This will represent a tenfold increase in the area available for meetings and conventions in the region.

Cyprus

Cyprus Tourism Organisation at GIBTM 2011

Lying in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is well-placed for visitors from the Middle East, Europe and Africa. Traditionally relying on the leisure visitor (some 2.4 million in 2011), it is also making a name for itself as a destination for business travellers. Known as the island of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, Cyprus has a history dating back 12,000 years. More recently, the country joined the European Union (2004) and adopted the Euro in 2008.

Ideally suited for smaller meetings and events, Cyprus offers a diverse itinerary of history, culture and stunning natural attractions, from unspoiled beaches to the snow-capped peaks of the Troodos mountain range, the highest peak of which is Mount Olympus. The many resorts around the island offer great incentive opportunities. More active visitors can enjoy a mountain hike or a round of golf, while others may want to take

it easy on a luxury yacht or at one of the many speciality spas. Countryside tours are popular and allow guests to see remote mountain villages and vineyards – perfect for sampling the local cuisine. Well-served by all major airlines, the island’s year-round sun and innovative incentives make it a good choice for meeting planners looking for an outdoor-focused event. Vassilis Theocharides, Director of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation of Middle East & Arabian Gulf (CTO), commented that they are again looking forward to telling GIBTM delegates and visitors all about Cyprus and its appeal. “The Cyprus Tourism Organisation has been supporting GIBTM since it was launched,” he said. “It is undoubtedly the most comprehensive meetings industry exhibition in the Middle East. Every year we see increased demand

from our partners to participate, which proves its popularity.” The latest statistics from CTO, which conducts an annual report into the meetings and incentives taking place in Cyprus, showed that the average size of event was 102 participants, with an average duration of four days. A total of 264 conferences were held in 2010 along with 166 incentives.

and international business. Sri Lanka is also the gateway to the Indian and South Asian markets due to its strategic location on the major shipping routes. The capital city Colombo is a friendly and comfortable business city with welcoming inhabitants and offers good value for money for meetings. The bustling metropolis is also the modern commercial hub of

the island, with five-star hotels, shopping malls and restaurants to visit, as well as international fast-food franchises. Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB) is a government department established under the Tourism Act 38 of 2005, for the development of the meetings industry in Sri Lanka, functioning under the Ministry of Economic Development. SLCB is the primary contact point for meeting planners seeking information, advice and expertise when planning and organising events in the country. The bureau works closely with the industry and the national airlines, not only to promote Sri Lanka as a venue for business events, but also to ensure that these events are conducted to the satisfaction of the visitors and delegates. Arrival in Sri Lanka is smooth, with visitors from more than 80 countries eligible for free visas. National carrier SriLankan Airlines flies to 25 countries and 45 cities using a modern Airbus fleet. Sri Lanka offers modern facilities for conferences, exhibitions and events with purpose-built centres and conference hotels equipped with the latest technology.

By far the most popular city destination for conferences and incentives was Limassol (46 percent), which attracted 20,476 participants. Visitors from mainland Europe made up 60 percent of participants, with 26 percent coming from Cyprus itself. Concentrating on venues, most events are held within the island’s diverse range of international and homegrown hotels. The Cyprus

Paphos Harbour

State Fairs Authority Multiple Use Complex is located in Nicosia and can accommodate 800 people in theatrestyle or 600 for a banquet, making it one of the largest options on the island. The venue is equipped with the latest audio-visual technology, meeting rooms, translating services and exhibition areas and there is full technical support provided by on-site staff. There are two international airports in Cyprus (Larnaca and Paphos) and Cyprus Airways flies to 20 short-haul destinations. The burgeoning business travel sector has been declared a major focus at this year’s GIBTM. meetme asks show organiser Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) and the region’s major corporate travel players to discuss the challenges and opportunities for the industry in 2012 and beyond

The very foundations of the GCC’s travel industry are built on the corporate travel sector. The sector is still by far the highest revenue generator compared to meetings and leisure travel (relative fledgling industries in the region) yet, to date, no trade show organiser has successfully, or rather consistently, produced an event that caters to this lucrative market. With a gap for a show catering to the needs of the business travel community, it is no surprise that Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) has taken the bull by the horns and declared its intention to make corporate travel a centerpiece at this year’s Gulf Incentive, Business Travel and Meetings Exhibition (GIBTM), which takes place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from March 26-28. “The business and corporate travel community is an intrinsic part of the meetings industry and has been expanding steadily, so this year we are making business travel a key focus at GIBTM,” explains the show’s new exhibition manager Lois Hall. “With the UAE witnessing a five percent increase in air traffic this year and recording the largest number of hotel rooms underway in the Middle East and Africa region, we expect to see even greater growth in the business travel sector.” She adds that business travel has “always been a part of GIBTM. However, with business becoming increasingly global, meetings and events held by corporate companies in the GCC and globally are often organised in other parts of the world, fueling the business travel industry”.
