There is a lot going on for the month of October. The show I keep hearing so much about, Reptar at the Cox Capitol Theatre, is probably gearing up as you read this, an outdoor festival at Wesleyan College is happening Saturday. I’ll be exposing my kids ears to some good music while enjoying some of this fall weather. The One City Arts Fest is happening this weekend, and my favorite artist on the planet, Eric Odell, will be showing on Cherry Street downtown. Not to mention it’s FOOTBALL season, and it might even be cold enough to light a fire for the game. The Georgia National Fair is busy erecting itself in Perry, pumpkin patches and corn mazes are opening up everywhere. We almost ran out of room trying to list everything happening here over the next two weeks. Downtown’s newest business Lazy Dog Growler cuts it’s ribbon this week, and I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. My wife’s favorite event of the season, The Historic Macon Flea Market is also happening, meaning that our house will fill up with someone else’s stuff for a while. The Macon Action Plan open House is Friday, and it’s time to give them your input for what’s next in Downtown Macon. Great live music will be pouring out of all our establishments all weekend too, as always, but also this month STYX, ALICE COOPER and RAY LAMONTANGE will be playing the Auditorium. All this, and you shouldn’t even break a sweat doing it. Happy Rocktober!

The Pomp Rock band of America, Styx will be at the Macon City Auditorium on Sunday, Oct. 5. They have been the rage of the seventies and eighties for their progressive rock. Don’t miss the show! Fall is finally here! The month of October usually holds some of the best weather we get to experience in Macon, from cool mornings to mild afternoons and evenings that are just brisk enough for a light sweater. It’s definitely one of the best months for bike riding. Whether you’re a casual biker or a dedicated athlete, the Middle Georgia area offers some amazing biking options. Mountain bikers frequent the Industrial Children’s Home, L.H. Thompson Trails, Arrowhead Park at Lake Tobesofkee, and East Macon Park, while areas in the downtown industrial district offer smooth, wide roads with very little weekend traffic. Bike lanes have been popping up around the College Hill/Downtown neighborhoods and city officials are hard at work researching how to make Macon a more cycle-friendly city. If you don’t have a bike, visit the folks at Bike Tech on Vineville or Cherry St. Cycles on First Street to discuss what bike is right for you. Because of the wonderful weather, it seems like everyone wants to have their outside event during October, so the social calendar may fill up quickly. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.. The newly-opened Lazy Dog Growler hosts their cutting the same evening at 5:00pm (check it out if you haven’t) and the annual “Toast and Taste at the Hay House” will start at 6:00pm. The event features the best of locally produced food and drink, as well as auction items. For more than a decade, the event has served as one of the most successful fundraisers for the house. Tickets are available by calling 478-742-8155. The One City Art Festival kicks off its second year on Thursday the 2nd as well and will run through the 5th. Nine arts organizations around the city are participating in the festival, offering a diverse selection of work from students and professionals. For more information on the festival, visit onecityartfestival.com. On Sunday the 5th, legendary rock group Styx will be performing at the Macon City Auditorium. Best known for hits like “Come Sail Away”, “Lady”, “Mr. Roboto”, the band’s career has spanned more than 40 years and has included more than 15 million albums sold. Limited tickets are still available via the Centreplex
Box Office and Ticketmaster. The national touring production of the Broadway hit “Camelot” will roll into the Grand Opera House on October the 7th for two nights of shows, both at 7:30pm. The critically-acclaimed musical tells the legendary stories of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, Lancelot and others. Tickets are available at thegrandmacon.com Macon’s most active lunch scene returns to The 567 Center on Thursday the 9th. Lunch Beat Macon offers the opportunity to break a sweat on your lunch break, dancing to the beats of various DJs while enjoying a light lunch from Roasted Cafe & Lounge (or bring your own). The event runs from noon - 1pm. On Sunday, October 12th, The Macon Film Guild will be screening “Life Itself”, a renowned documentary recounting the life of film critic Roger Ebert. The New York Times said of the film, “Life Itself is a work of deftness and delicacy, by turns a film about illness and death, about writing, about cinema and, finally, and very movingly a film about love.” Three screenings will occur - 2pm, 5pm, and 7:30pm. Admission is $5. The film is rated R for sexual images, nudity, and language. Cherry Blossom Festival continues with their recently announced Fall events on Thursday, October 23rd with “Spirits in the Courtyard”, a unique arts, antiques, and experiences auction where guests can sample various food and drink, enjoy live music, and participate in a reverse-raffle for the chance to win a custom pink golf cart and trailer valued at more than $10,000! Tickets and information are available at CherryBlossom.com The second annual Macon Octoberfest kicks off the following evening at its new location of Tattnall Square Park. Boasting two days of live music, Georgia-based craft beer, vendors, and food, the event takes the traditional Octoberfest theme and injects it with a shot of Southern charm. More than 15 breweries will be onsite for the weekend and guests can enjoyed performances from The Steeldrivers, The Weeks, Delta Saints, A Thousand Horses and many more! Visit MaconOctoberfest. com for details.

No More Vietnams
It was very hard for several of my Facebook friends to believe a couple of weeks ago, but I actually agreed with President Obama on his handling of the ISIS situation. I even dared to publicly praise his speech on his planned bombings of more Iraqi targets and the spreading of the bombing into Syria, which I feel was without a doubt the best of his Presidency. Further, I think that his actions are justified and are completely in line with what any Republican president might do when faced with the same situation. 11 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Betsy
NATIVE / NEW
1. Coloring relaxes me. I love coloring books, especially the architectural ones. 2. I used to coach girls basketball. 3. I don’t like wearing shoes but I love beautiful shoes. 4. I come from a large family and I wish I could see them every Sunday for lunch like the good ol’ days. 5. At least once a week, I dream of being on the beach with a cool breeze blowing through my hair. 6. My favorite season is Fall. I love the weather, the football (Roll Tide), the sweaters, boots and blue jeans, and I especially love the colors of Fall. 7. I love to clean the house while listening to Otis Redding. I have always loved his music so meeting and being able to see the Redding family often around town has been very surreal for me. 8. I don’t read books as often as I should because once I get involved in a great book I can’t put it down. 9. One of my dreams is to design and build my own cabin. 10. My triplet niece and nephews are the loves of my life. They are the reason I moved to Macon. 11. Animals and art are the two things I am most passionate about.
BETSY CAMPBELL At Home in Her Community by Angel Collins Some people might have a hard time putting the name Betsy Campbell to a face, but if you hear the name and think of either art or animals, nothing would make her happier. Campbell, originally from Augusta, spent a lot of time in Albany and Columbus before heading back to North Augusta to help care for aging grandparents. After 8 years in North Augusta she chose to move to Macon to be closer to her brother. “They had triplets and I had been freelancing in Augusta and I was ready to move out of there so I came up here so I could see the kids more. I was already coming like every other weekend!” The University of Alabama graduate received her B.S. in Interior Design. While
22 OCTOBER 1 - 15, 2014
she didn’t start school wanting to be an Interior Designer, it was the art classes she took that pushed her in that direction. In fact, despite having never taken art classes until she was there, it has informed the direction of her life path. Thinking she would be more of a CAD drafter and a commercial designer, she ended up designing with a commercial dealership. “I haven’t done a lot of residential because it is a bit more difficult with other challenges that commercial design doesn’t have,” said Campbell. She did get a chance to participate in residential design two years ago when she participated in the Historic Macon Idea House on Ash Street. She designed the dining room.
Since those college days (Roll Tide), she has gotten involved in the artistic community, first by being an avid supporter of the First Friday Art Gallery shows and second, by joining the Art Board at St. Francis Episcopal Church/ “The thing about Macon is you have to get out and really go to events, see what’s happening and try to be a part of everything,” said Campbell. “There are a lot of good activities for the things I like to be involved in, like arts or the animal community. I like it. I think the more that I’ve gotten to meet people, the more I feel like its home. There truly are a lot of people who are excited about Macon. You have to kind of put yourself in that group.” She has been in business for 7 years as Betsy Campbell Designs, Inc. and always has design projects going on. Recently, however, while taking a look at the direction her life was going, she made a decision. “I was working in furniture sales and I just decided… I guess when I turned 39 I kind of made this decision that okay I need to start doing what I want and so I started just doing little things here and there that I enjoyed like being on the art board for St. Francis, then I started spending more time with pets and animals and trying to help with the animal community.” It was from these efforts that her pet sitting service, The Pet Nanny Network, was born. “It’s a service that’s needed. It’s not just a job, but it suits my personality because I’m a caregiver and an animal lover and it kind of works. The pet nanny
network is an in home pet care service that works with clients to customize programs to take care of their pets when they are away. We want to be a middle Georgia based business,” said Campbell. Hopefully, the service will do everything from walk your dog to offer weekend care. More than that, Campbell hopes the Pet Nanny Network will become a service to the greater animal community. “We also want to be able to help with the rescue groups so we want to be able to transport. We can pick things up for rescue groups or take an animal to a new place.” Starting the business was pretty seamless for Campbell. “Everybody has been very friendly and it hasn’t taken a long time to do what I needed to do.” To others thinking of starting a business, her advice is simple. “I would say to make sure it is something that you really are passionate about and also make sure that it is a service that people feel like they really need. This has been so easy because people have said, ‘Oh my god, I have needed this.’ It’s great to have a boutique, but if you want to make steady cash flow you need to have something that people know they need and people know that you do it well.” While she loves going downtown for lunch at Ocmulgee Traders, going to IVP on Ingleside, or hanging in Mercer Village, she thinks it’s necessary that people reassess why they want to love Macon. “Not to take away from all of the activities that are going on but maybe sometimes we need to appreciate the places we have in a manner that doesn’t require big name bands and DJs.” Sometimes it’s just as important to enjoy the simple life in Macon as well as the big, exciting moments.
REPORT OF PROGRESS You cannot miss all the improvements appearing in Downtown Macon: new businesses occupy formerly vacant spaces, loft residents inhabit historic buildings, tree and vegetation shade and beautify sidewalks, storefronts receive revamps from existing business owners and downtown events reach record levels of attendance. Revitalizing our downtown improves the quality of life for all of Macon’s citizens. For almost two decades, NewTown Macon has enabled public and private partners to carry out the community’s vision for Downtown Macon’s revitalization. NewTown Macon reinvigorates downtown by focusing on increasing residents, growing jobs and creating a sense of place. We achieve results in these three areas by setting five-year campaign goals, which give us a benchmark to evaluate our progress.
INCREASING RESIDENTS NewTown is increasing downtown residents by funding loft development through our Loft Development Loan Fund. The Loft Development Loan Fund exists to provide public benefit through converting vacant space to active loft use, increasing property tax revenue, creating construction jobs and improving the aesthetics of Downtown Macon. Between 2012 and 2017, we have promised the community we would add 125 apartments and lease 85% of these within the first two years of the project’s completion. Two years into our campaign period, NewTown’s investments delivered 104 new apartments. As surprising as it is that we are 16% ahead of our five-year target after only two years, it is even more exciting that 97% of these units are occupied! Our biggest challenge is delivering new lofts fast enough to meet demand.

CREATING SENSE OF PLACE NewTown Macon wants our downtown to be an enjoyable place for the entire community. To create a sense of place, we protect endangered buildings, manage First Fridays, beautify streets, promote downtown events, and fund and develop the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail. The Ocmulgee Heritage Trail system is currently over eleven miles long! Now, the trail is expanding to include Amerson River Park and connect the existing Ocmulgee Heritage Trail to Ocmulgee National Monument at Walnut Creek.

GROWING JOBS The next step for our campaign cycle is to grow jobs in the downtown area by increasing commercial occupancy in storefronts. To meet this goal, we hope to invest in forming a new Business Recruitment Revolving Fund over the next few months. Read the complete Report of Progress in Macon Magazine and learn more about NewTown by joining us at the Tour of Progress on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 4-6pm. Free tours start at NewTown’s office, 479 Cherry Street. A reception at the Crazy Bull, 473 Second Street, follows the tours.

On the Map Back in the days of my youth, I was a fairly avid boxing fan. It was back in the day of Muhammad Ali’s meteoric rise in that profession and which I would term a golden age of the sport itself. Looking back on it all, I clearly remember Ali’s (then, Cassius Clay’s) gold medal victory in the 1960 summer Olympic games in Rome.

Water Liars at
The Hummingbird
THE REVIEW SEPTEMBER 18
Lineup: Water Liars / Rolybots Cost: Free, The Hummingbird While the crowd waits for the show to begin, the end of the short-lived smoking ban at The Hummingbird dominates the discussion. When Rolybots take the stage, however, everyone’s attention shifts to the band and the crowds growing anticipation shows as folks finish off beers and get fresh ones for the show. There is no doubt that people are at The Hummingbird to dance, drink and party with Rolybots. The band starts things off with a couple of their best if older songs. “Circles” and “Towns” are perfect examples of how the bands vintage jangle and classic rhythms can make your feet move and your body sway. Just when you settle in to a groove, the bottom falls out and without hesitation they get heavy enough to have you banging your head. Just two songs in and the growing crowd is starting to feel it. Out of the blue Justin Smith (vocalist/ guitarist) asks, “Are we too loud? They’re telling us to turn down.” The audience practically laughs at the impossibility of too loud for The Hummingbird. Obviously frustrated, but undaunted Rolybots dive into a brand new and hard rocking garage inspired song I would later find out is called “Shit”. An amazingly appropriate title, because about half way through the song, it hits the fan. The short version: the soundman pulls the plug because band is too loud, a few choice words are had between the soundman and the band, the band packs up, band talks with owner, owner and soundman not on the same 26 OCTOBER 1 - 15, 2014
page, apologies are made, future shows are promised. Poor communication cripples yet another event in our fair city. Sounds like everyone’s happy, right? Not by a long shot. Now there’s a whole crowd of grumbling show goers trying to decide whether to stick around for Water Liars or just call it a night. In the end, most just choose to leave all together. So much for a well-attended show. The waffling on smoking and now cutting short one of our most beloved local acts has many of the regulars feeling like they’re being at best ignored and at worse neglected. Either way the Hummingbird is going through a bit of an identity crisis and if they don’t want disgruntled clientele, they need to get it figured out sooner than later. All of this has put headliners Water Liars in a pinch. The local band that was supposed to get the crowd fired-up was cut off for being too loud and now Water Liars, coming from Mississippi, have to win over an obviously upset audience. The band dives right into their powerful and emotional set and immediately you understand why they had been paired with Rolybots. Water Liars sound relies heavily on a similar ebb and flow, moving from hushed ballads to rootsy rockers with ease. Other than a few high energy distortion heavy R&B themed songs, the three piece band plays a pretty standard, no frills version of alt-country. The harmonies the drummer adds are at times so perfect they verge on sticky sweet. In true southern literary fashion, the point of these songs is clearly to tell a story. Tales of lost love, fading love, leaving home, and loneliness are vividly told in the classic troubadour tone. Hopefully the next time Water Liars comes to town we can give them a proper drama free introduction to Macon.
