Helicopter landing, bus explosion, car wrecks... it’s all happening on Second Street in Downtown Macon
This weekend, Jan. 8-13, Macon-Bibb County will once again be used as a location for the filming of a movie. Working with Garden Films Productions, LLC, portions of the movie The Fifth Wave will be filmed in the areas around Cotton Avenue and Second Street. It is anticipated that this filming will have a direct impact of more than $400,000, from hotel rooms to extra pay to catering to fuel consumption to other services. In order to accommodate this filming, portions or all of several streets will be closed for periods of time, and that schedule is listed below. For a map of the closures, click here. Should there be any changes, this map will be updated. “It’s hard to express how delighted we are to again be the site of filming! From Trouble with the Curve to 42 to Need for Speed, we are becoming recognized, not just as Film Ready, but Film Friendly,” says Macon-Bibb County Mayor Robert Reichert. “It’s because of the work of the Film Commission and our departments, and for the cooperation of residents and businesses, that are continuing to bring filmmakers here.” Leading up to this filming, Garden Films has met with Macon-Bibb (Including the Macon Film Commission, Sheriff ’s Office, the Fire Department, Parks & Beautification, Main Street Macon, Mayor’s Office, Facilities Management, and more) on several occasions

to help work through all of the details. In addition, Garden Films hosted a meeting for residents and businesses to let them know what is being planned, answer any questions, and address any possible concerns. Since those meetings, letters have been distributed to people in the designated areas, and the company has reached out personally to property owners and businesses. “We are elated that another movie will be filming in Macon next month. We will assist the production with whatever they may need from us,” says Terrell Sandefur with the Macon Film Commission. “One thing we’d like to let the public know for a crowd control issue is that the lead actress (Chloe Grace Moretz) will not be in Macon filming this sequence.”

Mercer University Opera Presents Handel’s Alcina Jan. 15-18
The Mercer University Opera will present Handel’s Alcina in Fickling Hall on Mercer’s Macon campus Jan. 15-18. The show will be presented Jan. 15-17 at 7:30 p.m. and Jan. 18 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each. All college students with valid student I.D. and Mercer faculty and staff may obtain one free ticket. “I am thrilled that we are able to start the new year by presenting Alcina to Middle Georgia audiences! This is a colorful, mysterious and exciting piece with lots of vocal and dramatic fireworks and absolute sheer beauty of sound,” said Mercer Opera Director Martha Malone. Much like last year’s Mercer Opera production of The Magic Flute, Alcina is full of fantasy and intrigue. The title character is a wicked, seductive sorceress who traps shipwrecked men on her enchanted island, and the show tells the story of a young woman’s heroic quest to break Alcina’s magic love-spell and rescue her enslaved lover. “If you love fantasy and stories like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, you will love this opera as well. Through terrific costumes, scenery, dancing and music, this show will captivate the audience,” Malone said. Costumes for this production were designed and created by Shelley Kuhen, with set design by Zach Broome. Music Director Richard Kosowski will lead the Townsend School of Music woodwind and string students and Mercer Choir. Handel’s opera Alcina was first presented in London in 1735. Centuries later, this masterpiece is still enticing audiences with its characters and music. For tickets and more information, call the Townsend School of Music at (478) 301-2748. 11thHourOnline.com 05

Pure Barre: How I Found my Abs (and Lost my Soul)
Pure Barre
Pure Barre lifts your seat, tones your thighs, abs and arms, tapers in your hips and burns fat in record breaking time. In just 10 classes clients see results. Hours of Operation: Hours Vary by class times. Full schedule available at: purebarre. com/ga-macon Location: 4420 Forsyth Rd., Suite 140
Pure Barre is a low-impact workout and can be done by women and men of all shapes, sizes, and ages.
Why Choose Pure Barre? Pure Barre is the fastest, most effective way to change the shape of your body- it’s that simple. Pure Barre is safe to do every day, because all the movements are small, isometric movements that do not compromise your joints in any way. For optimal results, we recommend taking class 3-4x per week. Pure Barre is not just a workout, it is a lifestyle and everyone who walks through our doors is part of a community that we refer to as our “Pure Barre Family.”
What classes do you offer? Is it for guys AND Gals? We offer 34 classes per week with varying times to fit any schedule. There are not levels of classes, clients simply start where they are physically and with time begin to challenge themselves more throughout the workout. While the flow of the class is always the same, no client will ever take the same class twice as we are constantly changing the exercises and incorporating new movements. While most of our clients are women this safe workout is perfect for both men and women of any age (over the age of 16). Men see exceptional results and many use Pure Barre to cross train for other activities such as running and biking. I’m a beginner, is Pure Barre for me? Pure Barre is designed for any fitness level. We have modifications for every exercise we do and if a client needs modifications to use as they work to build their strength and stamina, we work with them to ensure they get the most out of their 55 minute Pure Barre Class. In under 10 classes clients are amazed with the results they see and each class how they are able to improve. What kind of personal attention to you offer? Though the classes are group classes, each client receives one on one attention throughout each class. The teacher sets up each exercise and then circulates the room correcting form and helping clients and challenging clients to get the most out of their 55 minutes at the barre. Teachers are available before and after class to answer additional questions clients may have. We also offer a monthly
- Whitney Berry, owner
breaking down the barre class, to break down the class and provide a refresher of the movements to new and veteran clients. What qualifications do your trainers have? Each teacher is required to go through Pure Barre training to gain full understanding of the technique and how to best teach clients. Continued monitoring and additional training continues even after teachers have passed all tests allowing them to teach. What’s a cheat day like for you? Once a week treat- often times this comes in the form of a small something sweet from The Casserole Shop Bakery next door. A healthy lifestyle is all about being reasonable and finding balance. Allowing yourself to have rewards and treats along the way is critical. If you don’t have “cheats” it is not something that becomes a lifestyle and a permanent fixture in your life, it is simply a trend. What is your philosophy for staying healthy? Staying healthy is about taking care of yourself and being happy with who you are and feeling comfortable in your own skin. Finding the right balance of work and play is a key piece to this. Health is physical and emotional, we promote both of these elements at Pure Barre Macon. Contact information: 478.757.8561 macon@purebarre.com

I am a working mother, which means both that I have a job that requires my regular attention and physical presence, and that my body has birthed two children who require the same. When I got pregnant (surprise!) at age 25, I was tan, toned, and skinny as hell. I ran all over the place. I practiced yoga when I wanted a break. You get the point. Well (long sigh), that was then, and this is now. The now in which childbirth has left me wary terrified of high impact exercise… even if I could afford to pay a babysitter so I could pay to take an exercise class… even if I could drag my lazy a$$ there after faculty meetings and the grocery store and baseball practice and choir rehearsal. But sometime last winter, after the convenience of swimming pool season had ended (watching kids while tiring them out while simultaneously swimming and making myself tan is the quad-fecta of efficient motherhood), I noticed my thighs didn’t fit so nicely into my favorite jeans. My favorite article of clothing became my parka. If heart attacks over case deadlines counted as cardio, I’d be set. But as they don’t (or at least not in a way that translates into toning my jiggly upper arms), something had to be done. A sympathetic friend reminded me of the “Pure Barre craze sweeping the nation,” and that, as part of a promotional offer, our first class was free. The studio was out in Suburban Strip Mall No-Man’s Land, but otherwise I figured I couldn’t lose. I was warned that we would need to purchase socks for the first class. That’s all I knew. How much I would learn. I showed up for that first, free class way I dress for anything that’s not work or a date: wearing my glasses and leggings and a tank top that were fitted and cute about fifteen years ago. My hair was dirty. I signed in, scratched out a waiver, and found the requisite socks. Eighteen dollars. Eight.Teen.Dol.Arssssss. That price tag is acceptable for *at least two glasses of wine (depending of quality of the vintage). But socks? Come on. I stashed my shoes in a little cubby (they’d be easy to find later since they were the only not-Uggs there) and went into the studio. There were mirrors on two sides of the room and they reflected women in color-coordinated Lululemon workout attire and perfect chignons. Everyone was blonde. So this is where all the suburban housewives had been hiding; this was their natural habitat! I sat cross-legged for a stretch and caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror; my t-shirt looked even more faded than I remembered and I am pretty sure there was a hole in the crotch of my leggings. My hair was sticking out of my ponytail at weird angles. I looked down at my socks. They had sticky pads on the bottom; I was a frumpy tree frog. My first session was the best abdominal workout I’ve ever had… but not necessarily because of the planned movements. It was because I laughed hysterically through the whole thing. The instructor made these hilarious jokes: “Stand on your highest tiptoes, sink down like you’re sitting in a chair, bring your right toe to touch your left ear, and tuck your pelvis in.” Um, wut. Later exercises were just as difficult. (“Stand on your highest tiptoes, balance without the barre, smile, breathe, stand up straight, perform kegel exercises, make sure your movements are very tiny. Try not to fall over. Repeat.”) Even the seemingly-easy parts got hard after a few reps. It was only after my first few humiliating sessions that I started to read the articles glowing about the efficacy and elegance of the workouts. They all follow the same trajectory brainwashed pattern: OH MY GOD IT WAS SO HARD… OH MY GOD I KIND OF FEEL SKINNIER… OH MY GOD I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT IT! I even read a piece praising PB that admitted, “staying in shape is like my part-time job.” Well, like, taking care of my kids is like the part-time job I have after I, like, come home from my full-time job. But still, who wants a saggy booty come swim-suit season? Not I. Even if I will still be a brunette at the end of the day. The music, tailored (like the active wear) to Pure Barre exercises, is Top Ten Hit(s)… or Miss. It’s poppy enough to move around to, but this is shite I would never listen to in my real life. As the months wore on, my form improved somewhat, as did my ability to actually complete the moves without collapsing. I will say in my least sourgrapesy way that Pure Barre is the best workout I’ve ever had. My trunk retained its junk… but it moved a little higher and tighter; my arms got leaner; my legs got less jiggly. But as much as it worked wonders on my body, and I have to give it props for that, my integration into the social scene of it started to worry me. I started washing my face and brushing my teeth before the workouts. I asked for hot workout clothes for my birthday. WHO WAS I BECOMING? When I caught myself thinking these thoughts, when I – just a few months earlier—had been that gauche woman breaking all the rules—I started to wonder about the risks of my joining this class very helpful cult. I was getting skinnier, but at what cost? Back to that, I had to face that I simply cannot afford the classes. What good is being skinny and toned if I could never afford a babysitter or nights out to flaunt my new body? And so, despite its many wonders and benefits, I have discovered that while I’m not a crossfit gal, I’m probably not a PB beauty either. I just don’t have the money or the disposition to fit in; at the end of the day, I’m just an urban, tattooed, brunette single mom without a diamond ring or a four-pack. Now where’s my parka? 11thHourOnline.com 11

Every single one of our trainers and coaches all started as beginners at some point so we know what it is like to set goals and evolve over time NOT over night. What kind of personal attention does your gym offer? Our staff knows the majority of members by their first names and can state what their specific health goals are and how far they have come along in achieving them. Our attention to their needs is a number one priority for us and this in evident when you walk in the door and see the celebrations of success of members posters on our walls. Lisa Hichkad has conquered the world of Powerlifting, Richard Harrison is a Spartan Trifecta Champion, Edrico Wallace and Lindsey Childs have incredible body transformation stories. Each member joins Body Evolution and Gorilla CrossFit not only because they are ready to make a change in their health and fitness level but because they are serious about it and do it and our staff happen to be the fortunate ones chosen to aid in their journey! What qualifications do your trainers have? Each one of our trainers is certified in their field of specialization as well as AED/CPR certified. But almost more important than a piece of paper saying they know their stuff are the years of experience each of them has personally achieving their goals, being trained by other trainers, seeking out further education, and the knowledge gained from helping individual members achieve their desired transformations. One of the best ways to choose the right trainer isn’t simply based on their paper certifications but whether or not they also walk the walk! Anyone can pass an exam, but a truly motivating and successful trainer is one who has walked in your shoes, come out on the other side, and knows how to pull you through! What is a cheat day for you? Cheat?!?! Is there such a thing? I love pizza and beer and chocolate but who doesn’t! It is about eating clean and healthy 41 meals out of the week and embracing that 42nd meal in carb and fat heaven! 12 JANUARY 8 - 22, 2015

CrossFit is just one of the great options we offer but we are more about providing our clients with the best options that will achieve their specific goals! What are your thoughts on living a healthy lifestyle? To Kelly Johnson it means to be able to hike the mountain on her mission trips to Haiti. For Quia Wilson it means being one step ahead of cancer. Hours of Operation: Open six days a week, check class schedule online at purebalancemacon.com Location: Downtown Macon the corner of Poplar and Second Street. Actual address is 505 second street. Park on Poplar, walk into the iron gate, and studio is on the left. Tell us your philosophy on staying healthy? Practice yoga which has a ripple effect on emotional and mental health, on relationships, and living in this world. Yoga practice teaches one to stay in the present moment, do not dwell in the past, and do not long for the future. I believe that one should eat properly and in moderation, exercise in moderation, control stress, breathe, 7-8 hours of sleep a night, don’t smoke. Moderation is the key. Don’t deny any food type.. Most folks start out trying to do to much at one time and cannot maintain the pace. I love yoga because it combines stress relief, exercise and breathing exercises. Yoga practice cultivates a mind-body connection. Modern society does not allow for connection with our bodies and minds. One becomes at dis-ease. Yoga connects mind-body and establishes a feelings of well being. Yoga is a practice and uses postures and breathing to connect to the self, the inner, and the outer self. I’ve never worked out, or I haven’t in a really long time, Is Yoga for me? Most definitely. Most folks think they must be flexible to do yoga or do those crazy poses that the media love to portray. Yoga is not about getting in a certain position it is a life style change. Most folks when under stress do not breathe deep enough. Yoga teaches us how to breathe when we are in a difficult posture i.e. situation. Yoga is a life long endeavor. One must give yoga at least 3-4 classes to begin to feel the benefits of yoga. Do I burn calories doing yoga? Most definitely. I have lost about 10 pounds doing yoga and have kept it off. I have developed upper body strength, I notice when my body is tense in difficult situations and have learned to breathe and release that tension. Do you offer different classes? Purebalance offers a variety of classes from
beginners to the most advanced. We have gentle yoga classes, yoga quickie lunch time classes, strenuous yoga classes described as flow yoga, restorative slow deep stretch, There is a special class for men only called, Men who do not bend.....Men who can bend can attend as well. For the year 2015 there will be a specific class for post traumatic stress disorder and the mind-body connection. What qualifications do your instructors have? Our instructors are Registered Yoga Teachers 200 hour. One of the instructors is beginning the 300 hour instructor program. Dean has just been authorized as a Yoga Warrior Instructor which is for people suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.

It changes the way one relates to people and their environment. When I take time to sit and meditate on the day, enjoy being in the present moment, I am practicing yoga. I do not have to change into certain clothes, get on equipment, and work up a sweat to practice yoga.

When did you start doing fitness? Personally, I was really overweight as a kid, growing up. Diabeties is rampant in my family, both my brother and my sister have it. So I got into fitness pretty young, when I was about 12. I grew up in New York, but I slowly gravitated South. What are the advantages of Kinetix? The main difference between us and everyone else is that we are very family oriented, and results oriented. We don’t just point the way to the treadmill and tell you to have fun, we try to give a more personal experience and attention. We give one fitness assessment to every member per month, if they want it. We’ll track your weight and your measurements, take you through a workout, whatever we can do to help. We are there. What qualifications do your trainers have? Most of our trainers NASM or ISSA certified. I also have my Bachelors Degree in exercise science, as well as being certified. Several of our managers also have their bachelors degree or higher in Exercise science. What classes does Kinetix offer? We have Les Mills Classes. Basically we pay to be able to offer those classes, and what that means is that our instructors are following that regimen. They can’t just come in and make up whatever they want. It insures that our classes get results. What awards has Kinetix won? The last few years we’ve won the “Best Health Club” in the Macon Telegraph. What is your personal philosophy for living health? I was big into bodybuilding when I was young, and like I said I ended up getting a degree in exercise science. The thing I did wrong in the past, was not enough balance. I was either working out too much and not eating enough, or not working out enough and eating too much. Either way I think you have to find a balance for your lifestyle and your goals. You don’t have to come in here six days a week for 2 hours a day. You are just going to burn yourself out. Don’t deprive yourself so much you fall off the deep end and eat way too much one day. Usually, if you have a craving for a food you are missing some nutrient. You need certain things. You have to find balance. What is a cheat day for you? Well, I try not to have a cheat day. I try to indulge without overindulging these days. But when I was really into bodybuilding, my cheat day was sweets. Now what I’ve found is that when I don’t restrict myself SO much I don’t ever feel the need for a cheat day. 14 JANUARY 8 - 22, 2015
When did you get fitness minded? I started doing fitness for myself when I was very young and I started wrestling, year round training was always a requirement. I really developed a passion for fitness when I was around 14 and I started to pack on muscle for the first time and actually see the results of my workouts. I’m a beginner interested in MMA? We were all beginners at one point. Everyone that walks through these doors is a beginner in some shape, form or fashion. All of our programs are fit and suited for the beginner. No prior experience is needed Tell our readers about your trainers? We carry a 1 coach per 10 student ratio during our training sessions. Personal detail and attention is key in the development of each athlete. We also offer private training for those who want to work on specific criteria and need further details or development All of our coaches are currently or were previous champions in their respective fields. All of our professional team coaches are actually professional athletes themselves with experience of 10 plus years. We have the most qualified group of instructors in all of middle Georgia boasting two Hall of Fame coaches in Georgia as well as Division 1 athletes. What is a cheat day for you? A cheat day for me is not having to wake up at 4 a.m. To be at the gym by 4:30. I also would get to enjoy some time with my cars, which is a job in itself. What classes does Rush MMA offer? We offer classes in mixed martial arts, boxing, muay Thai kickboxing, wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, kids BJJ, women’s kickboxing, Spartan group training, as well as strength and conditioning with Eric Kling. What is your personal philosophy for living health? A healthy lifestyle is just like deciding how much gas to put in your tank, how far do you really want to go on this trip in life. Most people want to go as far as they possibly can but only put a quarter of a tank of gas in their car. Healthy living is year round effort. But it shouldn’t be a burden on anyone like it’s made out to be. If you don’t like running on a treadmill or sitting on a weight machine, then dont. Rather, find something that you love that is fitness oriented. That’s what 99% of our members are, fitness minded, not fight minded. No matter what your choices are, find a passion that implements a healthy lifestyle. That’s what I love about MMA, you can’t be a slouch and survive, it requires consistency and work ethic, which everyone possesses in them, they just have to see it. What awards has Rush MMA won? We as a gym were nominated as top five gyms in middle GA by Macon Telegraph, Gym of the Year in the 11th Hour and inducted into the GA MMA Hall of Fame in 2013.

President Obama and Cuba
Last week President Obama began stabilizing relations with Cuba for the first time in over 50 years. Ever since President Kennedy began the embargo in 1960 on “Cuber”, as he pronounced it, Americans have been restricted from entering the tiny island 90 miles from Florida and importing their cigars.
Conversely, Cubans have not been allowed to purchase American items and basically the only thing they can get into the United States has been really damn good baseball players. (Luis Tiant and Bert Campaneris will always be my favorite Cuban players, but Yoenis Cespedes would be right up there with him if the A’s hadn’t traded him to the Red Sox and then the Red Sox traded him to the Tigers. That’s another column unto itself.) When I heard this, the first thing I asked myself was, “Why now?” I mean Cuba has been relatively quiet over the past decade or so, especially since Cuban leader Fidel Castro has or hasn’t died. I personally think he’s been dead for a few years and his brother Raul is afraid to tell the people in fear of a revolt. The only possible reason I can think of for doing this at this time, beyond the fact that a lame duck President generally does a lot of things that generally pisses people off, is that he just virtually locked up Florida for the Democrats in the 2016 election. He also just pushed former Florida Governor Jeb Bush directly into the 2016 GOP race for the nomination, who along with Florida’s United States Senator Marco Rubio, may be the only two Republicans who could win Florida, an almost must have state if the GOP hopes to gain the White House back. Now granted, dealing with Cuba again does have its’ appeal as now we can flood the Cuban market with everything from American bubble gum to new American made automobiles, but as columnist Charles Krauthammer has pointed out, normalization of relations with China and Vietnam hasn’t done anything for Democracy in those countries, so why should we expect any huge difference in Cuba? The answer is that there won’t be any difference. The United States is about the last country on earth that isn’t already smoking Cuban cigars and it hasn’t done anything to restore democracy in Cuba yet. Further, as like in most of the things President Obama has done in foreign relations, it was a one-sided deal, much like the
traded five Taliban criminals for Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. The United States gets nothing out of this other than being able to send products to a country that has severe human rights issues and can’t afford the smoke off of a hot dog. If anything is imported into the United States from Cuba, you can bet the average Cuban worker won’t benefit from it as any profits will go to the Cuban Government who owns most industries. Currently, Cuba imports over 1/3 of all of its’ imported goods from Venezuela, a country still filled with corruption, even though its’ leader Hugo Chavez passed away a little over a year ago. (Remember Hugo? It was Hugo that former Macon Mayor Jack Ellis wanted to have “solidarity” with.) China gets the next 10% or so and the United States currently gets about 4 ½% of the import trade. If you think that will change much, I have a fantastic bridge to sell you. Senator Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants himself, probably said it the best during his reaction to the President’s plan when he said, “It’s part of a long record of coddling dictators and tyrants that this administration has established.” Rubio further has insisted that the White House’s plans, which include opening an embassy in Havana, will not result in more economic freedom or democracy in Cuba, a country that has survived decades under a U.S. embargo. Rubio continued, “This notion that somehow being able to travel more to Cuba, to sell more consumer products, the idea that’s going to lead to some democratic opening is absurd. But it’s par for the course with this administration constantly giving away unilateral concessions … in exchange for nothing.” Agreed Senator. I hope that we are both wrong for a lot of different reasons, but mainly I hope we’re wrong because of the Cuban people. Cuba is a beautiful country with a proud population that is still driving American made cars from the pre-embargo 50’s era, broke as a sailor on his last day of shore leave. I hope for their sake this works, but I’m not holding my breath. 11thHourOnline.com 15

A Healthy, Growing 2015 Pulling back the curtain on the first round of the open house for the Macon Action Plan reveals that there is a certain optimism that pervades the almost 400 unique participants in the planning process. People are excited for where things are going in Macon, they see the activity and meet it with optimism. There is one particular area, though, that people specifically address as both key to where we are now and where we are going—food. The fact that so many people the main reason they use downtown is food and that what would entice them to come more often is more food speaks to something very positive. Towns that have seen great strides in urban revitalization have done so on the backs of pioneering restauranteurs who stake the first claim on the burgeoning customer base. Towns like Athens have been completely reborn thanks to a food culture that has separated itself from the bar and college culture that dominated that community, attracting with it more residents, retail, and tourism dollars. Asheville, NC, one of my personal favorite cities, carved a new niche for itself by being a culinary destination on top of its resort reputation. This culinary enterprise helped change the culture of the “townies” making the community all the more attractive craft breweries which has become a leading industry in the state. And Charleston, SC, a place that doesn’t have to do anything special to attract hordes of tourists every year, has found a new hook to snare away dollars by becoming one of the nation’s top food cities with budding celebrity chefs everywhere you look. These chefs, so well revered and funded, are taking the charge in revitalizing new areas of the city, away from the tourist district, to serve the residents of the city that supported them first in new a better ways. There are countless more examples (think of the way the Atlanta narrative
has changed recently) that make me even more encouraged by what we are seeing here in Macon. We are so lucky in Macon to have so many independent restauranteurs who have taken the plunge. It is hard to imagine what downtown would look like with the pillars of our community who stepped up in down times to invite you back to the heart of the community. The next step is for all of us to make it part of the Macon story in a bigger way, not only by voting with our wallets (making an enlightened self-interested decision to support local businesses who return more money to the local economy), but with our pride. We have to tell others about the gems we have here, support them, and help them evolve. We should simply support them because they are local, we should support the locals for being good. This is the way the feedback loop works, you vote with your presence, your wallet, your decisions, and your stories, and the market responds accordingly. And just like when you were growing up and you wanted dessert, but you had to clean your plate first, in order to support more nice things, we have to support the good things we have. Such is the nature of a community and why the feedback given to business and efforts like the Macon Action Plan are so important. We all have to hear what you want and what you will support going forward. It’s the only way to grow. Thank you to those who have taken the plunge and made Macon such a delicious place to live. Here’s to healthy, growing 2015!

DOWNTOWN
Those Devilish Details I never wavered in my support of the consolidation of the governments of the City of Macon and Bibb County. I actively campaigned for it and was delighted to have the opportunity – finally – to vote in favor. I had earlier voted twice to reduce the size of City Council while I was an elected member, although our legislative delegation at the time ignored our request for them to introduce legislation that would have reduced us from 15 to 9 (I had actually supported seven but would have been happy to take what I could get). resounding, “No!” If commissioners have the courage of their convictions, let them vote to override that 20% reduction as they are enabled to do in the consolidation legislation. As I also wrote at the time, “I’m guessing that the newly-elected commissioners in the consolidated government might be reluctant to exercise their power to overturn that requirement of a 20% combined cost reduction when it doesn’t appear in five years’ time. Looking toward their own re-election, they might be hesitant to exercise that right when it directly contravenes the stated reasons for consolidating our two governments.” They’ve already successfully asked the legislators to make the baseline year the last one instead of this one, since they’ve laudably saved about $5 million in this year’s budget and wish to go back to a prior year that gives them more wiggle room for the future. They’ve also voted to refinance some long-term debt that actually does save us money in the first few years before the interest rate most probably goes up (but who cares, since that is beyond the current commissioners’ term, right?). I’m not advocating for or against reducing or eliminating that 20% reduction requirement. What I’m suggesting is that they man up (sorry, Elaine) and not try to push the issue off onto somebody else. You want our legislative delegation to take action because you’re afraid of doing so. Why not ask our legislators to go ahead and approve the city-county budget so they can take the hits for having to cut favorite organizations and departments? Of course you would be foolish to abdicate that responsibility since it is one of the few remaining left to the commission. For the same reason you shouldn’t be asking them to take this hot button issue off your plate (“Let this cup pass from me.”). Commissioners, do what you were elected to do even if you ruffle some feathers. That’s why you were elected.

The only issue I raised during all the consolidation campaign was the requirement that the combined spending of the two consolidated governments be reduced by 20% within five years. As I wrote in one editorial, “the plan requires a 20% cut in combined expenditures of the two governments within five years, although that requirement can be dismissed at the time by the elected body if the financial target has not been achieved. What happens if, with a view to their own re-election chances, they don’t vote to override? There is no provision for “unconsolidating,” so does a judge step in and order an across-the-board cut to meet the requirement? Does even one citizen sue because his/her vote for consolidation was based upon that assurance?” Unfortunately, I raised the question so often that more than a few people rolled their eyes as soon as I raised my hand at public meetings. But, to be clear, no one ever answered the question. Now our current Macon-Bibb Commission members have suddenly found themselves in the perplexing position of having to deal with the issue. At first, one of our legislators theorized that it was a “drafting mistake” made by some bureaucratic employee at the Capitol in the many drafts of the bill and could easily be fixed in the next legislative session. Not likely a mistake, particularly since everyone urged support for consolidation specifically because of the required savings. Go back and look at any of the campaign flyers and commercials. Now, those same Commission members have unanimously asked our legislative delegation to introduce a bill to reduce that requirement from 20% to 10%. As one of them was accurately reported as saying during that recent debate, “Consolidation was also based upon retaining all of our employees.” Really? Can you show me anywhere that voters were assured that all employees of both governments would be retained in a consolidated government? I’m sure I can answer that question with a

NATIVE / NEW BY ANGEL COLLINS
If you’ve ever been to Grant’s, it is the dirtiest bar in the best way. The smoke from cigarettes drifts up and seeps into the walls. In the corner, in chairs beat up from years of use, is a threesome, the woman mock whispering to the men about how good she has it with her man in bed. In the back room is the persistent clang of pool balls and the soft whir that conversation becomes as it crosses the bar. Yet this hole in the wall has been the center of southern rock, soul, and blues in Macon, Georgia for more years than most readers have been alive. It is here you’ll find Orlando Randall, or Doski Wo as Macon has come to know him, setting up for his weekly event, Grant Jammatron. Orlando grew up in East Macon. “It’s a neighborhood that really doesn’t exist anymore. Only a few houses off Emory Highway across the street from the Health Clinic.” He was in gifted and REACH classes in elementary school. A graduate of Northeast High School, he starts the conversation about the impact of hip hop by talking about Breakin’, a movie about a ballerina who enters the world of break dancing. “I was intrigued with the movie Breakin’. Breakin’ is like the culture of the whole music thing when I was young. Then rap came into play. I mean, if you were into music back then,” says 39 year old Doski, “you had the music of your parents if you listen to old school RnB or if you watched videos it was rock. When rap showed up it was like this new thing. I remember seeing the Beastie Boys do hip hop for the first time. It was never like a black thing. It was like, shit, just seeing what they had reminded me of watching Beat Streets. There were blacks, whites, and puerto ricans you know. It wasn’t just black people. It was hip hop.” Doski’s path followed music. He began by singing in choirs in school. “I was in chorus, choirs, Macon Boy’s Choir, stuff like that,” said Doski. “In high school I was in a singing group called NE Heartbreak. It was just like that, singing shit and it’s cool but then Tupac. You got “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday” versus anything Tupac. It was edgy. When you’re 8 your voice ain’t the same shit as when you’re 14 or 15. I mean, your outlook. My outlook was more like, ‘hey, I want to rebel.’ When that shit came out I said I don’t want to sing. I want to rap.” He began by doing freestyle rap battles at Club Cadillac. His original rap name, DAN, was given to him by the MC of the rap battles as a description of his drunken nature at the time. “I’m not a goody two shoes guy. They would pay us in beer. I drank a lot. That’s what we did. One time, the whole club wanted to fight me. The Bloods from Pleasant Hill was trying to fight me. It was on some 24 JANUARY 8 - 22, 2015
bullshit really. Anyway one night they had a shootout, inside and outside, and I was like naw. A lot of stuff was going down in the streets and in the drug world and I was like it’s too much. Muthafuckers ain’t surviving, they’re going to jail, and I just wanted to escape that. I could have been in jail, you know what I mean,” said Doski. “That’s when you change and just want to have some fun with the music. Just bring back some lyricism and some fun.” Doski Wo’s dedication to helping others started years ago. “When I got my little stage, when I first came out downtown, I wanted to bring on all the misfits. I remember Floco getting booed at Sinsation and Al K!ng, well people weren’t feeling what they were doing. They were like the misfits. I tip my hat to those guys now. They’re doing it.” Doski didn’t want to stop helping others. So when he started Jammatron, he wanted to help others who didn’t really get a stage to find a place to perform, to grow professionally, to get better, and to grow a crowd of fans they could take wherever they go. “Jammatron is my event, but I hardly rap. This is for others. Initially, It was a competition with 3 artist each week, but you couldn’t be in the same crew. It had to be totally different artists and you had 3 different crowds coming. If each person brought out 10 people, that was a possible 20 fans you could add for yourself. It was a competition, but it got fucked up a lot because things weren’t being done fairly. At least that’s what the artists thought. Someone from Maine could just be walking down the street and be the dopest MC, but if someone is wack and brought the most people, the wack person could win. That’s bullshit.” Jammatron was just a dream before he connected with Grant’s Lounge. “I said I was going to hit every spot downtown and whatever night they weren’t doing something, I was going to try to do something. I really wanted to put some music back in the city. A few places told me no, we don’t do hip hop, we don’t do live music, but I’ve been to hip hop shows at their spot, but suddenly they don’t do hip hop?” asked Doski. “Then I came to Nomad (Man of Many Hats at Grant’s) and he was like, hell yeah, let me talk to these people and we started doing it.” Despite what he’s done in his career, he is eager to help as many up and coming artists find their voice and perfect their craft. “There are so many hip hop/rap artists in Macon,” said Doski. “A new artist is emerging everyday. With social media, youtube, cell phones, home ‘studios,’ etc., it’s not as hard to be an ‘artist’ as it used to be. Spoof rappers will have 20 gazillion trillion youtube hits and the people that are really out there trying to
push good music will have 127 hits. You will share all kinds of stuff/info on social media, but will never click a button to help promote the music career of someone they actually know. The support usually comes after the fame. I got sidetracked. If I were to just narrow the selection down to those that have performed at Jammatron (about 55 artists/acts), to name only a few would still be a grand task because I am going to leave some names off unless you want all 55 names. Those names left off are still dope artists. AND… there are some DOPE artists that haven’t performed at jammatron (yet). Macon has so much talent and I’m only talking rap right now. To name a few: JaLon Blac, Bobby P. Whitfield, Ket D.O., J Dot Booze (of Sophisticated Misfits), Prophit Williams, Androyd87, Nicc Baggz, Fi Chief, Billie Slum, Syn Soundz, ReVa Donna (the illest female MC), Goodie Supreme, SoSa SoSicc, and Allah’s Apprentice… There really are too many to list.” Outside of rap there are a few local musicians that he would love to create with. “I wanna do some shit with Willie D and them,” said Doski. “Also, Rolybots, MagTard, Citizen Insane, Robot Folk Junkies, the ORIGINAL Nomenclature, Matt Moncrief, Lamar Williams Jr, the Revival (band that LWJr was in), Blak Pearl, JuBee and The Morning After…” He knows some of them aren’t performing anymore, but he’s optimistic anything can happen. You can’t do anything in Macon without feeling some kind of way about the promotion of downtown Macon, especially when it’s not where you live. All it takes is a quick look around. Mark Vanderhoek wrote an opinion piece about going to various neighborhoods to find out how much people loved their neighborhood and found that, even in the most neglected sections, there was a lot of love and pride. Yet some would have you believe that the people in run down areas just don’t care as much as the people in areas being built up. “One thing I would change about Macon is how the city is ran. Everyone is not represented. For one, who represents the youth? Everyone’s best interests are not at hand. Look at East Macon. Ride through the South Side and the West Side. Now look at the DownTown that is being built. Exactly who is it being built for? Who is/will be welcome (wanted) down there? If I made the city’s decisions, I would rent the bug spray trucks and fill them up with Hate Away and just ride through the city spraying and handing out free samples of Dumb Azz Repellant,” Doski laughs but it is obvious he notices and cares about what is happening. “I attended the Outkast ATLast concert reunion tour on the last show date in Atlanta. I watched DJ Shawty Slim dj for B.O.B. and then DJ Cuttmaster Swiff dj for Outkast. On the same stage. And I’m thinking to myself, ‘do you realize both of them have dj’d at Jammatron?’ And Shawty Slim (along with DJ D Money) dj’d the very 1st Jammatron. To me, to have made friends and family that are willing to do these type things for me (and hiphop) are a measure of my success. A visitor at one of my shows once commented that my music makes you feel good to be alive. That’s success. While people are out there boycotting Dunkin Donuts, they can show their support for Grant’s Lounge… its not only Black history, it’s Music history, Macon history, Our History.”

In the early 1920’s, British archaeologists Howard Carter discovered the tomb of King Tutankhamen, a.k.a. King Tut, creating international interest in all things Egyptian. Rumor also has it that the designer of the building was inspired by a visit to Egypt and decided to incorporate Egyptian aesthetics into the structure, inside and out. Needless to say, the term “you’re not from around here” certainly applies to this fantastic historic structure. Positioned across the street from city hall, nestled between the City Auditorium and Rosa Parks Square, I’ve walked past it countless times, enamored by the Egyptian hieroglyphics (it may not be the proper term for this context, but how often does one have the opportunity to use “hieroglyphics” in a sentence?). The first thing that transfixed me about the first act, 100 Watt Horse, is the name. I mean, what exactly is a 100 Watt Horse? A robot? If so, what kind of robot? My best guess: a toy that is not suitable for Santa’s sleigh (unless Mrs. Claus is around and the kids are tucked away…BA.DOOM.CHICK! Tis’ the season to make “Santa being naughty” jokes…) Back to the name: I suppose it doesn’t matter, though the story behind the name is interesting enough. Take the time to head over to 100 Watt Horse’s page to read the history behind their name. As far as the music goes, 100 Watt horse is a solo act (at least on this particular evening). Delay and reverb-drenched guitars (even some claw-hammer playing!), interspersed with (and decidedly well-written) lyrics. Definitely worth another listen. The second act, White Violet, played as I strolled back into the main room. This Athens four-piece threw out a sound peppered with equal parts of “classic Athens” and “modern Athens,” all glued together with a liberal collection of effects. To be frank, even I’m not sure what that means, but these four guys put on a helluva show. Their sound paired really well with the rock n roll laser show; a
laser show that rivaled anything I’ve ever seen at Stone Mountain transforming the giant space from a historic structure into a hip concert venue, as if Indiana Jones gave up the swashbuckling archeologist lifestyle to start a nightclub. The headliners, New Madrid, are another Athens-based band starting to garner some regional/national attention. Another four -piece band whose sound fluctuated from bouncy danceable ditties to tunes with long, hypnotic instrumental stretches (a la Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky) that seemed to capture the feeling of the bitter end of a long night out on the town when your heads floating far above your body to avoid thinking about anything other than a plate full of hash browns from Waffle House. Even with the aforementioned sonic variety, a few things were unchanged throughout their set: reverb-drenched dueling gitfiddles, three-part harmonies, and a sound that has definitely been finely tuned by lots of live performances. I found myself spending a considerable amount of time between sets discussing this beautiful building while sharing ghost stories and I’m not sorry about it. Macon is full of historic buildings and I have a running list of structures that I’ve always wanted to visit. The Shriner’s building is at the top of that list. I know this town doesn’t need another “grand idea for a historic building,” but I can say without question that the main floor needs to be a music venue. I heard more than one concertgoer comment that it was like a tiny Tabernacle (the venue in Atlanta). Whether or not this plan ever comes to fruition, hats off to Corner Concerts (cornerconcerts.com) for a job well done. The main purpose of Corner Concerts is to setup “pop-up” shows throughout the city that highlight forgotten and/or abandoned structures, a kind of rock-n-roll/community awareness/local history lesson concoction that resonates with this writer on several levels.

REBIRTH BRASS BAND, CHRIS KNIGHT, DAM-FI-N0 BAND, KANSAS - IN CONCERT IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS!
FRIDAY, JAN 9 Dam-Fi-No Band @ THE CRAZY BULL DAM-FI-NO is a variety band located in the triad of NC. Made up of Billy Creason, Vernon Jordan, and Chris Ferrell, and Donald Kuhns Wes Heath @ WILD WING CAFE Our old buddy Wes Heath is back in town. He’s a great guitar player, is fun to listen to and plays a great variety of covers and originals that you will enjoy.
SATURDAY, JAN 10 Kansas @ COX CAPITOL THEATRE Fusing the complexity of British prog rock with an American heartland sound representative of their name, Kansas were among the most popular bands of the late ‘70s; though typically dismissed by critics, many of the group’s hits like “Dust in the Widn”remain staples of AOR radio play lists to this day.
that guy that played with The Bobby Whitlock Band, The Brooks Brothers, Moondawg, Midnight Bluez, Cosmic Groove, Soulshine, and The Tony Tyler Trance. Everybody has witnessed his feats of singing, playing the drums, entertaining the audience, and reading the set list all at the same time. Everybody knows this guy can jam.
THURSDAY, JAN 15 Freelance Ruckus @ THE HUMMINGBIRD Mostly influenced by popular rock-n-roll of the sixties and seventies. Modern influences include Sublime, Phish, Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, 311, Rage against the machine, ...you get the idea.
FRIDAY, JAN 16
- Sean Pritchard
Rebirth Brass Band @ COX CAPITOL THEATRE Simply put, The Rebirth Brass Band is an institution. Formed in 1983, the band has long since graduated from the streets of New Orleans to theaters and festivals all over the world. Rebirth is committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands while at the same time incorporating modern music into their show. Their signature brand of heavy funk has placed them among the world’s top brass bands and they are the hands-down favorite among the younger generation. In reference to the sometimes-stringent competition amongst brass bands, Offbeat magazine remarked, “…it’s clear that Rebirth, which boasts 10 albums and has traveled the world, is the band to beat.
John Stanley Band @ Rivalry’s Sports Bar Everybody knows Stan the drummer man from around town. You know Tony Tyler’s dad. You know
Travis Denning @ CRAZY BULL Born out of Middle Georgia, Travis Denning has been crafting his skills as a musician and as a songwriter for
Family & Friends with Dalmatian @ THE HUMMINGBIRD Family and Friends seemingly came out of nowhere right around the turn of the year. At least for me. I caught wind of the Athens-based band after they shared the stage with Saintseneca at the Georgia Theatre in January. I expected most of the buzz from that show to be about Saintseneca, the Columbus, Ohio-based folk-pop group beloved by Dr. Dog and the whole ANTI Records crew. People loved them, but the real stars of the night were Family and Friends.
close to 10 years now. With a powerful voice and a mature musicianship beyond his years, Travis has proven himself as a must see live performer. MidGaLive.com states, “Definitely, Middle Georgia’s next big export!... This dude is going to be the next Keith Urban...” and with good reason to back it up. Travis made the move to Nashville in January 2015 to pursue his dreams, and within the first year has made great steps towards a long career in country music. Atlas Road Crew @ THE HUMMINGBIRD Vintage Rock – It seems this band arrived from another decade as their old school sound oozes vintage 70s rock with a blend of Stones meets the Black Keys. Currently selling out 400-seat venues in their hometown where they enjoy a cult following and already a regular on the fraternity circuit.
SATURDAY, JAN 17 Chris Knight @ COX CAPITOL THEATRE Chris Knight is a singer/ songwriter from the tiny mining town of Slaughters, KY, whose self-titled debut album invited comparisons to Steve Earle and John Prine. Knight started on his musical journey at just three years old when he requested a plastic guitar for Christmas. At 15, he became more serious when he began teaching himself dozens of John Prine songs on his older brother’s guitar. After earning an agriculture degree from Western Kentucky University, Knight went to work in land reclamation, but in 1986 he heard Earle on the radio and decided to try his hand at writing songs. The Result is obvious, he’s heralded as one of America’s greatest songwriters. Go see this show.
