March passed without me noting that the 11th Hour is going into it’s 13th year here in Macon. Thirteen years! I never thought I’d be doing anything for that long. When Meagan and I started the paper here, we had no money, no loans, and no credit cards to run up. We had a beat up old computer, and one car, and we both beat the streets until we sold enough advertising to print our first issue. The cover story was about the live music scene in Macon, which compared to today, was almost non-existent. To see how the paper has grown over the years, and how the city has grown makes me proud, to say the least. I don’t think anything reflects that like the Readers’ Choice Awards. It used to be hard to come up with nominees for some of those categories. Now so many people get so many votes that we have to have ten or more nominees in some of those same categories. Over 15,000 people voted this year. That’s a lot of people interested in our little publication and more importantly, our town. We are all lucky it’s a town that keeps improving.

“We bring things in that are not from around here. You can’t get anything from our store that you can find somewhere else locally,” said Bush, “We specialize and try to do things that are a little bit different.”

THE VAULT STOREFRONT SPOTLIGHT

High-End Designer Furnishings at Affordable Prices For almost five years, there has been a little furniture store at the corner of Cotton Avenue that holds what some people consider, the most incredible furniture in Macon. It’s a place you can shop and find items that you cannot find anywhere else in town. That place is called: The Vault. A hidden gem right in the middle of downtown Macon. Owners James Bush and Jeffery Hill wanted to offer their customers the luxury of shopping in the higher end stores of Atlanta without having to travel, and for a fraction of the price. “We started out selling antiques,” said owner and interior designer, James Bush, “But now we have found our niche. We sell gently used name brand stuff.” They carry Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, Restoration Hardware, Ethan Allen, Drexel Heritage, and Thomasville. “We scope them out at estate sales and auctions. We hand pick everything.” The store sits at the tip of the triangle at Cotton Ave and Second Street. What was once the old Commercial and Savings Bank, this 1902 building has transformed into a stylish boutique furniture store. Amongst the impressive array of leather couches and industrial dining tables, you can actually see the old teller windows, framed in the original marble. Just behind a row of chairs, you can actually see and enter, the original bank vault- hence the name of the shop. “Sometimes we find specialty items at an estate sale, then we’ll bring them back to the store, and showcase them in the Vault.” For owners Bush and Hill, this store was an answer to the community’s need for affordable, but contemporary furniture. “I sort of did this when the recession and market was down,” said Bush, “This really started out as a side thing. We ended up really helping people by selling their gently used furniture.” Besides helping folks find affordable options, Bush & Hill ended up furnishing a majority of the lofts in town. “It started out with just some of the downtown business people and foot traffic at lunch, then our name got out through referrals; we even get a lot of people from Atlanta. There are a lot of folks moving into the area, and they shop with us. We feel like we are doing our part to bring business to Macon. Especially with all of the lofts… our 08 APRIL 14 - 29, 2015

furniture is really geared toward that style.” Though the shop sells big brand name furniture, the prices are anything but. “We try to have all price points,” said Bush, “We hand pick items. Take an upholstered sofa, the price would start at around $300 and go upwards of $800.” If you are looking for a leather sofa, The Vault will only sell the top grain hide leather, but will sell it at a faction of the price. If you aren’t sure what your style is, James has worked as an interior designer for over 16 years and will put his expertise to work for you. For no additional cost, you can tap into the wisdom of a designer for your home. “We specialize in jotting down what people are looking for. We’ll go out to your home, take measurements, and sort of look around and get a feel for the home. I’ll check out their taste, their style… so when I get things in the store that I know will work, I’ll give them a call and let them come and check it out, without any pressure to buy.” The Vault sells more than just furniture; they also specialize in unique, as well as classic accessories like lamps, rugs, pillows, artwork, and baskets. On display on this particular afternoon, there were several pieces from South Africa, of what looked to be warrior figurines, as well as a hand painted vase. The back wall of the shop showcases rows upon rows of pillows in almost every size. There was even a very large steamer truck standing up vertically, once it was opened, it revealed a secretary complete with cubbies to place office items and openings for your electrical cords. The piece could easily roll around a home and be placed against wall – again, pieces perfect for small spaces. “We bring things in that are not from around here. You can’t get anything from our store that you can find

somewhere else locally,” said Bush, “We specialize and try to do things that are a little bit different. Some of our resources are estate sales and auctions. We tend to scope those out where people may have traveled, served in the military, just really people who may have been all over the world.” If you think gently used furniture means that some of the items are not quality, Bush wants to assure you that they look for the highest quality of items, “We check everything for quality and cleanliness. We try to get things that would rate 8, 9, 10.” Bush says that by selling used items, he is able to reduce the cost significantly, which in turn gives the customer added value. “Say we have something that would retail at $1,200. We would sell it for $500. We try to get things that are half of the retail if we can.” Bush & Hill say that they follow the trends, and also try to keep some classic options. “We follow all of the trends, the designer magazines, and with my knowledge, we are able to purchase just the right items for the store, items that sell quickly.” At their price points, quality furniture sells quickly. Week to week, the store looks completely different with new merchandise coming in and out of the door. Though the space is small, it packs a punch in quality, and they have only just begun. The Vault plans to offer outdoor and patio furniture on their sidewalk. They will continue to seek the highest quality in brand name furniture to sell. “We want people to stop by, check us out, tell us what they are looking for, so we can serve them” With the festivals in town, the owners Bush & Hill hope to get a lot of foot traffic. One way they hope to entice more customers is by offering sidewalk sales. Another way to attract customers is by offering extended hours during First Friday. “We really started out by just opening up on Fridays. Then as we grew, and the business grew, we were able to move over into this space and make it work.” Bush and his business partner had kept their eye out for the current space. They were both intrigued not only by the history of the building, but the location. As soon as the space was available for lease, they grabbed it, and as they say, the rest is history. “We are so proud of our little corner. Cotton Ave and Second Street is really coming alive with retail space.” The Vault does accept cash, check, and credit cards and are willing to work with you on pricing and payment options. They are located directly across the street from Amanda’s Cakery and the Otis Redding Foundation. You can learn more about The Vault by following them on Facebook or calling them at (478) 755-1448. - NICOLE THURSTON

BEST PLACE TO SEE AN ART EXHIBIT MACON ARTS GALLERY It’s easy to see why, why innovative new shows every month, and easy space to get to, and being next to a growler spot, that Macon Arts comes out on top as your art exhibit destination. The hard work of the artists and curator pays off with elegant placement for fantastic pieces.

BEST NEW RESTAURANT IN MACON GINGER STIR-FRY I mean, just because a restaurant has been around for a while doesn’t mean the city has “discovered” it. They just opened up after our Readers Choice Awards last year. Dozens of fresh ingredients and spices cooked in front of your eyes over an open flame, over 500,000 combinations!

FAVORITE LOCAL ARTIST JASON FROST He’s been killing it with his designs, from creating logos and posters for a few of our favorite local events, like Bragg Jam,

BEST MEXICAN CUISINE MARGARITA’S Their menu is extensive and good, their beer collection is one of the best in Macon, and who wouldn’t want to partake in

the sports environment they have their. Get the fish tacos. So good! HOTTEST WAITSTAFF WILD WING CAFE Because hot waitstaff makes the food better. Or is that… MACON’S BEST WAITSTAFF NATALIA’S Proving that service and good food go together, the masses have spoken and they love the quality of service that they get at Natalia’s. Keep up the good work! BEST LUNCH SPOT THE ROOKERY Open longer than most lunch spots with dedicated staff ready to serve good food fast and daily specials that fairly makes the mouth water, it is easy to see why the golden record goes to The Rookery. BEST ETHNIC FOOD THREE COUNTRIES Cubanos, Cuban coffee, carnitas. The people have spoken. BEST BURGER THE ROOKERY The option to get free range, locally sourced beef is what puts these burgers over the edge. The regular burgers are great in their own right, but having the choice is just the beginning. And the choice of toppings are unique and delicious. Worthy of the best burger award. BEST PIZZA INGLESIDE VILLAGE PIZZA Duh! IVP had some good competition, even some who were not nominated, but they proved that their delicious pizza, awesome beer selection, and amazing staff bring the votes to the ‘net. Great pizza is great.

BEST BARBECUE FINCHER’S Their website claims they have had the best pulled pork for 75 years. Macon agrees. So juicy, so succulent, so good. And the burgers should definitely be tried. BEST HOT WINGS WILD WING CAFE Who doesn’t like lots of wings surrounded by large televisions? Macon has spoken and wings must be got at Wild Wings. BEST OVERALL DINING EXPERIENCE DOVETAIL Boy, was that competition stiff. Some of the best restaurants in Macon were on that list and Dovetail climbed right to the top. Of course creative re-imaginings of southern dishes, interesting mixed drinks, and some great wines, liquors, and beers on tap makes this place a great overall restaurant.

AFTER DARK BEST HAPPY HOUR SCENE RIVALRY’S SPORT BAR Great drink prices, good staff, pool, darts… what more do you want in a Happy Hour, especially if that’s also where you find the rest of your friends? BEST PLACE TO DANCE THE CRAZY BULL With the biggest dance floor in the city (at least of current clubs), there is plenty of space to move around when you want to dance. And for those of you who need a little liquid encouragement to shake your groove thang, the bar makes it easy to get in and get back on the dance floor.

FAVORITE COLLEGE HANGOUT BEARFOOT TAVERN Professional and College sports as often as you want, classmates behind the bar, decent food decently priced… all a college student’s dream.

BEST BAR EXPERIENCE THE HUMMINGBIRD STAGE & TAPROOM Happy Hour specials, Monday night’s $1 wells, Wednesday night trivia where you can get your think on while you get your drink on, and music, music, music. Awesome bartenders, dedicated patrons, and yes, overall, the best bar experience. BEST RESTAURANT WITH A BAR SCENE THE ROOKERY They’ve had a hard road with being dedicated to non-smoking, even after food is done being served. But with specials like their Tuesday and Wednesday night Two Hour Tower of Power AKA half priced wells from 10 - 12 on those night, as well as having a great beer selection and knowledgeable, fun bartenders, there’s no reason not to enjoy a meal and then stay afterwards for a drink.

BAR OFF THE BEATEN PATH BACKPORCH LOUNGE Hell yeah, it is! Great prices on drinks, punk and metal shows, a stripper pole for dancing, and karaoke with some of the best characters in Macon. BEST PLACE FOR KARAOKE BACKPORCH LOUNGE And why wouldn’t it? Brandon McGouirk, AKA Stick, runs a smooth karaoke ship. Great song choices (there is more than one Pantera song), the desire to play anything someone could ask for off book, and the encouragement to bring

Guess who just won best bartender in Macon. BEST BARTENDER RYAN SMITH OF DOVETAIL If you see a lanky, young guy with grey hair sitting at the end of the bar drinking a bourbon neat, you’ll think two things: 1) That’s a guy who knows about alcohol and 2) pretty snazzy mustache, dude. Wednesday night is his night. Show up for half priced whiskey tastings and learn more (even a little too much) about your favorite bourbons. FAVORITE LOCAL BOUNCER NICK AT CRAZY BULL That just means you ain’t getting past him without ID and if you cause a ruckus, you will get shut down. He’s pretty popular, that one. BEST PLACE TO SHOOT POOL BJ’S BILLIARDS With nine tables, a beautiful copper top bar, cozy lounge seating and an outdoor patio, BJ’s on MLK Jr. Blvd. has a little something for everyone. 11thHourOnline.com 13

THE MUSIC SCENE FAVORITE COVER BAND MILK MONEY Fronted by Daniel Walker, this band is all up in your cover music business. Regulars at the Hummingbird Stage and Taproom, they play with enough fervor to get the crowds rocking with just a few chords. Don’t miss seeing this band the next time they come through your favorite spot.

know what hit you until you see them on stage. BEST BAND NAME WIDOW PILLS Ten points if you know what a Widow Pill is. This group, filled with long time veterans of the Macon music scene, have a name and a sound you won’t forget. And more than the great music is the personality of the band. They so much fun you’ll find yourself laughing as much as you’re dancing.

FAVORITE SINGER/SONGWRITER TRAVIS DENNING A regular at bars across Middle Georgia, Denning has made a name for himself with his southern tinged hard rock performances. Natively of Warner Robins, Denning made the move to Nashville this year and is poised for big things. This award couldn’t have come at a better time in his career. BEST LOCAL ROCK BAND SUNDOLLARS Whether they bring new life to cover songs or bring their own songs to life right before our eyes, sunDollars know how to rock the stage and hold our attention. The group, never satisfied with what works, find new ways to help you enjoy the songs you love and their original song you’ll grow to love.

Thank you to everyone who voted us “Best New Band 2014” for the 11th Hour awards. Ya’ll sweet. We’ll be taking some time off from shows to finish up our album. After that we’ll be up in ya, 24/7. See you guys in July. BEST NEW BAND OF 2014 MADRE PADRE It’s hard to find a band that rocks harder than Madre Padre. The first time I saw them, I expected more of a pop punk band, but they were so metal, I found myself jumping with the crowd and wishing I had longer hair and knew the words to their songs. Even if this is not really your scene their music will make you a believer! BEST LOCAL EXPERIMENTAL ACT BOOTZ & KATZ These guys are just crazy. I’m glad they won the award. They’ve been rocking out at Roasted for years and finally made it to play the Hummingbird stage. Planted at Mercer University, they were watered and grown in the downtown music scene and, as such, play benefit shows for groups like Veterans Voices so that the grass roots organization could have a way to grow themselves. Thanks for voting me Best #hiphop artist again & voting my album the album of the year! Shouts to Sabir, Jowin & the entire music scene. Call it popular or whatever you want. Imma just keep working & let ppl fill in the blanks. #growthescene BEST HIP HOP ARTIST FLOCO TORRES In a category filled with other great artists, Floco Torres didn’t just accept the award for himself, but for these artists and all the other artists left off the ticket. Macon has an impressive rap scene and we are lucky for the snippets we get as more artists come into prominence. Floco’s win comes right before the release of a new EP, produced with Macon’s Best DJ, called Dreamboard. BEST LOCAL DJ SHAWTY SLIM Macon’s Best DJ goes to Shawty Slim, even though he campaigned pretty hard for DJ Bruce Wonder. Similar to Floco, Slim dedicated his award to the plethora of fantastic DJs holding down the scene even as he travels around the world. ALBUM OF THE YEAR FLOCO TORRES “CHILDHOOD SUMMERS, CELEBRITY DREAMS” The album was about remembering his roots and it’s easy to see why the album would win. FACES OF MACON Arts + Culture + Entertainment

The reason I have come to love Macon as much as I have is because of all the characters I’ve come to know here. I’ve met and been friends with all kinds of people. There are a lot of stories I’ve promised not to write about until some of them are long gone. I’ve known motorcycle stuntmen, moonshiners, judges, gangsters, bank robbers, and one guy who won a snooker tournament with a broomstick just months before he died. I’ve become friendly with a murderer who chopped her husband up into pieces, and I possess the journals of one of America’s Most Wanted criminals who got caught in Macon while he was descending into madness. I thrive on knowing these people, and getting them to talk to me is something I’m exceptionally good at. So when, photographer Ashah Smith and I decided to work together on highlighting some of these people, I was pumped. Our first stop, since Ashah is best known for her work with Beards of Macon, was at Janean Pegasus big old house.

Janean is one of the only bearded ladies I know here in Macon.

Jenean Pegasus The first time I saw Pegasus, not unlike the first time most anyone sees Pegasus, the first thing I noticed were the long whispy hairs, braided, on her chin. I had known a bearded lady before, so my first thought wasn’t that she was too lazy to get rid of it. I knew that she was too defiant to shave. And I knew I liked her. I heard she was a Wiccan. I heard she lived in an old house her family had lived in since the ‘20s and that it was much like they left it. Most of this turned out to be true. But she did put a hot tub in that old house right in the breezeway. Life isn’t worth living without a hot tub, she told me. I happen to agree with that. I don’t have room in the paper to tell her entire story, I wish I did. But the highlights are more interesting than most will ever experience. Pegasus came from a normal family, affluent, straight laced, not unlike many others in Macon. Her great-grandmother was an artist, and even today a painting of a string of flowers she did hangs above a sideboard that she bought herself back in the day. Pegasus says that her greatgrandmother painted another flower on the piece every time she had an argument with her husband. Thinking about that is haunting when you look at it. Pegasus was a normal girl, and her family wanted that to continue. I imagine they pictured her as a debutante, getting married and having kids and living happily ever after. But their vision for her wasn’t to be. After school at Miller, she went to the High Museum to study art. During her freshman year, she took LSD for the first time. “I really did it to help with my art at first. But after that I really tuned in, turned on, and dropped out.” That Timothy Leary philosophy would be something she would carry with her for the rest of her life, much to the dismay of her parents. When she’d bring them a nude painting she did home, they would turn it around and put it in the closet. Their disapproval only served to push her further away. She ended up dropping out of school and diving deeper into the hippie scene of Atlanta, hanging around Peidmont Park, making macramé, and taking LSD. She went to Woodstock, she became a taxi driver in New York City driving people from Harlem to the Village and back. She married three men along the way. “I’ve been divorced, widowed and annulled…after all that I figured, well I’ve done it now” she laughs. Eventually, Pegasus’ family had her committed to an asylum, where she underwent shock therapy. She says it was because they wanted her to forget she was a hippie and remember she was a debutant. “After shock treatment, I couldn’t relate to anything other than 1-2-3 nightynight. But you know after a time, the only thing I could remember for sure was that I was a hippie. I didn’t even know my name but I knew I was a hippie. She cackles as she tells me this.

Pegasus had a son and a daughter along the way. She spent time with the Rainbow Family, a group of like minded hippies that came together after Woodstock. She traveled with the Southwestern Gypsy Tour for a long time, kids in tow. She lived in Golden Gate Park, sold her art to get by, and laughed and loved and let it be like people were doing back then. Eventually her daughter, Josephine Explora would take up a similar lifestyle, following the Grateful Dead. When Josephine was 16-years-old, a Hell’s Angel gave her a car to take a group up to a Jerry Garcia Band show in Oregon. She braked too hard around a corner, and ran into a cliff head on. She didn’t make it. “She was faster than her car.” says Pegasus with a motherly smile across her face. Pegasus’ family rethought their stance on love when Josephine died. She had written them a letter they received just as she died on the highway. In it Josephine had begged them to love her and her mother, for who they were. They honored her wish, and welcomed Pegasus back into their lives as who she was, not who they wanted her to be. “Mama asked me if I thought she was a good parent before she died. I told her if she didn’t count the electroshock therapy then she was, but she knew I was joking,” she says. The beard, Pegasus says, happened during a Saturn Transit, an astrological term for a life event that forces change. Her chin was as fine and hairless as any chin in the world, then hair just started growing. The artist in her loved it almost immediately. “I shaved it once, to appease my mom. We had a Sunday dinner or something when I was in town, and she was always on me to shave. So I did, and she didn’t even notice! Her friends had to tell her that I shaved. From then on I just decided I was going to be myself. People do stare. I walk into some places and all the noise stops. People go get their friends. But that’s what I’m here for, to shock the shit out of people.” In a way Pegasus’ beard has become her art, the shock she always gave her parents she’s passed on to the general public. But her life has settled down. In 2002 she came off the road for good, and moved back into her family’s stately mansion that she’s kept much like it was when they first purchased it in the 1920s. It’s filled with old antiques, beautiful artwork, and of course a lot of hippie swag. Those paintings her parents hated, now hang alongside portraits of her ancestors. There is something interesting in every nook, and she knows all the stories to go along with it. Her hope is to fix up the place, sell it, along with everything inside, and spend the rest of her days in Hawaii, living peacefully, like hippies are supposed to. I hope she gets to do just that. 11thHourOnline.com 17

11th Hour partners with local artists to turn newspaper boxes into public art The 11th Hour is working with 10 local painters, photographers and illustrators to upcycle 10 newspaper boxes into public art in downtown Macon. The completed boxes will be unveiled at the 11th Hour Reader’s Choice Awards on the second Thursday of April this year. 11th Hour Publisher Brad Evans was inspired by local artist Eric Wakefield who hand-painted an 11th Hour newspaper box almost a decade ago. When Evans’ company acquired 50 newspaper boxes, he saw an opportunity to add some color and creativity to the streets of Downtown Macon. “We thought it would be a great idea to partner with local artists, and create some unique boxes for the downtown area,” said Evans. The publication partnered with Macon Arts Alliance, Macon-Bibb County’s local arts agency. The Alliance is the fiscal agent for the project. “Fostering and supporting public art in Macon is a priority for us as the local arts agency,” said Jonathan Harwell-Dye, director of communications at Macon Arts Alliance. “By acting as fiscal agent on this project, we are able to partner with a local business and bring more public art to downtown. It’s a great model for collaboration.” Local artists involved in this project include: Maryann Bates, Craig Burkhalter, Heidi Clinite, Priscilla Esser, Jason Frost, Craig Hamilton, Jonathan Harwell-Dye, Charles Ladson, Eric O’Dell, and Kirk West. Generous funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation supports this project.

11 Things You Didn’t Know About Suzanne 1. My high school years in Birmingham and my college years in Mississippi coincided with the heart-searing events of the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King wrote his Letter from the Birmingham Jail. Peaceful, dignified, young demonstrators were brutalized by police wielding fire hoses and dogs. Four little girls died in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church. The Selma march for voting rights. 2. I was culturally an outsider growing up but have learned to cherish that outsider-ness for its spiritual lessons (humility, empathy) and for the freedom it confers. 3. I have been fortunate to have been involved with some innovative initiatives in Macona group of women who sponsored the first class in Macon to teach natural childbirth (Lamaze), a group who began a support group for breastfeeding mothers which was affiliated with La Leche League International, a group of people which included Betty Aberlin (lady Aberlin of Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood) who launched the Community Children’s Theater, a group which began a parent led cooperative preschool, and an Arts Infusion Program designed to both provide and model academic instruction using artistic disciplines. Suzanne Doonan: The Spirit of an Artist Hometown: Grew up in Birmingham, AL Occupation: Director of Historic Riverside Cemetery Conservancy. I am leaving to pursue freelance writing and teaching. Favorite Restaurant?: Fountain of Juice, I love their soups. Macon’s Best Cultural Asset? Riverside Cemetery. It was designed by Calvert Vaux, who partnered with Frederick Law Olmsted to design Central Park in NYC it is a serene green space enjoyed as a public park It is a repository of history. Trustees of the cemetery have plans for enhancing adjacent areas along Riverside Drive from Ingleside Avenue to College Street, which is a key entry point into College Hill. On a cool-ish day in October, if you’ve been lucky enough to wander into Riverside Cemetery for Spirits in October, you would have seen Suzanne Doonan floating about making sure every spirit, guide, volunteer, and viewer is not only where they need to be but about to have the time of their life. Suzanne Doonan has organized Spirits in October for the Historic Riverside Cemetery Conservancy and during her 7 and a half years span with the group she has started many programs and activities that help put a face to the history of the cemetery. Suzanne was born in Boston and grew up in Birmingham. She went to Mississippi State College for Women majoring in microbiology and sociology. She received a Master’s in counseling from the University of

Southern Mississippi. She moved to Macon in 1971 and lived in an apartment near Mercer’s campus, in the place where the Townsend School of Music now stands. In 1976, she moved to High Street. “There was a revival of the residential historic district spurred by Mercer faculty and other newcomers to Macon,” she said of the move to High Street. “There was a sense of adventure and of commitment to preserving the beautiful housing stock from the nineteenth century. Historic homes were inexpensive and there were low interest loans for restoration. I walked into the spacious double parlors in the house on High Street and had the sense that the spirits of the children who had lived in the house were welcoming my family.” Suzanne’s connections to “the spirits” didn’t stop with her home. When she started working with the Conservancy for the Historic Riverside Cemetery, she not only put a human face to the history of the cemetery for thousands of visitors a year, but she has also put together a curriculum for school age children and created a Master Plan which provides a blueprint for preserving and enhancing both a historic cemetery and cultural landmark but also the environs of this landmarks which is adjacent to Riverside. Spirits in October is truly unique, a program developed and written by Doonan herself, which showcases the lives, values, and times of Macon and its residents. Using letters, announcements, news records, and any historical evidence of the lives that now take up residence in the cemetery, Suzanne crafts an accounting of the dead that gives you a fantastic sense of their life. It’s not just the cemetery that holds her attention. She has an avid interest in theatre, which she discovered thanks to her dramatic arts accomplished children. She has an affinity for writing which she has honed over the

cently raising awareness of what Jessica Walden calls the “hip, historic Riverside Cemetery” That’s at least six things bringing me up to 10. I once wanted to be a medical missionary like Albert Schweitzer 11. As a teenager I wanted to join the Peace Corps and might do so now if it wouldn’t mean leaving my grandchildren for many months.

years in various jobs, including with Riverside Cemetery. She appreciates Macon’s rich cultural heritage - Native American, African, and European but also the vibrant historic centers and all the groups working to revitalize the core. “College Hill Alliance and the Tattnall Square Park Association have shown us many ways in which visual and performing arts and landscape architecture can transform public spaces and thereby build community,” said Doonan. “In addition, Riverside Cemetery’s 150 volunteers have shown how a park-like historic cemetery can be a back drop for history, theatre, music and education. All of these organizations have been hugely supported by the Knight Foundation.” However, the separation of the races, which she sees in neighborhoods, churches, schools, and even cemeteries, and our segregated and depleted public school system is something that Doonan hopes Macon can work on an overcome. Even in these areas, Suzanne feels the arts can be some help. “We can make sure that the arts are incorporated in to the school curriculum. And recognize that the arts are not something a select group of people do professionally,” said Doonan. “Singing, dancing, drumming, drawing, and storytelling are basic forms of human expression which help us to learn, to process experiences, and heal our spirits. Just say yes to enjoying artistic expression! Everyday Maconites can and do advance both arts and education through independent projects.” Doonan plans to pursue some independent writing projects and work in elementary education when she leaves the Conservancy at the end of April. Fortunately, Macon will continue to be favored with her indomitable and artistic spirit. - ANGEL COLLINS 11thHourOnline.com 27

THE INTERVIEW

interview by CLINTON BRANNEN

Arts + Culture + Entertainment

Cole Taylor is an up and coming country music artist who’s currently working towards receiving a record deal. Before moving to Nashville in 2013, he was recognized by the Georgia music industry as the Overall Artist of the Year and Male Artist of the Year at the Georgia Country awards. Over his tenure in the “Music City,” he has received cuts from Chase Rice (Look at My Truck), Florida Georgia Line (Sippin’ On Fire), and Rodney Atkins (Livin’ In It). On March 3, he released his self-titled EP on iTunes, which sold 1,000 copies in the first week. Taylor will headline a show at Capital City in Milledgeville, Georgia, on April 17. CB: How exciting was it to find out “Sippin’ On Fire” would follow “Sun Daze” as Florida Georgia Line’s next single? CT: It was awesome. It was the day before Thanksgiving that Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line called me and told me, “Hey man, this is going to be our next single. Thanks for writing such a good song and letting us cut it.” Being able to go home for Thanksgiving and really be thankful for that kind of thing was a great feeling.

How do you expect the feeling of hearing your own single on the radio will compare to hearing a song of yours cut by another artist? I think anytime you hear your own song on the radio that’s something you had a part of creating is the same feeling. Obviously I don’t know because I haven’t heard myself on the radio yet, but I think it’s going to be around the same feeling. I’ll have the feeling of all the hard work paying off. It’s going to be great.

What is your goal for your fans to get out of the EP? I want them to notice I took my time on the song writing, as well as the sound. I want them to notice the lyrics are there just as much as the sound. It is a newer, fresher sound. That’s what I would love for my fans to hear.

How exciting was the release of your self-titled EP on iTunes? It was great. I had a goal of being in the top ten of the country charts, so to see it go top five and have all of the support I did from my buddies in the country music world, such as Cole Swindell, Florida Georgia Line, and Rodney Atkins, was incredible. It was a great feeling to have the support I had.

Are there any current artists that you look up to and try to model yourself after? With him being from the same part of Georgia as myself, definitely Luke Bryan.

Is there a particular song on your EP that you are most excited about? “See You Around” is probably the biggest one. Everyone is talking about it, and I think it is because so many people can relate to the story in the song.
