Karli Buchanan HOUSTON HEALTHCAREʼS FEATURED ATHLETE • According to Bibb County Athletic Director, if you were to look up both “outstanding” and “character” in the dictionary, you

could find Karli Buchanan’s name there. A Junior Softball player at Howard High School, Karli excels academically, maintaining a 4.0 GPA and is ranked #11 in her class standings.

• Karli occupies the position of catcher, and she is the lead off hitter for the Howard Softball team. • She is compassionate and driven, uplifting and inclusive. She is kind to everyone she meets and has a heart for students with special needs. She doesn’t make them feel different, but included, even providing rides to football games on Friday nights.

• “Karli does what she does with no fan fair. She does not seek recognition or call attention to herself. She has a huge impact on the lives of others that sometimes, she does not even know about.” - Howard Softball Head Coach Danny Slaughter

RUNNING COMMENTARY Lindsay Beaver and her band absolutely thrilled with their performance on the Creek Stage a couple o’ weeks ago-- one of the greatest, if not the greatest, trios I’ve ever seen. It was a late show, and I almost didn’t make it. But I rolled into the Rookery about 10:30 and was happy to see more than a few folks in attendance. As the music kicked into gear, more folks came through the door. If you weren’t there, believe me, you missed something. I had a beer at the bar, spoke to some folks then decided to join some friends at a table near the front. Guitarist Brad Stivers was launching into a Bobby Womack song, and he was ridiculously amazing-- again, if you weren’t there, you truly missed something. I sat there marveling-- when this dude appeared on my right and began shouting, “Do you know we can’t see behind you? Do you know that? We can’t see? Do you know we can’t see?” I won’t lie to you, kids-- I was angry. Still am, I guess. Was this hollerin’, older “gentleman” claiming I was too big (read fat), or both? Was it my hat? You’d expect a man of obvious years might’ve learned some manners during his time on Earth. Or maybe it had been a while since his wife had been impressed, and he needed to make an example out of somebody-- and it was my lucky night. I considered my reaction and decided it wasn’t worth interrupting that excellent performance from Stivers. I placed my fury in my back pocket, said goodbye to my friends Frank and Amy, paid my tab, and went home to play some Fire Pro Wrestling. Now, I’m gonna tell you how to ask a man or a woman to move during a show while also offering some respect. First, unless you’re actually tryin’ to start some s--t, don’t yell. If someone is in your way, ask them nicely to move. Explain your request. “Excuse me, my wife/ son/daughter/grandmother/etc is behind you and she/he can’t see.” Exchanging or offering another seat might also be acceptable if space provides. Common sense and decency go a long way, friends-- even in this day and age. I assure you, I don’t intentionally walk into a room and find the worst possible spot to sit or stand. I also don’t appreciate a------s who think their experience is more important than mine. I don’t always choose to be better, but that time I did. I wasn’t trying to ruin this jerk’s night, though he appeared to actually want to ruin mine-- and you know, maybe I had it coming. But if you see a larger, good lookin’ cat in a cowboy hat at the next show you attend, and he’s obscuring your view, maybe take my advice. I’ll bet dollars to donuts (mmm, donuts) that he just wants to have a beer (mmm, beer) and enjoy the music-- and he wants you to as well.

AJ Ghent THE INTERVIEW

BY AARON IRONS

AJ Ghent comes from a family long hailed as progenitors of the Sacred Steel guitar. For himself, AJ has taken the inspiration of his forefathers and combined it with modern innovation to create a sound that’s as unique as it is powerful. His debut studio album, The Neo Blues Project, was a slick mix of R&B, funk, soul, and blues that showcased AJ’s “singing guitar” and passion-- but as strong it was and still is, it’s only the warm-up. AI- The last time you spoke to the 11th hour, you'd just learned that your wife was pregnant. First, congratulations on that-- and second how are you enjoying fatherhood?

AJ- Ha! I'm loving it! I'm loving it. You know, my kid, he's at the majority of all my shows and I'm trying to get him at a point where he's just soaking every single thing on stage in. So he's gonna be ready to get up there soon (laughs)! That was gonna be my next question-- if you're havin' the whole family out on the road?

I am. Yep, I am. It's definitely a learning process, but I think every moment in the process is perfect, man, because you at least get to share it with the people and the child-- you know? Just letting him know, "Hey, you grew up on the road just as well as I did!" I have friends who also perform and tour and recently started taking their kids out because they don't want to see that separation of lifestyles. Like, "This is our family and this is what we do." Of course, you growing up with the legacy of your family in the Sacred Steel and that style of music, you've kind of seen that firsthand. Do you think that's made it easier for you to take your family in that direction?

Oh, most definitely! I grew up going from revival to revival, whether it was my dad, it was my grandparents-and that's what we did. I was a baby traveling, so that process definitely does make it easy knowing for my child because you know the "do's" and the "don'ts" and then you know the "okays". And of course, this is my first born-- well, first child period-- and everything is a learning process. "Oh, is he supposed to do this?" and "Is he supposed to do that?" or "Don't do this, don't do that!" But again, a learning situation and definitely, it made it easy just knowing that I went through the same process growing up.

We're just barely passed a year from when you released The Neo Blues Project. You've had time for that album to breathe, and I know it's been embraced and found an audience. How are you feeling about it now, a year removed?

I think I feel even better about it now than I did when it came out. Not that I wasn't confident in it because I knew it was going to be something different and powerful-- but I'm just so happy about it now. We just announced this past week that it got picked up for the Game of Thrones and their playlist-- you know, the song "Power". I saw that post

Yeah! And right when I saw it, [I thought] maybe, you know, it's died down a little bit (laughs). And then somebody says, "Uh-uh! We love it!" So I'm even more happy and excited about it now than I was. Are you feeling compelled yet to get back into the studio or do you feel like you've got some time?

Oh, well, we're already back in! We actually just finished up the latest project that's going to be out soon. I won't say too much because I don't want to give this huge expectation, but I will say we're looking to have it completed and out really, really soon. It may be a surprise, but I would say really soon. It's going to be a fantastic project. It's going to be a little bit different. I wanted it to be able to capture everything that's done on stage. I wanted to be able to capture that in the studio and along with that, I just wanted to make a classic record. I listened back to some of the Beatles stuff and just the way they recorded. I wanted that old school feel and vibe. I wanted it to be organic, so it's going to be one of those albums. And I think everybody's going to love it. continued on page 18

11thHourOnline.com 17

You have your own studio, correct?

I do, yes. Did you do principal recording there?

I didn't. The Neo Blues Project happened in my studio. I actually went down to a studio in Atlanta, and like I say, not to give the surprise away, but I wouldn't say... A few details won't hurt.

(Laughs) Well, I'll put it this way, it's one of those old studios that's still standing-and I will say a lot of different legends have come through it. American Sushi. I don't know if anybody's familiar with it but like I say, it's one of those vintage, old school, just-go-for-it type studios. Yeah, so you know, again, (laughs) not to give away too many details, we went in and we recorded it... It was setting up, go for it‌ There's not a whole lot of stoppin' and fixin' this, fixin' that part... What you're hearing is natural, and it was probably one take type stuff. It's organic and I love it. I'm in love with the project. Like I said, I know everybody else is gonna love it too. You don't have to tell all your secrets, but do you have any special guest stars poppin' up on the album?

(Laughs) Believe it or not, I will say I do not have any special guests on this project. Well, (laughs) the only special 18 APRIL 26-MAY 9, 2019

guests, you know, are me and the singin' guitar! Yes, that one's always the focal point! And speaking of focal points, you've been careful to explain that what you do in the AJ Ghent Band is, of course, influenced by the Sacred Steel, but not necessarily Sacred Steel as it's understood in the church. Is that an important distinction?

It really is. I'm doing something... You know, my core sound is definitely influenced from the Sacred Steel, from my dad and my grandad and my great uncle. But I'm doing something slightly different by playing a glass slide with a standard guitar with the strings just raised up to play slide-- which is something that wasn't done in the church and the Sacred Steel platform. It's definitely a huge difference but yet you get similar sounds. What brought in the glass slide?

I was out on the road. Believe it or not, when I first started flying to different shows, I was a little bit intimidated with security at the airport. Ahhh... that makes so much sense!

Yeah (laughs)! And there was always this question of "What's that?" I was using a steel bar at the time and... You know, other folks might not have had the trouble, but I just kinda got tired of... the question. And on top of that, I was with the Col. Bruce Hampton. We were

And I think everybody's going to love it.

playing somewhere in Minnesota and Derek Trucks came in and he sat in with us for the remainder of the last song. At the time I had the steel bar in my hand, and he didn't have his glass slide on him. So I went to my pouch-- and I always just kept one on me just for the heck of it. He picked it up and started playing with it. At that point I was just like, "I kinda like that sound a little bit." And then I started doing the same thing. It was an organic thing along with just the whole security check, TSA thing-- and to me, it just started sounding better. And I wanted it to be different too. So that's kind of how it came about. You bring up Derek Trucks, you bring up the Colonel, and I wasn't sure how I was necessarily going to ask this question. You were out with Col. Bruce Hampton doing that thing-- so I can only imagine the knowledge and terror that you must've absorbed from that experience.

(Laughs) Yeah!

And then you had the opportunity to play with so many different people. You've played with the Allman Brothers Band, you've been out with the Tedeschi Trucks Band... When you're out or you have the special guest appearances with these other fantastic musicians? Do you have the opportunity to learn and share things?

To be quite honest, I've never actually been out, even with Tedeschi Trucks-- you know, I had the privilege of just sittin' in with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theater years ago when they were still doing that run. And that was my first time and really only time outside of Derek sittin' in with the Col. Bruce. Any other time I really hadn't played with him, but it's kinda like one of those things where, even with other musicians, you talk gear in a certain way, but it's nothing that you dive in deep. At least I haven't. I'm more so just tryin' to absorb the moment and enjoy it and without getting into the "Hey man, how you doing?" type of thing, you know? I would say I shy away from that pretty often. Maybe in the future, I'll really get down to logistical gear talk and just learning. You do a lot of shows, you do a lot of festivals. Who's name are you happy to see on the bill next to yours?

Wow, that's actually a great question. I can't even say, you know? I'm happy, honestly, to see musicians out playing. I can't even say there's a favorite, but I'm excited to see live music-and there's so many great players out here, it's hard to choose from. Of course, any legends, whether it's Buddy Guy or Taj Mahal... And you're pals with Tinsley Ellis as well, another great guitar player.

Ahhh, yes! Well, of course, Tinsley. I believe we did a show with Tinsley in Macon some years back and that was fantastic. Tinley's a great, great, great guitar player and singer. He has a great thing going on. So like I said, there's so many different folks out there. I don't want to put one above the other. I'm just, again, happy and excited to see live music and folks out here playing it and really still getting it. Especially in a digital world.

On April 27th, the Atlanta based guitarist, AJ Ghent, and his family band return to The Creek Stage at the Rookery. Tickets are available now at hargraycapitoltheatre.com and in person at the Rookery.

House Talk

Flipper-- Not the Dolphin!

Hey! This is my first article for the 11th Hour and I’m really excited about it. Ever since I moved into Macon’s Intown Historic District decades ago, I have been fascinated with homes. Since then, I have crawled under, over, and all through literally thousands of houses to find horror shows and treasures. One year, I was crawling through an attic in a nearby town and found about 65 pounds of silver coins belonging to the recently deceased seller of the home-- but then there was the time that I sat down on a possum! Very stimulating for both of us. Literally, thousands of stories both fun and scary.

I have been writing and blogging for years on subjects ranging from defects that can save you and your families’ lives to conditions that might cost you tons of money if you didn’t know about them. Things like those cute furry squirrels and what they can do to your house... Did you know that they like to sharpen their teeth on the electric wiring in your attic and will strip the plastic right off the conductors? ZAP! Or that they like the taste of lead and will chew the lead flashings off your roof creating roof leak? Not to mention the squirrel poop in the attic... But that is for another day… Fast forward to Macon. A really pretty home has hit the market in the Ingleside neighborhood. It’s just been completely remodeled. Granite countertops throughout, new stainless appliances, gorgeous hardwood floors-- and for such a great price! What we are talking about is a “flipper”-- a house that was bought in foreclosure for an insanely low price and then remodeled-loaded with the goodies and re-sold. Don’t forget the home inspection! We have inspected so many of these homes over the years-- hundreds of them. Some are exactly as advertised and are amazing deals but then there are the others. Not too long ago, we were called to look one over. Fortunately, we arrived shortly after a long period of rain-- and we found the crawlspace had up to eight inches of water standing under it. Already the humidity was causing those newly refinished hardwood floors to cup and the wood decaying fungus

on the floor structure was well established… RUN! FORREST! RUN! Then there was the “flipper” with the new roof… Yes sir, a brand new architectural shingle roof installed on this charming 1920’s cottage-- a steal at $225,000! Once again the house had all the amenities-new landscaping, an amazing deck, shining antique bathrooms with a claw foot tub with gleaming new hardware… And the kitchen? To die for! Bring in the inspectors... I immediately spotted a small sag in the roof and headed for the attic which was accessed through a tiny trap door in a closet ceiling. The first thing I noticed was the absence of insulation-- none, zero, zip! After that, I was surprised to see that all of the roof structure was painted. Why would you paint the rafters and decking in an attic? The answer is that there had been a major fire in the past, and the paint was there to kill the odor of the old burned wood. The roof structure itself had several heavily charred areas where new wood had been sistered alongside like a splint for a broken leg. To top it off, the rafters were all 2”x4”-- great in the 1920’s when they had a light weight metal roof. But in subsequent decades, the metal roof had been replaced with two layers of conventional composition shingles that weighed about four times as much-- far more than two by fours could safely carry. At least two rafters were cracked from the weight, and the rest of the roof was sagging. Add an ice storm and maybe the whole roof would come down! But the house looked sooo nice! Real estate has really picked up and lots of the re-furbished foreclosures are hitting the market. Many of them are great homes but remember the great real estate commandment: Let the Buyer Beware! Once you have closed on the purchase of a house then it is all yours-- sagging structure and all. Ned Dominick has been inspecting homes in Macon, Warner Robins, and all of Central Georgia since 1978. He and his qualified inspectors have examined over 28,000 local homes. JUST TAP’D CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL The Just Tap’d Craft Beer Festival is in its fifth year and has become a staple in Downtown Macon. The festival features live music and craft beer from over 50 breweries pouring 100 different varieties in the park. Reboot Retrocade & Bar will also feature a pop-up arcade in Poplar Street Commons. I interviewed Kaitlyn Kressin to learn more about the history of the festival. Kaitlyn and her husband, Nate, visited Atlanta and fell in love with the great cultural scene filled with music, atmosphere, and craft beer. “There is literally a beer festival every quarter in Atlanta, and we wanted to bring that atmosphere to Macon,” Kaitlynn says. The Macon Beer Fest is in August, however, there was nothing going on in the Spring-- so they created the Just Tap’d Craft Beer Festival to take advantage of Spring. Kaitlyn believes that by offering more programming and events in downtown everyone wins. There are more people walking around shopping, eating in the restaurants, and increasing our tax revenue. The Just Tap’d Craft Beer Festival has doubled in size and has outgrown its original space. This year the festival has added an even greater live music component featuring Funk You, Magnolia Moon, Sean Solo, and Chip Holton. For the first time, Ocmulgee Brewpub will be hosting a Hangover Brunch from 11:00am-2:00pm featuring huevos rancheros, a breakfast burger, beer, mimosas and more. (Shameless plug: They will be featuring Just Right Ranch and Braswell jellies available for purchase at Travis Jean Emporium). The festival is from 1:00pm-5:00pm on Saturday, April 27th. A VIP ticket will get you in an hour early to enjoy more great beer! When the festival ends at 5:00pm, stay downtown for dinner or go shopping at one of the amazing retail establishments. If your business would like to be involved in next year’s festival, do not hesitate to reach out to Kaitlynn with your ideas.

CHRIS KNIGHT By Aaron Irons

A CONVERSATION WITH

It’s been nearly seven years since Chris Knight released an album, and I really shouldn’t complain. After all, he’s been releasing music as regular as the sun and moon for well over a decade-- and 2012’s Little Victories was more than enough to satisfy listeners for an extended duration. Still… When the opportunities began to appear a couple of years ago, I started asking Chris about the possibility of a new record-- and I haven’t been the only one. His answer was always the same, “It’ll shine when it shines.” So who am I to continue aggravating the man Mojo Nixon calls the “King o’ the Killin’ Song”? Just one more dedicated fan studyin’ patience and on the hunt for clues. Did I find any? Read on... AI- I spoke to Dan Baird at the tail end of last year in December. I asked him what kind of projects he had coming up, and he said he was on his way to Nashville, to work on a Chris Knight record. So that's one mystery, one piece of the puzzle solved. Tell me who else you got working on this new record. CK- My guitar player, Chris Clark... Ray Kennedy's engineering and we're finishing it

up. Right now, we're trying to get all the artwork done and just stuff like that, getting it set up to release sometime in the fall, I'm sure.

Anybody new you've worked with or some of your old favorite songwriting partners coming up on the record? A few co-writers. Me and Dan wrote a few, and me and Gary Nicholson's got at least one, maybe two on there. And an old friend of mine, we were at the same publisher, David Leone. He's on one-- but I don't want to let too much go on this record, you know? So I'm gonna keep a lot of that to myself. Well, thank you for sharing a little bit anyway. Yeah (laughs). Speaking of Chris Clark, the last time that you were here in Macon, it was just you and him doing the acoustic thing. You really looked like you were actually having a good time performing. Is that something that has come back around for you? Being able to go out and enjoy the show from the stage?

Yeah, I mean, a lot of times it depends on the crowd, you know? But, yeah, I'm enjoyin' it as much now as I ever have-- or more I've been wanting to ask you this for a long time. I've always admired the guitars you keep on stage. They're all three J-45s, I believe? When did you start that collection? I had the blonde J-45, probably, back in '94, 95 then I got a sunburst, and I had 'em paint a J-45 black for me. Oh really? At Gibson, yeah. So I got a deal with those two guitars in '96, '97. I sold the sunburst. But I got another sunburst from Gibson five or six years ago. Still got the black guitar. Playin' it a lot-- and playin' the blonde too. I play all three of 'em. I don't know that I've ever seen you play electric guitar, do you? No! No, I don't even own one. The last time we spoke, I asked if you were going to do a vinyl release for the next record and you actually, you laughed at me. So I thought I'd risk it again and ask if you had considered that this time around? Oh, there's a possibility there might be some in the future. I'm starting to come around to it a little bit. I think you'll be greatly surprised! You've had the opportunity to be very busy with your kids the last few years. Do any of them show any musical inclination? And if so, do you encourage that? You know, they've got a lot to do. We got a cheerleader, soccer player, and one in nursing school at UK. If it comes around, it'll come around. They all wanted to learn to play the guitar, but I mean, you really got to be eat up... You know, I spent all my time playing the guitar when I started, and they can't do that. I still played baseball in high school, but I packed a guitar around with me wherever I went. I played at school every chance I got-- I'd play at study hall and things like that. And there's a lot of kids doing that now-- and I hear some of them. My wife'll play this one or that one from this area that's sent her... Or she's found Youtube recordings and stuff like that. But so far, I mean my kids ain't gotten that eat up with it. And I'm fine with that (laughs)! There's a lot of music out there, you know, there's a lot of people

I wasn't the kind who's gonna sleep on people's couches and freeload for fifteen years 'til I finally (laughs) hit the big time, you know? But it's work. It's a lot o' work. As long as you have fun, that's fine. But you know, everybody says you need something to fall back on-- and you damn well need something to fall back on!

Bigger bursts, I guess. I've always done, well not always, but once I got everything picked up I was doin' eighty to a hundred shows a year. I think I probably did between eighty-five and ninety last year, and I remember one year just mostly solo acoustic, I did about 120 shows. I remember that year. I think you came here twice. Yeah, I remember playin' at the Hummingbird. out there playin'. I just don't want 'em knockin' around for years and years and years and not get nowhere in life, you know? I was pretty sure that this was what I was going to do when I started doing it. I already had a career when I quit that and started playing music and writing songs for a living. Most of your albums have a song that's just you and your guitar and The Trailer Tapes, despite your original misgivings about it being released, is still one of your most popular albums. Have you ever considered doing another record of all new material that's just you and the guitar? Yeah, I've thought about it. We'll see what comes later on. I'm thinkin' right now... I mean, I've still got some songs that I could rework a little bit and maybe have ready for another album a few years down the road. But I'm kinda feelin' like after I get all this out of the way and after the record's been out a while, I wanna start writin' pretty seriously and have another one ready as soon as I can. But I don't know when that'll be. It might be another seven years, so... Hopefully not another seven years! (Laughs) And I'm fine with that! 'Cause it'll come whenever it's ready! I didn't want to go in the studio 'til I had the songs ready, and I think we did a good job on what we got. So I'm hoping this record'll do well. It looks like you've been spending more time out on the road this last couple of years. Have you or are the dates just bigger bursts?

Yeah. I think I was with you on both those dates. I think I came right off of like a two-week run, just solo acoustic out west or northwest. Year before last, I had a lot of band shows. I put together a new band and we mighta slowed down a little bit last year, just a little as far as playing shows. We were out most of the month of January-- half of that was a full band. Now we're trying to get cranked back up and get some more band shows-- and then once the record's released all that's gonna pick up. We're shootin' for a hundred shows this year. But, you know, we'll see how that goes. I can't be just going out and breakin' even (laughs)! When you're here on May 10th, are you bringing the band or will it just be you and Chris again? It'll just be me and Chris Clark and actually, I've got five or six band shows coming up here in the next few weeks. Then the band is going to Texas and then after that, it's going to be some acoustic shows, me and Chris Clark. Maybe late May or start of June, I'll start back in with the band stuff, and then, you know, they're always bookin' stuff. So, this time in Macon, it'll just be me and Chris Clark. I won't even have my road manager with me. He usually comes out and takes care of stuff I don't want to do and sells merch. And he does a great job, but it'll just be me and Chris out there this time. I'm lookin' forward to comin'.

THE Z BEANS STORY BY SHANE BUERSTER

WHEN IT HURTS Empathy: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another; the ability to place oneself in another's shoes.

I'd like to think I am an empathetic person. But I know that you can only be as empathetic as your ability to place yourself in someone else's shoes. No matter how hard I try, I'll never be able to fully comprehend the level of desperation the people of Ecuador hold. I stay with an Ecuadorian when I am there. I eat the same food they eat. I sleep in the same non-air conditioned house that they do. I take cold showers, and I walk everywhere-- but, for me, there is always an end. There is always a return to The States. There is a return to healthy food, air-conditioned rooms, warm showers, and my vehicle. Thus, I always ask myself, “Am I empathetic or sympathetic?” Can I really claim to understand the feelings of the impoverished Ecuadorians? I'd like to think I can-- when I am standing underneath the freezing water or tossing and turning in my bed because it's 85 degrees in the house. But the real answer is no. I've always been told that you can't pick winners and losers in business. In my economics classes, I've learned capitalistic ways. I've learned the Darwinist principles-- the fittest companies survive. This power of survival is controlled by the American consumer, and it's the company's responsibility to give the consumer what they see fit. . In the poorest cities of El Oro, Ecuador, there is some incredible coffee that is produced. There are dedicated farmers who work all day to clean their farms, harvest their crops, and clean and dry the coffee. However, there is a deadly outbreak of broca. Broca is what coffee farmers call a coffee borer beetle. This beetle will bore itself through the coffee cherry and parchment and into the green coffee bean. The beetle will live inside the bean until it is eventually killed when the bean is harvested, dried, and peeled. Once you roast the broca contaminated 3030 APRIL 26-MAY 9, 2019

bean, you won't find any problem at all - you run no risk of getting sick or tasting some abnormality. However, the FDA in the United States will not allow coffee to be imported that contains broca-even if it is dead.

"You're coffee has broca. I won't be able to buy it." I took a bean out of my pocket to show him exactly what I was talking about. He took it out of my hand, examined it closely, and put it in his pocket. He said to me, "I understand."

In June of 2018, as I was packaging up a 100-pound sack of coffee that we just peeled and graded, I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was Fabricio and Arturo. They told me that a farmer was there who would like to sell his coffee. They told me it was naturally processed. Per usual, I got extremely excited. There is no greater feeling in the world than buying coffee from the hard-working farmers. It's an opportunity for me to reward them for their work over the past year.

Arturo and Fabricio finish weighing the coffee and handed the farmer his receipt. The farmer paid for the coffee that was peeled, and Arturo told him ways to alleviate the problem of broca. While it's nearly impossible to prevent it without growing Arabica varieties that are resistant to the disease, there are some distinct ways to tame it. The farmer thanked Arturo for the words of wisdom as we helped him put the sacks of coffee into the back of the taxi truck. As the farmer left, I saw the profile of his face. He was looking down, thinking about what could have been.

I sprinted up the steps of the processing facility to help the farmer unload his seven sacks of coffee. Together, we dumped the sacks into the first machine. We talked and discussed the location of his plantation, his family, and his coffee. He mentions that he and his wife are the only two workers on the farm. We walked down to the peeler to see just exactly what his coffee looked like. As I got closer and closer to the machine, I started smelling the delicious aroma of honey. I saw the bean and it was relatively clean-- there were a few defects but not many. I reached down into the tray of freshly peeled beans to grab a handful. I raised them up into the light, beaming through the window.

This is when helping hurts.

Broca... Arturo was staring at me. He saw it too. I kept my head down as the machine peeled the coffee. How was I going to tell the farmer? Fabricio turned off the machine and moved the freshly peeled sacks of coffee to the side. He wheeled the coffee over to the scale then Arturo left with him. I stood there with my head down for a moment longer, then raised it up and made my way over to the farmer. I wanted to buy the coffee. I wanted to help the farmer. But I couldn’t.

BO TALKS

THE COST OF FUTURE MOTION Some may remember a few weeks back when I mentioned the impending acquisition of a nifty little electric vehicle called a Onewheel. To the uninitiated, this is some kind of hybrid between a unicycle and an electric skateboard. They’re expensive and dangerous, yet neither of those things slowed my proverbial roll-- or float as they call it in the Onewheel community. It arrived on a Monday. I found it only took a day to get the hang of the basics and by Tuesday, I was riding up and down our street with increasing confidence. By Wednesday, I used it to make the approximate mile ride commute to work. I was having so much fun, I even took the long way home just to get in some extra ride time. By that evening, I just had to show and tell someone about this amazing new hobby. I was “all in” after only three days. It was there, at one of my closest friend’s home, that I came to a very painful reality: I didn’t have near the mastery-- or even basic fear and respect for this contraption-- that I thought I did. After giving my buddy a turn, I decided I

would show him what a seasoned rider who had owned the thing for a full 72 hours could do. I mean, I had already logged a whopping 9 miles of around town cruising! It was approximately 9:00 PM and pitch-black dark in front of his house as I hopped on. In the blink of an eye, I jumped from 5 to 10 miles per hour then equally as quickly from 10 to 15. Thanks to the handy Onewheel iPhone app, I can tell you it was at precisely 17.7 miles per hour that I failed to notice the pushback indicating I needed to slow down and as the board performed an immediate and exquisite nosedive, I took flight. I landed shoulder first, only mildly scraping an elbow and an ankle. Jumping back up, I assured my friend that I was ok. At least I thought I was ok. After a brief pat-down of my persons, I discovered an alarming protuberance where my left clavicle was supposed to be. I was certain this deformed object trying to escape from inside my fragile ginger skin was some type of heinous fracture, and before long the emergency room confirmed my suspicions. I walked out with a sling, a prescription for

hardcore pain meds, and a wicked x-ray. A week later the orthopedic specialist informed me the break was too complicated to attempt surgery, and so here I sit under the influence of a steady diet of Percocet, making regrettable Amazon purchases, and watching the Jason Statham flop-buster, The Meg, for a second time-- waiting on this collarbone to heal so I can finally get back on my beloved Onewheel. Yes, despite numerous offers from people eager to relieve me of this sophisticated injury machine, and much to the chagrin of certain friends and family, I’m not done with it just yet. As Bob Ross once said, “As long as you’re learning, you’re not failing.” Luckily, with over 200 bones in the human body, I’ve got plenty of time to get really good at not failing. Bo Walker is a local writer, who sincerely apologizes for anything he might say on social media over the next few weeks. He is bored and medicated, which is perhaps even more dangerous than being on a Onewheel.

SONGWRITING CAN OFTEN BE VIEWED AS A SOLITARY PURSUIT FUELED BY INSPIRATION AND NECESSITY. FOR GARY LOURIS, FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE JAYHAWKS, IT HASN’T NECESSARILY BEEN THE CASE, BE IT WITHIN HIS BAND OR AS A KIND OF SONGSMITH-FOR-HIRE. It’s clearly reflected in his group’s latest outing, last year’s Back Roads and Abandoned Motels. With the exception of two new songs, Louris was the lone songwriter on nine of the 11 cuts. The remaining songs were remakes of tunes the Ohio native co-wrote with and for a number of artists, including the Dixie Chicks, Ari Hest, Jakob Dylan, Carrie Rodriguez, and Wild Feathers. Louris credits newest Jayhawks member John Jackson for the direction this latest project took. “It was the idea of John Jackson, who we got to know when some of our records started getting reissued through Sony Legacy,” Louris explained in a recent phone interview. “He became a really great friend and was responsible for a lot of things, like hooking us up with Ray Davies and all these other things. John started out as a friend and somebody we worked with and it turned out that he’s a huge Jayhawks fan and a really good player who ended up sitting in with us whenever he could. He eventually became part of the band. “He’d been looking to do something with us and he wanted to tell the world I was an underappreciated songwriter or something to that effect,” Louris said with a laugh. “We just compiled a bunch of songs and certain ones rose to the top. We decided to record them and put the Jayhawks stamp on them. When you write a song with an artist, they take it and do with it what they will. I have to say that I’m thrilled with everybody’s take on these songs. But sometimes, you want to do them your own way and have a little more control over things. So we didn’t vary too much from the original arrangements because they already had a good part of me in them already. Just by us doing them, they became Jayhawks songs.”

JUST BY US DOING THEM, THEY BECAME JAYHAWKS SONGS.

The result of this musical experiment makes it one of the band’s strongest records, no mean feat given the fact that the band has been knocking around since 1985. Back Roads opens with “Come Cryin’ To Me”, a cut from Dixie Chick Natalie Maines’ 2013 solo debut Mother, and features Jayhawk Karen Grotberg applying sensuous phrasing to this horn-kissed gem that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Sheryl Crow album. Other highlights include “Gonna Be A Darkness”, a mandolin-soaked ballad sung by drummer Tim O’Reagan, originally co-written by Louris with Jakob Dylan for a True Blood soundtrack, and “Backwards Women”, a previously unreleased collaboration with Wild Feathers that has an early ‘70s Faces/ Stones vibe. It’s one of Louris’ favorite songs on the album. A pair of songs originally recorded by the Dixie Chicks-- the harmony-enveloped “Everybody Knows” and the quasi-forlon “Bitter End”-- also resonate with the kind of substance and heft fans have come to expect from the upper reaches of the Jayhawks’ back canon. Louris is quite pleased with the album, particularly given how the band has been cutting back on touring and focusing more on hitting the recording studio. It’s a decision that’s also yielded opportunities for the Jayhawks to serve as a back-up band on studio projects by Kinks frontman and main songwriter Ray Davies and good friend Wesley Stace. For

the latter, a good friend of Louris’, it was a chance for the band to stylistically stretch their legs on the 2017 outing dubbed Wesley Stace’s John Wesley Harding. “I met Wes in the late ‘80s. We played some shows and he’s truly become one of my best friends. I’ve gone to visit his mum, we’ve hung out a lot and stayed in touch all the time. He’s a really talented guy, a great writer, novelist and an all-around, smart and great person to be around,” Louris said. “We had a lot of fun and did this real ‘70s soft rock thing in maybe two or three days in a rehearsal space in Minneapolis. We ended up having a lot of fun.” The Jayhawks also played the same role for Davies on a pair of his solo albums, 2017’s Americana and last year’s sequel, Our Country: Americana Act II. Inspired by Davies’ 2013 book, Americana: The Kinks, The Riff, The Road: The Story, these outings found the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer looking for a group that could help translate his love affair with America and its culture. It was new Jayhawk Jackson who made the connection between Davies and his bandmate. It also was a dream come true for Louris, an avowed Kinks fan (“Ray is one of my heroes and somebody who I always admired since I was young. I was a huge Kinks fan and probably identified more with them than the Beatles or the Stones.”) “[Ray] was looking for a group situation and didn’t want to get a bunch of different

hotshot musicians to put in a room. He really wanted a band, and I think that he misses some of that camaraderie of the Kinks and I think he still is kind of a ‘band’ guy,” Louris recalled. “So John said the Jayhawks would be perfect and we were flown over from Spain to London for a couple of days to see if it would work. It became more like a getting-to-know-each-other kind of thing. It went well and he wanted to do more and more and we’ve become friends. Musically, it worked, especially with [Davies bandleader] Bill [Shanley] in there also. It was a great experience” One of the upsides that came out of these sessions was greater involvement by the other Jayhawks, specifically Grotberg and the rhythm section. It’s a situation reflected on Back Roads, and one that Louris hopes will play out when the band hits the studio again. “I think the model I would like to have for the next record is to open it up a little bit, as we have in the past, where people can write and bring in their own songs. I’d like to step back a little bit and have Karen and Tim [be represented more],” he said. “I want to see what they’ve got and we’ll try and collaborate if we can. If they have some songs, we’ll make it a little bit more of a collective than it’s been. Marc Perlman has written some of the best Jayhawks songs and co-written some of the best Jayhawks songs there are. Tim has shown that he can write great and I know that Karen has songs. So that’s what we’re hoping for.”

THE JAYHAWKS ARE SET TO HEADLINE THE 26TH ANNUAL BLIND WILLIE MUSIC FESTIVAL IN THOMSON, GA ON SATURDAY, MAY 4TH! FOR TICKETS AND MORE INFORMATION, VISIT BLINDWILLIE.COM.

In the South, we have rockabilly-- that particular blend of rock meets blues meets country that defines music from the Southern states. Over the past 45 years, Los Lobos have taken rockabilly and infused a certain Tex Mex flavor– melting country, folk, blues, soul and chicano influences into one pot to create a beautiful blend of musical and cultural influences. Formed in L.A. in 1974, Los Lobos have close to 30 albums to their name-- including studio and live albums as well as a couple of movie soundtracks. I went back to listen to 1987’s By the Light of the Moon after playing “Shakin’ Shakin’ Shakes” on 100.5 The X last week. This track is roots rock at its finest, peppy and upbeat enough to make you want to dance while incorporating stop-youin-your-tracks riffs and bluesy harmonica. The album as a whole is a completely eclectic mix of songs, all enjoyable, but varying widely in sound and influence. The album’s opening song, “One Time One Night” is straight up American country while a later track, “Prenda Del Alma,” is a Spanish love song. Tracks like “All I Wanted to Do Is Dance” and “Set Me Free (Rosalie)” incorporate swinging saxophone while “My Baby Is Gone” is soulful and bluesy. Born in the late ’80s, By the Light of the Moon transcends that decade and should be a staple for anyone who enjoys Americana and roots rock. In my opinion, it’s the perfect album to put on for a spring barbeque or a float down the river.

The launch of 100.5 The X, sent me digging out CD’s and songs I hadn’t listened to in years, but also TV shows (Daria, anyone?) and movies like Empire Records and the perhaps lesser known Drop Dead Gorgeous. To this day, if someone brings out a camera at the holidays, my sister and I quip, “ Are we on Cops?”, a refrain from this 1999 spoof. In the film, a documentary team visits Mount Rose, Minnesota for an annual beauty pageant that includes Kirsten Dunst, Denise Richards, Brittany Murphy, and Amy Adams. Kirstie Alley plays Richards’ mom and wealthy pageant coordinator, while Ellen Barkin and Allison Janney are best friends raising Dunst in the town’s trailer park. You get a feel for smalltown Minnesota from pageant assistant Mindy Sterling (of Austin Powers’ fame) delivering lines like, “We’re all God-fearing folk, and you won’t find a back room in our video store!” while Dunst tells the crew she is competing in the pageant to get out of town because, “guys get out of Mount Rose all the time, you know, for hockey scholarships…or prison.” When someone begins killing off pageant contestants, no one seems concerned that high school students are dropping like flies. Dunst and the documentary crew begin looking for answers, but ultimately, the plot is overshadowed by satirical takes on beauty standards, small-town life, and the true meaning of family and friendship. And bonus-the soundtrack is popping with ‘90s alternative from The Feelers, Hot Sauce Johnson, Tim Carroll, and Joan Jett & The Black Hearts!

C.D. WRIGHT’S POETRY

In Wright’s collection titled, The Poet, the Lion, Talking Pictures, El Farolito, a Wedding in St. Roch, the Big Box Store, the Warp in the Mirror, Spring, Midnights, Fire & All, you really get a bit of everything. Not just in the title either, which reminds me of the wardrobe to Narnia. I like this collection because it isn’t standard poems blocked one after the other. Really, it sometimes reads like a fairytale, sometimes an encyclopedia, other times a deranged journal. So much material is neatly packed into her work that, in another metaphor, it’s like a “Word a Day” challenge. Wright’s outlook is investigative and sly, wary of the world while all-out embracing it at the same time. She says strange things like, “One can truck on over to that enormous rock and rock it out of the hole it is beginning to create for itself. I rock, you rock, one trucks.” So this is a poet to read sparingly or something new to pick up a few times a week. Most poetry should be read a little at a time-- there’s only so much insanity one can handle. -Madelyn Rueter

4. DOCUMENTARY ONE STRANGE ROCK

I love documentaries and not just for the background noise or the expertise I imagine I gain. I love them because I can essentially traverse the globe without leaving the house or spending money. And when I do leave the house, I travel with a brain full of facts (useless or not). One Strange Rock is about the fine mechanics of our earth-- such as the salt storms from the desert of Danakil journeying across the Atlantic to the Amazon, the 100 lightning strikes per second (and one billion a day), the blankets of clouds brewing this electricity across earth, and all of this activity seen from space. Will Smith hosts the series, accompanied by a group of astronauts who can tell you that the Earth is a grand, spinning miracle. It’s hard to describe documentaries like this in 200 words, but here’s a fun fact: one tree = enough oxygen for two people. One fireball crashing into our atmosphere = enough energy to match ten atomic bombs. Here’s another fact: Will Smith is an adorable goofball and should narrate all earth documentaries henceforth. -Madelyn Rueter

With a new album, Living Mirage, coming out May 17th and a tour through the end of the year, The Head and The Heart visited Macon for a welcoming, rowdy crowd. I’ve been listening to a handful of their songs since high school, memories of driving my first car, moving away, and falling in love attached. Seeing them live brought back all of those feelings and proved that this band lives up to the gravitas of their songs. Carl Broemel opened the show with his slide guitar and saxophone, hypnotizing the crowd with shoe-gazey loops. After ending his set with a tribute to Tom Petty’s “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” which of course got everyone rocking out, The Head and The Heart took the stage, jumping right into their punchy music that brings people together. The Head and The Heart is mostly an indie pop band, but they add a folk element with the violin addition and their general wanderlust theme. The drummer often played with maracas instead of sticks while Jon, the lead singer, whispered into the mic, perfectly executing their vagabond tone. The six members of The Head and The Heart shared the stage well, revolving in their own dimensions but performing as one. After playing a strong set but skipping their most popular song, “Rivers and Roads,” the crowd screamed for an encore and stomped the ground in unison. Jonathon returned and teased us for a few more songs until finally allowing us our favorite hymn. Released in 2011, “Rivers and Roads” off of their first album remains their most popular song and stands as an anthem for all travelers and wanderers. Afterward, our concert crowd trickled out of the theatre with lines like “You’re already home where you feel love” stuck in our heads and hearts. -Madelyn Rueter 11thHourOnline.com 41 41
