EXCLUSIVE, ALL-INCLUSIVE GUIDE TO BRAGG JAM

JULY 18 - AUGUST 1, 2014

Pub Notes

by brad evans bradevans11@gmail.com

The first show I’m going to hit at this year’s Bragg Jam will be Razzy Bailey. The “Midnight Hauler” is back in Macon and there is no way I’m going to miss it. That starts at 5:45 and I’ll definitely stay for an hour or so. After that I’m going to travel down to the Hummingbird, where Lee Baines III and The Glory Fires will be kicking up their set at 6:30. I had a great time interviewing Lee and I definitely want to check the band out. You can read the interview on page 20. After that, I’m going to head down to the Buckley’s reunion at the Capitol. Some of us cut our Bragg Jam teeth listening to the namesake’s band, and I’m looking forward to hearing some of those songs played live again. That show starts at 7:45, plenty of time for me to watch before I go see a little bit of Boots and Kats on the 11th Hour Stage at Roasted at 8:30. I’ll probably just step in there for a bit, and walk across the street to Crazy Bull to see some of Travis Denning’s set at the Crazy Bull, which will be in full swing since he starts at 8:00. Then I’m going to run over and try to catch the end of The Empire Strikes Brass set before it ends at 9:45. After that mad dash, I’ll need some rest and I’ll go check out the Kopecky Family band at the 567 which starts at 10:15, then Royal Thunder at the Wall, and plan on ending my night, if I make it this far, with AJ Ghent at the Midtown Key Club at midnight. There is no way all of this will happen, but it’s the time of year when we look forward to trying to experience Macon’s biggest music festival. It’s Bragg Jam!

15days BEST BETS

Starting 10 a.m. on July 26, there will be living history camps and a battle reenactment in commemoration of 150 years gone by at the Ocmulgee National Monument. Wayne Dobson and his wife will be dressing the part.

The Battle of Dunlap Hill Civil War Re-Enactors make camp at Ocmulgee National Monument The Battle of Dunlap Hill was fought in Macon Georgia on July 30, 1864. This battle resulted in the firing on what we now call the Cannonball House. Union General Georgia Stoneman set out from Decatur Georgia to free Union Prisoners of war held at Camp Oglethorpe in Macon and Camp Sumter at Andersonville. With 2104 officers and men, and two pieces of artillery, Stoneman moved down the railroad, inflicting as much damage as possible along the way. As the Federals approached Macon, the fighting intensified, and led to the Battle of Dunlap Hill. This battle will be recreated at the Ocmulgee National Monument in commemoration of 150 years gone since it happened. Starting at 10 Am on July 26, there will be living history camps and both Confederate and Union demonstrations. Among those dressing the part for this living history event is Wayne Dobson, a life-long resident of Macon who has been taking part in such re-enactments since 1989. Wayne cites his love of history, especially the history of the War Between the States, that led him to get involved with demonstrations like this. Wayne says “I love every last drop of the experience: the places we go, times of sleeping on the ground (in all kinds of weather), the long marches (14 miles in 3 hours at Jonesboro), period foods, the uniforms, I love it all.”

Wayne is retired from the industrial supply business, and is a freelance writer in his spare time. So it’s easy to see why the romance of war has captured his imagination and led him to participate in these events. For the last 15 years, he has been working on a Novel called Macon to Manassas, centered right here in Macon. He’s also a musician, and loves to volunteer his time at places like The Ocmulgee National Monument, Jarrell Plantation, and the Cannonball house. The coolest “battle” he’s ever taken part in was the 135 Battle of Antietam, Maryland. “I loved Gettysburg, Shiloh, Spring Hill, Nashville and so on but most everyone who has been in the business over the last 20 plus years would pick Antietam (or Sharpsburg, as the South called it.)” Wayne and his friends are looking forward to taking part in the Battle of Dunlap Hill, and helping Macon residents remember the part that the Ocmulgee National Monument played in the War Between the States. Wanye left us with a final thought, “ A soldier from the War wrote his mother and said, ‘Oh, Mama, the sights my eyes done seen’ - I often feel that way - we have seen so many things - truly visions from the past. Most of all I am able to honor my Confederate ancestors but I enjoy it even when I’m asked to portray a Union Soldier.

5:30-6:15 The Hugs Self-described as “New-town with a little doom-wop thrown in, sugar-punk spread evenly throughout, with a slight tinge of psychadelia-leaning-post-garagerocksurfabilly. Or indie”, the band has been winning over crowds in their hometown of Milledgeville and Atlanta over the past year. Bragg Jam will mark their debut in Macon.

6:15-7:30 Bombadil Beautifully textured folk-pop via North Carolina. Currently signed to Ramseur Records, the group was featured by Music Ambassadors: Macon in late 2013 and will be making their BraggJam debut at the upcoming Festival.

6:30-8:00 Lee Baines III and the Glory Fires These ‘Bama boys recently signed to Sub Pop and currently have their new album, Deconstructed, streaming at NPR. Due out May 26th, NPR says of the album, “This is political music, but it’s also here to party. The Glory Fires’ members understand that rock’s garage is big and full of hidden treasures: Boogie, funk and swamp blues mix with hardcore and classic British snot in their songs.”

5:45-7:15 Razzy Bailey, The Homecoming Show The chart-topping country singer returns to Macon for a special home coming show at Bragg Jam. Razzy Bailey lived in Macon during the 70′s before heading to Nashville to record #1 tracks like “Loving Up a Storm” and “I Keep Coming Back”. Welcome home!

For fans of The Strokes, Dr. Dog, etc.. 11:30-12:15 Good Graeff “Twin Power!” Fronted by sister Brooke and Brittany Graeff, the band has been writing and recording together for the past ten years. 2013 saw a number of major successes for the band with signing to Madison House for booking representation, performing at dozens of festivals, and working on their soon to be released new album. International Friends President Harry Truman is rightly credited with our modern U. S. policy to support foreign governments with aid in order to keep them within our sphere of influence. The Marshall Plan closely followed those efforts when more than $13 billion went to rebuild nations recovering from the devastation of World War II. Although both initiatives were fighting against communism, today those policies continue in the face of many other forms of threat as communism slowly dies a lingering death.

As we’ve seen in nations from Viet Nam to Egypt and Afghanistan, it’s not enough to topple a repressive regime; the real test comes in discovering whether the new government can adequately address its citizens’ needs, let along their desires. Budding democracies need more than money if they hope to survive. That’s why we send “advisors” in addition to dollars while hoping to engender some form of gratitude – or at least a benign lack of hostility – from the new governments. Certainly the argument can be made that we should spend more of those dollars on domestic challenges, but there doesn’t seem to be a groundswell of support to cut off our generous foreign aid. Two of the newer initiatives of the U. S. State Department are the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program and the Thomas Jefferson Scholarship program. Both operate on the belief that someone who spends at least a year here living among us in our college system will be far less likely to oppose the United States in the future. At the same time, however, no one wants to support “home grown terrorism” so our State Department carefully chooses anyone it recommends for these programs, examining their background, their families, and their aspirations for the future. Recently Central Georgia Technical College has been in discussions with our U. S. State Department about hosting some of these academic visitors. It may surprise you to learn that CGTC has one of the best English As a Second Language (ESL) programs in the state. Having operated successfully for 13 years, CGTC currently is serving almost 500 students this year in 23 languages from Arabic to Urdu – all with only 10 teachers and one coordinator (who is herself fluent in Korean, her native language). Since one of the requirements to participate in some of these programs is a minimum of 10 years of ESL experience, CGTC is one of the few eligible institutions and now has opportunities that others can only envy. After the “Arab spring” that toppled several middle-eastern governments, the U. S. was left wondering how our own nation would be viewed by young people in those countries who played no part in the tensions that have existed between us for years. Making friends with the next generation seems a far better policy than continuing to allow discontent to cloud our

relationships. Fortunately, Central Georgia Technical College will play an integral role in that process. The Thomas Jefferson Scholarship program recently assigned to CGTC for one academic year four young college students from Tunisia. The northernmost country in Africa, Tunisia sits between the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlas Mountains, and the Sahara Desert. France has been its most pervasive influence and today almost 65% of Tunisians speak French even though Arabic is the national language. While it is a Muslim country, the vast majority of its citizens are religiously tolerant and do not accept a militant form of faith. Tunisia achieved independence from France in 1956 (when Sharia courts were banned) and, in 2011, a revolution overthrew an autocratic government allowing for Tunisia’s first free elections. The new constitution guarantees rights for women who currently hold more than 20% of seats in both chambers of parliament. The Tunisian landscape is memorable to anyone who saw the movie series Star Wars since all except episode 5 were filmed there (perhaps the most recognizable location is the Grand Dune where R2-D2 and C-3PO crash in the sand). Of the four students who will be living in apartments adjacent to the Macon campus for a full academic year, two are male and two are female; two have two years of college behind them while the other two have completed one year. In their rigorous application process, one of the four wrote, “I have always wanted to be one of the best in the field of Informatics Engineering. American universities are considered the best in this field and I always believed that in order to be the best you must learn from the best.” All four of the students have chosen CGTC’s excellent Computer & Information Science program and will complete one-year certificates specific to their career plans. They come highly recommended by their professors and their English proficiency level is high enough for them to be accepted as regular students. I am very hopeful that their experience living with us for a year will be a positive one. Perhaps they can teach us that dedicated young people, no matter their background or religion, can and do seek educational opportunities that will benefit us all. If you see them, please give them a Southern welcome!

Crisis In Texas: Can Rick Perry Show He's The Leader

The GOP Needs?

Back in the late 1970’s the Republican Party was in disarray with no clear frontrunner for the presidency emerging. Former Congressman John Anderson and Phil Crane, former Texas Governor John Connally, former CIA Director George Bush, Senators Bob Dole and Howard Baker and former

T

California Governor Ronald Reagan all were showing so signs of being any more of a leader than the sitting unpopular President Jimmy Carter.

14

hat all changed in one bright and shining moment on February 23, 1980 when Ronald Reagan stepped up and showed the world just what he was made of. Coming off of a narrow loss in Iowa at the hands of George the Elder Bush, Reagan’s campaign was in turmoil. Bush was crowing that “Big Mo” was on his side and The Nashua Telegraph decided to invite the top two, Reagan and Bush, of the many candidates to debate three days before the crucial New Hampshire primary. Obviously unfair, the Federal Election Commission agreed as did all of the other candidates including Reagan, except for Bush. Reagan offered to pay half of the bill for the debate himself and asked Bush to put in the other half. When Bush refused, Reagan ended up paying for the whole debate so Reagan invited all of the other candidates to be a part of it. Only John Connally declined the offer. The night of the debate with the world watching Reagan and Bush sitting awkwardly at a table with the other candidates standing behind them, the moderator of the debate, Nashua Telegraph executive editor Jon Breen refused Reagan’s request to address the restless crowd saying to the sound engineer, “Turn off Mr. Reagan’s microphone!” With one statement, Ronald Reagan changed the course of history. By this point, Reagan became uncharacteristically upset, and with a look of anger mixed with determination and frustration snapped back, “I am paying for this microphone, Mr. Breen!” The debate went on with all candidates joining in, but for no reason as Reagan won the White House at that moment. Thirty-four years later, the Republican party of today has no clear frontrunner for the Presidential election of 2016 and appears to be in as much chaos as the pre-debate GOP of 1980. The candidates who are thinking of running are as exciting as Ben Stein moderating a spelling bee. Far away on the horizon of time, former First Lady, US Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stands waiting to pulverize whichever sacrificial lamb we offer up for her to feast on. Last week, Governor Rick Perry of Texas may be on the way to changing that. In the past nine months 57,000 illegal immigrants have flooded into Texas from Mexico, most of which are young people and children, the result of President Obama’s refusal to halt deportation of younger undocumented immigrants. Obama has been urged to visit the border by everyone including Perry, but has refused saying that going is “no more than a photo opportunity” and that he is “intimately aware” of the situation. His proof is calling for over 3 billion dollars in funding. With one report of over 1000 more

JULY 18 - JULY 31, 2014

illegals being detained every day, more than money is needed to stop the flood. Leadership and ideas are needed instead of a President who literally was within a few hundred miles of the situation in Austin, Texas for a Democratic fundraiser. But yet he says that going to the border is a photo-op? Upon Obama’s arrival in Texas, initially Perry refused to meet him at the airport for the ceremonial welcome and handshake. Perry went through with it and shook the President’s hand probably as an act of goodwill since Obama finally agreed to at least meet with Perry. Who could blame Perry if he had stuck to his guns though? Last week White House spokesman Josh Earnest quipped, “The truth is it’s hard to take seriously Governor Perry’s concerns.” Well Josh, it’s hard to take seriously a President who chooses to fundraise over lead. Perry has called the President out on this saying, “I'm pretty sure that if George Bush had said 'well I sent my FEMA director multiple times' he still would have been criticized greatly," Perry said. "Because you need to go. That's what governors do, that's what presidents do. When there are natural disasters, when there are crises like these, a president needs to be there to show the American people number one that he understands."Perry, sounding stronger and stronger every day, has also stated, “My message to President Obama is to secure this border Mr. President. Finally address this issue and secure this border.” Later he would say, “This is a failure in diplomacy. It is a failure of leadership in Washington, D.C.” When asked about the 3.7 billion that the President has asked for to help stop the flood of immigrants, Governor Perry states that he feels less than $100 million of those funds would actually go towards border security. He summed up with what a lot of Americans are thinking and feeling when he went on to remark, “It’s the same president that said Al-Qaeda’s on the run and I don’t know whether he’s inept, or there’s something else going on, as I’ve said before,” he said. “But the fact is, the border is not secure.” No Governor Perry, the borders are not secure and I hope that you as the Chief Executive of Texas can and will do something within your power to stop the bleeding while at the same time show the strength and leadership needed to lead the United States and take the White House back for the Republican Party. If he can learn to debate before the primary season begins, Perry may just be the one to lead the GOP out of the wilderness.

SCENE THE INTERVIEW.

SAM HUNT Hailing from rural Cedartown, Georgia, Sam Hunt is quickly becoming one of Nashville's most talked about young

talents. After finishing his football career as quarterback for the University of Alabama Birmingham, Sam made the

move to Nashville to try his hand at songwriting. Shortly after settling into the Nashville scene, he was given the

opportunity to write full-time for a publisher. Using the work ethic and discipline he accrued as a ball player, Sam

began to develop his craft and quickly gained recognition as a gifted songwriter. Sam made a name for himself in

the country music community co-writing Kenny Chesney's #1 single "Come Over", as well as upcoming singles

"Cop Car"/Keith Urban and "We Are Tonight"/Billy Currington. He is currently writing/recording songs for his debut

album due out in 2014. Sam Hunt is playing the closing set at The Crazy Bull for Bragg Jam. INTERVIEW BY CLINTON BRANNEN

What artists or songs inspired you growing up that may lead us back to your musical roots? There were a bunch of them. Most of them era wise were songs that would have been on the radio in the 90s. That was my main source for discovering music growing up. It was riding around in the car switching back and forth between the country stations listening to the radio. So a lot of those guys, all the way back to the early 90s like Alan Jackson and George Strait, Garth Brooks and then all the way to Travis Tritt, Randy Travis… Then a few years later when folks like Brad Paisley came along, Kenny Chesney and those guys. I listened to a lot of those guys, but I was more influenced by the song writing probably than the artists themselves. Those artists did a great job of conveying the song. Some of those artists were songwriters, but a lot of those songs came from the songwriting community in Nashville that I didn’t know existed until I moved up here.

When did you decide you wanted to make music a career? It probably happened sometime during my college years. I was in school down in Birmingham, and I was learning to play guitar. At the time, I didn’t think I really had any business playing for anybody else, so I just played for myself in the dorm room, learned to play, got a little better, got a little better and started messing around with writing songs. A lot of the songs I wrote early on were just parody type songs. I would just make up little rhymes and jungles about just messing around with my roommates and making up songs about each other. But that turned into something a little more serious and then got to a point where I was playing out for other people. You don’t really know if your music is going to connect with people until you play it for them. So when I realized that folks related and enjoyed it and appreciated it, I didn’t want to just sit in a room and play the songs to myself anymore. Music was meant to be shared, so I wanted to get out there and share the music I was making and get better at it. And that’s what I’ve been doing since then.

What song really put things into gear for you? “Make You Miss Me” was the first thing I put up on the

20 JULY 18 - JULY 31, 2014

Internet. I realize the power of the Internet because I, as a listener, found lots of great music through YouTube, but I had never taken advantage of it as an artist and that was the first song that I put up and was able to sort of gauge a reaction from that. Nobody knew who I was. I just wanted to share it with them and kind of get the thing going, get the music out there; that’s the most important part. You can tour, but if you don’t have any music available, nobody can find your songs anywhere. There’s really nothing to hold onto after they go to a concert. What are some of your songs that have been recorded by other artists? The most notable was “Come Over” by Kenny Chesney, “We Are Tonight” by Billy Currington, and “Cop Car” was a song that Keith Urban recorded. Those have been on the radio here in just the past couple of years. They’ve all come out around the same time.

Speaking of “Cop Car,” there seemed to be some controversy surrounding the song and it being “stolen” from you. Can you expand on that? That’s a long conversation that would take a lot of information that I’d have to sort of have to bring you up to speed on to really eventually make a point. It was just an unfortunate circumstance that happened a couple of years ago when we wrote that song. It’s just a long time done with now. I’ve definitely moved on since then and working on all of the new songs for the record and really focusing on getting that all dialed in. But those things come up. There will be things in the future that I won’t be happy with. I’m always going to try to do the right thing, be honest and fair with all the people that I work with. That’s really something that I’m going to hold as a standard for the camp that I work in and something I’m really going to try to be aware of as I choose the people I work with in the future.

How does the feeling of seeing a song move up the charts that was cut by another artist compare to seeing one that was recorded by you? It’s cool both ways. It’s a little different thing to have a song that I’m singing moving up the charts. They both contribute sort of to two different areas of my career. Songwriting was the

area that got me to this artist thing, and that was something that I really could appreciate and as it relates to my songwriting career when I would see a song on the radio that represented success. That meant that things were moving forward in that department. And even still at the time I always wanted to make a record, so that still contributed to my eventual opportunity to make a record, which is going on now. But when I hear a song of my own, that really supports and represents progress as an artist, so that’s something that’s sort of a whole different thing really even though they’re sort of tied together. It’s really a completely different thing as I’m learning, getting into it. So they’re both equally as exciting but in two different ways. When can fans expect your debut album from MCA Nashville? I’m pushing for it [later this year]. I’ve got a lot of people that I work with that have certain vantage points and strategies and ways of going about making sure we put the record out at the right time so it reaches the most people. But sooner is always better for me. I’ve been sitting on some of these songs for a long time. I’m ready to get them out there.

Are there a few songs on the album that you’re really excited about? Oh yeah, I’m excited about all of them. I’ve gotten to a point where I’ve had to pick and choose a little bit. I put out several songs on an acoustic mixtape last summer. Several of those songs will be on the eventual record. I wanted them to have a little more of a life than they did with just the acoustic mixtape. I decided to put a few of those on the record, and then I have a few new songs that haven’t really seen much of the light of day that I’m going to have on the record as well. There will be sort of a blend. What has been your favorite venue that you’ve played so far and where do you hope to play that you haven’t yet? There’s a place in New York called Gramercy Theatre that was probably my favorite place so far. This place out in Colorado that I was close to just a few weeks ago called Red Rocks is a place that I’d love to play one day. It’s a really cool venue. It has a great reputation.

What sets you apart from other artists and makes you who you are? I think I’ve lived a lot of relatable experiences that will hopefully connect people to my music, but I feel like I’ve lived a lot of unique experiences within that as well that will bring a unique perspective on things that we have all lived and hopefully I will be able to sort of shine my own unique light on a lot of life that will come out in these songs and give people a fresh view on some of the same ole stories and same ole things that have been written about and sung about for years. I think that will create a uniqueness that we’ll only be able to find out within my music.

What has been the most influential piece of advice that you have received so far? I don’t know if there was necessarily a quotable version of advice that I’ve ever received, but the thing that has stuck with me that has been the strongest that I’ve probably heard from several sources is that of faith and believing in something, especially if you really feel led to believe in that thing, whether it be in yourself, the people around you or in a goal.

I’m sure you don’t have many of them, but what would a typical day off in the life of Sam Hunt be like? Well, if I had more of them, I’d probably do a little more with the time I had, but since they’re few and far between I usually just sit down somewhere and just don’t move around too much. I play basketball a good bit. We just blew up a $50 pool out in the back yard, been floating around in it a little bit. There’s a creek down in Alabama that we got some tubes, went and floated down a couple days ago, had a good time with that. So I try to get back to doing all the summer things and all the activities that I did before I got so busy and into music. I used to do a whole lot of hunting and fishing, but I don’t really have time to do that much anymore.

6:15-7:30 The QuailDogs Atlanta-based folk-grass that are loved and highly regarded inside the 285 loop – and beyond. They’ll be making their Bragg Jam debut this year. 8:00-9:30-Seven Handle Circus The Ath-lanta-based bluegrass-influenced folk-rock that once randomly got invited by Mumford & Sons to open up their show return to Macon for Bragg Jam 2014 after a performance at Second Sunday in May that awarded them a standing ovation and encore set. 10:00-11:30 Packway Handle Band Some of the quickest pickers in Georgia make up the Packway Handle Band, often referred to by their fans as “Packway”. Based in Athens, the group of five plays and sings around one central microphone, same as players did many years ago. Packway is a Macon favorite and will definitely pull their weight 12:00-1:30 Back City Woods Some of Macon’s finest players make up Back City Woods, a “blue-grit” string band responsible for Around the Bend - released earlier 2013. These guys are no strangers to BraggJam and we’re looking forward to seeing them on the “big stage” this year.

8:00-9:30 Baatin and Top Secret The project of talented multi-instrumentalist Baatin, who frequently performs with Parliament Funkadelic. 10:00-11:30 Big Mike and the Booty Papas Longtime Macon favorites, Big Mike and company are widely regarded for their showmanship and musical talent. The band has been performing together since 1995. 12:00-1:30 AJ Ghent Band Often compared to Robert Randolph, AJ Ghent plays a rip-roaring lead slide guitar. When he’s not touring with his band, he’s working with Col. Bruce Hampton.

7:45-9:15 The Vegabonds With a swagger reminiscent of the Black Crowes and a tight musicianship that will have you drawing comparisons to everyone from Led Zeppelin to the Allman Brothers, Nashville-based rock band The Vegabonds are just getting started. A mix of different musical interests ranging from Pink Floyd to Kings of Leon laid the groundwork for the band’s debut album, Dear Revolution, and its follow-up, Southern Sons.” via the band’s bio. 9:45-11:15 Randall Bramblett Band As a talented singer, songwriter, and musician, Randall Bramblett’s career has spanned more than three decades and has led him to work alongside acts like Bonnie Raitt, Steve Winwood, Levon Helm, and Chuck Levell. His newest record, The Bright Spots, is out now on New West Records. 11:45-1:15 Benjamin Olsen and Dirty Rhythm The newest project of Benjamin Cummings, a local guitarist and songwriter. Expect fiery leads and heavy rhythm guitar.

TWANG

7:45-9:00 Matthew Hope Local singer/songwriter in the vein of Ryan Bingham/Will Hoge. Check out his single, “Golden Sunset Skies” on Spotify. 10:00-11:15 Wesley Cook Singer/songwriter Wesley Cook hails from Atlanta, GA but has spent his fare share of time touring around the South. Cook has been featured in articles in Rolling Stone, Georgia Music, Billboard and more. 11:45-1:15 Cranford Hollow Soulful rock ‘n roll via Hilton Head, SC, these guys busted their chops for years as “Cranford and Sons” before making the change last year due to a certain band with a similar name. It paid off for them – the band has been steadily touring for the last year and have a new album out.

that, dear reader, is fuckin’ awesome.

Date and Time: 6/22/2014, 8-11 p.m. Venue: 576 Poplar Street, downtown Macon Lineup: B3 (Macon), Profound Breadth (Sandy Springs), Black the Map (Clarksville, TN), Brandon Brains (Nashville, TN), Floco Torres (Macon) Cost: Donation

Prior knowledge of bands: “Raisin’ Hell” by Run DMC was the only tape in my 1990 Geo Storm for a long, long time. I own a fabulous gold and silver Run DMC shirt that I purchased at Rose’s years ago that I still sport with pride. Unfortunately for me, these things do not make me a hip-hop connoisseur but I enjoy Floco Torres’s music and prior to attending this show, he’s the only act that I was familiar with.

Attendees/venue/vibe: The history and the vibe of Grant’s Lounge is the stuff of legend. Google it if you’re not familiar with the back story and then stop by when you have the time. Due to touring schedules, the show was on a Sunday night, which is a difficult one for most concert-goers. That being said, in stark contrast to most shows, this one actually started on time and was over by 11. In short, if you skipped this show because you had to get up for work the next day, your reasoning for missing the show was flawed. Additionally, the crowd was crazy diverse. Young and old, black and white, all reveling in the sounds of local and touring underground hip-hop and

Picture two (L to R): Profound Breadth, Thoughts: Floco Torres, Black the Map, Brandon Brains B3 (Macon, GA): Promising young DJ from right here in Macon, GA. He had the unenviable privilege of starting right at 8 to a handful of people, but nothing as petty as a small crowd stopped this guy from giving it his all. Profound Breadth (Sandy Springs, GA): Young guy with lots of potential that gracefully performed a short set as the crowd began to build and comingle. Definitely interested in seeing and hearing more from this guy. Black the Map (Clarksville, TN): This guy’s built like an all-state defensive tackle who loves wordplay and pseudo-whiny vocals. I know it sounds like that. I’ve watched this guy grow over the last five or six a strange combination and I suppose it is, but it totally years and I swear he gets better with every performance. works and I’m not just saying that cuz’ the guy could He references cartoons, still likes dinosaurs, samples crush me like an empty can of PBR. Otis Redding and is not afraid to jump on a table to Brandon Brains (Nashville, TN): This was not his command your attention. Mark my words, this guy first time in Macon and it was immediately obvious that works too hard not to outgrow our scene, so check him he had some return customers. He immediately encourout while you still can. In related news, be sure to check aged the audience to join him on stage and promptly him out @ the Hummingbird (he’ll be performing with a draped a handful of fake snakes around his neck and full band) on July 25th for the Blue Indian/Field Note began stomping around the stage barking into a Shure Stenographers local showcase. super 55 mic (commonly known as the “Elvis microphone”) like a punk rock preacher at a misguided and Closing remarks: slightly profane tent revival, immediately creating an atmosphere that reminded me more of the punk shows of Though I do have a mild understanding of the difference between rap and hip-hop, I am far from an expert in the my youth, complete with crowd sing-alongs and banter field. I’m not gonna lie and tell you that I ripped up the with the audience in between songs (at one point he dance floor. I didn’t get on the stage with the performers, astutely pointed out that “shitty people are the ones that but I did have a great time and I suspect everyone else still listen to Creed”). Amen, brother Brains. that made it to the show did the same. This is your Floco Torres (Macon, GA): If you haven’t seen him music scene, Macon , GA. Get dirty. Dig the field. or haven’t seen him in awhile, you really need to fix
