The story is just getting started.

A year-long series with a new chapter every issue. Catch up today! Thousands of people have read the first ten chapters of a year long series we are doing on the life of Ed Flowers, also known as Teddy Bear. Ed grew up in Macon, took part in his first bank robbery when he was fourteen years old, a crime for which he never went to jail for. He went on to play baseball at Dudley Hughes High, under coach Goot Stiener where his team won a State Championship in 1964. He practiced with Pete Rose. But Teddy couldn’t stay out of trouble, and ended up in Reidsville Prison right after he graduated, as fucked up as a research monkey, on morphine. Over the next 10 years, his crimes would land him in prison, to which he escaped five times, be put on America’s Most Wanted list, and is believed by some to have robbed over 60 banks. If this is true, that’s more than Jesse James and John Dillinger combined. We are asking that you buy a VIP Membership to 11thHouronline.com to read the rest of Teddy’s story. It’s less than the price of a digital book. $7.99. For that, you’ll get to read the rest of the story, as well as hear audio interviews with Teddy himself, with online digital video coming this fall. The money will help The 11th Hour continue to offer great content, and calendars and reviews to our readers for years to come. So purchase your membership today and continue to read Teddy Bear. LIVE IN THE CORRIDOR.

BY MARY LATHEM In October of 2006, a band of spine-chilling zombies took to the streets of downtown Macon, much to the delight and surprise of the locals. This was Macon’s first annual ‘Thriller’ parade, a reenactment of Michael Jackson’s iconic ‘Thriller’ music video. Since then, the event has become a staple of local culture, attracting thousands of spectators each year. This year, the event will celebrate its 10th anniversary and will take place on Friday, October 30. The parade was the brainchild of Brad and Meg Evans, owners of the 11th Hour, who had seen a video of a zombie flash mob in New York and wanted to create similar event in Macon. With the help of Pilar Wilder, a local dance instructor and executive director of Hayiya Dance Theatre, the Evanses assembled a group of around 60 participants. “It was a true flash mob – we just showed up on 3rd Street and did it,” said Wilder, “It was pretty electric it was inspiring.” Now, the zombie mob has grown to include upwards of 100 dancers each year. Four years ago, the Evanses passed control of the event to Wilder and the Hayiya Dance Theatre. Though the parade has since become a city regulated event, Wilder said that the excitement of the flash mob remains. Though the ‘Thriller’ dance is the centerpiece of the night, the event will also include a variety of family-friendly activities and entertainment. Beginning at 7:00 p.m., spectators will be treated to a pre-show featuring local dance groups, musicians, and other special events such as the popular zombie makeup contest. A full

15-minute replication of the ‘Thriller’ music video, complete with a Michael Jackson impersonator, will begin promptly at 9:00. Following the dance, a street party for both the audience and the dancers will wrap up the night’s festivities around 10:00. Rehearsals are held in Tattnall Square Park each Thursday during October at 7:00 p.m. With the parade only weeks away, dozens of community members are already hard at work preparing for the dance. “You don’t have to be a professional dancer (to participate in the parade),” said Wilder, “Just come and have some fun!” The ‘Thriller’ parade has grown exponentially since its first year, and Wilder hopes that the popularity of the event will eventually lead to other positive changes in downtown Macon. “I would love for ‘Thriller’ to be a catalyst for a huge income night for the businesses downtown,” said Wilder, “I want people to come downtown and stay downtown. There are so many things to see and do.” Wilder also stressed the impact an event like this one can have on the community spirit of Macon. “(The ‘Thriller’ parade) means that there’s hope for us as a community… everyone comes together at the same time to enjoy the same thing,” Wilder said, “When it all boils down, we are more alike than different.” The ‘Thriller’ parade is free and open to the public. For more information, please visit Hayiya-Dance-Theatre on Facebook or call (478) 254-5497. [Individuals and businesses are encouraged to make tax deductible donations of money, time, goods, and services in effort to keep the event free.]

Mama Hill and Mama Louise have kept Macon’s most diverse clientele well fed with delicious, stick-to-ya-ribs soul food since Otis Redding was just an unknown band member in Johnny Jenkins’ Pinetoppers. On one fateful day in the mid-60’s a group a long hairs pooled their money together for two plates. Mama Louise felt sorry for them and gave them all a heaping helping. A friendship between her and The Allman Brothers Band was born. A friendship that took her on quite a ride that included a seat on the tour bus in 1972 and lifelong friendships with Gregg and the rest of the band. OUT&ABOUT Arts + Culture + Entertainment

Hardcourt Bike Polo is a variation of traditional Bicycle Polo in which teams of players ride bicycles and use mallets to strike a small ball into a goal.

A traditional sport without the fuss

INTRODUCING BIKE POLO By Nicole Thurston

Long gone are the formal riding pants and the need for pre and post-match grooming. If you have an interest in learning how to play polo, now all you need is an adventurous spirit and… a bike. That’s right! Macon’s very own Bike Polo team, or as it is officially known as, Hardcourt Bike Polo is sweeping through downtown Macon. Organizer, Tyler Shores says that this new take on an “old school” sport is gaining a lot of momentum. “It started a couple of years ago. People considered it an alternative sport, like roller derby or skateboarding,” said Shores. Hardcourt Bike Polo will typically have two teams of three players. They gather at any place with a hard court, like a basketball court, parking lot, tennis court, etc. According to the official rules, it goes a little something like this: At the beginning of the game, the ball is placed in the middle of the court the players wait behind their own goals. Following a countdown, both teams charge the ball in what is termed the “joust”. A player may hit the ball in two ways: a “shot” or a “shuffle”. A shot is made with either end of the mallet head whereas a shuffle is 18 OCTOBER 8 - 23, 2015

made with the side. In order to score a goal, a player must hit the ball into the opposing team’s goal with a shot; if the player uses a shuffle, the goal does not count and play continues. Following a goal, the scoring team returns to their own half of the court. After the scoring team returns to their half, the scored-on team may cross the half line and resume play. The game continues until a team reaches either a limit of five goals or a predetermined length of time, usually 12 or 15 minutes. Macon’s Bike Polo team is currently recruiting new players. If you are interested in giving this alternative sport a try, Shores recommends you follow their Facebook Page for the latest information. The group meets up every Thursday night between 7 and 9pm at various locations around Macon. (Weather permitting.) By going to the Facebook page, you can keep up where the team plans to meet. “We are really just a bunch of friendly guys, and the team is really open to anyone wanting to come out and join,” said Shores.

THE INTERVIEW Arts + Culture + Entertainment

This Nashville rising star is playing the Cox Capitol Theatre Thursday, Oct. 22!

KELSEA BALLERINI

Tupelo, Mississippi’s Paul Thorn was a prizefighter and sky diver before becoming a rootsy singer/songwriter. As

a boxer, Thorn once fought against Roberto Duran and as a musician, he has toured and collaborated with Sting, Paul Carrack, Joe Diffie, Tanya Tucker, Ronnie Milsap, and Carole King to name a scant few. His newest album released mid-August, To Blessed to Be Stressed, stakes out new territory for this actual son of a preacher man. “This time, I’ve written 10 songs that express more universal truths, and I’ve done it with a purpose: to make people feel good.” Brad Evans caught up with Thorn this past week on the road, where he is touring to support the album. Thorn plays The Cox Capitol Theatre October 2. INTERVIEW BY CLINTON BRANNEN Congratulations on your late night TV debut. How did your mentions compare to when Taylor Swift mentions you on social media? You know. It’s so interesting. Sometimes TV stuff will happen and I will get a bunch and then sometimes I don’t really get any. But yeah, honestly the biggest growth in socials that I’ve seen has been when Taylor posts something because she is the most followed person in the whole entire world, so people are always interested in seeing who she is with and what she’s up to. I’ve definitely seen a lot of growth there. When I did Good Morning America and announced the CMA nominations I saw some and Kimmel I saw some. I think of it like a slow and steady growth, so every now and then it’s fun to have a big pop of numbers, but that’s when you can link it to one certain thing and it’s nice to know when it’s just a casual growth that you’re gaining new followers and new fans by nature.

Which current male country singer do you think you compare to best and why? Well... I think he’s leagues above where I’m at right now, but I think I’ve always really related to Sam Hunt and how his lyrics are so rooted in country and he’s so southern, but you can tell that boy listens to his Drake and I feel like I’m the same way. I grew up in East Tennessee and my roots are very southern but my first concert was Brittany Spears, so just having that blend of genres I think is something I kind of share with him a little bit. You’re a big Ryan Tedder fan. What is your favorite One Republic song and are they your favorite pop band? This is a cliché one but “Apologize.” I will never forget when that song came out and it just stopped me in my tracks. They have that perfect blend of pop sound but lyrics that mean something and are actually clever and smart. I love them. But I listen to a ton of people – Imag-

ine Dragons, The Script, they’re my boy bands. I love all of that stuff. I’ve never seen Imagine Dragons live, but I really want to. Their shows look pretty epic. What can fans who’ve never seen your live show before expect when they see you in Macon? My thing is I’m getting to go to a lot of places I haven’t been before, so my goal is just to try and introduce myself. I play my singles and songs off my record, but I also just play songs I grew up listening to and loving that had an influence on my musical life. I like to get people dancing and singing. We do three covers and one is this giant mash up of a bunch of stuff. You were a writer of each song on your debut album, The First Time. Do you plan to continue writing the songs on your future albums? Absolutely! It’s always been a focus for me and I don’t think I would be an artist if I wasn’t a songwriter honestly. It’s really important for me to establish myself like that as a singer-songwriter. I’m even taking December and January to get back to Nashville and start writing again because I think it’s really important and a huge part of me as an artist that I want to keep driving for sure. With everything you’ve learned since your move to Nashville when you were 15 years old, what advice do you have for other girls who are now considering making the move to Nashville? Letting yourself grow as an artist and a person. For me, the years I had in Nashville to finish high school and go 11thHourOnline.com 27

28 OCTOBER 8 - 23, 2015

THE INTERVIEW

KELSEA CONTINUED to college, while I was still trying to pursue music, gave me those years to grow up and kind of find myself a little bit were so crucial. I was still doing music all of the time but I didn’t stop my life and make it happen. I kept living my life and waited for it to happen and I think those years were so crucial to me. What was it like to hear a song of yours on the radio for the first time, then have that song earn you the title of being the first female artist to have her debut single go No. 1 in nine years? It’s crazy because I look at the other ten women who have had debut No. 1 singles and most of them have had these brilliant careers afterwards. It just makes me really excited to keep going and hopefully keep that momentum up. Carrie Underwood was the last one and I look at her and she’s had this amazing ride since then and I hope to mirror something like that. It all started on March 9th of this year when Taylor Swift tweeted, “Driving around with the @KelseaBallerini EP on repeat.. SO lovely:) #yeahboy #lovemelikeyoumeanit.” Did the tweet come as a surprise or was it planned? And if it was a surprise, what was that day like? Oh no. So many people thought it was planned. It was not planned. I had just gotten home from a write in Nashville and someone tagged me in a screenshot of it and I looked at it and I was like oh whatever, it’s a fake account. And then my phone started blowing up and I was like, oh my gosh, what just happened? Out of everyone, I’m the biggest fan of her just because I remember being 12 and 13 and she was the only young singer-songwriter in country music to look up to, so to have her kind of essentially endorse my music and what I was doing was one of the highest honors ever. While the tweet must have been exciting, what was September 25 like when Taylor invited you on stage at Bridgestone Arena to sing “Love Me Like You Mean It” with her? So cool. It’s one of those full circle moments. I’ve seen her as a fan in the nosebleeds in that arena for every tour. It’s just kind of cool to see what this last year has done because literally on her last tour I was there watching it, then this year I got to sing my No. 1 with her. It was definitely a surreal moment.

Taylor insists her life is no longer “normal” due to her stardom. As her labeled protégé, does this excite you or scare you? It excites me. I think when you choose to not just make music in your bedroom but you choose to make music and share it publically. I think there are definitely different levels to it. You can choose to only want to be a certain level but I think that comes with it and it’s a choice you make when you want to be a public artist. I haven’t really experienced any of that yet because I’m so new still, but I think it’s a choice I made that I’m ok with. What is the best advice you’ve received from Taylor about handling the cruel judgment you may endure during your career? I think there are a lot of similarities because I didn’t come from a show and I’m on a new independent label. And there are a lot of similarities where she was starting out and where I am. She just has a very graceful, humble heart and I think she wants to help people. The fact she’s kind of speaking into that in my life and becoming a mentor and big sister for me is incredible and there’s no one else I would rather look up to than that. For those who have experienced divorce between their parents, what is the message you want them to get out of your song “Secondhand Smoke?” Honestly, for me, that song was the hardest to write and it’s the one I will probably never sing live because I just can’t, but I remember being 12 and 13 when my parents were splitting up and the only question I could think of was, “Does this mean I’m going to be the same way?” And then, I wrote that song last year when I was 21 and I’m learning slowly that the answer is “no.” I just wanted any 12 or 13 year old kid that’s going through that to know the answer is “no.” Does your platform make it easier for you to talk about your breakups since your song lyrics have the potential to help girls who were in your shoes?

Op-Ed Live Show Review Gringo Star w/Monsoon by Justin Cutway Monsoon

Try our Sunday Brunch

Extensive list of homemade milkshakes! 30 OCTOBER 8 - 23, 2015

This past Friday was First Friday in downtown Macon and that means lots of people around and lots of stuff to see and do. The sheer number of openings and shows going on pretty much assured that I wouldn’t be able to catch everything. After weighing my options, I decided to get my First Friday musical experience from The Hummingbird and I had my reasons. I would imagine that most would call me a Hummingbird regular, but truthfully I don’t spend many weekend nights there. The bands haven’t been my favorite for a while now (lots of cover bands and such). Plus, they usually they have just one act and I get bored watching one band play for three hours. On this night however, The Bird had booked three interesting and original bands (two from Atlanta and one from Athens), which meant both of my problems were solved! The Bird is good about starting all of their shows at 10:30, but this one must have kicked off a little early, because when I walked in Tedo Stone was already playing. I had seen Tedo Stone a few years ago but recalled very little of it, so I gave their newest album “Marshes” (released 9/18/15) a few listens before the show. It paid off. They played a number of the songs from the album and it helped me enjoy their performance without being a step behind. Their jangly retro pop rock is easy to move to and the guitars get loud in all the right places. Stone’s voice (while not your typical rock voice) and lyrics filled in to give a lot the songs a little more gravity and presence. While I enjoyed their performance, I couldn’t help but wonder if we would have gotten more energy from them if The Hummingbird had turned out the dart lights and moved the tables. I know it’s a venue/bar, but come on guys. After a short break, Monsoon took the stage (the dart lights were off now, but the tables lingered?). I caught this band during Bragg Jam and was completely blown away by the energy and passion

they brought to their performance and the refreshingly modern take they brought to their music. Tonight was more of the same from this twisting and turning yet still driving punk-pop-rock three piece. There’s a very real sense and understanding of the theatrical in Monsoon’s live show, but they don’t sacrifice the quality of the music. It really just becomes another tool they use to draw in the audience. While it may sound like their songs could fly off the rails at any time, the members of Monsoon are talented musicians that can use this cultivated abandon to keep the audience bouncing and banging their heads throughout the set. Gringo Star was the final act of the night (in the interest of full exposure I missed a couple of their songs while I walked my wife to the car). I’m pretty sure that these fellas have played in Macon before, but I hadn’t done my homework so was listening cold. Right out of the gates you could sense the 60s-ness of their sound. Rolling drums, jangly guitars, bouncing bass lines, stabbing keyboard riffs, gorgeous harmonies; straight ahead enough to make you feel nostalgic. The more closely you listened though, the more you could hear a few modern and psychedelic elements come through (particularly in the guitars). Gringo Star played with a subtle coolness and attitude that aligned perfectly with their musical style as well as their fairly far-reaching indie success. I’m not sure how often I’ll have the luxury of seeing multiple bands at The Hummingbird in the future, but on this night I was reminded of a time when First Friday meant folks would head downtown to see what new things they could find. I even saw several old familiar faces that used to be at every show. Too often now, people have just resigned themselves to the mundane. Let’s hope this show was the beginning of a new trend, and not just a tease.

Alabama at the Georgia National Fair, Perry - It’s been 40 years since a trio of young cousins left Fort Payne, Alabama, to spend the summer playing in a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, bar called The Bowery. It took Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry and Jeff Cook six long years of tip jars and word of mouth to earn the major label deal they’d been dreaming of, but then seemingly no time at all to change the face of country music. ALABAMA is the band that changed everything. They reeled off 21 straight #1 singles, a record that will probably never be equaled in any genre. They brought youthful energy, sex appeal and a rocking edge that broadened country’s audience and opened the door to self-contained bands from then on, and they undertook a journey that led, 73 million albums later, to the Country Music Hall of Fame

Charlie Daniels Band at the Georgia National Fair, Perry Free Outdoor Concert! - “Few individuals have symbolized the South in popular culture as directly and indelibly as Charlie Daniels.”- Encyclopedia of Southern Culture. Charlie Daniels is partly Western and partly Southern. His signature “bullrider” hat and belt buckle, his lifestyle on the Twin Pines Ranch (a boyhood dream come true), his love of horses, cowboy lore and the heroes of championship rodeo, Western movies, and Louis L’Amour novels, identify him as a Westerner. The son of a lumberjack and a Southerner by birth, his music - rock, country, bluegrass, blues, gospel - is quintessentially Southern.

Last Honky Tonk Music Series with The Tallent Brothers BACKPORCH LOUNGE Songwriter brothers Rocky and Brandon Lee Tallent have been performing together since their teens. A musical upbringing equal parts church house (preachin’ daddy) and honky-tonk (2-steppin granny), the Tallent Brothers write songs that reflect a variety of influences and explore a wide range of musical and lyrical themes. Relying on both acoustic and electric instruments to create a soundbed for their narratives, the Tallent Bros make music with no defined boundaries, taking the traditional forms of their influences to their own sonic conclusions. This willingness to follow the muse has lead Rocky and Brandon Lee Tallent on a journey that has included stops in Woodstock, NY, where they worked with Levon Helm, participating in the making of Helms’ final studio album Electric Dirt, to a recent stint as the backing band of legendary country music outlaw David Allan Coe.
