Pub Notes
BRAD EVANS bradevans11@gmail.com Well the nominees are in, finally. It’s time to vote for your favorite businesses, artists, and musicians in our wonderful town. And the Reader’s Choice Awards have been set for the second Thursday in April at the Cox Capitol Theatre. Acts like Dalmatian, Widow Pills, Sabir, Floco Torres, and a few others will be playing some of the best local music Macon has to offer. If you’ve been before, you know it’s quite the celebration, and this year won’t be any different. Tables are available right now for $100 and general admission is just $5. Another surprise we’ll be unveiling that night are the 11th Hour’s new Art Boxes. We were able to partner with The Knight Foundation, Macon Arts Alliance, and 10 of the best local artists in Macon to create some outdoor newspaper boxes that double as public art. Eric Odell, Kirk West, Charles Ladson, Heidi Clinite, Jason Frost, are just a few of the artists that made some old, beat up newspaper boxes look like a million dollars. In April, 10 of these boxes will be spread along the College Hill Corridor. A couple of weeks later, 30 more will be distributed throughout Macon. Never has the 11th Hour been so visible, and we can’t wait to show you what else we have in store.

EAT DRINK BE CHERRY Each year I grab the International Cherry Blossom Festival brochure and I highlight all of the activities I want to check out. Cherry Ice cream? Check. Cool Frisbee dogs at the park? Check. Cherry Blossom Parade? Check. Then every once in a while something new pops up and I stop for a second and try to figure out how to fit in all in. (Not a bad problem to have!) If you have lived in the middle Georgia area for any specific amount of time, you know that March brings those incredibly beautiful snowy-pink blossoms. We wait with baited breath for the sunshine, carnival rides, and musical acts to sweep through Macon. This year, Jake Ferro and his team at the Cherry Blossom Headquarters have worked tirelessly to bring you, what they believe, is going to be the best festival on record. “We have so many new and exciting activities planned this year. The festival will be very family friendly and streamlined,” said President and CEO, Jake Ferro, “One of the biggest changes will be the admission for the festivities at the Miller Lite Central City Park.” Admission will be $5 to enter the park and there will be no parking fees. There will be a temporary fence in place to allow for more activities and increased security. For music lovers, a couple of dates in particular to remember would be Stillwater Live on March 21st and Frankie Ballard on March 27th, both at The Crazy Bull. Tickets for Stillwater are $20 and for Frankie Ballard, $10. On the Cocoa Cola stage at the Miller Lite Central City Park, the festival will host four stars from the “On The Road To The Disney Radio Awards Show,” March 21st from 12 – 4pm. Another popular show will be The Dirty Guv’nahs on April 2nd at Cox Capital Theater. Tickets are $15 in advanced, and $20 at the door. Don’t forget to check out the nightly concerts at the park from March 20th – 29th. If animals are your thing, this year’s festival will certainly not disappoint! At the Miller Lite Central City Park, there will be two very large animal shows performing 3x a day for 10 days at opposite ends of the park: Horses, Horses, Horses and The Aussie Kingdom Kangaroo Show. Another treat for the dog lover will be the ultra-talented Sky Bound Canines on

Field Day...Ah the memories 2nd Annual Adult Field Day May 16th
Public Art to be Installed in Tattnall Square Park Unveiling March 20
TEAM REGISTRATION STARTS MARCH 16TH! Team t-shirts, 50 yard dash, tug of war, over under; all on the hottest day of the school year, of course. But what if you could experience that elementary school fun as an adult? I think you see where this is going... You CAN! On May 16th at Luther William Field, Macon Bibb County Parks & Rec will be hosting the 2nd Annual Adult Field Day. Our events are top secret, but you and your team can expect to participate in events such as dizzy bat relays, egg toss, flip cup and an obstacle course. In addition to this day of nostalgia, you will also get to enjoy giveaways, crown competitions, and live music. If you are interested in participating you’ll need to form a team of 6 of your most (or perhaps least) coordinated pals. Registration begins March 16th and is $150 per team (that’s only $25 per person)! Registration includes a 2015 Adult Field Day T-shirt, swag bag, a post-field day celebration at the field immediately following the event. Payment is due, along with the registration form no later than May 13th, 2014. Team uniforms are not required, however we encourage you to be as creative as you’d like! If you have questions about sponsorship, registration, or need more information, please contact Ellen Banas at 478-751-7694 or at ebanas@maconbibb.us. You can also download the registration form at www. maconbibb.us/recreation/ in the “Forms” tab.
The Art Department in Mercer University’s College of Liberal Arts will present a series of public art exhibitions, titled “Art in the Park,” in Macon’s Tattnall Square Park. The series, which is funded by a Knight Neighborhood Challenge Grant, will take place over the next two years. The first of two five-month installations, “Art in the Park: New Forms from the Southeast,” will be unveiled on March 20 at 6 p.m. Sculptures by seven artists will be on display during the kickoff event, which will also include a tour of the recently opened Tattnall Square Center for the Arts. “The Art Department is very excited about this opportunity to engage Mercer students and the Macon community with public artworks,” said Craig Coleman, associate professor of art at Mercer. A call for submissions was released earlier this year, and the finalists were selected in February. The selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend for their efforts. The first installation will remain on display in Tattnall Square Park through Aug. 14. The kickoff event will also include an exhibition by Preston Poe, who will serve the first of two 11-month residencies as a featured artist of the “Art in the Park” program. Poe is a video sculptor/sound artist from Tampa, Florida, who is the creator of “YouTunes,” a performance sound project. Put simply, Poe spontaneously writes, plays, sings and records songs based off of a simple questionnaire. For his first exhibition in Macon, Poe was given a list of local artists and musicians to contact. He has made several trips to the city since and has spent days interviewing members of the local arts community. From these sessions, Poe will create customized songs that will be performed live on March 20.

Jury Duty It should not be surprising that so many of our citizens are apathetic about serving on jury duty. When 2/3 of registered voters don’t even bother to take 5 minutes to vote in a national election, as happened last November, how can they be expected to feel compelled to report for jury duty? I don’t know what

the answer is. I only know that it is an embarrassment to our community that so few people would appear for something that is not only a right but also a privilege. A couple of weeks ago Bibb County prosecutors were ready to seek justice for the family of Gail Spencer, the legal secretary who was murdered in her own home in October, 2012, as part of a conspiracy to embezzle money from the Macon law firm she worked for. Macon Police detectives did an outstanding job of cracking the case in the days following Spencer’s murder. Three of the four defendants pled guilty to murder last year. Jury selection for the fourth defendant’s trial was scheduled to begin on February 23rd. Unfortunately, the trial was postponed until April because, out of 145 jurors summoned to appear by the court, only 52 jurors appeared. Of those 52 potential jurors, 13 were excused from jury service for legitimate reasons. Superior Court Judge Howard Simms had no choice but to postpone the murder trial until this April due to an insufficient jury pool. Hasn’t the family of Mrs. Spencer been through enough without having to face the postponement of this trial? Not to mention all of the work to prepare for the trial by both the district attorney’s office and the defendant’s lawyer. Witnesses had been subpoenaed and, more than likely, had arranged to take time off of work to testify. Court reporters, bailiffs, and other officials have had to reschedule their work-week. Sadly, the family of Mrs. Spencer will have to, again, go through the agony of mentally preparing themselves for the trial that they expected to take place the last week in February. It is simply unacceptable. Juror truance is not a new problem for the Bibb judicial circuit, nor is it a problem unique to our courts in Macon/ Bibb. Jury pools are selected from both a county’s voter registration rolls as well as the state driver’s license database. Unfortunately, because some people fail to update their address with the driver’s license bureau when they relocate, this can cause their jury summons to be sent to the wrong address. This was one issue according to the Macon/Bibb Sheriff’s Department, who had to send out a dozen deputies to look for absent jurors on February 23rd. I am sure that these deputies had more pressing matters to attend to than chasing down missing jury members. To be fair, the financial burden on those who work paycheck-to-paycheck to serve on a jury is significant. If called to serve on a jury, the juror may be required to
14 MARCH 12-27, 2015
miss 2-3 days of work. The daily pay for a Bibb County juror is $20 for the first day and $25 per each subsequent day. Many employers do not pay their employees for time spent serving on a jury. In Georgia, counties with higher rates of poverty tend to have poorer turnouts for jury service. Jurors may be excused from service for a variety of reasons such as: age (persons over the age of 70 are not required to serve), being the primary caretaker of a child under the age of 6, medical reasons (with a doctor’s excuse), being a full-time student, being a parent who home-schools their child(ren), or those serving in active military duty. When you receive a summons to report for jury duty in the mail it appears that it is merely an obligation imposed by our state or federal courts. In truth, jury duty is not only an obligation, but a right, spelled out in the United States Constitution. It is a right fought and died for by our soldiers from the revolutionary war up through our present day. Potential jurors who fail to appear in court can face fines and even jail time if found to be in contempt of court for not having a legitimate excuse as to why they failed to appear. It should not be surprising that so many of our citizens are apathetic about serving on jury duty. When 2/3 of registered voters don’t even bother to take 5 minutes to vote in a national election, as happened last November, how can they be expected to feel compelled to report for jury duty? I don’t know what the answer is. I only know that it is an embarrassment to our community that so few people would appear for something that is not only a right but also a privilege. For victims of crimes and their families, it must feel as if their lives don’t matter to their fellow citizens when they can’t take the time to show up for jury service. It’s just another example of how, if we all followed the golden rule in our daily lives, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” society would be a better place. So, the next time you receive a summons for jury duty in the mail, instead of whining and trying to get out of it, try remembering all of the people who made the ultimate sacrifice to secure and protect the right to a trial by jury. Also, think about the family of Gail Spencer, who is having to relive a nightmare they should never have had to go through in the first place.

An Open Letter To The Georgia State Senate From Haleigh’s Mom
Bubble Soccer!
I have written several articles now in favor of the legalization of medicinal cannabis oil and have taken a lot of flak from people for my stance. I’ve been told that legalization of the oil would be opening the door to the complete and total legalization of recreational pot and that no Republican in their right mind should have this opinion.
Dear Georgia State Senators: I am Janae’ Cox, mother of Haleigh Cox. We moved to Colorado last year to get Haleigh on CBD oil. We couldn’t wait. Are you a parent? If you are please close your eyes. Imagine holding your child’s lifeless body in your arms. Their lips are blue and their skin is grey. Now imagine yourself using your breaths to help your child breathe. Imagine pumping on your child’s chest pleading for them to just take a breath. Got it? This was my life almost daily with my daughter. I have done CPR on my child multiple times a

maconbubblesoccer@gmail.com More Info: facebook/MaconBubble day. Why? Well because she was maxed out on 4 different seizure drugs. Most of her medications are over the recommended dose for her weight. At one point she was on a 14-year-old dose of one of her medicines. She was 4. I know everyone is afraid of the “high” people get from marijuana, but my child was being prescribed that “high” legally in Georgia. They are called seizure meds. My child was on 2 benzodiazepines. Her eyes would be constricted to the point you could barely see her pupils. When she was in the hospital they would have to push Narcan to help combat the high she was given. My 4 year old slept 23 hours a day. Most of the time she would have to have a machine breath for her. Why? Because of the legal seizure meds she was on. Also there is a worry that we do not know the effects of cannabis oil on the brain. I do know the effects of 200+ seizures. I do know the effects of not getting oxygen to the brain due to not breathing. My child will never have a high IQ and will never be “normal” but I do know with cannabis oil she will be happy. She will be awake and aware of her surroundings. We have been in Colorado for almost a year on a high CBD low THC strain. She has gone from having over 200+ seizures to having 10-12 on a really bad day. Haleigh now smiles at me. I heard her say Momma for the first time. She says “night night” to me every night when I put her to bed. She is trying to sit on her own and holds her head up. These may be the most minor things to you, but to me they are huge steps in the right direction. Tears fall constantly.

A few weeks ago, I got into a very spirited discussion on Facebook with a Congressman from Louisiana, who is a doctor no less, named John Fleming, who ended up taking my comments off of his page when I started disputing some of the nonsense that he was spewing in the name of science. He had posted some study from a group he had never read, stating that cannabis oil did nothing to help children with seizures. When I pointed out to the good Republican Congressman that there were several things in the study that did in fact indicate that there the results of the study in some areas were not definite but inconclusive, he went into a rant that sounded like a member of the Westboro Baptist Church. I was polite, but stern, and told him that his actions and words denoted former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi when she suggested that Congress vote on Obamacare and then read the bill. That’s when all my comments disappeared. Needless to say, I’ll do everything within my power to get this Neanderthal out of office comes election time, but I digress. The Georgia House overwhelmingly approved HB1 a couple of weeks ago, which is the bill our Representative Allen Peake authored to get cannabis oil legalized in Georgia . It is now in the hands of the State Senate who screwed the proverbial pooch last year when they allowed State Senator Renee Unterman of Atlanta to add things to it that doomed it to failure when it went back to the House. Hopefully this year will be different. In an effort to gain support for Peake’s bill, Janae’ Cox, the mother of Haleigh Cox who has become a refugee from her own state, has written an open letter to the State Senators of Georgia who hold the fate of their residency as well as the future potential well being of her daughter in their collective hands.

An Open Letter, cont. My child is waking up from a horrible nightmare, and I get to see the miracle with my own eyes. We have gotten her all the way off of 2 seizure meds and are currently working on our 3rd. All of this is great, but I had to leave my husband in Georgia. He has missed out on the changes with his daughter because our state doesn’t want to help. How is this fair? Could you live without your wife and children for a year? Could you miss out on birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas? Why must we split up our family? Why must I choose between my child’s life and my marriage? Please vote yes on HB-1. SB185 will not help my child because she is already excluded from the drug trial. She has Type 1 Diabetes. They say that this can play a factor in the results of the trial drug. But, if I have found something that is already working, why would I make the change? HB-1 gives us the option to come home and live normal lives. It gives us the option to have access to life saving medication. Please give us that option and bring us back home. Sincerely, Janae’ Cox Janae’ has referred in her letter to SB185, which is a total nonsense bill authored by State Senator Lindsey Tippins of Cobb County that virtually guts Peake’s bill entirely as it would limit the amount of people allowed to use the oil to children under 18 years old that would have to be approved to be a part of a clinical trial done by Georgia Regents University that is currently already in place. It would also knock out all of the other diseases that Peake added in such as ALS and cancer. Tippins has been quoted as saying that his bill would save millions of dollars and that Peake’s bill has the potential to cost millions. This is total garbage as the clinical trial already taking place has cost Georgia taxpayers millions of dollars. Expanding it would cost millions more and only help a select few. HB1 wouldn’t cost anything except the paper it was printed on. As a further plea to Georgians, Janea has added: “As a parent of a seizure child, it is hard to think of another year going by without legislation for cannabis oil. As I talk to
friends and hear of their children suffering everyday, I can’t help but cry. Many have heard of HB-1, but have not many have heard of SB185. The Georgia State Senate decided to write a bill to pass legislation that would allow a study at some of Georgia’s hospitals. What many don’t know is that there is already a study being done. There are 50 slots open but only 2 children have been able to get into it. Many have tried, but most have failed. My child would not be able to be in the study because she has Type 1 Diabetes and she has already been on cannabis oil. So why do you need legislation for a study? You don’t. I could go to a doctor and ask them to do the study and they could apply without the lawmakers even knowing. SB-185 only allows for children under the age of 21 to be a part of the study. Since when did Epilepsy end at the age of 21? What about the children that are 20 years old? Do you start them on the medicine and then have to take them off after they turn 21? The bill will not help anyone. It will not bring the family’s home that had to leave to gain access to this life saving medication. Haleigh needs a little added THC to help with her seizure control. This bill will only allow for .3% THC. Most of the families that have come to Colorado have their children on added THC and are getting much better seizure control. So please call your legislators and tell them that you support HB-1.” As I have written in other columns, passing this law has now come close to home to me as I have found out that one of my cousins’ husbands has had cancer for many years in California and has seen firsthand the benefits of treatment with cannabis oil. In her words, “Cannabis oil adds quality of life. “ Doesn’t everyone deserve that? I sincerely hope that our Solons in Atlanta read and re-read this heart wrenching letter and do the right thing for Georgia and pass HB1 as close as they possibly can to its’ original form. Will there be tweaks and adjustments? There always is in politics. I just hope like hell that HB1 doesn’t become politics as usual which would end up keeping Haleigh and Janae’ in Colorado, instead of bringing them home.

BY ANGEL COLLINS
If you’ve ever met Koryn Young, it was probably on someone’s porch, holding a glass of red, talking knowledgeably about why it is great living InTown like a true southern porch sitter. And while the idles of the south came easy to Koryn Young, if you’d told her 8 years and 1 month ago that she would take to little old Macon, GA like a moth to a flame, she would have called you crazy and laughed in your face. The New Yorker, a California transplant, had the life she loved, the friends she adored, and a city that offered her everything she had ever wanted. But Macon had her one true love and after a year of back and forth visits, they decided that it would be easier overall if she was the one who did the moving. “I was never going to leave NY and I was going to live there forever and if I moved, it was never going to be to a small town. But every time he brought me to Macon, I loved it,” said Young. Young’s move to Macon included her and her beau moving to Orange Street, working from home for Educational Performance Tours, the job she’d held since 1988 in New York, volunteering with CASA, and then becoming interested in the College Hill Alliance in its beginning stages. Working on the committee called The Vibe, she met Creighton Rosental, a Philosophy professor at Mercer. Their first event was a Save the Halls event, Music Matters in Macon. She co-chaired the concert committee with Dan Zook and the path to her downtown evangelism was set. “About a year later, Dan was asked to take over the Magnolia Street Soapbox Derby and he asked me to run it with him,” said Young. “It was so grassroots back then. We sat on the porch, had some drinks, and planned the event. This is my 5th year, and the number of people who have participated, volunteered, and made it happen… it’s just unmatched.” Despite heading up this very busy event, first in conjunction with College Hill and now as its own separate event, Koryn didn’t let herself rest easy. She took on the challenge to revitalize Moonlight Miles, the Bragg Jam 5K event, started the Men of InTown calendar, and was nominated (and accepted) to the 2012 class of Leadership Macon (The Best Class Ever). It was in this class that she learned that big employers were discouraging new employees moving to Macon from living downtown.
11 Things You Didn’t Know About Koryn
I do not like chocolate. I love people with tattoos, but
I do not have any because I do not like needles. I love
having people at my house. I don’t care if they go in my fridge and help themselves. Porch time is my favorite
thing about moving to the South. I drink red wine. Mostly because I enjoy the taste and the tingle. There is not
much of anything that a nice glass of vino, great compa-
ny and a porch can’t fix. In High School I wrote a random note - put it in someone’s locker, and watched in three
classes as they passed it around and tried to figure out
who it was from. It was purely for my own entertainment. Oh - and it was not mean. I promise. I would never send someone a mean note. Random acts of kindness make me happy. Green has always been my favorite color.
I love and hate the South...all in one sentence...yep it’s
like that. I do not like anything about cooking. However, dining out is one of my most guilty pleasures. I always wanted to be a tall blond. But, I am extremely happy
being me. When I was three I tried to have my mom ar-
rested. I told the police she kidnapped me because I did
not want to sit down in the car (back then seat belts were optional and kids ran free in the front seat). When they
had her in handcuffs and were taking me away, I shouted “no Mommy, don’t let them take me. I’m sorry Mommy”. I am in love. I become ashamed when people attached
to me display bad behavior. I am in love... so I always ask people about their love story. There is nothing better than a good love story.
She applied for a Knight Neighborhood Challenge Grant and started the Macon Fam Tour where organizations, individuals, and employers were taken around downtown, shown the restaurants, the events, the shopping, the neighborhoods, and ended with a porch party where they got to meet the residents of InTown and hear their stories for themselves. “When I learned that people were being told that moving to downtown Macon was a bad idea, I put together the familiarization tour to show that there are a lot of amazing things happening downtown, it’s not dangerous, and it’s not a terrible place to live and it’s been an incredible experience watching people begin to understand this,” said Young. Young continues to be passionate and connected to the community. While she is considering this year to be her last year at the helm of the Magnolia Soapbox Derby, she is also looking into more volunteer arenas. She participated in the InTown Christmas Tour of Homes, she was Jean Massey to her partner Nathan Dee’s Jack Massey for Riverside Cemetery’s Spirits in October. She is considering working with foster children in the community. “I have 6 brothers and sisters from my father. Mom remarried and stepdad adopted me which is how I have the last name Young. He and mother had one daughter Nikka and one adopted sister, Shantel. My stepdad has 5 brothers and sisters and I have a ton of aunts and uncles on that side. I have a ton of extended half brothers, sisters, and cousins so family is not lost on me,” said Young. It explains why she is so committed to her downtown family. “Living downtown is what makes living in Georgia so much better. I believe it’s a bubble within a bubble. The bigger bubble has things that I don’t always understand like racism and hunting, but our bubble is the kind of a place where you can thrive, there are a ton of people and diversity is a pleasure, food is a pleasure, art is not few and far between, and there are plenty of places to hear music, socialize, and dance. What we have is rare for a small town. It’s also very hard not to make friends here. You can make a village here and your village will touch someone else’s village and everyone in the bubble is here to do something awesome.”

LIVE IN THE CORRIDOR.
Macon's College Hill Corridor is thriving with neighborhood excitement, community activity and housing opportunities for all ages. Live in a walkable, affordable, safe, vibrant and historic area that's within short distance of Mercer
Dalmatian is comprised of a group of talented, hard-working fellas. Their sound continues to expand and explore with each release in a way that keeps them exciting and relevant. Obscure Discoteca, the group’s third release, showcases their collective attention to detail and ability to incorporate music from a variety of places, often within the span of a few seconds in one song in a way that is at times jarring, almost always unexpected and quite often, pretty effin’ great.

Track one: “Fugu” First 60 seconds of the song: Esoteric sounds accented by an egg shaker and frantic bongos. Not the “garden variety, mostly off-tempo drum circle” bongos, but FRANTIC “I’m about to be roasted alive and eaten by cannibals on a deserted island” brand of frantic bongo playing minus the threat of imminent death. Out of nowhere, the song literally breaks in half (time that is). Indecipherable mumblings strangely fit the moment fill my ears, quickly followed by a shout as the song settles into a syrupy/dancey vamp that (if you listen hard enough) actually has a banjo buried in the mix. 2:20: the tempo changes again and a dueling guitar riff that immediately reminded me of Thin Lizzy at their height takes the song in a completely different and unexpected direction that is perfect at the same time. 3:25: I had a vision of an old man in tired whitey tighties stomping and shimmy-ing on his front porch to his favorite song like no one is watching. 4:00: Some sweet 60’s “ooh’s” come in that would make Mick Jagger proud. 4:25: Presenting…a tambourine!!! 5:25: The boys take it down several notches, winding the song down with a simple arrangement of lead and background vocals and one guitar. Track two: “If I Was Your Lover” First 30 seconds: The song opens with a killer riff that veers out of control in the best way possible before self-destructing and flailing down a ravine in a flurry of rock ‘n’ roll abandon.
0:45: The song’s verse is carried by a driving bass line paired with an organ that gives the song a “makes me wanna proudly put jazz hands in the air and wave them like I just don’t care” vibe. 4:40: A long Nels Cline-ish/jazzy guitar solo. Normally, I’m not a big fan of excessive noodling on the gitfiddle. Over the years, I’ve discovered that most guitar players “get in the zone” and play far too long, becoming so self-absorbed that he/ she does not realize that the audience has left the building. This solo, like many of them on the record, saunters right up to the cheesy background Muzak earworm line, stops and mockingly executes a solo that, if taken out of the context of this song, would be self-indulgent noodling usually reserved for old white dudes that listen to too much Pat Metheny and probably un-ironically attended the John Tesh concert at the Grand. Somehow this solo works. Not only does it work, it’s pretty effin’ fantastic and there’s no need to understand why it’s so great. Just embrace it. Track 3: “Miss Mandy Molly” Decidedly more laid back than the other tracks. Opens with a simple acoustic guitar part and vocal, tastefully paired with some spacey background sounds. At times this track perfectly exemplifies their so-called “G-folk,” there are soo many things going on throughout this song that it simply isn’t fair to categorize this track as “G-folk,” whatever that term may mean. Track 4: “Cherry Street” Great track that I’m not going to even begin to describe. All you need to know is the video for this song has to inspire the next “Gangam style” dance craze or I quit the Internet. I mean it Internet. Make that happen. In short, that video’s slap full of some wicked awesome white boy dance moves. Track 5: “Obscure Discoteca” It’s the title track and the last one of the EP. I trust you can figure that out on your own because the truth of the matter is that I’m exhausted by the number of references and influences that this band continues to incorporate as their sound grows.

Describing the album as “a synthesis between their zany bluegrass sound and my long-suffering, implosive-depressive novelist view of the South,” White says it fulfills his “conniving goal to become a happy bluegrass man.” Sounding like an ivory-tower academic one minute and a stand-up comedian the next, he says “versus” addresses the “conflagration of opposing mindsets” as an answer to the question, “What happens when we throw these two unlikely elements together?”

If you’ve gotten into zydeco music, or felt its influence, or watched the world celebrate this great aspect of Louisiana culture over the past 30+ years it’s likely been because of Buckwheat Zydeco. Many millions witnessed the excitement when Jimmy Fallon chose him to open the final episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: The show opened “cold” with a tight close up of Buck’s accordion, then – joined by Fallon on guitar and backed by the Roots – they kicked off a rousing rendition of “On A Night Like This.”

$22+ Wet Willie, originally from Mobile, Alabama, relocated to Macon, Georgia in 1969, where they were signed to Capricorn Records, and began a relentless recording and touring schedule. They broke into the national charts with their Southern Rock anthem "Keep On Smilin'" in 1974, with other hits to follow during the '70's, like "Streetcorner Serenade," "Countryside of Life" and "Weekend" for Capricorn and Epic Records. Wet Willie continues to tour, currently in support of their most recent release Miles of Smiles on Atlanta's Hittin' the Note label.

Some people take up a life of playing music with the goal of someday reaching a destination of fame and fortune; but from the get-go, Keen just wanted to write and sing his own songs, and to keep writing and singing them for as long as possible. Earlier this year, Keen played a handful of sold-out theater dates with Lyle Lovett, just two old friends swapping songs on acoustic guitars like they used to do on Keen's front porch in College Station. But the lion's share of his concert schedule still finds him playing full-tilt with his seasoned road and studio band: Brotherton on guitar, Bill Whitbeck on bass, Tom Van Schaik on drums, and Marty Muse on steel guitar. "I've been with this band for 20 years now," Keen says proudly. "I used to think that was just sort of an interesting fact, but now it's almost a total anomaly — that just doesn't happen much. Keen’s most recent album is more on the bluegrass side and is receiving rave reviews. Rencelty featured on NPR and a new favorite on satellite radio’s Outlaw Country, Keen is gaining momentum and finally reaching the masses, if only those that appreciate good music.

On one fateful day in the mid-60’s a group a long hairs pooled their money together for two plates. Mama Louise felt sorry for them and gave them all a heaping helping. A friendship between her and The Allman Brothers Band was born. A friendship that took her on quite a ride that included a seat on the tour bus in 1972 and lifelong friendships with Gregg and the rest of the band. In 2007, Mama Hill passed on, but Mama Louise kept on keepin’ on. She calls us every other day, saying “y’all ready yet! I’m ready to go back to work.” To which we reply, “We’re almost there Mama.”

STILLWATER @ CRAZY BULL Stillwater was an emerging southern rock band in the ‘70s. Their song “Mindbender” charted in the top in 1978. The band existed from 1973 to 1982 and was based in Warner Robins and released two albums on Capricorn Records. It is rumored that scenes from the movie “Almost Famous” were taken directly from this band’s escapades. The band reformed in the mid ‘90s and if we are lucky, get to see a reunion concert like this one once a year.

Their live performances showcase the band’s depth of chemistry and skill, which are both gaining notice.
THURSDAY, MAR 26 JARED WEEKS @ CRAZY BULL Former lead singer of the acclaimed rock group Saving Abel, Weeks has gone solo and is touring the southeast
to promote his new music.
FRIDAY, MAR 27 JIMMY HALL & WET WILLIE AT COX CAPITOL THEATRE Wet Willie, originally from Mobile, Alabama, relocated to Macon, Georgia in 1969, where they were signed to Capricorn Records, and began a relentless recording and touring schedule. They broke into the national charts with their Southern Rock anthem “Keep On Smilin’” in 1974, with other hits to follow during the ‘70’s, like “Streetcorner Serenade,” “Countryside of Life” and “Weekend” for Capricorn and Epic Records. Wet Willie continues to tour, currently in support of their most recent release Miles of Smiles.
SATURDAY, MAR 28 ROBERT EARL KEEN @ COX CAPITOL THEATRE Some people take up a life of playing music with the goal of someday reaching fame and fortune; but from the get-go, Keen just wanted to write and sing his own songs. Earlier this year, Keen played a handful of sold-out theater dates with Lyle Lovett, just two old friends swapping songs on acoustic guitars like they used to do on Keen’s front porch in College Station. But the lion’s share of his concert schedule still finds him playing full-tilt with his seasoned road and studio band Keen’s most recent album is more on the bluegrass side and is receiving rave reviews. Recently featured on NPR and a new favorite on satellite radio’s Outlaw Country, Keen is gaining momentum and finally reaching the masses, if only those that appreciate good music.
