The Readers Choice Awards have been going on for a while now. You know the deal. The best bands in Macon, come together on one night at the Cox Capitol Theatre to celebrate what our readers have voted are the best establishments, musicians and back woods catfish houses that our town has to offer. It’s a real contest, not an annoying click-bait advertising hard sell. I’ve always enjoyed seeing what our readers think about our town, and I think more than anything it shows exactly where we shine. There were years when the best new business category had to look far and wide to find new businesses in Macon. It was the same with some of the band categories. So to see a list of nominees like we have this year makes me smile. And over 12,000 people have voted this year! Our paper, you may have noticed, is bigger than it has ever been in our 13-year history. There is nothing that can say Macon is growing up in the right way better than that, and we couldn’t be happier about it. This year, Sabir a very impressive new hip hop artist, is playing as well as my personal favorite, Dalmatian. The Widow Pills, Dean Brown, and Floco Torres, all great artists, will also be performing. Danny Davis, the effervescent yet flexible bassist for Jubee and the Morning After among other projects, will be hosting the show. The Red Carpet, where some of the best and funniest photos of the year will be taken, starts at 6 and the show starts at 7. A few tables for six are still available and cost $100, general admission is $5 at the door. You can call 5087096 for a table or visit the Cox Capitol Theatre website for tickets. Hope to see you there!

NATIVE / NEW BY ANGEL COLLINS
Matt Odom: In a Snap To say Matt Odom is “Macon Made” is not an exaggeration. Born at the Coliseum Hospital in Macon, he went to St. Peter Claver, a private Catholic School, Westside High School, and graduated from Mercer University with a degree in Human Services. Matt Odom lives, works and plays in Macon and doesn’t regret one day of it. Odom didn’t start out as a photographer but had a full time job while doing photo shoots on the side. It was when life handed him lemons that Odom decided to squeeze those lemons right back into life’s eyes. “Originally I was working for the State of Georgia and doing photography in addition to that,” said Odom. “I got laid off and just decided to take a stab at photography fulltime. My thinking was I could always go back to [the] corporate world if it didn’t work out. I’m glad it did.” Being in Macon has not hindered his career path at all. While many who are “Macon made” see the city as a detriment, Odom has noticed the changes taking place and how those changes have helped him with his freelance career. “I think Macon is heading in the right direction,” said Odom. “I recently was in Nashville and noticed some similarities especially in downtown development. Macon has been a huge cog in my business. It allows me to work at a nice steady pace and I’m able to continue to build my portfolio. Matt Odom has taken advantage of the low cost of living, proximity to a major city, and technological advances to make his place in the freelance world. While there are many things that Macon, Georgia isn’t, he has capitalized on the things that it is and is now supporting himself in a field that challenges and interests him daily. It also gives him time to donate his energy and resources to his community. He donates shooting time to his elementary alma mater and is a volunteer coach for the Macon Soccer Club. He has taken well to being a freelance photographer. “I’m generally busy almost every week now,” said Odom. “I just jumped in and went full gusto. I think if you are
scared to succeed then you won’t achieve!” He was asked by Mercer University and Fort Valley State University to shoot their sports promo. He has proven his skill in that arena since he was the photographer for Mercer University’s football, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse posters. “I shoot almost daily for Macon Magazine, Georgia Trend, and just recently shot for Buzzfeed,” said Odom. “This summer and fall I will be in two upcoming shows here in Macon, [one] at the Macon Arts Alliance and the other at The 567.” However, his heart is in doing editorials. “I absolutely love shooting editorial work because it stretches my imagination,” said Odom. For his future goals Odom gets more specific. “I would like to start shooting ad campaigns for national retail and consumer brands.” Considering the trajectory of his career, that future is not very far off.

Macon’s Bragg Jam Returns Saturday, July 25 The Bragg Jam board has spent the last six months planning, growing, and nurturing the best music and arts festival Middle Georgia has to offer. Not only will 2015 bring more bands and more stages to Macon, for an incredible night of music, but the Bragg Jam organization has also grown to encompass two more events throughout the year: Magnolia Soapbox Derby and Second Sunday. The 2015 Second Sunday Concert Series kicks off with Nashville’s KOPECKY on April 12 at Coleman Hill Park, and Bragg Jam will be making the event extra festive by announcing the first wave of bands for the 2015 Bragg Jam Concert Crawl just before KOPECKY takes the stage. Coleman Hill Park will also serve as a stage for the 2015 Bragg Jam Concert Crawl, bringing music to one of several soon-to-be-announced outdoor stages for the event. Other additional venues this year include Taste & See, Mount de Sales Academy, Just Tap’d and two new stages additional stages at Twang Southern Tastes & Sounds. Taste & See and Mount de Sales’ new stages will boast earlier, family-friendly entertainment to widen the festival’s audience and bridge the gap between Arts & Kids Fest and the Concert Crawl. Macon Film Festival will be teaming up with Bragg Jam for a series of “Festie Bestie” events during the small gap between the two festivals, which are sure to delight both film and music fans. And of course there will still be Moonlight Miles, the Saturday before the Concert Crawl, on July 18, and the fabulous Patron Party, on Friday, July 24, at the beautiful, historic Terminal Station in downtown Macon. With so many new events, new stages, more bands, more music and more ways to have fun than ever, this year is sure to be one that Macon will remember as one of the busiest and best yet! About Bragg Jam Inspired by late musicians and brothers Brax & Tate Bragg and operated as a 501c3 under a volunteer board of directors, Bragg Jam has now given over $150,000 back to local charities in memory of Brax and Tate. Proceeds will continue to benefit the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and other efforts that promote nature, art and music in the community. Since 1999, Bragg Jam has evolved from an impromptu jam session to citywide music festival to a full-scale arts festival and Macon’s premier music event. Rebuilding Afghanistan The exorbitantly-expensive 2001-2014 war in Afghanistan ensnared the United States after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Our stated goal at our entry was to dismantle Al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power. Then-President George W. Bush demanded that Afghanistan extradite Osama bin Laden to the United States and expel Al-Qaeda. Neither happened and much of Al-Qaeda’s leadership escaped to Pakistan where bin Laden was finally killed by U. S. Navy Seals in 2011 after Barack Obama became president. During the war more than 4,000 American soldiers and contractors associated with the U.S. and our allied forces were killed, while more than 15,000 Afghan soldiers lost their life. A low estimate of 20,000 Afghani civilians also were killed. By 2011, when the U.S. troop strength increased from 44,000 to 84,000, the monthly cost to the U.S. increased from $4.4 billion to $6.7 billion. In fact, the estimate for the cost of deploying one U.S. soldier in Afghanistan was over $1 million per year, totaling a cost to us for 2011 alone to be $468 billion. That cost was a large reason for our withdrawal of combat forces in 2014 along with waning public support. It is not surprising that Afghanistan and its infrastructure was decimated by decades of war. Its education system basically ceased operations. In 2001, 1.2 million Afghani children attended schools, including less than 50,000 girls. Today, when more than 5.7 million refugees have returned to Afghanistan, that number has increased to 8.2 million students attending school, including 3.2 million girls. Recognizing that the nation cannot succeed without education, the U.S. State Department, through its development agency U.S.A.I.D., in 2014 approved a $92 million Congressionally-mandated expenditure to revive Afghanistan’s higher education system. The University of Massachusetts received the largest share of that competitive contract and, as one part of their mission, was tasked with establishing two associate degrees (requiring only two years of study) in Information Technology and in Bio-Medical Engineering. UMASS issued a national request for proposals and only two two-year colleges in the United States were chosen as sub-contractors. One was Spokane (Washington) Community College which has a long-established international program. The other was our own Central Georgia Technical College which received a multi-year generous contract to establish an Information Technology degree in Afghanistan and to deliver extensive educational services via teleconference capabilities. Considering the national competition, that victory is all the more impressive given that CGTC’s international program has been 14 MARCH 27 - APRIL 10, 2015
operating for less than two years. Two of the compelling reasons given for the selection of CGTC was the fact that the college has delivered more than fourteen million dollars’ worth of training to the U.S. Air Force, plus the abundance of state-of-the-art teleconference equipment that will allow CGTC’s instructors to deliver their lectures and training to Afghanistan while remaining safely in central Georgia. These sessions will be synchronous, which means that a student there can ask questions or seek clarifications in real time as they arise instead of watching a pre-recorded lecture. If he or she doesn’t understand a certain point or needs to study for an exam, he or she can go back and pull up the lecture on-line to revisit any portion desired to review. The program in Afghanistan will take place at Kabul Polytechnic University, the second largest university in the capital city of 3.2 million people. There is so much demand for an IT associate degree that almost 2,000 applicants sought admission to the program and only 40 were chosen out of the many who were tested. They are now undergoing intensive English-language training in order to be ready to undertake their two-year courses of study that will be delivered in English. In a rapidly-evolving world of education, job training, and economic development, it is no longer sufficient to open the doors and expect students and customers to find their way to a provider. Those who might think that providing educational services to Afghanistan falls outside CGTC’s mission haven’t been paying attention over the past few years as state support has diminished while the need for services has increased. Adult education programs that offer an opportunity to receive a GED for those adults who dropped out of school are provided free of charge by CGTC, as are EnglishAs-A-Second-Language programs to those who are trying to make a life for themselves and their families here in the United States. The financial shortfall has to be made up somewhere, and this endeavor for CGTC is truly a win-win situation in which citizens of two very different countries and cultures will all benefit. Education and job training can only strengthen both.

Macon Has A Future After All! What an awesome time to be in Middle Georgia! Even though the Macon’s Cherry Blossom Festival saw more rain than shine this year, it certainly went out with a bang of wonderful weather over the last weekend.
Soon to be 562 Cherry St.
The crime rate is lower, even though for some reason over the past couple of weeks the thugs have awaked again as there has been a rash of senseless killings, largely in part to a harmonious relationship between our top cop Macon-Bibb Sheriff David Davis, our District Attorney David Cooke and most of our sitting judges, but mainly Judge Howard Simms; Downtown Macon is revitalizing again, as great eateries and business start to fill up the ghostly remains of businesses of the past; Mercer is growing by leaps and bounds as they continue to buy and develop land and buildings; The Macon Mayhem Hockey Club will be starting this season; A new waterpark will be open at Memorial Day at Lake Tobosofkee; Plans for a new stadium to lure a minor league baseball team are being completed; Our schools and our children have a bright future as the dawn of a new era begins to unfold with the hiring of Dr. Curtis Jones as Superintendent of Schools; Statewide our children and some adults will be able to use medicinal cannabis thanks to Macon’s State Representative Allen Peake; And all is joyful in Maconville tonight. Over the weekend I had a lot of time to reflect on what has happened in Macon over the past few years and the great things that she has accomplished as my son Teddy and I participated in the 1st Annual Phi Delta Theta 5K run called the Iron Phive for ALS research in honor of Lou Gehrig. As Teddy and I jogged, then walked and ended up virtually crawling through the Mercer campus I began to think how lucky our city has been to have a wonderful and beautiful school like Mercer as our crown jewel. If you have never just walked through the Mercer campus, I highly suggest that one morning you get up and do it. (Then sign up for next years’ Iron Phive!) After your walk through the campus,
hop in the car and go to lunch at a new local restaurant that I hope will become another Macon landmark, Kudzu Seafood. My wife and I have now gone twice and have enjoyed every part of it. The food is wonderful and the service is great! (The fried shrimp are the best I’ve ever had, and if you see my belly, you know that I am somewhat of a food expert.) This little place in the bottom of the newly remodeled Dannenberg Building at Third and Poplar is a simple yet absolutely fantastic dining experience that will give you a great little piece of New Orleans. (If you don’t care for seafood, head over to another new place for eats called “Grow”, formerly “Good to Go”, on Riverside near the bus station, that serves local grown food straight from the farm.) When you get done eating, stroll downtown and look at what our beautiful city was and what it is becoming. There is so much revitalization in downtown right now it’s downright incredible. Not only is Mercer building loft apartments all over town, but so are local business owners like Diana Blair of Blair Furniture. (On another note, I hope someone will buy the old Bibb Theater, remodel it, and begin to show classic movies there.) Slowly but surely, many of the buildings that have been decaying and empty for years are starting to show new life. Macon has such a rich and colorful history which seemed to be nothing but a fond reminisces of a bygone era just a short while ago. Thank goodness that she now has the possibility to have a return to her great and stately ways. I sincerely hope that things continue in this bright and shiny way as Macon-Bibb moves forward and we can forget the past while learning from it by electing forward thinking public officials instead of those who have archaic thoughts and goals.

Where Blight Begins
Among the biggest issues facing this community is blight. Dilapidated homes and commercial buildings are scattered throughout the city, threatening our neighborhoods and hurting our tax base. It is a big problem here, just like in almost every urban area in the nation, and it seems like there is no way out.
This community is prepared to step up with additional funding and a dedicated task force to address the issue of buildings and structures that are the symptoms of years of disinvestment and nature’s destructive forces. But it is important to note that the visual signs of blight are just that, symptoms. Symptoms of other issues such as lack of attention and absentee owners, symptoms of changes in the economy and technology that have changes the way people commute and produce. It starts when someone simply can’t keep up the constant tide of change that faces every city. But one property alone doesn’t cause blight. Blight doesn’t rear its head until one property or one thought gains steam and engulfs a neighborhood and, if not careful, a city. Blight begins when citizens give up. Once blight has taken hold it can take a long time to overcome, but just like blight starting with one property, one lost job, one lost hope, recovery begins when one, just one, person decides it is time for the tide to turn. I get to see this every day in Macon. The urban core of our community, the neighborhoods that made the banks of the Ocmulgee into the beautiful expanse we call home, is filled with individuals who have taken up arms against this sea of troubles. From Mill Hill to Beall’s Hill, from Pleasant Hill to Fort Hill, renovated properties are becoming revitalized neighborhoods.
18 MARCH 27 - APRIL 10, 2015
But the properties are not all that is changing. In these neighborhoods, throughout the urban core, people’s hearts have changed. People really are in this effort wholesale because they love this place and want to see it improve. Just like blight starts in the hearts of those who walk away, recovery begins in the eyes of those with vision. We need everyone in this town to see that we can become the best version of Macon we can be. We can do it by taking care of the fundamentals and areas that are common to us all. We must follow the lead of the blight task force and not only think of blight as a governmental issue, but as an issue that we all have a responsibility for solving, starting by seeing our community through the lens of a city that is and will continue to be on the move, moving towards something better and higher, a city that is becoming better while staying itself. We must see this as a city that can flourish through collective action. Will you step up and help this community move forward? Through the building of the Macon Action Plan and reaction to the One Macon strategy and the marked improvements we have seen in College Hill and downtown show that there is a dedicated collection of Maconites who are taking this community forward, but if we want to solve issues like blight it will take support and action from the many. Can we count you as part of team?

Of his own craft, Harry Crews wrote, “I didn’t know any storytellers who wanted an adjective - Southern or gothic or ethnic - in front of the word novelist. I told them that I was a novelist from the South and that I had no alternative but to write out of the manners of my people.” Jim White, who appeared alongside Crews in Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus, the film that drew its name from his first album, would likely support that statement, if only the word novelist was substituted for songwriter. White is an astute observer of mankind and his place within the chaos it creates, and his music is resonant in any geographical setting, even if he does choose to live in the South. Or perhaps he knows what renowned music historian Bill Malone posits: that all music is inherently Southern music, its influence inescapable, and he has journeyed to find the source. Whatever the case may be, White’s residency in Athens, Georgia eventually led to his path crossing that of the Packway Handle Band. According to press surrounding the release of Take It Like a Man, the pair’s collaborative album, White jumped at a chance to join the band when they asked for his services in producing their new record, having reserved a cache of unreleased bluegrass songs over decades of writing. A partnership between the Packway Handle Band and Jim White immediately makes good sense. They both share the same black humor and lighthearted sarcasm; both draw on those themes that drive critics to employ certain adjectives that mark a region - sin and salvation, heaven and hell, simple, brutal beauty. Often times they transport the characters that occupy those spectral spaces down to earth, where they can perhaps be encountered filling up the RV at the next rest stop or sobering up at a jailhouse in rural Alabama. For the live performance of songs on the record, the group lined up across the front of the stage, Jim White seated on the left, surrounded by various and sundry
instruments and noisemakers. Seeing the Packway Handle Band in that position is a bit odd, as it’s a departure from the single microphone aesthetic that the band usually employs. With that setup, the microphone becomes part of the performance, with band members rotating in and out as their featured parts come and go. With over a decade of performances under their belt, it has evolved into a well-oiled machine, and it’s definitely something to behold. The setup across the front of the stage with Jim White as the sixth man is less intimate, but it is more inviting to an audience and works better on a larger stage. On the songs led by the Packway Handle Band, Jim White functions as all great producers do - he’s able to insert himself into the band’s sound without any obvious intrusion. With White at the helm, Packway Handle Band sounds less like a group of newgrass pickers and more like the type of music John Hartford’s Aereo-Plain Band might be playing were they still around. On the songs written by White, the Packway Handle Band adds their signature touch, bringing new life to several of his songs, including the well-known “Jim 3:16.” The two acts compliment each other well, making the “vs.” that was given to the title of the collaboration seem out of place. To one who isn’t familiar with the back catalog of either act, the pair is so symbiotic that it would be hard to tell where one songwriting credit ends and another begins. That feeling lasted up until the last song of the set, when the show ended as many Packway Handle Band shows do - with the band jumping off the stage to join the audience in a tight circle, shouting with the enthusiasm of a tent revival meeting, the stomping the floor either sending the devil back to hell or knocking on heaven’s door to invite Jesus to the shindig. And Jim White, the smiling Trickster with a washboard, stands on the outer edge of the group, looking like he’s having the time of his life.

36 MARCH 27 - APRIL 10, 2015
On one fateful day in the mid-60’s a group a long hairs pooled their money together for two plates. Mama Louise felt sorry for them and gave them all a heaping helping. A friendship between her and The Allman Brothers Band was born. A friendship that took her on quite a ride that included a seat on the tour bus in 1972 and lifelong friendships with Gregg and the rest of the band. In 2007, Mama Hill passed on, but Mama Louise kept on keepin’ on. She calls us every other day, saying “y’all ready yet! I’m ready to go back to work.” To which we reply, “We’re almost there Mama.”

THURSDAY, APRIL 2 THE DIRTY GUV’NAHS with MOLLY STEVENS @ COX CAPITOL THEATRE
The live experience of The Dirty Guv’nahs has been hailed as one of the best in the southeast and according to Music Connection Magazine, “The Dirty Guv’nahs don’t just play music; they capture the human experience through song.” The Guvs music have had a great year. Their music has been featured on 5 network television programs and they’ve had standout festival appearances at Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, and SXSW, while also opening for a diverse and notable list of major artists including Wilco, The Black Crowes, Train, Zac Brown Band, and NEEDTOBREATHE. Molly Stevens is branching out on her own after spending four years in the Nashville based duo Stevens Layne. Stevens has been living in Nashville for over five years and is making a living playing music all over the country. Her home will always be Macon, Georgia, where she gives credit for shaping her own sound.
LAST HONKY TONK MUSIC SERIES FT. KYLE WILSON @ THE BACKPORCH LOUNGE The Last Honky Tonk Music Series is an acoustic roots music series taking place
on a monthly basis all across the southeast. This unprecedented and historic series was inspired by the legacy of the late Outlaw Country Singer/Songwriter Wayne Mills, who lived his music life to the fullest by always helping his fellow artists at every turn and doing everything in his power to promote live music. Tonight’s concert features live music by Kyle Wilson. Representing traditional Country and Southern Rock Music at it’s best. Born and raised in Alexander City, AL, Kyle has been touring the country spreading his life story through the music he makes. Free cover!
CADILLAC THREE @ THE CRAZY BULL While The Cadillac Three, formally The Cadillac Black, whose members include native Nashvillians Jaren Johnston, Neil Mason and Kelby Ray have been friends and musical co-conspirators since they were kids. They’ve weathered their wild teenage years and even wilder tours, weathered major label letdowns, major league triumphs and a major name change, conquered Music Row – Johnston co-wrote Keith Urban’s #1 single “You Gonna Fly” – and crashed on the couches of strangers in far flung cities. These boys have seen more ups and downs than a Smoky Mountain tour guide.
FRIDAY, APRIL 3 WHISKEY MYERS with DELLA MAE @ COX CAPITOL THEATRE
Free show with college I.D.! Often reduced to a onedimensional stereotype, the kind of music that inspired Whiskey Myers—artists like Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, and Hank Williams, Jr.—is actually multifaceted and inventive, drawing from country, R&B, psychedelic rock, and stringband traditions. In that tradition, Whiskey Myers are grand southern eclectics, pulling in an array of influences and seamlessly mingling them. Listeners can pick up traces of everything from grunge to rockabilly in the course of a set, united by Cannon’s soulfully heart-
felt singing and Brown and Hogg’s solid, supple foundation. Della Mae expands upon the musical achievements of the group’s widely acclaimed, Grammy-nominated 2013 breakthrough album This World Oft Can Be, which established the multi-talented female combo as a potent musical force. Since its formation in 2009, the Boston-bred, Nashville-based outfit has established a reputation as a charismatic, hard-touring live act, building a large and enthusiastic fan base while racking up massive amounts of critical acclaim with its first two albums. SWAIN & THE HIGHWAY SOULS @ TWANG Covering Rock and Roll, blues, and just about everything in between this is definitely a band you are going to dance too.
SATURDAY, APRIL 4 PSYCHO DEVILLES @ TWANG Hot Rod Walt and the Psycho DeVilles was formed in 2002. Hot Rod Walt shares the stage with two talented and loyal musicians......Burford T Ogletree on the Upright bass and Steve “Burnout” Barnett the hard hittin’ punk rock drummer that never runs out of energy. Together the Psycho-DeVilles perform a super high energy show. Singing songs about hot rod cars and mean women...
THURSDAY, APRIL 9 DARYLE SINGLETARY @THE CRAZY BULL Hardcore country traditionalist, Daryle Singletary, has built a career based on musical integrity. “When I moved to Nashville in 1990, I left Georgia telling my Daddy, ‘I want to make my living in country music,’” Daryle recalls. Daryle Singletary earned his notoriety for country authenticity with such unforgettable hits as “I Let Her Lie,” “Too Much Fun,” “Amen Kind of Love” and “The Note.” His newest album, “There’s Still A Little Country Left” , finds the country singer smack dab in the middle of what he loves the most, traditional Country music. 11thHourOnline.com 37
