y very first concert was a double bill. Conway Twitty, with former county agent and seed salesman/ comedian, Mr. Jerry Clower. My mother and father took me when I was about 10-years old to Ray Charles’ hometown for the show. I remember Clower in his red tuxedo with his big ruffled shirt telling a story about taking a music class at the East Fork Consolidated High school in Mississippi. Miss Minnie Lee Stone taught the course and the class sold liniment vanilla extract for a month to buy up some of those “rhythm band instruments.” He said if you was good for two weeks, the teacher would let you “whop some sticks together,” and if you were good for a couple of weeks straight you could “tinky, tinky, tinky on that little triangle.” That was a joke back then.

Well, even today, were you to ride in my father’s truck, you would probably be able to find Clower Power or Conway sitting around somewhere in there, waiting to be stuck in the player.

That was the only concert I ever went to with my parents, and they’ve lived it ever since. I love that about them.

As I got older, my childhood sweetheart’s father used to have some

footage of the Atlanta (Byron) Pop Festival. He’d let me watch it some, and though the hippie boobs may have interested me more at the time, it was pretty evident something special was happening out in that soybean field.

Eventually, as Jimi Hendrix, and Allman Brothers albums started piling up in my car, I started to recognize just how special it was. Forty years later, people still post up their memories about it online. Nothing like it has happened near Macon since. I doubt it ever will. Though I don’t think the day went off without a hitch or two, back then it didn’t seem like people minded. Even the state patrol said “Screw it, let this happen.” Everyone worked together to turn a soybean field into the biggest thing to hit Middle Georgia since Sherman.

Today, were you to put a trumpet to your mouth on a sidewalk, you’d need a permit. A neon sign is unheard of on Cherry Street. The 567 Cafe’s move to a bigger space downtown, which they’ve rehabilitated themselves, has seen one issue after another. Remember “Bragg-Jam-Gate” last year with the alcohol ordinance? If cool things are going to happen here, we need to be working together to make it easier for things to happen.

History Hits the Stage: Two Magical Musical Tours

ake a trip to two unique times in America, complete with live performers, fabulous music, and a heaping helping of history, all from the comfort of a seat in an air conditioned theatre near you!

Downtown at Theatre Macon, the story of the events that led to the signing of the Declaration of Independence springs to life in the Tony Award-winning musical “1776.” Not a dry recounting of historical fact, the show unfolds through the lives and characters of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and the other men (and their wives) whose ideas of liberty and freedom led to the laws that still govern us today. It’s hard to imagine their average age wasn’t much older than the average 11th Hour reader.

Jim Crisp directs the cast of 24 men and 2 women with music direction by Jim Penndorf. The cast is clothed in phenomenal period dress (all hand crafted by the amazing Shelley Kuhen), providing a detail which literally elevates productions to the next level and which is easily overlooked, particularly when a performer is knocking your socks off with their performance--+but do yourself a favor and just take a moment to appreciate the ornate duds and give thanks that modern fashion doesn’t dictate that we wear that today!

Across town, Macon Little Theatre sets its sights on the circa WWII big band era with the song and dance extravaganza “Swing!” The show opened on Broadway in 1999 during the Brian Setzer “Jump, Jive & Wail” craze, but this production marks its Central Georgia debut. Some of the most popular and danceable tunes from the 1930’s and 40’s, including “Boogie Woogie Bugle

Nearly two dozen dancers will jump, jive, swing, bounce, and otherwise defy gravity in some of the most technically challenging and high energy choreography to hit a midstate stage in a decade. “Swing!” is directed by Sylvia Haynie with music direction by Laura Voss and choreography by Northside High School resident dance diva, Jenny Carroll, who also appears in the show.

These singers and dancers will amaze you and have your toes tapping.

“1776” makes history onstage at Theatre Macon, July 9 – 24, with performances on Friday & Saturday at 8 p.m., Wednesday & Thursday at 7:30 p.m., and a Sunday matinee on July 11 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 general admission, $18 for seniors and $15 for students. 1. Vintage Rock n Roll Magazines- I collect these from the 70s and 80s. Then I get to pretend like I'm in the rock n roll hay day!

2. Givenchy lipstick in Fabulous Rouge- This is my favorite lipstick of all time! It smells like roses, and is the perfect shade of red!

3. Metallic Pink Betsey Johnson Bow ShoesI saved my money for months for these bad boys. They are completely ridiculous!

They have Marilyn Monroe's face on the bottom, so I've only brought myself to wear them out on the concrete once though!

4. Vintage Las Vegas Scarf- I found this at a thrift store. I love Las Vegas memorabilia from the 50s and 60s!

5. Pink Flamingo Postcard- I found this at an antique store in Florida. I just love pink flamingos!

6. Records- You can't go wrong with a sweet mix of Hair Metal, Hawaiian Surf Music, Dolly Parton, and Glam Rock!

7. Zsa Zsa- She is my BFF and greatest companion! I used to take her around in one of those dog carrier bags when she was younger, but started to kinda feel like a tool. Now she just walks.

9: Rhinestone Pin- This rhinestone pin used to say "Rock", but it broke and now says "Rod"! I was so happy when I realized it, and I love it even more now, because of my endless love for Rod Stewart...I think it's a sign!

ecollections of the Second Atlanta Pop Festival tend to begin one of two ways.

Attendees either talk first about the music, notably the Allman Brothers Band and Jimi Hendrix -- homecoming kings because of their Macon ties -- and others who provided the ecstatic, note-bending soundtrack of a revolutionary era when jam sessions carried real consequences.

Or their nostalgia starts with the nudity, that tableau of bare bodies, capering, skinny-dipping, and rutting unselfconsciously among the pecan trees. “This was the only time I've ever seen a naked, pregnant woman riding a motorcycle - looked about eight months along,” someone calling himself “Papa” marveled on one of the many chatboards that have sprung up about the festival.

Either way, the party known locally as the Byron Pop Festival, which marks its 40th anniversary July 3 to 6, was cataclysmic.

A crowd ranging from 200,000 to 600,000, depending on the source, converged on the Middle Georgia Speedway for an event billed as the “Woodstock of the South,” the largest public gathering in the state’s history before the 1996 Olympics.

Traffic was backed up for more than 100 miles, all the way to the Varsity in Atlanta.

Tickets for the festival were priced at $14, but organizers eventually shrugged and

threw open the gates after the crowds started tearing down the plywood fences. Drug bazaars and O(ver)D(ose) tents reportedly lined the pathways, with bemused Georgia State Patrolmen looking on, realizing they were simply, overwhelmingly outnumbered, albeit lovingly. The answers were not so much blowing in the wind as suspended in the soup-like humidity, so revelers took to the creeks, and a water-truck, manned by “some ol’ naked guy in a fireman’s helmet” helpfully hosed everyone down, says Michael Pierce, a festival volunteer, adding, “I don’t think he was a real fireman.”

Fittingly, here, in a town named for poet Lord Byron, in the “Peach Capital of the World,” the Summer of Love ripened in a 104-degree miasma of sex, drugs, and rock ’n’ roll -- Southern style.

“It was a new world,” says Pierce, an artist still reeling from the experience. “It was a new day. When you see half a million people peacefully gathered in one place, not giving a shit, that’s a whole, huge nation of people.”

And their agape-inflected priorities are easy enough to spot in the old photos that show glassy-eyed, beatific faces trailing corn-silk hair and, well, just “trailing.” These images from the sweaty navel of Georgia happily counteract others in the region’s “They Shoot Hippies, Don’t They?” slide-show of paunchy sheriffs and Klansmen; the “Easy Rider” gunman with the goiter blossoming poisonously on his neck; and the state’s bantam-rooster, segregationist governor who decried the festival as “one of the worst blights that ever struck our state.” >> PAGE 14 11thHourOnline.com

“It was a strange mix of all kinds of people -- hippies, rednecks and wannabes. I was just out of high school and was one of the wannabes then, with very short hair,” says local Macon artist Michael Pierce.

That transformation was heralded by the Maconbased band that opened and closed the festival, the Allman Brothers, a proudly integrated outfit that earned a standing ovation just by tuning up. In keeping with the established fertility rites of such occasions, moments before the Brothers commenced, a woman in the crowd gave birth. (The naked one riding the motorcycle? Who knows? If you were born at the Byron Pop Festival, please contact us.) During one set, rain began to fall, and the roof over the stage collapsed. Instead of stopping the show, the group’s indefatigable rhythm section plunged into a drum solo.

“The thousands of kids greeted them like heroes,” writes Scott Freeman in Midnight Riders. “It had started out as a sort of homecoming; it ended as a coming of age for the Allman Brothers Band.”

Thus was the world introduced to a newly minted category of music called “Southern Rock,” which united the yin-and-yang sounds of its long-divided birthplace.

The lineup also included Terry Reid, B.B. King, Procol Harum, The Chambers Brothers, Poco, Grand Funk Railroad, Captain Beefheart, Ravi Shankar, Ten Years After, Johnny Winter, John Sebastian, Mountain, and Spirit, among others.

“For me, the most memorable performance was Richie Havens greeting the sunrise with ‘Here Comes the Sun,’” says Atlanta resident “Big Al” White. “We all were groggy and exhausted by that point, dawn was breaking, and it was just a beautiful, peaceful moment.”

The scene that most indelibly entered the era’s iconography, though, was Jimi Hendrix doing his hairraising take on “The Star-Spangled Banner,” a declaration of independence that Francis Scott Key never would have dreamed of. It seemed to announce: God bless funky, freaky America!

According to music lore, Hendrix had “people” in Middle Georgia, relatives he visited, as well as his onetime bandleader, Little Richard. The comet-like entertainer, who would die of an overdose a couple of months later, reputedly learned his pyrotechnic guitar moves from Macon’s Johnny Jenkins, who also was prowling the Byron festival, decked out in American Indian garb -- one of the many marketing ploys of promoter Phil Walden.

Not everyone hailed from the counterculture. An article dated July 5, 1970, from The Athens BannerHerald reports: “There are plenty of ‘long-hairs and hippies’ in establishment terminology, but it appears that by far the vast majority of the persons around the festival are representative of middle class-and-up Americana.

Most of the guys could easily fit into a River Road or South Lumpkin Street fraternity in Athens. … And, among those with shirts or blouses on, there's a good sprinkling of fraternity and sorority letters.”

White remembers the gawkers with annoyance.

“The only thing that seemed a little ugly to me was the rednecks who turned out to leer,” he says. “Some

people came just to nail a hippie chick or take their picture, but overall it was a lovey-dovey atmosphere of peace, fun, and music, with no violence.”

A few guys in John Deere caps hovered around a creek, placing bets on “who was a natural redhead,” recalls Don Robbins, then a naive optometry student who thought he “somehow had landed on the French Riviera, but it was…Byron? Anyway, I never sensed any animosity toward the long-hairs. The farmers were in awe of the hippies.”

Adds Pierce, “It was a strange mix of all kinds of people -- hippies, rednecks and wannabes. I was just out of high school and was one of the wannabes then, with very short hair.”

Some social workers had recruited him to work in the O.D. tents.

“They stayed full,” says Pierce, who grew up in Macon. “Mostly it was a matter of comforting people by sitting with them. Sometimes we had to physically hold them down. I asked one of the volunteers, ‘Why are people flipping out like this?’ He told me to walk over to the purple tent and find out. The guy there asked for a dollar and then handed me a pill. Before I even left his tent, I was airborne.”

The pecan trees filled up with cats, he says with a laugh. “And there were guys in Army fatigues, like Castro. Firecrackers went off, and I thought: THE REVOLUTION HAS BEGUN! Then I heard Jimi Hendrix. I became ‘experienced,’ you know? That was the lift-off date for my life.”

Pierce eventually found his way to San Francisco, where he worked in a tofu kitchen.

So the Byron Pop Festival produced a new archetype: the Southern hippie. The magnolia-petaled flower children combined their flair for backwoods hell-raising, honed at honky-tonks and juke joints, with progressive ideals of social justice, all packaged -- most of the time - in genteel manners. They did not have to go “back to the land” because they had never left, and, just as Gregg Allman ate soul food to lube his vocal cords, they usually rejected macrobiotics in favor of pork.

“Such decadence!” says Bobby Whitlock, a keyboardist who played with Eric Clapton and lived for awhile in Macon to record at Capricorn Records. “We drank a lot of beer and ate a lot of barbecue and greens -the barnyards were not safe from us. I once made a B.L.T. sandwich with psilocybin mushrooms big as my hand.”

It proved a seductive way of life. “As the scene grew, just about every redneck grew his hair long,” says Pierce, whose smoke-colored hair grazes his collar, “until it became hard to differentiate between them and us.”

All of those Byron-inspired, Samson-like strands combined probably would stretch around the globe.

“We may have felt like freaks, but now we knew we weren’t the only freaks,” writes Mark Kemp in Dixie Lullaby: a Story of Music, Race and the Beginnings in a New South. “I didn’t realize it at the time, but the feeling of community … was the beginning of a healing process - in me and in many Southerners of my generation - that continues to this day.”

Or, as Pierce points out, while tinkering with his didgeridoo, “There are plenty of people still experimenting with the experiment that began then.”

Ignorance is Bliss

Not you, you might be thinking. You see it like it is and tell it the same way. You’re not like Everybody Else. A sharp tack, not easy to fool... And that dear reader is denial.

he story was right out of the Stupid Criminals File. A man robs a bank in full view of the security cameras. He is undisguised. He is also five-six and 270 pounds rather recognizable, and within one hour of his image being telecast, he is indeed recognized and arrested. When questioned, he seems stunned that he was actually caught on film. Yes, he knew the cameras were there, but he’d protected himself. “I used the juice,” he says.

Apparently, this was his clever plan.

Somewhere in all the chit chat that criminals engage in at criminal cocktail parties, someone told him that rubbing your face with lemon juice renders you invisible to video cameras. And he believed it.

As much as we’d like to think we have nothing in common with this chap, we all do. We are all prisoners of our worldview. We each construct a coherent reality to live in, but it comes at a cost.

In short, we’re all living in denial of some kind. Maybe not as extreme as the citrus-faced would-be invisible man, but equally as impossible to break through.

It comes down to a simple truth, we are all in denial. Not you, you might be thinking. You see it like it is and tell it the same way. You look for evidence in fact and truth, even hard truth. You’re not like Everybody Else. A sharp tack, not easy to fool and certainly not prone to self-foolery.

And that, dear reader, is denial.

Neurologists describe something known as the Dunning-Kruger Effectour incompetence masks our ability to recognize our incompetence. David Dunning describes it thusly: “When you’re incompetent, the skills you need to produce a right answer are exactly the skills you need to recognize what a right answer is.” Incompetent people don’t have this skill, and their incompetence prevents them from acquiring it.

Dunning first conceived this idea

when reading the story about the misinformed bank robber. If this man was too stupid to be a bank robber, Dunning reasoned, perhaps he was too stupid to realize he was too stupid to be a bank robber? In other words, did his stupidity actually isolate him from a sense of his own stupidity?

This explains a lot about what’s wrong with the larger machinations of the world today. And the smaller ones too.

Despite factual and statistical evidence to the contrary, we hold to some cherished fallacies. We think we can talk on cell phones and drive safely. We think the perils of global climate change are exaggerated. We think that we don’t have to change the way we live and eat and drive, that somehow boycotting BP is the sole measure of response required of us as tar balls and dead dolphins wash up on the Gulf beaches.

Other people smarter than I am have reached a consensus on these issues.

Other people have looked beyond their individual deniability, checked out their truth with their peers, and arrived at a perspective that holds up no matter the viewpoint of each individual.

It’s this connection that makes the difference. No man, no woman, is an island. We have to check in with each other on a regular basis. In Twelve Step groups, this is what we do. In religious gatherings, this is what we do. In coffee klatches and committee meetings and

Take a Stand July 20th

s Georgia’s primary election draws nearer on July 20th there will be more choices on our ballot than in any election in recent memory. Statewide there is no incumbent Governor, Labor Commissioner, Public Service Commissioner, School Superintendent, Agriculture Commissioner, Attorney General or Insurance Commissioner on the ballot running for reelection. The primary ballot, especially on the Republican side is jam packed with candidates, nine of which are running for Insurance Commissioner to replace John Oxendine who is running for Governor and has held the position since 1994. I’d like to tell you about one of those candidates: Maria Sheffield.

Maria is a Middle Georgian, who was raised in Wilkinson County. Her mother, a native of Bibb County, was a nurse who was killed by a hit and run driver when Maria was 15 years old. Unfortunately, her father, who was a native of Laurens County, passed away from cancer 10 years later. Rather than let adversity get her down, Maria earned a BA in Political Science and a Master of Public Administration from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville as well as earning her Master of Business and Juris Doctorate at Georgia State in Atlanta, all by the age of only 25. Maria was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 2000 as well as being

I don’t know how we got into a place where we cherish our ignorance, where we’re proud of what we refuse to know. I see this especially in higher education, where students come to class believing they know everything they need to, that classes are just hoops to jump through using as little effort as possible. Some people are mighty invested in this mindsetafter all, it keeps the machine running efficiently.

So how do we move beyond our own ignorance? Admitting it is the first step. We then have to open ourselves to all the ways of knowing that we haven’t even considered. In short, we have to think about all the things we don’t know we don’t know.

That means hanging out with people who don’t live like we do and don’t think like we do. It means expanding our horizons to places where we might be uncomfortable. And it means letting go of some of the cherished delusions we hold dear, the things that we use to prop up our daily lives and philosophies.

Think about all the places where you smear lemon juice on your face. Think about maybe giving that up. It will be hard for a while. But I mean really, won’t it be nicer without having to squint, eyes burning, skin on fire, at a self-fabricated illusion?

She will do everything she can to protect and help the Georgia insurance consumer while holding all insurance companies that do business in Georgia accountable.

Over the next several years, the federal government will be enacting Obamacare in Georgia as well as across the nation and the office of Insurance Commissioner will grow in importance every step of the way.

Georgians deserve someone who is not only confident in their ability to fight Obamacare but who is also competent enough to do so. I hope that you agree with me as in my opinion I feel that Maria Sheffield is that person.

L

ast summer I went to New York City to meet with my literary agent. After spending a couple of hours discussing my then-current writing project, toward the end of the meeting he asked casually, “Do you have anything else?” I replied that I had an old truemurder tale from Macon that I hadn’t touched in several years and gave him just a quick overview of the story.

Registering only mild interest, he said he was about to leave for the beach (the publishing world operates on an elevenmonth schedule; if you are not ensconced at some terribly elegant ocean address in August, it is best to stay indoors so no one will learn that you aren’t among the chosen few). He instructed me to send him what I had written to let him look it over. Two weeks later, my agent called from his vacation and said, “Drop your project and get back to the murder story.

What sort of tale could elicit such a quick response in a notoriously-slow industry? A bi-racial, bi-sexual murder in pre-Civil Rights Macon, complete with kidnapping, forged wills, commitment to the insane asylum in Milledgeville, a cross-burning by the Ku Klux Klan, the possible murder of a loud pet parrot, interracial homosexual coupling, the fattest woman in the world, and the brutal murder of a Shirley Hills matron while her husband lay in a local hospital bed. And every bit of it true. In fact, if I had written it as fiction, no one would believe me. As my generous law school classmate, television personality Nancy Grace, says of the story, “With characters so deceptive, it takes a sleuth to identify pure evil.” She calls my book “a race to the finish!”

Chester Burge was the last link to the proud Dunlap family whose mansions dotted College Street. In fact, two of them – the old “Beall’s” restaurant and Jack Caldwell’s house – still stand, as well as the residence of the family sire on High Street. Only three days before the last Dunlap daughter died at Chester’s home, she changed her will to benefit him and his family. There was no autop-

sy, and the ensuing will dispute (which brought to Macon the handwriting expert in the baby Lindbergh kidnapping case) was among the biggest Macon had ever seen.

Chester quickly became the biggest owner of Macon’s substandard “shotgun” houses that he rented or sold to unsuspecting blacks and poor whites. He bought a mansion in Shirley Hills and began his attempt to scale the heights of social Macon.

Notoriety was never far from Chester, however, and reams of court documents testify to the number of times he was involved in protracted litigation.

His personal reputation matched his litigiousness. On the night of May 11, 1960, as Chester lay in the Macon Hospital recovering from a double hernia operation, his wife was strangled in their home after a violent struggle. The Burges’ seven year-old grandson was asleep in his room down the hall but heard nothing.

The next day Chester was carried on a stretcher to see the murder scene where he helped authorities decide that it was a failed robbery attempt. Within days, however, police began hinting darkly at other motives. Finally, after a month-long investigation with few leads, Chester was arrested for his wife’s murder. And the motive? Because, the police said, his wife “interfered with his private life.”

For a great deal of money, Chester was able to secure the services of the same two attorneys who the year before had prosecuted Anjette Lyles for what was, until the Burge case, Macon’s most

famous murder. In addition to Macon’s morning and afternoon newspapers, both Atlanta newspapers covered the trial along with constant radio bulletins from the courthouse. Prosecutors told the twelve white men of the jury that they could prove Chester was in his home the night of the murder. They even promised to produce an eye witness. Surprises and heated arguments littered the trial, and each day brought headline news to every doorstep in middle Georgia, including the revelation that Chester’s own mother (who lived with him and his wife) testified against him. Most thought the trial’s outcome – Chester’s death in the electric chair - was a certainty but, like so many assumptions concerning Chester Burge, they were wrong. Chester was then tried for sodomy after his black chauffeur – and lover – was offered immunity to testify.

The remaining members of the Burge family were left to try and escape the onus of Chester’s name. It will come as little surprise to learn that they were only partially successful. Savannah was made world- famous by Midnight in the Garden of Evil, and that fact-based story was written as fiction. A Peculiar Tribe of People: Murder and Madness in the Heart of Georgia is fully-documented as a nonfiction page in our history. While it may have a few passages that will make the reader wince in self-recognition, I can only quote President Jimmy Carter who calls the book, “a fascinating tale of murder and deception.”

So let’s do a step by step rundown. Soulja was fire on the red carpet with his new hit Pretty Boy Swag! I predict soon enough they will be doing the Pretty Boy Swag at Bragg Jam! I know I am spinning it that night! Kanye West opened up the show with his strong track POWER.Young Money showed out for sure and we knew Drake & Nicki would walk away with awards. The best performance has to go to Chris Brown doing his tribute to Michael Jackson! We all love to see the underdog make a comeback, and he did! Throughout history we have seen our favorite artists get in trouble and rise again.

Whistling indie star Andrew Bird has teamed up with sculptor and inventor Ian Schneller on a sound sculpture called "Sonic Arboretum", which will come to New York's Guggenheim Museum on August 5. Schneller, formerly of the 80s experimental indie band Shrimp Boat, has built an army of various-sized horn speakers shaped like old-fashioned Victrolas, which will be arranged into an "ecosystem" on the Guggenheim's rotunda floor.

On August 24, Barsuk will release The Orchard, the new album from Syracuse indie poppers Ra Ra Riot. And with the album's release looming, the band will spend the next few months playing an insane number of dates. Before the album drops, they'll play some Japanese shows and a few festival dates. And once that release date arrives, they'll spend a few months solid touring North America. The band will make its way to our neck of the woods in late fall: 11-01 Birmingham, AL - Workplay Theatre, 11-02 Atlanta, GA - Masquerade, 11-03 Asheville, NC Orange Peel

The Bibb Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest, involving suspicious activity. On Saturday, May 22, 2010 around 3:00p.m., an older white male, approximately 5 feet 9 inches in height and weighing close to 200 lbs, approached an eight year old boy at the First Presbyterian Day School on Calvin Drive. The older white male suspect was driving a silver four door station wagon or small S.U.V. type vehicle. The suspect asked the child to help him move a mattress. He told the child that he would give him $20.00 if he would go with him to move the mattress.
