WHAT’S INSIDE July 6–19, 2018 // Volume 18, Issue 384
I saw a man slap his daughter in the grocery store today because she was hungry. My wife and I used to sit around on the porch, surely and not-so-humbly proclaiming what kind of parents we'd be—once we decided to have a child. The concept of spanking was discussed. My parents did, hers had not. If I was doing something I wasn't supposed to, I was gonna get popped—at home, in public... Yeah, I could say things were different back then (and they were), but my mother never punished me for being a child. I certainly wasn't knocked around for being hungry. A few hours ago, I pretended not to watch two parents, mother and father (presumably) threaten their kid after she complained multiple times about being hungry. She never “talked back” or “threw a fit”, and because it was the grocery store, I kept running into them. If the girl was singing, mother shut up'd. If she was hungry, father slapped. I didn't do anything. You get all manner of advice when you're expecting. Even non-parents (like we used to be) have two cents to offer. My friends Baby and Kevin Sprott gave me the best, though. They simply said, “Enjoy your children.” I've embraced and relied on that advice since my daughter was born nearly two years ago. There's not a gassy, teething sleepless night or a funky, hardcore horror of a diaper that has made me see her as anything less than the most beautiful thing that's ever happened to me. She's got a temper, and she doesn't know patience—but it's my job to teach her that. I wanted to teach that guy in the Kroger a lesson. So, why didn't I? I carry around a lot of fear these days. It seems that I earn more every morning and night. I worry about the power bill and the mortgage, the tires and the brakes, was that there yesterday, am I drinking too much, eating too much junk food, have I told my wife I love her, the grass needs cut, is that the price of milk, did I lock the back door, am I out of flour cause I wanna fry chicken, am I eating too much fried food—and do I say something to a parent who abuses children? I know the answer, knew it when I did nothing. The bad father of this tale wasn't the one who struck his child... it was the one who ignored it. No matter who you are or what you do—butcher, baker, candlestick maker, magazine editor, or president of a nation—don't punish a child for crying, find out why and fix it.

Ohhhh, the questions, and complaints, and sheer fear of the dreaded parking meters! Sure, I’ve had my concerns, takin’ my fair share of jabs at the new parking directive downtown—but what’s actually happening? I got the number for Ben Steffen, the man Lanier Parking cherry picked to manage downtown Macon. Ben got to town two months ago from Louisville, KY and hit the pavement running. His office is just down the street from the Creek, and Ben offered to come up and meet me. I never considered parking management as a “thing”, but Ben’s been at it for ten years. From small towns to growing cities to one of the biggest sporting events in the country, Ben Steffen is familiar with the variety of problems the businesses, employees, residents, and visitors face downtown. I found him enthusiastic and willing to discuss any and all of my questions during our initial meeting. What started as a few planned, funny questions turned into a fairly informative morning. He’s also aware of how he and Lanier parking are being perceived. Bottom line—something has to be and is about to be done about the parking issue in downtown Macon. It’s not just meters on poles either. Ben Steffen and his team are cleaning up parking decks and designing a system that’s capable of evolving, growing with Macon. You keep up with us, and we’ll keep up with Ben!

HAT'S THE BIGGEST “BOOGIE MAN” OR MYTH PEOPLE W HAVE ABOUT THE NEW PARKING MANAGEMENT IN DOWNTOWN MACON? The biggest myth that we have is that there are not enough spaces in downtown to accommodate all the demand. In reality there are more empty spaces in all of the garages than there are total spaces on the city streets. By creating a fully functioning parking system we hope to better utilize the inventory of spaces for their best use with on-street spaces available for short term parking and turnover and the garages used by long-term parking, employees, residents, and hotel visitors.

OU AND YOUR TEAM HAVE BEEN PARTICIPATING IN THE Y “I AM MACON” WORKSHOP. WHY WAS THAT IMPORTANT? It is essential that we recognize our place within the community and work to embrace that becoming the "face of PARK Macon-Bibb". Our employees will be ambassadors to the downtown area and an extra welcoming presence on the street. Parking is the first and last impression of all the shops and restaurants in downtown, and it is critical that we represent them well.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'VE NOTICED, BUT WE'RE PRETTY SERIOUS ABOUT OUR MUSIC HERE IN MACON—WHAT'S YOUR “PARKING” PLAYLIST? Growing up I was a huge band nerd. I played trombone in the Concert band, jazz band and marching band. I was also drum major of the marching and pep bands. A long way of saying, music is important to me too. So my playlist is going to be somewhat eclectic depending on the day and my mood. I might be listening to Jason Aldean or Blake Shelton, but you wouldn't be hard pressed to catch me listening to Ella Fitzgerald or Count Basie either.

ANIER PARKING IS CURRENTLY MANAGING TWO L PARKING DECKS DOWNTOWN (440 MULBERRY STREET & 420 POPLAR STREET). ONE OF THE MAIN CONCERNS VOICED BY DOWNTOWN EMPLOYEES IS THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THE DECKS. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS, AND HOW IS LANIER PARKING ADDRESSING THE SITUATION? Safety and Security is a major concern for me personally, and my company. Ironically, the topic of safety was actually brought to my attention by my wife early on in my parking career. Despite not having any incidents parking in garages in any city in which I have worked, she pointed out to me that some garages can be "scary." There is a real and perceived bias against parking garages in pop culture. Watch any crime drama, for example, NCIS (my favorite), CSI, Law & Order (her favorite), and there is always some sort of crime (violent, petty etc.) occurring in or around parking garages. The sad reality is that garages are not the only place that these crimes occur, but it is easy to feel nervous in garages, as they can be dark in certain areas or even dirty under the wrong management. To combat this, I and the PARK Macon-Bibb team will be doing a lot of things in Macon, but the first steps we are working on consist of cleaning up the garages, reducing the amount of trash and surface debris, along with trying to get a handle on the issue(s) we are experiencing with tagging. We are also working on lighting conditions in some of the garages, as well as getting the parking stall lines repainted. A garage that is well lit and appears well-maintained goes a long way towards subconsciously making a person feel safer. On a related note, our firm does a wonderful job of assisting our clients' general population(s) in transitional housing situations. In Macon, for example, our team is working with the people at Daybreak to create a series of educational classes to further assist those individuals with their soft skills. How do you get a job in today's market and just as importantly how do you keep that job.
OU NEARLY PASSED ON MACON, BUT YOUR HOBBY Y CLINCHED THE DEAL—WHAT HAPPENED? So I am a huge Star Wars nerd, especially when it pertains to tabletop gaming. Several months ago Lanier approached me about coming to Macon and leaving a position that I had held for nearly a decade with another parking company. Part of the interview process had me come to Macon and see what I thought of the city. An individual has to have priorities, so I had to find my comic book/gaming shop. If I was going to relocate my family away from our home I needed to find somewhere to hide from them every once in a while, right? I am happy to say that I found an excellent comic book and gaming shop with wonderful gaming communities right here in Macon.

I LEARNED YOU'RE A BIG STAR WARS FAN. WHAT'S YOUR MOST PRIZED PIECE OF MEMORABILIA? My poor wife! On our honeymoon on a cruise in the Caribbean, I totally geeked out. There was a shop in Jamaica called "That Yoda Guy" I managed to get a picture shaking hands with the gentleman who designed the Yoda Muppet for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I also got the coolest piece of memorabilia that I have ever had in a story board drawing with a signed page from the Return of the Jedi script framed beside it.

I DIDN'T REALIZE ALL THE DIFFERENT PARKING VIOLATIONS THAT WILL BE CONSIDERED UNDER THE NEW MANAGEMENT PROGRAM. CAN YOU ELABORATE ON SOME OF THE MORE COMMON INFRACTIONS, AND WHERE PEOPLE CAN FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH PROPER PARKING POLICY? So, the most common is always for non-payment of meters. There will also be citations written for vehicles that stay parked in the same space for more than 3 hours, pulling into a space going the wrong direction (backing into a pull-in space), parking on a sidewalk, parking in loading zones and several others violations. I believe we have a link to those on the PARK Macon-Bibb website, and if we do not my team and I will work with the web developers to publish such information.

ELL ME ABOUT THE MOST FUN YOU'VE T EVER HAD IN PARKING MANAGEMENT? Believe it or not no one grows up dreaming of being the "Parking Guy." Those of us that end up in this industry fall into it at some point in our lives and tend to stay. I have been very blessed in having a lot of very good clients in my life, but the thing that I am most proud of, and definitely had the most fun doing is that in my prior position, I had a chance to run all the parking for Churchill Downs. My single favorite moment was during Derby 143 week; I was able to be a part of a parking redesign that required I be on the rooftop during both the Oaks and Derby races. That Oaks day was particularly nasty as it had rained all day and the temperature was hovering around 38. It was all worth it though, as I have a video on my phone of the Oaks Race from the rooftop of Churchill Downs.

HAT'S AN ASPECT OF YOUR JOB THAT W WOULD SURPRISE MOST PEOPLE? The creativity that parking professionals have to have. When I got into parking I thought it was pretty black and white, "take a car, put it into a parking space", but there is so much more to it than that. The balancing of interests and the desire to truly make a difference in a downtown landscape are some of the reasons that I get out of bed every day. continued on page 14 11thHourOnline.com 13

We try to make it look easy, and in a well managed system people really don't even think about parking as a factor.

I WAS CURIOUS ABOUT THE ACTUAL ENFORCEMENT OF THE NEW PARKING DIRECTIVES—WHAT'S THE TIMELINE, AND WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE EXPECT IN THE COMING MONTHS? We are working to get the meter installation completed in the first part of July. We were actually delayed at the Canadian border due to import export issues, but we are working with the UDA to get all meters in as quickly as possible. Once they are installed and working we plan to take a more lenient approach during the first month working to educate people on why they would have received a citation and how they could have avoided the citation either through payment or long term parking in a parking deck.
YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPERPOWER TO USE IN IF PARKING MANAGEMENT—WHAT WOULD IT BE? WHAT WOULD BE THE MOST HELPFUL? So I am a Marvel guy, not DC. So I have got to go to that Universe, and I wish that I had Spidey Senses. I really wish that I had the ability to know what was going to happen before it happened. That way I could always be on-site before we ran into an obstacle instead of reacting to things after they occur.

That quaint city in northeast Georgia is entertaining any season, and I always find something new. A few weeks ago was AthFest, the yearly summer music and arts festival. It also happened to be my mom’s birthday. So two birds, one stone (or 3 rather). Celebrate mom, visit my brother, and enjoy some killer music. We started our trek Friday night. Unfortunately, a storm came through before we got to town, pushing the music schedule back a couple of hours. You know what they say though, “When in Athens…”, or something like that. Instead, we grabbed a bite at go-to Athens Tex-Mex restaurant Aqua Linda in Normaltown. With some of the largest burritos you’ll ever eat, it's a great spot to start a night out on the town. We were taking it relatively easy, though, so we just enjoyed the walkability for some food and drinks. Now, to the real fun that can be had in Athens! Woke up early Saturday, got some coffee in our system, made our way downtown! AthFest is great because you can get out early and enjoy the art before the craziness and music. Saturday afternoons in Athens are always in full swing by lunch time. So, we check out the vendors, and then its on to Creature Comforts for
some of the best Georgia beers around. Most people know about Tropicalia, Athena, etc. You should try something different when you go. We grabbed pints of their limited releases “Illuminating the Fog”(IPA) and “Get Artistic”(Tart Wheat Beer), both fantastic, easy-drinking beers. We kick back and get to hear T. Hardy Morris play a few off of his brand new album. After that it’s on to Little King’s Shuffle club—a cool, hip, and surprisingly calm bar. I’d never been there, so it was definitely a treat. We saw DEGA, an Indie/ Pop/Electronic husband and wife duo playing catchy hooks with great melodies. Those beautiful harmonies rounded out a perfect, relaxing and fun set in the a/c. Alright, we needed to eat something before the heat really settled. Trappeze Pub is one of my favorite places in Athens—casual with good food, one of the best rotating beer selections I’ve ever come across, and an extremely knowledgeable staff. It's a must when you visit Athens. We relaxed with a few more beers and some pub food (with a twist). We wrap up, and AthFest is in full swing. If you haven’t experienced AthFest before, it's basically Bragg Jam on steroids. There are several free outdoor stages during the day followed by a late-night club-crawl. We caught Wanderwild on the mainstage—a mix of indie-pop and rock that's fun to watch, but they're also an amazingly tight band with well thought out lyrics and a generally pleasing sound. After that we passed the KidsStage and saw The Drapes. Let me tell you, these kids
are GREAT! I wouldn't typically be able to say that about a four-piece made up of 14-16 year olds, but I digress. The lead singer was engaging, the drummer played with the excitement of Dave Grohl, and the lead guitar played 3-chord power pop reminiscent of early Weezer. We watched those kids rock out then decided to take a little break. After a couple hours rest, we made our way back to the mainstage for the headliner. Family and Friends is the epitome of pop rock in all the best ways, with more energy than almost anyone I’ve ever seen live. With musical talent and entertainment value to match it, you never want to miss an opportunity to see them (And guess what? You have the chance to in just a few weeks at Bragg Jam!) What a way to spend a Saturday! Sunday, packed up, made our way back to Macon. But not before we have brunch at The Grit! Now, for all you meat lovers out there, this is a vegetarian restaurant—but don’t fret. With some of their menu options you’ll never know that you’re getting your herbivore on. The Grit has a wide variety of breakfast burritos, sandwiches, pancakes, grits, and hell, even biscuits and gravy... you’ll never even realize you’re being “hip”! Just make sure you get there early or you might have a little bit of a wait. So there you have it! 36 hours of fun, food, music, and booze! Pulling onto Macon Hwy, looking in the rearview mirror, I thought “See you in September, Athens. Go Dawgs!” Although a lot of what we did involved AthFest, remember Athens is fun at any time. Trust me when I say this: Check out Creature Comforts for some of the best beers Georgia has to offer, grab some food and drinks at Trappeze (make sure to get the rosemary and garlic fries with a side of raspberry ketchup & roasted garlic aioli), and definitely don’t skip The Grit on your way out of town!

SPACE Everyone here at the 11th Hour was extremely excited to hear about Space Force. While the current administration in Washington, DC has, at times, been a dividing and polarizing...ahem...force, we at the 11th Hour find this new directive inspiring. It's been seven decades since B.H. Brown immortalized “Sam the Beggar Dog” in the now iconic Nu-Way Weiners painting. From coast to coast and around the world, the image of a boy, his dog and his hot dog is recognized as uniquely “Macon”.

For the first time ever, Nu-Way reached out to the community with this amazing question: Is your dog the Nu-Dog? Over 250 dogs were submitted by Central Georgia owners—massive Great Danes to mini-dachshunds, jowled bulldogs to saggy-baggy basset hounds. There were puppies and poses, pointers and Pomeranians—and it was really, really tough... but nine finalists were selected with a winner to be decided by Nu-Way fans all over Central Georgia. More than 5000 votes have been tallied. Nu-Way, the 11th Hour, and 100.9 The Creek are proud to announce the Nu Dog of 2018-Cecilia! Cecilia is a year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. “She thought her name was ‘She's so cute’ until she was about 5 months old, and would perk up every time someone on the street would say it.” says Devin Atkins, Cecilia’s owner. “The 3 things she's always been told are, ‘She's so Cute, ‘So Soft’, and ‘So Sweet’! And she's an excellent swimmer!” The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is known for its friendly nature and pleasant energy, and according to Devin, “Cecilia loves Nu-Way Weiners!” She even lives on Cotton Avenue, here in Macon—home of the original Nu-Way! “We do the 3 for 2 Special—two chili slaw, all the way with onions, and Cecilia gets a plain.” When Cecilia isn’t feasting on a Nu-Way weiner or crunching on that Famous Flakey Ice (Devin calls ‘em water cookies) she enjoys chasing ping pong balls and wrasslin’ with her plush duck. Cecilia and Devin will receive $500 cash, $500 Nu-Way Bucks, a 100.9 The Creek prize package, and a print of Cecilia as the new “Nu-Dog”. About the artist Kelly Sullivan Joyner moved to Warner Robins, Georgia in 1975 at the age of 12. Although born in Tennessee, she considers herself a Georgia girl. Kelly majored in fine arts in college and in 1989 was trained in the FBI method of forensic composite art. Since then she has completed about a hundred composites of suspects. After an almost fifteen year hiatus from art, Kelly made a move to Macon and jump started her creativity. She says, "There is definitely something in the water here!" 11thHourOnline.com 19

Admit it. You would, in fact, go a long way for a NuWay—and you’re not alone. Maconites and Central Georgians have been lining up to enjoy the secret recipe chili sauce and signature, red hot dogs for over a century. In fact, it’s almost an obsession. “That’s what’s humbling, the cult following!” gushes Nu-Way President and co-owner, Jim Cacavias. “We don’t have a thousand stores, but we ship a thousand shirts all over the country every day. It’s humbling!” Most folks don’t need a menu either. Jim beams with pride when he notes, “People come in… in a trance! They know what they want.” Spiros Dermatas is Nu-Way’s Vice-President and co-owner. He notes that die-hards are often greeted by a staff that already knows their favorite order before they reach the counter. It’s tough to beat the chili slaw dog, all the way with mustard and onions. Pair that legend with an insulated cup of that Famous Flaky ice topped off with
Coca-Cola… Why is it so good? “We dial up the syrup and test the temperature to get it just right,” confides Jim. “We have spoiled our customers rotten!” Laughing, Spiros agrees. “Sure! That’s how you keep them coming back for 102 years!” Ever wondered about the mystery of the misspelled “weiner”? The original storefront window on Cotton Ave was hand-lettered, and a careless painter made NuWay the “Best Weiner In Town”. Jim and Spiros explain, “Our fathers and uncles decided, in the mid fifties, that it would be bad luck to change it. NICOTINE WAR JOURNAL: DAY SEVEN
(To be read in the voice of Nicolas Cage, Vin Diesel, or Clint Eastwood) Zero seven hundred. “Well, I’m awake. I guess that’s a start.” I think to myself as I sit up in bed, stiff and sore. The afternoon workouts were helping with the cravings, but my body is in shock from the sudden blasts of exercise. I surveythe bedroom. It looks the same as when I went to sleep. Guess that’s another night without sleep-smoking. Not that I’ve ever done that before, but if this plan works, anything is possible. “I’ve got to be ready. Stay vigilant.” I repeat those words aloud, which wakes my wife. She rolls over and away from me, mumbling something about over-dramatic monologues, but I don’t have time to decrypt her riddles. I’ve got a date with coffee. Zero seven-thirty. I find myself rushing through my morning mug, which feels like only half of what it used to be. Laurel no Hardy. Siegfried sans Roy. My blessings... without the rains down in Africa. I don’t even finish the last couple of sips, they’re cold, forgotten as I frantically navigate a dozen different apps on my phone. I let out a sigh, “This whole world is going to hell in a handbasket, and we’re watching it burn like ancient Rome.” About this time my wife walks into the kitchen, “You mean Nero,” she says. I’m not sure why she wants to bring up the Matrix, but she recommends I check for messages from an app that helps track and assist with quitting smoking. What’ll they think of next? Zero seven-thirty-three. It turns out, I do have an important notification. My senses of smell and taste should be back to running at full capacity, not to mention a boost in overall power levels. I take a deep breath and hold it, analyzing the air, while flexing my biceps and trying to see my reflection in the front of the oven. I catch a glimpse of my wife trying to sneak a picture of me. She’s probably impressed by all my new powers, though I’m not sure I notice any changes quite yet. Thirteen hundred hours. I'm walking into the grocery store when the powers hit—but not like I expected. They say that our sense of smell is the strongest, and if you smelled what I smell, you’d say it too. The grocery store lobby is a volatile mix on a good day, but on this day, a child has recently experienced an explosive bowel, which in turn caused another shopper to empty his stomach. I’ll spare you the more graphic details of my newfound senses, but I detect what might be best described as a rotten two-piece meal from Captain D’s. This war is fought with a thousand daily battles, and though some victories are sweeter than others, some stink. I’ve got to be ready. Stay vigilant. Fanelli BY AARON IRONS e was headed for New Orleans, but Detroit native Gino Fanelli got sidetracked and fell in love with Lookout Mountain. Armed with a vintage philosophy and timeless sense of rhythm, Gino considers all of America his canvas and stage. Whether leading a jazz trio or soloing under a snap-brim fedora, Gino Fanelli brings an old-school, jumpin’, N’awlin’s vibe to any stage anywhere. On July 13th, Gino Fanelli comes to Macon to perform a free show at the Society Garden.

You've got an eclectic, exciting style, Gino—where did all the pieces of your musical persona come from? My mother. She would play old records when I was very young. Of the likes of Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima, Dean Martin and such. What's on your turntable at home right now? A rare 78 record of Django Rhinehardt, the French, gypsy, jazz guitar player. Tell me about that big, sunburst archtop you play? It’s a 1947 Kay archtop. One of the very few carved archtops. That guitar is the main guitar I play, my workhorse. It has quite a bit of patina. What's missing in contemporary music? Soul. Recording all live music and not using autotune for vocals. Also people do way too much overdubbing.
I know you do many special renditions of a variety of songs—what's something no one expects, the strangest song you do? The strangest song… “If I Only Had a Brain” from The Wizard of Oz. Tell me about your band, the Jalopy Brothers-are they coming with you to Macon? Unfortunately, the Jalopy Brothers will not be in Macon. They are based in Detroit. Shannon Wade on upright bass & Matt Collar on trumpet. They are fantastic musicians, and sometimes tehy go on the road with me. We have a lot of banter on stage which makes for a great show. I truly enjoy playing with them. How do you describe what you do to someone who's only ever heard 21st Century music? It is a mixture of golden era jazz music. A lot of it is based off New Orleans music mixed with my Detroit roots. We label it , ”Where Detroit meets New Orleans.”

SOMEWHERE BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL, SOCIAL DISTORTIONThere's a legend around Mike Ness, lead singer and founding member of Social Distortion. It extends from those early do-or-die years in the West Coast punk scene (if you're a young musician and you take nothing else from this, watch Another State of Mind). There's also the outlaw aspect of his persona, the music he chooses to make—undeniably punk with a hillbilly bloodline. With his worn, leather voice, Mike Ness can growl out hardcore anthems or barroom laments with equal credibility. He believes every word, every time—and so do we. In 1988, Social Distortion released Prison Bound, a clanking, gritty, searing tattoo that, for me, heralded the arrival of Mike Ness as punk music's Man In Black. Over the next decade, Ness and Social D would release three thick, genre defying albums, including what many consider to be their pinnacle, 1992's Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell. SBH&H is the album Johnny, Luther, and Marshall might've made if they'd come together on the Sunset Strip in 1984 instead of Memphis in '54. There's thunder & white lightnin' in the opening track, “Cold Feeling”, while “Bad Luck” kicks the album nearly into full-throttle rockabilly. Mike Ness's throaty vocals are perfect and without irony on Jimmy Work's country classic, “Making Believe” and his own beer-soaked honky tonker, “This Time Darlin'”. Other than the Clash's rendition of “I Fought The Law”, there may not be a better melding of punk and rockabilly than Social D's “When She Begins”. I'll make this statement, and defend it with my fists—Merle Haggard should have cut “99 to Life”. Hell, just writing this, I'm imagining the Highway Men doing nearly every track on SBH&H! Listen yourself, and tell me you don't hear Johnny, Kris, Waylon, and Willie singing “Sometimes I Do”. Go ahead, I'll wait. —AARON IRONS

CANTALOUPE ICE CREAM Summer has arrived. The muggy, hazy, lazy days of summer. We all want to beat the heat, and this recipe does just that. Ingredients 1–1/2 cup pureed cantaloupe 2–1/4 cup Heavy Cream 1/2 cup sugar pinch of salt 1–1/2 tsp pure vanilla Chop/puree cantaloupe until it reaches the consistency you wish. I like mine to have a few lumps in it for texture. Mix cream, sugar, salt and vanilla until dissolved. Add Cantaloupe mixture. Pour mixture into a 1.5 quart ice cream maker and process according the the machine's directions with ice and rock salt for about 15–20 minutes. Serve immediately or freeze and scoop. READ THIS
NOIR BY CHRISTOPHER MOORE In a bold move I haven’t attempted since my senior year of high school, I’m reviewing a book that I haven’t read. True story. Other than the title Noir on the dust jacket of Christopher Moore’s latest novel, I haven’t read a single word of the book. However, I can tell you this: I loved it. I’m writing this review two days before I leave for vacation and Noir is the book that I’m packing to read poolside. So how do I know I loved it? Because Christopher Moore’s writing has never let down. My first experience with his work came on a vacation in 2010, when I grabbed a copy of Fool another tourist had left behind at the resort. Fool is a retelling of King Lear from the perspective of Pocket, the court jester. Immediately, I was hooked on Moore’s style and his ability to convey fast paced dialogue with razor sharp wit. As soon as I returned stateside, I started tearing through his other novels. If you want to start with his finest, I suggest Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal. This issue hits the racks on July 6th. By the time you read this, I will have finished Noir. You should read it. Trust me. —TONY DOOLIN

RAPTURE For those of us that grew up in the era where hip hop was becoming one of America’s preeminent artforms, the present state of the genre can appear to have deviated from the formula into a semblance of mumbling and incoherence. Enter the Netflix original docu-series Rapture, which debunks a lot of the misconceptions that surround hip hop in 2018. The force behind Rapture is the NY-based media company Mass Appeal (Nas is a major investor), and the series mixes different generations and iterations with the conversations they have with artists including Nas, T.I., 2 Chainz, Logic and many more. It was the Logic episode that impressed me the most (it’s the first one). It tells the story of Logic, who walks the fine line of being a hip hop artist with a bi-racial background. It is thought provoking, eye opening and thoroughly entertaining. If you are fan, you will walk away from this series encouraged that the future of this groundbreaking genre is in good hands. —CHARLES DAVIS

THE INTERVIEW BY CHARLES DAVIS
ver the past couple of years, one of the bands that has made the most noise has been Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real. From their stellar performance at last year's AmericanaFest in Nashville to their relentless touring schedule, including a stop at Shaky Knees in Atlanta this past May, Lukas and this band are redefining what Americana can be. He talked with us about growing up with a famous father, the influence Neil Young has had on his career, and Bradley Cooper’s authenticity as a musician.
That's a good question. I grew up with a lot of amazing people to look up to like Kristofferson. Kris Kristofferson was probably, besides my dad early on... he was the biggest influence in my life. And he still is. He's one of the greatest songwriters. Probably the greatest that ever lived in the country world. Bob Dylan looks up to him, you know? He's a great writer and he's written some amazing songs. They were great guys. Very humble, and they treat people with love and respect. A lot of people grow up in famous environments and people with a lot of influence, and I just feel blessed to have grown up and in this particular group because of the humility that everybody embodies. The idea that it's just about surviving and being kind to others. And that's about it. Playing music.
From an early age, you traveled on the road with your father and you started playing at the age of 11 while you were living in Maui. What was the first song you learned to play on guitar? I think was from the Red Headed Stranger album. It was Dad's version of “Blue Eyes Cryin' In The Rain.”
Talking about inspirational figures, one of the defining moments in the story of you and Promise of The Real is the influence that legend Neil Young has had on this band. Talk about this connection and how he helped mold what you guys have become. First and foremost, in terms of rock n' roll in that world and that generation, he's the only one that is still really going after it hardcore, heavily with the right tones, with the right feel, with the right integrity involved. He's all about it being real and not bowing down to conformity in any way. Just doing what your heart tells you to do—which is what Dad and everybody else embodies. But Neil is like the rock n' roll generation's version of that. I feel like it's only natural that in the rock n' roll world, he's my favorite because he's got the greatest songs. I mean, look—you can make an argument that The Beatles, of course, are the biggest when it comes to the songs, and then The Rolling Stones
Normally, as kids, our parents' friends become extended family. My dad and my parents were in the Air Force, so my dad's friends were Air Force guys who just liked to play basketball. Your dad had a different profession. Your Dad's friends were Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings. Together, they helped write great music that defined a generation. What effect did that have on you, being around all of those legends at an age that was really formative in your life?

are the biggest in rock. But Neil, to me, is a combination of both of those in one. He's got “Heart of Gold” and “Only Love Can Break Your Heart”. And then he's got “Cinnamon Girl”, and “Cowgirl In The Sand”, and “Rockin' In The Free World”. Then he continues to stay relevant into the 90's and 2000's—and now releasing political records and still saying something. Staying with exactly the same message that he used to have. So to me, these guys are the greatest, and that's why I look up to them. How long did you end up touring with Neil when he asked you all to be his backing band? We still are. We've got a couple of dates lined up in the future. He is with Crazy Horse now, but I think he's just using both of us whenever one of us is available. It's a blessing for us too because we're on the road right now, so we couldn't have made it. If Neil wants to play, he should be able to play. Like we talked about earlier, you have toured and played with your legendary father, Willie Nelson, for years. Out of the hundreds of songs that you two have played together, which one is your favorite to play with him? That's a great question. It's interesting. I play rhythm on all of the songs. But ok... so there's two. One of my favorite moments growing up was watching Dad play “Bloody Mary Morning”. If you look up live versions of Dad's “Bloody Mary Morning”, there is a version on Austin City Limits from 1973 or 1977 maybe, but it's one of the first Austin city limits ever. That version of Bloody Mary Morning is insane. I mean, it's like listening to Eric Clapton's blues band. The licks that he's thrown out there are just rock n' roll. It's heavy. But it's also super bluesy and just jamming. It's amazing. So I love listening to that, and we used to do that every night. And then I like watching him do “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground” because that's my favorite. He always does a really pretty, melodic, sweet solo, and it's always real nice. He's a great guitar player.

That is the truth. Your father is absolutely beloved by everyone. I don't care what race, color, or creed, the human race loves your father. Do you feel like it is your responsibility to preserve the legacy that he has built—and how do you balance caring the last name of Nelson while also letting the world know that you, Lukas, are your own man? That's a loaded question. (laughing) I don't know. I just go out there and play. I try and treat people kindly, stand up for myself when I can and try and admit when I'm wrong... you know? Stand strong when I know I'm right and just live. I'm just trying to play music for a living. On the latest album, one of the most interesting collaborations was the work that you did with Lady Gaga on “Find Yourself ” and “Carolina”. How did that relationship get started? It started with this movie that's coming out October 5th called A Star is Born with her and Bradley Cooper starring, and the band will be in it as well. I wrote and co-wrote about eight songs in the film, and the band played a lot of them too. So we were in the studio because I helped produce it with Stephani (Lady Gaga), and then I helped consult Bradley on how to kind of carry an authenticity as a musician. He saw me there and said, “I want to take this guy and have him show me the ropes on how to look like I know what I'm doing.” Funny thing was, is that he already did know what he was doing. He's a great musician. And finally, you lived in Maui when you were little, and other than playing music you were into skateboarding and soccer. So who is your favorite skateboarder of all time and your favorite soccer player of all time? Oh, that's a good one. Ok. Favorite skateboarder of all time? Eric Koston has this style that I really dig. It's the street stuff, but then there's also Daewon Song. Oh no! Wait! Excuse me... All time favorite? Rodney Mullen. I think he was the most innovative skateboarder ever. And Tony Hawk. I mean, Tony Hawk did the first 900 and now there's like 14 year old kids doing them. (laughing) He definitely pushed the limits and deserves recognition, and he was the most famous because he had the video game. And soccer player? Probably Diego Maradona or Pele. More Pele than Maradona, I believe because...I mean, let’s face it. Pele carried himself a little better than Maradona in their post soccer careers. PAUL CAUTHEN BY AARON IRONS
Paul Cauthen's great-uncle was a minister at the Church of Christ in Tyler, TX. Paul and his family attended services several times a week. Paul's grandfather, Jim Paul, was a twin to the minister and director of the choir. The congregation didn't allow amplification or instrumentation, so Paw Paw (as Paul called him) directed with a voice that rang and reverberated like a hammer on anvil. He taught Paul the Lord's songs from the Heavenly Highways, how to use his voice. Paul's grandmother taught him to read the shape notes in the hymnal. Paw Paw had grown up in Lubbock, had known Buddy Holly and especially Sonny Curtis. He loved country music and the old rebel rockers. Paw Paw had an old Gibson at home, and he taught Paul those songs too. He showed Paul how to make the chords, how to get rhythm, and then cancer ate him 'til he was gone. Paul was 10-years-old and devastated. He inherited the Gibson, a copy of the Red Headed Stranger, and wild streak. When he was eighteen, Paul was arrested on a marijuana charge and placed on probation. He wasn't quite ready to walk the line it seemed, and found more trouble with the law. Paul's probation was revoked, and he found himself behind an asphalt truck on a Texas chain gang. For seventy-eight days, Paul endured the fear and heat behind bars. He wrote songs, and since he couldn't have a guitar, Paul relied on the lessons he learned from Paw Paw in church. He didn't need a guitar. His voice was his instrument. Paul's range was reminiscent of Roy Orbison and Waylon Jennings. He could find the bottom then soar to the top—just like those Sunday mornings... or Saturday nights. The state of Texas turned him loose. Paul headed off to San Marcos to try college. It did not work out. In 2010, after separately tooling around the music scene in Central Texas to no real end, Paul formed an outfit with David Beck that would become known as Sons of Fathers. Using escalating rhythms and surgical harmonies, Sons of Fathers found a home among Americana/folk audiences. They're debut album was produced pedal steel master and fellow Texan, Lloyd Maines, followed by another release in 2013. The following year, Paul Cauthen was ready to move on. He saddled his pony, metaphorically speaking, and headed back to East Texas. The music he'd been recording with Sons of Fathers didn't feel like “him” anymore. Paul went to Dallas and wrote. And drank, and wrote some more. He joined up with Beau Bedford and the Texas Gentlemen, and in 2016 released the epic, My Gospel.

My Gospel is a huge album that doesn't lack for depth. “Righteous” is the word Paul uses to describe it. If there was a country & western shaped hole in Americana that needed to be filled, My Gospel plugs it with a spiritual surplus. Paul's vocals, honed from praise and worship as well as bars and clubs, oscillates between devout country music and gospel clarity. His phrasing conjures up post Born to Run Springsteen and there's a funky, deep south quality that recalls Jim Stafford. Comparisons to Johnny Cash abound. It's certainly over-produced at times, sure—but, hoss, My Gospel is a beautiful, tough piece of work. On June 22nd, Paul Cauthen released the Have Mercy EP. If he was lost after Sons of Fathers, and found with My Gospel, then Paul now appears to be on the hunt. Starting out with the Rick Ruben era Cash-like “Everybody Walkin' This Land”, Cauthen swings a heavy, broad-headed axe that pops the air with hellfire and brimstone. The mood lightens up musically with the swingin' “Resignation”, and the title track has Paul gettin' low and swampy. “Lil Son” revisits the cinematic, ghost ridery-ness of My Gospel but feels stronger, streamlined— like every part truly counts. “My Cadillac” is a straight honky tonkin' rocker full of Jerry Reed country funk. “Tumbleweed” feels like it might've been more at home on Paul's previous effort, and the final cut, “In Love With a Fool” feels like Waylon recording with the Wrecking Crew—which is to say, it's almost too good. Even with the majority of songs running past the four minute mark, Have Mercy doesn't burden the listener. On the contrary, with only seven songs, the EP is sure to leave you wanting more. 11thHourOnline.com 39

The political songwriting focuses on U.S. politics in “Missing Children,” and while this political angle might seem strange for a band from Canada, it goes to show that the world is taking notice of all of America's decisions. As politically divisive as our country currently is, at no time do the Cowboy Junkies take a side. The album addresses issues, but it leaves the listener with an open-ended decision to be made personally. The Cowboy Junkies don't charter any new territory for longtime fans, but All That Reckoning showcases the talents of a band that, 33 years in, still remain relevant to the headlines of today.

In 2017, she co-wrote the song “Puttin’ on a Show” and it reached No. 1 for Cassidy Rae Gaiter in Australia.

Kee Avil is a solo song project based in Montreal, QC, combining guitar, voice and electronics into weird song forms that stagger between structure and improvisation.
