o this past week I got sick. Really sick. Sick enough for me to call a friend and get a Doctor recommendation because even though I’ve lived here almost a decade I’ve never been to the Doctor here. I made an appointment and felt like a kid when that thin butt paper on the table crinkled up underneath me. At this point I had sweated through my shirt, and was shivering. The Doctor came in. “Good Lord son, why are you so sweaty?” “I’m sick.” “Good heavens, you are really sweaty. Good LORD what is that on your head ? “That’s a birthmark.” “Lord that thing’s big. Get some sunscreen on that. Can you stick your tongue out and say ahh.” “Ahh” “Good Lord.” “What, is my throat closed?” “You’ve had a lot of Dental Work.” “Oh, yeah I have.” “Let’s listen to your chest.” rattle rattle rattle “Whoah, wait a minute now. What in the world. Did you just ride in here with Doc Holiday? Did a coyote just bring you across the border with a bunch of others? Do you have TB?”

“No sir, I don’t believe I have TB.” “Well you sound like some old man who has spent some time in Virginia.” “Wow.” I just started laughing, which made me cough, which made him laugh. I may not have found the perfect Doctor, but I had definitely found the perfect doctor for me. Before I was gone, he’d whipped up something on his prescription pad that would knock the pneumonia off of me, and he’d gotten some laughs for both of us, at my expense which I guess, as they say, is the best medicine. This, I thought, is why I love Macon. Another reason I love Macon is Jared Wright. That fine looking young Man on last issue’s cover, hitching a ride to pleasure town, was the victim of an auto break in, right after he helped shut down the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. After working there for the past few years, he caught a ride home from the closing party last Saturday night. When he came back Sunday, windows were smashed and his Mountain Bike was gone. Taking matters into his own hands, he took a small souvenir Braves bat to the streets of downtown and had the culprit in the hands of the authorities within a few hours. Kudos to you, Mr. Downtown Macon Vigilante, Jr.

I saw the Hangover II this past week, and I don’t really know what I expected, but it sucked. I mean walk out of the theater bad. X-Men First Class turned out to be pretty good though. I had no idea that mutants helped avert the Cuban Missle Crisis. A movie I am pretty excited about is Blue Like Jazz. Keith Watson, from New City Church gave me the book a few years back, and I really enjoyed it. Paste magazine called it one of the 20 best books of the decade after all. And now thanks to a Kickstarter Campaign, and musician turned filmmaker Steve Taylor, it’s coming to a theatre probably not near us soon. I was getting pretty excited about the new season of True Blood hitting this month on HBO.

Unfortunately the coolest app I’ve downloaded in some time, HBO GO, ruined it for me. The app allows you to access every HBO program ever on your ipad, and I was able to watch the first six minutes of a not yet released True Blood series premier, which opens in Fairyland. I almost puked on the device and I’m not happy about it. This series makes a habit out of jumping the shark though, so I’m sure it will be well received. Premiers Sunday, June 12.

I’m not a huge Pearl Jam fan, I stopped listening to them almost before flannel got too hot for Georgia that summer, but Eddie Vedder’s new album, Ukulele Songs, is worth a listen. I also got My Morning Jacket’s new piece, Circuital, Middle Brother’s self titled joint, and Black Lips, Arabia Mountain, this week . You should also check out the new video of Mumford and Sons, The Bookshop Sessions, which is just magnificent. If your not a National Geographic subscriber, you might want to pick up the latest edition, which turns their lens on the birth of religion, which they say may have had as great an affect on civilization as agriculture. It’s as interesting a thing as I’ve read in months.

ateway Macon’s latest high profile, attention-grabbing contest, aptly entitled Macon Music, was introduced this week at the Douglass Theatre on the same historic stage where Otis Redding launched his legendary career. “Macon is looking for the next generation super star to call its own,” said Executive Director, Beth Dunwody. “The Gateway Initiative developed the new musical competition to create more buzz and to enhance the public awareness of Macon’s rich musical heritage.” Macon Music’s $25,000 total prize package is an investment in Macon’s economic future and a catalyst for attracting top talent. According to a 2011 study conducted by B. William Riall, Ph.D., the estimated economic impact of the music industry in Georgia is $3.7 billion annually. Additionally, the study credits the industry with creating 19,955 jobs and generating more than $313 million in tax revenues for state and local governments. The Macon Music contest winner will receive studio time to record a three song EP (extended play mini-album). Two- time Grammy-nominated Macon resident and percussionist, Steve Moretti, will produce the project. The grand prize package includes a hi-definition music video, an array of promotional tools, and a CD release party at the Grand Opera House. Macon Music is phase two of an integrated marketing campaign that was

strategically planned to highlight Macon’s musical assets. As its inaugural project last fall, Gateway Macon commissioned an original song and produced a music video to showcase the city’s assets. Rollingstone rocker Chuck Leavell, international violinist Robert McDuffie, rapper Sonny Spoon, Grammy-nominated drummer Steve Moretti, guitar virtuoso Peter Stroud and singer/songwriter Tony Reyes collaborated to develop “A Little More Soul.” In the span of nine months, the song and video have garnered global viewership and a bevy of national accolades including multiple TELLY and ADDY awards. The same award-winning sound, design and production team will judge, produce and develop the Macon Music prize package. Sunglow is the musical workings of Daniel Lynch, a resident of Savannah, Georgia. Daniel began experimenting with programming and electronics and eventually wound up creating a very unique sound that retains its originality while drawing comparisons to Washed Out or Panda Bear. WAIL BONE is one of many musical projects of Macon's Jacob Bruner (Stribling). Jacob has been writing and recording songs over the past few months and will be debuting most of his material at this show. MY WEEK WAS COOLER THAN YOURS Dylan York’s guide to getting down; he recaps what you may have missed sitting on your ass these past two weeks

recently watched the movie Howl starring James Franco and Jon Hamm. It was three in the morning and I was staying at a friend’s house to help her write a paper for class, it was last minute and I was supposed to be booked to shoot a show in Atlanta that evening. My ride fell through and I agreed to help with homework instead. It wasn’t the hipsploitation film I thought it would be, I thought James Franco playing Allen Ginsberg would be like Lil Bow-Wow playing John Coltrane. He actually did a great job, and I was glad to be in Macon for the night. I love this town; the minute I cross over Bass Road to leave my mind is like, “What the hell are you doing?” The last time I was booked in Atlanta I had to stay with my friend who’s an art teacher at Georgia State, I got lost in East ATL at 3AM and she forgot to tell me she had cats. I’m super allergic to cats. These past few weeks have brought some amazing shows to our scene, including the third Macon performance of Charlestonbased Megan Jean and the KFB. Megan and

her husband Byrne perform a washboarddriven eclectic two person circus of music she describes as Gypsy Americana; falling somewhere between Gogol Bordello and Jolie Holland. Their percussion section, Megan’s leg, a kick drum and a tambourine strapped to her ankle, pair perfectly with her husband Byrne’s banjo. I ran into Megan outside the Arts Exchange this past First Friday where The Magnificent Bastards were jamming on the corner with Back City Woods to celebrate the release of their album Did You Mean Mustard?, a tongue-in-cheek ode to a Google search of their nickname. Megan and I stood and talked as we watched the two bands play, she was slated to open for BCW right after Mag Tard had performed their official album release inside the Exchange. “We’re timing it so that once our show ends, everyone can head to The Rookery and see Back City Woods and Megan Jean perform,” Mag Tard guitarist Chris Nylund told me earlier that evening. It was the best First Friday I had experienced

since I moved here ten months ago; three amazing bands working together to make one amazing event downtown. A few months prior BCW had brought Megan Jean to Macon for the first time, the show at The Hummingbird nearly brought the house down. I was so energized that night I stayed up until 5AM, unable to grasp what had just happened. Macon instantly fell in love with the duo and they play here every chance they get. Speaking of The Bird, these past few weeks Ladies Night has been the place to be on a Wednesday. I don’t know what it is, but something has changed for the better, maybe it was bartender Lindsey LeBlanc finally getting the lights turned off over the dance floor. Ladies Night is The Hummingbird’s weekly dance party that starts at ten Wednesday nights. Recently Roger Riddle jumped on the tables during Shawty Slim’s guest appearance and played a remix of One More Time. I’ve been pretty vocal in my desire to hear more Electro the past couple months, it was nice to see an end to my con-

stant cries of “Would it kill you to play some Daft Punk?!” going unanswered. A few days later Roger tells me he’s DJing a dance party at the Rookery the second Sunday night in August, I immediately slap him a high-five. I ended these past few weeks as everyone in Macon should, at The Rookery’s Sunday Jam. It’s a glorified jam session led by three of the most talented musicians in Macon; Michael Collins, James Lengel and Denny Hanson and hosted by local comedian and podcaster Jacob Ryals. Amber Pierce of the Vineyard is a main staple of the event as well, bringing an edge of Americana soulfulness and outright adorableness to the whole thing. It begins every Sunday at nine and you’ll usually find me outside enjoying the music and the warm summer night. Sometimes I think about this scene, and I think about the pictures I’ve seen and the stories I have read from the Beat Generation. I think about Ginsberg reading his poetry, Coltrane playing the Village Vanguard, Kerouac lighting an unfiltered cigarette in some shady back alley. I think about JuBee bringing his baby son to shows, I think about Denny drinking strong coffee, I think about Dan Zook philosophizing on his porch into the wee hours of the morning…I see the best minds of my generation.

e met in early May at the Applebee’s on Riverside Drive. Though it was largely empty inside, Paul Bronson still seemed to know everyone. At one point, an older couple walked in and he excused himself to greet them. “They’re from my church,” he explained. I told him I had two more questions left and for a moment it was like Final Jeopardy: the 25-year-old firefighter/mayoral candidate and his campaign manager, straightening their backs, putting on game faces, getting serious while I paused, game show host-like, so they could compose themselves before the moment of truth. “Do you really think you can win?” It was hard to tell if he was hurt by the question or just confused—at what point during the last hour and a half did I not get that he believes he can win?—or was he just surprised that it was such a simple question. Or maybe just disappointed it was such a familiar question. “Yes.” I ask if he’s crazy to do it. “If wanting to see the city move forward is crazy; if wanting to see more business, more jobs come to the city—if that’s crazy; if wanting to see a better educational system for our kids is crazy, then I guess I’m the craziest man in the world.” ...A NEW MACON A month has since passed and it’s official. Bronson has plopped down the $3,105.02 qualifying fee to enter the mayor’s race against a trio of contenders who are not only more experienced politicians but have actually all run against each other. In 1991, current Macon Mayor Robert Reichert, former Mayor C. Jack Ellis and former State Senator Robert Brown vied for the remainder of Tommy Olmstead’s unexpired term in the State Senate. Brown won that round, but Bronson was a five year old in 1991. Eight years ago, as a high schooler, he was almost as busy as he is today, working three jobs and going to school. Instead of Ruby Tuesday’s, Chuck E. Cheese and the Finish Line, today he’s a reservist with the Army National Guard and a substitute teacher for the Bibb County public schools, in addition to his job as a fire fighter with the Macon-Bibb Fire Department. He’s not married and has no kids, so maybe this is the right time to do something like this. Maybe he can’t help himself. “I’m running for the average person, the one who works 9to-5, the single mother and all the people facing problems finding jobs. I’m running for the young people—now, in this generation—whose future seems blurry.” If the race were decided on passion and confidence alone, you get the feeling that Bronson would be a mile ahead of his opponents. How that eventually translates at the polls is anyone’s guess, but there is no second guessing his intentions. From this perspective, he’s a breath of fresh air, an eager and willing public servant.

EDUCATE YOURSELF Bronson’s campaign manager is a young woman named Lekisha Joseph. Most of the time, she sits and listens, but here and there she too gets caught up in the moment— moved by the spirit—and just has to share something. “This is a great city,” she interjects, like someone suffering from a positive, hopeful variety of Tourette Syndrome. While she’s enjoying the work she’s doing with Bronson, she said her goal is to build a nonprofit organization that helps parents become more responsible for their children’s education by training the parents to do more teaching at home. Maybe there’s something in the water because Bronson and Joseph aren’t alone, though they have been overlooked, which is part of the reason they’ve stepped up and into politics.

Glover (no… no relation) is a 23-year-old college graduate of Tennessee State University in Nashville who has come back home to Macon, he says, to serve. “Macon has invested in me, and now it’s time for my great city to cash in on that investment.” Glover is running for Macon City Council in the Ward 3, Post 3 race against incumbent Tom Ellington, who at 38 is the second youngest member of council.

He draws an obvious—to some, but not enough—comparison between Macon and Nashville. “Nashville and Macon are both considered ‘Music Cities.’ However, the difference is that Nashville is owning that title, and Macon is not. Nashville is also Tennessee’s centrally located city just as Macon is to Georgia. However, again, Macon has not taken ownership of that title.” In a way, Glover says the problem is our attitude. “The day we decide that Macon is Georgia's premier city is the day we will began taking steps in the right direction.” There are plenty of tangible steps he says must be taken, and he’s been bold in taking some already. In regards to crime, he’s taken it upon himself to reach out to and speak with alleged gang leaders. He wants to help broker a peace accord between rival gangs. “If we do not get a handle on our growing crime rate this city is doomed.” HEAD ABOVE WATER Four years ago, Councilman Virgil Watkins was, as Glover is, a 23-year-old with political aspirations. In 2007, he squared off against Gerald Harvey, a then 57-year-old former city councilman, for the Ward 4, Post 3 seat. A former intern for the Ellis administration, Watkins won, becoming the youngest member of council. (Watkins has no opposition in this year’s race. Harvey is opposing incumbent Charles Jones this year for the Ward 4, Post 2 seat.) Though hardly a grizzled veteran, Watkins says he’s grown into a better councilman since first taking the seat. “Yeah, a lot of growth. I thought the (Ellis) internship would be enough. I thought I was more than ready then but it was a lot of rippin’ and runnin’.” The fact he was a recent college graduate, he says, helped. “It was probably a good thing I’d just graduated college because I still had that ‘study hard’ mentality. I still study constantly because I’m not a lawyer. I need to understand these materials we’re getting to review.” Despite the feeling he may have been overconfident when he first joined council, Watkins decided to run again because there’s something about public service that he truly enjoys. “At the end of the day, you can feel—even if it isn’t a big thing—like you did something to make someone’s life better.” Researchers have long documented that the correlation between idealism and youth, but that ambitious hope doesn’t always translate into political action. In Macon’s 2010 primary, which featured a vote on the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) proposed by county officials, more than 9,000 young people between the ages 20-30 years old were registered to vote. It was the best showing in any age group. However, only about 2,000 of those registered young people actually showed up to cast a vote for a ballot that was defeated by only 1,030 votes. If even half of the 7,000 who stayed home had voted yes, it would’ve not only turned the tides—it would’ve been a landslide. Glover thinks that might be changing, that his generation is ready to seize the reigns now. The problem, he says, is that the existing structure isn’t ready to relinquish them. “Our city is in a transitional period, the citizens are yearning for newer and younger leadership,” he says. “If young people are going to be met with negativity simply because of their age then why should we continue to pour money into programs like (4-H, Boys and Girls Club, National Young Leader Conference, etc)?” FACTS OF LIFE “Kids in my generation don’t focus in on the color of skin,” Bronson says. It’s slowly become a recognized fact that the racial tension that was so evident in the Civil Rights generation and handed down to their kids isn’t one of the prevailing factors for 20-30 year olds now. THE CONSPIRACY AGAINST ELAINE LUCAS BILL KNOWLES Active member of the Republican Party

k readers, mark the time and place you are reading this, because I, Bill Knowles, am about to admit I was wrong about something. A few columns back I told you that City Councilperson Elaine Lucas would probably run for her husband David’s position in the Georgia House after he abdicated his thrown to run for State Senator Robert Brown’s seat, who in turn is now running for mayor of Macon. (And if Brown has his way through consolidation would be crowned the Baron of Bibb County.) Anyway getting back to my admission of wrongness, Mrs. Lucas has instead qualified to run for reelection to her spot on city council. I was wrong. It didn’t surprise me that she would run for reelection, but I was wrong. There. Happy? Mrs. Lucas qualified to run for her position early last week, much to my dismay, but something funny happened on the way to the coronation. That “something” is a challenger who has sprung up to dare run against the ironfisted rule of Queen Elaine of Shurling. The challenger is former Macon Telegraph writer and former 11th Hour Magazine editor Chris Horne. Now, what I am NOT going to do with this column is endorse Mr. Horne. I can’t. He will have a big “D” next to his name at the ballot box and as the Vice-Chair of the Bibb County Republican Party, I am unable to. I WILL use this column however to set the record straight about some things that have been alleged by Elaine about Chris while reminding you who you have as a member of city council. Early last Friday, June 10th, the last day of qualifying, I received a text telling me that Elaine Lucas was at the Bibb County Board of

One remedy, he suggests, is to get more young people into office so they can put their attention towards the issues that face the city—unemployment, abandoned houses, rising crime—instead of the politics of color. “I serve a God that says love all mankind. That’s regardless of skin color, regardless of economic status. (God says,) ‘Love that man. I don’t care if that man has one leg, one arm and no teeth.’” He breathes deep and says, “With all the churches we have here, we’ve got to start pushing that message.” This aspect of the mayor’s job is one

In her rant, instead of welcoming competition and being gracious, she attacked Mayor Reichert and the Republican party for being behind Chris Horne’s candidacy saying that “its’ very clear to me and anyone else who’s kept up with this that the present Mayor, Mayor Reichert and the Republican Party are have initiated and are supporting this candidate against me. What they want to do is remove the ‘people’s candidate’ from office.” I couldn’t believe my ears. Well, yes I could. Nothing is surprising coming from this clown anymore.
