Let me be clear. When I expressed anger over five people getting shot at Grant’s Lounge a couple of weeks ago, and asked that the owners and promoters take a little responsibility for the safety of their patrons, that didn’t mean that I wanted the historic bar to disappear off the face of the earth. That said, if I had to choose between five more people getting shot there or it becoming a cute little French bistro, I’ll pick the bistro every time. Just because it has historic significance doesn’t give it a pass. Had this shooting happened anywhere else in Macon we’d be asking the same questions. Just across the street from Grant’s, The Crazy Bull has three, if not four times the capacity. They spend thousands on security and communications equipment to help ensure the safety of their patrons. They are instructed to call the police the moment an altercation begins. As a result, you don’t see them in the headlines. I don’t think the current incarnation of Grant’s Lounge plays any part in honoring its history, and if that’s what they want to do, then I say they should do it. If they want to continue on the route they’ve been on for the last several years, I think they have that right as well. But I think they should be held to the same standards as everyone else. Hire more security, inside and out. Install cameras. Close when the law says close. Five people getting shot at your club (or just outside of it) is a big deal. Act like it. That’s all anyone is asking. And if that’s too much to ask, then it won’t be anyone’s fault that Grant’s closes but Grant’s. I hope that they can find a way to do the right thing.

BY ANDREW ECK
On September 27, Macon will experience the first Corner Concert, a new local start-up concert series that brings together what so many folks love about Macon— great music in a historic urban setting. The band Saint Francis, a local favorite with a well-blended mix of soul and country, will headline after Macon’s own Widow Pills and Rewind Retry open the show. This month’s inaugural concert will be on the Mulberry Street parking deck, equipped for the occasion with a bar and limited seating for the 7:30 opener. Tickets are available at CornerConcerts.com. This one night has been a year in the making, and is poised to create a unique new downtown tradition. Musician and South Georgia-native Andrew Eck, who began planning Corner Concerts last fall, envisioned a way to showcase both Macon’s beautiful downtown character and unique local sound. These pop-up, monthly concerts will showcase several bands in a non-traditional venue—whether it’s an abandoned warehouse, historic storefront, local park, or the top floor of a parking garage, where this month’s concert will be held. The venue for the September 27 concert overlooks some of Macon’s most iconic architecture. Andrew hopes that each month’s new venue will expose people to different sides of Macon, and that the interest in each new
location will keep people coming back for more Corner Concerts. “It’s just people taking in a different side of Macon,” Andrew explains, “People enjoying music for music’s sake and taking time to appreciate parts of the city they might not otherwise stop and enjoy.” Building off the momentum from successful downtown events like the Macon Film Festival and Bragg Jam, which have introduced folks from all over the state of Georgia to the city and excited more local pride among natives, Corner Concerts hopes to keep people coming back to take in the sights and sounds of the community. The 7:30-10:30 show time makes for a great event after dinner at a local restaurant, or followed up with drinks at any of the downtown bars. Macon’s great music following and beautiful downtown area have captured the attention of many community organizations and entrepreneurs in recent years, bringing new ideas and events to this historic city. This new Corner Concert series hopes to add another dimension to Macon’s community-driven social calendar, building upon its music history by taking a unique twist to the current music scene. Corner Concerts is featuring local acts in unique venues every month, letting all of Central Georgia know the “Song and Soul of the South” is singing once again.

Slouching Toward Gomorrah
Recent events in the National Football League, as well as previous events in other sports, have prompted me to question what in the hell is happening around us? I mean look at the past couple of weeks with the indictment of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson for spanking his 4 year old child with a branch, leaving not only marks on the child’s buttocks and legs, but also open wounds, and add to that the brutal assault done by Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens to his then girlfriend and the controversy surrounding the actual investigation of the incident by NFL Commissioner Roger Goddell, it certainly has not been a stellar time for the NFL. Going back a little further every game because it in time and looking at the might be the first time steroid usage of Major a fan at the game may League Baseball playhave seen him, and ers Barry Bonds, Ryan keeping his persona Braun, Alex Rodriguez, and reputation intact Roger Clemens, Mark at every turn because McGwire and Jose Cansehe owed it to his fans. Re-educating Our Veterans
Imagine spending a grueling year in Iraq or Afghanistan serving your country in the very center of harm’s way. You return to a grateful family with a resolve to equip yourself with better job skills so you can provide for them and ensure that the sacrifice of your service abroad has a positive outcome. Notes From the Commitee Meeting on Medical Cannabis at Mercer Univeristy BY DANNY DAVIS
On Wednesday, September 10th, a joint committee consisting of four Georgia State Representatives, four State Senators, a Neurologist, and a law enforcement representative met at Mercer University to hear testimony and ask questions on a subject you wouldn’t expect legislators from our state to give any thought to- the legalization of Medical Cannabis. “What’s that you say, Captain? Medical Marijuana?” Not quite, Downtowners, you can put away your Ripstics and Dab Kits. State Representative Allen Peake (R) from the 141st Congressional District is Co-Chair of the Committee on Medical Cannabis, and staunch advocate for the issue. Being a Mercer alumnus he looked right at home in the President’s Dining Hall, seated at the center of a raised table in front of a packed room. Apart from the large media presence, there were characters from all walks of life attending this forum. There were children, police officers, active military officers, Veterans, teachers, doctors, lawyers, etc. It was amazing to see how so many people, from different walks of life, came out in support of what many in the Bible Belt consider a taboo subject. Let’s get down to brass tacks. All of this hoopla surrounds a House Bill aiming to legalize a certain strain of Cannabis to be used for medicinal purposes. However, in no way should you expect to walk into a Doctor’s office and get prescribed a joint for your glaucoma anytime soon. This bill would limit legalization to Cannabis oil, which would be naturally extracted from a plant strain that will be similar to Charlotte’s Web. For those of you unfamiliar with that particular strain, it was specially grown in Colorado for a special little girl who suffered from hundreds of seizures a day. The strain in very low in THC, the chemical which provides most of the “high” most Cannabis users looking for. It is, however, high in CBDs, another chemical that while not inducing as strong of a high, has been purported to have abundant medicinal qualities. The prescription of this drug would be highly regulated, and would only be given to those with chronic developmental disorders and terminal illnesses. Over a dozen people stood before the Committee to give testimony, and a majority of them were there representing children. Most of these children have developmental disabilities, many of them with short life spans. They suffer from a variety of ailments, the most 16 SEPTEMBER 16 - 30, 2014
common of the group being excessive amounts of daily seizures. Throughout the afternoon I heard many heart wrenching stories, was shown disturbing pictures and video, and saw first hand how Medical Cannabis has truly enriched the quality of life for many of these kids. It was also a very nice experience to see how much Rep. Peake cared for these people and their stories. He even has personal relationships with many of the families whose personal struggles he is very involved in. Many of these families have been torn apart by the failure to pass the bill in the previous congressional session. While parents take their children to seek medical treatment in states such as Colorado, siblings and often one of the parents are left behind here in Georgia for various reasons, such as work or school. It’s not just being apart, there’s also a financial struggle when families have to buy a second home in the Rockies and travel back and forth multiple times a month. As one concerned parent put it, “We are a Georgia family, and we want to come home.” Throughout the afternoon it became extremely evident that no one on the Committee could ignore or speak out against the proof set before them. There, in front of them, were children who were going from one hundred seizures a day to eleven day respites from any seizures at all. Not a single Committee member could, or would, dispute the undeniable truth with which they were presented. Yet there are still those against it, and the legislation failed to pass. These parents wanted answers. They wanted to know why. So what was it that was keeping these Georgia state congressmen from helping these ailing kids? As one senator put it, “I think asking whether there’s proof that this works, is a moot point. I’d just like to see some research into why this works, and how it’s working.” Well why should that hold up the legalization of a drug that’s indisputably helping to treat these patients in need? It’s purely political. For some reason, in the 21st Century, Bible Belt politicians are still terrified of their names and reputations being associated with Marijuana. It has a terrible stigma. We’ve had two (confirmed) Presidents who’ve admitted to trying Marijuana at some point in their life. Why are politicians still so afraid of it? That was the question many parents wanted answered, as they try to find ways to treat their suffering children.

I Like the Way We Move Macon moves in many ways, as a city is an ecosystem that requires movement to survive. Cities are often known for the pace at which they move, sparking clichés like “hustle and bustle” to describe the way they frenetically function. I’m happy to say that Macon’s reputation is not that of a clattering chaos, but rather that notion of the leisurely Southern idyll. But still there are ways in which we move to fast, too. Like many American cities, Macon is fairly car dependent. Maconites generally choose to drive places rather than walk, bike, or take public transit. Adding balance to options for getting from point A to point B would be a great boon to Macon economically, as has been seen in many other successful cities, like Portland, Denver, Austin, or Copenhagen, Denmark. I was fortunate to get to see how Copenhagen turned their city around on the notion of being an exemplary bike-friendly community. The Danish capitol, suffering from the death of the shipping industry and disinvestment added a robust system of bike lanes and urban parks to attract people back to the city center. The results were profound, turning Copenhagen into a growing city with strong growth in knowledge economy. Similar results to what we are striving for here in Macon. But, as we know, every city is different and requires its own methods to grow from the center out. Macon is blessed with a downtown that extraordinarily walkable and its grid pattern slows traffic on most streets to a comfortable pace for bicycles. I love biking around downtown, and believe me I am not a hardcore biker. Our big impediment is connecting different neighborhoods with adequate biking and walking paths. In Copenhagen I was struck by how every neighborhood had a safe and welcoming connection to each other than made leisure a vital part of their city’s vibe. And that brings us back to the vibe of Macon. Think about the things that make Macon great and they all drive back to the notion of a city that is made for leisure. We have beautiful parks, great neighborhoods, gorgeous architecture, and a downtown that screams “take a seat a stay a minute”. How we connect the assets without the need for the single-occupant or family vehicle will say a lot about how we grow the community.
We need you to get out and find a new way to move in the city and tell us what connections need to be made as we set about the Macon ACTION Plan process. Be sure to share your ideas with us at Maconactionplan.com and at the open house on October 3rd from 4-9 at the Sports Hall of Fame on Cherry St.

organizations and hear from them,” said Bronson. “The warm welcome that I receive and the pure energy projected from the youth of this city is remarkable. Working with different organizations like the Mentors Project, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Leadership Macon has taught me so much about servant leadership, loyalty, and [a] commitment to empowering our community.” It is easy to see the work that is being put into downtown Macon which includes SPLOST funding for Second Street renewal and winning grants for beautification. The sheer concerted effort that the city is making to find businesses and residents for the center of the city is evident to anyone who cares to have a look. For Bronson, however, the concept is that the other parts of Macon need help, too. “While we improve the heart of the city, I think it’s important that we don’t neglect the others areas of the body in the process. I can say that the current leadership in place today is doing their best to answer the hard questions and come up with effective and efficient means to correct the current and future problems of our city,” said Bronson. “As a community leader, I strive to be a positive example for the younger generation while being a beacon of hope to the older and working to bridge the gap between the two. It’s important that we stress the need for open dialogue, teamwork from all political parties, races, and economics groups, while promoting unity and
Dedicated to Service by Angel Collins The first time many heard the name Paul Bronson was when he ran for Mayor in 2010. He was, inadvertently, part of the group of young, black men running for office who are still having a positive impact on the community. Some looked at the young candidates wondering how they could possibly have the experience to lead, but if any had known Bronson’s accomplishments, they would not have had an issue with the young man’s quest. Bronson grew up in Macon in and around different areas of town. After graduating from Central High School, he joined the military where he earned the rank of Captain. He then attended Georgia Military College and got involved in the community. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Fort Valley State University, he received a Masters in Mental Health Counseling and will start his Ph.D. in Clinical Medical Psychology at Mercer University. His travel and work outside of the community has prompted him to more fully show his care for the community that he calls home. Working with students, mentoring, and championing community growth has been part of his message, officially and unofficially, since his return. “The richest experience that I have with this city is clearly working with the future leaders of America...Our Children! It has been a true blessing to sit in the classroom, visit home, and speak to multiple

I’ve traveled to and visited over 35 states before the age of 25 4. I’ve met the last 4 Presidents of the United States 5. I’ve played golf and climbed the Great Pyramids in Cairo, Egypt 6. I was elected as a Delegate for the State of Georgia for the 2012 DNC 7. In my free time, I work with underprivileged teens in the areas of math and reading 8. I serve as a career counselor and motivational speaker for Bibb County Schools 9. I’m was awarded the Servant Leadership Award by the State of Georgia and Georgia Military College 10. growth with clear communication that encourages new leaders to step up.” If you know Bronson, you know that his dedication would only pull him in the direction of public service. Twice he ran for mayor and once for a new consolidated city council position. Always a strong candidate with lots of support, Bronson took the losses as confirmation that he still had work to do for the community he loves. “During my political campaigns I learned a lot about the city and the issues that we as a people face. Just being involved helped open my eyes to the underlying racial divide in our community when it comes to economic development and growth in Middle Georgia. Although that is always a challenge, I can say without a shadow of doubt that the citizens of Middle Georgia has answered the call and stood up to that challenge of addressing a major concern. Uniquely enough, we have developed a city of leaders who are willing and ready to help, listen, and take action to ensure that everyone has a fighting and equal chance at success,” said Bronson. “As an upcoming elected official and community activist, I am honored to work alongside local and state leaders and look forward to leading this city to the next level of greatness.” Macon comes with its advantages but also with its challenges, and Bronson not only acknowledges the advantages and the challenges but has ideas for helping the city move to a better place. “I would recommend living in Macon to anyone. The healthcare is great as well as the cost of living. There are plenty of restaurants. South Macon (Rutland/South Bibb) offers a nice country setting not far from the city. There are no hour-long commutes to work in heavy traffic, no outrageously priced real estate markets, no driving all the way across the city to reach your favorite stores or restaurants. Overall, it’s a great place to live, work, and play.” Bronson adds, “There is always room for improvement. When it comes to the leadership it’s important that we acknowledge the problems and implement effective and efficient solutions. Working as a team, we should aim to support the public school system by visiting the schools and meet with teachers and administrators in each district. Reaching out to partner with local universities and colleges to promote programs in secondary education and tech skills that ensure we set our children up for success. We as a city can address key issues by being involved and becoming one voice. Areas such as crime can be handled by promoting more after school programs and working in unity with the school board to enhance summer programs and event. We should work to build communities by block scheduling that will assist in the development efforts for key locations like South and East Macon. Performing a block schedule would give us a time frame to work by while holding community leaders and public officials accountable.” All in all, the life lessons Bronson has learned through military service, community service, and civic service has only expanded his passion for the work still to come. “With every God given breathe, I will advocate, fight for, and live by the values of selfless service, respect, duty and loyalty in hopes that others would carry them on as well. While I aim to educate myself, I strive to educate others. Sharing knowledge that helps build those who follow you is the true core values of being a leader.”

As president of the Cherry Blossom Festival, I would like to share with you our mission statement: To thrive and become a 50-year-old festival whose performance is superior in everything it does. In accordance with our mission, I believe the festival is making a bold and strategic move by expanding its footprint beyond the springtime core event held in March with the introduction of the first ever fall schedule of events. I spoke with Cyndey Busbee, past Cherry Blossom Board chair, and she expects that “creating new regional community events throughout the year will not only create new revenue opportunities to help preserve the traditional, award-winning spring festival, but will introduce new audiences to its legacy.” Building on this great tradition and legacy will require new and exciting initiatives. One key objective resulting from this year’s planning process was to expand the festival’s footprint beyond the 10-day event in the spring. However, expanding the footprint involves many varied and exciting fundraising events scheduled throughout the year. Four upcoming events are highlighted in the Pink Page in the Sunday, September 7th issue of the Macon Telegraph: • Sept. 20 — PraiseFest at Washington Park • Oct. 23 — Spirits in the Courtyard, Auction and Reverse Raffle event at the Blacksmith Shop • November — Roll out of the new Festival Endowment Fund • Nov. 2 — Battle of the Regional High School Bands at Henderson Stadium The spring event will always remain the heart-warming core of the festival. Kathryn Dennis, of the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, believes these initiatives, and especially the Cherry Blossom Festival Endowment Fund, will strengthen the festival’s “framework for the future.” I am proud that our terrific staff, including our marketing firm, M&R Marketing Group, has embraced this new way of thinking and is chomping at the bit to make it happen. They have also received enthusiastic support from our board members. Gen. Bob McMahon, 2015 board chair, believes that “including events like these throughout the year is both logical and appropriate as we work to accentuate the positives of our festival and our region.” The most successful festivals in the country have one common thread — the enthusiasm of its citizens for their festival, and the willingness to volunteer and work hard to make their festival the best it can be. Working together with all the citizens of Middle Georgia, we will make your festival the best it can be. Another vital aspect of the festival’s success stems from the incredible support of our sponsors, contributors and volunteers, and for that we are deeply grateful.
The festival has provided many wonderful memories. Betty Ragland, festival queen of 2009, feels that “the festival is fun, exciting, beautiful and makes people happy.” But it’s even more than that. A recently completed economic impact study quantified an impact to the region of anywhere from $5 million to $7 million. Our goal is to aggressively grow this figure in the years ahead. In a conversation with Mayor Robert Reichert, he shared “the impact of the festival on our community is not just economic, it has a very favorable impact on our quality of life.” He emphasized that “it’s fun to be in Macon during the Cherry Blossom Festival for both visitors and residents alike.” Linda Maddox, executive director of Central City Park, believes “the Festival offers fun, excitement and firstclass entertainment to diverse participants from everywhere while boosting the local economy.” As a community, we must nurture the festival on many different fronts. Just telling the story of our terrific legacy will contribute to its positive growth and sustainability. It’s amazing how far the Cherry Blossom Festival has come since William Fickling Sr., discovered the first tree in 1949. Through Fickling’s warm generosity, thousands of trees have been planted throughout the city and region. Bill Fickling III, told me, “when my grandfather first found the beautiful trees blooming in his yard, he could not have imagined the fantastic festival and wonderful community spirit that took root in Macon from the first few seeds he initially planted.” Recent estimates put the figure at more than 350,000 trees blooming every spring. Carolyn Crayton, founder of the festival, had a vision and through her hard work and dedication made this award-winning festival possible for everyone to enjoy. Carolyn proudly claims, “We have more cherry trees than our nation’s capital and are recognized as the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World. “The Cherry Blossom Festival has become known throughout the entire world for the extraordinary beauty of the Yoshino Cherry Trees.” Bill Fickling, III, explains that “the blossoms epitomize the true meaning of the festival and now thousands of trees, volunteers and smiles later, we reap the wonderful fruits of love, beauty, and international friendship that grew from humble beginnings.” I love how Gen. McMahon passionately explains, “the Cherry Blossom Festival is more than just a 10-day event. It’s a part of the fabric of Middle Georgia. It’s the celebration of the renewal of spring and more importantly, it is a celebration of the rebirth of our entire region.” Will you join me and countless others in championing the festival as a vital component in the life and growth of our beloved city and region? I certainly hope you will.

THE REVIEW AUGUST 23
Lineup: The Dirty Guv’nahs/ Sonia Leigh/ Gringo Grande Cost: $15 in advance/$18 day of show Prior knowledge of bands: The Dirty Guv’nahs are the only act on this bill that I hadn’t seen. I know that they’ve played a few times in Macon and the folks I know that have seen them seem to dig it. Sonia Leigh and Gringo Grande I have seen a couple of times before but it has been a year or two. So I thought I knew what to expect, but was curious about what I had missed from them in the interim. Disclaimer: Yes, I spent the afternoon before the show enjoying Macon’s Beerfest. But before heading back home for a rest around 7:30 I checked in at Crazy Bull to see when things might start. The general consensus of the volunteers was that it would kick off around 9:00. I’m not going to lie, when I heard that I thought to myself, “Well shows in this town rarely start as early they’re supposed to so let’s just say I’ll head back down around 10:00”. I was completely wrong. When I got back to Crazy Bull (at 10:18) I had already missed Gringo Grande and was walking in to the last chord of Sonia Leigh’s last song. Attendees/venue/vibe:I’ve been to Crazy Bull on only two or three other occasions and it has always struck me as a place that’s too big for Macon to fill. Weaver’s Weekend showed me that that was far from the truth (now if we can just figure how to get them to see more shows). The multiple bars and bartenders kept the beverages flowing and this huge crowd was beginning to hit its stride. With an unexpected
break in the music, as the bands swapped out gear on stage, I decided to see if there was anyone around that I knew. There was not. I never felt unwelcome, but it was definitely a crowd that knew each other and without a band playing it was hard for me to blend in. Thoughts: By the time The Dirty Guv’nahs hit the stage (just before 11:00) the crowd was ready and had been clearly waiting for these guys. I was quickly caught up in the audience’s excitement and anticipation, wondering if I had been missing out on something. The first thing I noticed was the deep southern riffs the guitarists where throwing around. While these guys didn’t have the most inventive licks, the way they played off the smooth flowing organ and the rock-steady rhythm section made most of their songs feel as if I already knew them. With the crowd singing, clapping, and dancing along to most of the songs, even those that were a bit predictable I knew where striking a chord. The dirty Guv’nahs commanded the respect that a clearly professional and dedicated band should and I’m glad I finally got to see them. Closing remarks: The Friends of Mike Weaver Foundation and Weaver’s Weekend honor the memory of their friend by raising money to support local youth sports in Macon. I’m guessing this year was a smash and there will be some very happy kids out there. Congratulations! Although I missed the beginning of this show, I’m glad to see venues like Crazy Bull and The Capitol are sticking to the event starting times. When shows start earlier you gain access to a whole group of folks that want to see live music, but can’t or won’t stay out till 2:00. Maybe if this becomes the norm, I’ll see more of you out there in the audience as we…Get dirty. Dig the field.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE FRIENDS OF THE HUMMINGBIRD & CITIZENS OF MACON
While trending data in broader markets show that non-smoking policies are probably a good idea in health and business, local trends suggest the time is not right for their implementation at The Bird.
Next year we will celebrate our tenth anniversary doing business in Macon. Alongside all of you over the last decade we have seen trends come and go. The good changes have stuck while the negative have faded into memory. One constant however, has been the undeniable fact that Macon, Georgia IS The Bird, and we’d like to say thank you for that. As has always been our motto, “It’s your bar. All we do is run it.” As entrepreneurs and civic minded citizens, we have implemented some changes of late, the most significant being our non-smoking policy. Trends in broader markets suggest this was a good idea for us and for our customers. Reality in our own fair city screams otherwise. Our noble experiment has yielded solid results which prompt us to invite you all as our customers and friends to make your own choice to light up or not, inside or out. While trending data in broader markets show that non-smoking policies are probably a good idea in health and business, local trends suggest the time is not right for their implementation at The Bird. In other words, friends, we goofed. As a token of our appreciation to you, our loyal customers during our first ten years, we’d like to say thanks and welcome back. - THE HUMMINGBIRD
FRIDAY, SEPT. 19 E.G. Kight at The Cox Capitol Theatre Part of the Outlaw 100.9
BBQ, Blues, and Brews Series Award-winning Georgia blues singer E.G. Kight’s album release party for A New Day, coming out on September 16. Tickets include a barbecue buffet. Considered a true vocalist, Kight has had six Blues Music Awards nominations and two Blues Blast nominations, with three for Song of the Year. Her last four albums went to #1 on Sirius XM’s Bluesville. One also charted in the top 10 on Airplay Direct’s Top 50 Blues Albums, and one went to #1 on the Roots Blues Chart. Kight has appeared on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion. Tickets are available at CoxCapitolTheatre.com or by calling 877.987.6487. Prices are $15 in advance, and $20 day of show. Rachel Timberlake @ Crazy Bull It takes courage to even consider a career as a professional entertainer, but Southern Indiana’s Rachel Timberlake has an extra supply of guts and guile. That’s because she isn’t one of those performers who’ve been on stage their entire life and knew singing would be their career choice before they had a prom date. Instead, she’s made the decision after attaining success as a teacher, and after being encouraged by othersLIVE to stepDJ out and display what’s unquestionably DANCE a prominent, impressive and striking voice and PARTY! delivery. Homeless Hill @ The Bird Born in the blazing heat of a Deep South summer in 2009, the award winning band Homeless Hill quickly developed a local following that
outstripped their expectations. While performing to live audiences with hook-driven originals and innovative covers that off-set their tight rock riffs, the guys, front man and songwriter Darin Curtis, drummer Danny Savage, and bassist Adam Crump collaborated to create “Set It On Fire”, their first full-length album, which has now reached the ears of thousands and innumerable people through airplay, iTunes, and live shows at venues and festivals throughout the Southeastern U.S.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 20 Crazy Bull Jam with Chris Stapleton Come Celebrate the Crazy Bull’s First anniversary! The raw power of Chris Stapleton’s voice grabs you the moment he starts to sing. The award winning singer/songwriter has been described by some of today’s most credible artists, including Adele, Sheryl Crow, Luke Bryan and Vince Gill, as the best voice in Nashville, and that whiskey-soaked sound with its punch-you-in-the-gut soul, is the standout focus of his first studio album for Mercury Records. Radio Cult @ Wild Wing Cafe Since 2005, Radio Cult has performed over 800 shows including conventions, casinos, weddings, fraternity parties, corporate events and festivals as well as in bars, concert halls and other music venues from their hometown of Atlanta, GA all the way to Los Angeles, CA and London, UK. The members of Radio Cult LOVE to play in a band and it shows. When the band has fun, the crowd has fun and with Radio Cult the crowd really has a blast! S
THURSDAY, SEPT. 25 Cranford Hollow @ The Bird A boot stomp on a dusty bar floor. A clang of a whiskey bottle at last call. A holler from a crowd in need of an encore. It’s grit. It’s sounds of the South. It’s Cranford Hollow. A blended mix of Southern Rock, Appalacian Fiddle MACON BEER FESTIVAL Music and American Rock and Roll It’s music from now and years past, harkening to our country’s rugged and untamed infancy. It’s music woven into our history. Our music remastered for the 21st century. JJ Grey & Mofro @ Cox Capitol Theatre Over the course of six albums and a decade of touring, JJ Grey’s grimy blend of front porch soul and down-home storytelling has taken him around the world and back again. Beating the streets on nearly every continent, he and his band Mofro have sewn a continuous thread of laying-it-on-the-line shows that move folks to dance and at times to tears.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 28 The Temptations @ the Grand Opera House An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temptations began their musical life in Detroit in the early ’60s. In 1964 the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced song The Way You Do the Things You Do turned five guys into stars. An avalanche of hits followed, including My Girl, It’s Growing, Since I Lost My Baby, Get Ready, Ain’t Too Proud to Beg, Beauty Is Only Skin Deep, I Wish It Would Rain and many others. $45+
