PUBLISHER’S NOTES

very year it surprises me just how many people respond to our Reader’s Choice Award’s ballot. When we’re young, and I was, not so long ago, we have this theory in our head that our community is like the people that we know. Or that it should be. Though that could be an ideal theory, it is usually not the case. This is definitely true with Macon. While many readers may believe that our publication is mainly distributed downtown, it’s not. Most other areas of Macon have more locations where you can pick up our paper than Downtown has. Now we of course love and support downtown just as much as those ultra skinny stylish people hanging out on the sidewalks. I say that to say this. People you will never know or even hear of pay attention to the 11th Hour. And nothing says that quite like the Reader’s Choice Awards. So when Roasted wins “Best New Restaurant,” or Back City Woods wins “Best New Band” it’s because even people outside of their circles are paying attention and that is a good thing. We like to think this publication plays a big part in that. We get a lot of complaints when nominees come out about a certain band

not being ROCK enough to be nominated or an artist not being ARTSY enough to be nominated. Well, it’s just a reflection of who we are as a city. So if you won, be proud that your word is getting out beyond the people you know, and if you didn’t, consider getting the word out wider for next year. Thanks to all the bands, nominees and presenters that made last night special. I’m writing this before it happens so I don’t know the details yet... Congrats to the winners!

The things making our world just a little bit better | by brad evans

I really liked that I got a call from Mat Weber of 2 Finger Jester fame informing me of a special guest coming to the Reader’s Choice Awards this year. Bobby Dall, the bass player for 80’s phenoms, Poison, had somehow decided to show up. I’m really not sure why, and as of this writing, the show hasn’t happened yet, so who knows what’s up with that. I guess if you got a ticket and were there, you know. Spring is waking up, The Cherry Blossom Festival is about to begin, it’s just the perfect time to celebrate all the things we should be locally proud of. Speaking of, word about a new grocery store on College Street called Ocmulgee Traders has me about as excited as I was when Fresh Market got here. The prices calmed me down

quite quickly in that place, but I think Steve Bell and Co. have something a little different in mind. I can’t wait to see just what it is. As most of you know by now, my father suffers from Alzhiemers. Lately things have gotten pretty rough around the house, and while the family has been through a lot, it did finally get bad enough for my brother and my mother to visit the folks at the Alzhimer’s Association of Central GA. They got me to come in a long time ago, but the resources they offer, and the support they gave my family was invaluable and I appreciate it so much. Karen and Mott, and Linda, thanks Ya’ll. A benefit for the Alzheimer's Association will be coming up in May. The Dancing Stars of Central Georgia will take place May 12th at Macon's City

Auditorium. This popular fundraiser will be comprised of 10 celebrity dancers paired with 10 professional dancers, all raising funds by gaining votes. The dancers then come together to compete in a one night gala dance competition. Here are some of the teams that will be taking the floor: Former First Lady of Georgia Mary Perdue Maconite Terrell Sandefur Community Activist Courtney Swift Actor Jackson Walker & Laura Thomason Macon Attorney Steve Welsh & Pilar Wilder NewsCentral Anchor Portia Lake Karla Redding-Andrews Thanks to all those wonderful people for helping raise money for this cause.

MOVIE NIGHT IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL “COTTON PATCH GOSPEL” JOIN US FOR THIS FREE EVENT

POPCORN & SODAS “Cotton Patch Gospel has been highly acclaimed by critics and the public alike. This award-winning drama is a leg-slappin’, toe’tappin’, hand-clappin’ hoe-down of a story that retells the Gospels of Matthew and John in the musical style of the South. In Cotton Patch Gospel, the far away places of Nazareth, Jerusalem and Bethlehem are brought closer to the cities of Atlanta and Valdosta, and Ty Ty. Jesus is born in Gainesville, Georgia. The music that brings this story to life was written by the late Harry Chapin, author of such classics as Cat’s in the Cradle, Taxi, and other hits. Chapin considered himself “born to write this musical.” (His own words.) The text comes from Clarence Jordan’s “The Cotton Patch Version of the Bible”.

Owners Christyann Gaspar and JJ Hobbs moved to Macon from Tampa and decided to take their already successful online store concept to the streets, and boy are we glad they did. Carrying brands like Patagonia, Chaco, Costa Del Mar and Hurley, along with offering Paddle Board classes and other outdoor gear, this place deserves “Best Local Storefront!”

DOWNTOWN MACON REIGNS AT READERS’ CHOICE AWARDS FAVORITE LUNCH SPOT - BEST WAIT STAFF - BEST BURGER - THE ROOKERY -

BEST NEW RESTAURANT - ROASTED CAFE & LOUNGE Nick Rizkalla, owner of Roasted, opened its doors in October of 2011. “I felt there was a niche to fill in downtown Macon. A place where the music and artistic community could come and chill.” The coffee shop’s First Friday Art shows have been a great success and is a testament to his initial vision. Nick says, “There really is a great bit of artistic talent hiding in Macon!” Serving up organic coffees, freshmade sandwiches and salads and their famous date shake, Roasted has a little something for everyone. Follow on Facebook or Twitter for updates.

OVERALL RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE - THE DOWNTOWN GRILL -

The Rookery has been a downtown fixture since 1976. But when Chad Evans and Wes Griffith took over in 2009, it became an epicenter for Cherry St. With a gourmet list of burgers named after Macon’s notorious, a large craft beer selection and the friendliest waitstaff in town, our readers gave this place the respect it deserves.

Richie Jones and staff has snagged this top award in Macon dining for the second year in a row. With it’s rustic English charm, expansive wine selection and decadent prime cut Black Angus steaks, The Downtown Grill can proudly hang another gold record on their wall. The Downtown Grill is located at 562 Mulberry Street Lane and is located between Mulberry Street and Cherry Street. Reservations are recommended.

Confessions of a Neocon The first time one of Ron Paul's supporters called me a Neocon I was insulted and hacked off which was exactly the response the name caller was looking for. However since then, the more times I have been called that the more enamored to it I have become. Yes....I admit it...I am a Neocon. BILL KNOWLES Active member of the Bibb Republican Party

hank you for labeling me as such, all you napalm spreading Paul-ites who are the self-proclaimed "Defenders of the Faith", "Proclaimers of the Truth" and "The Founding Fathers Favorites". Your name calling has finally produced something meaningful. The American Heritage Dictionary's definition of neoconservativism is "an intellectual and political movement in favor of political, economic, and social conservatism that arose in opposition to the perceived liberalism of the 1960s" and Wordnet 3.0 defines it as "an approach to politics or theology that represents a return to a traditional point of view (in contrast to more liberal or radical schools of thought of the 1960s)". Guilty on both charges. The early Neocons of the Sixties themselves were a radical group indeed. According to James Nuechterlein in an essay titled "The End of Neoconservatism" written in 1996, "Neoconservatives differed with traditional conservatives on a number of issues, of which the

T

MARCH 8 - 23, 2012

three most important, in my view, were the New Deal, civil rights, and the nature of the Communist threat. On the New Deal, neoconservatives wanted not to dismantle the welfare/regulatory state, as did most traditionalists, but simply to prevent its infinite expansion, as in the programs of the Great Society. On civil rights, all neocons were enthusiastic supporters of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965, while the National Review was suspicious of King and opposed to federal legislation forbidding racial discrimination. " Well, I can certainly see how calling someone a Neocon by a Paul supporter might be considered a derogatory term in their thoughts. (See the famous newsletters.) As for the New Deal, there were aspects of it that were despirately needed at the time, such as the creation of the FDIC and the Rural Electrification Association, but I do heartily agree that the Great Society of LBJ was certainly a lot more detrimental to society than the beginning of the entitlements that FDR brought us, which were held largely in check by Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy. In more recent history, Neocons are highly supportive of Israel and opposed to the current

regimes in Iran and Syria, Hezzbollah and the Muslim Brotherhood. Again....Guilty as charged and I am unashamed to say so. Israel has been one of the United States most loyal allies. Why should we not show them the same loyalty that they have shown us? Especially since they are our last allies in the Middle East. Irving Kristol, who's been called the "Godfather of Neocons" and the real father of Bill Kristol who is pictured above with me, wrote in a 2003 article for The Weekly Standard called "The Neoconservative Persuation" that Republicans cannot be "blind to the fact that neoconservative policies, reaching out beyond the traditional political and financial base, have helped make the very idea of political conservatism more acceptable to a majority of American voters. Nor has it passed official notice that it is the neoconservative public policies, not the traditional Republican ones, that result in popular Republican presidencies." The main policies Mr. Kristol wrote about are cutting taxes as well as foreign policy. A Neocon, according to Kristol, feels that the divide between the 'haves and the have nots' lessens when there is economic growth for all, even if that means an increased federal deficit which is a necessary evil if it will help spur the desired economic growth. Kristol continues, "It is a basic assump-

and we can surely expect the rhetoric both for and against this consolidation plan to intensify as the July vote on the referendum draws near. In my view, this consolidation proposal, first and foremost, gives us the opportunity to change the way we currently govern ourselves. According to the proposed legislation, our current two governing bodies totaling twenty-two elected officials would be transformed into one of only ten (a Mayor and nine commissioners). That in and of itself would be a landmark change in the way we, the people, are represented, and how the affairs of the whole are effectively addressed. So while we all may find something of the Devil in the details, the overriding question with which each of us must grapple is whether going forward, consolidation will work toward the overall benefit of our community and Middle Georgia region. EPILOGUE It was President John F. Kennedy who stated, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or the present are certain to miss the future.” We here in Middle Georgia just cannot afford to miss the future anymore, for as our current President, Barak Obama, once stated, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” So let’s now move forward!

tion of neoconservatism that, as a consequence of the spread of affluence among all classes, a property-owning and tax-paying population will, in time, become less vulnerable to egalitarian illusions and demagogic appeals and more sensible about the fundamentals of economic reckoning." In other words, sharing (L) Columnist Bill Knowles the wealth through growth and hard work also means sharing the tax burden throughout society, as opposed to President Obama who just wants to give the "have-nots" what the "haves" have. In foreign policy Kristol wrote that patriotism is "a natural and healthy sentiment and should be encouraged by both private and public institutions", that a world government is a bad idea, that we should be able to tell our friends from our enemies and that we should have military superiority. What novel ideas! Does this sound like the exact opposite of President Obama? It sure does to me. I confess that I am a proud Neocon and I would like to thank all of the Ron Paul supporters who have given me the label that I now completely embrace, although I don't completely embrace everything a traditional Neocon believes. Just do me a favor in the future please? Capitalize the N in Neocon.

URBAN EXPLORER

Delve into Macon’s Nightlife BY SEAN PRITCHARD

E

arlier this week, I was treated to possibly the most unique experience I have been a part of since I moved to Macon in 1998. Brad called me up as I was finishing work and said “Hey man, you need to come to Adams Lounge with me today”. That was all. I vaguely remember reading an article about Adams in the paper years back but I had no idea what to expect. As we were riding out there, Brad kept telling me stories about the place and its history with this area. It turns out that we were going there to celebrate Mr. Charles Adams’ 92nd birthday with his family and friends. The lounge turned out to be way more than I expected. Opened in 1941, and owned by the same family since, they’ve hosted everyone from Little Richard to Otis Redding to Chick Willis and could easily sit at the top of a list of historic American music landmarks. I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous getting into the whole situation, but was treated to a warmer, more respectful reception than any bar or nightclub I’ve visited in Macon. You could sit for days and listen to stories about the musicians and showman that have graced the stage there. Not something you would expect from a tin-roofed, cinderblock building on a back road in Jones County. Thanks to Brad, Andrew, Mr. Lucado, and the entire Adams family for having me be a part of such a historical moment. I am continually astounded by the history of our community. For me personally, March might be the busiest month of the year with all the Cherry Blossom Festival events. For those of you ready to “think pink”, you can update yourself with all the info you need at www.cherryblossom.com. Word around the office is that we’ve event got a brand new iPhone application this year for you to download for free. 2012 marks the 30th year for the festival and what we all hope will be our most successful year yet, so make sure to look into everything that will be going on. The festival runs from March 16th – March 25th. That’s all. On Friday, there are three shows in Downtown that are going to force you to make some decisions. Dirty Guv’nahs and Reluctant Saints will be getting down at the Cox Capitol Theatre while right down the street Roasted is hosting Jon Lindsay, a musician from Charlotte, North Carolina whose sound might be described as “Brian Wilson meets a Moog”. Expect fun, poppy tunes to get you moving. WoolFolk and Lennox, both burgeoning local bands will be playing the show with Jon as well.

If you’re up for a bit of late night action, Death On Two Wheels will be at The Hummingbird with Stonerider from Atlanta. Watch your whiskey, as it will disappear if you leave it around these guys. Make sure to save a bit of money though, because Bragg Jam will be hosting Little Tybee at The Hummingbird as part of their initial 2012 lineup announcement. The Bragg Jam website will be featuring a number of artists for the upcoming concert crawl starting that evening. Little Tybee was recently listed as “#1 Band in Atlanta to Watch” by Paste Magazine. They’ll be joined by friends and tour mates River Whyless from Asheville and Macon’s own sunDollars opens up the show. You should do your best not to miss this one! On Sunday (permitting that they do this again), you should head over to Rookery for their special brunch menu. I was sitting there last week with a group of friends and suddenly a 7-piece New Orleans-style jazz band walks in, sets up and plays throughout most of the afternoon. It, plus Roger’s bloody mary’s, made for one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I’ve had in Macon. Everyone from the church crowd to the waiters was dancing about and it transformed the entire room. You may even just wind up staying the whole day and watching March Madness. Whoabro!, a band comprised of a group of Mercer University students, will be setting up at the Hummingbird that night for a set of originals and covers that range from Phish to My Morning Jacket. I’ve heard a great deal about them since their last show at Roasted so I’m going to check them out. If anything, I’m glad Mercer students are getting involved with the Downtown crowd in that manner. Being cautious of the Ides of March, rest up and head down to Rookery on March 16th. Mag Tard will be taking over the place at 10:00 and playing through songs from their most recent release Did You Mean Mustard? (Google’s suggestion when you search “Mag Tard”). Not familiar with them yet? You can check out their brand new music video for their song “Stayed At Home” on TheBlueIndian.com. Anthony Ennis and James Legrand of Carbon Films did a fine job of it. Like I said, the Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off that night as well, but there will be events going on all around Macon for St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th. If I can get away from work for a second, I’ll probably wind up at the Mercer Village party that College Hill is hosting throughout the entire village. Plus there will be green beer that night at The Bird and Drivin N Cryin will be there with Back City Woods. All in all, that makes for a great weekend. I’ll see you around once March is over and the pollen has settled.

Mother’s Finest @ Cox Capitol Theatre Mother’s Finest has created a sound they describe as a fusion of Funk, Rock, Gospel, R&B Metal and Jazz, taken directly from the street to the stage to the studio, that is Afro-Euro Mosaic Soulful and Electric, transcending musical division, and negative stereotyping. Back in the day, this kind of fusion music was rare to say the least, but the versatility and originality of Mother's Finest, brought down many barriers. Just one of the reasons the band was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2011. Known internationally, they are incomparable, And now after several year's quiet, they're still one of the best LIVE bands on the planet.

Saturday, March 17

Claire Lynch Band @ Douglass Theatre At the forefront of modern bluegrass and folk music since the 1970’s, Lynch has been nominated for three International Bluegrass Music Association awards including Female Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Recorded Event of the Year. She is also a two-time Grammy nominee and past IBMA award winner. Backed by the Claire Lynch Band, comprised of Mark Schatz, Jason Thomas, and Matt Wingate, Lynch s delicate soprano vocals are well complimented by a swing, folk, and country-influenced accompaniment.

Death On Two Wheels makes rock ’n’ roll dangerous again, with slurry-blurry lyrics, half-cocked dreamspeak of portents and regret, and a formidable guitar attack that recalls the nasty duels Allen Collins waged with Gary Rossington before Skynyrd’s final plane ride. Following the same bumpy trail as Kings of Leon, this Atlanta fivesome seems to be in pursuit of darker mysteries on the band’s selfreleased debut.

SATURDAY, MAR 10

Tony Tyler @ Backporch Lounge At the age of seven, Tony took up drums and percussion with his Dad's band, Crossfire. At age twelve, Tony switched to guitar and keyboards, paving the way for the formation of The Tony Tyler Trance, now known as the Tony Tyler Band. In 2001, Tony secured Willie Perkins (road manager for Allman Brothers) as manager. Now he’s a seasoned musician playing across the southeast.

Davin McCoy & Tommy Talton @ Capitol Theatre Tommy Talton is one of the best songwriters and guitarists of our time. Talton has taken the southern music scene by storm in recent years with a new band, and exceptional new music. Talton's music showcases not only his classic slide and guitar work, but his distinctive vocals, and passionate songwriting.

Greensky @ The Capitol Theatre

Little Tybee @ The Bird “Little Tybee is something of a mini orchestra with its ever-evolving five to ten members all engaged in intricate musicianship. Their name comes from a tiny island off the coast of their native Georgia, where legend has it, an undetonated atomic bomb from the 1950s lies missing. They jokingly attribute the quirkiness of their debut album Building a Bomb to the long-term effects of eating radiation-drenched seafood...” -Lavinia Jones Wright, ASCAP

TUESDAY, MAR 13

Caroline Aiken @ Grant’s Lounge Independent to the bone with seven CDs, and with a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk CD in 2006, Caroline Aiken has performed numerous times to benefit thousands of causes, and has played thousands of shows in her 40-plus years of touring at home and abroad. Don’t miss this intimate show in a great, southern rock setting.

FRIDAY, MAR 16

Tanosweg EP Release @ Roasted Spawned from the bands Xavii, GodthePigeon, and The Polygraph Event. A collective of friends gathering solely for the sake of the

Drivin ‘N Cryin @ The Hummingbird communion of the spirits, and apparently to put out a new EP.

Magnificent Bastard @ The Rookery Magnifent Bastard, the Patron Saint of Neighborhood bands have been creating music in Macon for longer than some of their counterparts have been out of Mom’s House. They will be debuting some new music tonight from their recent album.

SATURDAY, MAR 17

Mystery Road @ The Shamrock These guys are masters of emanating their greatest influence, the Allman Brothers Band. They also play some great originals in the same vein, enjoy sing-along classic rock favorites.

THURSDAY, MAR 22

Greensky & Back City Woods @ The Capitol Theatre Greensky played the Fillmore in San Francisco March 9th, now they are gracing our humble Macon stage, pushing the bluegrass boundaries. Don’t miss this show! Greensky is the most progressive contemporary bluegrass bands touring today.

MARCH 8 - 23, 2012

I

n the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland JASON HOWARD wrapped in tarps and buried in a barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later conArrested 4/13/2009 4 Cts Felony Murder firmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team. Only yourselves to blame. For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon Georgia, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
