ast year, for the 11th Hour Thriller Parade over 2000 people converged on Cherry Street to watch. Over 100 people danced. Other than the 11th Hour, no media coverage was given to the event. No Ben Jones, dressed like a vampire on the eleven o’clock news, no photographers from the daily, nothing. I think I say that to say how proud we are of our readers.

We’ve been doing this a long time now, and that you are paying attention means everything. For us to be able to put together such a large event, on our own, and to have so many people call everyday and come to practice and come to witness the thing, just goes to show what we can all do when we put our heads together. Honestly, it’s with dread each year that we begin this thing. It’s not an easy event to plan, and without sponsors like Newtown Macon and the Community Foundation and good folks like our dance instructor Pilar Wilder it would never happen.

But on that first fall Thursday, when we’re blasting Micheal Jackson in

Tatnall Square Park for our first practice and I look across the dancers and see every age group, every race, just every kind of person there is, it makes me really proud what we’ve done here at our paper, despite the odds, here on issue #223.

That’s right, we’ve printed over two hundred issues in the last nine years!

I hope it’s because you can feel that we care about our community, about all of our readers and because of the great efforts we go to make our product worth it’s weight. I’ve seen a lot of copycat publications come and go, and they go because doing this isn’t easy. You can slap together some pages and take some photos, but being a publication like ours takes much, much more than that.

A friend of mine from Fitzgerald sent me a text this week. It said “If mankind collapses, it will be for sins of omission. Every man is guilty of the good he did not do.” We hope we can keep that attitude in our hearts, for our readers for a long time to come. Here is to getting things done.

I’ve been listening to Steve Reich, an American Composer of minimal music. His innovations came with using tape loops and simple audible process like humming or clapping to explore musical concepts. It sounds weird, I know but it is oddly comforting. Check him out if you haven’t heard him.

Also got a look at the two CD three DVD collections called The Bridge School Concerts. Neil Young and family have been lending their name to support The Bridge School, which helps kids with special needs, for 25 years. This retrospective of the talent that they have helped lure to the cause is pretty mind blowing, The Boss, Sonic Youth, The Who, Brian Wilson, REM, Tony Bennett and Metallica just to name a few.

The Walking Dead slowly walked back onto

AMC this week. The hour and a half premiere was awesome. The zombie apocolypse is in full effect, and the group of half wits we follow around are fleeing from Atlanta and trying to get to Ft. Benning. If you read the book, there are still surprises left for you on the show.

And Sunny In Philly’s episode about Shadynasty’s was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

I just bought The Destiny of the Republic; A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President, about the life of Civil War Hero and reluctant Pres to the US, James Garfield. Serving only 200 days in office, author Candice Millard contends

that it was botched attempts at Medicine that made Garfield someone we forget. I don’t know why I’ve been consuming so much history lately, but I’m actually looking forward to reading this.

Dickey Betts cancelling on Macon’s Fly South Fest really sucks, but stay tuned because while the November show at Waterworks won’t be happening, they are planning on doing something at the Cox Capitol Theatre that night, and something at the park later in the year. We’ll pass the details on as soon as we get them. As for why Dickey cancelled... no ones talking.

Proceeds from the day support the organization’s annual “JAM Goes Back to School” project, which sends professional musicians into Middle Georgia schools to perform and educate, as well as the Jazz Association of Macon Young Jazz Musician scholarship, which is awarded at this event.

t’s time for residents and visitors alike to welcome fall on shady Riverdale Drive in Macon, as the Jazz Association of Macon presents its eighth annual Jazz & Arts on Riverdale event Sat., Oct. 22, from Noon to 6pm.

An afternoon of free live Jazz will feature the classic sounds of many of the area’s finest musicians including: the Gordon Vernick Quartet, James Brown Trio, Keith Fitzgerald Trio, and EKC Quartet + One. An art market, featuring local and regional fine artists, will offer works to ooh and aah over before selecting just the right pieces to take home.

A kids’ corner with inflatables and an art area will entertain the little ones, and food and beverage vendors will be on site, adding to the park like atmosphere.

Lawn chairs are encouraged, and the neighbors of Riverdale Drive welcome the opportunity to share their shade with visitors to the event, which they present in partnership with the Jazz Association.

nce again, the 11th Hour is proud to announce the practice schedule and date for the 6th annual Downtown Zombie Parade. This is a free event where participants of all ages have the chance to learn Michael Jackson’s iconic Thriller Dance and parade down Cherry Street on Friday, October 28. This year, we are thrilled to be a part of downtown’s Friday Fest, where some Halloween fun will be taking place around town, from an open dance party at Cherry Street Plaza to special dinner and drink specials for zombies.

Last year, the Downtown Zombie Parade saw over 80 dancers perform at Cherry Street Plaza, where thousands crowded the block to watch the streets come alive with ghouls and zombies for Macon’s coolest Halloween event. We replicate the complete 14 minute Thriller video with the help of our instructor Pilar Wilder of Hayiya Dance Theatre and neighboring zombies of all ages.

A dance party is encouraged before and after the parade, where the intersection will be blocked off from 8-10p.m. Students of Hayiya Dance Theatre will entertain the crowd before Macon’s zombies take over the streets to “terrorize y’alls neighborhood” at 9p.m. sharp.

The long held Halloween experience Underworld Macon is taking a hiatus this year and that curdles the blood of local Halloween thrill seekers. But don’t be dismayed, there are several options available to satisfy your thirst for October entertainment.

Nightmare on Holt

As you pass through the doors of the American Red Cross Building on Holt Avenue (Macon), October 22- what waits for you beyond? Is it a bloody nightmare or a bloody good time?!?

Gray Station Better Hometown and FURever Friends Humane Society will be joining together for an adults-only Halloween party / fundraiser that will be full of tricks and lots of treats for all who attend! The evening, lasting from 7pm-11pm, will be replete with heavy hors d'oeuvres, cash bar, deadly dancing with a dj, on-site fortune teller reading tarot cards, costume contest, and a silent-as-the-grave auction with a little bit of everything for everybody! Boo-Hoo! Fort Hawkins

Fort Hawkins is a wonderful place and if you haven’t been (or haven’t in a while), you need to get over there. If you’re looking for an engraved invitation (minus the engraving), here you go: On October 31, from 5pm to 8pm, they’re opening up for FREE so you can enjoy their Halloween Hauntings evening. Featured in “The Ghosts of Macon,” Fort Hawkins has “long been considered one of middle Georgia’s haunted places.” See for yourself and enjoy some old fashioned fun with jack-o-lantern carving, candlelight tours of the blockhouse replica and a bonfire, among other things (like meeting the Middle Georgia Ghostbusters).

Halls of Havoc - Lizellaa

Halls of Havoc is located at 7536 Knoxville Rd, Lizella. All tickets are cash at the door. Regular Ticket $14. Children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The comments have been rolling in on this haunted school, and they all sound something like this one, “This haunted school was AWESOME!!!! Every year we search for a scary haunt to go to & so far this place is by far the best one we have been to yet. We have driven as far as Atlanta & paid expensive prices to be scared. Anyone who enjoys these type of events should definately go to the "Halls of Havoc". Take I-75 to Hartley Bridge Rd (Exit 155). Turn Left onto Hartley Bridge Rd and get in the right lane. Stay straight on Mt. Pleasant Church Rd for 5.8 miles. Go to the 3rd four way stop and we are on the left. Entrance is JUST before the 3rd four way.

Hell Gate - Rain Church

Oct. 21 – 23; 28 – 30, 8 – 10:30 p.m.

Don’t let the fact that a church is presenting this experience lull you into a false sense of security; this production offers a spine chilling reality rivaling anything you will find at any local haunt. The difference? While the scenes depicted at a Halloween haunt might shake you up for a minute, the scenes you find at Hell Gate might just haunt you enough to change your life.

“Drama is not new as far as evangelism goes,” said Pastor Paula Johns.

“When Amiee Semple McPherson drew hundreds of people into the Angelus Temple in Los Angeles with drama, Sister Aimee said she ‘would not hesitate to use the devil's tools to tear down the devil's house.’ She was referring to Hollywood values. A No-Brainer LARRY SCHLESINGER Macon City Council Ward 3, Post 1

ne look around Macon and Bibb County ought to convince all of us that the SPLOST (Special Local Option Sales Tax) needs to be passed.

Given our present economic circumstances (with apparently no strong recovery in sight), many of our critical communal needs just exceed our local governments’ ability to fund them.

I am proud to have played a role in the formulation of the list of the numerous projects that have been proposed, and in order to bring them to a countywide vote, this list had to be approved first by both local governing bodies. As you would expect, each elected representative had his/her own ideas and project priorities, and while the ongoing debate continues regarding the necessity and propriety of some on the list, there is much at stake for us all.

My own major SPLOST priority has long been, and continues to be, the replacement of our public safety communications system. Our present system is unreliable, at best; it is subject to failure at critical times, preventing our police, fire department, Sheriff’s deputies and the like from not only talking amongst themselves, but to each

other, as well. Their inability to reliably and effectively communicate puts all of them at risk, and ergo all of us, too, and the $8 million necessary to rectify this problem alone justifies your vote for the SPLOST. The $14 million earmarked for storm drainage improvement is also an absolute necessity for the welfare and safety of us all.

Much of our underground system is old and is literally falling apart. Not long ago, Macon’s Public Works Department dug up and repaired a section of First Street in front of the Medical Center that was dangerously weak and unstable. This is not an isolated incident, and passage of the SPLOST will provide the funding necessary to the address this situation that likewise affects us all.

The acquisition of encroachment properties in South Bibb County around Robins Air Force Base is of similar importance to us all. Robins has long been a close friend and an extremely powerful economic engine for our entire Middle Georgia region that we, as a community, just cannot afford to lose to base realignment and closing (BRAC).

Right now, the United States Department of Defense is requiring the purchase of all base encroachment properties, and together, we must see that these acquisitions are completed prior to the next BRAC process that is anticipated in 2015. The $6 million in SPLOST funding that will purchase these

little over a year ago, I wrote the article below telling everyone of the evils of Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the threat he poses to not only the Western World but especially to Israel. Nothing has changed except now the madman of Tehran is thought to be behind the thwarted terrorist attack planned on the Saudi Ambassador in the United States as well as the Israeli embassy located in Argentina. Add to that the fact that Iran has attempted to launch a Kavoshgar-5 missile carrying a monkey, which did fail by the way, and that an Iranian naval officer has been quoted as having said that Iran plans on putting naval vessels near the United States sea borders and you have a recipe for a disastrous outcome. But it can be avoided.

The United States, and in particular the Obama Administration, has rattled its' sabres at Iran in the past. But what good has it done?

In December, 2009 Iran successfully tested a Sejil-2 missile that has the range of knocking out Israeli bases as well as U.S. bases located in the Gulf. To that, then Obama Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who slightly resembles Alfred E.

Newman, but more so like Beaker on the Muppets, thundered that Iran was running out of time to comply with international demands that Iran halt her nuclear program. In stuttering Beaker fashion, Gibbs stammered on "if they don't (stop), time will run out" and Western powers will move to the "next step". After the Iranian connection was proved in the recent plots to assassinate the Saudi Ambassador on American soil, President Obama has promised to hold Iran “accountable” for its’ actions.

Apparently, the "next step" is pulling a Neville Chamberlain and continue drawing lines in the sand until they reach all the way to Tel Aviv. All the while, Iran keeps producing uranium in the name of "energy" for her citizens.

Ahmadinejad has been less transparent.

He's been quoted as saying, "Israel must be wiped off the map" and has said that the Holocaust is a myth. Further, he has thumbed his nose at the United States by calling us "war criminals" for our actions to end World War II by using nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Yeah, this is someone we should trust. And I forgot to mention that Russia has been helping this nut case bring nuclear capabilities to Iran by supplying the uranium fuel. Does that make you feel any better?

encroachments will be money very well spent and a very small price for all of us to pay in order to do what we can, while we can, to see that Robins AFB is remains absolutely essential to our nation’s military.

Years ago, Macon’s greater Bellevue community was promised a recreation center at the site of Durr’s Lake. An extensive master plan was devised and divided into development phases with projected costs.

As Chairman of the city’s Community Resources and Development Committee, I made the creation of this park a top priority, but lo and behold, the economy tanked and the funding necessary to make this neglected and depressed neighborhood’s dream come true failed to materialize. The $1.5 million that the SPLOST will provide for phase one of the plan will transform today’s sea of dirt there into a needed neighborhood resource and a source of community pride.

Our present Animal Control facility is a downright embarrassment. It is located at the mouth of the city’s landfill, and just finding it is akin to navigating through a maze.

The building, it seems, is infested with roaches that literally cover the defenseless animals at night, inhabit the open wounds of many. The building is not ‘sealed,’ so whenever the facility is bombed with insecticide, the roaches just crawl back into the hollow areas of the woodwork until the bombing has ceased. There is no question that Macon and Bibb County are in need of a whole new people- and adoption-friendly facility that is readily accessible, and the $3 million sum that the SPLOST will generate holds the promise of completely transforming the way

Now comes a report by London’s Sunday Times that Iran is paying members of the Taliban to kill U. S. troops in Afghanistan.

Apparently, at least five Iranian companies that have offices in Afghanistan are financing Taliban battlefield expenses and are even giving cash bonuses of $1000 per head for killing OUR troops as well as $6000 for destroying a military vehicle. Further, it appears that these companies have been set up for the sole purpose of channeling money to our enemy. Now wouldn’t it stand to reason that a country in which the state owns a great deal of its’ own industry would be the backers of these “companies”, especially since the president of that country has openly criticized everything about the United States even to the point of blaming us for the turmoil in the Middle East because of our presence there? In other times this in itself would be an act of war worthy of a nice round of Maverick missiles leveling Tehran. I have a great bridge I’d like to sell to anyone who thinks Ahmadinejad is not behind this is. Please let me know if I have any takers.

Eventually someone is going to have to do something about the little weasel known as the President of Iran, whether it is Israel or the United States, before it's too late. There is a precedent for a preliminary strike in dealing with the nuclear reactor situation unto itself. In 1980, IRAN bombed a nuclear reactor in Iraq, as the late President of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, showed the same arrogance of power that Ahmadinejad has showed. Then in 1981, Israel got tired of

Furthermore, another $8 million of the SPLOST is earmarked for the Second Street corridor project that proposes to link Mercer University Drive/Little Richard Penniman Boulevard with downtown Macon, finally linking east with west. The mayor and council have already establish enterprise and opportunity zones along this corridor that offer significant tax advantages to businesses and entrepreneurs that choose to locate there and participate in the economic redevelopment of downtown, and from which additional development will surely emanate.

Finally, the SPLOST as crafted will help to retire a significant amount of the debt of both the city and the county, saving the city $4 million a year in general fund obligation, and the county $3.2 million. These are very sizable sums can, in turn, be put to much better usage, enhancing the welfare and security of us all.

To me, a vote for the SPLOST is simply a no-brainer, but before you head to the polls to cast your vote, take a few moments to carefully consider for yourself the entire list of projects that the SPLOST, if passed, will fund. Each project on that list is of significant importance to some segment of our entire community, and there are a number of things that you, too, will find of absolutely critical importance.

I, then, urge you cast your vote with ‘the big picture’ in mind, since a vote cast against the few specific items that that you personally can live without adversely hinders, and even endangers, us all.

Hussein as well, and bombed another Iraqi reactor. I bet the Iranians won't sing the same tune if Israel nails one of their own reactors. The Iraq War was certainly an unpopular war but it served its’ purpose: the overthrow of a dictator who was a threat to world security while promoting a democratic replacement. We should do the same thing in Iran for the safety of not only Israel but ourselves and the rest of the world. We’ve all heard that the Weapons of Mass Destruction were never found when we invaded Iraq. I beg to differ. We eliminated the biggest WMD when our military found Saddam Hussein and an Iraqi court convicted and executed him.

Is this no less true for Ahmadinejad, who flaunts nuclear weapons by stating that Iran would not retreat “one iota” in its right to have a nuclear program? (By the way, it is 993 miles from Tehran to Tel-Aviv and keep in mind that it’s only a little over 6000 miles from Tehran to New York.) The United States should not put up with this thug. I can promise you that Israel won’t for much longer .

But will we with the current administration in the White House? I sincerely doubt it.

Q: Does Keep Macon-Bibb County Beautiful do anything?

A: Good question, one the city had this year when the budget came around and they clipped KMBBC’s annual budget, leaving only Bibb County to fund it. The fact is that the organization, which was the first Keep America Beautiful affiliate in the nation, has become better known for recycling Christmas trees than anything else. But that’s going to change with the work Karen Lambert has done, including the hiring of Laura Jackson as program director. She’s a thoughtful, organized bulldog with experience in the city’s Public Works Department. Judging from her enthusiasm, she’s ready to restore their reputation for… well, keeping Macon and Bibb County clean. This past Saturday, they partnered with Shermonte Thomas and MCEO to get busy in East Macon.

WHAT I LEARNED… Picking up trash in Fort Hill In a nutshell: I was on the TrinityMagnolia crew under Y-O Latimore’s leadership on the edge of Fort Hill, sandwiched between Sulphur Springs and the Ocmulgee River. Laura Jackson met us

with garbage grabbers, trash bags, gloves and a sign-in sheet. We patrolled the rightof-way, occasionally wandering into the yards of boarded-up houses which were plentiful. We ended with more than a dozen volunteers, spending two hours walking the two streets. Putting my truck to good use, I rode around with Laura afterwards picking up the trash bags from our crew and the Rosa Jackson crew.

LESSON #1: There’s more trash than you think. A gum wrapper here, a cigarette butt there, empty bag of potato chips and a bottle… it adds up quickly. I filled three 30-gallon bags and if you missed it earlier, there were a dozen of us. Between the two crews, there were more than 30 bags in the back of my truck, a mound obscuring my rear view mirror. We only scratched the surface.

LESSON #2: We’ve criminalized community clean-up.

People are so accustomed to seeing prisoners in orange vests completing their community service on the side of the road picking up litter that they can’t conceive of anyone else doing it. Numerous times,

both crews heard the young and old ask, “What are you in for?” While using prison labor helps get the job done, it takes the responsibility off the rest of us, and I think, makes us messier because someone else will pick it up… paying back their debt to society.

LESSON #3: Pride starts at home.

I’ll spare you another rumination on Malcolm Gladwell’s Broken Window stuff, but I will say that pride matters for a community.

Though it may not be the silver bullet for all of Macon’s problems, you can definitely see where more community pride would help resolve a lot of our problems. KMBBC and the Cherry Blossom Festival were actually started as ways to celebrate community pride. At the very least, getting down in the trenches shows that people here really do care.

LESSON #4: The type of trash changes depending on your proximity to a major road. The closer we were to Jeffersonville Road, the more frequently we picked up the empty plastic bottles that once held sports drinks and soda—kid’s stuff. The deeper into the neighborhood, the more those bottles were glass and once full of cheap booze—adult vice. Near the elbow at Magnolia, on the turn to Trinity, Y-O found a crack pipe.

LESSON #5: I’m more than a little OCD. If you’ve ever lived or worked with me, you know how messy I am so it might be a surprise to hear that I’m a meticulous cleaner… when I get into it. The whole crew would be up the road 50 yards and I’m still combing through uncut grass to find that halfburied ice-pop wrapper or hidden beer bottle.

LESSON #6: Floco Torres looks good in an orange reflective safety vest.

On his birthday, after precelebrating his birthday the night before, Floco and his lovely lady Charlene joined us for the community clean-up. Initially, he refused the safety vest, but the curse of a thousand jokes made at the expense of crossing guards came back to haunt him.

To my surprise, he wasn’t wearing it later that night at Floctoberfest.

I

can feel it in the morning mist. I can hear it in the punchdrunk, sugar-crazed cackles of my children (I’ve heard, “Give me some caaandy, Laaady,” more than once around the house). I can see it in the Target ads. It’s Halloween.

Halloween is my third favorite holiday (what can compete with the generous and nostalgic Christmastide and Thanksgiving’s button-popping family sweetness?). But Halloween is definitely up there, especially since it combines all the best of fall with the fun of dress up (and free candy). So how do we celebrate Halloween? A few time-honored traditions as common as they are special to us: A trip to the pumpkin patch. PATCH. Not a parking lot with a lot of warty-looking pumpkins and a fake scarecrow. The boys and I head to Elliott Farms every year (my youngest believes it was named after him and I don’t disabuse him of it) to choose a pumpkin, pick it ourselves, and haul it home to carve. Elliott Farms is a magical little place tucked off Holley Road in Lizella. It sees a lot of us in the spring/ summer (strawberries! blackberries!) and then again in the fall for pumpkins. It’s locally owned and run and also features the usual assortment of farm animals (including Scooter, the head-butting goat).

So pumpkins that grow in a real patch of earth are not your big-box, perfectly-symmetrical pumpkins. The color shading may vary, as do the shapes. But there is NOTHING city folk need more than to walk through a tangle of vines and pumpkins at this time of year. Although we haven’t been yet, the boys also look forward to the corn maze (a word of caution: keep children within earshot—they don’t call it a maze for nothing).

In Georgia, you can’t carve a pumpkin too far before Halloween because the condensation and humidity will rot it out within a week (at least at my house). So within the week

before Halloween, we fetch our pumpkin, carve out the seeds (saving them to roast),and do our best to sketch out a Superhero, wizard, or Star Wars character. We make apple cider or hot cocoa, build a fire in the fire pit, and thrill at the (slight) chill in the air. It’s mysterious.

Exciting. Toasty. Sweet. The best sorts of childhood memories—especially if friends and neighbors can join in.

For Halloween, we always go trick or treating in our little neighborhood, Huguenin Heights, on the actual evening.

The kids within a 3 (or so) block radius all cluster together—the Huguenin Hooligans—and rush from house to house as Transformers, Boba Fetts, Vaders, baseball players, and princesses, and it is a beautiful sight. We don’t get in the car, and we probably don’t visit more than thirty houses (believe me, that generates candy). Parents try for a nice balance between hovering to protect the little ones from car traffic and letting the kids revel in the excitement. Walking with them, I can’t really imagine a different tradition. Though I know other families may venture into madness of throngs of children and participating houses, a smaller-scale suits us just fine. This is why strong neighborhoods are so lovely—and so important: so we can take our kids around in festive dress without being mugged or getting into a vehicle. This is why sidewalks are important—and another reason why it’s so especially nice to know the folks around the corner. I may still have to siphon off the candy supply for weeks, but Halloween in our neighborhood, filled as it is with children, pets, costumes, giggling, excitement, and friendship, is sweet indeed.

New Orleans’ newest supergroup, The New Orleans Suspects, featuring members of legendary veteran touring acts The Radiators, The Neville Bros., and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, will make their Macon debut. The band, formed in the wake of the June breakup of The Radiators after 34 years, is comprised of some of the best, most higly respected players in New Orleans, including: Reggie Scanlan on bass (Radiators, Professor Longhair Band); Mean Willie Green on drums (Neville Bros. current drummer since 1981); Kevin Harris on saxophone (founder of The Dirty Dozen Brass Band); Jake Eckert on guitar/vocals (current member of The Dirty Dozen Brass Band); and C. R. Gruver on keyboards. The band combines original songs in the New Orleans style with hits and obscurities from the Allen Toussaint and Dr. John songbooks. Performance 9 p.m. no opening act, 2 sets. In August of 2008 frontman and multi-instrumentalist Noah Adams drifted into New Orleans and quickly found himself enchanted with its wild and authentic, booming musical styles. Chuck Courtenay @ Wild Wing Chuck Courtenay was born in Savannah, Georgia. THE SHORT OF IT...

Anthony B. Harris-- downtown denizen, writer, director, actor A

nthony B. Harris has been involved in local theatre, working behind the scenes as well as acting on stage, since 1983 and has been interested in film ever since he was a young boy. His growing love for movies prompted him to make his first, very low budget, movie in the late 90's.

He also acts on film and can be seen in The Fighting Temptations, Road Trip 2: Beer Pong, The Blind Side, and The Crazies. Most recently he worked on two of the three finalists in The Macon Shorts contest. Those two being Final Acts and The Razzle. He just sent the 11th Hour two companion pieces he’s directed, and we were impressed. Cuffed is a story about a man is handcuffed to a car while driving and being chased by two other cars. Is he the good guy or the bad guy? It asks the question 'Are we all cuffed to our past?' The other, Vicious Cycle is the story of a young man, his bicycle, and the violence that surrounds him. We asked him a few questions about the film and about his life Downtown. You know you've wondered who he is. We got more than we deserved. Learn a little more about Anthony’s short films and downtown views below.

Tell me about the experience that led to the idea for Cuffed and Vicious Cycles?

Cuffed stemmed from an amalgamation of ideas. I wanted to address a chapter of my life which had been weighing on my mind for awhile. I had been in a relationship with a girl that had been raped prior to me knowing her and it was obvious that she, naturally, had a hard time dealing with it. After 8 years together, we broke up but remained friends. About a year after that, she was raped again. When I found out , it angered and upset me. Regardless of who it happens to it has got to be a horrendous chapter in someone's life. And because it happened again, she was absolutely shattered. It made me feel helpless in that I was not around to " right this wrong ". I was not in her life the first time it happened and shortly after we went our seperate ways it happens to her again. It also has to do with one being " cuffed " to their past. Again, this is autobiographical and although I took it to extremes I wanted to make the point that, as a whole, society holds grudges and is not very forgiving. We are judged by our beliefs, by what we say, and, in some cases, how we behaved in our past. Qualified people don't get jobs because of things they have said or done.

Good people get shunned by society strictly on the basis of their religious, personal, or political beliefs. Especially in this day and age of technology and politcal correctness. There is alot of fast communication and opinions are a dime a dozen.

Should we be punished because we are anti-social, at one time shoplifted a candy bar, or have radical opinions? Should that be a reason to hold one back from their true potential? Cuffed and Vicious Cycle are companion pieces and the character of Gregory is the only one that appears in both Obviously, race plays a big part. Do you feel like there is a difference in race relations in a city like Macon versus a small country town like the ones depicted in your films?

When I originally wrote Vicious Cycle, Uriah ( our hero ) was a white boy. He was a mute that could not hear or speak. I changed him to a black boy for a few reasons and I kept him speechless but gave him the power of hearing. I wanted him to be able to hear the excruciating sounds of the rape as well as the sound of voices. Since I had set the story in the rural South, I wanted the villains to be a vile bunch of rednecks. It is not my intent to be cliche ( keep in mind, Uriah was originally white ) and remember Uriah is the product of a rape - his natural father was black. Do I think racism exists? Of course I do.

Do I think it is more prevalent in rural areas compared to the city? No. I think it is more in the open in some rural areas and in disguise in the bigger cities. City racists keep it to themselves and within their circle of friends. Have race relations improved? Yes, I believe so. That is obvious in politics, music, movies, television, books, sports, and on the streets.

Harris recently worked on two of the three finalists in the Macon Shorts contest that filmed here in Macon, and just finished two Shorts of his own.

You told me the rednecks were real. Tell me about where you found them?

Yes, the " rednecks " were good. They stole the show. I held auditions at Killian's Coffeeshop during the 2010 MaGa Film Festival weekend and had a great turnout. Chris Payne ( who I have known for about 14 years - he is the one on top of the girl in the rape scene ) and Jerry Ketch are locals from south Macon that heard I was holding auditions for 6 ( 3 shorts, 3 feature length ) different movies. They showed up interested in CANIS LUPUS REDNEXUS which is a politically incorrect comedy ( it makes fun of all types and alot of nationalities ) about a southern town inhabited by werewolves. Immediately, I read them for Vicious Cycle and they were it ( rednecks not racists ). McLean Smith is an actor from Savannah (SCAD graduate ) that also showed up at Killian's and had a great audition. He spouted off a Shakespeare monologue, as well as another memorized piece, and was full of improv energy. I was very happy with all three of them. Better than I expected Who does the camera work for you?

William Grammer ( he appeared on The 11th Hour cover along with 25 or so other people at Tattnall Square Park announcing The Movers and Shakers of the Next Five Years) did about 90% of the camera work. Mitchell Brinkley did the rest. William Grammer also did some of the camera work on Vicious Cycle. As did Mitchell Brinkley, Catt Gunter ( a small bit ), and myself ( I did the majority of it ).

We met a long time ago when you were doing Scene Stealers (which was awesome). Is film a medium you've always been interested in?

Ever since I was a small boy, I loved movies. I can thank my Dad for that. The first movie that I ever saw at a movie theatre was BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES ( the 5th installment in the original series ). My Dad was a Cinephile and would take us , or allow us to go, to movies all the time. I remember seeing rated R movies ( alot with my sister who was - at a whopping 18 years - old enough to be my consenting guardian ) such as SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER, THE SENTINEL, and CARRIE at the Mohawk Theatre on the Army base in Bamberg, Germany in the mid-late 1970's.

Being a small boy, movies allowed me to enter wonderful worlds beyond ours as well as show me what to expect when I reached adult hood ( or so I thought at the time ). They kept me up at night and fueled my dreams of being a superhero, a

warrior, and an alien creature. I wanted to be up there on that silver screen. As I got older, the desire to play dress up and make believe was and is still there. Of late, I realized that I want to tell stories that entertain, induce good and bad reactions, as well as touch on personal experience and emotions. In order for that to happen I had to start writing, directing, and producing my own films.

What's next for you? As I hinted at earlier, I have four more completed scripts that I want to eventually film as well as a couple of other ones that are works in progress. I plan to film another short film in a couple of months called POSE ( which is also autobiographical ) and after that is completed move into pre-production on CANIS LUPUS REDNEXUS and GOOD GOLLY, MISS MULLY! which is a mockumentary about the elusive Ocmulgee River creature named ' Mully '. I take liberties with Macon’s history ( with a mixture of historic fact ). All for the sake of comedy. I expect it to be the talk of the town once filming begins. After all, it has a cast of characters that we are all familiar with.

You've become a downtown fixture over the last couple of years, and are probably one of the few families raising kids right on Cherry Street. Tell us the good and the bad about that. We have enjoyed living in downtown Macon immensely.

I always thought that it was the best part of Macon and still do.

That is why I am so critical of it. Alot of what people consider negative , I love. The sounds of the streets and the noise coming from the venues remind me that there is a vibrant life in this pocket of the city. Being a heavy sleeper allows me to sleep right through if need be. The homeless and the street people, with very few exceptions, have been nothing but kind to us.

Most of them are cordial and love the children, and I think that it is great that it gives our kids another form of education that only life can give. It teaches them that there are all types and that those with less and the less fortunate are not necessarily lesser human beings. Is there room for improvement? Sure.

Alot of downtown businesses and denizens have to be willing to take criticism and to hear differing opinions. It is healthy and it encourages one to improve. Holiday decorations that are missing light bulbs and falling apart cheapen Downtown.

Parking tickets are ridiculous. I think that Downtown business owners and residents should be allowed to park without being penalized. As a family who supports and lives Downtown, there are ways that we can be more proactive.

Dylan York explores the nightlife, character & grit of downtown "Hate or you participate" - Gucci Mane. hese past few weeks have been pretty cool. One of the biggest highlights was the screening of Black Dynamite at the Cox Capitol Theater. This event, of course, was sponsored by Jubee & the Morning After, as well as Anaconda Malt Liquor. This movie incorporates several aspects of Americana that I enjoy: Retromodernism, Grindhouse Cinema, 16mm film, kitschy 70s blaxploitation jazz-funk, the phrase "jive turkey" and c-list pornstar Charlotte Stokely. Within these are several other elements that make the film worthwhile, like Kung-Fu and racial slurs towards white people. The film tells the story of Black Dynamite, a smooth pimp who's just found out his brother has been killed. This leads Dynamite to strike a fist of vengeance down on everyone involved with his brother's death; a trail that leads him to the highest powers that be.

Kitschy retro-modern exploitation cinema is a favorite genre of mine. When I first moved here "Pulp Fiction" was being played at the Capitol and I was like, "Hell yeah."

Then I found out it doesn't happen all that often and I was like, "Dammit." I wish that the Capitol would play a cult film at least once a week. I've been saying this for like six months now to no avail. I'll even do the PR if it means I get to see Bladerunner on a big screen. There's so much good cinema out there and enough pseudo-intellectuals at Mercer to fill up the Capitol if we had a steady Goddard-Hitchcock-Tarantino-Lynch rotation going. Karmically I feel a duty to say this, even movies that are being hyped by blogs aren't living up to their animated-gifmeme standards anymore. I was pretty disappointed by Drive. All the right elements are in play; that guy from the movie Stay, good soundtrack, Christina Hendricks, heists, stereotypical Italians. The movie hit me strongly at first, it started off with the unnamed driver escaping LAPD to a banger from French House DJ Kavinsky. That had me hooked. Sadly, much like my love life, it was all downhill after the first five minutes.

Hype, when it's in the wrong place, can be doubly disappointing. Take off the underground electro and selvedge skinny jeans veneer of Drive and you're left with a skinny hipster playing the role that Vin Diesel would have six years ago. Repackaging something for the Y-Generation has made finding something genuinely good a bit tricky. Does that girl sitting outside of the cafe in a romper and wayfarers listen to Wolf Parade or does she just shop at Target? Remember ten years ago when MTV was cramming boy bands down your throughout and telling you it was punk rock? I'm not going to break this down to an existentialist discourse on commercialism, mostly because Brad only lets me have 700 to 800 words each week. But, take it from someone who wears a "hipster uniform" and has Coltrane's entire Village Vanguard series on his iPod; emptiness in the form of depth is everywhere these days.

One movie I saw this week that is one of my new favorites is Midnight in Paris. The portrayal of Hemingway was deep and on point, and Adrien Brody as Salvador Dali made me smile from ear to ear. There's my

film reviews for the month. Maybe this thing can Gremlins its way into its own column, "Dyl on Films." Probably not, I can already hear people saying to themselves, "No one cares what you thought of Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2, Dylan."

Also this week there was a really cool show at The Rookery. Actually it's a pretty safe bet that every week there is a pretty cool show at The Rookery. I write about this a lot.

I don't feel like it's getting repetitive, though.

nights when the bands are sound checking.

This particular night the band was hot and in spite of my never having heard them I was immediately entranced. The band was Dirty Bourbon River Show. Their praises had been sung to me by Megan Jean on more than one occasion, so I wandered over to The Rook to talk to them during their load in. No fauxhemian airs here, kids, these guys are the real deal. Hailing from New Orleans and sporting a tuba/bass player with dreadlocks, Dirty Bourbon River Show are a sight to behold.

Their whisky-fueled (actually their pianist was drinking Harp Lager) NOLA Bounce will have anyone jiving along. Audience participation is brought on the good old fashioned way of yelling partially indiscernible scats into the air immediately sparking a SouthernBaptist-turned-jezebel-esque callback. If this review doesn't confuse you and makes you sad inside for missing the show, they'll be back the 28th with Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band. Bring your dancing shoes and a crucifix, it's going to get hot!

was in Pensacola covering Deluna Festival this past weekend for TheBlueIndian.com and it was one of the best work-vacations I've ever had. I watched Cake, Ghostland Observatory, Ra Ra Riot and tons of other bands playing literally a few feet from the beach. Job well done Pensacola. However, I was a bit surprised when I got back to Macon to find half of my family that lives here had been completely swept up in the "Occupy" movement. If you don't know what I'm talking about, educate yourself right now. What started as a small crowd protesting on Wall Street has grown to a worldwide organized movement to draw awareness to the issues with America's spending habits and corporate influence in politics. My surprise wasn't from their interest in the movement, but at the fact that my dear sixty-one year old mother took the streets of Downtown with a sign in hand, along with about twenty-five other people. Whether you're a Republican, Democrat, Whig or Pastafarian (look it up), you should be aware of what's going on with your country's money. Occupy Macon is meeting at 3rd Street Park on Saturday the 19th to spread the good news starting around 12:00pm. If you don't feel like doing that, try to make it to the Rotary Park on Riverside to meet up with Macon Water Authority and help them clean up our wonderful city.

There's honestly too much going on on Saturday to make it to everything but I do know that the annual benefit for The Grand Opera House featuring the stars of "Jersey Boys" is sure to be a great time, and Modern Skirts are making their way back to the Hummingbird.

All good things. I'm going to be spending my Saturday in Milledgeville though for the 8th annual Deep Roots Festival. Deep Roots has seen the likes of Grace Potter, Delta Spirit, Trampled by Turtles and this year will feature Georgia's own Reptar and The Whigs. Every year I've been has been an amazing time so I'd suggest checking it out. Oh and of course the ever-popular Arts on Riverdale is going on. You're going to be worn out on Sunday.

I figure that the best way to wind down a raucous weekend has to be listening to some classical music and it's just my luck that the Macon/Mercer Youth Symphony String Orchestra has a free performance on Monday the 24th at Fickling Hall. I know they've been hard at work this year and there's no reason why you shouldn't check out their talents. The following night, the Cox Capitol Theatre is screening the insanely hilarious comedy Black Dynamite, which will be followed by the live broadcast of Jubee & the Morning After's performance for Jimmy Kimmel. Again, a free event for your entertainment. There's plenty of live music to round out the next two weeks if you've got the energy.

Sterling Waite and The Cotton Avenue Hustlers bring their oldtime string sound to the Hummingbird for a free show on October 27th. Last time I saw these guys (I didn't actually make it inside)they had the Rookery full to the brim. Megan Jean & The KFB and The Dirty Bourbon River Show return to The Rookery on October 28th and I'm especially excited about The Rocketboys coming back to Macon on November 2nd. They'll be playing a free show at The Hummingbird to follow up their second consecutive Bragg Jam performance, along with their tourmates The Winter Sounds.

Who says you need money to have fun, huh? That's five free events going on in the next two weeks I've told you about and I'm sure there are many more. If you ride your bike, you could practically spend nothing at all!

I've been spending a good bit of time on the Georgia State Parks website planning weekend trips for the next month. I had no idea there are so many place to camp around the state and at least ten of them are within an hours drive.

I might have stressed this in every single column I've written for The 11th Hour, but the best way to meet people, discover new places and make your time in Macon more enjoyable is to simply get out and go! Don't be shy about visiting local businesses or driving around town. There are plenty of wonderful things just waiting for you, you're just going to have to find them. I'll help where I can.
