hen almost 2000 people gathered at the corners of Third and Cherry Street last year for the Zombie Parade, we were as surprised as anyone.

The event started less than five years ago with a few dozen dancers and a few hundred half-surprised onlookers. Marcus Nash would upload a video of that dance, and since then over 50,000 people from all over the country have watched our city get their groove on to Micheal Jackson.

To accommodate the growing crowds, we’re moving the dance this year to Cherry Street Plaza. It’s in front of the Children’s Museum, before you get to the fountain that never works.

There will be plenty of room for everyone to see, and our wonderful dance instructor Pilar Wilder has put together

a whole bunch of entertainment. While the Zombie Parade won’t begin until 9 o’clock sharp, dancers will be recreating some of Micheal’s hits starting as early as 7p.m. DJ Dirt Dogg will be spinning and his after party at the Sochi Gallery will be the one you probably don’t want to miss. And a big thanks to The College Hill Corridor, our sponsor this year, without whom none of this would happen. We’ve outgrown the days of just getting out there and dancing, and with bigger crowds comes bigger expenses, thanks to CHCC for being an origanization helping to create social change in Macon. It can’t happen without Community Involvment and on Saturday the 30th you’ll see about as much of that as you can handle. Make sure you are a part of it.

October 21, 22, 23 & 28, 29, 30 An entertaining, one-hour guided tour at twilight featuring costumed actors at graveside who bring to life stories (a few old favorites, many as yet untold) of selected individuals buried in Historic Riverside Cemetery. Spirits include a civil war soldier, teachers, nuns, a young schoolgirl, and the highlight, a scandalous man by the name of Burge. Tours end with a reception at the historic 1918 marble mausoleum. Light refreshments served. Some vehicular transport is available along tour route. $20 adults, $10 students. Reservations recommended.

I think Deep Roots Fest in Milledgville has it going on. Booking Grace Potter and the Nocturnals last year, right before she got huge was brilliant. This year’s headliner won’t disappoint either with Delta Spirit, another great band you can bet to be hearing more from on the Festival Circuit. Not to mention it’s in the fall, which is my kind of weather.

This October will mark the 11th Hour’s fourth annual Thriller Parade. Last year saw the largest attendance yet, with over 130 zombies dancing in the “Parade”, and nearly one thousand more spectators enjoying the ghostly spectacle along Cherry Street. This year, you too, can participate in one of Macon’s coolest events of the year!

From the outside, the DeLee family looks like any other: Mom works at Wachovia, Dad has worked for 17 years at Metro Power and the three kids attend Macon State College. But every fall, this ordinary family takes part in a not-so-ordinary activity: scaring the pants off Middle Georgia!

That’s right, Macon has its own Adams Family and while the fruits of their passion may only be savored for 13 days a year, this labor of love is more like a business than a hobby. “A lot of planning goes into this,” said husband and wife team Troy and Serena DeLee, co-owners of Underworld Macon.

What began as a small fundraiser for the Children’s Museum has mushroomed into a fullThe DeLee’s fledged event requiring year-long efforts and now benefits the Capitol Theatre. The author of stoner soundtracks all over the USA, Afroman eventually has been writing music for decades. Having gained the attention of Universal Records, who signed him to a six-album deal. The Good Times, was a compilation of his first two LPs and a few new ones.

"Because I Got High" was also included on the soundtrack to Kevin Smith's film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. "Because I Got High" became a huge hit around the world in the last quarter of 2001. When he returned in 2004, he did so in a big way, with the double-disc Afroholic...the Even Better Times, albeit he did so independently. He now relives the hype that once surrounded him by touring college towns performing his favorite hits and promoting new tracks.

Looking somewhat like Dracula's nasty little brother who spent some hard years drinking and working as a carnival barker for a secondrate freak show, Unknown Hinson translates that vibe to his style of country and western-tinged psychobilly. Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, this rednecked crooner gained regional popularity with a selfproduced television show in 1992 and soon was touring nationwide, wowing audiences with his outrageous and campy, white-trash persona and freewheeling, sleazy tone. Raucous, theatrical and over-the-top, Unknown Hinson isn’t just for the trailer park set anymore!

Initially a Pennsylvania based cover band, things began to change for the Poptart Monkeys when the band found Tyson Clark (lead vocals/sometime drummer) in 2003. The band traveled to Atlanta to write and record a new album (Happily Never After, 2006) at the legendary Tree Studios. The initial recording sessions were loose and spontaneous, capturing the band's live energy. The band collaborated on 13 new songs with Hugo Ferreira (Tantric).

Pink is not for sissies

1500 registrants prepare for the October 23 Central Georgia Race for the Cure

F

or years, the color pink has elicited thoughts of spring festivals and cherry blossoms in Middle Georgia. But, thanks to a dedicated group of Maconites, now pink also evokes visions of a warrior--a courageous woman who, despite her fear, fights a voracious foe, Breast Cancer.

And while she is fighting a personal battle for her life, her supporters are ensuring that this won’t happen to her daughters--they are racing for the cure at the Komen Central Georgia Race for the Cure.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation is the world’s largest network of breast cancer survivors and activists. The Central Georgia Affiliate, covering Baldwin, Bibb, Crawford, Houston, Jones, Monroe, Peach and Twiggs counties, has been battling breast cancer since 1999. By providing education and support, particularly in underserved population, the foundation helps women to overcome their fears.

“It is important to have a yearly mammogram,” Race Chair Mechel McKinley said. “Some young women have witnessed their mothers, grandmothers, and aunts succumb to breast cancer and are fearful. We help them to overcome their fears by showing them that there are things we can do now that we couldn’t do for grandmother. Early detection is key.”

Formed in 1999, the first Komen Central Georgia Race for the Cure was held in October 2000. In just a few short years, the Central Georgia Affiliate has grown from a small group of women, who knew more needed to be done to help address the breast health needs of central Georgia, to a network of survivors and activists on a mission and with a vision to end breast cancer forever.

We are always looking to educate young women,” said McKinley. “As early as high school, women should understand the importance of a monthly self exam. They should become familiar with their breasts to detect changes that may arise later in life.”

The activities behind the scenes of the Race for the Cure rivals those of any fortune five hundred company: recruiting volunteers and sponsors, publicity, securing a location, fundraising, dispersing grants from fundraising.

Planning for this major event takes the efforts of over 400 volunteers and 2 paid staffers in addition to committee and board members. As soon as the 2010 race is over, preparations for the 2011 race will begin. After reviewing the year’s events, a new battle plan is drawn up and a goal is approved by the board of directors (5 of them are breast cancer survivors).

This year, the Race includes a pre-race concert featuring singer/songwriter Candy Coburn who will sing “Pink Warrior”, a song written in memory of her grandmother, Tucker. Race for the Cure is the beneficiary of proceeds from the sale of this song. The concert will take place on October 22, at the Porter Auditorium at Wesleyan College, tickets are $5 online or at the door.

Race festivities begin at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23; participants can register online, by mail, in person and the day of the race.

Roy Barnes, Tyrone Brooks, Floyd Griffin and Malachi York

hen I started writing the first part of this column almost a month ago I knew very little about the inner workings of the Malachi York arrest several years ago in Putnam County. Of course I remembered the pyramids in Eatonton on Shady Dale Rd., York’s sensational trial and subsequent conviction. I assumed what most people who looked at this on the surface assumed: law enforcement got the bad guy and our legal system convicted him, all working in perfect harmony. It’s a safe assumption as no law enforcement officers were hurt, the suspect was arrested without incident and put in jail unharmed and the rest of the cult dissipated. What I did not know was the role, or lack of a role as turned out to be the case, that former Governor Roy Barnes played in the saga.

As you read in my last column, thenGovernor Barnes stood by and did absolutely nothing to help in the arrest of York by Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills, though Sills on repeated occasions asked for Barnes’ help. Sills would at one point even send Barnes a copy of GA Law 45-12-30 which explains the powers the Governor has to prevent violence and maintain order. Barnes apparently chose to ignore it.

Though I had read the accounts of the interactions between Sills and Barnes & company in Bill Osinski’s book “Ungodly”, I wanted to hear it for myself, so I contacted Sheriff Sills. After a couple of weeks of email and phone tag, we got together a few days ago for a fantastic discussion.

First and foremost, I wanted to know if Sheriff Sills had read “Ungodly” which in fact he had. I then asked him if it was factual to the best of his knowledge. He told me that “although it’s been several years since I read it, I don’t recall anything in it that wasn’t 100% true.” Since I had used “Ungodly” as the basis for my articles, that was great to hear! I then asked him what he meant by a comment he made in a 2003 Macon Telegraph article in which he called Roy Barnes a “political whore”. Sills responded very candidly when he said, “I was very supportive of Roy when he was a State Senator. He was the ideal legislator. But he was a much better legislator than a Governor. That (expletive deleted) was more interested in maintaining the support from his base of voters that he was in protecting the public safety of the people of Georgia. People forget that before anything else, the Governor is the chief law enforcement officer of the state.

Barnes forgot that too; seems like after his election he didn’t give a damn about a Sheriff from a little county like ours.”

Sills went on to tell me that he had written a letter to Governor Barnes March 9, 1999 in which he asked for a personal meeting with him to discuss the situation in Eatonton. In the letter, which I have read, Sills reports to Barnes that he has written a letter to then Director of the FBI Louis Freeh on May 4,1998, then tells Barnes that the Nuwaubians have “repeatedly attacked and slandered my office and me personally for the last eleven months.” He enclosed a copy of the letter to Freeh, along with proof of the slanderous writings of the Nuwaubians. I also have obtained a copy of the letter to Freeh.

Sills not only states his concern about the activities of the Nuwaubians, but also states that he is aware of the “extensive criminal activity by members of this group when it was headquartered in Brooklyn.

These activities included bank robbery, murder, arson and extortion.” Sheriff Sills’ source for this information was an FBI intelligence report. Sills then went on to tell Freeh that he was “frequently called by the parents of people that are moving here from all over the nation. The parents are extremely concerned about the safety of their children.” At the end of the Freeh letter, Sills begs, “I implore you to direct the full resources of the bureau in investigating this group as I feel their activities not only represent a threat to our community, but represent a threat to the nation itself.”

(It has to be remembered that this letter was written while the memory of Waco and Ruby Ridge was still very fresh in the minds of everyone.) Sills told me that “at least the FBI answered my letter.

They never really got on the train, but they did answer. Barnes didn’t.”

The next letter Sheriff Sills wrote to Barnes is dated June 20, 1999. He again tells Barnes of his concerns York, the Tama-Re compound and how York has violated or ignored county zoning ordinances. What interests me about this letter is the mention of former State Senator Floyd Griffin. (Griffin is also the former mayor of Milledgeville and is currently running against incumbent Johnny Grant for his old seat back.)

Sills sent Barnes a copy of a Nuwaubian newspaper in which there were pictures of Griffin at a Nuwaubian event held on Tama-Re. One picture had Griffin standing directly next to York.

Sills then went on to tell Barnes that Griffin attempted to “intervene in support of York and his group early on during the county’s problems,” while Griffin was still a State Senator, and that he went to Griffin and told him that “I didn’t think he was fully cognizant of York’s background and offered to share with him the law

enforcement intelligence we had gathered. Mr. Griffin’s response to me, and I quote, was ‘I don’t want or care what intelligence you have.’

Although I was never impressed with Griffin during his tenure in the senate, I was completely shocked that he was openly supporting an individual who was not only a convicted felon, but was conspicuously subversive and advocating sedition.” Further in the letter it is revealed that Barnes is “seriously considering” Griffin for the job as Adjutant General for Georgia. Sills then writes to Barnes “to think that Floyd Griffin could be in direct command of all the military forces of our state is at the least frightening.”

But what is even more frightening is that Governor Barnes was even considering this clown for that job. (As you can tell, I added him to our list in the title…) Evidently someone had

t press time for this issue, the big story in Macon was the 13 people who have been shot since Sept. 20, four of them fatally.

Macon has a crime problem. I am confident that this outbreak of violence will end quickly, but when it is over, a simple, fundamental fact will remain, and we should be candid about it: Macon has a crime problem.

Since I took office in 2007, I have repeatedly heard Police Chief Mike Burns say that crime is down in Macon over the previous. He is not wrong, but placed in context it is not that impressive a statistic. You wouldn’t know it from watching Nancy Grace, but according to FBI crime statistics, since violent crimes and serious property crimes peaked in 1991, rates have dropped nationally every year but one.

good sense somewhere down the road as Adjutant General isn’t listed on Griffin’s website as one of his positions. I hope the people of the 25th District in Georgia will have the same good sense and keep him unemployed.

etting back to Barnes, I asked Sheriff Sills if he thought that Ed Coughenour’s story was true (Please refer to Part one) and if he felt that Governor Barnes knew that Coughenour was being dispatched to “keep the order in Putnam County.” Sills told me that he had no reason not to believe Coughenour, especially since phone records showed that there were several calls made between Coughenhour and the Governor’s office and that when Sills had searched Coughenhour’s home, the tickets to a Barnes fundraiser were found. Sills told me he couldn’t be sure that Barnes knew, but “Penny Brown-Reynolds damn sure knew.”

Once you compare Macon to cities of similar size, though, a different picture emerges, and it’s not pretty. Macon has more serious crime than our peer cities.

To be sure, it is not spread out evenly across the city. Despite widespread perceptions to the contrary, downtown is reasonably safe. Where I live on Mulberry Street, if I feel like taking a walk late at night, I do it without a second thought, and I have never had a problem.

But not all our residents are so fortunate. In some neighborhoods, people are afraid to go out after dark – or don’t even feel secure in their own homes. That has to change.

So how do we change it? Law enforcement and the courts do have a role to play. The people responsible for the latest outbreak of violence need to be apprehended and removed from society for a very long time. (Some people have already been charged in those incidents.) But our crime problem is not solely a lawenforcement problem. Indeed I would argue that on the whole our police do an outstanding, professional job.

The United States incarcerates the highest proportion of people in the world, and Georgia has one of the highest incarceration rates in the country. Bibb County has a relatively new jail that can house nearly 1,000 inmates legally, and it is already at capacity.

The Business of Book Publishing THE CITY SCENE

any people who read my new book, A Peculiar Tribe of People: Murder and Madness in the Heart of Georgia, first comment on what a twisted and bizarre tale it is. Soon afterwards, however, the conversation usually shifts to questions about the business of publishing the book – how long did it take, how did you get an agent, how are you paid, and (even) how many free copies do you get from the publisher?

It seems that everyone wants to write a book, has an idea for a book, or writes occasionally with an eventual desire to publish a book.

I am always quick to respond that thinking about writing a book isn’t writing, researching isn’t writing, outlining isn’t writing – only putting pen to paper (or, far more likely, keystrokes to a document) is writing. Years ago I had dinner in Washington with Tom Clancy. He told me that he approaches each day’s writing like a job. Some days he knows that nothing he is writing will make it on to the eventual page, but he writes anyway. Other days his writing is nearly perfect, but he stops at an appointed time when his workday is done.

Most writers aren’t megastars like Clancy and are forced to make a living, take care of their family, or both. If you adopt his discipline for writing, perhaps you will force yourself to get up an hour earlier each day and devote that one hour without fail to your task. Maybe you will set aside Saturday mornings for writing but commit to spending that afternoon with your family.

Whatever your choice, you aren’t going to succeed without that necessary discipline.

The best way to get started is to write an article for a magazine - the more local or regional the better your chances of being published (I was paid $75 for my first magazine piece and was grateful for it). If you are a World War II buff, there are magazines for that interest. A fan of bodice-ripping romantic novels? Yes, there’s one for that, too. Buy a copy of that magazine, read the kind of articles they publish (pay careful attention to things such as length, humorous or serious narrative, accompanying photographs), read their submission guidelines, and send them your best-written and polished article for publication. And do not be dismayed if you are initially rejected. J. K. Rowling, who was then a single mother in a walk-up second-floor apartment, was rejected by 12 publishers before Harry Potter was accepted. She is now wealthier than the Queen of England.

Once you have that published article under your belt, you are ready to look for an agent. If you go to your local library, visit the reference desk and ask for a large book usually kept behind the librarian’s desk rather than on open shelves. Called The Writers’ Market, it is wonderfully cross-referenced and lists publishers, agents, magazines, etc. – the true Bible for any writer. Look for an agent who specializes in your genre. CLOSELY follow their guidelines for submissions and queries. If you write science fiction, don’t bother submitting to an agent who only represents academic non-fiction. If they tell you to send a one-page query, don’t waste postage with a three-page form letter you have already mass-produced. Enclose your published magazine article. It is useless to write to one of the “superstar” literary agencies, at least until you become one yourself.

Once you find an agent, don’t assume that this literary marriage will always work. My first agent, who has been in the business for decades, was useless although she continued to represent me for several years. When I switched agents and acquired a fantastic young man in a hot new firm, within four months I had a contract with a highly-respected national publisher for Peculiar Tribe. My former agent had a shotgun approach, hoping that, by sending out 50 proposals, one publisher might show interest.

Conversely, my new agent knew exactly two editors at two different publishing houses who would love my book.

Those two eventually bid against one another for the right to publish it. I signed with Lyons Press (an imprint of giant Globe-Pequot) and was paid one-half of my advance (the amount I am paid upfront for the book) upon signing and the remaining half at the submission of the

final manuscript. Once sales have reached a level sufficient to repay the publisher for that advance, I am then paid royalties on a quarterly sales basis. Additional rights, such as audio tapes and film adaptations, are negotiated separately by my agent. My publisher also purchased the right of first refusal for my next book.

Now that you have an agent, you are ready for serious work. The only answer to your agent or a prospective publisher is “yes.” Need that first draft in ten days? No problem. Delete that section based on your grandmother that you think is the best thing you’ve ever written? Absolutely. I signed my contract on December 17th, two days before my family and I left the country for two weeks. Was I worried that I would be able to make an April 1st deadline for the final draft of the first half of my book with the second half due one month later? Terrified, but I said, “Certainly!” Of course you then have to deliver. If you blow that first big chance, you are hardly likely to get a second shot.

Whatever your calling – whether writing a personal memoir just for your family or penning the next big blockbuster – I wish you great luck. I hope to see you at one of my many book signings and you can tell me what you are writing (rather than just thinking about the process). The answer is ten, and they were all gone on the day I received them.

f we could arrest our way out of our crime problem, we would have already done it.

The fact is that we cannot fix things overnight, but we also can’t afford to do nothing. We have a significant problem with poverty in this community, and too many of our children either drop out of school or graduate from high school inadequately prepared for either the work force or college.

Think of the cohort of 5-year-olds who entered kindergarten this fall. How many of those children do you want to be afraid of in 10 years? That is exactly what is at stake as we decide as a community whether we are serious about tackling poverty and improving educational opportunities. That is why everyone in this community has a stake in the success of our public schools, even if they don’t have any children at home or if their kids are in private school.

Every criminal in our community has made a choice or serious of bad choices that he or she is ultimately responsible for.

However, if the young people in our community have hope and a clear path to a good future, they are much more likely to make the right choice for themselves.

When Macon no longer has serious problems with poverty and hopelessness, we will also no longer have a crime problem.

If you believe these problems are serious, you have the opportunity to make your voice heard at the ballot box.

Locally, we have races for district attorney, school board and district attorney on the ballot (as well as the special election for the Ward III, Post 2 City Council seat). Early voting has already started at the Board of Elections office at the corner of Eisenhower and Pio Nono, and Election Day is Nov. 2. If you have not already voted, go, and take a friend with you. Drivin N Cryin Cargo Trailer Recovered

Bibb Drug Investigators Serve Search Warrant and Arrest Four

The “Quick Silver” cargo trailer belonging to the rock group, “Drivin’ N Cryin” was recovered October 15 by the Gwinnett County Police Department around 1:27p.m. The trailer was located at 4285 South Old Peachtree Street, in Norcross. The trailer was abandoned and all of its contents were missing. No arrests were made pursuant to the recovery.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Investigators are working with Gwinnett authorities to develop new leads in this incident. Anyone with information in reference to this incident is urged to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-746-9441 or the Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.

Bibb Sheriff’s Drug Investigators along with the assistance of the United States Marshal’s Office arrested three adults and one juvenile after serving a search warrant at 2290 Melton Avenue, Thursday afternoon around 1:00p.m..

While serving the search warrant, investigators were able to seize around three pounds of marijuana, four handguns, and $1,877.00 in cash. The marijuana has a street value of approximately $3,500.00.
