MIDDLE GA STATE UNIVERSITY PRESENTS AIR SHOW, BALLOONS & TUNES AS PART OF HOMECOMING CELEBRATION

The first Heart of Georgia Air Show, part of Middle Georgia State University’s 2015 homecoming celebration, takes to the skies from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, on the Eastman Campus, which is east of Eastman on Georgia Highway 46, adjacent to the Heart of Georgia Regional Airport. The show, featuring aerobatic flying performances, is free and open to the public.

Scheduled to perform are Gary Ward, Greg Connell, Larry King and the Silver Wings Paratroopers. A “Kids Zone” and aviation-related displays and demonstrations are also part of the air show.

POA was born in 2011 and fuses rock, blues and at times pop. The members Abts, Carlsson and Anderson combine over three decades of writing recording and touring experience.

“Swell Party” Presented by Theatre Macon - Thru September 12, Intrigue, mystery, murder and comedy and you’re invited! It’s 1932, and it’s been a swell party to honor the return of the young R.J. Reynolds tobacco heir. His new wife, the Broadways star LIbby Holman and her eccentric “acting coach” are in tow. The only problem with the evening is young Smith Reynolds turns up dead. Based on actual events, this play takes a close, comic and entertaining look at what may have actually happened on that fatefu night at Reynolda, the Reynolds’ North Carolina estate. We discover that for Southerners, the truth isn’t neary as important as a good story.

You’ve probably seen him at the bus stop at the intersection of Brookdale Avenue and Vineville, twirling a sign with “Twang” emblazoned across it and dancing to whatever beat is living in his headphones at the time. In the summer, he’s usually wearing a safari helmet a la Teddy Roosevelt, but in the coming fall, he’ll become the Sherlock Holmes of Payne City, complete with hat, overcoat, and his ubiquitous Calabash Pipe. Or maybe he’s helped you carry some delicate piece of history through the maze that is Payne City Antiques, telling you his theory on the death of Otis Redding, and spinning yarn about the Dixie Mafia. I imagine that not a whole lot happens at that old Mill without Ralph Fambro knowing about it. I also imagine that any of us who frequent any of the businesses there are better off because of it.

Ralph was born in Cherokee, North Carolina, and migrated to Macon not long after, because his mother had some sisters here that they wanted to be close to. His father, a Cherokee Indian, wasn’t around much, and according to Fambro, often drank himself crazy. Ralph went to Ballard Hudson, for a while, and then moved with his mother and a few of his sisters to New York, where he played basketball and graduated high-school, and right after graduation, he joined the Marines.

“I was an athelete, and I took that mentality right into the Marines. The Few, The Proud, that’s how it was. You had to be perfect to be a Marine, and I was into that mentality.”

Fambro ened up in Vietnam, on a 12-man recon unit that would spend weeks at a time in the Jungle. One muggy morning, they got into a firefight and Ralph was hit in the leg. It was an injury that would get him home, a place that he wasn’t always sure he wanted to come back to.

“I had everything on me in Vietnam if I wanted to kill myself. And it was a hard time in my life. I thought about pulling the pins on those grenades strapped to me a few times. But I decided to fight to come home instead, and I’m sure glad I did. And by the way, those Navy Nurses, you know what they used to stop me from bleeding out? You know what they stuffed my wound with? Kotex. They had to use what they had.”

Fambro came back to New York where some of his sisters were still living, and was able to look past a lot of his bad experiences in Vietnam. He spent a lot of time in Spanish Harlem, learning to play percussion from a group of Puerto Ricans, who used trash

cans for drums.

“I used to go up there because the girls were so pretty, but I ended up hanging around and learning to play the congas. Back then, all I thought about was music, girls, and smoking a little herb.”

Ralph’s sister worked at the Apollo Theatre, and got him tickets to see Bob Marley, George Clinton and many others. “Bob was a cool man,” says Ralph.

The best show he remembers seeing was Jimi Hendrix during the Band of Gypsies Tour. He still carries around the t-shirt he bought at that show, and when you see him dancing on the side of the road in the mornings, that album, or some other classic rock and roll is more than likely what he’s listening to.

“Black people back then commuted with music. There was no color in music. We listened to it all the time. I listened to Led Zeppelin, Three Dog Night, The Allman Brothers, but I never saw anyone do it like Hendrix man.”

Ralph eventually moved back to Georgia, first Atlanta, then Macon, where he still has family. He worked odd jobs, until 15 years ago, when he first began working at Payne City Antiques, helping folks load their treasures, and helping out around the building. When Twang opened up a couple of years ago, Ralph was among the first to welcome them. And they welcomed him too, naming a sandwich after him.

“The Ralph is smoked turkey (just like me he said with a grin) and pimento cheese, and man it’s good,” laughs Fambro. “Ole Drew and Jerry they are good people, be sure to include that.”

So why the Sherlock getup? Why is Ralph a legend in Payne City. He gives the perfect explanation.

“It’s because I’m weird. I like weird things. Sherlock was a weird guy if you really look into him. Any just about any musician I’ve ever known is weird. I like living in my own world. It’s better that way. There are good demons, and bad demons, and you never know what kind of demons those around you are dealing with. That’s why I enjoy helping people. It’s way better to be weird and spread love, than to be straight and all pent up inside. A lot of folks came back from Vientnam with hate in their hearts. And they found people here with hate in their hearts too. But I was lucky that I was able to look past that, and find the light. And I’m going to keep going towards it until I’m gone.”

The Sheepification of America The United States has become a vast wasteland with millions of herds of sheep who

spend 90% of their waking hours being led to slaughter by social media or the main-

stream media. Seldom, if ever, does anyone have an original thought of their own but would rather jump on this bandwagon or that cause in an effort to feel important and wanted. I mean come on people... Look at the events of the last few weeks.

Some dentist pays a bundle of dough to go to Zimbabwe to go on a lion hunt and kills a lion that happens to be a “national treasure”. From all outward appearances, it seems that it was a legal hunt and if anyone should be held accountable it should be the guides that the dentist hired. Instead, celebrities such as Betty White, Mia Farrow and Bob Barker have become the shepherds of the sheep. Betty White has stated, “You don’t even want to hear some of the things I want to do to that man.” Farrow gave out the business address of the guy and Barker has been quoted as saying that he’s glad there is a bounty on the guys head. I’m not a hunter. I love wildlife and I love the outdoors. I just spent a vacation exploring the Midwest and saw hundreds of grazing bison and mule tail deer. I would never think of shooting them. But they’re animals. Cecil was a damned lion for crying out loud!

How come Betty White isn’t crowing at the top of her lungs over the recent revelations that Planned Parenthood is harvesting fetus parts of human babies? Why the hell didn’t Mia Farrow release her then-boyfriend Woody Allen’s address when he up and ran off with her adopted daughter and was accused of molesting their own adopted daughter? Why isn’t Bob Barker bitching and complaining about what the genocide that has been happening in Sudan, roughly 2500 miles north of Zimbabwe? The Price is Wrong…bitch.

Thanks to the feeding frenzy that the media continues to throw T-bone steaks to, the dentist’s office looks like a 70’s sit-in with a bunch of no working idiots protesting to shut the man’s business down and protesting with signs that call for his spending time in jail with no bail to him rotting in hell for eternity. I would be willing to bet that many of these same people spend their time with pro-abortion causes as well. Don’t you see anything a little ironic there?

In my last column I discussed the controversy surrounding the Confederate flag issue which is still picking up steam across the nation, once again fueled by social media and the mainstream press. Things start out with a few protestors in one location and end up as a national furor because a local news station has decided that it’s news, who in turn put the nonsense on television and on their website which evolves into shares on Facebook and Twitter which culminates in a passing of the propaganda from one sheep to the next. In the case of the Confederate flag, a picture was found with Dylann Roof holding one which automatically “made” it the most vile symbol on the face of the earth as millions of people passed the picture from one Facebook page to the next and the furor spread. The mainstream media picked up on the fact that Roof had pictures and a manifesto on a white supremacist website. The sheep followed and the flag was taken away.

In one of the few intelligent things South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham has ever said, Graham told CNN that “It’s him. (Roof) Not the flag.”

A few weeks later Muhammad Abdulazeez killed four Marines and a US Navy Sailor in Chattanooga. President Obama almost immediately labeled Abdul azeez “a lone gunman”, which technically is correct as no other person

helped him kill the five heroes; however, as the sounds of the shots were still echoing through the Lookout Valley, an Islamic Twitter account proudly tweeted, “O American Dogs..soon YOU will see wonders” #ISIS #Chattanooga. Somehow or another, mainstream missed that. In a good example of sheepification, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell interviewed one of Abdulazeez’ high school classmates a couple of days after the shooting. The classmate repeatedly told Mitchell about the fact the Abdulazeez had Islamic ties, however Mitchell was fixated on asking if Abdulazeez was a hunter or in her words, “What about guns? Did he hunt? Did he shoot? I mean, was that just part of smalltown Tennessee activity?” Never once did Mitchell try and follow up on the fact that Abdulazeez had Islamic ties, but did all she could to push her own anti-gun agenda. (Yes, Andrea Mitchell is a very well known anti-gun advocate. And the sheep follow…)

At that point, the sheepification will continue and lead shepherd Jeb “I’m My Own Man (But Thank God For Daddy and Grandpa’s Money!)” Bush will lead the flock into the field of clover, although we would be better off with at least 3 of the other candidates. I honestly think Carly Fiorina, John Kasich or Marco Rubio are better candidates but Bush has raised over $114 million for his race, while Fiorina, Kacich and Rubio have a combined total equaling roughly $25 million or about one-fifth of Bush’s total. He’ll outspend everyone just like Bush the Younger did and be the last man standing as the sheep will follow blindly.

I sincerely hope for our country’s sake, that the sheepification will eventually come to a standstill before HILLARY CLINTON

DONALD TRUMP

More sheepification is coming full throttle as we get closer and closer to another presidential election. The Democrat sheep are following the scandal ridden former first lady Hillary Clinton with a few stragglers daring to make a race of it and have wandered over to the “Valley of the Shadow of Death” known as Bernie Sanders, who has begun making inroads at waking up the blinded sheep following Shepherd Clinton. What will really be funny is if our Vice President, aka “The Human Gaffe”, Joe Biden decides to be Moses and lead another portion of the flock away from Hillary. If Hillary stays in and rounds up her little lost lambs, she’ll win the nomination, but there is one wolf in her valley that may be able to completely decimate her flock. The wolf is named Bengazhi and will be fed a warm supper of fresh meat with her denials of wrong doing while Secretary of State as well as what her now released email servers might show.

Now let’s jump over to the Republican party, where we too have sheepification going on has the main shepherd at this point remains to be former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who even after a very lackluster debate is in a solid second place to front-runner and flavor of the month billionaire Donald Trump. Trump has continued to say dumb things that endears him to the middle of the road Republicans who are flat tired of being politically correct and want change, no matter what that change is, so long as they can relate to it. Trump has one thing going for him that everyone else in the GOP race doesn’t

John Abernathy on why Mercer Football made him love Macon

Before being the first player to commit to Mercer’s football revival in 2012, John Garrett Abernathy – J G to his friends – had never been on Mercer University’s Macon campus. At first glance, that’s not necessarily a surprising fact. Mercer regularly attracts students from all around the country, and hosts a sizable group of international students every year. In fact, it is that first visit to the historic campus that usually convinces potential students to move the University to the top of their list. But JG had spent his formative years at Mount De Sales Academy, playing defensive end for the Academy’s football program, not even a quarter mile from the place where he would join his teammates as the long-snapper for the then newly announced team. He admits, “Mercer wasn’t Macon’s school…I wasn’t even thinking about going here. Even when they announced they were having a football team, I was like, yeah right, that won’t happen.” Before 2012, the last time football had been an official part of campus life was 1941, having been shuttered due to outbreak of World War II. When the University’s Board of Trustees announced the return of the sport in November of 2010, the school quickly began putting the plan into motion, hiring Coach Bobby Lamb, and beginning construction on the necessary amenities. Abernathy was part of the first recruitment class signed in February 2012, seizing the chance to be a part of the inaugural year for the new Bears football program.

really tiresome. I wasn’t sure it was going to be worth it”, he recalls. The first regulation game would not come until August 31, 2013 against Reinhardt College, a small liberal-arts college in Waleska, GA. The Bears would ultimately defeat the Eagles, who were also reviving their football program, 40-37. “Had we lost to them, there’s no telling what would have happened. We certainly wouldn’t have won ten games. That set a precedent that we knew what we were doing.” he contends. The young team would go on to prove that early assertion correct, completing the 2013 season undefeated at home with a 10-2 win-loss record, and clenching the NCAA Division I record for wins (10) by a start-up football program.

The Macon campus experienced a 28% growth in undergraduate enrollment from 2011 to 2015. Freshman enrollment jumped from 565 to 807 in the same time period, with Fall 2015 numbers expected to settle around 840. And this progress didn’t come at the expense of the school’s academic profile either, with significant increases in average high school GPAs, SAT and ACT scores. The school is currently building another freshman dormitory on campus, as well as overseeing the completion of loft buildings on Hardeman Avenue and Mercer University Drive that will also serve as student housing. And in that development, JG noticed the city that he thought he knew

began to change for the better. Macon began to take ownership of Mercer, as the school poured into the surrounding College Hill and downtown neighborhoods. Seeing the city come alive on football games, he says “Football is helping build downtown, which is helping make Macon better.” And he’s right. As the summer comes to a close, the tangible spirit of looking toward games days is beginning to awaken in the community. It is impossible not to look forward to the tailgates, spilling out into the ever-improving Tattnall Square Park, with the echo of the marching band warming up on campus in preparation for the game. Having spent the majority of his life here, JG admits, “I don’t feel like I live in Macon anymore…If I stay [here], I will never go back to living in North Macon.

It’s a better sense of community down here.”

The football players are hardly able to rest on this early success though. Coach Bobby Lamb has pushed the importance of the student-athlete from the very beginning of the program, calling for a 3.0 average for the football players. Abernathy contends “I had somebody tell me that if you are an athlete, you don’t have to work for your grades. And that really bothered me.” JG is currently in his senior year, and plans to continue on into a 5th year program to earn a Masters of Arts in Teaching. “I’m busy, and I know that if I have thirty minutes at night, I have to get something done . . . It keeps you disciplined, which is going to help you in the real world. There’s no doubt about that.” The team practices Monday through Friday

Every Mercer football game will be broadcast live and will begin with a pregame show one hour before kick off. Each Bears’ home game will also feature a one hour tailgate show with host Jason Hawk, which will air two hours prior to kick off. Fans can access the broadcast each Saturday on 97.3

during the season, beginning at roughly 6 o’clock each morning and finishing in time for morning classes.

Last summer, JG took advantage of the Mercer on Mission program at the University to visit the former Soviet nation of Georgia, working to create reconciliation between area Muslims and Christians, as well as meeting the needs of refugees from the ISIS takeovers in Syria and Iraq. The trip, which is heavily subsidized by Mercer, is one of many global projects offered by the school, and is open to all students at sophomore, junior and senior levels. JG remembers spending his time farming, helping build a boy’s boarding school, and cleaning out a graveyard that served as the final resting place for 17th century royalty. He also recalled a storm during his stay that flooded the city where he was staying, “ . . . a zoo flooded. All these animals got out. A hippo got out, lions and tigers got out, killed – I think – 6 people, left the city a wreck.” The most poignant moment of the trip however, was a word of gratitude from the bishop of the local church telling JG and his peers that “If in ten years, ISIS or the next radical Islam group comes through recruiting to kill American Christians, [the locals are] going to say, ‘You have no idea what you are talking about, because [we’ve] lived with these people, we know how good they are, what they did for us.’”

As a long snapper, John Garrett Abernathy will probably never be recognized as a superstar on the Mercer Bears football team. The position is a specialized one, seeing

duty during field goals, extra points, and punts. It is a position where the majority of fans will only notice your errors, where success only increases one’s anonymity. But in his underappreciated role, JG became the poster boy of this new breed of Mercer student who has formed over the past few years in correlation with the return of the football program. This new Mercer student recognizes the school’s symbiotic relationship with its home city, yet also understands the need for a global outlook. He understands the balance of academics, leisure, competition, and faith, and how those various aspects of student life can work in synergy, rather than in rivalry with one another. He realizes that his education should not only improve his own life, but should be a source of inspiration, service, and healing to others. JG looks forward to this year, citing that his occasional downtime at practice has given him a chance to evaluate his teammates, anticipating that “Our defense is playing incredible, the best I’ve ever seen. I don’t know that there’s anybody that can hang with [them].” But John Garrett currently has his eyes set further, realizing that his time at Mercer is coming to a close. He anticipates that he will follow in the footsteps of former Mount De Sales football coach, Robert Slocum: “I called [him], and asked him if he woke up happy every day. He said, ‘Absolutely.’ That’s all I needed to hear. I want to do what he did for me. I want to be the role model that he was to me for people that don’t have role models.”

Over the next 10 years, his crimes would land him in prison, to which he escaped five times, be put on America’s Most Wanted list, and is believed by some to have robbed over 60 banks. If this is true, that’s more than Jesse James and John Dillinger combined.

It took me a year to get Teddy to talk to me, and I’ve spent countless hours with him. The DA’s office has enough paperwork to choke a courtroom on him. So many people have asked me why I’m not writing a book. Well here is why.

Tell me a little bit about how you got into acting?

It was my first day as a Freshman in high school. It was a totally new school, as I was taken out of my previous one b/c of how bad I was bullied there. I finally had a new start. I remember telling a joke that got the whole class bursting into laughter. And after that I was hooked on entertaining. I would do impressions a lot and even improvise scenes with them, and eventually my friends encouraged me to audition for my first play…I immediately got a lead role. And that was that!

What were your thoughts when you first discovered Breaking Bad? Where has a show like this been all my life? Every episode was as addictive as the next, and I binged through 4 seasons in month to get me caught up with the current syndication. No show ever did that too me.

And when did you decide to break it down into a one man show? I truly believe Breaking Bad is the greatest TV show of all

What’s your favorite episode/scene from Breaking Bad? “Ozymandias” That’s when Walt’s house of cards (excuse the TV pun) comes crashing down, and it is the most intense episode I’ve every watched of anything.

time, and after it had aired it’s finale, I felt like I had a hole in my TV viewing experience, so I decided to put my comedy, acting, and impression skills together and keep the flame alive for everyone!

What was that process like? Excruciating. How does one cut down over 47 hours of complete genius for a one hours show?!

Well, after much editing and rewrites, I now feel confident that my show serves the storyline justice, while still being a gut-busting farce!

Favorite character on the show and favorite one to play? Jesse Pinkman, Bitch! Apart from having hilarious mannerisms and catch phrases, I also feel like he’s one of the most relatable characters of the show.

How many people travel with you for this? Well, I must confess, I’m not really a one man show…I have my amazing tour manger who gets me from point A to B! How many shows are you doing this year? By the time this year is up, I will have performed this show over 150 times just this year…wow, that’s taking a while to sink in.

“The King of Broken Hearts”

Jim Lauderdale is a guy who has won piles of Grammy awards and Americana awards. He has worked with Ralph Stanley, Bobby Bare, Elvis Costello and Robert Hunter. His current record is a collaboration with the North Mississippi All-Stars.

His songs have been recorded by George Jones, Patty Loveless, Solomon Burke, and George Strait. Jim writes songs that seem familiar, even if you’re hearing them for the first time. If you missed the Jim Lauderdale show at the Capitol Theatre on August 13th, you should be ashamed of yourself.

After working all day, I gobbled down my dinner and rushed down to the Capitol to catch the show, which started around 7:15. Serendipitously enough, I ran into Jim Lauderdale as I walked in, becoming his accidental door man. He casually shook my hand, said thanks, and moseyed on in to the theatre. My first thought was that the stage door at the back of the theatre had been locked, but then I noticed that he was coming in to see the opening act, Abby Owens. In retrospect, that really set the tone of the evening for me. Although Jim has won piles of awards throughout his career and worked with a laundry list of heavyweights in the music business, at his core, he is just a regular guy that enjoys his job. His job just happens to be writing great songs, collaborating with music legends and performing all over the world. I don’t know about you, but my guidance counselor never mentioned that career path to me.

Abby Owens casually states, “this song is about killin’ a man. It’s fiction,” with a twinkle in her eye before starting another tune. Anyone that has ever seen her perform (she did call Macon home for a spell and many of us were blessed enough to see her play on a regular basis during that time) will agree that her voice is (and has been) a force to be reckoned with. What immediately struck me was her guitar playing. Abby has been practicing. Her guitar playing has always been solid, but she now possesses a confidence in her gui26 AUGUST 27 - SEPTEMBER 10, 2015

tar playing that wasn’t there before. Her guitar playing easily fluctuated between subtle finger-picking to strumming her guitar with a force that proves she knows how to throw a punch, all with ease and precision. If you missed her at Bragg Jam and you missed this one, you should catch her the next time she’s in town.

Shane Bridges followed Abby’s set accompanied by fiddle player. Full disclosure: I missed most of Shane’s set. That makes me a terrible reviewer (deepest apologies Shane). Shane is a great songwriter, musician and performer that also happens to call Middle Georgia home. If you’re unfamiliar with his material, bust out your Googler and check it out. Please direct all complaints to our complaint box, which is out of order for the foreseeable future.

Great songs know no genre and need no more explanation than “that’s a great effin’ song.” Most songwriters strive to write one hit song. Jim Lauderdale has written more that I imagine even he can keep track of. I can’t claim that I knew much of his work going into this show, but I can say that I have started to fix that after going to it.

At some point during the set, Jim Lauderdale sang “I’d like to explain but here comes a solo…” just before…you guessed it a guitar solo. As trivial as it may seem, that one line summed up my experience during Lauderdale’s set. I found myself drawn between Lauderdale’s songwriting in action and his band (especially the interplay between his pedal steel player and lead guitar player, Craig Smith) in a relentless ping pong fashion. One need to look no further than his songwriting resume to establish credibility, but seeing it live with a full band really brings everything to life. At one point in his set, Jim Lauderdale called Macon “a magical place.” One that, like many greats before him, gave him “the mojo” to sit down and write some new material. He promised to do that after the show. I hope he did.

Born Waylon Albright Jennings, Shooter was playing drums by the time he was five years old and had already begun taking piano lessons, only to break them off and follow his own path to an understanding of the instrument.

Following in his father’s footsteps, but with his own feisty, scrappy sense of country, Jennings placed himself in a fine position to both explore that legacy and carve out his own. Now Shooter is on tour for the first time with his father’s original touring and recording band Waymore’s Outlaws!
