ast week, you might have seen Mark Ballard running around town with a film crew right behind him. “The Artist” crashed the town of Macon in a style that only he can pull off. One particular day, Mark called and asked me to meet him at Waterworks Park, where I would go head to head with him in a Bouquet making contest. I’d been after Ballard for a while, wanting him to do sort of a competition, where I’d learn how to do things he knows how to do well, and he could learn things that I know how to do well. (Mark being an animal rights activist, Hog Hunting got taken off the list). Anyway, it was a bunch of fun, and it reminded me why I love this town and its many characters. You can guess whose bouquet was the most “beautiful of the lot” but if they sell this show, and it gets on air, you might be in for a surprise.

As I’m sure you downtowners have noticed we’ve got tons of new stuff happening down here. The Rookery has been washed down, revamped and painted and looks like the long standing staple that it is. The food is wonderful, service is great, and live music is back. Long-time Downtown go-getter Cesare Mammerella opened his two new businesses, Dolce Vita and Jack and Coat. Both look stylish, as is always the case with Cesare and have been the rave all over town. A new smoothie shop is also set to open on the corner of Third and Cherry, and Bottoms Up, a new bar catering to the college crowd will be opening it’s door soon as well. I’ve always said that what downtown needed was for a lot of things to happen at once, and here we are. Let’s get out and support them all as much as we can as we jumpstart the heart of our city.

Columnist Karen Rogers: For over fifteen years Karen Jones has been a military spouse and a stay-at-home mother of two. Last year, she began writing after a suggestion from a professor at Macon State College.This has evolved into a “second career” and love outside of her domestic dalliances.

Columnist Debra McCorkle began writing liberal commentary when she turned forty, the same year that George W. Bush was first elected president. She has spent the last decade in respectful disagreement with various aspects of the government as well as pondering the rapidly shifting social climate. McCorkle has written for The 11th Hour for the past six years. Her work has also appeared in The San Francisco Chronicle, Hip Mama, and on Georgia Public Radio. ediatrician Dannette Kallay wanted to treat children without using her prescription pad so she stepped outside her office to offer Middle Georgia kids and adults an alternative: YOGA. After six months of building restoration, Yoga Moga opened its doors on Second Street in downtown Macon on September 14th. “Our mission is to take the intimidation out of yoga,” Kallay said. “We want everyone to be comfortable with yoga—not to worry about their appearance or whether they can sit in a lotus position.” Although her initial goal was to provide yoga for children, she soon realized that adults needed the stress reliever just as much as their children. Yoga Moga offers beginner and advanced classes. Yoga students attend the group that fits the individual’s needs and also fits into his schedule. Three certified yoga instructors teach various adult classes. Instructor Missy Maloy teaches adult classes for all levels but says she leaves the specialized classes to “the doctor.” Kallay conducts classes for children and adults with special needs. Children’s classes are divided according to age. Toddlers attend with a parent, kids (3-4 years old and 5-8 years old) attend sessions that include animated role play where they take imaginary trips to different places all the while incorporating various yoga poses and breathing regimens. While Kallay enjoys teaching students of all ages, she finds teaching 8-12 year old kids most enjoyable. “They are so honest and open,” she said. “They are eager to learn, willing to experiment and they are well-behaved.” She uses guided visualization to transport these students through different adventures. “Through meditation, these students are able to remove their minds from daily stressors and after meditation they get to share their individual adventure with the class.” Understanding the importance of providing yoga for all ages, Kallay offers several opportunities for family participation. “Children make it easier to get adults to join,” she said. “Adults need to get in touch with their inner child.” Yoga Moga offers family sessions on Saturdays, Mom and baby sessions on Thursdays and Prenatal Yoga twice a week. “Prenatal Yoga helps to alleviate the aches and pains of pregnancy,” Kallay said. The session offers hip opening exercises and helps prepare the mother for childbirth. It is recommended that prenatal sessions begin at the end of the first trimester and can continue until delivery. And after the baby arrives, Kallay suggests new mothers attend the Mom and baby sessions to help with the bonding process. “This session provides gentle postpartum exercises that incorporate the baby. There is even a time for infant massage,” she said.

Cocaine Trafficking Arrest

Approximately 41 grams of crack cocaine (street value$5,125) and $980 cash was seized from a vehicle at a traffic stop on Broadway near Flamingo Avenue on September 22. The Bibb County Narcotics and Vice Unit arrested 32-year-old Timothy Dewayne Ross of Macon. Ross is currently being held at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center for Cocaine Trafficking and Superior Court Probation Violation.

Macon City Forester

T

he farcical firing of Macon’s city forester in Spring 2008 belongs in our city’s hall of shame. It would span a couple 11th Hour columns to chronicle that saga. Suffice it to say Peter Ranalet was our sixth forester in some 19 years. Averaged out, that’s 3.2 years apiece. Ranalet’s predecessor Forester Michael Huffman stated in a Telegraph letter, “Peter’s termination is a result of the same bureaucracy that resulted in my resignation. The huge turnover in this position throughout the years indicates a problem.” When Parks & Rec brought its proposed 2010 budget to Appropriations for approval, I imagine their fingers were crossed that we would overlook a little tweak on their organizational chart. The city forester position was eliminated. We noticed it and ensured it remained intact (though vacant due to budget constraints). The city forester duties are delineated in Section 14-30 of our ordinances, and they are significant. Here’s the irony. Macon, along with other members of the Middle Georgia Clean Air Coalition, just funded The Clark Group to the tune of $90,000 for the remainder of this fiscal year to help keep us

out of EPA non-attainment status. They are an environmental lobbyist firm in Washington, DC. With their impressive portfolio of clients, I can’t imagine we’ll get the bang for our buck that a full time city forester would give this issue. Our former forester made less than half that in salary. And the work of an urban forester results in reduced unhealthful ozone days, reduced smog, reduced parking lot emissions and the removal of pollution from the atmosphere. Non-attainment would mean no new missions come to RAFB, and we all know how vital the base is to our local economy. The Ocmulgee Heritage Trail, the College Hill Corridor, the Macon-Bibb Road Improvements Project, the levee – these are among other vital community resources that also beg for the sustained expertise of a city forester. Forestry is a profession in its own right. Macon unfortunately has always buried the city forester under three layers of unnecessary non-urban forestry supervision in Parks and Rec. One of those layers includes a manager who is a certified horticulturist. Perhaps there is a little professional rivalry there, I don’t know.

Regardless, Parks and Rec is primarily responsible for some 1400 acres of parks and squares, ball fields, sporting events, fountains, etc. while the city spans some 38,000 acres. That’s 38,000 acres of neighborhoods, shops, businesses, churches, schools, hospitals, museums, nightclubs, parking lots, roads, rights of way, and the list goes on. The city forester position will never succeed within Parks and Rec. That’s established in the annals of history. The forester position could be postured for success within Public Works, which is a citywide operation. (It should report to the Director and not be buried under three layers of superfluous management.) Public Works has a heavy equipment inventory, and their crews are routinely on city streets and roads where they identify dead and fallen trees. This placement is supported by Forester Walker Rivers who wrote to The Telegraph following Ranalet’s bungled termination: “Columbus is a city of similar size and characteristics to Macon that happens to eat our lunch on a regular basis. It faced this same dilemma a few years ago and sought to correct the program by removing its forestry division from Parks and Recreation and putting it where it belonged, in Public Works. They now have a nationally recognized urban forestry program that has helped catapult that city squarely into the top tier of Georgia cities. Quality of life is often as or more important to new industries looking to locate

in Georgia cities and an aggressive and effective (urban) forestry program certainly enhances a city’s quality of life. Why can’t the citizens of Macon get that kind of return on their hard earned tax dollars? Is departmental turf more important than effective government services?” Good question, Forester Rivers. A vibrant urban forestry program does far more than beautify our open spaces. It is very complex. Foresters are educated to view trees collectively and to manage them as an ecosystem. They are trained to take biological, social and economic conditions into consideration to help us as taxpayers make wise and careful tree investments. At the end of the day, we reap the benefits. Trees increase property values. Trees reduce noise. Trees reduce groundwater runoff. Trees reduce erosion. Trees reduce energy bills. Trees provide nesting places and berries for birds. Trees reduce smog and pollution. Trees moderate our sizzling hot Macon climate. Trees improve road safety. Peter Ranalet died unexpectedly August 19th. His widow wrote council members recently. She thanked those who believed in Peter and supported his vision for Macon. She thought his heart was broken by his treatment at Parks and Rec. Macon can learn from its past, make atonement and “catapult (us) squarely into the top tier of Georgia cities” by restructuring and funding the city forester position.

Screening of “American Violet” Sunday, October 11 ased on a true story, “American Violet” is a story about a freedom-fighter who stands up for her rights. Newcomer Nicole Beharie plays Dee Roberts, a Texas mother of four who is wrongly arrested in a drug raid. She is offered a plea deal but refuses, knowing she is innocent. This sets in motion a high-stakes gambit involving the ACLU, a local church leader, the police and the local DA's office. The film is intrinsically tied to the tiny hamlet of Hearne, Texas, where drug raids are conducted annually, particularly in the town’s public housing community. Beyond the extraordinary story about one woman’s fight against injustice, the film examines the experience of a single black mother as well. "American Violet" has tense drama, fine performances, and heady subject matter, but Beharie’s performance stands out, noted Chicago SunTimes reviewer Roger Ebert.. Amber will be coming home to Macon on October 3 to present an acting seminar for aspiring young artists, who like herself, loved to be the center of attention, performing endless renditions of the latest movie and pop stars. Screening at 8 p.m. $5.

Madison Named Executive Director for the College Hill Alliance Patrick Madison has been named executive director for the College Hill Alliance, effective Oct. 1. Madison is co-founder of Madison-Poss & Associates, a Macon-based regional planning and development consulting firm whose projects include College Hill Commons, home to Joshua Cup Coffee, and the Palisades, the Intown Macon condominium complex. Madison is a certified planner through the American Institute of Certified Planners and is a Registered Environmental Professional with the National Registry of Environmental Professionals. Madison served as chairman of Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission from 1989 to 1992. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Geography from Indiana State University with concentrations in land use planning, site selection and geographic information systems. Madison’s 35-plus-year career in urban development includes mediation in construction, public issue, environmental assessments and real estate consulting, development and construction of historic renovation, multifamily and commercial projects. “I’m looking forward to working with the residents, businesses and institutions of the College Hill Corridor as they continue their efforts to make their collective vision for the Intown and surrounding neighborhoods of Macon a reality,” Madison said. “As a planner, I admire their efforts to bring clarity, consensus and direction to that vision through a two-year process of public input and reflection culminating in the College Hill Corridor Master Plan.” The executive director is the second hire of the three staff positions for the newly formed College Hill Alliance, which is funded by a grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. A third position will be filled by the end of October. The Knight Foundation committed $2 million to Mercer to fund the College Hill Alliance for three years and $3 million to the Community Foundation of Central Georgia to fund residents’ best ideas for transforming the neighborhoods along the College Hill Corridor. The College Hill Alliance will focus on accelerating neighborhood revitalization. Specifically, the alliance will implement the master plan that will beautify the area, create a business case to attract private investment to College Hill and seek additional funding for the neighborhood.

That was a blog post from Macon native turned LA rising superstar Meiko. She writes, “I'm really excited about this one! I've been a fan of hers for a while now, and I'm SO excited to open for her!” Currently on tour with the folksy-popstar in Europe, upcoming shows worth the road trip include a gig at the Knight Theatre in Charlotte, NC on October 28 and the Performing Arts Center in Birmingham on October 30th. Dedicated fans may want to make the drive to Miami Beach for a show at the Fillmore on November 3. From a Conan latenight performace to praises from online gossip diva Perez Hilton (“If you like singer/songwriters then you will be foaming at the mouth for Meiko”) this hometown girl is making it in the music industry.

Wilco The Album Released: July 7, 2009

Since its debut album "A.M.",Wilco has gone through a lot of ups and downs commercially, even though the band has enjoyed ever-climbing critical success, perhaps none more so than with the longdelayed (because of label problems) 2002 "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" album, in my book stil the finest album of the band.Yet always throughout you got the sense that Jeff Tweedy, the band's singer-song writer, was trying to prove something.With the band's reputation clearly established, now comes the 7th studio album, 2 years after the slightly disappointing (if ambitious) "Sky Blue Sky" album. Chant Music for the Soul I purchased this album on the the strength of an article in the New York Times in late June/early July about the monastery and the recording of some of their daily chant that they had agreed to do. Clearly, the article was persuasive.This the most supple, sublime performance of Gregorian chant I have ever heard. I am not Catholic, but rather a Lutheran, while at the same time being a of student of yoga.This recording speaks to the need to die to oneself in the praise of the Divine as recommended in Protestant Christian, Buddhist, and Hindu traditions.

Morton spent the spring and summer of 2006 touring the Southeast in support of the record with his backing band, The Wholly Ghosts, a rollicking, folksy band which is fun as hell to listen too. In March of 2007, Ken Will performed two showcases at the annual South-BySouthwest convention in Austin, TX. Later that spring, he was nominated for “Best Solo Performer in Athens” by The Flagpole Magazine. He’ll be performing his one man show at the 567, Macon’s perfect listening room.

The Notion @ El Azeca

Country outlaw David Allan Coe at Whiskey River on Friday, October 9

Born in Ohio, David Allan Coe was in and out of reform schools, correction centers and prisons since the age of 9. One of the most fascinating -- and, some would say, dangerous -- figures in the entire history of country music, Coe's unrestrained ego is evident throughout his work. After all, he was not shy in listing himself alongside two undisputed icons when he wrote and recorded the 1976 single, "Willie, Waylon and Me." While some of the circumstances of Coe's outlaw life are easily substantiated, it's often impossible to unravel all of the stories that have led to his larger myth. According to his publicity campaigns, he spent time on Death Row for killing a fellow inmate who demanded oral sex. After receiving a conflicting account from prison officials, a Rolling Stone reporter questioned Coe about the alleged murder. His musical response was the song, "I'd Like to Kick the Shit Out of You." Needless to say, Coe can still put on a show!

Mike "The Hat" Douglas, age 51, passed away on August 21, 2009. He made many a friends driving that yellow cab and now we will all get the chance to honor his life with a rocking show at 20’s Pub. What do you enjoy about the Macon's scene?

When the chicks get liquored up and fall into the band, or someone starts a brawl. But unfortunately, that only happens every once in a while. What we enjoy is the people of Macon. They are what it's all about. It's great when they know all the words and sing along, and better yet, get up and dance.

Since I've been here, I haven't seen a solid retro cover band in our midst since Two Finger Jester Busted on the scene, and we've personally been missing it. I know, original experimental bands are just all the rage these days, but the fact is, some folks still like to have fun. So we sat down with our newest cover/dance band on the scene to see what's what.

Why do you play music?

For the spiritual connection we get between God and the audience, but mostly for the chicks. Laura asserts this does not apply to her, however, it's always good to have a lucrative career to fall back on. Seriously, though, we play because we love music. It gets in your blood and it becomes almost like an addiction. Even if you give it up, you still crave it once in a while. Kind of like cigarettes... 80's music was unique and fun, and when we play it, it takes us back to a time when we were young and didn't have a care in the world. It's all about having a good time, and we want

What's not to like? Well, there is one thing... We wish there were venues to play where people can just come out and enjoy music on a more regular basis, not just at Cherry Blossom festival or the fair. It would be nice to have outdoor shows, during the afternoon or early evening, so folks can bring their kids, a picnic lunch, drink a beer... you know, just relax, watch a show and listen to some great music. But it's just a dream...

Where are some of the place you think you'd fit to play?

We would fit in anywhere there are people who love 80s music and want to party. We may not go over so well at a bike fest, but who knows? Come to think of it, a lot of bikers do like our music.

Newly Updated Rookery Serves up Great Food with a side of Live Music

ight years ago, when I moved here, and even long before that, The Rookery was the place to be for lunch. Hardly a day went by when an afternoon wasn’t somehow spent inside those doors, eating some good food, drinking some good spirits, and just enjoying Downtown Macon with my friends. One thing that set it apart back then was that kids were allowed in the place, meaning it was family friendly. It was not the only place Downtown that was such, but certainly one of the most reasonably priced, eclectic menus that allowed you and your entire family in for the full experience. State Law changed all that when they made all restaurants non-smoking a few years ago, and the Rookery Management decided that they would remain a smoking establishment, meaning kids couldn’t enter. I’m not slamming them for this, but for the past several years, those same families that hung out with me years ago there, just plain stopped going downtown. Three of my great friends, Wes and Betsy Griffith, and Chad Evans have changed all that, and have brought the Rookery back to its former glory, not only aesthetically, but also with the taste of their menu. As you’ve probably noticed, gone is the bright blue and white that adorned the Rookery for the past few years, in favor of a masterpiece only Tony Long could create. It’s back to original brick, it’s interior paint reminicent of an old English pub that’s been there since the seventies (which it has), and the inside is both clean, and has personality for the first time in a long time. The new owners gave the menu some

personality too, something that has escaped most of our local restaurants, by capitalizing on our music history. There is a Walden Greenback Burger, topped with fried green tomatoes, a Jerry Reed “when you’re hot, you’re hot” burger, with sour cream and jalapenos, the Johnny Jenkins Burger, topped with their homemade pimento cheese, and of course, The Allman Brothers Burger, topped with fresh, sauteed mushrooms. Burgers aren’t the only thing that is on the menu of course, appetizers range from nachos (pictures left) to Spinach dip with Artichokes, a variety of great salads, like a Montreal Steak Salad and the Tutti Frutti Salad, reminiscent of that famous Bert’s house salad I used to love. There are fried mushrooms (three times the size of the former ones) and Chad Evans’ Famous Chicken Salad that you might remember from White Lightning is there, as is a variety of other sandwiches like The Reuben, the Club, The Jessica (a scramble dog), a buffalo chicken sandwich, and a great grilled pimento cheese and Bacon sandwich that I think I could live off of. On top of all that, The Rookery is slated to bring back live music, though I expect they’ll eventually be sticking to laid back shows, their last Sunday Night Jam featured three balls to the wall bands, Abby Owens, Hank Vegas and Soulshine, and it was packed to the gills with the old and young alike. erhaps the president is correct in stating that racism is not the primary concern regarding the increasingly histrionic response of the conservative opposition to his health care reform efforts. However, I still believe that there is a strong correlation between racism and the level of disrespect currently being hurled toward the White House. We are hardly living in a post-racial society. Here in the Deep South, I could spout off considerable anecdotal evidence of racism often expressed by more conservative friends and family. I have grown so used to it that I do not consider it unusual to hear racial epithets and not-so-funny little stories about blacks, Latinos, people of Middle Eastern descent, and occasionally Jews. I can and do object, only to have folks look at me as if I am an uptight liberal feminazi. But I doubt that it is so different anywhere, because the south certainly did not invent racism. One thing that has interested me regarding the tea party protests is that the flames are being stirred by a number of conservative leaders who have a few bigoted skeletons in (and out of) their closets. Rush Limbaugh's 18 & Over words are practically a children's treasury of Klan-level quotations: • (To a black caller) Take that bone out of your nose and call me back. • Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson? • The NAACP should... get a liquor store and practice robberies. Tea Party Express organizer Mark Williams referred to Obama as an “Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug”. + Happy hour all long FRI 29: ETHAN &night EWOKS Bill O'Reilly has called Mexican immigrants “wetbacks” and Ann Coulter has referred to Arabs as “camel riding nomads”. During a fundraiser, O'Reilly joked that a black singing group had better not be “in the parking lot stealing our hubPoker 7:30, Trivia 9p.m. caps”. If it walks like a duck.... But there is no one more influential in Tea Party protests than commentator Glenn Beck. Beck generally creeps me out, from his reference to hating 9/11 victims' families to calling survivors “scumbags”. If with Matt Katrina Moncrief & Friends,10p Beck's 9/12 Project has a backing theology, it comes straight from the words of Mormon wingnut Cleon Skousen. Beck has made this obscure educator and largely discredited John Birch Society speaker a bestselling author. His book 8pm The 5,000 Year Leap Specials - close! (1981) is a hit with the Birther set.

Was Skousen a racist? In his 1982 history textbook The Making of America, he referred to black children as “pickaninnies” and suggested that "[slave] gangs in transit were usually a cheerful lot, though the presence of a number of the more vicious type sometimes made it necessary for them all to go in chains”. If it quacks like a duck.... Cleon Skousen promoted an anti-communist, xenophobic agenda. He went so far as to align himself with John Birch member Robert Welch's claim that former President Eisenhower was an agent of Communism. The FBI and even most conservative groups distance themselves from Skousen for his extremist views. Until Glenn Beck began promoting The 5,000 Year Leap as a “divinely inspired” mustread, Skousen was known primarily to the white male survivalist set (his nephew Joel Skousen is a leader in the movement). Reading a little Skousen certainly helps illuminate why the teabaggers seem so darned obsessed with McCarthy-era rhetoric about socialism. When I looked at Tea Party photographs, there were so many Marxist references that the scene seems entirely from a Lost Era. There's no more Soviet Union, and I can't think of a country even attempting to be Communist any more. A child wearing a shirt that stated “The Cure for Obama Communism is a New Era of McCarthyism” gave me chills (really?? really, do you conservatives want a nation run by severely alcoholic, delusionally paranoid nutball who revelled in ruining lives and equated political dissent with communism?). Almost all that I see and hear from the far right is rhetoric quoted from racists, both living and dead. Virtually everyone involved is white, and every one of them want their Medicare and VA hospitals for themselves, which anyone with a pulse should understand is socialized medicine. Teabaggers aren't afraid of taxes as long as they pay for their own health care and their own wars and the highways that they use. But they want the poor and the nonwhite excluded – and they offer no useful alternative that would provide care for any group other than themselves. They are disrespectful to the President, portraying him as a witch doctor or a gorilla or as a donkey offering watermelon and ribs on a fantasy “Obama buck” (if it swims like a duck - maybe it IS a noisy, racist duck). Their leaders have gone on record making wildly irresponsible racist statements. We can disagree about health care reform, but - I challenge the radical right to demonstrate that they are not motivated, at least in part, by a racist agenda.

hy is it all of a sudden when former President Jimmy Carter speaks, everyone listens and takes his word as gospel? Carter, the man who brought us not only 18% inflation but 18% interest rates and was arguably the worst President of the 20th Century, decided last week to become an expert in American race relations when he said, "I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African-American", and then went on to say that Representative Joe Wilson and his now infamous “you lie!” outburst was “based on racism. There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president... Those kinds of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care. It's deeper than that.” Once again, Carter has opened his mouth and inserted his peanut crusted foot, as he has done every time he’s opened his mouth since Reagan waxed his tail in 1980. Just because Jimmy is white and a Southerner doesn’t mean he is the spokesman for Conservatives who dare to question President Obama, and call us racists. I am tired of being lectured by people like Jimmy Carter, and others such as the Macon Telegraph’s own Catherine Meeks and Charles Richardson who think that they know a Conservatives’ heart. I’m tired of being told that simply because I disagree with a President that I am a backwoods bumpkin and am in Ms. Meeks’ words, giving “covert racial messages regarding the undesirability of having a black man and his team in charge.” If you believe everything that is printed in the Macon Telegraph, you’d swear the riot police were still hosing black folks down and that there is a lynching a day occurring in Macon, with disgruntled white McCain voters being the culprits. Everyone in the Liberal world, especially the press, jumped on Representative Joe Wilson for forgetting he wasn’t at a UGA-South Carolina game and yelling at the President. But I bet the same people who are calling for Wilson ’s head on a platter never said a

here’s a hustle and bustle, rattle and hum over by the meat section in the commissary. Shoppers are milling through all of those shiny, plastic sheetingwrapped packages of meat. Raw and exposed for inspection. Carefully perused and selected with precision. These packages are hand selected and there is a sense of ownership once they are placed in the shopping cart. Like cavemen after a kill--don’t mess with someone’s bloody meat. Arriving on the scene is Colonel Soand-So’s wife who has rolled in like the Queen of Sheba, or so she thinks. Her husband runs one of the larger squadrons on the base. She believes this title gives her license to do as she pleases in the commissary. He rules the squadron, she feeds the ruler; thus, she can have the best meat selection available to the troops. (Well, that could be her thinking.) What she did do was go over to another’s cart and swipe their meat. The gall! She liked the look of it and took what she felt was better suited for the commander. She had confidence that it was her prerogative. And no one stopped her either.

On military installations there is a perceived sense of hierarchy of who gets what. How can there not be some kind of pyramid in the military’s social world, too? The installations are run by a non-trifling, enforced chain of command. The uniformed services take this directive as seriously as a heart attack. Not that it should, but their working environment’s world order easily transfers over to the everyday exchanges. The example of the meat-thieving commander’s wife’s piss poor behavior has a flip-side as well. We were last stationed at a smallish base in a smallish town. Pretty much what would be described as a “military town.” See, I, too, was a commander’s wife and knew the other like spouses, but no one seemed to know it when I was out and about. So, when I would go off-base and be involved in community activities, I was privy to and would often hear tales of grandiose misbehaviors allegedly performed by commanders’ spouses. (And our commissary, too, was a hub of perceived social hierarchy

and often the stark setting for such ghastly moments.) For instance, supposedly a group commander’s wife was just as much of a hard-ass and unpleasant of a character as her husband. She was described as a “total bitch” and that she would often cut in front of others waiting to check out simply because her time was more precious as a commander’s spouse. This was preposterous. I knew the accused and she was a shy homebody who homeschooled her kids and held great respect for others. I asked one of these pot-stirrers if they actually knew Total Bitch and she confessed to just passing the story around and not actually knowing the spouse. When sitting back as a casual observer, lessons can be learned on a military base--- a kind of microcosm of society. If the person in charge gets the best seat at a formal dinner, then he should get the best food, too, or if the person in charge acts likes a jerk at work, then his entire family is a bunch of jerks, as well. Unfortunately, perception overshadowing reality is a very real facet of the military.

Caregiver Tricked Into Changing Perverts Diaper A woman offering child-care services in Melbourne, Fla., was dismayed to learn in August that a scam pulled on her by a diaper-wearing man in his 40s was not illegal. A man called her, on behalf of his disabled adult "brother," who has a mental age of 5 and poor bladder control, and she began assisting him in her home during the day for $600 a week. She was later outraged to learn that the "brother" was really the caller and was actually normal (except for his perversion). However, as Brevard County Sheriff's officials told Florida Today, since the woman consented to changing diapers and was fully paid for her services, they were unable to charge the man with a crime.

Prison sentence for woman who kept mom's body MIAMI (Reuters) – A Florida woman was sentenced on Monday to a year and a day in prison for keeping her dead mother's body in a bedroom for years while collecting more than $230,000 in pension benefits, prosecutors said. Penelope Sharon Jordan, 61, of Sebastian, Florida, pleaded guilty to theft of government funds in June, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami said. Police said when they found the body in a spare bedroom in March, Jordan told them her mother had been dead for at least six years.

Read The Road before it hits the Big Screen

ormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize winning 2006 novel, The Road, is definitely another case of read the book before you see the film. John Hillcoat's (“The Proposition”) adaptation will no doubt be a box office success, but when stars such as Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron are on screen, no matter how true their acting, the audience will still have a name associated with them in their subconscious. Conversely, McCarthy's leads are simply known to the reader as "the man" and "the boy" as names in this wasteland have become as inconsequential as last season's baseball scores. Due to the pure folly and combative ego of man, humanity has been reduced to the bare necessities (food, water, shelter) of survival in a gray existence of winter and ash strewn landscapes.The tribulations and sufferings the man encounters is of Biblical proportions as each day whatever remaining faith he may have left is tested.We find that the man differs from the roving bands of cannibals in that he is able to keep one more necessity for survival alive and essential to both he and the boy's everyday existence - hope.Whether that hope is false or true is up to the reader, but it is this glimmer of hope under the decaying surface that propels the reader to keep turning the pages in this novel.As doom and unspeakable horrors encounter this father and son along every turn, this hope manages to follow with them in each turn of a corner along a journey to find the world, no matter how imperfect, which they once knew. This is a world without birds and their morning songs, there are no fish left in the seas, and there are no beautiful sunsets only a penetrating wind that carries the ashes of a scorched earth right into their lungs with each breath of life. McCarthy's sparse writing style (capturing perfectly the ferocity of the existing elements left in this world) centers on the communication of facts and never really unfolds into a conversation. But a man, a boy, their cart, and a gun with two bullets isn't a setting for conversations, it's about basic survival. The imagery that McCarthy assembles is not pretty; man stripped past his most primitive does not leave room for a blueeyed prince to save the day. And yet, these two are the "good guys." They hold inside them the same special characteristic that is found within the book as we join the pair for each frozen sunrise along the road. It's hope, and it's a father's love for his child above all things that is the most beautiful necessity in the book. - David Higdon

You seem to express yourself well this week and others are quick to jump on your rolling band wagon. This is a good time to redecorate or go shopping for new clothes since you have a great sense of color coordination. Whatever you do this week turns out excellent. PISCES (Feb 19-March 20): You are emotional, ultra-sensitive, easy going, and sociable. You are very business oriented now and may be looking for something that makes YOU your own boss.
