y father, when asked these days how he’s doing, will say, “I’m old,” and stare off into the distance. It’s the medication that causes that stare, they say.

His eyes are that crazy blue though, like the water in an abandoned kaolin mine or something, so it’s especially haunting when he just sits there and stares. Just a few years ago, he’d have told you he felt like he was 16 years old and he’d bragg about never smoking a cigarette or drinking a beer and how that contributed to his being so damn healthy, in spite of everyone else getting so damn old.

A lot of good that does him now though.

It was about two years ago now that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and it’s been an awful experience watching it’s progression.

The tunnel keeps getting darker too, which makes it even worse. I fear that he remembers seeing his own mother tied down to the bed with pantyhose in a Bleckley County nursing home. I worry that he’s afraid it will happen to him almost as

much as I worry that it will happen to him, or to me on down the road, for that matter.

When Karen from the Alzheimer’s Association of Central Georgia read my first account of dealing with this disease and tried to get me to come in, I didn’t go. I didn’t really feel like talking about it with someone I didn’t know, and how talking about it would help anyone, but me. Eventually, though, she won me over, and I sat in her office for an hour spilling my guts about what our family is going through.

It was strangely comforting, maybe because she’d seen most of what I was describing before, and had answers for how to deal with it.

They’ve even reached out to my mother since, which means more to me than they will ever know. On Thursday, May 5 they are bringing in Vince Gill, who’s own family has dealt with Alzheimer’s, to the Macon City Auditorium. Their biggest fundraiser of the year, I encourage all of you to buy a ticket and donate to this cause.

A MUSICAL CELEBRATION IN HONOR OF LEGENDARY ALLMAN BROTHERS ROADIE “RED DOG”

The friends and family of Joseph “Red Dog” Campbell are hosting a musical memorial weekend to honor and celebrate his life. On Friday, April 22, at the Cox Capitol Theatre, there will be a ceremony honoring Red Dog’s Marine Corps service followed by a night of music in tribute to his life-long passion for music and his selfless contribution and service to the The Allman Brothers Band. On Saturday, April 23 the tribute will continue at The Big House Museum with an afternoon of more music and a special evening concert by Col. Bruce Hampton (pictured). Entry to The Big House Museum on Saturday is $10, however, presenting your ticket stub from the concert at the Cox Capitol Theatre on Friday will give you free admission until 5 pm, and $10 admission after for the evening concert.

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist J.R. Moehringer's The Tender Bar is worth a read. The book centers around being brought up in a neighborhood bar by a bunch of regulars in his hometown of Manhasset, Long Island. Not only does it signify the importance of a good tavern, but also the men that occupy them. I’ve also been reading 1776 by David McCullough, which is pretty amazing. I had no idea we were such a rag tag bunch when we defeated the British and won our Independence.

The Georgia State Fair is operated by the Exchange Club of Macon, in which all of their proceeds go to middle Georgia charities. 2011 festivites kick-off April 30th at 8am with a 5k road race, and the fair gates open at noon. Don’t miss the Kinchafoonee Cowboys in concert at 4pm.

This is the fair’s first year to be held in the spring and it’s 151st event. Week long festivites for the whole family include a clown circus, ultimate dog show, family-friendly concerts and of course, rides and games galore. Some highlights of the week include:

Magazine. Speaking of Outside magazine, we hosted Alex Carver in our home this past weekend.

He’s been a travel writer for Outside, The New York Times and now he was in Macon, GA on behalf of Southern Living, doing a piece on local juke joint, Adam’s Lounge, opened in 1947, my favorite bar in the world. We also hit the Midtown Key Club, who’s lights kept going out every sixteen seconds. It got crazy.

When reality television first hit the airwaves I thought it was stupid. And I believe a lot of it still is. I’ve never watched American Idol or Survivor or Dancing with the Stars or The Bachelor. But I can’t get enough of shows like Swamp People, Son’s of Guns, American Pickers, Shark Men, Ax Men and the like. Maybe I’m just eaten up with manly but these shows show a different side to the kind of people I appreciate most of all.

Beans! Farm CSA now accepting signups for spring crop

heir goal is to provide the community with fresh produce while earning enough to sustain their families, so friends, Kim Kelly and Kimberly Bass, found an acre of land to rent way out in the boondocks and began to work the land. A year later, while only one of them can sustain her family through the farm, the demand for local grown organic produce is growing exponentially and the two farmers find themselves looking for five acres in order to grow their CSA (Community Sustained Agriculture).

With the guidance of D&A Farm owner Steve Dentoski, Kelly, who has worked on Pennsylvania farms since the age of 12, learned how to farm in Georgia. Meanwhile, Bass’s knowledge of growing herbs and flowers compliments Kelly’s expertise. “We try to confuse the bugs,” Bass said. “By planting cucumbers amid other ‘smelly’ plants (like marigolds), the bugs can’t find or eat up our crop.”

It’s a family endeavor that allows Kelly’s young son to learn alongside Bass’s school aged boy how to care for the plants and it encourages them to eat healthy. As they pulled new potatoes from the ground, the women were excited to have the boys eat the raw produce. Each boy hesitantly took a bite and grimaced at the texture and taste. They understand the importance of trying new things even if they end up disliking the taste.

“I’ve always been interested in organic food,” Kelly said. “It’s important to provide my son diverse vegetables and foods.” And she wants to help the community learn to eat healthy, too.

Beans!Farm offers produce to the community via two channels: CSA and local farmers markets. Over the last twenty years, CSAs have grown in popularity allowing consumers to buy local, seasonal food from a local farmer.

Members sign up with Beans!Farm to receive weekly boxes of vegetables and other products. For 10 weeks of varied produce, the member pays $200 up front and receives $20 worth of produce each week. On a set day, time and location, customers stop by to pick up their goodies, often finding a surprise or two among their expected products.

The spring boxes include greens, sprouts, onions, baby potatoes, carrots, radishes and more. Later in the season, they plan to include tomatoes, green peppers, squash and blueberries. Each week, one food item is included among the produce: wheat bread, jellies, jams, honey and perhaps even cupcakes from a local baker.

There are only a few spaces left for the spring produce CSA and customers are taken on a first come, first served basis. Sign-ups are also being accepted for the next 10 week session of the CSA. Interested customers can sign up by visiting the website at www.beansfarm.org.

CSA hopefuls, who do not make the sign-up before it is closed for the spring session, are not totally out of luck.

According to this duo, the demand for locally grown produce is greater than the number of farmers who participate and customers should be aware that not all farmers markets are equal. “We only participate in markets that limit vendors to those who grow their own produce.

While other markets allow vendors to come from other states to sell their produce, we prefer to participate in markets that provide consumers the freshest produce possible,” Kelly said. ”Beans!Farm produce can be found at Mulberry Street Farmers Market, on Wednesday evenings, and at Wesleyan Market, the 2nd Saturday of each month (except during the winter). They also participate in the International City’s Farmers Market in Warner Robins on Thursdays from 2 – 6 p.m.

TWO-DAY MACON EARTH DAY CELEBRATION SATURDAY, APRIL 23 PIC GREEN FIELD DAY OFFERS FREE GREEN ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES Historic Macon will host the second annual Preservation Is Conservation (PIC) Green Field Day Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Central City Park to give Middle Georgians a chance to learn how to reduce their carbon footprint and save money in the process.

Vendors will display green products and ideas. Local produce will be for sale by local farmers. Recyclable art activities will be offered for children and they can also pot their own plants at a potting shed. where children can pot their own plants, music and food.

PIC Green visitors are invited to bring a plant from their yard or garden to swap for another plant at a booth manned by area master gardeners. The Ocmulgee National Monument will give away trees at its booth.

Riverside Ford will display hybrid cars.

Macon artist and designer Mark Ballard will emcee the PIC Green event and judge a “green” egg decorating contest for children and adults in four age categories. He will also present egg and other decorating tips. Music and food will also be available during the day.

Speakers and demonstrations on gardening will be offered from 10:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. City of Macon Forester Randell Hunt will demonstrate the correct way to plant a tree. Mercer University Associate Professor of Biology Heather Bowman-Cutway will speak about backyard composting; Karol Kelly, Bibb County Extension agent, will discuss raised bed gardening.

PIC Green is part of Macon Earth Day activities Friday and Saturday, April 22 and 23 planned by 13 Middle Georgia organizations to draw attention to conservation and concern for the environment.The organizations include Macon-Bibb County Parks and Recreation

Department, Macon Tree Commission, Bibb County Cooperative Extension Service, NewTown Macon, Historic Macon Foundation, Middle Georgia Clean Cities Coalition, Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful, Boys and Girls Club of Central Georgia, Middle Georgia Clean Air Coalition, the Ocmulgee National Monument, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, Macon Film Festival and the College Hill Alliance.

“All of these organizations hope partnering will help increase awareness for green initiatives,” said Historic Macon Foundation Executive Director Josh Rogers.

“Macon’s future is dependent on our citizens getting serious about sustainability,” Rogers said. “It is our responsibility to preserve the environment and community we love so that we can in turn share it with future generations.”

Middle Georgia Clean Air Coalition and Middle Georgia Clean Cities Coalition will host the official kickoff Friday, April 22 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Ocmulgee National Monument, where there will be free tree giveaways and offer tours at the free event. Parks and Rec also will host an “Earth Day Fitness Walk and Talk” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday at Gateway Park, Otis Redding entrance. It will include a community walk along the river, health and wellness checks, nutrition tips and a bike vendor giving cycling tips.

The Athens boys kick off the opening of the Spring debut of the Georgia State Fair at 4pm. The Kinchafoonee Cowboys have released four studio albums. The first, Sowega, was recorded in Athens, GA in 1991 at Saturn Recording Studio. (These first two albums are now sold together as a compilation called 1991-1994). Their third "selftitled" album, Kinchafoonee, was recorded at Maxwell Sound in Athens, GA in 1998. In 2001, Sic 'em Dawgs was released as a single. Cowboy Ways: Live at the Georgia Theatre 2005 is their latest release. It has been receiving extremely high praise from old and new fans alike. don't think I've ever been as worn out as I was by the time Sunday came around.

Last week was one of the most amazing weeks I've had since I moved to Macon 12 years ago, so a sincere thanks to everyone who made that happen. Fortunately for all of us, things aren't slowing down these next two weeks so pay attention. You can bet that I'll be at the Cox Capitol Friday night for the Red Dog Memorial Concert to pay respects to Clark and his family and honor a true Maconite. Saturday night we'll see the return of Hummingbird's Big Bird Bash.

Last time it was 10+ bands, drink specials, and meat-on-a-stick from the fine people at Lemongrass and from what I've heard its going to be better. Bands start playing at noon, so call in sick to work and get downtown for the good times. Gringo Grande and MagTard are among a slew of other bands and solo artists. A few blocks up the street at the Cox Capitol the folks at Bragg Jam Presents are hosting Atlanta "supergroup" The Constellations and one of Macon's favorite touring acts, All Get Out for a night of raucous and southern psychedelic sounds. Either way, these are two shows that I've been very excited about for a long time. If you really want to get in on the action, just buy tickets to both and walk back and forth all night.

of too many better ways to spend my money. Rest up Sunday, shake off your hangovers and wash the cigarette smell out of your clothes (seems like it won't be around too much longer) then head down to Rookery for their weekly jam sessions. (It's free). On the following Monday one of the loudest bands I have ever heard in Macon will be playing what is possibly Macon's smallest venue. Noiserock band Redemer (Chicago) invades the Golden Bough alongside Art Pinsof and Teaadora.

Redemer was captivating to say the least last time I saw them. If you've haven't made it to the bookstore for one of Macon Noise's shows, get your life together and be there at 10pm. Bring earplugs. Wrap up your week by heading up to Atlanta to support Macon's finest musicians at 500 Songs for Kids at Smith's Bar. Oh Dorian, Jubee and the Morning After, Floco Torres, and Back City Woods will all be playing songs. Things start April 28th and continue every night until May 7th.

Check out all the other artists playing this show as it's the biggest music charity in Georgia! My best advice for the curious Maconite is to simply get out and explore. Head down to Cherry St. Cycles and pick up a bike and go!

You are filming Breaking Dawn right now correct?

I know there has been some big leaks on the Internet, but how’s it going? What can you tell us? Man, filming has been going great. We’re sort of in a holding pattern seeing if we will need to do re-shoots and what not right now.

Nobody really knows what’s going on. But the movie is going to be incredible man. Lots of action, lots of romance and lots of drama. That defines the series.

I know this isn’t your department, but any word on the rating of the movie. I know the book had some questionable scenes, or at least that’s the word on the internet.

I think it's everyone’s intention to keep it at least PG-13. I mean, we have to think about our audience. A great deal of those aren’t 18 yet. I’m sure it was a challenge but I think that’s everyone’s intention.

Tell us about getting the call to become a part of this series. I know you have been acting for a long time before Twilight, but it had to be quite a feeling? Unbelievable. I got the call while I was eating lunch and I almost lost it. It’s just an incredible thing to be a part of something so huge, not just for my career, but for the experiences I get to have on set. It’s just been great from day one.

How did you get involved with Abby’s Dream, The charity you are coming to visit in Macon.

We always try to help out whenever we can.

Anyone can get lung cancer. And Abby’s cause is just the kind of thing we wanted to help out with.

So we agreed to come out to raise awareness and everything for her. I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone down there!

Abby’s Dream Walk will be held April 30th at Tattnall Academy, 9am-1pm. A SMOKING BAN By agreeing to be one of the sponsors of our local legislation, I was adamant that we be reasonable in not trampling the legal rights of those who choose to smoke. More importantly, to not damage our downtown.

obacco kills more Americans each year than alcohol, cocaine, crack, homicide, car accidents, fires and AIDS combined.

In fact, every year tobacco kills more than 10,000 Georgians – 12,000 each day nationally and greater than one every hour of every day in Georgia - and drains almost two billion dollars from our Georgia economy in health care expenditures. Tobacco is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the United States - more than obesity, poor diet, and lack of physical activity. Since cigarette smoking is responsible for one out of every five deaths, isn’t it logical to do something to address such a devastating influence on us all?

Recently City Council took up the challenge to join Savannah and Athens, as well as many cities across America, in limiting smoking to areas that adversely affect only the smoker and no one else. As far as I am concerned, anyone has the right to smoke knowing that it is going to kill him, but he can’t take me or my family with him to the cemetery. My mother died of lung cancer and she never smoked even one cigarette in her life. For the record, my father didn’t smoke either and I have continued their practice. When I travel either domestically or abroad, I always choose a Marriott hotel because they are all smoke-free. In fact, their business surged when they made that decision.

Locally, when the new owners of The Rookery

changed it to a non-smoking venue, they had the same uptick in business and are very pleased with their decision.

Perhaps when Brown & Williamson employed so many local residents, it would have been unthinkable to introduce anti-smoking legislation but they left the area (taking millions of dollars in tax breaks with them).

Recently, however, the Survey Research Center at the University of Georgia found that 70.2% of Bibb County residents favor a law prohibiting smoking in all public places with specific guidelines for allowing smoking around establishments serving the public. Perhaps more surprising, 80% of local residents feel that smoking should never be allowed in restaurants and 77% feel that smoking should never be allowed indoors at workplaces. I expect that, if the respondents knew that Georgians pay $537 million every year in Medicaid payments related to tobacco-related illness, those numbers might have been even higher since non-smokers heavily subsidize the health costs of smokers.

That doesn’t include the indirect costs due to missed work and reduced productivity estimated at over $3 billion per year.

Although the number of smokers has declined, almost one in five people still smokes, including one in five high school students, most of whom will continue smoking into adulthood.

Seventy percent of adult smokers began before the age of 18. One half of all smokers, especially those who start as teens, can expect to die from tobacco use.

By agreeing to be one of the sponsors of our local legislation, I was adamant that we be

reasonable in not trampling the legal rights of those who choose to smoke. More importantly, I did not want to damage our downtown businesses who already have enough trouble just trying to stay open and pay their hard-earned wages and taxes. The new legislation first stated that outdoor smoking areas must be at least ten feet from the front door of the restaurant. For several restaurants that have only a few tables, that would have been impossible.

While no one wants to enter a restaurant by wading through a cloud of smoke, we must take the owners’ space constraints into consideration. So the amended language says “ten feet or a reasonable distance.” Since most businesses will want to accommodate their customers, I am confident they are the ones best-suited to make a determination of reasonableness.

There are also exemptions carved out for smokers who live in nursing homes.

After all, they are paying for their “residence” and thus should be free to make their own decisions about what can happen there.

Another exemption was made for specialty smoking shops. If you are going into one, chances are you are already unconcerned with second-hand smoke. It seems ridiculous that you shouldn’t be able to sample a tobacco if you are going to buy it. Of course the shop must be properly ventilated if it adjoins another business.

Perhaps the most difficult point of contention is the specially-designated and wellventilated smoking room in a business or factory. Non-smokers don’t want to walk

through it and certainly don’t want to work in it. Some proponents insist that an employees’ smoking room should not even be provided since a non-smoking ban should be a total one. I do not agree. I fear we are already treading dangerously close to personal property rights and I don’t want to step over that thin line. While I would not want to be required to hold a meeting or speak to my supervisor in a smoking room, I think the employer should be allowed to designate a smoking room so long as a non-smoking employee is not required to work in it.

Businesses in the City have every reason not to want this new legislation to drive their customers into the County.

Evidently the Bibb County commissioners will consider a similar smoking ban after City Council has passed ours, thus creating a level playing field.

In a 9-6 vote in favor of the smoking ban, Macon City Council passed the ordinance April 19th. The rules will go in to effect on September 1, 2011.

ur good old friend and local enemy of common sense State Senator Robert Brown is at it again…but this time the stakes are higher for citizens of Macon and of Bibb County. In case you haven’t been watching the news lately or following the consolidation saga, let me fill you in on a few items that are slipping under the radar.

For all intents and purposes over the last few weeks, Senator Brown has appeared to be a beacon of clarity and poster child for unity as he and State Senator Cecil Staton released their plan for the consolidation of Macon and Bibb County. Over the ranting of State Representative David Lucas, who proclaimed it dead, Brown continued to try to push his bill through the legislature up to the last minute.

State Representative Allen Peake, the author of the original consolidation bill, proposed a delay until the next session so that more time could be allowed for public review. Clearer heads prevailed, and the bill will be taken up again in the next session, much to the chagrin of the Senator Brown, the Don of the Cotton Avenue Mafia. Why was Solon Brown so

determined to get this passed quickly? In a word: power.

There is no question in my mind now that Robert Brown will be running for Mayor of Macon. Brown’s proposals, which by the way he has stated are non-negotiable, prove my point. Brown will not compromise on nonpartisan elections and a salary for the new countywide mayor. Let’s look at each point.

If the Brown-Staton plan goes into effect, partisan elections will continue to be the norm in Bibb County and in Macon. This is a major concern to Senator Brown as candidates will no longer be labeled as a Democrat or a Republican. In other words, Senator Brown wouldn’t be able to demonize a Republican and beatify a Democrat. Whoops! There goes his power….More like Pop Goes the Weasel.

Do you think it might help if someone actually is able to run against Elaine Lucas and not be burdened by a Republican label? Primary elections would be a thing of the past, and we could all focus on what is most important: Creating a better place to live.

Second, Senator Brown wants the new mayor to garner a salary of $150,000, while Representative Peake’s plan calls for a salary of $105,000. Which is more responsible? Which is more realistic in a time of economic turmoil?

And why would Senator Brown want this larger salary? Another one word answer: Greed.

As I said on The Kenny B-Charles E. Show last week the only reason that Senator Brown wants this is to line his own pockets in the future. Let me digress for a minute…

A few weeks ago, Kenny Burgamy asked me to co-host his show with him while Charles Richardson went on assignment to China. I was happy to do it and had a great time! But right in the middle of the first segment, we got an unexpected visit from our buddy, Senator Brown. Kenny, being the all around good guy that he is, let the Senator do what amounted to a fifteen minute commercial for the BrownStaton consolidation plan as well as free airtime for the yet to be announced Brown for Mayor campaign. Not to be outdone after Brown had taken his leave; Clarence Jack Hakeem Abdul-Jabbar Ellis called in to talk up his plan to corrupt city government again. It was a fun time had by all! Now back to the story… (By the way, I did shake Senator Brown’s hand and was cordial. I know it’s hard to believe.)

The bottom line is this: Senator Brown is making a power play to become the first ‘Head Potentate of Bibb County’. Not only has he pushed for the two main provisions of his bill,

but also wants increased power for the countywide mayor who also has no term limit, along with a countywide sheriff AND police chief.

Adding to this the pay raise for the mayor, doesn’t this seem as though Senator Brown is not only setting the table for himself to become the ‘Head Honcho of Bibb County’, but the ‘Monarch of Mulberry’, the ‘Farouk of Fort Hill’, the ‘Pope of Poplar Street’, the ‘Baron of Bass Road’, the ‘Pasha of Pio Nono’ and all points in between for LIFE. I hope that in the coming election, should Brown decide to run, that the people of Macon can see through this charade for what it is and vote smart for the future of Bibb County. If you must, return him to the State Senate where he has become a benign cancer on our community, but for God’s sake, don’t elect him mayor.

Keep in mind the dominoes that will fall if he is elected mayor. David Lucas will run for Brown’s spot in the Senate and Elaine will run for her husband’s spot in the State House, though she says she will run for the Bibb County Board of Education after her last term on City Council. God help our children if that happens. We must as a community band together to get the Trio of Terror out of our government and not give them all promotions.

It’s up to you.

I just moved and noticed some of my neighbors have blue recycling containers. I called the city of Macon, and after three transfers, was told there weren't any more available, but that I would be put on a waiting list. What exactly is the deal with the curbside recycling program here?

The landfill is filling up. Global warming’s warming up. Next December, the Mayans will send spaceships to end the world. How environmentally responsible do you feel like being? The long and short of it is that the burden of recycling is on you.

Unless you live in the right part of Shirley Hills, Wimbish Woods, InTown or Vineville—all chosen because they had the highest rates of participation when curbside recycling was citywide. Last summer, the pilot program for singlestream recycling, which allows you to throw all your recyclables in a big, blue, roll-away cart, expanded to 2,000 homes.

The rest of the city only gets little blue bins to recycle newspapers, like anybody reads those anymore.

(Council is considering a resolution to set aside money in 2012 to buy 3000 garbage carts and 500 lids for residents who need them. Don’t know yet if that’d include the single-stream carts.)

If you have a blue 65-gallon rollaway cart, you’re in the program. If not, and you still want to do your part for Mother Earth, you’re going to have to take them down to Seventh Street where Macon Iron takes household recyclables, Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 5pm, and on Saturdays until noon. This is my question because I see some good ideas in both Rep. Allen Peake’s and Sen. Robert Brown’s respective consolidation plans that don’t HAVE to wait.

Specifically those addressing problems we have when it comes to electing folks.

Problem #1: Electing too many.

Between the City of Macon, Bibb County, Macon Water Authority and Bibb County Board of Education, we elect 34 people to local office. Sixteen of those are just for Macon, which has lost about 15,000 people since 1991. Each ward—we have five—has about 18,000 people, so another way to look at it is that we’ve lost almost an entire ward.

Both consolidation plans propose dropping the total number of local officials. Let’s practice with Macon City Council, cut out some of the work when consolidation comes: nine would be awe-

some, but I’d be happy with 11.

Problem #2: We need term limits. A mayor can only stay in office for two consecutive four-year terms. Just like the President. Why not do the same thing with City Council? C. Jack Ellis is proving you can come back to run again. Council members Elaine Lucas and Lonnie Miley, who both represent East Macon where I live, served for a while and came back later to serve again. Term limits force us to get new blood.

Problem #3: End the partisan local elections. We’re the only city in the state that has them. Peake wants to put an end to them. Brown does not. Even Jack Ellis, when he was mayor, tried to stop them and he was right: they’re a waste of time and taxpayer money. But how much?

Bibb Elections Supervisor Elaine Carr estimates that in an election year like this year, with no Presidential or Gubernatorial vote on the ballot, the partisan primary costs us approximately $50,000. That’s just to vote on who from the city will represent the Democrats and Republicans in November. That vote in November this year will cost us about $40,000 and it won’t tell us much we don’t know in July because the city rarely has a strong Democrat and Republican candidate opposing each other.

Hell, there are seats on our enormous City Council that routinely go unchallenged. In 2007, Lonnie Miley, James Timley, Alveno Ross (who moved to Augusta and was replaced by Henry Ficklin in a special election), Charles Jones and all of Ward 5: Lauren Benedict, Nancy White and Erick Erickson (who moved out of his district and was replaced

by Beverly Blake without a special election) all ran without opposition. That’s almost HALF of the current City Council.

When Ellis tried to get rid of the partisan primaries, Rep. David Lucas said, “nonpartisan elections have never been anything but a Republican scheme to get more Republicans elected." Not sure how that works exactly, but if you flip the logic, partisan elections have never been anything but a Democratic Party scheme to get more Democrats elected. Rep. Lucas and his wife, Councilwoman Elaine Lucas, are Democrats.

Aside from playing politics with your opposition, how can you justify keeping it this way? Like it or not, Democrats and Republicans live here alongside Libertarians and an array of independents.

Ultimately we all want one thing: for Macon to thrive. That doesn’t happen when one side tries to keep the other down.

We’ve indoctrinated our students to see only what’s right in front of them, and to only see it for as long as necessary — then wipe the slate clean. They can do the math of the immediate moment — number-tweaking today, profit tomorrow — but not the long-term cost. Not in dollars, not in morals, not in common sense. And we have only ourselves to blame.

Chris Hedges’ excellent Truthdig.com piece “Why The United States is Destroying Its Educational System” explains it much better than I can. Here is what he says about American schooling: “It prizes test scores above critical thinking and literacy. It celebrates rote vocational training and the singular, amoral skill of making money. It churns out stunted human products, lacking the capacity and vocabulary to challenge the assumptions and structures of the corporate state. It funnels them into a caste system of drones and systems managers. It transforms a democratic state into a feudal system of corporate masters and serfs.”

formance on test scores, and is proposing even more frequent testing to measure the “value-added” worth of teachers.

I recognize this for the pandering duality it is. But I’m guessing many of today’s citizens would not. Nobody taught them how.

Somebody — and in my mind, that somebody should be President Obama himself — should wander down to the Department of Ed and ask Arne Duncan what the heck he’s up to.

There are lots of things broken institution-wise in our America — our prison system, our health-care organizations, our political structure. But every scrap of change must begin in the classroom. This is where a citizen learns to question, to think, to risk, to be wrong, to self-correct, to challenge and to grow intellectually. This is where we inherit our civic responsibility as informed rabblerousers, just like our founders, who believed mightily in such. . This week millions of children are getting their first lesson in political submission to an institutional mindset. It’s wrong, it’s wasteful, it’s counterproductive, but most of all, it’s Un-American. Bubble tests are unpatriotic, as insulting to our democratic ideals as monarchy rule. And it’s time we gave them the same heave-ho we gave King George back in 1776.

It’s an American public school springtime rite of passage — the CRCT. The official memos float home on pastel paper. Get a good night’s sleep, they say. Eat breakfast. Be on time.

But there’s a shrill note of desperation under the words — that‘s because standardized tests are the bread and butter of an American education. Students, teachers, even entire school systems are judged by these numbers, which tell us . . . what exactly?

President Obama explained the problem in a recent series of town meetings: "One thing I never want to see happen,” he said, “is schools that are just teaching the test because then you're not learning about the world, you're not learning about different cultures, you're not learning about science, you're not learning about math. All you're learning about is how to fill out a little bubble on an exam and little tricks that you need to do in order to take a test and that's not going to make education interesting."

It doesn’t even make education educational, something I saw over and over in my freshmen composition classes. Writing proficiency does not easily translate to bubble-test

evaluations because it‘s not a discrete measurable process, like stamping Grade A Large on an egg. Neither is critical thinking or information literacy or contextual understanding, all important requirements of being an educated person, all of which get short shrift is a bubble-test world.

The students of mine who had the most difficulty with writing were the ones who expected bubble-test knowledge to get them through. They were desperate for me to give them a set of facts to memorize, a set of procedures to follow, a set of steps that would take them unerringly from blank page to finished A+ product. And I could not do it. No teacher can, and no teacher should be forced to try.

A former colleague of mine reported recently that college-age students are often daunted by the prospect of reading and understanding a book-length work (and he wasn’t talking War and Peace either). It wasn’t that they couldn’t read a longer work; their problem was that a book is too big to memorize. They couldn’t hold that much factual information in their heads at one time.

Trained year after year in the memorize-andregurgitate process that produces better test scores, these college learners had no ability for “big picture” learning.

theSCENE THE RETURN OF THE DJ

ears ago, before Satan and the Rothschild Family collaborated to create Ke$ha and Wakka Flakka Flame, the radio was a source of music that varied in genre and tempo. Sam Cooke and other artists laid their soul-soothing rhythms down on wax and radio DJs kept the music leaking out of speakers until wee hours of the morning. Sadly, this is no longer the case; in the day and age we live in the DJ has become little more than a top-40 spewing human jukebox with no character in his or her delivery.

Similarly one has to be careful when getting down so as to never be caught in the hi-hat laden crossfire of these evil-doers.

As discussed in the last issue, the scene in which we live is dictated by parties rather than days of the week. The next step in this is getting to know your DJ. This doesn’t mean show up at Shawty Slim’s house with a six pack and the first season of Grey’s Anatomy on DVD. Quality time with a DJ is best spent checking out his or her Soundcloud profile and determining for yourself whether or not their set is getdownable for you. Music, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder…or ear, or something. Get familiar with local DJs, Downtown Macon has the luck of having a pretty impressive roster bestowed on us by the gods of BPMs. Being a DJ is a job, and that job is to keep the party going. True DJs hearken back to an era when drink specials were not the crux of nightlife. A DJ set should be impressive, and at the very least carry the mood and collective consciousness of the room in which it is being spun. Thankfully a renaissance of sorts has brought back the divine science and

art of turntablism to Downtown Macon. So who are the DJs to listen to in Macon?

First off, let’s get down to brass tacks; the greatest DJ to ever walk Cherry Street is Roger Riddle. Rumor has it he was wasn’t born like a normal human being, but that his father was a Technics 1200 turntable and his mother was a Roland TR-808 drum machine.

While this is yet to be confirmed, the elusive Riddle exhibits a power most DJs only dream of. Appearing at random places to rock unsuspecting party people with dope beats, the infamous Roger Riddle then steals away into the night in a cloud of mystery like a funky fresh ninja.

Certainly less elusive, the rest of the Downtown DJs form a Voltron-like who’s who of masters of the wheels of steel. The forerunners of the current dance scene in Downtown Macon are DJ’s Old Flame, Element, Delfonik, Shawty Slim and Xtreme.

The younger guard cannot be forgotten, these are DJ’s Trent, Pharmer, Montalbon, and Street Urchin. Store these names in your mind like a deck of decibel defying playing cards; in the event that you, the reader, decide to get down. Be forewarned, the one DJ to avoid Downtown is notorious laptop purist WOLF!Arms! Seriously, he still has my copy of Layer Cake, he owes me $35 and he once played “Stillness is the Move” at Bottoms Up. Now that you know who the DJs are, it’s time to get down! Check these guys out, listen to their mixes; look them up on Facebook and presumptuously judge Pharmer for constantly wearing basketball shorts to gigs.
