RUNNING COMMENTARY So much, soooooooo much happening… I don’t even know where to begin?! Let’s start with the elephant’s trunk, shall we? How ‘bout the Georgia National Fair? The rides, the food, the music! It’s absolutely necessary to make the Fair as musically diverse as possible—and I believe the promoters have outdone themselves this year. Vanilla Ice, Salt-N-Pepa, Tone Loc, Young MC, All-4-One, Travis Tritt, Charlie Daniels, The Outlaws, Peabo Bryson, Sammy Kershaw, Aaron Tippin, Colin Raye, Neal McCoy… The only thing that would make this lineup better is if we could somehow get Spinderella to set up shop behind Charlie Daniels… I mean, imagine—Charlie rosins up his bow, launches into “The Devil Went Down To Georgia”, and right when the Devil begins his solo, Spinderella ascends from the stage on a neon, rhinestone, naugahyde, leopard-print & chrome riser, turntables smokin’... Well, maybe that’s just how I’d do it. And then—you got RBRM coming to the Macon Coliseum! Charles Davis spoke to Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie Devoe, and even if you aren’t a fan of R&B (who doesn’t have at least one slow jam on their playlist?) be sure to check out that interview. Those cats were candid, cool, and there’s no misinterpreting the passion they still have. With Charles adding sidelines commentary for the Mercer Bears to his already overflowing calendar, you’d think I’d have left him alone—but no. He also sat down to speak to Mike MacDonald from the band Family and Friends. And write the Creek Page artist spotlight. The man is a rock. To cap September, Just Tap’d is celebrating Oktoberfest, Joey Stuckey is celebrating life, Beau + Luci will be celebrating Macon music… and if you need more stuff to go do, see, and eat then all you gotta do is keep turning the pages. Love ya, mean it. —AI Aaron@TheCreekFM.com

Artist Jen Worsham’s method is calculated and intentional. It is influenced by nature, gravity, fluidity, and simplicity. “With non-objective work, there are no limits and there are no guidelines,” says Worsham. “The challenge, for me, lies in creating something that didn’t exist before, and learning to recognize when it’s complete.” Her current concentration is in fluid acrylic art, with work ranging from miniature paper paintings to 3’x4’ canvases. She’s redefining the concept in a modern and refined manner; an elegant and authentic interpretation of a trending technique. 11 QUESTIONS
ALLI KERR of Pink Physique
12 SEPTEMBER 28–OCTOBER 5, 2018
ONE Alli, how long have you owned the Pink Physique? We are in our 9th year of helping ladies in Middle Georgia get healthier & happier. TWO This is a ladies only facility—what else makes you different? We offer programs for ladies that consider themselves out of shape & in shape. Many ladies are scared to go to a fitness training facility. They are afraid they won’t be able to do the exercises. Maybe they have had a bad experience where they were pushed beyond their limits. I have heard stories where ladies went to a gym & felt totally defeated after one workout. We make sure to design the workouts appropriately for the client and her starting point. Then we gradually build her stamina, strength, and confidence at a pace that she is comfortable with. The same goes for a more experienced exerciser. We challenge and push them appropriately as well. THREE You’re so much more than just an owner, you’re also a trainer. Why is fitness such a passion for you? Fitness makes ladies feel stronger & more confident, me included. My passion is exposing the power we have within ourselves. Some ladies come to me depressed, stressed, and without much hope of feeling better. Some are down right miserable. I get to help ladies find hope, courage, and strength. FOUR Do you believe in “cheat” days while dieting? I don’t believe in “dieting” in the traditional sense. I have had to make drastic changes to my eating. At first it felt like dieting. My body was used to eating junk. My body and mind were very challenged when I made changes to get rid of that junk. When you eat whole/real foods the vast majority of the time then you can cheat if you want something outside of that. I really don’t like to call it cheating though because “cheating” sounds like something we should feel guilty about. But if you eat healthy, whole foods 90% of the time then you should never feel guilty when you eat something not so healthy. It is a “treat”, not a “cheat.” FIVE What types of classes do you offer at The Pink Physique? We focus on coach-led metabolic sessions & strength building/fat burning sessions. Our workouts boost the metabolism, burn the max amount of fat, tighten our bodies, improve balance, increase stamina, & improve coordination. We help our ladies perform at their peak in life so
they stay young physically & mentally. SIX You encourage and lift women up at Pink Physique—what are some things you do to motivate these ladies? First, we listen to their goals & dreams. We also listen to their fears and struggles so that we can help them overcome them. Then we do a movement screening so that we can design appropriate workouts. Being able to do what fits your body is very up-lifting. We help them see their growth & achievements. We are their biggest fans. And the most motivating thing we do is get them results. There is nothing more motivating than results (mental & physical). SEVEN W hat do you consider reasonable goals for your clients? Often times ladies set their goals low because they have tried another program that was not appropriate & felt like they failed. Their confidence in reaching a goal is at an all-time low. First, we work on mindset & show them that they can do it. Other ladies come in wanting immediate miracle results. As they get going, learn the science of the body & begin to build confidence they can set appropriate exercise, strength, or weight loss goals. Goals that they never imagined they could achieve. EIGHT Pain is one of the top reasons that hold women back from exercising- do you offer low impact exercises? Pain is now one of the biggest epidemics in the U.S. (it is right there with obesity). Disability claims for joint disorders and musculoskeletal issues have increased significantly over the past 10 years. Pain and obesity are merely symptoms of decreased movement, posture issues, stress, and the non-nutritive foods we eat. Our bodies are literally falling apart. We cannot miraculously fix already broken down bones & joints. However, we will help you stay mobile, strong, and flexible. The more positive changes you make in movement and eating the better your body performs. We personalize and adapt ladies workouts based on their mobility. It is amazing to see our ladies perform movements they never thought possible. They get a part of their life back that was lost. It makes them feel younger and vibrant with a much more positive outlook. NINE W hat’s a fitness product that you can’t live without and would recommend to your members? Our clean high-quality protein powder. The Pink Physique now has our own private label. There are
hundreds of brands with so many claims on the market that it can be overwhelming. Ladies want to know which is best. Most have tons of additives and filler to bulk the product so they can sell it for a cheaper price. Ours has the highest quality and cleanest ingredients that I could find. Plus it has digestive enzymes and bromelain to help with inflammation & reducing aching muscles. I use it post-workout to help rebuild and repair tissue. The majority of women do not get enough protein in their diets. This is another reason our bodies break down. Aside from real/whole food this is one supplement that I use religiously. TEN Is there such thing as overtraining? Absolutely! We can overtrain in a single session or overtrain by training too often without proper recovery time. Our tendency to want fast results can lead us to perform overly intense workouts that are not balanced with strength, mobility & flexibility exercises. We go from sitting in a car or desk to a super intense workout. This is a shock to our system. Over training can also be the result of not prepping the body for exercise. Foam rolling & range of motion exercises should be performed prior to a workout. These movements should be relative to our bodies needs and the workout we are performing. Even low intensity exercise can be too much for a “stove up” body. We must train smarter. ELEVEN How important is it that women participate in self-care? It is the most important investment that we are failing to make. Many of us invest in ourselves from the neck up while letting our bodies from the neck down go to waste. We spend billions on hair, skin-care, botox, fillers, peels & plastic surgery to “look” younger while we live in very old & broken bodies. Mindset-wise we look at body self-care as a cost and not an investment. We look at hiring a fitness coach as an expense that outweighs the life-changing benefits that affect every facet of our lives. How many athletes do not have a coach? We complain that our bodies do not perform at their peak yet we haven’t invested in the self-care required to perform like a top athlete at this game of life. Instead, we are losing at life. Today is the day. Call us now 478-254-3220 and get started. Come by our facility: 6255 Zebulon Road, Ste 250, email us at allikerr@thepinkphysique.com, find us online at www.thepinkphysique.com, Facebook/ Instagram: The Pink Physique, and mention this article for a 1 Week FREE No Risk Trial.

Kirk West’s 50,000 SHADES OF GRAY GREGG ALLMAN August 1980 Alpine Valley, Wisc
A hot day at the beautiful, southern Wisconsin venue—a 40,000 seat amphitheatre across the valley from a ski resort (this was the same hill that took the life of Stevie Ray Vaughan 10 years later, btw). The Brothers always loved playin’ there, and they did several times over the years. The Grateful Dead made it a multi-night stop most years. The parties were long & hard every show, and the band would just eat up that energy every time. On this simmering, steamy evening, the boys carried on playing a 3 hour show in spite of the heat. I always loved shooting the band there cause the stage was wide & deep, and as usual, I had the run of the joint all night long. I also loved shootin’ Gregg when he smoked... long & cool, lookin’ hip as shit... That boy had attitude from start to finish. Plus, the ABB generally stayed at the Playboy Club Resort near Lake Geneva, so the aftershow parties would last till the next morning with lots of beautiful guests & other players. Those were the days my friend... We thought they'd never end. Kirk West is a photographer, archivist, and the host of “Into The Mystic” Wednesday Nights at 7pm on 100.9 The Creek. He’s published two books of his work, Les Brers—Kirk West’s Photographic Journey with The Brothers, and The Blues in Black and White—a collection documenting his time on the Chicago Blues scene in the 1970s and 1980s. Kirk and his wife, Kirsten, own and operate Gallery West at 447 Third Street in Macon. Visit kirkwestphotography.com and the Gallery West to view and purchase prints and canvases of the greatest artists in blues, country, rock n’ roll and soul.

THE CARL VINSON TACO THE TACO SHED
100 GA-247 WARNER ROBINS An aircraft carrier, and Antarctic mountain, a parkway, a retirement community, and a taco—what do all these things have in common? They're all named after legendary U.S. Representative, Carl Vinson. Born and raised in Milledgeville, Vinson graduated from Mercer and spent fifty years (and one month!) in the House of Representatives. He worked to expand the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, and in 1964, earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction. At the Taco Shed in Warner Robins, owner Derrick Baas named a particular menu item in honor of the late politician. The Carl Vinson Taco features Southwestern Steak, roasted black bean and corn, queso fresco, cilantro, guallijo sauce—and Baas prefers it on a corn tortilla! A CONVERSATION WITH
MIKE MACDONALD OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS BY CHARLES DAVIS
Athens, GA, with its history of producing amazing bands, must have something in the water that aids in the cultivation of great music. Family and Friends are continuing the legacy, performing ridiculous sold out show for thousands of fans, and with their latest release Felix Culpa, that momentum is not slowing down. Ahead of their show in Macon on October 6th, I had a chance to talk with guitarist and vocalist Mike MacDonald about the band's origins and the album club that they created.
26 SEPTEMBER 28–OCTOBER 5, 2018
CD- Athens is a great place for musicians to cut their teeth and find their musical self—and then let's just be honest: some damn good football as well. Talk to me about the circumstances that led to you all as a band coming together. MM- Athens played a huge part in it. A few of us knew each other from high school, but it wasn't until we went to Athens, attended UGA, and kind of just... the musical scene brought us together as a band. Then after college, we decided we wanted to try and make this happen full-time and haven't looked back since. While you were at UGA, you studied film production but decided after graduation not to pursue that as a career—and you took about a year off. What did you learn about yourself during that time? I learned a lot just in terms of trying to make it on my own with a band. Not necessarily following the path that had been laid out— or that I thought I would be following. There was a lot of soul-searching at the time and coming into my own person. I'm glad we ultimately took that route because the band wouldn't have happened otherwise. Back to this Athens thing for a second. The city has a long, storied history of producing great artists and bands regardless of the genre. Do you all feel any pressure to be the "next great band out of Athens"? I don't think so. There's so many amazing bands coming out of Athens, constantly. I think it's just more of a pride thing to be included in that conversation. And being a part of Athens history means a lot to us, so that's something that we take pride in, and we're excited to be a part of that community. I have had the opportunity to see you perform twice. Once at The Shaky Knees Music Festival and then again at Bragg Jam, here in Macon this past July. The crazy thing, besides the fact that the band has two drummers (which I find fantastic), is the amount of energy and enthusiasm that you exude when you're all on stage. It's infectious. Where does that come from? To be completely honest, we just love to play music. We love being on stage and getting to share that environment with a crowd that is equally into it. It just brings that intensity and that excitement to the next level. We kind of look at each live show as this opportunity to do something special. Something where you can forget what happened in the past or what happened that day. You can forget any responsibilities you have coming up and just live in that moment. That's something we try to achieve with every live show and just elevate it to the next level. Let's talk about the newest album, Felix Culpa, which was released a few months ago. What was the thought process around choosing that as the album title?
A lot of those same “coming of age” struggles that we were figuring out when we started the band kinda just heightened in our mid-twenties, and we're just trying to figure it all out. Being in a band isn't necessarily easy all the time. There's certainly ups and downs, and it's only natural, I think, to question, “Are we doing the right thing? Are we on the right path?” So I think, to a degree, everybody in the band was having these questions of “What's the meaning of all of this?”, and “Are we heading down the right direction?” Ultimately, we decided on that title. We've loosely translated it to "Happy Mistake" and with the idea in mind that even if there is no meaning if it's all just a coincidence that we're all here, that alone is worth celebrating. It's a positive thing to be able to experience it all. While I was doing some research, I read that during this album's writing process, you all started an album club, and I found that to be so cool. Talk to me about that process and how it helped foster the sound of this project. For sure. When we first started writing together, it was more from an acoustic standpoint. I was bringing in songs on the acoustic guitar and working it out. So they all sounded in the same realm, and we knew we didn't necessarily want to continue down that path, and that we had a lot more to offer. A lot of that stems from all the different musical backgrounds from the band as a collective. One thing we wanted to narrow in on was the album club. The way it worked was that each member would nominate an album that had meant something to them, had a cool part in it, or anything that inspired them in some kind of way. We would listen to those each week, and when we started writing the album, it just enabled us to have a much broader conversation and be able to target parts of songs and albums that we might not have known about otherwise... and allowed it to inspire and influence our own work. Now on that same kick, talking about albums that mean a lot to you: What was one of the albums that you brought into the album club, and secondly, what's one album you're listening to right now that has become the earworm that you can't get rid of? Cool. The band Local Natives was always a major influence for me. All three of their albums were huge motivators just from the percussion standpoint, the harmonies they bring, and just a little different look at the way a song is crafted. That's something I've always enjoyed and liked to bring to the table. Right now, I can't stop listening to the new Big Red Machine album with Justin Vernon from Bon Iver and Aaron Dessner from The National. It's been on repeat. (laughing) I can totally understand that. One last thing before I get you out of here. Like I told you before the interview, the album sounds absolutely fantastic, and it feels like you are at a live show with Family and Friends. Did you all go into the recording process with that in mind? Yes. One thing that we've been striving for in the recording process since we started this band was honing in on that live sound and trying to figure out a way to make that translate to a recording. It's been like chasing a dragon in that regard and just trying to narrow in on what's working and what's not working. But for this album, we knew we wanted it to be huge, and we wanted it to sound live in that same respect. Hopefully, it panned out that way. We're going to continue to go down that path—and we invite everyone to come join with us.

TV TIME
The number of television programs and streaming services has gotten out of hand. Seriously, no one can keep up, and a huge part of routine conversation these days revolves around comparing favorite shows. Truthfully, I love it. Never have I been too cool for TV, and never will I deny the joy I experience when plugging into the idiot box—especially on Saturday mornings growing up. That’s one of the things I love best about having so much to choose from now! All those cartoons are still out there. Every episode of every season of every franchise! I’m like Scrooge McDuck swimming in an open vault of golden nostalgia! My kids don’t realize how good they’ve got it. When I was a boy, you had to get up at the crack of dawn on Saturdays to catch your shows. Or maybe you booked it home from school in hopes of catching a handful of reruns. But even if you got up early enough or made it home lickity-split, you weren’t out of the woods yet. Then you were stuck with the difficult task of choosing between programs! You might have to sacrifice Captain N: The Gamemaster for Batman: The Animated Series… notice I say “you” might have to do that, because I sure as hell wasn’t giving up Captain N. That show was like a Super Smash Brothers mash-up before such a thing even existed. I’m not hatin’ on Batman, these are just the very real struggles we faced in the olden times. Could you imagine going back in time and explaining to your younger self
how readily available all these cartoons are now?? I would have flipped out! I can hear me now! “So yeah, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Thundercats, Silver Hawks... whatever I want... it’s all there? Any time I want it? You came all the way back in time, and this is what you came to tell me? First of all, how the hell did that even happen? This better be some kind of Terminator 2 situation, and I’m John Connor. Am I John Connor? I’m not John Connor. Well, I see you got a bunch of tattoos, how’s that working out for you rockstar? And a wedding ring—so I guess we finally kiss a girl? What’s that? We have two kids? Just great. Did you at least bring me back a sports almanac, like in Back to the Future II? No, because we still don’t like sports? Jesus, man, did you really come all this way just to tell me about cartoons?!?” Ok, so obviously, I would flip out more because of the time travel than streaming videos. Also, maybe I was a little bit of a smartass. But you have to admit, it really makes you think. About what, I’m not entirely sure. That sounds like a great topic for next time. Y’all come back now, ya hear! Bo Walker is a cartoon loving man-child who deeply morns the loss of Toys R Us, and who writes to remember the good times.

MAGIC CANDLE COMPANY Ask any true Disney aficionado, and they will tell you that the time spent between park visits is a void. You find yourself almost (ok, totally) jonesing for a Disney fix. I’ve tried movies, and they work for a while. My favorite Disney soundtrack? Yeah, of course. Recipes? You betcha! I find every park recipe I can—and yet all of these things still leave me yearning for The Magic Kingdom. That is, until I discovered the Magic Candle Company. The Magic Candle Company boasted that I would be able to “Bring the smell of the Parks and Resorts” home today with scented candles, wax melts, car air fresheners, fragrance oils, room sprays... Well, TAKE MY MONEY! From the lobbies of the Polynesian Resort & Port Orleans, to the scent of Rome burning in Spaceship Earth and the aroma of the water in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, their magical mouse scents go on and on and on! I received my shipment quickly and opened the box with so much anticipation. I had ordered 8 oils to be used in diffusers throughout my home. My husband thought I’d lost my marbles... until he caught a whiff of “Orleans”. (Due to licensing, these scents are not meant to refer to any specific destination, resort or attraction owned by any corporation and are not associated in any manner with The Walt Disney Company.) I felt like I just walked through the sliding doors of Port Orleans, ready to get a plate of beignets and trade some Disney pins with Cast Members. Next, Polynesian Paradise oil. ALOHA!! The tropical bamboo and green tea scents were not overpowering, they was fabulous! I closed my eyes and was standing in the lobby of the famous Polynesian Resort, Ohana directly above me, a carved Maui Tiki God in front of me—and if I walked straight through the lobby, out the doors to the left, I could get myself a dole whip. Do I recommend the Magic Candle Company? Absolutely, both Mickey gloved thumbs up! Check out this scent-sational experience at MagicCandleCompany.com. — ASHLEY DOOLIN

MAIN STREET BAKERY’S PEANUT BUTTER CHOCOLATE CHUNK COOKIES I am a HUGE Disney Dork. It’s a real problem at times. At other times, it’s awesome— for my husband at least—because I Disney Bake. I have emailed Disney, even requested recipes while in the park. Guess what? They provide you with their recipes!!! Here’s one of our favorites, Main Street Bakery’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk Cookies. Ingredients: ½ c. softened butter ¾ c. Reeses Peanut Butter ¾ c. packed brown sugar ¼ c. granulated sugar 1 large egg 1 tsp vanilla 1 tblsp whole milk ¼ tsp salt Cream butter, peanut butter and both sugars for 2–3 minutes. Add egg, vanilla, milk, baking soda, and salt- mix until dough just comes together. Stir in both chips. Scoop ¼ cupfuls of chilled dough and place on a cookie sheet. Spacing doesn’t matter because all you are doing is chilling the dough for at least 4 hours or longer. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper or a silpat mat. Evenly space cookie dough balls on the sheet and lightly flatten with the palm of your hand. Bake 11-14 minutes until the bottoms start to brown. (11-12 minutes if you like a doughier cookie) Cool 5 minutes. Have a magical day! —ASHLEY DOOLIN Editors Note: Ashley reeeeeeaaaalllllyyy needs a trip to Disney World. It’s beginning to affect her work.

REQUIRED LISTENING
THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS, DAVID BOWIE I used to keep two copies of Ziggy Stardust; one to enjoy at maximum volume, one to gift at a moments notice. It is, forever and always, my favorite album. I picked it up when I was 19, familiar only with the barely-classic-rock-radio-friendliness of “Suffragette City”. Looking at the cover, an innocuous colorized Mick Rock photo of the guitar-hung Bowie outside a London furrier, you might not wrap your head around the concept of an extraterrestrial demigod rockstar. But within the private world of an off-brand Korean “walkman” with black, foam-covered headphones, Ziggy Stardust filled me with warm, angsty certainty: Rock n’ roll was not of this Earth. It was divine. Ziggy fades in with the apocalyptical prophecy of “Five Years”, a portrait of civilization realizing impending doom. As a teenager on the brink of nothing at all, that’s how I felt: Five years, that’s all we’ve got. I was a morose motherf——r. The album perpetuates, into the stars, detailing the power and prurience of that space-flung messiah wielding salvation in the shape of rock n’ roll. Legend has it that Ziggy was based on original Brit rocker Vince Taylor who, in a nervous breakdown, saw himself as a rock god. Of course, I didn’t know that then. Nor did I know about Iggy Pop and his influence or the actual genius of Mick Ronson… But it was such a perfect orgy of sci-fi, sex, and rock n’ roll—the next evolutionary step. Oh, the floodgate Ziggy opened! By the time I reached the ultimate cut, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide”, the indoctrination, the invasion was complete. It’s afterburn and tone, moonage daydreams and sexual revolution. Honestly, I don’t think I knew what rock n’ roll was before Ziggy Stardust. And if you’ve never experienced it then you don’t either. —AARON IRONS

LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE BY CELESTE NG Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng follows Mia Warren and her fifteen year old daughter, Pearl, while they rent a home from the Richardsons, a well-to-do family in the utopian-like city of Shaker Heights. Ng spends the first half of the book building an intertwined story of the two families, from unrequited high school love to dysfunctional family dynamics to upper class entitlement. By doing so, the reader becomes so invested in the lives of the characters that it makes it impossible to put the book down. In addition to the storylines of the two families, Ng's tertiary storyline involves another prominent family in Shaker Heights who is in the process of adopting the baby of a Chinese immigrant, but the process comes across complications when the birth mother decides she no longer wants to give up her daughter. I found this storyline the most thought provoking, and it had both myself and my book club asking ourselves some hard questions. This made for great discussion— especially since there was disagreement! Ng does a phenomenal job bringing all the characters to life and creating a compelling story. Best part though, was the many 90s reference throughout the book. From Jerry Springer to Titanic's release, to the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal, it was a great flashback to my youth. Ng even created a playlist for the book on Spotify that I've been enjoying and educating my kids on the sweet tunes like The Fugees "Killing Me Softly" and "Good Intentions" by Toad the Wet Sprocket. Read this book soon because Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington will be starring in the soon-to-be mini-series on Hulu. If Hulu's Handmaid's Tale is any indication, this will be a not-to-be-missed series! —ERIN HAWKINS 11thHourOnline.com 33
THE GRIND Never Stops AN INTERVIEW WITH BELL BIV DEVOE By Charles Davis
34 SEPTEMBER 28–OCTOBER 5, 2018
R
on Devoe, Rick Bell and Mike Bivins, better known as Ronnie, Ricky and Mike— a.k.a. Bell Biv Devoe—have been a part of two of the most influential music groups of all time. From their time honing their skills in the streets of Boston with New Edition to their current and relentless schedule with the RBRM tour, these three have been a part of the American music landscape for over 30 years. They will be at the Macon Centreplex on October 5th along with the man, the myth, the legend that is Bobby Brown. I had a chance to talk to Ron, Rick and Mike about the early days of New Edition, the current state of the genre they once defined, and what continues to drive them to this day.
Charles Davis- I want to be completely upfront. The general manager here at the radio station and myself envisioned you all doing this interview—the legends that you are—in a high rise penthouse painted in nothing but white, sitting in the living room on a crushed velvet blue sofa, wearing monogrammed and embroidered fleece pajamas—and Ron, you're holding a tiger named Raj by a diamond encrusted chain. Is any of that happening at this moment? Ron Devoe- Wow. (laughing) That's one hell of an imagination. You had me sold for a minute right there! CD- Just saying. It was a thought we had (laughing)! Now, it can be said that you three, along with the rest of the members of New Edition, helped create and direct an atmosphere where R&B and what we called hip hop in the late eighties and early nineties thrived in. And all of this would be nothing if it weren't for all of you coming together in Boston. What was life like for you guys in Boston during that time? Rick Bell- Man, it was a very interesting scene. This was well before social media. Well before even MTV and BET. And it was just a lot of fun for us... getting together and going over (choreographer and Ron's Uncle) Brooke Payne's house, learning new routines and getting excited about performing them for the first time at the different talent shows or shows that we would put together on our own. It was just a fun time... of just being consumed with music, you know? After school, we were going over Brooke's house and figuring out which person is going to sing lead on whatever particular song. We were rehearsing at the time, and I don't want to say we were famous, but we were pretty much wellknown in the Boston area amongst our peers. We won just about every talent show we ever joined and basically got to the point where we started doing our own shows—because we couldn't get into talent shows anymore! There was this moment, right before we went on stage at the Hollywood Talent Night in Boston. It was a conversation we had. This was even before Ron got in the group. It was a conversation we had about what we were going to do if we didn't win this contract. If we didn't win that particular talent show, you know? Basically, the conversation ended like, if we didn't win it… we didn't know what else to do. We were probably going to break up at that time. We didn't know how to go about recording, getting a record deal... pursuing that, you know? It just wasn't done at the time. So we just figured, “Look, if we don't win this, this is probably going to be the end of New Edition—right here—because we don't know what else to do!” But by God's grace, we went up there, and we did our thing... and won second place. It was disappointing for us, winning second place. It was the first time we lost a talent show. We went up to accept the award, and Maurice Starr said, "Hey man, I like these guys and I'm going to bring them. I'm going to give them a demo deal". And the rest is history, as you know.
and already these various other five men, six men steppin' and singing groups. We wanted to get there so bad, and we just really focused on the show part of it. We didn't really focus on the music part of it. We was just... so much into how we're going to perform, what we gonna wear… And the interesting thing, to come present day, is not only did we want to be on the level of our predecessors and our idols, but right now on this very day— we are who we wanted it to be! So as we sit in this seat with the new audience that came with the movie coming out, in God's time, something is going to happen that really brings it home. The movie was just a big piece. The tour that we're doing is just a big piece. But something else... Maybe it'd be the big tour, maybe it will be night 4—but something else is gonna come in that everyone can just say, “Now, we see how everything is happening in a circle”. Because we've been receiving accolades, but there's still something yearning inside of all of us that we couldn't even share with you,Charles—the real reason we've been on this phone today—and that's what's important to us is that we haven't received yet. CD - The three of you—along with Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, and later on Johnny Gill—formed one of the most influential groups in music history, New Edition. What I love about you guys, and what has to me has separated you from the rest, is the work ethic and the amount of time you spent on the road touring. Was that a decision that you all made early in the process? To be in front of the fans as much as you could? RD - I think the decision was kind of made for us to a certain extent. As Rick said earlier in the conversation, when you look at a person like Brooke Payne, and what it takes to make sure that you're honing your skills in a way... so that when the opportunity presents itself, you're prepared. For a person like that, or even Mike for that matter because Mike was heavy into basketball... You guys saw it in the movie. He came to a crossroad where he was like, "Man, do I go left or right? Basketball or Entertainment?" And having those coaches that'll tell you that in order to make it to the top tier level of success, it takes more. So it wasn't about rehearsing two or three times for about 15, 20 minutes, and the we go, "Ok we're ready." No. It was after homework and all of the above. He was like "I need you guys for a solid two, three, sometimes four hours, five days a week, sometimes seven days a week to make sure that you're honing your skills, and you'll be prepared." I think that's the thing that made it so that we could stand the test of time. As Mike said, the music part of it—“Candy Girl”, “Mr. Telephone Man”, “Cool It Now”, and “If It Isn't Love”—those were songs that bridged the gap for us in the show, but it was about entertaining. We haven't had new records on the radio over the last, you know, maybe even 15 years plus… as an entity really. But those classics still survive! It is the performance of those classics, and the fact that we love to entertain—that’s the reason why we still stand here today. You know, this is not about a new record that just came out yesterday. It's about people understanding that when they did see us back in the day—whether that was 1988 or 1997 on the New Edition Reunion Tour, or it was 1990 on the Triple Threat Tour with Bell Biv Devoe, Johnny Gill and Keith Sweat—they got their money's worth. And now, you know, when the tickets go on sale for this show, there's an energy that people feel. They are like, "Yo, I gotta go see them because I'm going to get everything that I desire in a performer,” because we put in the work honestly from day one. And that was a couple different mentors that we learned that from.
I need to hear something that means something, and I don't know if some of these songs mean anything right now. The Childish Gambino "This Is America" video? That meant something to me.
Mike Bivins - You know what's interesting though? And I think it's because we are all older—our conversations are different because we lived it, and now we know how to articulate it. But do you know what's deep? In the very beginning of New Edition, we didn't really understand why those certain five numbers were even in the group, but it was something special about each one of us. Then, we always thought we had to fight to be on the level of The Jacksons because we admire them so much—or The Temptations…
CD - With what Mike was saying earlier about wanting to be like The Temptations and The Jackson Five, who were some of the mentors that showed you that this is the way you need to be going about this if you're going to have that kind of longevity? RB - It was Brooke Payne. When we first said to him, "Hey, can you teach us what you're doing with The Untouchables and those groups that we saw in the talent show?”. I would say that’s probably our biggest inspiration because that was the continued on page 37 11thHourOnline.com 35

continued on page 35 moment when we saw them, and we saw how the crowd was reacting to them. That really inspired us all at the same time. We made a decision at that point that we wanted to be a group. We rushed Brooke and said, “We want to do that!”. Basically, we were like sponges at that point, and we just listened to everything that he told us and showed us: This is the presence. This is how you rock your suit. This is your position on this song, and this is the energy you need to give when you're singing lead, and be back here for this part of the routine. He basically taught us everything we needed to know as far as performance. CD - Now, in my humble opinion, Bell Biv Devoe, Boyz II Men—who learned at the feet of you gentlemen—and SWV dominated 90's R&B. The music has changed dramatically since then. R&B music doesn't seem to have the same place in pop culture that it used to. Do you ever see a day when it returns to the prominence that it used to have? And who are you all listening to right now that you absolutely love? RB - That's a great question. With me, it's selective. I mean, there's not a lot of what I can actually call R&B acts that I listen to today. What they define R&B to be today is just a lot different than what we grew up with—and it's the same as it was for our parents! So for the most part, man, thank God for Sirius XM Radio and all of that because that's what I keep it on. I listen to a lot of old school, a lot of groups that I've grown up with. From Marvin Gaye to Blue Magic—and even acts from our era! Whether it be Guy or Jodeci, and so on and so forth. When it comes to new acts, I have a pretty wide range of musical tastes myself, so I'll listen to pop radio and Bruno Mars. But as far as what is defined as R&B now? I can't... because it's just so different. It's hard for me to even call it R&B anymore. RD - Great answer, Rick. I mean, I'm on the heels of that one myself. I have very different musical tastes. You can find me in the EDM clubs, and you can find me in the dancehall clubs as well. I'll sit down and even listen to some classical music, and that's some of the things that my wife and I are teaching our kid now, even though they're only one-year-old. The state of the music industry is way different than it was. Take a look at Southern Hip Hop, for instance. It's really influencing what's going on in pop culture. It's a derivative of New York Hip Hop and where it came from, ultimately. But it's hard to break through when you look at radio, television and some of the outlets that are able to disseminate information on music. There's 12 songs that are being played all the time, and ultimately, those 12 songs are where they feel hip hop is today. An R&B act happens to break through once in a while—from a Janelle Monae to a J'hene Aiko. But as a whole, when you look at 10 out of 10 songs, R&B is probably sitting with one of them. The balance is definitely way off as far as black radio is concerned... when it comes to that. I mean, are they even quiet storm shows anymore? So it's definitely challenging. But there are those bright lights that pop through every now and then that definitely give us hope that it's going to continue doing what it needs to do. MB - I just feel like we're missing a “State of Music” show that we could watch to have this conversation we're having now because even with the three of us giving you an answer, your perspective will be different because you're sitting there. You're giving your opinion, and it's something that we know we're all missing. We're missing the fact that we know some of these records won't be around five years from now. And we know that. And the interesting thing about it is that the gatekeepers know it as well. So we're at a point now, where people are scrambling to survive. It's almost like being on the [sinking] boat. Everyone is trying to get onto the smaller boats to get away from the wreckage. It's so easy to get into the music business that even artists who haven't put in the work like Ron said, which was a regimen and a schedule, they are an artist as soon as they press a button. But they're not really an artist, they just have access to stuff because it's so easy to get in. It was almost like we're talking about trying to hold on to something... where it meant something. And then we're also trying to adjust something that we know is diluted and doesn't feel the same. So for me and what I listen to at this point in my life, I couldn't listen to an up to date record that will make my day feel better. I got to go back to songwriting and listening to a song that can uplift me that was written years ago. One that still stands the test of time because I'm older, and I need a different kick. I need to hear something that means something, and I don't know if some of these songs mean anything right now. The Childish Gambino "This Is America" video? That meant something to me. When he came with it, he paused us for a second because he took everything from MSNBC and CNN, and he put it into music. He hit us nice. The only thing that didn't happen is when he should have been at the BET Awards. We should have watched it live! continued on page 39

CD - You're absolutely right. MB - Because in actuality... Check this out, and I don't know if my crew will agree, but the BET Awards is a video show, right? It's supposed to be about the videos and the music and stuff, right? There was no bigger video leading up to that awards show—and more controversial on the web—than Childish Gambino's video. It was the number one conversation in the streets everywhere. CD - I'll ask you this Mike—do you think that as polarizing as that video was on both sides, that they avoided it for a reason? So that they couldn't peg BET as being complicit in furthering the message? Because you and I know that if Donald Glover would have performed “This Is America” on that stage, it would have been a visual juggernaut. Do you think they avoided it for that reason? MB - You know what? I don't control it. You don't control it. But if we were on State of The Music, we could talk about it! CD - (laughing) Ok then, that does it. Me and Bell Biv Devoe are doing a show called State of The Music. MB - For real! Because that was a good rebuttal—and with all of the interviews that we've done over the years, sometimes you've gotta know when to fold em', and I'm gonna fold on that question because that was a good comeback. (laughing) CD - I'm just saying, I work at an Americana radio station—but around here, good music is good music. We have real conversations, and that was the same thing we talked about when that Gambino video came out… just how revolutionary, how polarizing, and how needed it was at that moment. MB - But you know what though, Charles? You could get off on the message—but guess what else he did? Let's just tune out what we like. We like soul food. We like really good reality shows. We have a culture that drives us. If you were a dancer, and you wanted to just turn the volume down, you could still smile because he put it dancing. So he serviced the dancers. He put in CNN. He did the music video, but what he did is he just wanted you to understand this is where we are, and what are we gonna do right now. It's coming down to our children, so let me get these young kids to dance beside me to let you know how far down in
the world, and we want to have new songs in our show. We want to extend the show, we want to change the show up a little bit. So always thinking from that perspective... and that being the driving point for us. We need some new bounces, so let's create new music. We feel like the Three Stripes album, as far as our performances as artists, and who we are and how we've grown as musicians and performers, it's our best work. We're singing better, we're rapping better. The production is better than anything I've ever done because we have that 30 years experience that we put into all of that. That's going to continue to be the driving force, as long as people are still interested in hearing new music and coming to see us performing... just as who we are as artists. We love to create, and we love putting together new songs and then listening to it back in the studio, going back in the studio 2017 record cover for Three Stripes and redoing your part. Just the whole process of that creativity and watching it come from the studio, age it's going. It was clever. It was tasteful. If he would have had 25 girls on that stage, we might might've onto the radio—and then onto the stage, man. There's looked at the performance a little bit different because a certain high and gratification that you get that will live on forever. those girls would have been getting busy! CD - Let's talk about the current state of affairs when it comes to Bell Biv Devoe. You guys are constantly CD - Well, I just want to thank the three of you for touring all over the world, and you dropped an taking the time to talk with me today—and I can album last year called Three Stripes. It's the first speak for a lot of people in this building, and in this album that you've dropped in over 15 years where town, when I say that we can't wait to see the show you collaborated with SWV and Boyz II Men on a on October 5th. few tracks. What made you all decide to get back in MB - Hey, Charles, let me say this—if we can put this in the interview? When I touch down in that city, that the studio again? RB - What's interesting with music is that as an artist day... and i'm saying this to anyone reading this. If and as a creator, you're in different modes, different there's anybody with the last name Bivins, tell them to vibes based on where you are at in your life. You're please introduce themselves. My grandmother is from grown. You're married. You have a family now, and Macon, Georgia.
For us, we have that challenge of wanting it to sound new and fresh—but we can't remake “Poison”. That was for that time and for that era. That was who we were at that time in our vibe. we're looking at business differently now... being businessmen. And all of that plays into what we are talking about with the groove, you know? What the groove is and does, it matches your personality and who you are as a person at that time. And it's hard to really predict that timing and if people are ready to hear new music from you at that time. With BBD, it's kinda like we have this blessing—and somewhat of a curse. Whereas, you know, as big as “Poison” has been for us, it's like we're always held to that standard of what people want to hear from BBD. For us, we have that challenge of wanting it to sound new and fresh—but we can't remake “Poison”. That was for that time and for that era. That was who we were at that time in our vibe. But for us, we like to perform, as Ron said. We're always doing shows, traveling around
CD - Are you serious? MB - Yes. Real talk, man. She's a white lady. My great grandmother was white. She met my grandfather, Robert. They married and moved up north. So I have blood, and I've got family lines in Macon. And if they didn't find me through the ancestry, maybe they could find me that night at the concert. CD - You have my guarantee. That will be in the interview. I guarantee you that. Bell Biv Devoe and Bobby Brown will be in Macon on October 5th at the Macon Centreplex for the RBRM Tour along with Case and DJ Kid Capri. LAWRENCE BY CHARLES DAVIS
There was a time when you could say, “I listen to pop music”— and you didn’t have to hang your head in shame. These days? Not so much. The genre has an image problem. People say that the live instrumentation of pop is dead, it’s computer generated, and it lacks a depth of songwriting. The band Lawrence is out to change that. Dynamic brother and sister duo Clyde and Gracie Lawrence are backed by a collection of some of the baddest musicians in the game today. Clyde Lawrence has been playing piano and writing songs since the age of six. That’s right, six. He wrote a song for Sandra Bullock’s 2000 film Miss Congeniality, making him the youngest person to ever be accepted into the Songwriters Guild of America. And then, there’s Gracie. Clyde has been quoted as saying, “Gracie came out of the womb ready for the spotlight”. Gracie’s vocal talent and ability are “once-in-a-generation good”. She started acting & singing on theatre stages and on TV shows like The Good Wife. Clyde and Gracie spent their childhood years listening to and studying Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin, absorbing bits of soul, funk, blues, and R&B into every fiber of their being. All of this immense talent has manifested into a funky, mesmerizing eight-piece band made up of childhood friends that are shattering the notion of what popular music can be 40 SEPTEMBER 28–OCTOBER 5, 2018 18
while selling out venues at every stop. Their latest album Living Room, which debuted at #2 on the iTunes R&B/Soul charts, is a 13-track journey through the highs and lows of living and loving in modern times. The band wrote the songs from their living room in Brooklyn, New York. Living Room perfectly opens with the song “More”, a brassfilled track stacked with tight harmonies. On “Make A Move”, Gracie sings about the double standard of a woman making the first move in a relationship, while Clyde and the rest of the band lay down backing vocals and instrumentation reminiscent of Morris Day & The Time. With the funky way that Clyde masterfully plays the keys, you can hear Stevie Wonder and Roger Troutman within 5 seconds of “The Heartburn Song”. He also shines on the heartbreaking “Too Easy”, where he recalls the end to an emotionally unbalanced relationship. The seven-minute finale, “The Last Song”, is the highlight. Gospel and R&B peppered vocals, heavy blues guitar licks & drum work, and a powerful, unequivocal intention to never write about another former lover again. Lawrence is changing the narrative of what popular music can be, probably should be, and will be if more artists perform and record with the same heart, soul, and dedication.
