est place in Macon, because that’s just what they’ve created out there. Gone are the days of four wheelers and rope swings, and I wasn’t convinced that was a good thing until I saw this place. It’s got to be up there with the best parks in the Southeast if not the country. And once everyone sees it, I’m betting donations will start pouring in to make it even better and to connect it with the current River walk. Once that’s done, we’ll have just about everything a town needs right here in Macon, and I’m looking forward to watching my kids grow up using this place. The Grand opening May 29

We have so many stories that have gone untold because we didn’t have the square footage to share them.” The new Tubman Museum’s grand opening, is in partnership with the 19th Annual Pan African Festival of Georgia, and will begin on May 16 at 11 a.m. with a ceremonial parade from the old building to the new Cherry St. location. Amerson River Park ReOpens May 30 One year and $5.6 Million Later... It is outdoor awesomeness! BY NICOLE THURSTON Families across Central Georgia have been waiting with baited breath for the reopening of the Amerson River Park in North Macon, and after several months, the 166 acre park is ready to reveal its $5.6 million facelift. On Saturday, May 30, from 11am until 7pm, everyone is invited to the Grand Re-opening Celebration. Not only will families get to enjoy activities and live music on the Great Lawn adjacent to the playground, but they will have an opportunity to see the improvements made to the recreational park. “Amerson’s Grand Opening will be a great way for the community to see the new amenities and experience the park in a new way,” said Nicole Kubas, Director of Place for NewTown Macon. Mayor of Macon-Bibb County, Robert Reichert says that the park will become a destination for the entire region, “We are not stopping at this.” He says plans are in the works to connect the River Park to the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail. As of now, with the help of such organizations and foundations as NewTown Macon, Peyton Anderson Foundation, Bragg Jam, The E.G. Grassman Trust, Lewis Foundation, and Porter Properties, major improvements have been made that will make a significant impact on eco-tourism and activities for families living or visiting Macon. Some of the improvements people will see include changes to the picnic and pavilion areas. For one, the Porter Pavilion area includes a new drop-off and formal lawn in front, as well as more parking. The canoe launch is another big addition with a new vehicular canoe pickup area, parking, and built-in steps to Bowman Creek. Plus, close to .6 miles of new trails were added along the Great Lawn. Families can now enjoy about seven miles of paved and unpaved trails, interpretive markers with historic narratives, new benches with views of the river, and additional mountain bike trails.

Kubas says the grand re-opening is the perfect opportunity to experience Amerson River Park for the first time. “The Grand Opening will have live music, food trucks, kids activities, float trips, disc golf, and so much more.” Food trucks, always a crowd favorite, will be located between the overlook and the Great Lawn. On the backside of the Great Lawn, families can engage in a little friendly game of disc golf. Disc golf, also known as Frisbee golf, is a flying disc game, as well as a precision and accuracy sport, in which individual players throw a flying disc at a target. The float trips, led by Ocmulgee Expeditions, will be free of charge for attendees and run from 11am until 5pm. They plan to start the trips at the Jay Hall River Access and the take out will be at the Bragg Jam River Access. Aside from activities, the entire park will be open to the public. Families are encouraged to check out the 3.5 miles of newly paved trails and the .75 miles of trails that have fresh mulch. People are encouraged to fish and

float on their own on the river. Picnics are encouraged and everyone is welcomed to use the picnic shelters and pavilions. This event is non-alcoholic. It took close to ten years of fundraising efforts to make this project a reality. According to NewTown Macon President and CEO, Josh Rogers, this is a perfect example of a community coming together for the greater good. “The partnership at Amerson enabled new amenties and enhancements,” said Rogers, “The re-opening adds to the current momentum in Macon.” After the Re-Opening, the park will be open seven days a week from 7am until 7pm. The Department of Parks & Beautification will be responsible for maintaining, staffing, and booking special and private events at the park. One key area that could potentially help sustain the improvements and help continue on with the plan will be the use of the space for outdoor concerts, parties, family reunions, and so much more. Another key factor in the park reopening will be the use of the KABOOM playground, located adjacent to the Great Lawn. This playground was one of the first handicap-usable playgrounds in Central Georgia. Before, families had to use port-a-potties, now permanent stall restrooms are close to the picnic and playground area. With increased parking, and smoother trails, families can now thoroughly enjoy the forest, meadows, and ecologically significant wetlands right in the middle of Macon, Georgia. According to Kubas, everyone is welcome to attend the ‘Grand Re-Opening” of Amerson Water Park. For those looking for transportation, the Macon Transit Authority will be offering shuttle service from the Hutchings Career Center parking lot. The event is Saturday, May 30th from 11am until 7pm. No motorized recreational vehicles or all-terrain vehicles are allowed on the trails. Visit http://www.ohtmacon.com/amerson-river-park/ for more information. 11thHourOnline.com 11

On one fateful day in the mid-60’s a group a long hairs pooled their money together for two plates. Mama Louise felt sorry for them and gave them all a heaping helping. A friendship between her and The Allman Brothers Band was born. A friendship that took her on quite a ride that included a seat on the tour bus in 1972 and lifelong friendships with Gregg and the rest of the band. 14 MAY 15 - 29, 2015

“You are stone cold, Teddy Bear, you know that?” I looked ahead and gripped the steering wheel tight. They piled out and went inside. My foot was shaking so bad I was nervous the car would choke out. I don’t know what I thought they were doing in there, but I knew it probably wasn’t good. After 10 or 15 minutes, I saw them run out the door. They got in the car and told me to go. I let go of the clutch too fast, but we didn’t choke out, just lurched a little against the pavement. I hit the road. “Just keep calm, Teddy Bear, nice and easy, don’t speed, and make sure you follow the rules,” Bean was smiling as he addressed me. “Just get us out of this town, we’ll pull over and I’ll drive.” When we got out of town, I pulled over. Bean clapped me on the back and told me to scoot over and ride shotgun. We rolled the windows down and nobody spoke much all the way back to downtown Macon. When we pulled up in front of the pool hall, the guys in the back seat got out and walked inside – heading for the beer cooler, I imagine. Bean stayed back in the car with me. “You’re a good kid, you know that, Teddy? You did real good out there today. I can look at somebody and tell if they’re a rat, did you know that?” “What’s a rat?” I asked him. “A rat is like a tattle–tale, the worst kind of person. Nobody likes them. They aren’t worth two shits. I know you aren’t a rat, Teddy.”

Bean leaned over and handed me a paper bag full of money. I took it. “No sir, I ain’t a rat.” “I want you to take this home, and if you ever tell your parents, or your friends, or anyone else about this, you’re going to be in the worst kind of trouble. You understand that, Teddy? If you keep this a secret, then you can enjoy this money and not have to worry about anything for a really long time. You understand that, Teddy?” He got out of the front seat and followed the others inside. I got out, stuck the bag in my jacket, walked to the bus stop and went home. I had an old golf bag in my closet, and I stuffed the money in there. When I got the courage to pull it out and count it later, it amounted to over 15 grand. I’ve wondered a lot what possessed those guys to do what they did, and why they would choose to involve a kid. I always considered that maybe they knew something about me that I didn’t even know. That they knew I was capable of being a part of what they were doing. And I listened to Bean. I never told a soul about what they did, never let anyone know about the money I had in that golf bag. I’d take some out when I needed it. I helped pay a few bills for my folks when I could without getting noticed. I didn’t rack balls anymore, though. I didn’t need to. I would go back down to have a Coca-Cola and watch some pool every now and then. I even saw Bean and his friends a few times. He’d always smile at me and say, “Hey-ya Teddy! You

ain’t hurting for anything now, are you? You need anything?” “No sir,” I’d always say. “I’m doing good.” Eventually, I stopped seeing him there. Stopped seeing his friends too. I don’t know what ever happened to them. Maybe they kept committing crimes and got caught, or maybe they just moved on, or got killed, or died of old age. I don’t know that I would say what followed in my own life was their fault. I wouldn’t even say they put the idea in my head to start doing crime. But that day with them certainly didn’t help to quell the notion I got in my head that money came easy when you took it. And that notion changed my life. Looking back, I think I just became indifferent about that thing with Bean and his buddies. I guess I was born with this general sense of I don’t give a fuck-ness and maybe that’s what wrecked me in the end. I just didn’t care about things. You asked me to do something, and I’d probably do it. My parents were honest, hardworking folks. They would have beat me to death if they knew I had that stolen money. My brother is an honest, Christian man that has been married 45 years. I can’t really point at anything and say, that’s why I’m this way. But I am this way, and I hung around those that are this way, and we got into a lot of trouble over the years. The street where I grew up was dirt. Mikena Avenue was one block. At one end sat Virgil Powers grammar school and at the other sat a Tabernacle Church. On that one block there were 17 boys around my age, and 5 or 6 girls. All we did was run around together, play ball together, and fight. Let someone come on that block and

fuck with one of us, and they had some serious trouble on their hands. But we fought amongst ourselves too. I started preparing myself for fights every morning by the time I was a freshman in high school. I’d do my push-ups and my pullups first thing and put something hard in my pocket I could knock somebody with if I had to. But everybody was like that back then. It paid to be tough. We all wanted to be. Each time I ran into someone I didn’t know, I sized them up. Immediately thought can I beat this person in a fight? That was always the first thought that came to my head. I usually answered yes, and once I did, I was going to find a reason to test out my theory. If you looked at me wrong, if you bumped into me or anyone with me, you were going to have to fight. And I don’t just tussle on the ground like they do these days. I’m talking about cowboy shit, standing up and throwing hands for 20-30 minutes until somebody can’t go no more. That’s a fight. Smash something until it breaks and stops and everything goes black as tar. Before the Allman Brothers got big, they were in a band called the Allman Joys. They played on Mulberry Street in downtown Macon one night. Everyone was talking about this guy that had come to the show from Twiggs County, and how he was this great athlete. Supposedly he was really tough. I had someone point him out, and I walked up to him in the crowd. He was a big ole boy, a few years older than me, but I wasn’t afraid. I bumped into him but he just glanced at me and kept looking up there at the stage. I walked by again and stepped on his foot. This guy wouldn’t get mad, so I just hit him like a rattlesnake, right in his face, just to see what would happen.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN! The 2016 Election

Well a funny thing happened on the way to the Hillary Clinton Democratic nomination and subsequent landslide against us hapless Republicans as all of a sudden the former First Lady, former Senator and former Secretary of State has not one but two people running against her in the upcoming primaries. Not only has crazy Bernie Sanders, an Independent U. S. Senator from Vermont who is a self described “democratic socialist”, thrown his hat into the ring, but so has former Rhode Island Senator and Governor Lincoln Chafee, a much more formidable opponent, in my opinion, to Hillary. Before you dismiss Chafee and say, “He doesn’t have a chance…who the hell is Lincoln Chafee?” this is a man with a VERY deep political heritage, whose father was a U. S. Senator, had a Great-Great Grandfather who was Governor of Rhode Island as well a Great-Great Uncle who was also Governor and another who was also a U. S. Senator. Chafee began his political career as a Republican when he was chosen to fill the spot for his late father who died in office in 1999, switched to being an Independent in 2007 and won the Governor’s chair in his home state in 2010 and then switched to the Democrat Party in 2012. Further, he’s intelligent, well spoken and can debate; he’s fiscally conservative but socially liberal. The most important thing he has going for him, however, is that his last name isn’t Clinton, a fact that will be huge and is becoming bigger every day. Hillary certainly is not the Teflon coated politician her husband is or we would already be calling her Madam President. President Obama figured out how to beat her when she was a shoe-in 7 years ago by setting up organizations in caucus states and playing to the left of their party and giving her the middle. Chafee will learn from his example but also has the help of the email scandal and not to mention Clinton’s involvement in Benghazi, neither fact he even has to mention in debates as the American people already know about

HILLARY CLINTON

them. As a close friend of mine said when we were speaking about Presidential politics, “I’m a Democrat, but not for Hillary.” I firmly think this will be a sentiment that will continue to grow as Dems get to know Chafee on a national platform. Now before you think I’ve jumped ship and gone to the Democrat Party, you’re sadly mistaken. I just hope I’m right about the future of the Democrat Party because I love my country and if a Republican doesn’t win in 2016, I want the best person at the helm of the United States. Readers of my column in the past may remember that my first choice for the GOP nomination for 2016 is Governor Susanna Martinez of New Mexico. I was also extremely impressed with former Texas Governor Rick Perry’s last couple of years as the Lone Star state’s chief officer, but I am now also extremely excited and impressed with former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, who on May 4th announced to George Stephanopoulos that she was running for the White House. Both fiscally and socially conservative, Fiorina will play well with the GOP’s base that is being splintered by Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson and Mike Huckabee, plus as she is from California, may even be able to help the GOP get the Golden State back into the red column. (Yeah, I know that’s a pipe dream…but what the hell..Think and dream big, right?) CONTINUED ON PAGE 33 Breakfast 6-10am Lunch 11am-2pm

FACES OF MACON Arts + Culture + Entertainment

Shirod Cooley’s latest project, Dreamboard, is an EP he produced for the best Hip Hop artist in Macon right now, Floco Torres. It was one of those cloudy, grey Sundays and the two were sitting at Ronshad Berry’s house when he prodded them to get together on an EP. Cooley pulled out some old school beats and Floco pulled out nine notebooks of raps. The collaboration led them to Star Motel Studio, where they put together what may be the best EP to come out of Macon in many, many years. If you haven’t heard it yet, you will. Floco will be playing Bragg Jam, and if we’re lucky a show or two in between now and then. PHOTO ANDY CARTER

Macau, a peninsula across the Pearl River from Hong Kong, was proclaimed one of the world’s richest cities by the World Bank. It’s also the world’s largest gambling city, a sort of Las Vegas on steroids. It’s a city that never sleeps. And during Shirod Cooley’s (AKA Shawty Slim) short stay there, this must have been convenient. Three hundred bottles of champagne, luxury speedboats, bodyguards, red carpets, VIP rooms, and awesomely bad Karaoke - sounds like a dream. But for Cooley this could pass as an average Saturday night. It wasn’t always this way. His life began in a tragedy almost too hard to imagine. Mr. Cooley’s father Wayne met a lovely young lady named Shirley at Grambling University in Louisiana, where the two were in school at the time. They fell in love, got married, and moved to Atlanta. When she was eight months pregnant, Shirley was in a car wreck and sustained a neck injury that she would not recover from. She remained on life support long enough for her son Shirod to be born, then passed two days later. Wayne was lucky that he had the support of his family during this time, and he would later remarry Beverly, who Cooley would come to know as mom. When Cooley was around six years old, his parents told him the real story, and it went off like a bomb. “I’ve always been a silly kid, always been a loner, but then my whole world felt like it was make believe. I was angry for a while, but I would find peace by sitting around and listening to my headphones,” he says. Fast forward fifteen or so years. Cooley dropped out of college in Macon right after he applied for an internship at Sirius Satellite Radio in NYC. He got the internship, though Sirius thought he was still a college student. In a panic, and in a life-changing move, he conned a professor out of some letterhead, wrote a recommendation letter from his “school,” and landed the internship - and with it the kind of education he couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. When he returned to Macon, a DJ spot at WIBB opened up, and of course he got the job and began to ambitiously work his way up the ranks. From 2004-2011 he went from a part time spinner to #1 on the radio for 8 years in a row. He became such a trusted presence that he was put in charge of creating all the commercials on all the urban stations. Around 2009, Cooley, at the request of his fellow WIBB DJ Dirt Dog, started hanging out downtown in Macon at places

like the Red Eye Tavern, and, when they closed, Bottoms Up. He met DJ Trent, Roger Riddle and a few other downtown DJ’s that helped get him into the growing, diversifying music scene. Before long he had lines formed down the block to try and get into his dance parties, forever changing the dance scene in downtown Macon. Around this same time a fellow named Brian Richardson came into Cooley’s office at WIBB and put a CD on his desk from an artist named B.o.B. This is not an uncommon event for a popular DJ, and the cd sat on his desk for three months. Every time he cleaned his desk off, for some reason he found he couldn’t throw that one CD away. But he didn’t listen to it either. When he did finally put it in his player, looking for some beats to use on a commercial spot, he was blown away. The song was Haters Everywhere, and Cooley immediately put it in the rotation. He played it 30 times in one week. Then he got suspended. Corporate radio programs their playlists, and they frown upon a DJ diverging from that. But by that time, it was too late. The song had so much momentum in Macon that there were constant requests for it. Cooley got B.o.B. a show at Club Levels in Macon, and when they met for the first time in person, B.o.B. told him that he appreciated his support and that he’d never forget him for it. Sure enough, a few years later, fresh off touring London, B.o.B. showed up at the WIBB studio to give Cooley an exclusive interview. They talked for almost 3 hours, forging a relationship that would end up changing Cooley’s life. It was a typical Saturday morning at the studio for Cooley in fall of 2011. He was hung-over from DJing at Bottoms Up all night and trying to put together his morning show when he got a call from B.o.B.’s manager asking him to come be their DJ for a show with Rihanna in Canada. He jumped at the chance. Then another call came the next week for a show at Syracuse, then a couple of weeks later for a run of shows in Moscow. Eventually, he decided to quit the radio station and work as a full time DJ for B.o.B. Since then he’s played on every continent except South America. He was on the road for 46 weeks one year. Talk shows, awards ceremonies, tens of thousands of people, and all the perks of travelling the world with a hip-hop superstar - suddenly, but really not so suddenly, this became real life for Shirod Cooley.

Lang, preparing for open mic later that night, sampled the signature Twang Burger, piled high with a fried green tomato, bacon, lettuce and tomato. Alday will be making her Tractor Room debut on Saturday, May 16. Almost as beautiful as she, the chef prepared a slice of chocolate pecan pie with cinnamon ice cream. A we b s i t e h e l p s c o o r d i n a t e d o z e n s o f l o c a l f a r m s f o r f r e s h p r o d u c e , d a i r y & m e a t s Nestled among ten acres off of Wesleyan Drive, Macon’s very first farm has sprung back to life with a unique take on a C.S.A. (Community Supported Agriculture.) The CSA concept has been around for many years. It is a traditional business model for farmers- a way for them to share their bounty with the community. Thedirtfarmers. com was created to help not only feed local families fresh, locally grown food, but to also take some of the financial burden off the farmer. It started with one man, Joe Dirt. He lives on the property, which was once a working pig farm during the 1940s, and spent years working for a major food provider for restaurants. What he saw was a lot of s prepackaged food being bought and served and he knew could bring fresher, better food to the people. Joe began establishing relationships with Georgia farmers. He is responsible for coordinating what crops the CSA gets, as well as always creating new contacts with people. According to the Dirt Farmer’s Cyber Farmer, Moriah Lavender, connecting people to local food is the heart of what they do. “I signed up for the Dirt Farm as a CSA member, back in July of 2013,” said Moriah, “I got one delivery and was in love with it. I was so impressed with the quality of the produce, the variety of the produce, how fresh it was, how good the eggs were… I got involved.” Lavender is a volunteer, as is most of the staff at dirtfarmer.com. She along with the rest of the group, work hard each week to ensure your experience is a positive one. She says the process of signing up is very easy. It is a three step process to becoming a member of the CSA. First, you go to thedirtfarmers.com. Click on “Sign me up.” You then decide if you would like to pick up your CSA box or have it delivered. Then you simply choose between the Farmer’s Choice (where they choose the items for you, which is like a traditional CSA,) or you choose the custom share. The latter option is what sets them apart from the traditional CSA. “This way you

Customize your “share” online with fresh eggs, local whole milk and yogurt, goat cheese and grass-fed beef. get to pick and choose… so that we can suit everyone’s needs,” said Lavender. Dirt Farmers works specifically with local Georgia farmers, many right here in the mid-State. “The meats are all pastured and humanely raised and we do a lot with Rocking Chair Ranch, “said Lavender, “One thing I am really impressed with is our family of shrimpers from New Brunswick. It is a guy and his family and they catch fresh Wild Georgia shrimp, freeze it, and bring it right to us to bring directly to our members’ door.” One of the biggest perks with joining a CSA is knowing where your food comes from. With the increase in growth hormones and chemically treated vegetables,

more and more families are choosing locally farmed or organic fruits, vegetables, and meats, in what many consider to be a healthier option. However, availability and variety is often difficult for people to navigate. “I love the transparency of where our food comes from. When you go online, you can click and see which farm it came from. You can click through to the farm’s webpage and learn all about their farming practices,” said Lavender, “Things like Atlanta Fresh Greek Yogurt, they use all pastured cows. They don’t use recumbent bovine growth hormone and their yogurt is fresh. Twenty four hours from cow to carton to us.” Dirtfarmers.com is passionate about accessibility. One of the newest ventures they are tackling will be to open a Farm Store at the Eisenhower Pkwy Farmers Market. They believe that the current CSA may not be an option for all families, and this way, more people in Central Georgia can be served. Currently, the CSA offers a Farm Stand every Saturday, at their Wesleyan Drive location from 10am until 2pm. It is opened to the public, and according to Lavender, a wonderful experience for families, “We offer things in the farm stand that we don’t have in our online selection. Everything from fresh catches from Brunswick, to farm fresh flowers.” “People with children especially like to come on Saturdays. Kids like to see Bugs the bunny, and you can often hear the rooster. There are chickens and goats out back, and we even had baby ducks,” said Lavender, “It really is a destination on Saturdays.” Thedirtfarmers.com offers a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, meats, dairy, and personal items farmed fresh locally. A basic “share” ranges from $32 weekly or biweekly. Your delivery day depends on your location. Currently only Macon deliveries are available, and the deliveries are made on Saturdays. For more information, or to visit their farm, visit thedirtfarmers.com 11thHourOnline.com 29

THE INTERVIEW

Kevin Spencer aka K.Spence of ATL’s Yacht Rock Vocals, guitar, percussion, whiskey & chief mouthpiece Rank: Captain

Has your popularity been a surprise at all? That’s like asking a professional cake maker if they are surprised that people celebrate at the unveiling of their work!? Of course we understand why people love our band... we’re a bunch of kind, fun loving jackasses that can play the ____ out of some of the best music in history. Our Recipe? We just pay homage to the best of the best while drinking high end Bourbon, that’s it. That’s our recipe. Having headlined in the past at Second Sundays on College Hill, Bragg Jam kick off party, The Hummingbird, Bragg Jam with the Blind Boys of Alabama... we’re truly looking forward to docking the boat back in Macon! After all... Macon really is Music Town USA, Nashville just won’t admit it. Get yourself a ticket, you won’t regret it. See you Friday night good people!! How did you guys get together? ‘Operation Pirate Recruit’ is classified information. However, our pirate ship is an organization much like any other business. Life on board our pirate ship is much less strict and regimented than on board a Royal Navy or merchant vessel, but there are still duties that have to be done. There is a command structure, and different men have different jobs to make sure that everything runs smoothly. Well-run and organized pirate ships are more successful, where-as ships that lack discipline and leadership generally don’t last very long. Common Positions aboard our ship: Captain, Navigator, Quartermaster, Boatswain, Barrel Duster, Carpenter, Doctor and Master Gunner.

be in on it these days. We try not to think about the smaller boats in our wake unless they get to close, which then becomes the responsibility of the Master Gunner from the Drum Throne. Rule number 124; article b: Don’t piss Daniel off. But in all sincerity, we didn’t write these songs... so we haven’t developed egos about being there before everyone else. Our egos have developed from our crushing musical abilities. (note to self: We’re gonna need a bigger boat)

Do you guys feel responsible for the resurgence of interest in Smooth Music from the 70’s and 80’s. Everyone seems to

You guys are playing Steely Dan in Macon Friday night. Is this a show that you’ve done before?

30 MAY 15 - 29, 2015

Name a concert you didn’t see that you wish you would have. Ganesh (my co-Captain) and I were too drunk to remember our show at Piedmont Park last Friday, but we heard we were great.

We have performed ‘an evening of Steely Dan’ to sold out crowds at the Earl Smith Strand Theatre in Marietta and Terminal West in Atlanta; including all of AJA and Decade of Dan. This show is a little different. We have cherry picked all the best Steely Dan / Crowd Faves to make one 16 song set... Rikki Don’t Lose That Number, Reelin In The Years, Home At Last, Peg, My Old School, Hey Nineteen, Time Out Of Mind, Josie, Night by Night... the list goes on. The second set is again, a selection of crowd faves from the Yacht Rock genre. Three reasons why Steely Dan awesome!? Reason number one: Duh. It’s Steely Dan! Reason number two: Those that know, know. Reason number three: They named their band after a phallic device from a William S Burroughs novel. - That takes balls (see what I did there?) Tell us what to expect Friday Night? At our shows... It’s always 73º, clear skies and 100% chance of no panties. aka: 3.5 hours of fun fueled hits! If you can’t figure it out by now... we try not to take anything seriously except for the music. When you’re performing some of the toughest arrangements in pop music history, you have to take them seriously! To do otherwise would be kind of like card tricks on the radio; useless.

2016 Election, cont. There are many combinations that could spell a victory for the Grand Old Party in 2016, but I really don’t think there is any path that Rand Paul, Ted Cruz or Ben Carson play a part in. I do feel, however, that almost any combination of Rubio, Martinez, Perry, Huckabee or Fiorina and possibly Jeb Bush could even beat the Clinton machine, which by the time of the election may resemble the Erector set of a deranged five year old instead of the juggernaut that we’ve seen in the past. The next several months should be fun to watch as the primary process begins its’ Darwinian phase of political cannibalization of both parties with Donald Trump

on the sidelines slicking back his hair in anticipation. I honestly don’t think Trump is going to run as a Republican and if he does run it at all it will be as a Third Party candidate. Trump is a business man who’s savvy and using this as self promotion. I don’t see him lining up in a ten person debate between Republicans where he has three minutes at best of national spotlight. (Don’t forget that before Ross Perot became kooky, he was leading in the polls against then President Bush and future President Clinton, and then took a last minute surge after the debates to finish with almost 20% of the national vote total.) Let the games begin!

The New Yorker raved of their Town Hall performance: “I can’t imagine then, that Lake Street Dive—a quartet led by an amazing young singer, Rachael Price—won’t be getting some air time soon.” Rolling Stone called the band “unexpected showstoppers”. 36 MAY 15 - 29, 2015

Around noon on April 26th, 2015, things got weird in Central City Park. Not ‘there are alligators in the park’ weird or ‘those guys are doing more than talking in that Ford Escort’ weird, but weird of the sonic variety. Fresh Produce Records, with support from the Knight Foundation, hosted the first Wysteria Festival, a free marathon of music in the spirit of the relaxed, communal shows put on in the late 1960s and early 1970s by the Allman Brothers Band and Wet Willie in the very same park. Seventeen acts performed on two stages over the course of the 12-hour festival, representing an eclectic mix of styles ranging from introspective acoustic to full-frontal electronic sludge freak-out, all laced with psychedelic undertones and fueled by genre-bending experimentation. Local acts like Quell, Tanosweg and Corner Coronah mixed with regional bands, including Faun and Pan Flute, Insonitus Lux, Mendocino and Linear Downfall, who recently collaborated with the Flaming Lips as Electric Wurms. But perhaps just as interesting as the music at the festival were the people that attended. For a music scene to operate at its full potential, it’s the people who dig into the music just as much as it the musicians that make the magic, and the scene that’s sprung up around Fresh Produce Records is full of magicians. We asked some of these folks for their thoughts on the festival – their responses highlighted a welcome diversity of musical experiences across generations of an extended musical family. Take a look at what a few of them had to say, and keep your ear to the ground for Wysteria 2.0, whatever shape it may take: “The whole day was magic… all the bands were amazing, everyone had a good

time… trust I’ll be there for the next one.” - Goth Shaggy “[About Faun and Pan Flute] A ton of musical fun from various musicians all at once. I didn’t have a chance to count how many musicians were playing together, but it was amazing sound that I did not expect. Wonderful! The peace, love, respect and support from everyone on this day is a great example of how music is important to our environment and our lives.” - Bill Brookins

“We... enjoyed talking to the artists and their families who had gathered for this very family friendly event! (especially Juniper Elizabeth, 6 months old!) It seemed like everyone was really enjoying themselves and getting along no matter who they were, where they came from or what their favorite music....the music was the common denominator, as it has always been… I hope that this event grows as a way to introduce new, original bands to the Macon/Middle GA area in an affordable and family friendly way so that our musical road can truly go on FOREVER!” - Mama D. “Good, loving, raw, and rad folk.” – Fritz

“[The best part of the festival was] just sitting around with loved ones and enjoying such a unique time in the park with great weird music...This should happen WAY more often.“ - Clark Bush “I love our community so much and am very proud of all these beautiful creative people which I consider to be my family.” – Festival organizer William Dantzler aka Willie D.

nominated for three Grammys, four IBMA awards and the Americana Music Association’s New Artist of the Year. They were presented the International Bluegrass Music Association’s award for Emerging Artist of the Year in 2009. That same year the band spent a week in Georgia as part of the cast in the movie “Get Low. The movie, that starred Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Bill Murray, featured a soundtrack that included four tunes by The ‘Drivers. In 2011 the English pop star Adele began performing the SteelDriver song “If It Hadn’t Been For Love in her live performances. Her opinion of The SteelDrivers is: “They’re a blues, country, bluegrass, swagger band and they are brilliant. They have been invited to perform on numerous radio and TV shows ranging from The Grand Ole Opry to NPR’s Mountain Stage to the Conan O’Brien show.
