RUNNING COMMENTARY My mother was a registered nurse for over forty years. Back when she first started in the early 1970s, things were a lot different. You got your two-year Associates Degree from nursing school, and then according to Ma, “you got thrown to the wolves.” She told me about taking her psych clinicals at the Weston State Hospital in West Virginia where the basement housed the deranged— and when that big heavy door closed and locked behind her that first day, Ma decided she’d made a mistake and screamed to be let out of the ward. They didn’t open that door, and she powered through it, earned her degree. I don’t know if it still is, but I believe I heard that Weston State had been converted into a haunted house for Halloween thrills. You won’t catch Ma visitin’. Ma worked the emergency room and volunteered as an EMT, did home healthcare and worked in nursing homes. She’s delivered babies (including Jody Payne’s son, Austin), and once, she got to meet Michael Jackson and nearly every sibling (only Latoya was absent) when they visited their grandmother at the hospital in Eufaula, Alabama. She wrapped up her career in what I feel she considered her most important and fulfilling role as a nurse at the VA in Augusta, GA where she worked with quadriplegic veterans. Without hesitation, I can tell you that my mother was dedicated to her patients, especially the older infirmed who suffered from loneliness as much as any affliction. Ma always had time to bake for them, hear and share stories, and even do a little shopping should the need present itself. Nursing wasn’t just a job, it was devotion. Recently, I found myself in the back of an ambulance, strapped to a gurney with my daughter as she rattled and barked with the croup. She’d woken in the night, coughing, wheezing (or so we’d thought), and we assumed she’d caught the flu that had floored me for the last week. By the morning it was worse, and by the time we’d gotten to her pediatrician, we were nearing full-on panic. It took the doctor on-call less than a minute to deduce croup— Carter’s little throat was closing up and her tiny tummy and ribs were accordioning at a rapid rate. Call the EMT’s, barely a few minutes more for them to arrive— and we were off! The whole thing happened so fast, my wife barely had time to register. I don’t even know if she knew she’d started crying. We spent nearly twenty-four hours in the Children’s Hospital at Navicent Health. There were breathing treatments, intravenous steroid drips, x-rays… I got plenty o’ imagery and parental guilt I could lay on ya’ (it’s still weighin’ on me), but what I really want to do is say “Thank you.” Thank you to the EMTs, the doctors, respiratory therapists, the techs, and especially the nursing staff at Navicent for the care they took with my daughter. I want to name some names because you all deserve the individual recognition, but I don’t want to leave anybody out. I grew up under the care of one of the greatest nurses walkin’ God’s green earth, and by that comparison, you all were exceptional. I hope I never have to see any of you in a professional capacity ever again— but if it I do, I’ll be a little less frightened knowing you’re there. –AI aaron@thecreekfm.com

Spitting stories of love, loss and pain, Nashville's Great Peacock—comprised of lead singer and guitarist Andrew Nelson, guitarist Blount Floyd, drummer Nick Recio and bass player Frank Keith IV—challenge the very notion of genre, dismantling tradition and blurring the lines between rock 'n roll, conventional folk music and true Americana. Having earned praise from Paste, the Nashville Scene, American Songwriter, No Depression, Relix and PopMatters, the band ignites a kind of unapologetic spark. As fixtures on the Southern festival circuit including Shakey Knees, they've shared stages with an abundance of equally-minded noise-makers, including Susto, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Cage the Elephant, American Aquarium, Margo Price and Jonathan Tyler. AMY EDWARDS QUESTIONS WITH

OF ABBA MANIA By Aaron Irons

You too can dance and jive, having the time of your life- wooooo ooooooooh on Sunday, February 17th at The Grand Opera House with ABBA Mania! ABBA Mania is returning to Macon, recreating ABBA's last live concert. I went last year and believe me, I felt like I was seventeen again, a dancing queen, decked in a feather boa! It was ABBA-mazing! I had the pleasure of learning more about this tribute band through Amy Edwards, who portrays ABBA's Anni-Frid. Hailing from Australia, Amy has toured the world with the band Human Nature, Disney’s Lion King, and she was part of the original London cast of Priscilla, Queen of The Desert. Amy calls Las Vegas home now, and when she’s not having the time of her life in ABBA Mania, you can catch her doing Pin Up & Zombie Burlesque and with the enduring Legends In Concert.

1

Q: When did you realize you wanted to be or were destined to become a member of ABBA Mania? A: I first listened to "Dancing Queen" under the age of 5 and was told that I would walk around in my Mum's high heels singing it non-stop. So probably then. But once I got onstage with the show 3 years ago, I remember feeling the most fun I had felt in a long time, and I really was honored to be a part of this tribute.

2

Q: Is there a process/ritual that you do to get into character? A: Listen to ABBA of course!

14 FEBRUARY 1-14, 2019

3

Q: Benny v/s Bjorn- who has the better hair? A: Ooh, I have to be careful here… I'd have to say Benny. He is my husband after all!

4

Q: Agnetha v/s Anni-Frid- who would win in a dance-off? A: Not being biased but Frida! She'd go all out to win. She's not afraid to get her hands dirty.

5

Q: Which song do you perform that you feel connects most with the audience? A: I always feel a strong bond with the audience when we sing “Fernando”. It's about friends who were once freedom fighters, and they are sharing their memories. I think a lot of people can relate to fighting for your freedom, so I always feel a connection when I'm singing these words.

6

Q: Have you seen a resurgence in the ABBA Mania love since the release of Mama Mia/ Mama Mia 2? A: I think the movies bring in a younger crowd for sure, which is always fun to see, but we know we are always supported by the die-hard fans who have grown up with this music.

7

9

11

A: I hope they would LOVE it! We are carrying on their legacy & still sharing the music that changed the world!

A: You know what? I actually love all of the costumes we wear because they show the different eras of ABBA. They take you from the '70s through to the '80s and I love taking people on that journey through their amazing outfits.

A: Of course, but if I told you our secret, then it wouldn't be the ABBA special!

Q: What do you think the actual members of ABBA would think of your ABBA Mania show?

8

Q: You go through an impressive amount of costume changes, which is your favorite? A: I love the costume that we end the show in. It's an iconic look of theirs that I love to wear! You'll have to come & see the show to know which one I'm talking about!

Q: Which costume could you do without or is the hardest to get into?

10

Q: What is your favorite ABBA song and why? A: The most popular classic like “Mamma Mia” & “Dancing Queen” have always been favorites of mine, but since performing in the show, I love “Take A Chance On Me” - I have so much fun singing this one & hearing the audience sing along with us, & also “Chiquitita” — hearing people applaud as soon as the song starts is a pretty special thing!

Q: Do you have a great Swedish Meatball recipe you can share with our readers?

For more information on ABBA Mania or to purchase tickets, head over to thegrandmacon.com or call 478-301-5470.

THE Z BEANS STORY BY SHANE BUERSTER

HOME SWEET HOME: THE FOURTH STEP OF FARM TO CUP

While the fourth step within our farm to cup series may be the most stressful, it is also the most rewarding. The bags from the previous step are ready to go. They sit in the storage room at the processing facility, waiting for their next destination. This fourth step of the farm to cup series will be told from the point of view of Arturo Penarreta.

We all relax for the rest of the day. We spend time together, as it's Shane's final day in Ecuador. After 4 weeks, our work has done. We reminisce, thinking about all the fun times we had— the 15 hour bus rides, the waterfalls, the good food, the incredible plantations, the hard work. What a 4 weeks it has been.

I knock on Shane's door at 5:30am. I tell him it's time to get up. I have already cooked eggs and bacon, and I've made some fresh squeezed orange juice as well as a cup of coffee. Shane, a little tired from the day before, makes his way over to the table. We eat quickly, and head out the door. Gerardo, our trusted taxi driver, is waiting on us. He flies through the mountain, taking us down to Piñas, Ecuador. After 20 minutes of non-stop twisting and turning, we arrive at the processing facility. It's 6:15am and the container will arrive in 45 minutes. Fabricio, Marie, Shane, and I all sit around and have one more good cup of coffee.

At 8pm that night, we drop Shane off at the bus stop. He says his farewells and begins his journey back home. He texts me the next morning, letting me know he has made it safely to the airport in Quito.

At 6:45, our help arrives. Michael Ochoa, a native of Piñas, has been loading containers his entire life. While it's not been sacks of coffee beans, corn and bananas pose an even more difficult task. It's 7:00, the container has still yet to arrive. I can tell... Shane is getting extremely antsy. I've never understood why he worries quite as much as he does. Minutes later, I see Shane fly out the door. The container has finally arrived. Now, the fun part— loading up each of these sacks, one by one into the container. The catch is, you only have an hour to do it. The driver needs to be at the port of Guayaquil by mid afternoon, and it takes quite some time to get there. After contemplating the most efficient way to do so, Shane and Michael begin loading up the container. After 40 minutes of hard work, they finish. All 140 bags are stacked neatly. Shane and I shut the door to the container, lock it, and say farewell. The driver leaves, destined for the port of Guayaquil.

28

2 weeks later, I receive a WhatsApp message from Shane: "Arturo, the coffee has been held up at the Panama Canal. The freight forwarder told me our container didn't make the cargo ship. It will be another 2 weeks before our coffee arrives to the port of Savannah." On queue, 2 weeks later, I receive another text from Shane: "Arturo, the coffee has arrived to the port of Savannah. We should be getting it in 2-3 days." 2 days later, I receive a picture message from Shane. It's a picture of the bags— stacked, just how we left them. The fourth step is complete. The bags have made their way from Piñas, Ecuador, to Macon, Georgia.

50,000 SHADES OF GRAY JOE STRUMMER The Aragon Ballroom Chicago, 1979

I was never a big fan of the punk/New Wave movement, so I left the shootin’ of those shows to a couple of my partners back in the day. I dug Elvis Costello a lot, and The Clash was right up there for me too. They were both outfits that had great songs & melodies while a lot of that kind of ‘music’ was just energy & noise— at least to my ears. But The Clash had the goods. They weren’t easy to shoot ‘cause that was too traditional for them I guess. Elvis too actually. Total pains in the ass to get photo passes from... I just bribed the stage door security dude (who was my friend) with some photos and shot the show anyway. The crowd was rowdy as hell, and I just slipped around & shot what I needed to shoot, got the hell in the back of the joint, and dug the rest of the show. They had Bo Diddley open the show for ‘em so that was cool too. I never met The Clash but always admired their politics & principals. Turns out that ol’Joe was an early English hippie commune dude who turned real radical along the way! Still play Sandanista & London Calling… Great records to this day!

THE INTERVIEW

Liz Brasher

BY AARON IRONS

A lot of rockers first found their voices in the church. Indeed, can you imagine the evolution of rock n’ roll without the gospel that inspired Elvis Presley and Little Richard? For 27-year-old Liz Brasher, the foundation for her house of music was built in the church, singing praise with her family while her father’s taste for the British Invasion opened windows into the realm of secular and popular music. Her style has matured organically from those days, first as a teen playing pop rock then into her higher education in Chicago where she discovered the depth of America’s musical legacy. Last year, Liz released the Outcast EP, four songs that introduced the world at large to her developed blend of garage rock and R&B. She’s been saddled with the title of the rebel, and it’s one she relishes if not prefers. On January 18th, Fat Possum Records released the debut full-length Painted Image. I spoke to Liz the day before her album was scheduled to hit shelves and digital markets. Vanguard tracks like “Love Feasts” and “Body of Mine” had already made me an admirer, but her energy and humble enthusiasm made me a believer. continued on page 22

While I was singing in the church, I was hearing all these other influences on the radio and at school... So the Beatles were probably my first real introduction to rock n' roll. My Dad played the Beatles records at home a lot. I fell in love with them and that just started a lifelong love towards British rock! Dad was a Beatles fan. What was Mama diggin'? My mom was all about Gospel music and nothing but Gospel music— and she's still that way. It was a crazy combo in the house. I had Motown and the Beatles for my dad's side and then just hymnals and contemporary music from my mom's side. Were you playing in bands when you were in high school? Yeah, I was, I was fronting a pop-rock kind of band that was influenced a lot by early Maroon 5. That's kind of what we wanted to be like. And then before that, I had a little acoustic duo where we would do... it was just me and this other girl, Morgan, and we would do some folk, some rock, some covers together. When did you start getting into the deeper roots, the music history part of it? Is that when you went to college? Yeah, when I went to Chicago I was confronted by my lack of southern music knowledge! Well, and actually American music history. I had a drummer... He was really well-

22 FEBRUARY 1-14, 2019

educated, and he came from the Appalachian Mountains, and he's like, "Hey, what do you know about Bob Dylan and the Staple Singers?" [He] introduced me to all these different people, making me go back actually all the way to Stephen Foster to study American music. Yeah, that started my love for that 'cause then it became, you know, “Shoot, I know nothing about where I grew up!”, because it was all Spanish-speaking. It was all Dominican-oriented. He really confronted me with that and then it just went forward from there. I know you ended up in Atlanta at one point, which of course is just a hop, skip and a jump up from Macon. When did you get there, and who are you running around with at that point? Atlanta was right after I spent three years in Chicago. That was 2010... to '13 or '14, I was in Chicago— and then 2014 to 2018 I was in Atlanta. Oh, so you were there for a stretch of time? Yeah, for a good little bit. Atlanta was great because that's where I put together and started to front a trio. I found a rhythm section that clicked really well with me. We started playing around, and from there, I was looking at who to make records with, and Scott Bomar in Memphis came up as one of my top picks. He loved what I was doing and that's when I came to Memphis for the very first time and recorded with the trio here. That's when I fell in love with Memphis and then moved here. But I was in Atlanta for a little bit, but I didn't really run around with anybody. I was kind of trying to do my own thing and write as many songs as I possibly could and work on songwriting there.

Did you ever have a chance to come down to Macon and play at all when you were in Atlanta? No! I wanted to, but I hadn't— so I'm so excited. I'll get to play there soon! Well, let's talk about Memphis because I absolutely love the city. Not just for the obvious musical reasons, but it's got its own rhythm and style and the food and the people and it's just a mix of everything great. You got to go to Ardent Studios and work there, and I am a ridiculous Big Star fan, as matter of fact... Oh cool! What was it like to record at Ardent? Ardent was really unique because we didn't record a bulk of the record there or anything because the record is primarily recorded at Electrosonic Studios, which is Scott Bomar's place— but the string section, there's a whole string arrangement on the album and that was recorded at Ardent. Everybody just kept telling me like, "Oh, you're going to Ardent!" And I already knew I was going to love Ardent, but they're like, "Especially for strings, you just can't top recording in Memphis at Ardent!" And I didn't know that, you know? This was my first experience ever being at Ardent but also ever having strings on anything of mine. So we walk in, and it's really cool. There's like this neat little atrium in the middle— and Jody is there— so I'm like, "What is going on in my life?" It was so smooth and so professional, and it went really well. [Big Star Drummer] Jody Stephens? Yeah, Jody from Big Star! That's right! He was just sitting there and friendly as all... That's what Memphis is like though, honestly. You're just walking around legends or places where legends used to walk— and you can still feel that energy. So I think you're right. It's so unique here. You put out the Outcast EP last spring, put everyone on notice— and it was just in time for the festival circuit. I think you were at Shaky Knees in Atlanta... I want to know how the relationship with Fat Possum Records came together— and why was this the perfect time to release Painted Image? Because it seems like it's been simmering for a little while. It absolutely had been. When I came with the trio to Memphis to record, it was just me out of my own pocket, really recording a demo or anything to put me in front of labels— because I really didn't know where to start or where to begin? We came, and we recorded 15 songs in two days, and Scott Bomar, the producer, I guess he had called up, Bruce Watson at Fat Possum who happens to live in Memphis also and told him, "Yeah, you need to come." I think it was him and also JD Wilkes from the Legendary Shack Shakers told Bruce Watson about me. So, he comes and he sat down and listened to what we were doing. We were still in the middle of tracking— and his jaw dropped, and I'm just watching, and I can't believe what's happening, you know? He tells me the next day like, "Hey, can we go meet at Central BBQ for lunch?" And I'm like, "Yeah, of course." And he proceeds to tell me— over barbecue— about how the record deal that they're going to present to me would be like. So, you know, we're talking like years in the making... From the time I was a little girl I had dreamt about the time where I could be on a label— and especially one that I respected so much like Fat Possum. They signed me and then I came back to Memphis for two more weeks, and we recorded Painted Image as you know it now during that time period. We spent a little more time with those songs to develop them. After doing that, we realized, "Oh s--t, this is actually a really good record, and it would be a damn shame if while nobody knows who I am, nobody's anticipating this really great record that we released, and it goes nowhere!" So that's when we went back into the studio— because I write all the time, and I had written a lot of songs

"

FROM THE TIME I WAS A LITTLE GIRL I HAD DREAMT ABOUT THE TIME WHERE I COULD BE ON A LABEL— AND ESPECIALLY ONE THAT I RESPECTED SO MUCH LIKE FAT POSSUM.

continued from page 23 since then— and we just picked four songs that we thought would be a great representation of what the live trio sounds like. That's where Outcast came from, we added two songs from Painted Image with that and put it out as an EP to just be able to base bookings and things like that around for all of last year, which went really well. And now it seems like it's the perfect time to release Painted Image! That was very wise to do because it looks like your 2019 is shaping up to be even busier than your 2018. Yeah! I don't know how that's possible, but yeah! The album drops tomorrow. Have you got a big party planned? No! I don't have a big party planned for tomorrow, but there's just a few things with a local record store that we'll be doing and a live taping of the album that we'll be doing in the next few weeks. But I haven't thought about a big party tomorrow or anything like that. I don't know. Maybe a surprise party will be in store for me. Tell me about the live taping. Where are you going to do that? We're going to do that at DittyTV studios, and they're a really great station that's getting international recognition now. They're actually based here out of Memphis. But what they do is, they broadcast music videos from a lot of roots-based music 24 hours day! You know how MTV you used to play music videos? Yes. I am old enough to remember that.

Yeah. So they're doing that. They're really great. They've gotten an Amazon channel, on the Amazon Fire stick, you plug it in and the DittyTv app is there... They're doing great things, and they're going to expand from just roots music to other genres as well to open up those floodgates. They've got this great studio in town, and they put on these live sessions at DittyTv where it looks and it feels like an MTV Unplugged almost. So that's what we'll be doing at the beginning of February. You've got the power of the Gospel singer, you got this bluesman soul. There's no denying that you got a little rock n' roll, punk rock going on in your heart. What do you want to see happen next as this album takes off and you hit the road in 2019? Honestly, next, I'd love to just collaborate with a bunch of different musicians, a bunch of different artists from any genre, honestly, that click with what it is that I'm doin'. Because I've spent so much time in this singular bubble, I'd love to expand and collaborate with other people. Give me your top three people you want to collaborate with. Oh, man! Top three? Like crazy, out-there, I'll-probablynever-meet? Like throw it out there in the universe and see if it comes back to you? Okay, Okay. Top three. Paul Mccartney, number one! I had to do that! Number two, I'm going to put Bob Dylan up there, but I know that one will never happen! And then number three, I would say Dolly Parton. I love her!

FEELS LIKE LOCAL

LIVING LIFE INTENTIONALLY

BY SCOTT MITCHELL PHOTO CREDIT: CHRIS SMITH

Dolly Parton once said, “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” I have struggled over the years with this idea of living life intentionally. Sometimes, it is easier to go with the flow rather than standing up for your beliefs. I have learned that sometimes taking even the smallest steps can lead you into a life of intentional living. This has become even more clear to me now as a local business owner. More and more, the items that I carry, whether locally owned or nationally recognized brands, have significant meaning to me personally. Chavez for Charity is a national company that uses their line of products to promote awareness and raise money for more than a dozen causes including this year’s Erase Hate bracelets and shirts. 25% of the profits benefit the Matthew Shepard Foundation which empowers individuals to embrace human dignity and diversity through outreach, advocacy, and resource programs, and Chavez for Charity strives to replace hate with understanding, compassion, and acceptance.

On a local level, I have found so many wonderful people that have changed the way I do business. Covered. by Colby Owner & Designer, Colby Garrison believes that intentionality within her business is key. She aims to run her business so that "all customers receive a positive shopping experience while relationships are being built." Colby says that "knowing my customers, thinking of their interests during the creating process, and communicating regularly with them" are ways she chooses to be intentional.

Scott Mitchell is the owner of Travis Jean Emporium and is the co-host of Deconstructing Divas on 100.9 The Creek. He enjoys spending time with his family and furbabies, volunteering, gardening, traveling, watching Broadway shows, and cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs.

I feel that learning how to align yourself with positive people that continually uplift you and inspire you is key to a successful business. Find organizations that align with your life’s mission and get involved. I encourage you to give back to the community that so graciously supports us by partnering with local nonprofits and community organizations to ensure that Macon is a place we are proud to call home.

H&H SOUL FOOD

807 FORSYTH STREET, MACON There may be no better culinary or geographical icon in the south than fried chicken. The humble bird, seasoned, battered and dipped in hot oil is a staple of American cuisine, true— but no one’s gonna argue that good, southern fried chicken is the undisputed champ of ‘em all! Since 1959, H&H in Macon has been a bastion for this poetry of poultry— and the list of folks who find comfort in Mama Hill and Mama Louise’s signature is nearly endless. Any given day at “The H” could find dedicated Maconites dining shoulder to shoulder with rock royalty like Jaimoe, new stars like Marcus King, or star athletes like Jake Fromm— and no matter the era or occupation, everybody wants a bite o’ that sweet, sweet bird. Heck, on the day this picture was taken, we walked right in only to be greeted by legendary photographer and tour mystic Kirk West! H&H manager Mark Manning calls the fried chicken the “quintessential comfort/soul food”. He also says if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! “We haven’t tweaked the recipe. We try to uphold the legacy of Mama Hill and Mama Louise. That’s the best thing we can do to honor them!”

BO TALKS

THE DARK TRUTH ABOUT THE DARK KNIGHT

I am a giant nerd, that’s no secret— but with that great declaration comes great assumptions that I’m here to dispel. Today, that comes in the form of me explaining to you that Batman isn’t all that great. I know, it’s not what you want to hear— and believe me, I have caught more than an earful for making such a controversial statement. It starts with his backstory, the heartbreaking tale of a child losing his parents to drug abuse in a society which incriminates the coping mechanisms of the impoverished. Oh, wait... that’s not what happened at all. They were insanely wealthy and were murdered while taking a stroll in their fanciest clothes— decked out with flashy jewelry and Rolex watches, no doubt— down the seediest alley in a city which overflows with crime and discontent. I mean, it was called Crime Alley!

some semblance of nourishment... Nope, wrong again. He spent the rest of his childhood growing up in prestigious boarding schools and having the run of his family’s enormous castle. Not to mention having a parental figure— his poor butler, Alfred— wait on him hand and foot. He’s basically Richie Rich, but without the poignant stand-off against John Larroquette.

The Wayne’s are always portrayed as champion philanthropists, yet if they really cared so much about the less fortunate citizens of Gotham City— why live such lavish lifestyles? I’m calling horse-apples on that whole notion. They went to the movies draped in garments that could’ve probably paid for an entire family’s groceries for a year! They put the Wayne name on buildings and products, all the while claiming some far-fetched connection to the working class… Sound familiar?

Although Batman has incredible resources and an admirable moral compass, he’s still just a regular human. Granted, a man with a workout regimen that would put Richard Simmons to shame, but only a man. He’s not an alien with biological invulnerabilities or a demi-god with the ability to talk to fish or even a guy with a magic space ring. Batman is just a billiondollar chin with a cool costume. Seriously, the most interesting thing about Batman is his impressive rogue’s gallery. It should speak volumes that his most notorious adversary is a clown. He can take down super-powered humans and aliens all day long, but a maniacal Ronald McDonald with a hand-buzzer and an anarchist attitude steps into the fray and suddenly the guy can barely keep up? You can keep that “Jeff Bezos with a grudge” and an affinity for flying rodents, thank you very much. I’m more of a Marvel guy anyways.

So sadly, young Bruce Wayne had to go live at an orphanage, a la Oliver Twist. Begging for morsels of gruel in the hope he might find

Ladies and gentleman, our next bout is fueled by hillbilly fury and retro rock n’ roll revolution… Two entities steeped in the rebelliousness of yesteryear evolved from princes and kings… In the pink corner, fighting out of Bethesda, Maryland… He is the Rock Billy rebel, the voice of rock n’ roll, and an enduring portrait or rockabilly swagger— Robert Gordon! And in the black corner… a trio of teddy boy twangers from NYC by way of the United Kingdom, Gretch-y, greasy, and built for speed— they are the Stray Cats! Wrasslin’ for their respective charges are two enthusiasts with opinions divined of solid gold... One is a devotee of rock n’ roll’s checkered pedigree and that primary denizen of Honky Tonk Hell— The Aaron Irons! There’s no hard, fast rule to rock n’ roll, but in some respects, it’s all about the attitude— and style. Robert Gordon had both and by the gallon. He also had a voice custom built for the golden era of Sun and Liberty that was equal parts Elvis, Gene, and Eddie. Was he a poet? F--k, no, he was a hip swingin’ hepcat with a perfect pompadour who embodied the leanest, meanest qualities of rockabilly in an era that was strangling with musical cholera, Saturday Night Fever, and a wave of watered-down country-pop pablum. If we’re pullin’ out our best moves for the W then the sonic equivalent of a piledriver has to be the legendary Link Wray who had Gordon’s back with the duo’s debut in ‘77 and ‘78’s fantastic Fresh Fish Special. Throw in a DDT from guitarist Chris Spedding and a Super Kick from the omega Danny Gatton on subsequent records, and there ain’t a “cat” left standin’. Both Gordon and the Stray Cats came out of the near post-punk, pre-New Wave of the late CBGB’s silver age, but Gordon amped it up with straight, homegrown rockabilly while the Stray Cats tucked tails and headed for England to tease teddy boys. If you’re judging either act on the basis of guitar players, Robert Gordon’s gotcha with the iron claw. Brian Setzer is good, no doubt— but he’s no Link Wray. And remember the attitude? As much as I love Link Wray, the dynamic between Gordon and Chris Spedding sounded like Rockpile and the Sex Pistols birthed a mutant child together and dressed it at Lansky Brothers. Robert Gordon wasn’t a bandwagon-er or nostalgia artist. He understood that rock n’ roll couldn’t, wouldn’t die— it only needed a conduit. —Aaron Irons

Rock n Roll trios, let’s face it, are the most fun— drums, guitar, and bass are the basic structure for all rock bands. When the format works, the raw, tight-knit camaraderie bleeds into the performance. Comprised of Brian Setzer on guitar and vocals, Slim Jim Phantom on the kit, and Lee Rocker on the stand-up bass, The Stray Cats were a one-of-a-kind American Rock n Roll band who brought rockabilly and retro angst to the spotlight when the New Wave movement was taking over the airwaves and record labels worldwide. Formed in 1979, The Stray Cats didn’t buy in to the current fads, but rather they brought a love of denim, leather, punk rock, and songwriting to the forefront during the mainstream playlist of AM Gold radio and disco marathons. These Cats ignited every venue when they played: Slim Jim Phantom created a backbeat and drive with the stage presence of a lead singer— he never sat down. Lee Rocker was as likely to be found playing from atop his stand-up as he was spinning it while keeping the dancing rhythm. And then you have Brian Setzer who is a musicians’ guitar player. He delivers the signature riffs of the 50’s and 60’s with the technical proficiency of the classically trained. In 1983, they won a Grammy (when that still meant something) for Best New Artist, but it was well known that members of Zeppelin, The Who, and the Stones had been coming to their shows for years. In fact, it had been Rockpile’s Dave Edmunds who saw a Cats’ show and approached the band about recording their debut album. The band is loved globally for creating music that has brought people together for 40 years. Be on the lookout for a new album and a tour in 2019! —David Higdon

MACON CIVIC CLUB CHAIRMAN

David Wilson By Aaron Irons Photos by Doug Clark

Every year, local businessmen and women gather for a performance designed to entertain Central Georgia and provide support for area charities. The Macon Civic Club’s annual musical revue plays to thousands and raises hundreds of thousands of dollars that are injected back into our community. For the players, it’s an opportunity to showcase oft-hidden talents and feed creative impulses— and for the audience, it’s the chance to be a part of a thrilling, Macon legacy. This year marks the 58th annual musical revue for the Macon Civic Club, and Chairman David Wilson is excited to share it with everyone. I spoke to David in between rehearsals about what to expect from this year’s performance entitled Turn On Your Lovelight. If his enthusiasm is any indication then this will be one of the MCC’s best, and one you won’t want to miss!

36 FEBRUARY 1-14, 2019

AI- This will mark the Macon Civic Club's 58th annual musical revue. What's the secret to the longevity and continued support?

DW- The secret is our community just “gets it”. They understand that this is not about the Civic Club. It is about all of us working together as a team to donate as much money as possible to our local charities and having fun doing it together whether you are on the stage, in the audience, or working backstage. The audience gets the “feel good” factor because they know the money they spend makes a positive impact to over 50 local charities. Turn On Your Lovelight is the title of this year's event. What can folks look forward to with this production?

A wide range of artists that we are covering. Stevie Wonder, Elvis, Carly Simon, Steve Miller, The Band, The Allman Brothers, Jerry Garcia, Blues Traveler (as promised to David Higdon and Jamie Weatherford from our Bragg Jam days), Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Grace Potter, Chris Stapleton, Bobby Bland, & Linda Ronstadt. Everybody has to like at least several of those artists right? I will keep the songs a secret for now, but I guarantee they will all be popular songs that you know. And comedy. The comedy this year will be next level because of performers like Goober. More on him in a moment… What are some of the charities will you be supporting this year?

to technical support with social media to selling ads: everyone contributes something. It is the definition of a team effort, BUT one spoiler I will give is Nan Solomon is coming back to sing a duet with her daughter, Nan Harper. Which leads me to your next question…. At this point, who's been performing with the revue the longest?

Nan Solomon! I think she has done almost 50 shows. She started when she was 12 & she is a legend. I give her son, Steve Solomon aka Solly, credit for making that happen. This year Steve’s son Peter will be in the show so there will be three generations of Solomon’s in the show. That has never happened before and is going to be extra special. Steve’s father (also named Peter) is a founding member of the Club. It’s a total family affair for the Solomon’s. Steve will be bringing Elvis back for the first time in 10 years. That is worth the price of admission by itself! Are there any new editions to the revue this year that had hidden talents?

Yes. The first one that comes to mind is Thomas Reichert aka Rooster. He is going to roast the Mayor in a way that only a son can. I warned the Mayor last night and I could literally smell his fear. Looking back, do you have a favorite performance from Macon Civic Club's past revues?

For the first time ever Bragg Jam will be My favorite thing I have seen on stage was one of the featured charities, and I am very from my first show, Black Tie and Tails. excited about that because I love the Bragg THE SECRET IS OUR Jimbo Walker was a preacher, and he was family and that was the best board I have conducting a shotgun wedding ceremony. I could fill the entire 11th Hour with similar stories. Will you be performing? If so, what? And if not, what would you do?

Yes! I am “dancing” in Higher Ground & A Little Less Conversation. I will rap, yes rap, the Timberlake part of Sexyback. I sing back up on a few songs and will be attempting to tell jokes again. Courtesy laughs are appreciated!

What do you want to tell anyone hasn't been to a Macon Civic Club show?

Wherever your expectations are for the show please lower them significantly. Kidding! I would say that it’s totally worth coming to see for two reasons. First, because I know of no other show where in any given number you will see a lawyer on electric guitar, a banker on piano, a doctor on guitar with an ENT surgeon singing……and you know them all and it’s good! Second, and most of all, I would say again is they will get the “feel good” factor of knowing their money is supporting charities

in our community. Charities who depend on their donations. Last year we gave away almost $200,000 and we are on track to exceed that, but we can’t do it unless you join us at the Grand Opera House January 30 through February 2nd. Let’s do this!

Make plans to attend the Macon Civic Club’s Turn On Your Lovelight at the Grand Opera House January 30February 2nd. Tickets available at maconcivicclub.com.

WATCH THIS

CHRISTINE No, it’s not a remake of the 1983 Stephen King adaptation. This is the true story of Christine Chubbuck, a TV newscaster whose life begins to unravel in 1970s Florida. The sensitive script fleshes out the personality of a career woman devoted not only to the cause of journalism, but also to the community. But as the story unfolds, Chubbuck’s loneliness becomes an increasingly dominant force in her life. Better than it should be, less depressing than it could be, Christine kind of falters at the end - which might have been inevitable. The cast of character actors acquit themselves universally well, particularly Rebecca Hall— subtle and impenetrable in the title role— and Tracy Letts, as the salty station manager. Even Michael C. Hall (TV’s “Dexter”) rises above his usual station. While Christine is imperfect both as a film and as an examination of mental illness, the points it makes about sensationalism and exploitation are provocative, if not uplifting. Streaming now on Netflix. (An aside: In a strange, “Dangerous Liaisons”-versus-“Valmont”-style coincidence, this was one of two 2016 films about Chubbuck; the other is called “Kate Plays Christine.”) -REX GAMBILL

RECIPE

CHEESE FONDUE FOR 2 Alright guys— when she says she doesn’t want anything for Valentine’s Day, she is LYING! BOLD FACED LYING! She might not want diamonds and platinum jewelry or a new candy apple red sports car with a bow stuck to the roof— but trust me, she wants something. It can be as low-key as a card, a single flower, an entire chocolate cake, or as simple as a night in and something you have prepared for her. Here is a recipe for a hands-on dinner/appetizer for two that oozes with romance!

REQUIRED LISTENING

THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL Early in my life, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill introduced me to a unique style of hip-hop that values poetry, honesty, originality, and happiness. The album focuses on the profound effect we have on the people in our lives, and how actions and consequences are a reflection of true character. Since listening to this album when I was two-years-old riding in the car with my mom, the butterfly effect is something I think of every day. Miseducation isn’t a sermon, but you can’t listen and not learn something. The whole album whacks you over the head with compassion. Lauryn Hill wrote with courage and intensity about respect, and while her lyrics are often concise and modest, such as “Consequence is no coincidence,” and “Miscommunication leads to complication,” these are not easily learned lessons. By presenting this wisdom with ease and candor, Hill inspires her listeners to believe that they can change. Miseducation can teach a person about self-awareness in a few lines: “How you gonna win when you ain’t right within?” Reggae, soul, soft rock, and more influenced Hill, rolling up a lot of genres into an original rhythm. R&B and hip-hop haven’t been the same since 1998, and Hill has not been forgotten— Drake sampled her song “Ex-Factor” this past year. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill portrays the human condition in raw, unadulterated truth, and it will continue to deliver that truth for years to come. As Ms. Lauryn Hill says, “Wisdom is better than silver and gold / I was hopeless, now I’m on hope road.” –AARON IRONS

JEFFERSON’S WOOD EXPERIMENT COLLECTION

1 clove garlic, halved crosswise 1 ½ cups dry white wine 8oz grated gruyere cheese 8oz grated emmental (or swiss) cheese 2 tblsp fresh squeezed lemon juice Freshly grated nutmeg White pepper 1 loaf French bread, cubed Assorted dipping items- sliced green apples, cooked shrimp, prepared steak strips, broccolini or just use your imagination! *Rub the garlic cloves inside of your fondue pot and discard. You can find a fondue pot on Amazon or head over to Goodwill for some funky retro sets— trust me, they have them! Pour wine into pot and place over medium low heat. When liquid starts to bubble, start adding cheeses by the handful, stirring until melted and combined. Add lemon juice. Continue stirring until mixture is smooth and bubbling slightly, about 5 minutes. Season with nutmeg and white pepper. Keep mixture warm and serve with bread, meat, veggies, fruits, whatever you want! This is a super simple menu for a special night. Uncork a bottle of your favorite Pinot Noir to make it extra and cue some Marvin Gaye.

For Christmas, my wife Amanda got me a pair of Arnolfo di Cambio double old fashioned glasses. Yep, just like the ones from Blade Runner. After squealin— ahem, I mean grunting and nodding in manly approval, I was handed another package containing selections from Jefferson’s Wood Experiment Collection. Taking their inspiration from a wine cooperage, the boys and girls at the Kentucky Artisan Distillery took 4-year-old bourbon and aged it in a variety of “environments/ vessels” for another 32 months. So what did they do? They used new oak and wine barrels, alternated wine barrel heads with bourbon barrels, tossed in toasted oak cubes or staves, slow-cooked the wood, and a bunch of other hillbilly, science-fiction-y things that made my eyebrow raise. I have to say, though, I’ve sipped my way across batches 3,4,5,10, and 12— and each one has been progressively more delicious. If you’re after something special to fill your glass, give the Jefferson’s Wood Experiment a shot.
